Periphytic diatom communities’ colonization patterns were studied at three sampling stations of the Red–Nhue–Tolich hydrosystem presenting different urban pollution levels by using artificial substrates for 6 weeks in dry season 2005. Structural characteristics of periphytic diatoms developed on glass substrates at each sampling site were followed and compared. This experiment showed, through various general criteria (total diatom density, dry weight biomass) and specific criteria (relative diatom abundances, indices) that the structure of benthic diatoms developed on these substrates was strongly affected by pollution as early as the second week of colonization. Communities exposed to heavily and moderately polluted sites contained species which are known to be saprophilous or tolerant to organic pollution such as Nitzschia umbonata, Nitzschia palea, Cyclotella meneghiniana, Eolimna minima. Growth inhibition of diatom communities at the heavily polluted site was mostly related to a strong increase of organic load rather than to low metallic input, though metallic (Cd and Zn) burdens have been successfully quantified in the biofilms developed at the three studied sites. Nevertheless, no significant difference in species richness and diversity index between colonization duration times was observed. Based on values of diatom indices Indice de Polluosensibilité (IPS) and diatom assemblage index to organic water pollution (DAIPo), water quality could be classified as medium quality at Red site, polluted at NT2 and heavily polluted at TL. Thus, the use of diatoms as a tool for water assessment appears suitable for monitoring rivers in Vietnam, as it is in several other countries.  相似文献

The effects of urban pollution from Hanoi city on the benthic diatom communities of the Nhue–Tolich river system were studied during the 2003 dry season. Benthic diatoms were allowed to grow on glass slides suspended in the water flow for 4 weeks. To reveal the relationship between water quality and diatom communities, Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used on data concerning relative abundances of diatom species and environmental variables. Two diatom indices, IPS and DAIpo, were applied to evaluate water quality in the three rivers. A total of 291 diatom taxa were found in the Red, Nhue and Tolich Rivers. These were mainly cosmopolitan taxa, with some tropical, subtropical and endemic taxa. The most abundant taxa at the Red site were Aulacoseira granulata, Achnanthidium minutissimum, Encyonema minutum, Navicula recens and other halophilous taxa such as Nitzschia kurzii, Seminavis strigosa, Entomoneis paludosa, Bacillaria paradoxa. Diatom assemblages at the Tolich site consisted mainly of Nitzschia umbonata, Nitzschia palea and Eolimna minima. Diatom density ranged from 660 to 30,000 cells/cm2. Environmental variables and diatom assemblage composition at all sites were significantly correlated. Two diatom indices gave similar results and indicate the Tolich River with the lowest values as a highly polluted site.  相似文献

A study on biological assessment of water pollution using diatom community structure and species distribution was carried out in the Linggi River Basin, Malaysia which was polluted by various urban, industrial and agricultural wastes. A total of 86 diatom taxa belonging to 21 genera were recorded from all eight sampling stations located in the basin, of which 70 species were found on artificial substrates; the remaining 16 species were recorded exclusively on natural substrates. The number of diatom species observed between the stations varied from 22-47 species. The dominant diatom species in decreasing order of abundance were Eunotia vanheurckii, Nitzschia palea, Achnanthes saxonica, Gomphonema parvulum and Achnanthes minutissima. The most common clean water species were Achnanthes minutissima, A. linearis and Synedra rumpens. The most tolerant species were Nitzschia palea followed by Gomphonema parvulum and Pinnularia braunii. Eunotia vanheurckii and Navicula cryptocephala occurred in high densities at both unpolluted and polluted stations and can be considered as the common facultative or indifferent species. Although a large number of species were recorded at the unpolluted stations, equivalent number of species were also found at the moderately polluted stations. However, the number of species was reduced at grossly polluted stations. Nevertheless, a marked variation in species association exists between the unpolluted and polluted stations, but not among the polluted stations to distinguish the type and degree of pollution.  相似文献

