Elliot, C: C. H., Waltner, M., Underhill. L. G., Pringle, J. S. & Dick, W. J. A. 1976. The migration system of the Curlew Sandpiper Calidris ferruginea in Africa. Ostrich 47:191-213. Data on ringing and recoveries of Curlew Sandpiper, mainly from the Cape, South Africa are presented. Possible migration routes to the breeding grounds are considered in the light of these and other recoveries from the rest of Africa. Retraps show that the species exhibits ortstreue and some evidence is presented which suggests that some birds may travel together and stay in the south in the same flock during one and subsequent migrations. Sex ratio statistics show an excess of females. Adults complete a full primary moult in the Cape between September and February, taking about 140 days but there is a lot of individual variation. Data from Mauritania show primary moult starting faster, a month earlier than in the Cape, and arrested moult in a few adults. The difference may be because Mauritanian birds move on further south while the Cape is the end point of the migration. Kenyan moult records from the Rift Valley follow the Cape pattern except that some birds arrest moult and finish later. Juvenile moult is shown to be different from that of adults, involving only a moult of the outer primaries and taking place during the overwintering period, April to August. All juveniles in the Cape are thought to overwinter and the modified moult to be an adaptation to this behaviour. The weight of adults but not juveniles increases markedly in the six weeks before migration. Fat and protein analyses suggest that the increase is entirely due to deposition of migratory fat. Kenyan birds have lower mean weights and deposit fat about two weeks later than those at the Cape. The nearer the non-breeding quarters are to the breeding grounds, the earlier moult starts and the later fat deposition takes place.  相似文献

Data are presented on breeding success of Red Bishops (Euplectes orix) collected over four breeding seasons at a colony in the Addo Elephant National Park, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Overall hatching and fledging success were 53.8% and 26.0% of all eggs laid, respectively, and the overall mean number of fledglings per breeding attempt was 0.77. Hatching and fledging success varied significantly among seasons, with both clutch and brood losses due to predation being the main reason for the observed differences. Hatching success also differed significantly among clutch sizes, being highest for four-egg clutches (63.2%), intermediate for three-egg clutches (55.5%) and lowest for two-egg clutches and five-egg clutches (33.2% and 34.3%, respectively). However, fledging success was not significantly different among clutch sizes. The mean number of fledglings per breeding attempt was 0.44 for two-egg clutches, 0.80 for three-egg clutches, 1.10 for four-egg clutches, and 0.57 for five-egg clutches. The height of accepted nests (i.e.nests in which at least one egg was laid) was significantly lower than the height of nests not accepted. In addition, accepted nests in which eggs hatched and young fledged were significantly lower than accepted nests in which no eggs hatched and no young fledged. These overall effects of nest height on nest acceptance and hatching and fledging success were, however, due only to nests built above water, since no such effects were found when nests built above ground (i.e.on dry land) were analysed separately. I detected no effect of nest coverage on the probability of a nest being accepted, nor was there any effect of nest coverage on hatching or fledging success. Nests above water were significantly more likely to be accepted than nests above ground; however, hatching and fledging success of nests that were accepted did not differ significantly between nests built above water and those built above ground.  相似文献

A total of 346 prey items, collected from nine Martial Eagle Polemaetus bellicosus nests in the Cape Province, was analyzed. The importance of e.g. Leporidae and Viverridae in the prey spectrum is emphasized. Young domestic small-stock appear to stand at least as much chance of predation by large eagles as does the natural prey of these birds. Nevertheless stock predation by territorial, mated Martial Eagles was only 8% in this study, with some, at least, probably taken as carrion. The validity of the analysis of prey remains collected from or below eagle nests is discussed.  相似文献

Hartlaub's Larus hartlaubii and Kelp Gulls L. dominicanus in the southwestern Cape feed on a wide range of prey species. On average, Kelp Gulls feed on larger-sized prey than do the smaller Hartlaub's Gulls. In an undisturbed environment the preferred foraging habitats of Hartlaub's and Kelp Gulls are rocky shores and open, sandy beaches (where sand mussels Donax serra are common) respectively. However, as a result of man's activities, several new foraging habitats have become available including croplands, fishing harbours and refuse dumps. The provision of supplementary food at these new foraging habitats is likely to be the cause of a recent population increase. Kelp Gull chicks are fed predominantly “natural” prey which indicates that the population increase may not be due to enhanced reproductive success, but to improved post-fledging survival of juveniles, which are known to aggregate at sites where supplementary food is provided.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of waterbirds at the Berg River estuary were studied between September 1987 and April 1989. The estuary supports an unusually high density of waterbirds, especially of Pale-arctic migrant waders, and is a site of subregional importance for at least nine species. Intertidal mudflats are the favoured feeding habitat of the majority of species on the estuary during the low tide period. Low tide feeding densities on saltmarshes are mud less than on mudflats, but saltmarshes are important as roost sites, high tide feeding sites, and in counteracting the negative hydrological consequences of development. The current conservation status of the estuary is not commensurate with its importance as a waterbird habitat and, given the current threats facing the estuary, enhanced protection at the national level is considered a greater priority than registration with, for example, the RAMSAR Convention.  相似文献

