Densities of Bombus flavifrons and B. rufocinctus were measured over one summer in 23 and 11 discrete subalpine meadows, respectively. I assessed the relation between observed bee densities and meadow size, elevation, floristics, temperature, and time of day by multiple regression. Multivariate regression solutions for each week of observation accounted for 38 to 61% of the variation in density for B. flavifrons and 47 to 87% for B. rufocinctus . Temperature or time of day consistently accounted for the most variation in density of the two species. In early summer meadow size or elevation also accounted for a large proportion of explained variation in B. flavifrons density; as the summer progressed meadow floristics increasingly contributed to the explanation of variation in both species.
In mid- to late summer a statistically significant portion of the variation in densities not explained by habitat characteristics was accounted for by densities of congeners: i.e., densities of B. flavifrons and B. rufocinctus were negatively related in eight meadows where they co-occurred. In experimental meadows where all Bombus but one of the two target species were removed. B. rufocinctus underwent significant positive density compensation but B. flavifrons did not. Biological invasions are regarded as one of the main drivers of habitat degradation in island ecosystems. Mediterranean islands have been subjected to a high degree of land conversion over the past 60 years, resulting in a massive reduction in the amount of rural land and the sprawl of tourist activities. The aims of this paper are to evaluate the current level of invasion of alien plant species in semi-natural vegetation types that have developed after the abandonment of agriculture and to analyze the relationships between non-native species, native flora, and environmental characteristics. Two Italian islands (Ponza and Ventotene) were surveyed using a random-stratified sampling. The occurrence and relative cover of alien plant species were compared and separate analyses were performed for the native flora. Abundance patterns of both native and alien species were then studied in the light of the environmental and anthropogenic features. Although we found that some non-native species are extremely widespread, their relative cover at the plot level is low. Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance and Indicator Species Analysis revealed dissimilarities in the native species composition, while Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis tests showed differences in the ecological requirements (moisture, soil reaction, and nitrogen) of the native species pool. Canonical Correspondence Analysis pointed to the importance of the proximity to agricultural areas, human disturbance, and past land management, particularly residual terraces, in determining the difference between plant communities on the two islands. The results of our study suggest that traditional forms of agriculture may represent a key element for countering the establishment and spread of non-native plants in Mediterranean areas. 相似文献

Background and aims
Approximately 50 % of belowground organic carbon is present in the northern permafrost region and due to changes in climate there are concerns that this carbon will be rapidly released to the atmosphere. The release of carbon in arctic soils is thought to be intimately linked to the N cycle through the N cycle’s influence on microbial activity. The majority of new N input into arctic systems occurs through N2-fixation; therefore, N2-fixation may be the key driver of greenhouse gases from these ecosystems.Methods
At Alexandra Fjord lowland, Ellesmere Island, Canada concurrent measurements of N2-fixation, N mineralization and nitrification rates, dissolved organic soil N (DON) and C, inorganic soil N and surface greenhouse gas fluxes (CO2, N2O and CH4) were taken in two ecosystem types (Wet Sedge Meadow and Dryas Heath) over the 2009 growing season (June-August). Using Structural Equation Modelling we evaluated the hypothesis that CO2, CH4 and N2O flux are linked to N2-fixation via the N cycle.Results
The soil N cycle was linked to CO2 flux in the Dryas Heath ecosystem via DON concentrations, but there was no link between the soil N cycle and CO2 flux in the Wet Sedge Meadow. Methane flux was also not linked to the soil N cycle, nor surface soil temperature or moisture in either ecosystem. The soil N cycle was closely linked to N2O emissions but via nitrification in the Wet Sedge Meadow and inorganic N in the Dryas Heath, indicating the important role of nitrification in net N2O flux from arctic ecosystems.Conclusions
Our results should be interpreted with caution given the high variability in both the rates of the N cycling processes and greenhouse gas flux found in both ecosystems over the growing season. However, while N2-fixation and other N cycling processes may play a more limited role in instantaneous CO2 emissions, these processes clearly play an important role in controlling N2O emissions. 相似文献4.

在1965、1983、1994和2000年4个时期调查数据的基础上,对北京东灵山区亚高山草甸物种多样性变化和生活型谱进行了对比研究,结果显示,近年来东灵山亚高山草甸的物种多样性呈下降趋势,尤其是1983~1994年的下降速度明显加快,利用重要值作为权重参数对不同时期的东灵山亚高山草甸生活型谱进行了比较,所得到的结果反映了20世纪80年代以来,伴随旅游发展而迅速增加的马匹散牧已经对亚高山草甸的群落外貌造成了严重的不良影响,群落高度降低,物种组成改变及植被盖度下降等,说明过度放牧是东灵山亚高山草甸退化的重要影响因素,根据东灵山风景区亚高山草甸目前存在的问题,我们建议当地有关部门科学地确定东灵山风景区旅游容量,首先要严格限制风景区马匹的散牧,关闭风景区内的跑马场和牧马帐蓬,并通过加强宣传、管理和景区的基本建设,充分发挥生态系统的服务功能,实现在保护生态环境的前提下实现资源的持续利用。 相似文献

