Reproductive efficiency is a key component in successful dairy farm management. A study was initiated to evaluate the incidence and consequences of inseminating dairy cows in the middle of the estrous cycle or while pregnant. In a research herd of 242 Holsteins, managed for reproduction under typical farm conditions, milk progesterone (P4) was assayed 3 times per wk for at least 120 d postpartum. The P4 cycle was compared with the estrus detection and breeding records and pregnancy diagnosis 6 wk after insemination. About 19% of the inseminations were performed when P4 was high in the estrous cycle and in pregnant cows. Insemination of pregnant cows led to an estimated 17% induced embryonic death or abortion. In Israel, inseminators are extensively trained to detect cows not in estrus. They reject about 16% of the cows submitted for reinsemination, with a 95% accuracy of rejection of 44% of the cows that were pregnant. The pattern of submission of cows for reinsemination in areas around New York State was similar to Israel and to the experimental herd. These results indicate that more careful submission and rejection can reduce the unnecessary use of semen, reduce abortions and minimize long calving intervals, all contributing to the success of a dairy herd operation.  相似文献

Efficient detection of estrus is a permanent challenge for successful reproductive performance in dairy cattle. In this context, comprehensive knowledge of estrus-related behaviors is fundamental to achieve optimal estrus detection rates. This review was designed to identify the characteristics of behavioral estrus as a necessary basis for developing strategies and technologies to improve the reproductive management on dairy farms. The focus is on secondary symptoms of estrus (mounting, activity, aggressive and agonistic behaviors) which seem more indicative than standing behavior. The consequences of management, housing conditions and cow- and environmental-related factors impacting expression and detection of estrus as well as their relative importance are described in order to increase efficiency and accuracy of estrus detection. As traditional estrus detection via visual observation is time-consuming and ineffective, there has been a considerable advancement of detection aids during the last 10 years. By now, a number of fully automated technologies including pressure sensing systems, activity meters, video cameras, recordings of vocalization as well as measurements of body temperature and milk progesterone concentration are available. These systems differ in many aspects regarding sustainability and efficiency as keys to their adoption for farm use. As being most practical for estrus detection a high priority – according to the current research – is given to the detection based on sensor-supported activity monitoring, especially accelerometer systems. Due to differences in individual intensity and duration of estrus multivariate analysis can support herd managers in determining the onset of estrus. Actually, there is increasing interest in investigating the potential of combining data of activity monitoring and information of several other methods, which may lead to the best results concerning sensitivity and specificity of detection. Future improvements will likely require more multivariate detection by data and systems already existing on farms.  相似文献

Data were collected on reproductive, health and production events in 45 dairy herds in southwestern and eastern Ontario, Canada, from July 1990 to July 1993. Mean and median days in milk at first estrus, at first service, and at conception were 85.1 and 83.9, 94.0 and 88.9, and 126.3 and 115.5 d, respectively. The mean estrus detection rate was 48.3%, with a minimum of 28.4% and a maximum of 64.2%. The mean overall conception rate was 46.7%, with a minimum of 29.8% and a maximum of 70.7%. The most commonly used used therapeutic agents were GnRH (11.5% lactational incidence risk) and PG (13.1% lactational incidence risk). Estrus management accounted for the largest portion of PG use in the herds studied (69.4%). Results of a two sample t-test indicated no significant difference in reproductive performance among herds housed in free-stall compared with those housed in tie-stall barns. Multivariate linear regression models of 3 reproductive performance measures indicated that cows with ovarian cysts and/or increased peak milk production had significantly longer calving-to-first estrus and calving-to-conception intervals as well as lower conception rates than average producing cows without cysts. Cows with metritis were found to have significantly shorter calving-to-conception intervals but no detectable difference in conception rate or calving-to-first estrus interval than their herdmates. As lactation number increased reproductive performance improved. Cows that were observed in estrus earlier conceived earlier. Animals receiving uterine infusions had significantly longer calving-to-conception intervals and lower conception rates than their herdmates. There was no detectable difference in reproductive performance for cows treated with GnRH or PG compared with the nontreated cows. An increased estrus detection rate was associated with shorter calving-to-conception intervals and lower conception rates. Based on the range of performance in the study herds, the factors with the greatest potential influence on calving-to-conception interval in the average herd were the estrus detection rate and conception rate.  相似文献

