A Babesia sp. isolated from eastern cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus) is morphologically similar and genetically identical, based on SSU rRNA gene comparisons, to 2 agents responsible for human babesiosis in the United States. This zoonotic agent is closely related to the European parasite, Babesia divergens. The 2 organisms were characterized by in vitro comparisons. In vitro growth of the rabbit Babesia sp. was supported in human and cottontail rabbit erythrocytes, but not in bovine cells. Babesia divergens was supported in vitro in bovine and human erythrocytes, but not in cottontail rabbit cells. Morphometric analysis classifies B. divergens as a small babesia in bovine erythrocytes, but the parasite exceeds this size in human erythrocytes. The rabbit Babesia sp. is large, the same size in both human or rabbit erythrocytes, and is significantly larger than B. divergens. Eight or more rabbit Babesia sp. parasites may occur within a single erythrocyte, sometimes in a floret array, unlike B. divergens. The erythrocyte specificity and morphological differences reported in this study agree with previous in vivo results and validate the use of in vitro methods for characterization of Babesia species.  相似文献

Growth and development of Haemonchus contortus were examined in jirds and were compared to these processes in lambs. Number, sex, size, and stage of development were determined for worms recovered at necropsy at various times postinoculation (PI) from immunosuppressed jirds inoculated with approximately 1,000 exsheathed infective larvae (L3) of H. contortus. In addition, gastric tissue samples from jirds were examined histologically. Parallel studies were done in lambs inoculated with approximately 7,500 L3. Typically, 5-30% of the inoculum established and survived in jirds at reasonably stable numbers to day 14 PI. By day 21 PI, worm numbers in jirds decreased dramatically. Although the parasite was similar in size and development on day 4 PI in jirds and lambs, from day 7 PI on, worms were significantly smaller and less developed in jirds. On histological examination, the parasite was found only in the glandular portion of the stomach of jirds (anatomically similar to its predilection site in the abomasum of lambs), and histological changes were consistent for both host species. Although growth and development of H. contortus are slower and incomplete in jirds, the parasite establishes, grows, and develops (at anatomically comparable sites in both hosts) in this model. Thus, the model appears to provide a useful laboratory host to study H. contortus.  相似文献

The influence of maternal antibodies on clinical and serological response after experimental inoculation with Babesia divergens of newborn calves was studied. Five calves, born to dams seropositive for B.divergens, (Group 1) had specific maternal antibodies when tested 12 h after their first feeding of colostrum. At that point they were inoculated i.v. with B.divergens infected erythrocytes. Five other calves, born to dams seronegative for B.divergens, (Group 2) had no Babesia specific maternal antibodies when inoculated at the same age. Babesia divergens organisms were demonstrated in blood smears from calves in both groups at some point 5 to 10 days p.i. All calves in both groups had B.divergens specific IgM antibodies at 7 to 17 days p.i. as shown by a modified IF-test. Specific IgG antibodies, transferred by colostrum, were found in all calves of Group 1 before inoculation of B.divergens. The IgG titre of these animals increased by a doubling dilution step at 11–25 days p.i. Among calves of Group 2 specific IgG antibodies were found at first between day 9 and 15 p.i. Both IgM and IgG antibody titres had to be investigated since demonstrated IgG antibodies can originate both from maternally transferred antibodies and from actively produced antibodies after an infection. There was no difference in clinical parameters; parasitaemia, PCV, Hb, and rectal temperature between the groups. This experiment gives evidence that there can be a resistance to bovine babesiosis in newborn calves independent of maternal antibodies.  相似文献

Raccoon roundworms (Baylisascaris procyonis) and other Baylisascaris species cause patent or latent larva migrans (LM) in a variety of mammals and birds, including humans. It is not clear whether LM by Baylisascaris transfuga, roundworms of bears, is associated with clinical neurological disorders. To clarify this issue, ICR and BALB/c mice as well as Mongolian jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) were orally inoculated with 2,000-5,000 embryonated eggs of B. transfuga. In mice, the ascarid caused symptomatic LM of limited extent and duration, whereas the infection was fatal in jirds; i.e., they exhibited general signs such as severe depression and emaciation on days 8-11 postinfection (PI) and died, or they developed progressive and fatal neurological disorders after day 14 PI. Histological examination showed B. transfuga larvae in the brain of all mice and jirds examined, and the larvae collected from them developed to a size comparable with that of B. procyonis. There existed, however, critical differences in host reactions against larvae localized in the brain of mice and jirds; B. transfuga larvae found in mice were surrounded by granulomatous reactions and immobilized, whereas larvae found in jirds were free from any host reaction and mobile, causing extensive malacia.  相似文献