Although benthic diatoms are used to assess river water quality, there are few data on the rate at which diatom assemblages react to changes in water quality. The aim of this study was to assess the reaction time of diatoms and to discuss the changes occurring during water quality improvement on the basis of their autecological characteristics. In order to simulate this improvement, diatom-dominated biofilms grown on artificial sandstone substrata were transferred from several polluted rivers to an unpolluted river. They were sampled three times: before transfer and 1 and 2 months after transfer. The ecology and growth-forms of the taxa explained most of the changes in species composition observed during the experiment. Adnate diatoms gradually replaced motile and stalked taxa. Gomphonema parvulum, a stalked diatom positioned vertically in the biofilm, is adapted for light and space competition in high-density algal biofilms. When transferred to an unpolluted site, this growth-form is less competitive and does not tolerate the high grazing pressure. Fistulifera saprophila is a single celled motile diatom, living in organic matrices. When the artificial substrata were transferred to the unpolluted site, this particular ecological niche disappeared quickly. On the other hand, Achnanthidium minutissimum, which is considered to be cosmopolitan and an early colonizer, increased during the first month of transfer and then decreased. It was gradually replaced by A. biasolettianum, which was the taxon best suited to this pristine stream. The changes observed differed between treatments depending on the species composition and architecture of the biofilms. In particular, biofilms dominated by stalked and motile diatoms were more quickly modified than those dominated by small motile diatoms. The diatom index reflects these changes, and its values showed that about 60 days following a water quality improvement were necessary for transferred diatom assemblages to reach diatom index values similar as those at the unpolluted river.  相似文献

Periphytic diatom communities were analyzed from several heavy metal contaminated water bodies of Haryana, India. Among the analyzed sites, site HO3 (Saraswati Dham, Kurukshetra, Pehowa) showed significant response in the periphytic diatom community in terms of community shift (dominance of Gomphonema pseudoaugur) and lower biodiversity indices (species richness and Shannon index). Gomphonema pseudoaugur responded more specifically through induction of lipid bodies and occurrence of deformities in diatom frustules. PCA analysis showed that site HO3 is contaminated with heavy metals, especially Pb and Se. Pearson's correlation analysis showed a positive and statistically strong relationship between induction of lipid bodies and deformities with heavy metals (Pb and Se). Finally, from the present study, we concluded that heavy metal stress induces increased lipid body (LBs) size and deformities in the diatom species Gomphonema pseudoaugur, which could be a valuable indicator species for biomonitoring and a consideration in biofuel production.  相似文献

The main objectives of this study were to determine the floristic composition of the vegetation cover and to find the effects of wastewater pollution on the plant community structure in eastern Saudi Arabia. 28 stands which were distributed among polluted and unpolluted sites, were chosen for this study. A total of 42 plant species were recorded (14 in the polluted and 28 in the unpolluted sites). The recorded plants comprised of 13 perennial plant species and 29 annual plant species. Seven vegetation communities were determined using TWINSPAN and DCA classification and ordination techniques. Three in the polluted sites, two in the unpolluted sites and the remaining two were mixed communities. The (Sarcopoterium spinosum – Pistacia len‐tiscus) community in the polluted sites, had the highest values of soil moisture, salinity, sulphate, calcium and potassium. On the other hand, Juniperus phoenicea – Olea europaea community in the unpolluted site, had the lowest value of organic matter, salinity and magnesium. In respect of genetic diversity, the community of Foeniculum vulgare - Nicotiana glauca in the unpolluted site, was the most diverse, while Ricinus communis - Chrysanthemum coronarium in the polluted sites was the least one. Both soil and wastewater heavy metal analysis indicated that Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu and Ni concentrations in the polluted sites were significantly higher than those in the unpolluted ones. The impact of wastewater discharge led to the appearance of new invasive plant species that may significantly affect plant diversity and community structure in eastern Saudi Arabia. Finally wastewater discharge in open rangelands could adversely affect the growth of plant species in the rangelands and thus adversely affect plant community structure and diversity.  相似文献

