The ontogenetic change in turbiditaxis (i.e. attraction to turbid waters) was examined in the larvae and juveniles of Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus by testing three levels of turbidity (0, 20 and 100 ppm of kaolin). Larvae of 12, 20 and 30 mm standard length (LS) exhibited turbiditaxis to both 20 and 100 ppm of kaolin, whereas 6 mm LS larvae and 45 mm LS juveniles did not exhibit any turbiditaxis. Turbiditaxis might explain the ontogenetic habitat shift from coastal to offshore waters reported for this species.  相似文献

Only the first branching of the perradial and interradial channels of the gastrovascular system of Aurelia aurita (L.) (Scyphozoa: Ulmaridae) in the metaephyra stage is always uniform. Further branch formation is variable and random. New branches originate most often at the annular channel, but some of them grow from the radial channels. The early formation of irregular and chaotic patterns of the radial channel branching is caused by the asynchrony and topographic variability of the generation of new branches of different channels. During further morphogenesis, the spatial and temporal variability of branching increases, which leads to an increased state of chaos in the morphology of the branching channels of each individual. Lack of rigid determinancy of the gastrovascular system channel branching and plasticity of this system in the course of the entire ontogenesis provide possible evidence of its adaptive responses, for example, to the disruption of tetraradial symmetry or rearrangements after damage.  相似文献

1. The SDS-disc electrophoretical analysis of wheat flour globulin revealed that upon incubation with “Kansui,” a mixture of alkali carbonates, one (No. 9) of the components disappeared and another component (No. 11) increased significantly whose molecular weight was estimated to be more than one million. Incubation of flour globulin with “Kansui” resulted in decrease of SH groups of the globulin.

2. However, a mild reduction of the globulin incubated with “Kansui” caused reappearance of component No. 9 and a decrease of component No. 11.

3. Previous treatment of flour globulin with PCMB or AN completely inhibited such effects of “Kansui” as described above.

4. A fraction containing component No. 9 of flour globulin which was the main component responsible to polymerization by “Kansui,” was isolated from “Kansui”-treated globulin by chromatography on columns of Sephadex G200 and Sepharose 4B.

5. The component protein thus isolated showed a typical phenomenon of reversibility in depolymerization to the original component corresponding to No. 9 component by chemical reduction and polymerization to a component corresponding to No. 9 at alkaline sides.

The life cycle of the moon jellyfish, Aurelia aurita, alternates between a benthic asexual polyp stage and a planktonic sexual medusa (jellyfish) stage. Transition from polyp to medusa is called strobilation. To investigate the molecular mechanisms of strobilation, we screened for genes that are upregulated during strobilation using the differential display method and we identified aspartylglucosaminidase (AGA), which encodes a lysosomal hydrolase. Similar to AGAs from other species, Aurelia AGA possessed an N-terminal signal peptide and potential N-glycosylation sites. The genomic region of Aurelia AGA was approximately 9.8 kb in length and contained 12 exons and 11 introns. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis revealed that AGA expression increased during strobilation, and was then decreased in medusae. To inhibit AGA function, we administered the lysosomal acidification inhibitors, chloroquine or bafilomycin A1, to animals during strobilation. Both inhibitors disturbed medusa morphogenesis at the oral end, suggesting involvement of lysosomal hydrolases in strobilation.  相似文献

Summary

Some allometric relationships of the Common Jellyfish, Aurelia aurita, a common species along the Turkish Eastern Black Sea coast, were studied in the harbour of Trabzon. Log bell diameter was linearly related to log wet weight: wet weight = 0.61 . diameter1.88. Some physico-chemical parameters of the sea water in the harbour are also given.  相似文献

The extracellular matrix of the jellyfish Aurelia aurita (Scyphozoa, Cnidaria), known as the mesoglea, is populated by numerous mesogleal cells (Mc). We determined the pattern of the Mc and the mesoglea, raised polyclonal antibodies (RA47) against the major mesogleal protein pA47 (47 kDa) and checked their specificity. In the mesoglea, RA47 stains pA47 itself. In immunoblots of Mc, RA47 stains bands of 120 kDa and 80 kDa; weaker staining is observed at pA47. The same staining pattern is seen on blots of jellyfish epidermal cells and of whole Hydra (Hydrozoa) or isolated mesoglea of Hydra. Our data indicate that pA47 is synthesized by Mc and epidermal cells as high molecular precursors. Using immunostaining techniques, we showed Mc to be involved in the formation of mesogleal non-collagenous (called \"elastic\" in classic morphological studies) fibres. The biochemical and morphological data suggest that Mc originate from the epidermis.  相似文献

