THE PELAGIC DISTRIBUTION OF SEA-BIRDS IN THE WESTERN INDIAN OCEAN   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

The present paper summarises observations made during the International Indian Ocean Expedition on board the R.R.S.' Discovery, from August to November 1963 and from February to September 1964 in the Indian Ocean north of 20° S and west of 70° E. In 1963 work was carried out in the Somali Basin. In 1964 a series of transects were made over the ocean, the main purpose of which was to investigate the system of equatorial currents and the changes in the sea associated with the onset of the Southwest Monsoon in May. The Tropical Indian Ocean is briefly described. Except for local concentrations, the surface layers are poor in nutrient salts and plankton. There is a seasonal reversal of winds and surface currents in the Arabian Sea, but seasonal changes become less marked further south. Previous ornithological observations in the western Indian Ocean are mostly confined to the Arabian Sea or to the island groups. Thus, existing information on the pelagic range of pantropical species is incomplete. Observations made on each transect across the Indian Ocean in 1964 are summarised and compared with oceanographic data collected at the same time. General conclusions are not possible on the basis of so little information, though there appeared to be some relationship between the distribution of certain species and wind or current belts. The only marked discontinuity recorded was a concentration of Puffinus pacificus and Gygis alba at the northern edge of the Equatorial Counter-current at 58° E in March. Observations made on transects that were repeated before and after the onset of the Southwest Monsoon suggested that Sterna fuscata concentrates in the equatorial region as the monsoon develops. In general, both plankton and sea-birds were more abundant at 58° E than at 671/4° E. An analysis of the presence or absence of sea-birds during each observation period, which lasted an average of one hour, established the difference between pelagic species and those largely restricted to within 50 miles of their breeding stations. There was no evidence of any correlation with zooplankton abundance, though birds of all species taken together were commonest where flying-fish were most abundant and S. fuscata appeared to be commonest in cool-water areas with strong winds, i.e. the Trade-wind belts. It was not possible to sample the food organisms of sea-birds quantitatively. Sea-bird observations in the Indian Ocean more than 200 miles from the continental coasts are summarized and compared with previous observations. The little information collected in the Indian Ocean agrees with previous work in the Pacific Ocean, where sea-birds are commonest in areas of convergence, and not where local upwelling and an associated concentration of plankton occur, such as on the equator. This may be due to the fact that populations of organisms on which sea-birds feed develop or concentrate a considerable time after upwelling of nutrient-rich water occurs. Since few sea-birds were seen feeding, it seems likely that available food is scarce and that much time is required to locate areas where it is abundant. Finally, evidence is presented to indicate how some sea-bird species may avoid or reduce competition by feeding at different distances offshore, or in different geographical areas.  相似文献

The birds of the Cocos-Keeling Islands, in the Indian Ocean, are discussed in the light of specimens and data collected during a stay of eleven months in 1941. Seventeen species were found to be breeding. One of these was an indigenous land bird, four were land birds known to have been introduced, and the remainder were sea birds mostly confined to North Keeling. During this period examples of seventeen species of strays or visitors were taken, of which ten probably occur regularly though in small numbers, while the other seven are true vagrants. Eight of these birds have not so far been recorded from Christmas Island.
Eleven birds listed from the islands by previous visitors were not present in 1941. Two of these were introduced but have failed to maintain themselves, and one, Egrctta garzetta nigripes , seems to be an occasional vagrant. The remaining eight records are all unsatisfactory.  相似文献