Although the ecological effects of surface wateracidification are now well researched, factorscontrolling the abundance and occurrence of aquaticorganisms in unpolluted acid-sensitive systems arepoorly known. The Høylandet region in central Norwayexperiences relatively low levels of atmosphericpollution and its surface waters, although acid, arenot significantly acidified. Hence lakes and streamsin this region were selected to study the influence ofwater chemistry on diatom algae. Relationships betweenthe two were explored using the multivariate techniqueof canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Theprincipal water chemistry variables influencingspecies composition of periphytic diatoms were foundto be pH and water colour. Furthermore, therelationship between species abundance and pH wassufficiently strong to enable reconstruction of wateracidity from diatom data. Establishing the nature ofaquatic communities in atmospherically clean butgeologically sensitive regions is an important meansof identifying control systems against which therecovery of acidified lakes in polluted regions can beassessed. The Høylandet region has the potential toprovide a Europe-wide control system of this naturebut much further work is required to follow up andextend the results of this preliminary study.  相似文献

Previous studies show that Masson pine (Pinus massoniana L.) stands grown at the industrially-polluted site have experienced unprecedented growth decline, but the causal mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, to understand the mechanisms of growth decline of Mason pine strands under pollution stresses, we determined the reactive oxygen species levels and chemical composition of the current-year (C) and one-year-old (C + 1) needles, and calculated the needle construction costs (CCmass) of Masson pine trees grown at an industrially-polluted site and an unpolluted remote site. Pine trees grown at the polluted site had significantly higher levels of hydroxyl radical and superoxide anion in their needles than those grown at the unpolluted site, and the former trees eventually exhibited needle early senescence. The contents of lipids, soluble phenolics and lignins in C and C + 1 needles were significantly higher at the polluted site than at the unpolluted site, but the total amounts of non-construction carbohydrates were lower in non-polluted needles than in polluted needles. Elevated levels of the reactive oxygen species and early senescence in polluted needles together led to significant increases in CCmass and a longer payback time. We infer that the lengthened payback time and needle early senescence under pollution stress may reduce the Masson pine tree growth and consequently accelerate tree decline.  相似文献

Monthly species diversity and other components of diversity of diatom samples collected over a period of one year at eight stations in the Linggi River Basin, Malaysia were analysed. Species diversity ranged between 0.52–3.62 bits individua–1. Among the four stations located in the Linggi River (sensu stricto), highest diversity values were recorded at a station polluted by rubber effluent, followed by the stations unpolluted from point sources. Lowest diversity was recorded at a station polluted with urban sewage. At Kundor River, highest diversity was recorded at stations located downstream of rubber and palm oil waste discharges. On the whole, diversity values at unpolluted stations were always lower than at mildly polluted stations. Severe organic loadings caused low diversity by reducing the number of species (species richness) but did not increase the evenness (equitability) as expected when compared with unpolluted or mildly polluted stations. The changes in species diversity can be related to changes in diatom community structure and thereby changes in water quality, but cannot be used as an index of water quality.  相似文献

Periphyton plays a vital ecological role in shallow, well-lit ecosystems which are vulnerable to rapidly changing environmental conditions, including raising temperature due to global warming. Nevertheless, little is known on the effect of increased temperatures on the taxonomic structure and functioning of periphytic communities. In this study, the influence of short-term temperature increase on the species composition and photosynthetic activity of the Baltic periphytic communities was investigated. The collected communities were exposed to increased temperature of 23 °C (ca. 4 °C above the summer average) for 72 h. After this time, species composition of the communities was studied under light microscope and their photosynthetic performance was evaluated using PAM fluorometry. Results showed that the biomass of cyanobacteria slightly increased. There were significant changes in the abundance of diatom species, among which Fragilaria fasciculata and Navicula ramosissima, were negatively affected by the elevated temperature and their cell number significantly decreased, whereas, Diatoma moniliformis and N. perminuta were stimulated by the increased temperature. Additionally, a shift towards higher abundance of smaller taxa was also observed. The higher quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) (higher ΦPSII) accompanied by the lower value of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) observed in communities kept at 23 °C showed more efficient photosynthesis. This was further confirmed by the changes in rapid light curves (higher photosynthetic capacity, rETRmax, and photoacclimation index, Ek). The obtained data constitute evidence that short periods of increased temperature significantly affect the structure and functioning of the Baltic periphyton.  相似文献

