Earlé, R. A. 1981. Factors governing avian breeding in Acacia savanna, Pietermaritzburg, Part 3: Breeding success, recruitment and clutch size. Ostrich 52:235-243.

The clutch size and breeding success of eight species of birds were monitored over a two year period in Acacia savanna. The mean clutch size fluctuated within the breeding season and four patterns of clutch size variation were noted. A smaller proportion of large clutches were laid in the 1979 season when less food was available. Breeding success was higher in the dry 1979 season but fewer breeding attempts were made and the overall recruitment was thus lower. At the peak of the breeding season, in mid-November, breeding success was at its lowest. Predation on nests was the greatest factor reducing breeding success although rain and strong winds affected some species.  相似文献

Large mammal herbivores can have significant effects on the structure and composition of plant communities. We studied the impacts of an introduced giraffe population on Acacia species at Ithala Game Reserve in South Africa. Browse intensity and Acacia mortality were assessed in field transects, and in road transects covering the reserve road network. Several Acacia species occurring in high‐density giraffe areas had high levels of mortality. Populations of Acacia davyi were extinct in areas accessible to giraffe. Most A. caffra trees within giraffe browse height were dead and A. karroo, the most common species, was also heavily affected. Some species, including A. tortilis, showed no or very low mortality attributable to giraffe browsing. Healthy populations of sensitive species occurred in areas within, and adjacent to, the reserve in areas with low or no giraffe browsing. Areas too steep for giraffe access formed spatial refuges for these trees. The differential mortality that is occurring as a consequence of giraffe browsing is altering species composition and species distribution in this savanna landscape.  相似文献

Summary The foraging pattern of four sympatric fungus-growing termite species was followed for five months of the dry season in a semi-arid savanna (Senegal). Experimental plots were established with and without termites (exclusion with insecticide) and amended with different litter quality: Acacia leaves, millet canes, ground millet (<500 µm), Combretum wood and cattle manure. Results showed different foraging patterns between the fungus-growing species. Odontotermes nilensis, for example, rapidly developed its foraging activity on the litter. In contrast, Macrotermes subhyalinus delayed its foraging activity but, extensively collected the food after its discovery. Differences in food preference were evident between the termite species: Odonto-termes nilensis foraged preferentially on millet, canes and Acacia leaves, Macrotermes subhyalinus preferred cane and ground millet. Ancistrotermes guineensis selected the millet, and Microtermes sp. was mostly recorded foraging on pieces of dead wood. Relationships between different foraging parameters were established to assess the relative intensity of this activity over the dry season. The comparison between untreated plots and plots treated with Fipronil® (Aventis) clearly demonstrated that the exclusion of termites from part of the savanna is possible and that this possibility can be used to study their role on the soil and organic matter cycle in situ.  相似文献

With biomass densities comparable to large ungulates and megaherbivores, termites play a key functional role in many tropical savanna ecosystems. This study focuses on vegetated termite mounds (termitaria) constructed by the Termitidae species Macrotermes herus. We studied how resource rich termitaria affect graminoid herbs (Poaceae and Cyperaceae), forbs and woody species composition and diversity. The density of termitaria explained 89% of the variation in dense thickets in the area. Fire tolerant Acacia species dominated the open savanna while fire sensitive species like Grewia spp. and the succulent Euphorbia candelabrum were restricted to termite mounds. Termitaria plots had four times the mean number of woody species and supported three times as many forb species as the adjacent savanna. For woody species, both the Shannon–Wiener index and the Shannon evenness index were higher on temitaria than on the savanna. There were no differences for graminoid herbs, except for the Shannon evenness index which was higher on termitaria. Our results indicate that graminoid herb richness peaks at lower productivity levels than trees and forbs in savanna ecosystems, as also recently found in temperate areas.  相似文献