We conducted a cetacean survey in the pelagic western tropical Indian Ocean (WTIO) aboard an 85-m research vessel from March to July 1995, covering 9,784 linear km. Using 25 × binoculars and line-transect methods, we recorded 589 sightings of 21 species. Stenella longirostris was the most abundant cetacean, in terms of number of individuals sighted, by an order of magnitude above any other species, while Physeter macrocephalus was the most frequently sighted, in terms of number of schools. Twelve species were widespread, seven were rare, and two were localized; our sightings include new distributional records for 12 species. Significant observations included the following: (1) Delphinus cf. tropicalis was abundant off the coast of Oman (16 sightings) and readily distinguishable in the field from D. delphis and D. capensis, (2) Balaenoptera musculus was fairly common and localized in the area of the Maldives (17 sightings), and (3) three sightings were made of an unidentified bottlenose whale tentatively referred to as Indopacetus (i. e., Mesoplodon) pacificus. We recorded 26 mixed-species cetacean schools, 43 schools with which seabirds associated, and 17 schools associated with tuna. Notable among these were mixed aggregations of Stenella attenuata, S. longirostris, yellowfin tuna, and seabirds. The cetacean community of the WTIO was similar to that of the eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) and the Gulf of Mexico (GM) in several respects. First, differences in abundance rank of individual species were small, with the result that common species were common and rare species were rare, regardless of ocean. Second, these differences in abundance were due primarily to differences in encounter rate, which varied with ocean by as much as 3,000%, and less so to school size, which generally varied less than 100%. Third, regardless of ocean, three species comprised the majority of cetaceans in the community, Stenella attenuata, S. longirostris, and S. coeruleoalba, representing 62%-82% of all individuals for all species. However, the rank order of abundance for these three species differed with ocean. Most notably, S. attenuata was abundant in the ETP and GM (abundance rank = 2 and 1, respectively) but much less common in the WTIO (abundance rank = 6). Although habitat preferences for S. attenuata appear to overlap considerably with those of S. longirostris in the ETP, our results suggest there may actually be significant differences between these two species. Detailed analysis of oceanographic correlates of distribution will be necessary in order to understand fully the habitat requirements of these pelagic dolphins, often the most conspicuous elements of tropical cetacean communities around the world.  相似文献

Observations and experiments on both shagbark (Carya ovata; 2n = 32) and mockernut (C. tomentosa; 2n = 64) hickories in a New Jersey forest were performed over a 2-year period to determine the mechanisms operating both to maintain reproductive fidelity and to regulate fruit initiation. Phenological observations indicated significant differences between the species for almost all vegetative and reproductive characters examined; however, a large amount of overlap was also observed. Pollination experiments indicated that pollen limitation is not a significant factor in reducing fruit set in these anemophilous species. Pollen-ovule ratios ranged from 1 to 25 × 106. Pollen was 80–90% viable at time of shedding. The large surface area of vegetative structures (e.g., leaves) at the time of pollination may retard the flow of pollen into and out of the canopy and thus increase self-pollination. A full diallel cross, replicated 5 times, was made among 8 trees (4 trees of each species) to characterize combining ability and compatibility relationships. All trees were found to be both geitonogamous and xenogamous to varying degrees. A high frequency of putative interploidal cross-compatibility was also observed. Fruits from these interspecific crosses were found to be germinable. Observations on individual trees suggested that dichogamy may help to reduce selfing and promote outcrossing in this breeding system. While most trees exhibited a temporal separation of genders, the trait was found to be quite plastic (i.e., trees switched between protogyny and protandry between years). Pistillate flowers were receptive for all trees within a species during the same general time period; however, pollen shedding varied considerably among trees and between years. Both species appear to be utilizing a broad array of mechanisms in order to maintain reproductive fidelity and adequate fruit set.  相似文献

The number of seals on shore at Tugidak Island (Gulf of Alaska) declined 72%–85% between 1976 and 1988 and increased during the 1990s. We compared pupping phenology and the ratio of pupping-period counts to molting-period counts between declining (1976–1979) and increasing (1994–1998) years, and examined the sex/age structure of seals ashore during the 1990s. In the 1970s the onset and peak of pupping occurred 6–18 d later than in the 1990s. Rate of pup abandonment was higher in 1978 than in the 1990s. Between 1994 and 1995, the maximum and mean number of seals ashore increased >50%, largely due to an increase in non-pups. From 1995 to 1998, the sex/age structure of seals ashore was similar among years. We observed three to four times as many seals during the molting period than during the pupping period in the 1970s, whereas similar numbers were ashore during these periods in the 1990s, perhaps reflecting changes in demography and/or haul-out behavior. Changes in pupping phenology and demography may reflect environmental changes, such as food availability, and when monitored in conjunction with population counts, may help us better interpret changes in the number of seals ashore.  相似文献