A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the outcome of 223 prostaglandin F(2)alpha (PGF) treatments given to lactating Holstein and Jersey cows over a 44-mo period. The cows were part of a commercial dairy herd. Treated cows were given PGF (25 mg i.m.) because they had not been observed in estrus or because they had been diagnosed as having a luteal cyst or pyometra. Outcome of treatments was assessed for frequency of response to treatment (the detection of estrus), time interval to detection and pregnancy outcome of breedings at PGF induced estrus. Of the 223 administrations of PGF, 70% (156 223 ) were given for unobserved estrus, 12.1% (27 223 ) were given for cystic ovarian disease and 15.2% (34 223 ) were given for pyometra. Estrus was detected in 55.3% (120 217 ) of cows over a period of 36 to 130 hours after PGF administration. Interval to estrus and response rates were not influenced by the reason for treatment. Mean time interval to response was 79.1 h. Time interval for response was affected by season (P < 0.01) housing location (P < 0.01) and lactation number (P < 0.05). Insemination was performed following 157 of the treatments. For cows treated for unobserved estrus, insemination was performed in response to estrus or at 80 h if no estrus had been previously seen. Of this group, 39.7% (58 146 ) failed to show estrus and were inseminated at 80 h. Reinsemination was required for 22.7% (20 88 ) of the cows that manifested estrus following insemination at 80 h. Overall conception rate was 41.4% (65 157 ). Cows inseminated in response to estrus had a 53.4% (47 88 ) conception rate, and appointment bred (80 h) cows had a 20.7% (12 58 ) conception rate. Factors significantly influencing conception were response to PGF administration (P < 0.05), season (P < 0.01) and lactation number (P < 0.01). It was concluded that estrus detection efficiency affects the outcome of PGF administration and that conception rates resulting from 80 h breeding when no estrus is observed may be unacceptably low.  相似文献

For several years progesterone in milk or blood has been recognized as an indicator of different cow states related to reproduction. For this study, an existing simulation model was modified in order to analyze the technical and economic effects of including information on progesterone status in an automatic inline monitoring system. Implementation of an inline progesterone indicator was assumed to directly affect the estrus detection rate, the period until treatment for post-partum anestrus and the number of mistimed AIs. Different implementations of an inline progesterone indicator were simulated in a typical Danish dairy herd with 120 cows and in other herd situations represented by: a herd with poor reproduction efficiency, a herd with a high estrus detection rate and a herd using a 9 week postponed AI period for primiparous cows. It was concluded that implementation of an inline progesterone indicator in a dairy herd previously using visual estrus detection has a break-even price of 3-81 euros per cow-year depending on differences in implementation type and herd reproduction management. The highest break-even price was found using the assumptions that simulated a herd with initially poor reproductive efficiency. With the assumptions that simulated a typical Danish herd the break-even price was 46 euros per cow-year. Attributable effects of using the indicator, including effects of labor time, are discussed.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to explore the importance of including genetic progress in milk yield when evaluating different reproductive strategies in a dairy herd by simulation modeling. The model used in this study was SimHerd V, a dynamic and mechanistic Monte Carlo simulation model of a dairy herd including young stock. A daily increasing trend describing genetic milk yield potential of the sire population was included in the model. The inaccuracy of assuming that replacement heifers have the same (milk yield) potential as the cows present in the herd was hereby dealt with. Improving estrus detection rate from 0.45 to 0.80 increased gross margin (GM) per cow-year by €20 when genetic progress was not included in the model. When genetic progress was included in the model, then the same improvement in estrus detection decreased the GM per cow-year by €7.4. This reduced effect was explained by a lower replacement rate in consequence of the improved estrus detection and thereby a slower genetic progress in the herd. There was a reduced effect of including genetic progress on GM when surplus heifers were sold selectively based on breeding values. Repeated insemination with sexed semen on the superior half of all heifers reduced GM by €8 per cow-year when genetic progress was not included and increased the GM by €16 per cow-year when genetic progress was included in the model. Including genetic progress reduced the losses caused by lower conception and estrus detection rates and had a minimal effect with regard to postponing first insemination. This study has proven that it is important to include genetic progress in decisions on reproduction strategies in a dairy herd.  相似文献