Microhabitat use and feeding behavior of the rainbowfish Melanotaenia duboulayi (Castelnau) were investigated in a slow-flowing stream adjacent to riparian forest in south-eastern Queensland, Australia. Fish were more abundant in vegetated areas, but did not enter dense Vallisneria beds, where predators were observed. In sunny conditions shoals of juveniles occurred near the water surface feeding floating material on the surface, but larger fish tended to occur at the bottom near submerged vegetation, often utilizing the overhanging aquatic plant community as a refuge and food source. In the middle of the day, juveniles and small fish seemed to show behavioral thermoregulation at the surface in the warmest site. Under cloudy conditions, however, fish of all sizes preferred deeper water. The present study suggests that in still and sunny pools thermal change caused by sunlight influences the microhabitat choice of small fish. A field experiment using a kingfisher model implies that fish swimming at the surface could escape from aerial predators in sunlit conditions by responding to moving shadows, but could not do so under cloudy conditions. Minnows Phoxinus phoxinus did not show any difference in the average distance from a predator associated with the left or right position of a shoal-mate. While inspection behaviour of fish tested with a mirror on their left side was indistinguishable from the behaviour of controls tested without a mirror, inspection behaviour of fish tested with the mirror on their right side appeared to be changed and incoherent in both temporal and spatial parameters. These results suggest that, as in mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki , the condition with the mirror on the left provided the best arrangement of monocular lateral stimulation in which each stimulus fell into the correct lateral visual field. Minnows showed a significant left eye preference during scrutiny of their mirror image when tested in the absence of any predator and a significant right eye preference while monitoring a live predator in the absence of a social partner.  相似文献

We measured the respiration rate of Aurelia aurita payingspecial attention to the relationship between its metabolic ratesand body mass throughout ontogeny of the jellyfish in a sexualgeneration. Two different regression lines between respirationrates and body dry weight were obtained in ephyra to young medusa(bell diameter 4.2–19 mm, 0.07–14 mg dry weight) and medusa(BD17-120 mm, 12-2100 mg DW), at respective temperatures of 10 and15 °C. The cut off point of the metabolic rates was foundat the developmental stage just being metamorphosed into medusashape (BD 12–20 mm). The slope value of medusa respiration ratewas close to isometric scaling (0.9), whereas that of ephyra toyoung medusa was lower (0.6). Ecological implications of allometricscaling in the early developmental stages of ephyrae and metephyraeare discussed.  相似文献

Early social conditions are vital for the establishment of future social interactions. Less, however, is known about how differences in early social conditions contribute to the process of individual recognition and subsequently in the decision of associating and exploring behaviours. In this study, we address this gap in the Trinidadian guppy Poecilia reticulata and test the prediction that fish would show a higher tendency to recognize and associate with individuals of similar phenotype. This prediction was tested by comparing the likelihood of association and latency to explore a novel area in males and females when in the presence of individuals that were familiar (reared together but from different populations), from the same population of origin (from the same population but deprived of interaction with each other), or were unfamiliar (different population and have never interacted). Both early social conditions and population of origin (phenotype matching) affected the tendency to shoal and explore. Females, but not males, exhibited identical preference to associate either with unfamiliar females as with familiar females from a different population. Importantly, female preference did not occur with unfamiliar individuals from a different population. In contrast with our prediction, tendency to shoal did not predict exploration propensity. Males always start exploration before the group whenever unfamiliar males composed the group. Females on the other hand only moved to the novel area after seeing the group doing so, revealing sexual dimorphism in exploratory behaviour. Our results provide evidence for a familiarity and phenotypic matching recognition mechanism at the population level and also highlight the importance of accounting for differences between sexes when investigating the effects of early social conditions.  相似文献

Hydractinia echinata and Aurelia aurita produce motile larvae which undergo metamorphosis to sessile polyps when induced by external cues. The polyps are found at restricted sites, A. aurita predominantly on rocks close to the shore, H. echinata on shells inhabited by hermit crabs. It has been argued that the differential distribution of the polyps in their natural environment largely reflects the distribution of the natural metamorphosis-inducing cues. In the case of H. echinata, bacteria of the genus Alteromonas were argued to meet these conditions. We found that almost all substrates collected in the littoral to induce metamorphosis in H. echinata, and several bacterial strains isolated from the sea, including the common E. coli, induce metamorphosis efficiently. In A. aurita metamorphosis may be induced by the water–air interface, whereby metamorphosis precedes (final) settlement. Received: 7 December 1998 / Accepted: 8 July 1999  相似文献