Summary Cellulose toilet roll baits were exposed in three different subhabitats at Nylsvley Reserve, northern Transvaal, and respective attacks by up to eight species of termites are described and illustrated. In broad-leaved savanna attack was principally by Microcerotermes, a slow feeder that attacked rolls throughout the year, finding about half the rolls exposed each season. In Acacia savanna attack was largely by Microtermes, a fast feeder active only at wetter times of year. In open, grassy areas there was relatively little attack, except sporadically by Macrotermes which consumed whole rolls within a day or two. Bush-fires delayed initial attack on rolls, perhaps because reduced surface litter gave less protection to soil. The amount of each roll eaten during the trials is shown in histograms; it was consistently greater in Acacia than in broad-leaved savanna. The soil-feeding termites Aganotermes and Promirotermes were attracted during the wet season to the undersides of rolls, perhaps as a source of organic-rich soil (or possibly of water).  相似文献

Population density and community structure of birds was studied at three sites in broadleaved (combretaceous) woodland in the lowveld of Swaziland. Birds were surveyed monthly using a standard point count technique. A total of 94 species of birds was recorded. Species richness at the three sites ranged between 57 and 73 species. Population density was similar at the three sites and ranged from 11.8 to 13.9 birds/ha. Biomass of birds was also similar at the three sites. Resident birds only accounted for 49% of all species, but made up 85% of the individuals and 82% of the biomass. There was a relatively large number of vagrant species, but they only accounted for 10% of the individuals and 14% of the biomass. Species richness of intra-African and Palaearctic migrants was low, and they contributed little to the bird density or biomass. In terms of diet, most birds were insectivorous, with mixed diet and granivorous species contributing approximately equally to biomass. Frugivorous species and raptors contributed little. The avifauna of broadleaved woodland in Swaziland is compared with that of other broadleaved woodlands in southern Africa and with that of Acacia savanna in Swaziland. Broadleaved woodland in Swaziland appears to support an avifauna which is depauperate compared to that of Acacia savanna, but not distinct from it.  相似文献

In an East African savanna herbaceous layer productivity and species composition were studied around Acacia tortilis trees of three different age classes, as well as around dead trees and in open grassland patches. The effects of trees on nutrient, light and water availability were measured to obtain an insight into which resources determine changes in productivity and composition of the herbaceous layer. Soil nutrient availability increased with tree age and size and was lowest in open grassland and highest under dead trees. The lower N:P ratios of grasses from open grassland compared to grasses from under trees suggested that productivity in open grassland was limited by nitrogen, while under trees the limiting nutrient was probably P. N:P ratios of grasses growing under bushes and small trees were intermediate between large trees and open grassland indicating that the understorey of Acacia trees seemed to change gradually from a N-limited to a P-limited vegetation. Soil moisture contents were lower under than those outside of canopies of large Acacia trees suggesting that water competition between trees and grasses was important. Species composition of the herbaceous layer under Acacia trees was completely different from the vegetation in open grassland. Also the vegetation under bushes of Acacia tortilis was different from both open grassland and the understorey of large trees. The main factor causing differences in species composition was probably nutrient availability because species compositions were similar for stands of similar soil nutrient concentrations even when light and water availability was different. Changes in species composition did not result in differences in above-ground biomass, which was remarkably similar under different sized trees and in open grassland. The only exception was around dead trees where herbaceous plant production was 60% higher than under living trees. The results suggest that herbaceous layer productivity did not increase under trees by a higher soil nutrient availability, probably because grass production was limited by competition for water. This was consistent with the high plant production around dead trees because when trees die, water competition disappears but the high soil nutrient availability remains. Hence, in addition to tree soil nutrient enrichment, below-ground competition for water appears to be an important process regulating tree-grass interactions in semi-arid savanna.  相似文献

Abstract. Question: Bush encroachment (i.e. an increase in density of woody plants often unpalatable to domestic livestock) is a serious problem in many savannas and threatens the livelihood of many pastoralists. Can we derive a better understanding of the factors causing bush encroachment by investigating the scale dependency of patterns and processes in savannas? Location: An arid savanna in the Khomas Hochland, Namibia. Methods: Patterns of bush, grass, and soil nutrient distribution were surveyed on several scales along a rainfall gradient, with emphasis on intraspecific interactions within the dominant woody species, Acacia reficiens. Results: Savannas can be interpreted as patch‐dynamic systems where landscapes are composed of many patches (a few ha in size) in different states of transition between grassy and woody dominance. Conclusions: In arid savannas, this patchiness is driven both by rainfall that is highly variable in space and time and by inter‐tree competition. Within the paradigm of patch‐dynamic savannas, bush encroachment is part of a cyclical succession between open savanna and woody dominance. The conversion from a patch of open savanna to a bush‐encroached area is initiated by the spatial and temporal overlap of several (localized) rainfall events sufficient for Acacia germination and establishment. With time, growth and self‐thinning will transform the bush‐encroached area into a mature Acacia stand and eventually into open savanna again. Patchiness is sustained due to the local rarity (and patchiness) of rainfall sufficient for germination of woody plants as well as by plant‐soil interactions.  相似文献