Using two PGF treatments 14 days apart as a way to enhance estrus detection rate following the 2nd treatment is a reproductive management tool that continues to be used on large dairy farms. In one study, in cows with a functional CL and a dominant follicle, treatment with cloprostenol vs. dinoprost resulted in greater peripheral estradiol concentrations. The objective of the present study was to determine if cloprostenol could enhance pregnancy rates of cows in a large dairy herd using a PGF program for 1st artificial insemination (AI). Lactating dairy cows (n = 4549) were randomly assigned to receive two treatments of either 500 μg cloprostenol or 25 mg dinoprost 14 days apart, with the 2nd treatment on the 1st day of the voluntary waiting period (57 DIM). Cows detected in estrus within 5 days after the 2nd treatment were inseminated. There was no effect of treatment on day of estrus detection, with 78% of cows inseminated on Days 3 or 4 following treatment. Cloprostenol increased (P < 0.01) estrus detection rates in 1st parity cows compared to dinoprost, 42.4 vs. 34.0%. In cows inseminated on Days 3 or 4 after treatment, cloprostenol increased (P = 0.05) conception rates compared to dinoprost, 38.3 vs. 34.4%. When treatments and parities were combined, conception rates increased (P < 0.02) with interval after treatment (27.0, 36.4, and 44.5% for Days 1 or 2, Days 3 or 4, and Day 5, respectively). Cloprostenol increased (P = 0.02) overall pregnancy rate compared to dinoprost, 14.4 vs. 12.2%. In summary, cloprostenol increased fertility in 1st parity cows inseminated on Days 3 or 4 following treatment and subsequently enhanced pregnancy rates of 1st parity lactating dairy cows compared to dinoprost. Fertility appeared greater in cows expected to have had a young antral ovarian follicle at treatment.  相似文献

Reproductive performance in Ohio dairy herds in the 1990s   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objective of this study was to evaluate trends in reproductive performance in Ohio dairy herds during the 1990s. Stringent criteria for herd inclusion were applied to DHI records to ensure high quality and reliability of the data. The final data set contained 44,425 monthly herd summary records from 1772 herds from years 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998. Outcomes of interest were calving interval length, calving-to-conception interval, days to first breeding, services per conception and first service conception rate. PROC MIXED in SAS (version 8.1) was used and the monthly records were treated as repeated measures nested within years and herds. First-order autoregressive covariance structure was used to model the covariance between the repeated measures within herds. The data were analyzed for the entire herd as well as for the first lactation cows separately. During the 1990s reproductive performance declined in Ohio dairy herds. Herd average calving interval lengthened from 13.6 to 14.1 months and calving-to-conception interval increased from 136 to 150 days between 1992 and 1998, respectively. Days to first service and number of services increased while first service conception rate declined on a herd level. The reproductive performance of first lactation cows, however, remained constant during this same period. Overall herd reproductive performance was associated with herd size and fat-corrected rolling herd average milk production (FCM). As milk yield increased, first service conception rate decreased and services per conception increased. Larger herds had lower first service conception rate and needed more services per conception, but they started breeding their cows earlier resulting in a slightly shorter calving interval and calving-to-conception interval compared to smaller herds.  相似文献

When is a cow in estrus? Clinical and practical aspects   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Good detection of estrus is critically important in dairy husbandry. Incorrect detection of estrus is related to loss of profit due to extended calving intervals, milk loss, veterinary costs, etc. Detection of estrus remains a major problem despites enormous progress in the knowledge of reproductive physiology of the cow and in development of estrus detection aids. To achieve good estrus detection, many factors have to be taken into account. On one hand a cow has to express estrus and on the other hand the farmer has to detect it. Combined action of several hormones causes physiological changes that lead to ovulation and an environment in the uterus that allows sperm to fertilize the egg. Besides these internal actions, a number of external changes can be observed. When using visual observations, time of the day and time spend on observation have a great impact on detection rates. Many devices are available to aid in estrus detection, such as pedometers, mount devices, temperature, and hormone measurements.Expression of estrus can be influenced by many factors. Heritability, number of days postpartum, lactation number, milk production, and health are known to influence estrus expression. Environmental factors like nutrition, season, housing, herd size, etc. also play a role in estrus expression. To evaluate estrus detection, record keeping is very important; a number of formulas can be used to assess detection efficiency. Besides the farmer, the veterinarian and inseminator can play an important role in estrus confirmation and good insemination strategy. In the end, the time of ovulation and the age of the egg at sperm penetration is critical for conception. Therefore, emphasis in research needs to be on the timing of insemination relative to ovulation, and thus on the detection of ovulation.  相似文献

