The behaviour of Woodland Kingfishers Halcyon senegalensis was studied during the breeding season. Inactive postures were dependent on alertness, perch height, and time of day. Prey was mainly grasshoppers, captured by diving from elevated perches. Breeding territories were near water, and were maintained by a long-range vocal display, a short-range visual display and attacks on intruders. Other bird species were also attacked. Courtship involved “duets”, display flights, and allofeeding. A late wet season in 1974 apparently caused delayed migration, and postponement of all breeding behaviour except inspection of nest-holes.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the guitarfish Rhinobatos percellens was studied from 751 specimens caught by bottom pair trawlers off the coast of São Paulo, Brazil, between c. 24° 00′ S; 45° 15′ W and c. 25° 10′ S; 47° 52′ W, from September 2007 to August 2009. The total length (LT) and total mass (MT) relationship for males and females combined was MT = 1·29E‐06 LT3·15 (r = 0·99, n = 751). The mean LT of sexually mature specimens was 548 mm for males and 583 mm for females. Clasper growth was allometric and showed three distinct phases. Most claspers were calcified in specimens of c. 550 mm LT. The mean diameter of the largest oocyte was 29·8 mm, the mean ovarian fecundity was seven oocytes and ovulation occurred between August and November. Uterine fecundity ranged from two to 13 embryos (mean of five embryos). Larger females had higher litter sizes and larger embryos; the size‐at‐birth was c. 200 mm LT. The hepato‐somatic index oscillated seasonally for males and females; the gonado‐somatic index had little variation in males, but varied seasonally in females. The presence of many non‐pregnant adult females and of encapsulated eggs during two consecutive seasons suggests a resting period between gestations and the possibility of diapause.  相似文献

We estimated age at attainment of sexual maturity and examined reproductive seasonality for male spotted dolphins, Stenella attenuata , from the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Maturity was determined by histological examination of testes. Average age at sexual maturation was 14.7 yr (the mean of two readers' age estimates). Testis and epididymis weight and seminiferous tubule diameters were reliable indicators of maturity, whereas age, length and color phase were less reliable. Seasonality was determined by changes in testis and epididymis weight, relative quantity of spermatids and spermatozoa, and lumen diameter, as well as an index of testis development (weight of the right testis and epididymis divided by length of the right testis). Testis and epididymis weights and index values peaked in July and August, midway between two predicted mating seasons for the northern offshore stock, but spermatozoa levels were elevated during the predicted breeding seasons.  相似文献

The kidneys of the Mediterranean Gecko, Hemidactylus turcicus (Gekkonidae), were investigated using light and electron microscopy with the primary focus placed on morphology of the sexual segment of the kidney. The nephrons of male H. turcicus are composed of five distinct regions: 1) a renal corpuscle and glomerulus, 2) a proximal convoluted tubule, 3) an intermediate segment, 4) a distal convoluted tubule, and 5) the sexual segment of the kidney/collecting duct. Female H. turcicus is similar but lack a sexual segment of the kidney. The sexual segment of the kidney is hypertrophied during the months of March through August, which corroborates previous reports of reproductive activity. During inactive months, the sexual segment of the kidney is nondiscernable from the collecting ducts. The sexual segment consists of tall columnar epithelial cells with basally positioned nuclei. Perinuclear Golgi complexes and rough endoplasmic reticulum are present. Secretory granules, which fill the apices of the epithelial cells, are electron dense and released into the lumen by a merocrine secretory process. Narrow intercellular canaliculi separate each epithelial cell and are sealed by tight junctions at the luminal aspect. Basally, leukoctyes are observed within the intercellular canaliculi and outside the basal lamina. Mast cells can be found just outside the basal lamina in close association with renal capillaries. The sexual segment of the kidney of H. turcicus is similar to that of three unrelated lizards for which ultrastructure was investigated with secretion mode being the major difference Also, H. turcicus is similar to most other lizards in that complete regression occurs during reproductive inactivity, but differs in this trait from the skink, Scincella lateralis, and most snakes which display a hypertrophied sexual segment of the kidney throughout the entire year. Although some unique similarities appear during the optimization, no direct patterns or directions are observed, and only the molecular based phylogeny resolves the ancestral condition of the Squamata as the sexual segment of the kidney being observed in the distal convoluted tubule, collecting duct, and ureter. The centric diatom, Thalassiosira weissflogii Grun., can be induced to undergo spermatogenesis by exposing cells maintained at saturating levels of continuous light to either dim light or darkness. Using flow cytometry to determine the relative DNA and chlorophyll content per cell, the number of cells within a population that responded to and induction signal was measured. From 0 to over 90% of a population differentiated into male gametes depending upon both the induction trigger and the population examined, regardless of the average cell size of the population. Through the use of synchromized cultures, we demonstrated that responsiveness to an induction trigger was a function of cell cycle stage; cells in early G1 were not yet committed to complete mitosis and were induced to form male gametes, whereas cells further along in their cell cycle were unresponsive to these same cues. A simple model combining the influence of light on the mitotic cell cycle and on the induction of spermatogenesis is proposed to explain the observed diversity in population responses to changes in light conditions.  相似文献