Availabilities of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) have a strong influence on plant growth and the species composition of savannas, but it is not clear how these availabilities depend on factors such as fire, N2-fixation, and activities of wild herbivores and cattle. We quantified soil N and P availabilities in various ways (extractable pools, mineralization, resin adsorption) along vegetation gradients within a recently abandoned cattle ranch and a former game reserve in Tanzania (both areas now part of the Saadani National Park). We also assessed annual N and P balances to evaluate how long-term availabilities of N and P are affected by large herbivores, symbiotic N2-fixation, and fire. The results show that cattle ranching led to a spatial re-distribution of nutrients, with the local accumulation of P being stronger and more persistent than that of N. In the former game reserve, intensively grazed patches of short grass tended to have elevated soil N and P availabilities; however, because quantities of nutrients removed through grazing exceeded returns in dung and urine, the nutrient balances of these patches were negative. In dense Acacia stands, N2-fixation increased N availability and caused a net annual N input. Fire was the major cause for nutrient losses from tallgrass savanna, and estimated N inputs from the atmosphere and symbiotic N2-fixation were insufficient to compensate for these losses. Our results call into question the common assumption that N budgets in annually burned savanna are balanced; rather, these ecosystems are a mosaic of patches with both N enrichment and impoverishment, which vary according to the vegetation type.  相似文献

The ultimate explanations for avian brood parasitism have been studied intensively as a model system for coevolution, but little is known about the proximate mechanisms, for example hormonal regulation, underlying brood parasitic behaviour. In this study, we explored seasonal hormone profiles in two brood parasitic Cuculus species breeding in the Republic of Korea. As brood parasites have relatively simple breeding stages without incubation and provisioning, we predicted that during the breeding season individuals would exhibit similar levels of testosterone (T) and stress‐induced corticosterone (CORT), hormones that are known to be closely related to the transition of breeding stages. We also assessed how these hormone profiles were associated with traits such as body size and sex. Overall, male cuckoos showed similarly high T levels throughout the breeding season, as predicted, but individual variation became greater as the season progressed. Individual CORT levels tended to decrease as the season progressed, although the decrease was significant only in Common Cuckoos Cuculus canorus. We also found that male Lesser Cuckoos Cuculus poliocephalus showed a much higher level of T than females, as expected, but this sexual difference was not observed in Common Cuckoos. Our results suggest that the seasonal hormone profiles of avian brood parasites are likely to be similar to typical hormone profiles expected for non‐brood parasites during the breeding season. This may suggest that not only the breeding cycle but also other factors such as social interaction may be affected by hormonal changes. Further studies are needed to fully understand the proximate mechanism of avian brood parasitism.  相似文献

Five sets of herbivore exclosures situated in mesic and semi‐arid savannas in Hluhluwe‐iMfolozi Park, South Africa were used to investigate the effects of mammal browsers and savanna type on plant traits relating to leaf nutrient content, defense, and growth in seven Acacia species. Mostly, browsing did not significantly affect leaf nutrient content but for a few species (i.e., increasing foliar N and P, decreasing C/N, and total polyphenols). Browser effects on structural defenses tended to be more pronounced than for leaf nutrient content and chemical defenses, particularly for semi‐arid species, resulting in longer, thicker, and denser spines, and a lower bite size index on browsed plants for most semi‐arid species. Browsing had no significant effect on growth rates for all species. Secondly, we investigated the effect of savanna type (mesic vs. semi‐arid) on the same set of plant traits and growth rates. A trade‐off in defense strategy was evident where mesic species had lower quality leaves and invested more heavily in growth and chemical defenses, while semi‐arid species generally had higher nutrient content leaves and invested more in structural defenses and higher levels of ramification. These findings suggest that the previously documented trade‐off in plant growth, resprouting ability and architecture between herbivore versus fire‐adapted savanna woody species can possibly be extended to include browse quality and defense type.  相似文献