We estimated the number of live Australian fur seal pups using capture-markresights, direct ground counts, or aerial photography at all breeding sites following the pupping season of November-December 2002. Pups were recorded at 17 locations; nine previously known colony sites, one newly recognized colony and seven haul-out sites where pups are occasionally born. In order of size, the colonies were Lady Julia Percy Island (5,899 pups), Seal Rocks (4,882), The Skerries (2,486), Judgment Rocks (2,427), Kanowna Island (2,301), Moriarty Rocks (1,007), Reid Rocks (384), West Moncoeur Island (257), and Tenth Island (124). The newly recognized site was Rag Island, in the Cliffy Group, where we recorded 30 pups. We also recorded pups at the following haul-out sites: Cape Bridge-water (7 pups), Bull Rock (7), Wright Rock (5), Twin Islet (1), The Friars (1), He des Phoques (1), and Montague Island (1). In total, we estimate there were 19,819 (SE = 163) live pups at the time of the counts. We discuss trends in pup numbers and derive current population estimates for the Australian fur seal.  相似文献

Temperate Australia has a speciose highly endemic algal flora. This study explored the influence of geographical isolation between islands, depth and exposure to ocean swells on the diversity of macroalgae in the Recherche Archipelago (Western Australia). Macroalgae were harvested (0.25‐m2 quadrats) from sites at two exposures (sheltered and exposed to wave energy), three depths (<10, 10–20, and 21–28 m), and two island groups (three islands within Esperance Bay and three islands outside the bay). A total of 220 species were collected. Species richness and biomass were significantly different at the smallest spatial scale (0.25 m2), and density of overstory species decreased with depth. Results from analysis of similarity tests suggested that macroalgal assemblages differed with depth, exposure and to a lesser extent with island group. Assemblage differences were often associated with particular overstory or understory taxa and not the entire assemblage composition. Average species richness·0.25 m?2 ranged from 13 to 29 species, typically with a few species contributing more than 50% of average biomass. Species richness was maintained by species turnover at the 0.25‐m2 spatial scale. Our results suggest that richness in temperate Australia is maintained by turnover of broadly distributed species. More dominant species in assemblages were associated with differences in depth and exposure to ocean swells. Our findings support the hypothesis of a geographical transition of dominant species from kelp‐dominated in the west to a fucalean‐dominated assemblage in the Recherche Archipelago and east of the Great Australian Bight.  相似文献

From 1974–1976, Laughing Doves Streptopelia senegalensis raised an observed total of 436 young in 619 nest attempts, giving a breeding success of 0,70 young per pair nest attempt, or an overall success of 0,35 young per egg. Breeding success, estimated by computing the probability of survival of an egg through the incubation period, and of a chick through the nestling period suggest that the breeding success is about 0,33 young per egg. Nests were found in every month of the year, though there was a tendency for breeding to be concentrated during the late rainy season and the dry season. The mean annual population size of the Laughing Dove in the study area was estimated at 221 adults and juveniles by one method and at 237 adults and juveniles by another method. The number of young produced each year is correlated with the estimated population size for each year.  相似文献

The primary moult season of the adult Rock Pigeon Columba guinea on Dassen Island is spread over at least nine months. Individual duration is estimated at eight months. Adult birds were heaviest in the winter months outside the breeding season. Overlap between the breeding and moulting seasons occurred and evidence was obtained of incubating birds with active primary moult. Juveniles were lighter than adults. Ossiella pacifica gen. et sp. nov. is described from sub tidal habitats (5–19 m) in the central (Hawaiian Islands) and southwestern (Norfolk Island) Pacific Ocean. Plants consist of limited prostrate axes that rapidly become erect and form ecorticate, subdichotomously branched axes bearing up to seven (mostly six) di-/to trichotomously branched, pigmented, determinate, quickly caducous whorled laterals from subapical axial cells. Two to five tetrasporangza are borne directly on the inflated basal cells of pigmented determinate laterals. One to two spermatangial fascicles are similarly placed in male plants. Subapical procarps are borne on a three-celled fertile axis, which occupies the same position as an indeterminate branch, being itself displaced laterally by the continued growth of the indeterminate axis. Procarps are bicarpogonial, the sterile cell normally associated with the supporting cell in procarps of the Griffithsieae being converted into a functional four-celled carpogonial branch . Ossiella is compared with the other membus of the tribe, and a dichotomous key to the genera is offered. On morphological grounds , Ossiella seemingly forms a perfect intermediary link along the phylogenetic lineage between the eastern Australian genus Baldockia A. Millar, the eastern American genus Calliclavula G. W. Schneid, and the widespread Anotrichium Nägeli .  相似文献