It has recently been argued that because the genetic load borne by an asexual species resulting from segregation, relative to a comparable sexual population, is greater than two, sex can overcome its twofold disadvantage and succeed. We evaluate some of the assumptions underlying this argument and discuss alternative assumptions. Further, we simulate the dynamics of competition between sexual and asexual types. We find that for populations of size 100 and 500 the advantages of segregation do not outweigh the cost of producing males. We conclude that, at least for small populations, drift and the cost of sex govern the evolution of sexuality, not selection or segregation. We believe, however, that if sexual and asexual populations were isolated for a sufficiently long period, segregation might impart a fitness advantage upon sexuals that could compensate for the cost of sex and allow sexuals to outcompete asexuals upon their reunion.  相似文献

Reproduction in Rhoicosphenia curvata (Kütz.) Grun. is isogamous. The two auxospores formed expand parallel to the apical axes of the gametangial cells. Expansion is bipolar and leads to the formation of a slightly curved, tapering cell, in which the initial valves are laid down. The perizonium consists of transverse and longitudinal bands. The transverse series, of 35 or so bands, is laid down centrifugally as the auxospore expands and can be classified into three groups on the basis of band morphology. All except the central band are open hoops, orientated so that their ends lie in the midline of the less convex, ventral side of the auxospore. The bands have fimbriate margins on one or both sides, and overlap one another from center to either pole. The longitudinal series includes 5 bands—a wide central band, with two on either side: again, the bands overlap one another from the center outwards. The initial epivalve of the new generation forms beneath the dorsal side of the auxospore, on the opposite side from the longitudinal perizonial series. Comparisons are made with other genera and the relevance of auxospore studies to an understanding of diatom morphogenesis is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Sex allocation (male allocation/female allocation) as a function of selfing rate is studied in the wild riceOryza perennis. Using dry weight measures, the male/female ratio is linearly related to the selfing rate. This linear relationship may have a fairly radical interpretation in terms of current sex allocation theory. It suggests that the intermediate selfing rates are themselves maintained by a form of frequency dependence. In particular, the linearity suggests: (i) the relative fitness of a selfed versus outcrossed offspring decreases with increased selfing; (ii) in equilibrium, a selfed offspring is approximately half as fit as an outcrossed offspring; (iii) the frequency dependence, being the opposite of that proposed in most selfing models, may result from the same forces thought to be involved in the maintenance of sex itself, and (iv) the position of the fitted line contains information about the plant's use of wind pollination for male reproduction. It suggests that wind shows much less mixing of pollen than previously assumed, and/or that there are severe morphological constraints on pollen presentation. The above interpretations are clearly speculative and tentative. Possible problems in the analysis, and some alternatives for data interpretation are discussed.  相似文献