The transfer of a nucleus into a cytoplasm of a genetically foreign cell and its subsequent multiplication in the cytoplasm of this cell characterize most parasitic red algal species and their interactions with specific red algal hosts. Nuclei enter the host's cytoplasm upon cell fusion of parasite and host cell; here, they replicate, are spread to contiguous host cells, and ultimately are packaged into spores that reinfect other host thalli. In this study, we examined whether the proplastids and mitochondria that occur in these red algal adelphoparasites are acquired from their host or whether they are unique to the parasite and are brought into the host along with the parasite nucleus. To establish their origins and fates, plastid and mitochondrial restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) of parasite cells were compared with those of their host plastid and mitochondrial DNA in three host and parasite pairs. For plastids, no RFLP differences were found between hosts and parasites, supporting an earlier conclusion, based on microscopic studies, that the proplastids of parasites are acquired from their hosts. For mitochondria, characteristic RFLP differences were detected between host and parasite for two of the pairs of species but not for the third. Evidence of the evolutionary difference between hosts and their parasites was shown by RFLP differences between nuclear ribosomal repeat regions.  相似文献

The susceptibility of Mongolian jirds, Meriones unguiculatus, and PD4 hamsters, Mesocricetus auratus, to Brugia pahangi was compared based on the percentage adult worm recoveries, mean microfilaremia levels, and adult worm lengths. Fourteen male jirds and seventeen male PD4 hamsters were each inoculated subcutaneously in the left inguinal region with 90-100 L3 of B. pahangi and necropsied 130-150 days after inoculation. There were no significant differences between jirds and hamsters in mean adult worm recoveries (24.7 vs 25.4%) and prepatent periods (69.9 vs 77 days after inoculation). In hamsters, 85% of recovered worms were found in the heart and lungs and 15% were found in genital lymphatic vessels. In jirds, distribution of recovered worms was 66% in genital lymphatics, 23% in the heart and lungs, 8% in the peritoneal cavity, and 3% in lymphatic vessels in other sites. The mean microfilaremia level in jirds (16.5/20 microliter) was significantly higher than in hamsters (8.7/20 microliter. Female worms in the genital lymphatics of jirds were significantly longer than female worms in the genital lymphatics of PD4 hamsters (33.5 vs 27.3 mm). Human erythrocytes infected with Plasmodium falciparum have markedly increased permeability to diverse solutes, many of which may be mediated by an unusual small conductance ion channel, the plasmodial surface anion channel (PSAC). Because these increases may be essential for parasite survival in the bloodstream, an important question is whether other intraerythrocytic parasites induce similar ion channels. Here, we examined this question using human erythrocytes infected with Babesia divergens, a distantly related apicomplexan parasite that can cause severe disease in immunocompromised humans. Osmotic lysis experiments after enrichment of infected erythrocytes with a new method revealed that these parasites also increase host permeability to various organic solutes. These permeability changes differed significantly from those induced by P. falciparum in transport rates, selectivity profiles and temperature dependence. Cell-attached and whole-cell patch-clamp experiments confirmed and extended these differences because neither PSAC-like channels nor significant increases in whole-cell anion conductance were seen after B. divergens infection. While both babesia and plasmodia increase host erythrocyte permeability to a diverse collection of organic solutes, they utilize fundamentally different mechanisms.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. One intact and 2 splenectomized calves were infected with Babesia divergens and the persistence of the parasites in the blood was followed by periodic subinoculations into susceptible splenectomized calves. After periods varying from 3–7 years the parasites failed to be demonstrable by this method. When the immunity of the animals was challenged by the intravenous injection of blood containing Babesia divergens , they were all resistant to reinfection. These observations add support to the suggestion that sterile immunity may play a part in the resistance of cattle to reinfection with B. divergens.  相似文献