Urban habitats are generally considered highly invaded by exotic species due to the frequency and extent of disturbance caused
by human activities and development. Our previous study had demonstrated that forested wetlands within residential areas are
more extensively invaded than wetlands within industrial–commercial areas. In this study, we investigate whether the structure
of the forest edge and seed dispersal can explain the differential in the invasion of wetlands surrounded by industrial and
residential land use. Our results indicate that edges of industrially bordered wetlands are denser, with vegetation concentrated
at the boundary of tree growth, whereas the edges of residentially bordered wetlands are more open and diffuse. This difference
influences the number of seeds and species capable of dispersing into the wetland. Less dense edges resulted in a higher number
of seeds entering residential wetlands; however, there were no differences in the numbers of exotic seeds or exotic species
in the seed rain residential and industrial wetlands. Although seed dispersal could not directly explain differences in the
current extent of invasion of these sites, seed dispersal did follow corridor pathways, including ditches and trails that
breach the edges and extend through the wetlands. These disturbances act as corridors for seed dispersal into both types wetlands
and may play a role in introducing new species to the interior of the wetland, an outcome supported by a higher number of
exotic species in the seed banks of residential sites. Our results suggest that both the type of adjoining land use and the
provision of access to people on trails in urban wetlands can affect the composition of these communities. 相似文献

Purpose
As a consequence of the multi-functionality of land, the impact assessment of land use in Life Cycle Impact Assessment requires the modelling of several impact pathways covering biodiversity and ecosystem services. To provide consistency amongst these separate impact pathways, general principles for their modelling are provided in this paper. These are refinements to the principles that have already been proposed in publications by the UNEP-SETAC Life Cycle Initiative. In particular, this paper addresses the calculation of land use interventions and land use impacts, the issue of impact reversibility, the spatial and temporal distribution of such impacts and the assessment of absolute or relative ecosystem quality changes. Based on this, we propose a guideline to build methods for land use impact assessment in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).Results
Recommendations are given for the development of new characterization models and for which a series of key elements should explicitly be stated, such as the modelled land use impact pathways, the land use/cover typology covered, the level of biogeographical differentiation used for the characterization factors, the reference land use situation used and if relative or absolute quality changes are used to calculate land use impacts. Moreover, for an application of the characterisation factors (CFs) in an LCA study, data collection should be transparent with respect to the data input required from the land use inventory and the regeneration times. Indications on how generic CFs can be used for the background system as well as how spatial-based CFs can be calculated for the foreground system in a specific LCA study and how land use change is to be allocated should be detailed. Finally, it becomes necessary to justify the modelling period for which land use impacts of land transformation and occupation are calculated and how uncertainty is accounted for.Discussion
The presented guideline is based on a number of assumptions: Discrete land use types are sufficient for an assessment of land use impacts; ecosystem quality remains constant over time of occupation; time and area of occupation are substitutable; transformation time is negligible; regeneration is linear and independent from land use history and landscape configuration; biodiversity and multiple ecosystem services are independent; the ecological impact is linearly increasing with the intervention; and there is no interaction between land use and other drivers such as climate change. These assumptions might influence the results of land use Life Cycle Impact Assessment and need to be critically reflected.Conclusions and recommendations
In this and the other papers of the special issue, we presented the principles and recommendations for the calculation of land use impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services on a global scale. In the framework of LCA, they are mainly used for the assessment of land use impacts in the background system. Land use change and human population growth are accelerating the fragmentation and insularization of wildlife habitats worldwide.
The conservation and management of wildlife in the resultant ‘island’ ecosystems in the context of global warming is challenging
due to the isolation and reduced size of the ecosystems and hence the scale over which ecosystem processes can operate. We
analyzed trends in numbers of nine large herbivores in Kenya’s Lake Nakuru National Park to understand how rainfall and temperature
variability, surrounding land use changes, and boundary fencing affected wildlife population dynamics inside the park during
1970–2011. Buffalo, zebra and Thomson’s gazelle numbers increased persistently. Grant’s gazelle and impala increased initially
then gradually declined. Waterbuck and warthog numbers progressively declined to levels that potentially threatened their
local population persistence. The total biomass of ungulates tripled from 1970 to 2011, with buffalo replacing waterbuck as
the predominant species in biomass. Increased competition from buffalo and zebra, heightened predation and illicit human harvests
probably all contributed to the declines by waterbuck and warthog. Density-dependent limitation of population growth within
the park confines was evident for buffalo, impala, eland, giraffe, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles. Fluctuations in the lake
level related to varying rainfall affected changes in animal abundance through expansion of the lake area and flooding of
grasslands bordering the lake. Unusually, the most stressful conditions were associated with high water levels following high
rainfall. There was also evidence of carry-over effects from prior habitat conditions affecting all species. The relatively
stable populations of all species except warthog and waterbuck demonstrate the remarkable capacity of this small, insularized
park to retain viable populations of most of the large herbivores, without much management intervention. 相似文献