Fixed-time AI (TAI) after GnRH-PGF(2alpha)-GnRH treatment is a method to achieve pregnancies in dairy herds without estrous detection. However, cows that fail to respond to the initial GnRH may have compromised TAI conception rates due to asynchronous ovarian response. This study documented the percentage of GnRH-treated Holstein cows (n=345) in two herds that displayed estrus at an inopportune time for optimum TAI conception rate (< or =48h post-PGF(2alpha); premature estrus (PE)) and compared conception rates of two TAI protocols in cows that did not display PE. At biweekly herd health exams, cows diagnosed as not pregnant to a previous AI and cows >80 days postpartum with no AI were treated with 100 microg GnRH (day -7) and 25mg PGF(2alpha) (day 0). Cows detected in PE by twice-daily visual observation from day -7 to day 2 were bred by AI 8-12h later. Cows not detected in PE were randomly assigned by parity, body condition score, and postpartum interval to receive either: (1) 100microg GnRH at 48h after PGF(2alpha) and TAI 16 to 18h later (Ovsynch); or (2) TAI at 72h post-PGF(2alpha) and a concurrent 100 microg GnRH injection to those cows not detected in estrus between 48 and 72h post-PGF(2alpha) (modified Ovsynch (MOV)). All hormone injections were im. Twenty percent (68/345) of the cows were detected in estrus before 48 after PGF(2alpha), of which 5% (17/345) were detected in estrus before PGF(2alpha) (< or =day 0). Herd influenced the percentage of cows in the PE group (herd A versus herd B; 25% versus 14%; P<0.05). Conception rates were not affected by treatment (PE versus Ovsynch versus MOV; 32% (21/65) versus 30% (37/125) versus 32% (47/145); P>0.10). However, within MOV-treated cows, conception rates were greater (P<0.05) in cows detected in estrus (46% (23/50)) compared with cows not detected in estrus (25% (24/95)). In conclusion, 20% of GnRH-treated cows displayed PE and necessitates estrous detection during this period if maximal pregnancy rates are to be achieved. Although additional estrous detection is required compared to Ovsynch, reduced cow handling and hormone usage, efficient use of expensive semen through greater conception rates in cows detected in estrus, and comparable TAI conception rates, suggests the MOV protocol may be a cost effective alternative to Ovsynch in many dairy herd reproductive management programs.  相似文献

Data were collected on reproductive, health and production events in 45 dairy herds distributed throughout southwestern and eastern Ontario. The data were collected between July 1990 and July 1993. The herds were serviced by 11 different veterinary practices. Herd size ranged from 19 to 231 lactating cows, but 90% of the herds consisted of fewer than 125 milking cows. Mean and median actual milk yields per cow per day were 46.0 and 52.3 lbs, respectively, with a minimum of 21.3 and maximum of 67.8 lbs. Mean and medium adjusted corrected milk yields were 56.0 and 62.3 lbs, reflecting mean and median average days in milk of 199.0 and 198.5 d, respectively. Mean and median days in milk at the first estrus were 85.1 and 83.9 d, respectively, at first service 94.0 and 88.9 d, and at conception 126.3 and 115.5 d. Mean and median percentages of days open > 120 were 27.7 and 23.1%, respectively. The mean estrus detection rate was 48.3%, with a minimum of 28.4% and a maximum of 64.2%. The mean first service conception rate was 48.2%, with a minimum of 27.0% and maximum of 72.1%. The mean overall conception rate was 46.7%, with a minimum of 29.8% and a maximum of 70.7%. Mean and median lactation lengths were 341.1 and 338.5 d and the mean and median average dry days were 62.0 and 67.0, respectively. The mean lactational removal rate was 20.6%, with a range of 4.3 to 40.5%. Reasons for culling were available for 1381 cows. Low production accounted for 23.7 % of the cullings; reproductive reasons, 20.6 %; dairy sales, 13.4%; mammary problems, 12.8%; and lameness, 9.9%. Lactational incidence rates for diseases were lower than previously reported for Ontario dairy herds. The most commonly used therapeutic agents were GnRH (10.5%) and PGF (11.7%).  相似文献

