Control of Schistosoma mansoni transmission: strategy for using molluscicides on St. Lucia. International Journal for Parasitology 3: 795–801. A simplified model, based on previous field studies, is described to summarize the transmission of Schistosoma mansoni on the West Indian Island of St. Lucia by the snail Biomphalaria glabrata. Snail populations in static habitats play little part in transmission but form a reservoir of snails which invade flowing habitats in the dry season. These flowing habitat populations account for most of the transmission: preventing their establishment should greatly reduce transmission. The reasons why a single molluscicide treatment of the static habitat populations is unlikely to achieve this result are discussed and an alternative, practical strategy is suggested. An initial intensive mollusciciding followed by surveillance, coupled with focal mollusciciding of surviving snail colonies, should suppress the static habitat populations sufficiently to prevent the invasion of the flowing habitats. This practical strategy should have a reasonable chance of reducing S. mansoni transmission judging by the results of similar control schemes using molluscicides.  相似文献

Upatham E. S. 1973. Location of Biomphalaria glabrata (Say) by miracidia of Schistosoma mansoni Sambon in natural standing and running waters on the West Indian Island of St. Lucia. International Journal of Parasitology3: 289–297. The ability of S. mansoni miracidia to locate B. glabrata in natural ditches and streams was investigated. Miracidia located and infected snails at distances of 9–14 and 97-54 in horizontally in standing and running waters respectively. In running water, no infection occurred above a velocity of 13.11 cmsec. In both types of habitat, infection rates in snails increased with increasing levels of miracidia but decreased as the location of caged snails moved away from the miracidial point of entry. Laboratory experi- ments showed that the number of daughter sporocysts was proportional to the number of miracidia. Judging by the number of daughter sporocysts recovered only a small percentage of miracidia succeeded in locating and penetrating snails (6.8–13-7 % and 1.4–6.2 % in standing and running waters respectively). In standing water, infection may be inhibited by the limited ability of miracidia to move horizontally. In running water, the flow extends significantly the effective scanning capacity of the miracidia, giving them a better chance of coming into contact with snails, which is of importance in the epidemiology of schistosomiasis. Owing to a con- siderable wastage of miracidia and the higher relative efficiency of miracidia at lower densities in detecting snails, control measures such as chemotherapy or provision of safe water supplies designed to lower egg output and reduce contamination may not seriously influence transmission unless S. mansoni egg production or contamination is massively reduced.  相似文献

An experimental molluscicide programme to minimize Schistosoma mansoni transmission has been in operation in a valley on the West Indian island of St. Lucia since September, 1970. Areas infested with the snail Biomphalaria glabrata received an initial intensive treatment. A fortnightly surveillance-treatment programme, with focal mollusciciding of any living snail colonies detected, was then developed. Snails were eliminated from some static habitats but the majority required repeated focal treatments to keep their snail colonies small and localized with low infection rates. No stream colonies were detected in the 1972 and 1973 dry seasons, although such colonies became established in other valleys. The belief that eliminating the stream colonies should have reduced S. mansoni transmission is supported by the apparent absence of cercariae in certain streams and by preliminary medical findings. A detailed cost analysis is included. Based on this experimental programme, a cheaper programme is outlined which should be suitable for use by public health authorities.  相似文献

Densities of Schistosoma mansoni miracidia and cercariae in natural habitats in three St. Lucian valleys were monitored over a 3-year period by exposure of sentinel snails, Biomphalaria glabrata, and a cercariometric technique, supplemented by sampling of field snails. Separate measures for control of S. mansoni transmission were under evaluation in two of the valleys. Sentinel snails became infected sporadically and their infection rates per valley ranged from 0·12% to 4·99%. S. mansoni miracidial inoculation rates ranged from 1 to over 4 per infected sentinel snail. Combined rainfall of more than 3 in on the day before any day of sentinel snail exposure interfered with miracidium-snail interaction. Densities of S. mansoni cercariae ranged from 0·05 to 21 per litre of water sampled. The number of cercariae detected in a habitat by cercariometry was directly proportional to the number of infected field snails. Sentinel snail infection rates exhibited a downward and an upward trend, respectively, in the controlled and uncontrolled areas, although the changes were not significant statistically.  相似文献

Growth curves, calculated for field populations of B. glabrata, were not materially affected by habitat, altitude or season. A mean growth curve was therefore used to estimate the age-frequency distribution of snails in successive field samples. These data permitted the construction of ecological life tables and the estimation of r, the intrinsic rate of natural increase (or decrease) of the different populations. The calculated values of r were inserted in a simple model of unlimited population growth but the resultant curves poorly represented the observed data. A model for unlimited growth was more satisfactory for pond and marsh populations but, apparently, immigration made it less satisfactory for stream and banana drain populations. Nevertheless, r may still be of value in predicting repopulation rates in certain habitats after a mollusciciding which does not kill the entire snail population.  相似文献