扎龙湿地位于黑龙江省西部、松嫩平原乌裕尔河下游,是我国北方同纬度地区最完整的湿地。于2012年春、夏、秋3季,对扎龙湿地6个代表性区域进行硅藻标本采集,经观察鉴定,发现硅藻植物140个分类单位,包括121种19变种,隶属于2纲6目9科30属。羽纹纲物种较丰富,占总种类数的95%。硅藻植物群落呈现明显的季节演替,秋季硅藻种类丰富度及相对丰度明显高于春、夏两季,优势种多以淡水、半咸水、喜弱碱的种类为主,优势种与水体的盐度和酸碱度存在一定的响应关系。应用典范对应分析(Canonical Correspondence Analysis,CCA)探讨硅藻植物群落变化与环境因子之间的关系。CCA结果显示在扎龙湿地中,水温、电导率、pH、溶解氧是影响硅藻群落结构变化的主要因素,此外总氮、总磷也是硅藻群落季节演替的重要驱动因子。结合硅藻植物多样性指数和硅藻商对扎龙湿地水质进行综合评价,结果显示扎龙湿地整体为中-寡污带水体,部分水域水质较清洁,少数样点受人为因素影响,呈轻污染。  相似文献

Adverse conditions in the acid mine drainage (AMD) system at the Green Valley mine, Indiana, limit diatom diversity to one species, Nitzschia tubicola. It is present in three distinct microbial consortia: Euglena mutabilis-dominated biofilm, diatomdominated biofilm, and diatom-exclusive biofilm. E. mutabilis dominates the most extensive biofilm, with lesser numbers of N. tubicola, other eukaryotes, and bacteria. Diatom-dominated biofilm occurs as isolated patches containing N. tubicola with minor fungal hyphae, filamentous algae, E. mutabilis, and bacteria. Diatom-exclusive biofilm is rare, composed entirely of N. tubicola.

Diatom distribution is influenced by seasonal and intraseasonal changes in water temperature and chemistry. Diatoms are absent in winter due to cool water temperatures. In summer, isolated patchy communities are present due to warmer water temperatures. In 2001, the diatom community expanded its distribution following a major rainfall that temporarily diluted the effluent, creating hospitable conditions for diatom growth. After several weeks when effluent returned to preexisting conditions, the diatom biofilm retreated to isolated patches, and E. mutabilis biofilm flourished.

Iron-rich stromatolites underlie the biofilms and consist of distinct laminae, recording spatial and temporal oscillations in physicochemical conditions and microbial activity. The stromatolites are composed of thin, wavy laminae with partially decayed E. mutabilis biofilm, representing microbial activity and iron precipitation under normal AMD conditions. Alternating with the wavy layers are thicker, porous, spongelike laminae composed of iron precipitated on and incorporated into radiating colonies of diatoms. These layers indicate episodic changes in water chemistry, allowing diatoms to temporarily dominate the system.  相似文献

1. The effect of phosphate on species composition in biofilms was studied under three different phosphate regimes (0.5, 5 and 50 μm ) in two different multi species communities: one composed of the four diatom species Melosira varians, Nitzschia perminuta, Navicula trivialis and Achnanthes lanceolata and one containing these diatom species plus the two cyanobacterial species Leptolyngbya foveolarum and Cylindrospermum stagnale. 2. Algal growth in monocultures and mixtures was measured as chlorophyll a and PAM fluorimetry was applied to document density and physiological condition of the two main groups of photosynthetic organisms in mixed cultures. 3. In phosphate‐replete communities, a single species dominated the community (N. perminuta in the diatom mixture and L. foveolarum in the all species mixture), while in the phosphate‐deprived communities several species persisted, in spite of severe phosphate limitation. 4. We conclude that high supply of phosphate enables the species L. foveolarum, and to a lesser extent N. perminuta, to overgrow biofilm consortia, facilitated by their filamentous growth form, motility or the excretion of inhibitors. The persistence of several species under a low phosphate regime is explained by a less intense interspecific interaction in low‐density biofilms. Diatoms, which are early autotrophic colonisers, are an important constituent of the biofouling community in the marine environment. The effects of substratum and temporal variations on the fouling diatom community structure in a monsoon-influenced tropical estuary were studied. Fibreglass and glass coupons were exposed every month for a period of 4 days and the diatom population sampled at 24 h intervals, over a period of 14 months. The planktonic diatom community structure differed from the biofilm community. Pennate diatoms dominated the biofilms whilst centric diatoms were dominant in the water column. Among the biofilm diatoms, species belonging to the genera Navicula, Amphora, Nitzschia, Pleurosigma and Thalassionema were dominant. On certain occasions, the influence of planktonic blooms was also seen on the biofilm community. A comparative study of biofilms formed on the two substrata revealed significant differences in density and diversity. However species composition was almost constant. In addition to substratum variations, the biofilm diatom community structure also showed significant seasonal variations, which were attributed to physico-chemical and biological changes in both the water and substratum. Temporal variations in the tychopelagic diatoms of the water were also observed to exert an influence on the biofilm diatom community. Variations in diatom communities may determine the functional ecosystem of the benthic environment.  相似文献