Parasitism has been argued as one of the major costs of breeding sociality in birds. However, there is no clear evidence for an increased parasite pressure associated with the evolutionary transition from solitary to colonial breeding. I used the pairwise comparative method to test whether colonial bird species incur in a greater risk of infection and if they must to face with a greater diversity of blood parasites (Haematozoa), by comparing pairs of congeners that included one solitary and one colonial breeding species. The richness, both in terms of number of species and number of genera, as well as the prevalence of blood parasites resulted higher in colonial species than in their solitary breeding sisters, while controlling for differences in research effort and other potentially confounding effects. These results point towards higher transmission rates of blood parasites among colonial hosts. Given the detrimental effects of blood parasites on their host fitness, the higher risk of infection and the exposition to a more diverse parasite fauna may have imposed an important cost associated to the evolution of avian coloniality. This may help to explain why colonial species have larger immune system organs, as well as to explore differences in other host life history traits potentially shaped by blood parasites.  相似文献

Theory predicts a positive relationship between parasite infection intensity and host density. However, this generalization is complicated in natural systems by differences in life history among parasite taxa, e.g., transmissibility. Accordingly, predictions relating host density to parasite load should be specific to each parasite taxon. To illustrate this, we studied parasites that differed greatly in life history in the context of the Galapagos hawk's (Buteo galapagoensis) variably cooperative mating system. Two louse (Phthiraptera) species were collected: Colpocephalum turbinatum (Amblycera), with 53 host species, and Degeeriella regalis (Ischnocera), with 10 host species, although B. galapagoensis was the only known Galapagos host. Sixty territorial adult male hawks from 26 groups of 1-6 males were quantitatively sampled for lice. Average abundance and intensity of C. turbinatum but not D. regalis were significantly larger in large groups of hawks than small groups. Males from the same polyandrous group harbored significantly correlated abundances of C. turbinatum but not D. regalis. Prevalence, average abundance, and intensity of C. turbinatum were significantly higher than D. regalis. These are the first results to demonstrate significant differences in a suite of population responses between these louse suborders in the context of host sociality.  相似文献

Parasite lineages commonly diverge when host lineages diverge. However, when large clades of hosts and parasites are analyzed, some cases suggest host switching as another major diversification mechanism. The first step in host switching is the appearance of a parasite on an atypical host, or “straggling.” We analyze the conditions associated with straggling events. We use five species of colonially nesting seabirds from the Galapagos Archipelago and two genera of highly specific ectoparasitic lice to examine host switching. We use both genetic and morphological identification of lice, together with measurements of spatial distribution of hosts in mixed breeding colonies, to test: (1) effects of local host community composition on straggling parasite identity; (2) effects of relative host density within a mixed colony on straggling frequency and parasite species identity; and (3) how straggling rates are influenced by the specifics of louse attachment. Finally, we determine whether there is evidence of breeding in cases where straggling adult lice were found, which may indicate a shift from straggling to the initial stages of host switching. We analyzed more than 5,000 parasite individuals and found that only ~1% of lice could be considered stragglers, with ~5% of 436 host individuals having straggling parasites. We found that the presence of the typical host and recipient host in the same locality influenced straggling. Additionally, parasites most likely to be found on alternate hosts are those that are smaller than the typical parasite of that host, implying that the ability of lice to attach to the host might limit host switching. Given that lice generally follow Harrison's rule, with larger parasites on larger hosts, parasites infecting the larger host species are less likely to successfully colonize smaller host species. Moreover, our study supports the general perception that successful colonization of a novel host is extremely rare, as we found only one nymph of a straggling species, which may indicate successful reproduction.  相似文献

Parasites can vary in the number of host species they infect, a trait known as “host specificity”. Here we quantify phylogenetic signal—the tendency for closely related species to resemble each other more than distantly related species—in host specificity of avian haemosporidian parasites (genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon) using data from MalAvi, the global avian haemosporidian database. We used the genetic data (479 base pairs of cytochrome b) that define parasite lineages to produce genus level phylogenies. Combining host specificity data with those phylogenies revealed significant levels of phylogenetic signal while controlling for sampling effects; phylogenetic signal was higher when the phylogenetic diversity of hosts was taken into account. We then tested for correlations in the host specificity of pairs of sister lineages. Correlations were generally close to zero for all three parasite genera. These results suggest that while the host specificity of parasite sister lineages differ, larger clades may be relatively specialised or generalised.  相似文献