The objective of this retrospective analysis was to determine the effect of prostaglandin F2a (PGF2a) on conception rates in commercial dairy herds. During routine herd visits, cows were selected for palpation if they had been milking for at least 60 days and had not been observed in estrus, or if they had been inseminated at least 30 days prior to the study selection. Nonpregnant cows with a palpable corpus luteum of sufficient size were injected with PGF2a. The herdsmen were instructed to inseminate animals within 6 to 12 hours after the observed estrus. The insemination rate within 6 days of treatment was 77.6%. The conception rate for the treated animals (47.9%) was statistically the same as that for the nontreated controls (47.2%).  相似文献

The effect of a routine postpartum intrauterine infusion of 50 to 100 ml 2 % polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) -iodine solution on the reproductive performance of dairy cows was investigated in field trials. At a regular herd visit, alternate cows (n = 531) at around one month after calving (maximum 50 and minimum 20) were treated in utero with PVP-iodine. Additional cows (n = 474) were left untreated or were infused in utero with physiological saline and served as controls. The first service conception rate, overall conception rate within 180 d after calving, and average interval in days from parturition to conception were 48.5 and 74.5 %, 98 ± 36 d in the treated group and 54.9 and 75.9 %, 90 ± 34 d in the controls. Thus, the routine postpartum treatment with 2 % PVP-iodine solution was not effective in improving the reproductive efficiency of cows. The results were nearly the same in all groups, across herd, year of trial, parity, interval from parturition to treatment and dose of PVP-iodine solution. Besides, for cows with endometritis, an intrauterine infusion of PVP-iodine solution was not only ineffective but it was detrimental to fertility.  相似文献

Early detection of post-calving health problems is critical for dairy operations. Separating sick cows from the herd is important, especially in robotic-milking dairy farms, where searching for a sick cow can disturb the other cows’ routine. The objectives of this study were to develop and apply a behaviour- and performance-based health-detection model to post-calving cows in a robotic-milking dairy farm, with the aim of detecting sick cows based on available commercial sensors. The study was conducted in an Israeli robotic-milking dairy farm with 250 Israeli-Holstein cows. All cows were equipped with rumination- and neck-activity sensors. Milk yield, visits to the milking robot and BW were recorded in the milking robot. A decision-tree model was developed on a calibration data set (historical data of the 10 months before the study) and was validated on the new data set. The decision model generated a probability of being sick for each cow. The model was applied once a week just before the veterinarian performed the weekly routine post-calving health check. The veterinarian’s diagnosis served as a binary reference for the model (healthy–sick). The overall accuracy of the model was 78%, with a specificity of 87% and a sensitivity of 69%, suggesting its practical value.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the efficacy of a vaginal mucus impedance meter for the detection of estrus in the dairy cow. In Experiment 1 the positioning of the probe within the vaginal tract was examined in dairy cows (n=6) by measuring mucus impedance at 5-cm intervals during probe withdrawal and comparing these fixed distance measurements with the depth within the vaginal tract at which the lowest impedance measurement was recorded. Measurements at 15 and 20 cm from the vulva were significantly lower than at other fixed depths, but did not show a reduction during estrus. The lowest recording upon withdrawal of the probe, which usually occurred between 15 and 20 cm from the vulva, was significantly lower than at any fixed depth recordings and was reduced proportionate during estrus to 0.14 of its non-estrus value. In Experiment 2 the accuracy of the probe to confirm estrus in cows exhibiting possible estrus signs was examined. Dairy cows (n=191) were inseminated either on the basis of herdsman observation of behavior alone (Treatment A) or on the basis of herdsman observation with cows exhibiting signs of estrous behaviour, but not standing to be mounted, being tested for vaginal mucus impedance (Treatment B). There were no significant treatment differences in the estrus detection rate, conception rate or other reproductive performance parameters. However, in 12% of cows in Treatment B, measurement of vaginal mucus impedance detected an extra estrous event, giving a theoretical increase in the estrus detection rate from 0.67 to 0.74 detected/predicted estrous events. It was concluded that when using a vaginal probe the lowest value in the vaginal tract should be sought, but that using the probe as an adjunct to herdsman's observation would not greatly increase estrus detection rate.  相似文献