To investigate the relationship between fish parasite communities and water quality level, metazoan parasites were examined in 157 specimens of chub (Leuciscus cephalus L.), sampled in four lowland water courses (northern Italy): Ticino river (unpolluted), Naviglio Pavese Canal (slightly polluted), Lambro river near the Merone village (polluted) and near Monza (severely polluted). Dactylogyrus vistulae, Paradiplozoon ergensi, Bucephalus polymorphus, Acanthocephalus anguillae and larval stages of Tylodelphys clavata were found in all the sampled sites. The distribution of Lamproglena pulchella and Pomphorhynchus laevis was limited to the unpolluted and slightly polluted river sectors, while Asymphylodora tincae, glochidia, along with larval stages of Diplostomum spathaceum, were absent in the severely polluted site. The variability of the calculated infection indices (prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity), the degree of interactivity among parasites, as well as parameters of species richness and diversity suggest that the structure of parasite communities are affected by the water contamination level.  相似文献

Periphytic diatoms are a key primary producer in floodplain systems. In this study, we assessed the species and functional traits in the periphytic diatom community in three lentic environments directly connected to the Paraná River shortly after damming and a decade later. Samples were collected in 2001–2002 and 2010–2011 during high waters phase. Periphytic samples were obtained from Eichhornia azurea Kunth, found in the shore zone of these environments. We recorded a total of 90 diatom species. 47 taxa were exclusive during the period shortly after damming and 18 taxa were only found in 2010–2011. The analysis of the similarity, diversity, beta diversity and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) suggested that there were differences in the species and functional traits of the periphytic diatom community between the two study periods. Variations in water transparency and nutrient (including nitrogen and phosphorus forms) were the most important variables shaping diatom communities diatoms during the study periods. High and motile profiles were characteristic shortly after damming and taxa of high and low profiles predominated a decade later. High transparency, high water and nitrogen levels favored the development of high and low profile, such as Gomphonema augur var. augur, Synedra goulardii and Amphora sp., whereas taxa belonging to high-profile and motile algae (e.g., Eunotia indica, Nitzschia amphibia) were found in the opposite conditions. Species turnover was an important diversity component that was greatly influenced by limnologic differences over time, represented by environmental and temporal dissimilarities between the years. These changes reinforce the modifications that have occurred in the environmental component of the Upper Paraná River floodplain downstream of the dam from the start of its operation.  相似文献

A blooming diatom sample from Isahaya Tidal Flat in the Ariake Sea, south‐west Japan, before the bay was closed and drained following the Isahaya‐Bay Reclamation Project, is taxonomically examined. When the sample was collected on 25 May 1996, the area was a muddy tidal flat. Altogether, 103 diatom species were observed within 1000 counts of frustules. Both the dominant and subdominant diatom species were large raphid species. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy observation revealed that the dominant species was Haslea nipkowii (F.Meister) Poulin et G. Masse, which was originally described as a species of Gymsigma. So far, a report of correctly identified H. nipkowii has been presented only from China, because H. nipkowii sensu Poulin et al. from USA and France probably belongs to the other taxon, Gymsigma pallidum Riznyk. The subdominant species is described as a new species, Nitzschia gyrosigmasp. nov. This new species is similar to Nitzschia sigmoidea under light microscopy, but scanning electron microscopy observation reveals that their fine structures are quite different. Nitzschia granulata var. hyalina is transferred to the genus of Tryblionella and raised to an independent species, Tryblionella hyalina (Amosse) comb. nov.  相似文献