Morphological and RAPD markers were used to assess the relationships among nodulating and non-nodulating species of AfricanAcacia. Non-nodulating species of AfricanAcacia are only found within subg.Aculeiferum sect.Monacanthea. African species of sect.Monacanthea examined were found to form a group distinct from the other African species examined on a morphological and molecular basis. All lack the ability to nodulate, suggesting that non-nodulation may be used as a taxonomic tool. The species of sect.Aculeiferum were separated by RAPD and morphological analysis into two groups depending on whether they were armed with prickles in pairs and/or prickles in threes, or solitary. A third group of species was identified within sect.Acacia: further subdivision of this group was achieved into subsectt.Pluriseriae andUniseriae. The position ofA. albida relative to other AfricanAcacia species was found to be distinct but not totally independent of the genus. The partitioning and distribution of the genetic variability within the genus is further elucidated by the RAPD analysis of populations ofAcacia species. A population analysis ofA. polyacantha demonstrated geographical and site-specific variation.  相似文献

Naturalization of Schinus molle (Anacardiaceae) has been observed in semi arid savanna of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. However, with high dispersal ability, the species is expected to achieve greater densities and invade more widely. The study involved a field manipulation experiment over 14 months using a factorial block design to examine transplanted seedlings in different savanna environments. The experiments examine the effects of soil type (sandy and clay), microsite, and herbivores on seedling performance (establishment, growth and survival). Seedlings were grown in a greenhouse and individually transplanted into four treatment groups: in open grassland, under tree canopies, and with and without cages to exclude large herbivores (cattle and game). The same experiment was repeated in two different soil types: coarse sand and fine-textured clay soil. Results suggest that protection provided by canopies of large indigenous Acacia trees facilitates S. molle invasion into semi-arid savanna. In the field, S. molle seedlings performed considerably better beneath canopies of indigenous Acacia trees than in open areas regardless of soil type. Whether exposed or protected from large herbivores, no seedlings planted in open grassland survived the first winter. Although, seedlings grew better and had higher survival rates beneath tree canopies than in the open sites, exposure to large herbivores significantly decreased heights and canopy areas of seedlings compared with those protected from large herbivores. The effect was greater on clay soil than on sandy soil. The results suggest that low temperature (frost), and possibly inter-specific competition with grasses, may limit S. molle seedling establishment, survival and growth away from tree canopies in semi arid savannas. Low soil nutrient status and browsing may also delay growth and development of this species. The invasive potential of S. molle is thus greatest on fertile soils where sub-canopy microsites are present and browsing mammals are absent.  相似文献

Patterns of vocal activity may involve information about vocalizations themselves as well as their function. In birds, vocal activity at the individual and population level is generally closely associated with breeding cycles, reaching the peak during territorial and mating competition, and decreasing with the onset of egg incubation and chick feeding. However, little is known about patterns of vocal activity in avian brood parasites that have unusual breeding cycles without parental care. Using passive acoustic monitoring, we determined the seasonal and diurnal patterns of population vocal activity in two avian brood parasites: the Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus and the Lesser Cuckoo C. poliocephalus. We found that both species and both sexes showed a similarly highly structured pattern of seasonal vocal activity, reaching a sharp peak in the early breeding season when birds compete for territories and mates, although males sang more frequently than females. Likewise, the diurnal patterns of vocal activity were similar in both species and both sexes of cuckoos, with peak activity occurring around dawn. Nocturnal calls by male cuckoos were also detected in both species, but only in the early breeding season. Collectively, the observed patterns of population vocal activity may suggest that the absence of parental care may not extend the period of vocal activity in these two species of brood parasites.  相似文献

