Since a genome is a discrete sequence, the elements of which belong to a set of four letters, the question as to whether or not there is an error-correcting code underlying DNA sequences is unavoidable. The most common approach to answering this question is to propose a methodology to verify the existence of such a code. However, none of the methodologies proposed so far, although quite clever, has achieved that goal. In a recent work, we showed that DNA sequences can be identified as codewords in a class of cyclic error-correcting codes known as Hamming codes. In this paper, we show that a complete intron-exon gene, and even a plasmid genome, can be identified as a Hamming code codeword as well. Although this does not constitute a definitive proof that there is an error-correcting code underlying DNA sequences, it is the first evidence in this direction.  相似文献

Tyrosine aminotransferase (L-tyrosine: 2 oxoglutarate aminotransferase; EC 2.6.1.5; TATase) is the first enzyme in the catabolic pathway of tyrosine. The gene of this transaminase is regulated by glucocorticoid hormones as well as via the cAMP pathway. This review gives a brief survey of the structural and physico-chemical properties of this well-known protein. A comparative study of the properties of TATase with other aminotransferases is also included to analyse this molecule for itself, and not only as a marker used in studies on enzymatic induction. Finally, the regulation of the gene expression is presented, in order to underline a few important features of this model.  相似文献

The rove beetle, Aleochara bilineata, is characterised as having monomorphic long sperm (spermatophoral mean approx. +/-2.5%), whilst simultaneously having a large variation in mean sperm length across a mixed age population. Spermatophoral means of between 627 and 996 mum were measured in this investigation. The hypothesis that sperm length increases as a function of male age is tested. In order to examine this hypothesis in a 'good genes' context, three a priori subhypotheses were tested: (1) spermatophoral mean sperm length increases as a function of male age and not as a function of the sequential order of the spermatophore from which sperm were taken, (2) the rate of this increase is dependent upon nutritional intake, and (3) sperm length is not determined by adult body size. The first prediction is supported in its entirety by the data, whereas the second is not supported at all and the third subhypothesis is supported only in older males. These findings are interesting in the field of postcopulatory sexual selection, as this is the first time that such an increase in mean sperm length has been recorded.  相似文献

A major class of replicons in procaryotes is typified by low copy number, nonrandom intracellular distribution, and stable inheritance. Included in this class are chromosomes of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as a number of plasmids from these organisms. Replicons in this major class have remarkable structural and functional similarities in the genes that effect and control replication. In the present work a review of plasmid F is presented as a paradigm for many aspects of this group's maintenance features.  相似文献

Current genetic investigations are performed both on the basis of a rational and biologically based choice of candidate genes and through genome wide scans. Nonetheless, lack of replication is a common problem in psychiatric genetics as well as in other genetic fields. There are a number of reasons for this inconsistency, among them a well known but poorly considered issue is gene coverage. The aim of the present paper is to focus on this well known and defectively deemed bias, especially when a candidate gene approach is chosen. The rational and the technical feasibility of this proposal are discussed as well as a survey of current investigations. Trileucine is utilized as a source of leucine for growth of strains of Escherichia coli K-12 that are deficient in the oligopeptide transport system (Opp). Trithreonine is toxic to E. coli K-12. Opp- mutants of E. coli K-12 retain complete sensitivity to this tripeptide. Moreover, E. coli W, which is resistant to trithreonine, can utlize this tripeptide as a threonine source and this capability is fully maintained in E. coli W (Opp-). A spontaneous trithreonine-resistant mutant of E. coli K-12 (Opp-) has been isolated that has an impaired growth response to trileucine and is resistant to trithreonine. Trileucine competes with the uptake of trithreonine as measured by its ability to relieve trithreonine toxicity in E. coli K-12. It is concluded that trileucine as well as trithreonine are transported into E. coli K-12 or W by a common uptake system that is distinct from the Opp system. Trimethionine can act as a competitor of trileucine or trithreonine-supported growth and as an antagonist of trithreonine toxicity in Opp- mutants. It is concluded that trimethionine is recognized by the trileucine-trithreonine transport system. Trithreonine, trimethionine, and trileucine are also transported by the Opp system, as they all relieve triornithine toxicity towards E. coli W and compete with tetralysine utilization as lysine source for growth of a lysine auxotroph of this strain.  相似文献

Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein-1 (PfEMP-1) is exposed on the surface of infected erythrocytes where it both acts as an important pathogenicity factor in malaria and undergoes antigenic variation as a means of immune evasion. Because the mammalian erythrocyte lacks a protein secretory machinery there has been much interest in elucidating the mechanism whereby this protein is transferred from its site of synthesis within the parasite to its final destination. Current opinion favours a mechanism whereby PfEMP-1 becomes cotranslationally inserted into the endoplasmic reticulum of the parasite and is subsequently transported as an integral part of an erythrocyte cytoplasmic membrane system derived from the parasite. Here we show that the solubility characteristics of this protein during several stages of its transport pathway are inconsistent with this view. Instead we propose that the protein is synthesized as a peripheral membrane protein which only when it arrives at its final destination assumes a transmembrane topology. Even in this state, the extractability of the protein with urea suggest that it is anchored in the membrane by protein-protein rather than by protein-lipid interaction.  相似文献

Biological parameters, such as bone resorption and formation constants, are important variables to achieve optimised hard tissue scaffolds design. To help to understand the modelling process that occurs when a scaffold is implanted it is vital to understand the rather complex bone remodeling process prevalent in native bone. One approach to developing a mathematical model that predicts osteoactivity both in scaffolds, as well as in bone in vivo, is based on a bio-cybernetic vision of basic multicellular unit (BMU) action -. In the case of the model presented in this paper, an additional loop of regulation based on osteocyte activity has been added. This approach has resulted in a four-dimensional system, which shows steady-quasi-cyclic behaviour using a particular range of constants with real biological meaning. The initial findings suggesting that the basic steady-state appears as a torus in multidimensional phase space have been discussed. The existence of this surface in the osteoclasts-osteoblasts-osteocytes-bone subspace indicates that there is a first integral for this dynamic system. Biological and physical interpretation of this integral as a conservative value has been proposed. It is possible to draw an analogy between this conservative value, as a kind of substrate-energy regenerative potential of the bone remodeling system with a molecular nature, to the classical physical value (energy). There are clear indications that there is recovering potential within the BMU that results in a steady operating genetically predominated bone remodeling process. This recovering potential is directed against both mechanical and biomechanical damage to the bone. The current model has credibility when compared to the normal bone remodeling process. However, additional work is required to study a wider range of constants.  相似文献

Brain dialysis is rapidly becoming a routine research method with a wide range of applications. Since 1982 this sampling technique is frequently used as a method to study the in vivo release of endogenous neurotransmitters such as dopamine, noradrenaline, serotonin, acetylcholine and certain amino acids. In this review most of the studies that have appeared in this field, are evaluated. Special attention was given to the question whether the neurotransmitter content in the dialysate is related to neurotransmission. Criteria such as the presence of a high tissue/dialysate concentration ratio, the sensitivity of the transmitters to membrane active compounds and the occurrence of receptor-mediated effects, are discussed. It is concluded that dopamine, noradrenaline and acetylcholine found in the dialysate are directly derived from neurotransmission, whereas the overflow of excitatory amino acid neurotransmitters is related to neurogenic as well as to metabolic events.  相似文献

Gerald Dworkin has argued that it is inconsistent with the proper ends of medicine for a physician to participate in an execution by lethal injection. He does this by proposing a principle by which we are to judge whether an action is consistent with the proper ends of medicine. I argue: (a) that this principle, if valid, does not show that it is inconsistent with the proper ends of medicine for a physician to participate in an execution by lethal injection; and (b) that this principle is not valid, and this is because it mistakenly views the promotion of patient autonomy as one of the proper ends of medicine. Rather, I propose, we should view respect for a patient's autonomy as a constraint on the pursuit of the proper ends of medicine, rather than as one of the proper ends itself. With this revised understanding of the proper ends of medicine, we can conclude that it is inconsistent with the proper ends of medicine for a physician to participate in an execution by lethal injection.  相似文献

Female genital structures with their allied muscles of the haplogyne spider Opopaea fosuma are described. A functional explanation of this system is given, which indicates that cryptic female choice may occur in these spiders: the anterior wall of their spermatheca is strongly sclerotized and possesses a cone-shaped hole in its upper part. A transverse sclerite that serves as muscle attachment bears a nail-like structure and lies in a chitinized area of the anterior wall of the uterus externus. Muscle contraction presses this nail into the hole of the spermatheca. In this way, the uterus externus gets both locked and fixed. Furthermore, as this occurs the copulatory orifice is enlarged and the resulting suction probably leads to previously deposited sperm being drawn from the spermatheca and dumped. This is a common mechanism used by females to influence a male's chances of fathering their offspring in a process known as cryptic female choice.  相似文献