Before inundation in September 1976 Barbus holubi and Labeo capensis were the dominant species each making up 46% of the total catch. Immediately after impoundment the relative density of B. holubi increased to 75% while that of L. capensis dropped to 18%. With minor changes the relative densities remained roughly constant until April 1978 when the turbidity of the dam increased. After this date the relative density of B. holubi rapidly declined, probably due to environmental changes, while that of L. capensis increased due to post-impoundment recruitment. The catches of other species remained low. Changes in catch per unit effort, which were determined from April 1978 onwards substantiate these findings.  相似文献

Summary

The hydrological and habitat value of wetlands is beginning to be recognised in South Africa, but only in parts of Natal Province has an effort been made to map wetlands and to record their status over large areas. While the most accurate method of mapping wetlands is a combination of photogrammetry and field surveys, this is time-consuming and expensive. An alternative “desktop” method was therefore used to draw up a preliminary distribution of wetlands in the south-western Cape Province, and this approach consisted of summarising the information contained on 1:50 000 topographical survey maps. The summary shows that shallow, vegetated wetlands (vleis) occur mainly in the wetter south and south-west of the region, while the non-perennial wetlands (pans) predominate inland, where the land is dryer and flatter. There are many estuarine wetlands along the coast, resulting from the tendency of river mouths to be blocked by sand-bars. Farming requirements and suitable topography account for the many small artificial wetlands (farm dams) in the central southern parts. Farm dams predominate in the region (15067 were counted), followed by pans (1741), riverine wetlands (261), vleis (216) and estuarine wetlands (15).  相似文献

During July-December 1992, the diet, home range, hunting and reproductive behaviour of a pair of Dickinson's Kestrel Falco dickinsoni was recorded in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Numerically, for both sexes combined, invertebrates formed the majority (56%) of the diet, while separately the female caught 75% and the male 49% invertebrate prey. During courtship and incubation the male supplied the female with primarily vertebrate prey and both provisioned mainly vertebrates to the nestlings (male = 80%; female = 57%). The non-breeding home range of the female was 27.8 km2, and the breeding home range of the male was 26.3 km2. Both utilised their home ranges differentially, the area within a 2 km radius of the nest (12.6 km2) being used proportionally more than the remaining area. The home range of the female was compared to that of other Falco spp. and was larger than would be expected based on body weight. Perch-hunting was the only technique utilised by both sexes, with 79–80% of observed strike attempts from dead trees. During the day, the 9.emale spent 87% and the male 77% of the time perch-hunting, with respective hunting success rates of 69% and 58%. During courtship, the female spent much of her time (94%) close to the nest, where the male supplied her with prey. During incubation, the male spent 95% of his time within 2 km of the nest tree, where he hunted to supply the female with prey at a rate of 0.3 items.hr?1 and assisted in nest defence. On occasion the male entered the nest to relieve the female, and remained in the cavity on average for 134 min (n = 5). As the young got older, the female spent less time at the nest and provisioned more items to the nestlings. Overall, there was an increase in the rate of prey provisioning to the nestlings from 0.45 items.hr?1 (10 days old) to 0.85 items.hr?1 (21 days old). Eggs from wild Zimbabwean Ostriches Struthio camelus australis and domesticated South African hybrid birds, were compared. Formulae were tested to determine their accuracy when used to calculate egg weights, surface area and density. Calculated values were compared with some actual measurements. The main motivation for the study was the need to calculate fresh egg weights of wild Ostriches, as an aid to determining weight loss during incubation under natural conditions. Eggs from wild birds were, on average, smaller than those from domesticated birds, even though the wild adults were larger than domesticated birds. However, newly batched chicks from hybrid eggs weighed less than those from wild eggs.  相似文献

Laughing Doves Streptopelia senegalensis were collected each month from July 1976 to to June 1977. The diet was found to be mainly seeds of commercial crops (sunflower and make) during most of the year. One species of grass, Eleusine indica, occurred in 100% of stomachs, but often was present only in small amounts. Summary

An unusually cold spell during the winter of 1987 caused a drop in water temperature at Lake St Lucia. This coupled with typical estuarine salinities in the lake resulted in a fish kill. The kill was one of the largest recorded in a South African estuarine environment and involved an estimated 250,000 fish comprising at least 21 species. Most fish that died belonged to small species. Densities of dead fish recorded along the lake's shoreline ranged from 0.1 to 16.6 fish per metre. It is concluded that the combination of low water temperature and near marine salinities was the major cause of the 1987 fish kill at Lake St Lucia.  相似文献

A case is made out for grouping the various forms of clapper lark in southern Africa, other than those included in the species Mirafra rufocinnumomea (olim fischeri ), as a single polytypic species, Mirafra apiata Vieillot. Many of the described forms are listed as geographical races.