Parasite virulence determines both the impact that parasites have on their hosts and parasite fitness. While most studies of virulence have involved single-species host–parasite interactions, the majority of parasites are likely to use multiple concurrent host species. Our understanding of how this impacts on parasite epidemiology and virulence is limited. Using the bumble bee Bombus lucorum , which exists in sympatry with B. terrestris in multi-species assemblages, and their generalist micosporidian parasite Nosema bombi , we tested whether the apparent paradox of parasite maintenance due to parasite virulence in a single host, B. terrestris , could be resolved through understanding the parasite's virulence in this sympatric host species. Nosema bombi significantly impacted colony growth, individual longevity, and individual development in B. lucorum . However, these effects were different both qualitatively and quantitatively to the parasite's impact in B. terrestris . Infected colonies of B. lucorum successfully produced both male and female reproductives, and infected female reproductives were capable of successful mating. Variation in life-history across host species may explain differences in the virulence, or impact of the parasite in B. terrestris and B. lucorum , with species with shorter life-cycles being more likely to transfer the parasite from one annual generation to the next. These results suggest that to understand the virulence and epidemiology of multi-host parasites we need to examine their ecological interactions across their various host species.  相似文献

Gyrodactylus rugiensis was originally described as a parasite occurring on the marine gobies Pomatoschistus minutus and Pomatoschistus microps. In our preliminary survey this species was also frequently found on Pomatoschistus pictus and Pomatoschistus lozanoi. Subsequent molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacers rDNA region revealed that this parasite actually represents a complex of two apparently cryptic species, one restricted to P. microps and the other shared by P. minutus, P. lozanoi and P. pictus. Morphometric analyses were conducted on 17 features of the opisthaptoral hard parts of specimens collected from all four host species. Standard discriminant analysis showed a clear separation of both genotypes by significant differences in marginal hook and ventral bar features. Statistical classifiers (linear discriminant analysis and nearest neighbours) resulted in an estimated misclassification rate of 4.7 and 3.1%, respectively. Based on molecular, morphological and statistical analyses a new species, Gyrodactylus rugiensoides is described. This species seems to display a lower host-specificity than generally observed for Gyrodactylus species as it infects three sympatric host species.However, seasonal and host-dependent morphometric variation is shown for G. rugiensoides collected on P. pictus. Host-switching and gene flow might be important factors preventing speciation on closely related and sympatric host species. The presence of host associated species complexes in this Gyrodactylus-Pomatoschistus system is also confirmed by the presence of two host-dependent genotypes within G. micropsi found on P. minutus and P. lozanoi, and P. microps, respectively. By comparing host and parasite phylogeny, phylogenetic and ecological factors influencing host-specificity are discussed.  相似文献

Similarity in parasite community composition often decreases with both increasing geographic distance and environmental dissimilarity between localities, though it is unknown whether similarity in local abundance of selected parasite species follows similar rules. We tested this using data on metazoan parasites in 126 stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) populations, with locations from Eurasia, eastern North America, and western North America treated separately. Similarity values were regressed against pairwise distances between localities; after correcting for distance, the effect of environmental dissimilarity was assessed by splitting similarity values into those between pairs of localities with either similar, moderately different or very different salinity (freshwater, marine or brackish). For selected parasite species, pairwise similarity in abundance (mean no. parasites per host) were computed across all localities, and treated as above. Similarity in parasite community composition decreased with increasing distance between localities in all three geographic regions. A significant effect of environmental difference was found in all regions: for a given distance between two sites, their parasite communities were more similar if they were of the same salinity. Slopes for distance decay in similarity were consistently higher for eastern North America than for Eurasia. Among the 12 parasite species for which sufficient data were available, only 4 showed the expected relationship, i.e. the greater the geographical separation between host populations, the greater the difference in parasite abundance; also, significant effects of environmental differences in salinity were only found for 3 of these species. Our findings show that parasite communities of sticklebacks are structured by geographical distance and local salinity conditions. The results indicate that strong effects at the community level do not translate into corresponding effects at the population level, suggesting that parasite dispersal and population dynamics are controlled by different processes.  相似文献