The present study was designed to develop a technique for crossing and to gain insight into how sexual reproduction contributes to the maintenance of local populations of Ulva compressa L. To examine the durations of gamete motility and conjugation ability, freshly released gametes were incubated for various periods of time prior to mixing both mating types. The conjugation ability of the gametes gradually declined after being released from the thalli when the gametes were incubated without mixing with the opposite mating type. The ability to conjugate decreased by half after 6 h, although most of the gametes remained motile. The gametes released 4 h later had the same level of conjugation ability when mixed immediately after releasing. When the mature thalli were wrapped in a moist paper towel to prevent gametes from being released, the gametes were preservable for 7 h without a significant decrease in their conjugation ability. Conjugation occurred soon after mixing gametes of both mating types and reached a plateau after 30 s. However, conjugation rates did not exceed a rate of ~70%, even though freshly released gametes were used. Interestingly, a portion of the gametes newly conjugated 30 min after mixing both mating types, and conjugation rates reached a second plateau at ~90%. Gametes with delayed conjugation are provided some period of time that allows them to be transported away and increases their chances of mating with more distant populations, thus contributing to the maintenance of genetic variation.  相似文献

In the freshwater hydrozoan Hydra carnea, the egg, matured and grown between the mesoglea and the epitheliomuscular cells of the ectoderm, is extruded after the emission of the second polar body. Surrounded by a clear jelly layer the egg remains attached to the polyp. Sperm which are released from the testicular sacs of male polyps are attracted by the egg. The jelly layer is penetrated only at the site of emission of the polar bodies by sperm which lack a structurally distinct acrosome. One sperm fuses with the egg at that site where the female pronucleus is found to lie close to the egg membrane. After fertilization and cleavage an acellular embryotheca is secreted by the blastomeres. These events were investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy.  相似文献

Two year classes of cultured male yellowtail flounder Limanda ferruginea were followed in order to examine puberty and recrudescence at the gonadal level, and to assess the impacts of culture conditions on male reproduction. Cultured males demonstrated a propensity for maturation as 1 year‐old fish. Pubertal activation of testicular steroid production was associated with the appearance of primary spermatocytes, but a single case of a premeiotic endocrine activation was detected. The onset of puberty occurred during September and October, when adults were post‐spawned or in early recrudescence. Once initiated, pubertal development proceeded in an uninterrupted progression to full maturity by June at 22 months of age. Spermatogenetic activity during the autumn led to a peak in the gonado‐somatic index and total testicular mass by December. Milt could be first expressed from some pubertal males at this time, well in advance of the May to August spawning period in captivity. Meiotic activity could be absent from the testes by the spring, but residual areas of meiotic activity were found in pubertal males of one year class which may indicate a slower spermatogenetic rate. Androgen levels peaked during prespawning and early spawning; 11‐ketotestosterone (11‐KT) was the dominant androgen throughout spermatogenesis. Recrudescing 2 year‐old males showed greater testicular development and androgen production. Spermatogenetic patterns were similar to those seen in pubertal males, with the distinction that recrudescing males had a more discernable mitotic phase prior to meiotic activity; mitotic and meiotic activity overlapped considerably during early puberty. Testicular development well in advance of spawning may confer an evolutionary advantage to males of this cold‐water marine flatfish.  相似文献

A comparative histochemical study of the nature and distribution of acidic and neutral cell wall polysaccharides was conducted on marine sexual and asexual filaments of the red alga Bangia atropurpurea (Roth) C. Ag. Outer and inner walls of this species were clearly partitioned according to staining and transmission electron microscopic characteristics. Neutral polysaccharides were detected in the outer coating (cuticle) but were absent from outer and inner walls of all filaments. Acidic polysaccharides were noted in the outer wall material but not in the inner wall layers of any filaments at any developmental stages. The major staining component of vegetative regions of sexual material and all regions of asexual filaments was a highly sulfated polymer. During sexual reproduction only there was a generalized change in the nature of the acidic component, characterized by a decrease in intensity of staining for sulfates in both male and female filaments and the appearance, in female filaments only, of polysaccharides which presumably were carboxylated. Spermatia attached to both male and female filaments in regions where sexual differentiation was initiated and where changes in the outer wall components commenced.  相似文献