The overabundance of Yellow‐throated Miner (Manorina flavigula) has been shown to negatively affect the abundance and richness of small birds in areas they occupy, leading to homogenization of the avifauna across the fragmented landscape. In this study, we took advantage of a planned management cull to ask the question, does the removal of Yellow‐throated Miner colonies cause an immediate change in avian species richness and abundance? This cull was undertaken around the Bronzewing Flora and Fauna Reserve (north‐western Victoria, Australia) in order to protect a resident population of endangered Black‐eared Miner (M. melanotis) from hybridization. We conducted avian surveys along roadsides surrounding the reserve at Yellow‐throated Miner colonies (= 6), control sites with no miners (= 7), and where colonies were removed (= 3). We found that the cull was followed by only a very modest increase in the species richness and abundance of small birds, with no significant effects on avian assemblage overall. This result contrasts with far more dramatic increases following culls of other species of miner. Sites where miners were removed were not depauperate of other species prior to the cull, which could have been due to a combination of proximity to refuge for small birds in a neighbouring reserve or the low numbers of miners that made up each culled colony. This study highlights that assumed effects of a management action may be highly dependent upon spatial and temporal context.  相似文献

Australian species of the genus Acacia are amongst the most invasive trees. As nitrogen fixers, they are able to invade oligotrophic ecosystems and alter ecosystem functioning to their benefit. We aimed to answer three questions: How does early Acacia invasion influence nitrogen and light in a sandy savanna? How does early Acacia invasion impact biodiversity? Does early invasion alter ecosystem functioning towards the dominance of Acacia? We analyzed (using generalized linear mixed models and richness estimators) paired plots focused on plants of Acacia mangium (Fabaceae) and plants of Marcetia taxifolia (Melastomataceae) by taking hemispherical photos and sampling plants, leaves and soil for measurements of light, richness, leaf nitrogen, leaf δ15N, soil nitrogen and soil coarse sand. The results suggest that early Acacia invasion alters the control of soil and of leaf nitrogen and increases shading, enabling a much wider range of light variation. The δ15N results suggest that the nitrogen taken up by Acacia is transferred to neighboring plants and influences the light environment, suggesting facilitation. The enrichment of plant species observed during early Acacia invasion is consistent with the wider range of light variation, but the forecasted leaf nitrogen conditions during the established phase of Acacia invasion might cause loss of light-demanding species because of increased shading. If early Acacia invasion turns into an established phase with highly increased shading, Acacia seedlings might be favored and ecosystem functioning might change towards its dominance.  相似文献

The history of isolated patches of monsoon rainforest within large tracts of Eucalyptus savanna is poorly understood because of the scarcity of reliable palaeoecological records in the Australian monsoon tropics. Elsewhere in the world, the ratio of the stable isotopes 13C to 12C (δ13C) in soil organic matter has shed light on the dynamics of rainforest–savanna boundaries because tropical grasses with the C4 photosynthetic pathway have a distinct δ13C signature (–17 to –9‰) compared with that of woody plants with the C3 photosynthetic pathway (–32 to –22‰). In order to determine the magnitude of the variation in δ13C, unreplicated soil profiles were sampled beneath different vegetation types on three boundaries between Eucalyptus savanna and rainforest that were both growing on Tertiary age laterite parent material. Replicated (n = 3) soil profiles, which were also derived from Tertiary age laterite, were sampled from beneath: (i) dense stands of African grasses within a frequently burnt Eucalyptus savanna; and within the same long unburnt Eucalyptus savanna, (ii) patches of African and natives grasses and (iii) clumps of Acacia trees. The strongly negative δ13C values of soil organic matter derived from the frequently burnt and long unburnt grassy understoreys in the Eucalyptus savannas showed that a considerable amount of the soil carbon was derived from C3 (woody) species despite the presence of a ground layer dominated by C4 grasses. However, a feature of these data was the considerable variability among the three ‘replicate’ profiles. The surface soil samples from beneath three clumps of Acacia trees in the unburnt Eucalyptus savanna had much less variable δ13C values and were similar to two of the three monsoon rainforests sampled. The pattern of δ13C values from unreplicated soil profiles from different vegetation types across three rainforest boundaries was also very variable and not always obviously related the known disturbance history of the extant vegetation. Given the considerable variability within and between vegetation types with contrasting disturbance histories, it is concluded that the use of carbon stable isotopes to advance understanding of the dynamics of rainforest and Eucalyptus savanna boundaries will require further development, such as determination of the 14C age and δ13C values of different soil carbon fractions.  相似文献