We examined 215 Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) at necropsy to determine the helminth fauna. Six species were identified: Heterocheilus tunicatus (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea); Anoplocephala sp. (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea); and 4 species of trematodes, Cochleotrema cochleotrema (Digenea: Opisthotrematidae), Chiorchis fabaceus (Digenea: Paramphistomatidae), Nudacotyle undicola (Digenea: Nudacotylidae), and Moniligerum blairi (Digenea: Opisthotrematidae). Seventy-three percent of the manatees examined were infected with at least 1 species of helminth. The mean number of species of helminths per infected manatee was 1.9 with a range of 1-4. Fifty-nine manatees were helminth-free; 30 of these were calves. No associations were found between the intensity of helminth infections and host sex, age class, season, and geographic location of recovery, or cause of death. Differences in parasite prevalence between age classes were highly significant for Chiorchis, Cochleotrema, and Heterocheilus, due to a low number of infected calves. A higher prevalence of Cochleotrema was found in manatees recovered from eastern Florida, and Heterocheilus was evident in significantly more manatees from western and souther Florida. Comparisons in the parasite fauna are made among Florida manatees and other sirenian populations, and a brief review of sirenian parasites is included.  相似文献

1. This article compares generalist (parasite species found on two or more host species) and specialist (found on only one host species) monogenean parasite species of fish. The reduction of the host range – that is an increase in host specificity – may correspond with a better adaptation of the parasite to a more predictable host environment. A more predictable environment may allow the parasite species to develop specific adaptations.
2. We assume that the more predictable host environment can be evaluated by host body size, since numerous life-traits, such as longevity, are positively correlated with size.
3. We found that specialist parasites parasitize larger hosts species than generalist parasites. We also found a good relationship between host body size and parasite body size for specialist parasite species.
4. An adaptation to the mechanical problems encountered in the host's gill chamber may lead to an increase in parasite body size. The infection of a larger part of the host population in order to decrease the chances of local extinction due to fluctuations of host abundance may be another adaptive mechanism.
5. We found a negative correlation between parasite body size and prevalence for generalist parasite species. This relationship disappeared when using the comparative method controlling for phylogeny, which proved that it was a phylogenetic effect.  相似文献

The flesh-burrowing parasitic isopod Ichthyoxenus fushanensis was found infecting the body cavity of a freshwater fish, Varicorhinus bacbatulus , in heterosexual pairs. Herein we investigate the question of how the host body size may constrain the parasite size and clutch size by analyzing the interactions among the body size and clutch size of the parasite, and host size. Due to the low transmission rate of I. fushanensis to its host and the positive relationship between clutch size and female size, selection may favor larger females with larger clutch sizes to compensate for massive losses of manca (the free-living juveniles). The path model reveals that clutch size depends not only directly on female size, but also on the sizes of her host and mate. Female size also depends on the sizes of the host and her mate. A negative correlation exists between the body sizes of the paired males and females. This negative correlation may be regarded as a consequence of competition for limited available space or other resources provided by the host. The effects of host size on parasite size, however, act on the total volume of both sexes as a whole, not specifically on either the female or the male. In this case, the available space/resources may not allow both individuals of different sexes to evolve toward a larger size simultaneously. Under the constraint of host size, a strategy of reducing the body size of the paired male may provide a way to increase the body size of the paired female and achieve a larger clutch size.  相似文献

Between October 2001 and March 2002, 103 specimens of A. tricolor from Angra dos Reis (23 degrees 01' S, 44 degrees 19' W), in the coastal zone of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were analyzed in order to study their metazoan parasite infracommunities. Ten species of metazoan parasites were collected: 4 digeneans, 1 cestode, 1 acantocephalan, 2 nematodes, 1 copepod, and 1 hirudinean; 77.7% of the fishes were parasitized by one or more metazoan, with a mean of 3.5 +/- 6.2 parasite/fish. Digenean was the most dominant with 4 species that accounted for 53.2% of the total parasites collected; Ergasilus sp. was the most abundant species. Abundance and prevalence of Parahemiurus merus (Linton, 1910) were positively correlated with the total length of host. Relationships between total body length of fish and both total parasite abundance and mean parasite species richness were observed. Mean parasite diversity of species was correlated to host's total length, with significant differences found between male and female fishes. Two pairs of larval species showed significant positive association and covariation. The metazoan parasite infracommunities of A. tricolor presented dominance of larval endoparasites; correlation of parasite abundance, diversity, and species richness with host total length; and low number of parasite interspecific relationships. The parasite community of A. tricolor showed some similarities with the parasite community of another South American Atlantic engraulid.  相似文献