Sexual reproduction is induced in the dinoflagelate Peridinium cinctum f. ovoplanum Lindemann when exponentially growing cells are inoculated into nitrogen deficient medium. Small, naked vegetative cells, produced by division of the thecate cells, then act as gametes. The zygote remains motile for 12–13 days during which time it enlarges and the theca which it forms becomes warty. Thirteen to 14 day s following plasmogamy the zygote is nonmotile, the protoplast contracts, a large red oil droplet appears, the wall thickens and becomes chitinized. This hypnozygote germinates within 7–8 weeks at 20 c producing 1 post-zygotic cell retaining the large red oil droplet. The presence of 4 nuclei in these post-zygotic cells may be demonstrated by staining them with acetocarmine. Two of these nuclei are smaller than the other two and probably abort. One may infer that meiosis occurs immediately prior to or at the germinartion of the hypnozygote. This post-zygotic cell divides within 24 h into 2 daughter cells each with a promment red oil droplet. These daughter cells divide after 2–3 days into ordinary vegetative cells. Attempts to induce sexual reproduction by changes in temperature or light and by inoculation of cells into media deficient in a number of basic elements were unsuccessful.  相似文献

The allogamous raphid diatom Achnanthes longipes C. A. Agardh possesses a complex breeding system involving interactions between three types of clone: monoecious, unisexual and bisexual. Previous studies showed that these three types can be crossed with each other, with a tendency for sexual characteristics to be inherited: inbred monoecious lineages gave rise to monoecious or, very rarely, to bisexual clones, while inbred unisexual lineages yielded unisexual and bisexual clones. The current paper reports on the progeny of crosses between monoecious and unisexual clones and their inbred offspring. All three types of clone appeared in the F1 and F2, although unisexual clones of opposite sex to the parental clone were not found. Inbreeding depression was observed and also a tendency for ‘normal’ auxosporulation (producing two auxospores per pair of gametangia) to be replaced by ‘reduced’ or ‘intermediate’ auxosporulation (producing one auxospore per pair). In addition, patterns of incompatibility were observed that were not seen during earlier studies of clones isolated directly from nature. These included the inability of some F1 clones to mate with each other, in spite of compatibility with all other clones examined (unisexual, bisexual and monoecious).  相似文献

The capitate and rectangular demes of the freshwater epipelic diatom Sellaphora pupula (Kütz.) Mereschk. are dioecious, the first such report for any freshwater diatom. Sexual differentiation, which is probably determined genetically, involves recognition at the cell surface as well as differences in gamete behavior (one gametangium produces an active "male" gamete, the other a passive "female" gamete). In culture, successful sexual reproduction occurs only when compatible clones are mixed. All cells of a clone behave identically in interclonal crosses, being either male or female, regardless of the stage of the life cycle, in contrast to the sequential hermaphroditism of centric diatoms. Males and females have identical frustule morphology. As in other diatoms, there is an upper size threshold for sexual reproduction, below which cells become progressively easier to sexualize. In culture, sexual interactions occur in cells much smaller than those ever seen in natural populations, so that in nature the sexual size range is effectively open. Natural populations almost always contain sexualizable cells; often, most of the cells are below the upper sexual size threshold. Male gametangia are, on average, slightly larger than females in the capitate deme, which may be produced by preferential polyandry, depleting the population of males and making them younger at mating. Rarely, selfing occurs producing zygotes, but these abort before producing initial cells. The sizes of the gametangia and initial cells are correlated but this does not invalidate the use of "cardinal points" of the life cycle in taxonomy. No interbreeding occurs between the rectangular and capitate demes. However, when males of one deme are mixed with females of the other, there is a stimulation of activity, as during the early stages of pairing in compatible intrademic crosses.  相似文献

Homothallic sexual reproduction in Chlamydomonas monoica Strehlow culminated in the formation of mature, chloroform-resistant zygospores (zygotes) in clonal culture. Early in the zygote maturation process, a distinctive “primary zygote wall” was released into the culture medium where it remained stable for at least several days. This wall appeared as a rigid, darkly-outlined, and often multilayered structure, as viewed by phase contrast microscopy. From a sample, of 2500 individual clones isolated after ethyl methanesulfonate mutagenesis, five maturation-defective strains (zym) produced abnormal zygotes which failed to release a primary zygote wall, failed to develop the normal reticulate zygospore wall, and disintegrated within five days. These strains were utilized to identify additional mutants which were sexually competent, but self-sterile (het). Mixed cultures of the zym and het mutant strains were found to contain numerous, fully-matured, chloroform-resistant zygospores and discarded primary zygote walls. In combination, the two types of mutants provided a useful system for the selective recovery of heterozygous zygospores, thus facilitating genetic studies on a homothallic Chlamydomonas.  相似文献