This study demonstrates the effectiveness of using thin‐film electrolytes to enhance protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). The material tested in this study is yttrium‐doped barium cerate‐zirconate (BCZY), which is a representative electrolyte material of PCFCs. The thickness of the electrolyte membrane is as small as 1 µm and designed to minimize ohmic loss in proton transport pathways. Integration of this thin BCZY electrolyte is attempted on a multilayered anode comprised of two‐step supports with bulk nickel‐yttria stabilized zirconia cermet as a base and thin nickel‐BCZY as an anode functional layer atop the base. The compatibility of this support with the deposited thin electrolyte is able to be confirmed from the results of iterated tests. The power of the fabricated cell is greater than 1.1 W cm?2 at 600 °C, which is a record high for PCFCs and is reproducible. In this paper, the origin of this high power is discussed and improvements that could be made to cell performance are further suggested.  相似文献

Less than 50% of Australian amphibians have been recorded as hosts for helminth parasites. Despite developments in parasite community ecology in amphibians elsewhere, Australia lags behind with only two publications on this subject. Reasons advanced for this are that much of the collecting and taxonomic studies were conducted earlier this century before more recent discoveries of host genera and species as well as species complexes in the amphibian fauna. Consequently, there is a need for re-collection of hosts and parasites, and taxonomic revision of the parasites. In addition, as shown in this study, the parasite fauna in Australian amphibians is depauperate. Composition of the parasite fauna was largely dependent on the ecological associations of the host animal species. Frogs were infected with few helminth species and these occurred at low intensity, indicating, as in Europe and North America, that a depauperate fauna is also characteristic of amphibians in tropical regions.  相似文献

There is a great interest in increasing the levels of production of nanocellulose, either by adjusting production systems or by improving the raw material. Despite all the advantages and applications, nanocellulose still has a high cost compared to common fibers and to reverse this scenario the development of new, cheaper, and more efficient means of production is required. The market trend is to have an increase in the mass production of nanocellulose; there is a great expectation of world trade. In this sense, research in this sector is on the rise, because once the cost is not an obstacle to production, this material will have more and more market. Production of the cellulose fibers is determinant for the production of nanocellulose by a hydrolyzing agent with a reasonable yield. This work presents several aspects of this new material, mainly addressing the enzymatic pathway, presenting the hydrolysis conditions such as pH, biomass concentration, enzymatic loading, temperature, and time. Also, the commonly used characterization methods are presented, as well as aspects of the nanocellulose production market.  相似文献

Phosphate insecticide use is increasing as is concomitant human poisoning. Home insecticide bomb as well as agricultural, crop contamination and suicidal exposure are noted.Clinical poisoning may be chronic and severe. It may follow long exposure or short exposure with heavy dosages. Manifestations are those of excessive cholinergic activity.Adequate laboratory means for early, rapid diagnosis and screen testings are available.PAM is a valuable agent for this type of poisoning and is a much more adequate and complete antidote than atropine. It is available (under certain restrictive conditions presently). It is being widely used elsewhere in the world but with limited education and use in this country. Morbidity and mortality continue at a rate that could probably be corrected.Case reports, describing the use of this antidote in our hands, are included.Government and industry responsibility as well as physician education must be more clearly defined in prevention, recognition and treatment in what is often a life threatening situation.  相似文献

As a conclusion, this paper reviews briefly the content of the volume. The wealth of demographic data has not been adequately exploited in anthropology; this is why this publication is valuable in showing attempts to apply demographic data in a variety of anthropological problems. This symposium has explored many interesting points which we recall here. Yet it has also opened up a whole range of further questions on the material presented as well as in this broad field. Several directions of research could be developed, for instance, testing among human populations, over long periods, the ecological thoughts of ecosystems evolving as a cascade of instabilities, rather than a succession of equilibrium states. Let us also recall the pervasive nature of demographic facts in topics such as the energy cycle or the genetic structure and evolution of human populations.  相似文献

There is strong evidence indicating a role for ceramide as a second messenger in processes such as apoptosis, cell growth and differentiation, and cellular responses to stress. Ceramide formation from the hydrolysis of sphingomyelin is considered to be a major pathway of stress-induced ceramide production with magnesium-dependent neutral sphingomyelinase (N-SMase) identified as a prime candidate in this pathway. The recent cloning of a mammalian N-SMase-nSMase2- and generation of nSMase2 knockout/mutant mice have now provided vital tools with which to further study the regulation and roles of this enzyme in both a physiological and pathological context. In the present review, we summarize current knowledge on N-SMase relating this to what is known about nSMase2. We also discuss the future areas of nSMase2 research important for molecular understanding of this enzyme and its physiological roles.  相似文献