Small mammals were found on set-aside and surrounding farmland. Wood mice showed a different pattern of demography at two sites, with higher densities, greater survival, heavier weights and longer breeding seasons at Aldroughty than at Newburgh. These differences were thought to be due to a difference in habitat productivity at the two sites. Field voles showed less of a difference in population dynamics between the two sites, and both species of vole maintained populations at low densities. 相似文献

As part of a program to minimize the accidental transportation of Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica) through cargo aircraft to areas where they are not established, a 4-yr trapping project was initiated to study the relative distribution and dynamics of the beetles along a trap line around the Indianapolis International Airport. Land use influence on beetle abundance (trap catch) was assessed using a geographic information system. Trap catch was consistently high in some locations and low in others. In general, high trap catches occurred near agronomic land planted with corn or soybeans, which are both preferred hosts of adult beetles. Low trap catches generally occurred in areas lacking preferred host plants. The amount of agronomic land within 500 m of the traps was always positively correlated with trap catch. Average trap catches were highly correlated by location from year to year, indicating stability of the relative distribution of the beetles along the trap line. Because high trap catches consistently occurred in the same locations, it can be inferred that trapping can be an effective method to monitor Japanese beetle populations. Taking airport-owned agronomic land out of corn and soybean production near the cargo terminals may reduce beetle activity in these areas. 相似文献

The influence of catchment land use on stream integrity across multiple spatial scales 总被引:37,自引:1,他引:37
1. Despite wide recognition of the need for catchment-scale management to ensure the integrity of river ecosystems, the science and policy basis for joint management of land and water remains poorly understood. An interdisciplinary case study of a river basin in south-eastern Michigan is presented. 2. The River Raisin drains an area of 2776 km2, of which some 70% is agricultural land. The upper basin consists of till and outwash, and both topography and land use/cover are diverse. The lower basin consists of fine textured lake deposits, is of low relief, and land use is primarily agricultural. 3. The River Raisin basin historically was a region of oak-savannah and wetlands. It was deforested, drained and converted to farmland during the mid-nineteenth century. Human population reached a plateau at about 1880, and then underwent a second period of growth after 1950, mainly in small urban areas. More recently, the amount of agricultural land has declined and forested land has increased, in accord with a general decline in farming activity. 4. It could be suggested that the influence of land use on stream integrity is scale-dependent. Instream habitat structure and organic matter inputs are determined primarily by local conditions such as vegetative cover at a site, whereas nutrient supply, sediment delivery, hydrology and channel characteristics are influenced by regional conditions, including landscape features and land use/cover at some distance upstream and lateral to stream sites. 5. Sediment concentrations measured during low flows were higher in areas of greater agriculture. In a comparison of two subcatchments, sediment yields were up to ten times greater in the more agricultural location, in response to similar storm events. A distributed parameter model linked to a geographical information system predicted that an increase in forested land cover would result in dramatic declines in runoff and sediment and nutrient yields. 6. Habitat quality and biotic integrity varied widely among individual stream sites in accord with patterns in land use/cover. Extent of agricultural land at the subcatchment scale was the best single predictor of local stream conditions. Local riparian vegetation was uncorrelated with overall land use and was a weak secondary predictor of habitat quality and biotic integrity. 7. Investigation of the regulatory agencies involved in land and water management in the basin revealed a complex web of overlapping political jurisdictions. Most land-use decision-making occurs at the local level of township, city or village. Unfortunately, local decision-making bodies typically lack the information and jurisdictional authority to influence up- and downstream events. 相似文献

近些年,将生态系统服务价值运用于土地利用变化研究成为世界知名期刊上的重要话题,然而政策制定者在实践中却很少采纳这些研究成果.本文通过大量文献阅读,归纳出制约生态系统服务价值运用于土地管理实践的三大瓶颈,分别是价值测量的困难性、驱动因素的复合性和评价标准的片面性,并提出了相应的解决路径.最后,对我国未来的研究方向进行展望,认为基于生态系统服务价值对土地利用变化进行研究,更适合采用小尺度区域的比较分析方法,尤其应关注自然生态资源及其价值的过度性损失. 相似文献