Two field trials were designed to evaluate use of the prostaglandin F analog cloprostenol (CP) in dairy cattle with unobserved estrus and a palpably mature corpus luteum (CL). In Trial 1, 98 cows were treated with CP (500 μg IM) and 83 were given saline. Cows in both groups were assigned to be inseminated based on observed signs of estrus. Cows treated with CP were inseminated sooner than controls although heat detection still presented some difficulty. Conception rates were the same for both groups. In Trial 2, 154 cows were treated with CP for unobserved estrus and were assigned to be inseminated at estrus (78 cows) or were inseminated twice by appointment at 72 and 96 hours after treatment (76 cows). Appointment breeding eliminated problems associated with detection of estrus so nearly all cows were inseminated soon after treatment. In addition, cows bred twice by appointment had a higher conception rate than those bred based on signs of estrus. Induction of luteolysis with the prostaglandin F analog CP in cows with unobserved estrus and a CL should prove to be a very effective addition to reproductive herd health programs. Successful use of CP for this purpose is dependent upon accurate diagnosis of the presence of a mature CL. In these trials 83 (92.4%) of 90 cows sampled had blood serum progesterone concentrations indicative (≥ 2.0 ng/ml) of significant luteal tissue activity.  相似文献

The objectives of this trial were to determine the effects of 0.5 mg estradiol benzoate administered intramuscularly 24 h after the removal of progesterone-containing intravaginal devices on the occurrence and timing of estrus, synchronized pregnancy rate and synchronized conception rate in dairy heifers. A clinical trial was conducted involving 750 dairy heifers in 13 herds. Within each herd heifers were randomly allocated to 1 of 2 estrus synchronization treatments. All heifers received a CIDR-B progesterone-containing intravaginal device containing a 10 mg estradiol benzoate capsule for 12 d. Twenty-four hours after CIDR-B removal one group received 0.5 mg, im estradiol benzoate while the other group received an intramuscular injection of a placebo. Estrus detection was performed at 48 and 72 h after intravaginal device removal, and heifers detected in estrus at those times were inseminated. Administration of estradiol benzoate 24 h after removal of CIDR-B devices significantly increased the number of heifers exhibiting estrus within the observation period (96.1 vs 90.5%; P < 0.01). It also altered the onset of estrus so that significantly more heifers were in estrus (86.6 vs 72.3%; P < 0.01) and conceived (47.1 vs 37.5%; P < 0.05) by 48 h after CIDR-B device removal. The synchronized conception rate was unaffected by treatment. The distribution of estrus was such that fixed-time insemination after estrus synchronization with this treatment program may be recommended.  相似文献