Prey may respond evolutionarily to predator pressure either by removing themselves from the foraging microhabitat of the predators (predator avoidance mechanisms) or by reducing the probability of successful predation when they are within the perceptual field of the predators (antipredator mechanisms). These two categories of survival mechanisms are under different selective regimes and the evolution of one type of prey survival mechanism reduces selection on the other.  相似文献

Abstract Predation is recognized as a major selective pressure influencing population dynamics and evolutionary processes. Prey species have developed a variety of predator avoidance strategies, not least of which is olfactory recognition. However, within Australia, European settlement has brought with it a number of introduced predators, perhaps most notably the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and domestic cat (Felis catus), which native prey species may be unable to recognize and thus avoid due to a lack of coexistence history. This study examined the response of native Tasmanian swamp rats (Rattus lutreolus velutinus) to predators of different coexistence history (native predator‐ spotted‐tail quoll (Dasyurus maculatus), domestic cats and the recently introduced red fox). We used an aggregate behavioural response of R. l. velutinus to predator integumental odour in order to assess an overall behavioural response to predation risk. Rattus lutreolus velutinus recognized the integumental odour of the native quoll (compared with control odours) but did not respond to either cat or fox scent (compared with control odur). In contrast, analyses of singular behaviours resulted in the conclusion that rats did not respond differentially to either native or introduced predators, as other studies have concluded. Therefore, measuring risk assessment behaviours at the level of overall aggregate response may be more beneficial in understanding and analysing complex behavioural patterns such as predator detection and recognition. These results suggest that fox and cat introductions (and their interactive effects) may have detrimental impacts upon small native Tasmanian mammals due to lack of recognition and thus appropriate responses.  相似文献

In two-predator, one-prey systems with intraguild predationand patchily distributed prey, the intraguild prey may facea choice between prey patches with and without intraguild predators. To minimize falling victim to intraguild predation, intraguildprey are expected to perceive cues specifically associated withthe presence of intraguild predators. We investigate whetherintraguild prey avoided intraguild predators and which cuestriggered this behavior in a system composed of plant-inhabitingarthropods. We found that intraguild prey recognized intraguildpredators from a distance, based on their diet: they avoidedodors of intraguild predators that had consumed shared preybut did not avoid odors of intraguild predators that had fedon other diets, including a diet of conspecifics. When intraguildprey were foraging on a patch, detection of intraguild predatorsled to longer periods of immobility and to fewer captures ofthe shared prey. However, intraguild predators that were eitherstarved or had previously consumed intraguild prey posed a higherrisk to intraguild prey than did intraguild predators that hadconsumed the shared prey. We conclude that the cues used byintraguild prey to avoid intraguild predators are associatedwith the circumstances under which they encounter intraguildpredators in the field and not to different degrees of danger.  相似文献

The long‐term impacts of wildfires on animal populations are largely unknown. We used time‐series data based on a tracking index, from coastal NSW spanning 28 years after a wildfire, to investigate the relative influence of habitat structure, species interactions and climate on post‐fire animal population dynamics. The fire had an immediate impact on habitat structure, reducing and simplifying vegetation cover, which then underwent post‐fire successional change including an increase and plateau in tree canopy cover; an increase, stabilization and then decline in shrub cover; and an increase in ground litter cover. Population changes of different animal species were influenced by different components of successional change, but there was also evidence that species interactions were important. For example, bandicoots (Isoodon obesulus and Perameles nasuta combined) increased concurrent with an increase in shrub cover then declined at a faster rate than a direct association with senescing shrub cover would suggest, while the feral cat (Felis catus) population changed with the bandicoot population, suggesting a link between these species. Potoroos (Potorous tridactylus) increased 10 years after the fire concurrent with the closing tree canopy, but there was also evidence of a negative association with feral foxes (Vulpes vulpes). Variation in rainfall did not have significant effects on the population dynamics of any species. Our results suggest that changes in habitat structure play a key role in the post‐fire dynamics of many ground‐dwelling animals and hence different fire regimes are likely to influence animal dynamics through their effects on habitat structure. However, the role of predator–prey interactions, particularly with feral predators, is less clear and further study will require manipulative experiments of predators in conjunction with fire treatments to determine whether feral predator control should be integrated with fire management to improve outcomes for some native species.  相似文献