The relationship between root Al concentrations and Al fractions in the soil solution was examined in a mature Abies amabilis ecosystem in the Cascade Range of Washington State. The naturally acidic soils in these ecosystems lead to high concentrations of aqueous Al in soil solutions and contribute to the biocycling of Al by the A. amabilis/T. mertensiana stand. Root concentrations of Al were very closely related to aqueous Al3+ activities, but poorly correlated with total aqueous Al concentrations. The solution Al/Ca molar ratios followed a seasonal cycle with low values during the fall and high values during the spring. Ratios remained <1 throughout the year in the Oa horizon while they varied between 2 and 14 in the E and Bhs horizons. The vertical distribution of roots and the mortality of fine roots may be linked to the soil solution Al/Ca ratio. Root cation exchange capacity ranged between 180 and 225 mol g-1 and the exchangeable Al fraction represented from 12–17% of the total Al content in the root. Evidence for solid-phase co-precipitates of Al with PO4 and oxalate was indicated from selective dissolution of the root tissue. Sufficient quantities of PO4 and oxalate exist in the roots to tie up 20–40% of the Al present in the roots of the Oa and E horizons, but only 9% of that present in the Bhs horizon. Species differences in the distribution of Al between the above-ground and below-ground components may be dictated by these retention processes in the fine roots. 相似文献

The transfer of matter by cattle in a dehesa patureland in Central Spain has been quantified by mapping the distribution of dung and different types of cattle behaviour in several areas distinguished by their geomorphological position, vegetation structure and management regime.Cattle show a clear preference for feeding and dung depositing in the low parts of the estate. This leads to an increase in the productivity and a rapid recycling of nutrients in the pasture communities of these areas. Comparing the relative importance of both processes in each vegetational unit, dung accumulation is greater in the higher zones, while in the lower areas biomass consumption is more important. This means that movement of matter by cattle tends to favour the higher ground, in a contrary direction to the downward leaching of nutrients and related processes. In the studied dehesa, this phenomena represents an exploitation factor of the lowland areas, which maintains productive pasture communities more immature in successional terms, by the higher woodland areas, less grazed and with low turnover. This result supports claims made in other studies that animal activity — assessed in our case by the relative impacts of herbivory and dung depositions — connect adjacent ecosystems and thus tends to improve the net energy balance of the more successionally mature part of the system.Livestock movements differ in their spatial pattern during different periods of the year: dispersing in spring and becoming more concentrated and predictable during winter. We analyzed soil water data from three sites with different soil textures in the shortgrass steppe of northeastern Colorado, USA. Our objective was to evaluate the relationship between the occurrence of plant functional types and the effect of soil texture on soil water availability. Soil water availability was greatest in the upper soil layers at all three sites, but the loamy sand site had significantly greater soil water availability than the sandy clay loam and sandy clay sites in wetter years at depths below 60 cm. Calculations of proportional water availability by layer using both field data and fifty-year soil water model simulations, showed that the sandy clay loam and sandy clay soils on average had greater water availability in layers 30 cm and above, but that the loamy sand had the greatest water availability in layers beneath this, particularly at 105 cm. This observation can be linked to the occurrence of a fine textured subsoil at this site. The textural pattern in the loamy sand profile effectively creates two water resources: a shallow pool accessible to all plants; and a deep pool accessible only to deep-rooted plants. This is offered as an explanation for the co-dominance of the two main plant functional types at the loamy sand site. At the other two sites, shallow-rooted shortgrass vegetation dominated, being more consistent with the general pattern for the area. Thus the patterns of vegetation structure at the three sites were consistent with the hypothesis. Aboveground net primary production data for the three sites, along with transpiration estimates from the model simulations, indicated that the additional water availability in the coarse textured soil was associated with higher overall plant productivity.Nomenclature: Taxonomic nomenclature follows R. Stomatal and photosynthetic responses during sun/shade transitions in subalpine plants: influence on water use efficiency 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Summary Different response patterns in net photosynthesis (A) leaf conductance (g) and water use efficiency (WUE= a/transpiration) in three subalpine plants occurred during experimental sun/shade transitions that simulated natural cloudcover. In Frasera speciosa Dougl., a large-leaved herb characteristic of open sites, g was relatively insensitive to transitions in irradiance and variations in A. However, large decreases in leaf temperature resulted in reduced transpiration during shade intervals and relatively constant WUE throughout the experimental sun/shade regime. In the understory herb, Arnica cordifolia Hook., patterns of A and g were similar during sun/shade transitions, but WUE was substantially reduced compared to steady-state levels. A third, somewhat intermediate pattern of A, g, and WUE was found in Artemisia tridentata L., an open site shrub. Higher intercellular CO2 values in A. tridentata suggested that internal, cellular limitations to A were high relative to stomatal limitations in this shrub when compared to the herbaceous species. 相似文献