In response to increasing efforts for reducing concentrate inputs to organic dairy production in grassland-rich areas of Europe, a long-term study was conducted, which assessed the impacts of concentrate reductions on cows’ performance, health, fertility and average herd age. In total, 42 Swiss commercial organic dairy cattle farms were monitored over 6 years (‘Y0’, 2008/09 until ‘Y5’, 2013/14). In comparison with overall data of Swiss herdbooks (including conventional and organic farms), the herds involved in the project had lower milk yields, similar milk solids, shorter calving intervals and higher average lactation numbers. During the first 3 project years farmers reduced the concentrate proportion (i.e. cereals, oilseeds and grain legumes) in the dairy cows’ diets to varying degrees. In Y0, farms fed between 0% and 6% (dietary dry matter proportion per year) of concentrates. During the course of the study they changed the quantity of concentrates to voluntarily chosen degrees. Retrospectively, farms were clustered into five farm groups: Group ‘0-conc’ (n=6 farms) already fed zero concentrates in Y0 and stayed at this level. Group ‘Dec-to0’ (n=11) reduced concentrates to 0 during the project period. Groups ‘Dec-strong’ (n=8) and ‘Dec-slight’ (n=12) decreased concentrate amounts by >50% and <50%, respectively. Group ‘Const-conc’ (n=5 farms) remained at the initial level of concentrates during the project. Milk recording data were summarised and analysed per farm and project year. Lactation number and calving intervals were obtained from the databases of the Swiss breeders’ associations. Dietary concentrate amounts and records of veterinary treatments were obtained from the obligatory farm documentations. Data were analysed with GLMs. Daily milk yields differed significantly between farm groups already in Y0, being lowest in groups 0-conc (16.0 kg) and Dec-to0 (16.7 kg), and highest in groups Dec-slight (19.6 kg) and Const-conc (19.2 kg). Milk yield decreases across the years within groups were not significant, but urea contents in milk decreased significantly during the course of the project. Milk protein, somatic cell score, fat–protein ratio, average lactation number, calving interval and frequency of veterinary treatments did not differ by group and year. In conclusion, 5 years of concentrate reduction in low-input Swiss organic dairy farms, affected neither milk composition, nor fertility and veterinary treatments. Milk yields tended to decline, but at a low rate per saved kilogram of concentrate.  相似文献

The animal health and welfare status in European organic dairy production does not in all aspects meet the organic principles and consumers’ expectations and needs to be improved. To achieve this, tailored herd health planning, targeted to the specific situation of individual farms could be of use. The aim of this study was to apply herd health planning in a structured participatory approach, with impact matrix analysis, not previously used in this context, in European organic dairy farms and to assess changes in animal health and welfare. Herd health planning farm visits were conducted on 122 organic dairy farms in France, Germany and Sweden. The farmer, the herd veterinarian and/or an advisor took part in the farm discussions. The researcher served as facilitator. Baseline data on the animal health status of the individual farm, collected from national milk recording schemes, were presented as an input for the discussion. Thereafter a systematic impact matrix analysis was performed. This was to capture the complexity of individual farms with the aim to identify the farm-specific factors that could have a strong impact on animal health. The participants (i.e. farmer, veterinarian and advisor) jointly identified areas in need of improvement, taking the health status and the interconnected farm system components into account, and appropriate actions were jointly identified. The researcher took minutes during the discussions, and these were shared with the participants. No intervention was made by the researcher, and further actions were left with the participants. The number of actions per farm ranged from 0 to 22. The change in mortality, metabolic diseases, reproductive performance and udder health was assessed at two time points, and potential determinators of the change were evaluated with linear regression models. A significant association was seen between change in udder health, as measured by the somatic cell count, and country. At the first follow-up, a significant association was also found between change in the proportion of prolonged calving interval and the farmers’ desire to improve reproductive health as well as with an increase in herd size, but this was not seen at the second follow-up. The degree of implementation of the actions was good (median 67%, lower quartile 40%, upper quartile 83%). To conclude, the degree of implementation was quite high, improvement of animal health could not be linked to the herd health planning approach. However, the approach was highly appreciated by the participants and deserves further study.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine time of ovulation, monitored by transcutaneous ultrasonography, relative to the duration of estrus in gilts. We exposed 92 cyclic gilts, Camborough x Canabrid terminal line, at Day 19 of their third estrous cycle to vasectomized boars every 6 h for the detection estrus. Transcutaneous ultrasonography was performed every 6 h, starting 24 h after the onset estrus, to determine time of ovulation. Estrus duration was, on average, 52.6 h (range: 30 to 72 h), and ovulation occurred between 30 and 60 h after the onset of estrus (mean: 44 h), about 85 % of the way through the estrus period. The time of ovulation during estrus was dependent on the duration of estrus (Time of ovulation = (duration of estrus) x 0.409 + 22.7; r = 0.57, P = 0.0001). Prediction of the time of ovulation in relation to duration of estrus is important for determining the optimal time for inseminating gilts. This knowledge would contribute to an improvement in the fertilization rate and in reproductive efficiency of the breeding herd.  相似文献