Bell miners (Manorina melanophrys; Meliphagidae) are a highly social and very aggressive honeyeater. They are despotic and cooperate in the defence of their territories against other bird species, leading to the almost complete exclusion of other avifauna from miner‐occupied regions. This study aimed to resolve some of the fine‐scale effects of bell miner aggression on avian diversity both within and adjacent to colonies to determine the true impact of a colony on local avifaunal abundance. Three areas, distributed throughout the range of the bell miner, were surveyed across both non‐breeding and breeding seasons to assess the temporal and spatial impacts of bell miner aggression on other bird species. Bell miner colonies were found to occupy very clearly defined areas and had the expected negative impact on avian diversity within their colony. The effects of bell miner colony presence on abundance and richness of avian species were found to cease at the colony boundary, with both recovering to normal levels immediately outside the bell miner colony. Whether bell miners were breeding or not, and irrespective of the amount of vegetation coverage, bell miner colonies were found to have relatively marginal impacts on avian richness and abundance. No impact of colony presence/absence was found on the richness or abundance of the avian species that dwell in the undergrowth, with some evidence that these species were actually more common at the colony edge. Our results demonstrate that the influence of bell miner colony presence upon avian biodiversity is restricted to the confines of the colony and does not radiate outwards into the surrounding habitat. Colony presence influences, therefore, have implications when considering the impact of bell miner behaviour on the diversity of insectivorous birds and processes, most notably the propagation of Bell Miner Associated Dieback.  相似文献

Breeding season is the most energetically and physiologically demanding phase in the avian annual cycle, challenging adults' physiology and survival. However, the timing and extent that self‐maintenance of breeding adults is compromised during the breeding season is poorly understood. We investigated the trade‐off between reproduction and self‐maintenance in relation to breeding phase (prelaying, incubation, chick rearing) and sex in a small Arctic seabird, the little auk Alle alle. To measure a bird's allocation of time for self‐maintenance, we examined size‐adjusted body mass and immunocompetence expressed by bacteria (Escherichia coli) killing capacity (BKC) of blood plasma, heterophils/lymphocyte ratio (H/L) and their numbers of particular leucocytes per 10 000 red blood cells (RBC). We found that size‐adjusted body mass decreased as the breeding season progressed. BKC, number of heterophils and H/L values were all was significantly higher at prelaying when compared to all other phases. Interestingly, we found that heavier individuals had higher BKC and number heterophils at the prelaying and chick rearing phases than light individuals. There were no differences by sex in any studied variables. Our results indicate that immunocompetence and body mass of breeding adults decreases over the course of breeding season. The efficiency of the immune system appears to be dependent on the bird's body reserves. Our results suggest that little auks allocation of resources into reproduction negatively affects their self‐maintenance.  相似文献

Acacia species in arid environments are thought to only establish in years of above-average rainfall, so should exhibit cohorted or pulsed recruitment. I studied population demography of Acacia erioloba Meyer in semi-arid savanna in the Kimberley area (mean annual precipitation = 425 ± 132 mm), South Africa, to establish whether they recruit episodically. This species was found to have a sapling bank at the sites, indicating that even though cohorted recruitment probably occurs, it is not the primary factor limiting recruitment to larger size classes. A. erioloba saplings given supplementary water and protection from herbivory showed significantly less height growth than saplings given water but not protected from herbivores, and grass within exclusion plots was taller and denser than outside of exclusion plots. The generalized linear model, although finding a significant difference between watered and protected and watered and unprotected saplings, explained only 16% of variation in growth, demonstrating the importance of factors other than competition from grass when rainfall is above-average. Average height increase across all treatments for a growing season was small (43.1 ± 30.81 mm), suggesting most investment is belowground. A. erioloba sapling below surface stem diameter correlated positively with aboveground growth, indicating larger, and presumably older, individuals grow faster. When grass was removed around saplings, growth rates were not significantly greater than for saplings surrounded by grass, over a growing season. Thus, in these study sites, pulsed events allow seedlings to establish, and then saplings slowly accumulate over many growing seasons within the grass sward, owing to slow aboveground growth combined with competition from grass in absence of grazers. Release events, e.g., heavy grazing combined with good rainfall, may allow mass release, giving the impression of cohorted or pulsed recruitment.  相似文献