The effect of growth rate, body weight, age, and season on ovarian development and maturation was investigated for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) reared in the laboratory over 10 months, for each of two consecutive years, 1978–1980. Cod were also collected from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Scotian Shelf, Georges Bank, the Flemish Cap, and the N.E. Newfoundland Shelf.The state of maturity was recognized by oocyte size. Stage I oocytes did not vary in size with growth rate, season, age, or maturity, while the size of stage II oocytes was positively correlated with maturity and negatively correlated with maximum stage of development achieved. Ovarian wall thickness was positively correlated with age and maturity.The frequency distribution of stage I and II oocytes distinguished the state of maturation, with cod that would mature by the next spawning season having a minimum of 20% (x? = 42%) of their oocytes at stage II or greater level of development.Maturing 3-yr-old cod had greater life specific growth rates than immature 3-yr-olds, but growth rates during the third year itself were not significantly different. A hypothesis of a three-part density-dependent mechanism controlling fecundity is postulated. Future reductions in partial recruitment and total fecundity are predicted for the Gulf of St. Lawrence cod stock based on calculated growth rates for Gulf cod in 1979.  相似文献

The genetic control of resistance or susceptibility to Trichomonas vaginalis infection has been studied in mice of various strains infected by different routes. BALBc and DBA2 female mice appear to be highly susceptible to intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, or intravaginal infection by T. vaginalis. By contrast, female mice on A background are resistant to T. vaginalis infection via any route. C57BL6 and C3H female mice display intermediate levels of resistance following intraperitoneal or subcutaneous inoculum, whereas they display high levels of resistance to intravaginal infection. On the other hand, susceptibility or resistance to T. vaginalis infection appears to be influenced by the host sex, since males inoculated subcutaneously display much higher levels of resistance than females of the same strain. Lastly, the age of the host seems to play an important role in determining the course of infection. Susceptibility to T. vaginalis decreases with age, being maximal at 3–4 weeks and minimal at 40–42 weeks. All together these results suggest that resistance or susceptibility to T. vaginalis infection is regulated by genes mapping outside the major histocompatibility complex (H-2 in the mouse), whose activity is modulated by the anatomic site first coming into contact with the protozoon, the sex, and the age of the recipient host.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption, locomotory activity and, in some cases, osmoregulatory responses of different populations of Palaemon adspersus (Rathke) and Pomatoschistus microps (Krøyer) from the Isefjord (S 19‰) and Karrebaek Fjord (S 12‰) in Denmark and the Barther Bodden (S 6‰) in the G.D.R. to short-term salinity fluctuations, and after long-term adaptation, were tested. The same tests were performed on populations of Gasterosteus aculeatus (L.), Palaemonetes varions (Leach) (both from Barther Bodden, G.D.R.) and Palaemon elegans (Rathke) (Black Sea, Bulgaria, S 18‰). The steady-state experiments showed that the standard metabolic rates of P. adspersus and Pomatoschistus microps reach their lowest levels at mean biotope salinities at both 10 and 20°C. In contrast, the routine metabolic rates of both species are independent of salinity in the ecological salinity range.All Palaemon adspersus and Pomatoschistus microps populations responded to sudden changes in salinity with increased locomotory activity and respiration regardless of the direction of stressing. Metabolic adaptation in these euryhaline species, which is not synchronous with osmotic readjustment, takes from 5 to 12 h, depending on the salinity gradient.The polystenohaline Palaemon elegans from the Black Sea and the holeuryhaline Palaemonetes varians from the Barther Bodden exhibit similar short adaptation times (≈ 2 h) to identical salinity gradients but in different salinity zones.  相似文献

The wide-ranging, cumulative, negative effects of anthropogenic disturbance, including habitat degradation, exotic species, and hunting, on native wildlife has been well documented across a range of habitats worldwide with carnivores potentially being the most vulnerable due to their more extinction prone characteristics. Investigating the effects of anthropogenic pressures on sympatric carnivores is needed to improve our ability to develop targeted, effective management plans for carnivore conservation worldwide. Utilizing photographic, line-transect, and habitat sampling, as well as landscape analyses and village-based bushmeat hunting surveys, we provide the first investigation of how multiple forms of habitat degradation (fragmentation, exotic carnivores, human encroachment, and hunting) affect carnivore occupancy across Madagascar’s largest protected area: the Masoala-Makira landscape. We found that as degradation increased, native carnivore occupancy and encounter rates decreased while exotic carnivore occupancy and encounter rates increased. Feral cats (Felis species) and domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) had higher occupancy than half of the native carnivore species across Madagascar’s largest protected landscape. Bird and small mammal encounter rates were negatively associated with exotic carnivore occupancy, but positively associated with the occupancy of four native carnivore species. Spotted fanaloka (Fossa fossana) occupancy was constrained by the presence of exotic feral cats and exotic small Indian civet (Viverricula indica). Hunting was intense across the four study sites where hunting was studied, with the highest rates for the small Indian civet (x¯ = 90 individuals consumed/year), the ring-tailed vontsira (Galidia elegans) (x¯ = 58 consumed/year), and the fosa (Cryptoprocta ferox) (x¯ = 31 consumed/year). Our modeling results suggest hunters target intact forest where carnivore occupancy, abundance, and species richness, are highest. These various anthropogenic pressures and their effects on carnivore populations, especially increases in exotic carnivores and hunting, have wide-ranging, global implications and demand effective management plans to target the influx of exotic carnivores and unsustainable hunting that is affecting carnivore populations across Madagascar and worldwide.  相似文献

1. Few studies have directly addressed the role played by parasites in the structure and function of ecosystems. Parasites influence the behaviour, reproduction and overall fitness of their hosts, but have been usually overlooked in community and ecosystem‐level studies. We investigated the effects of trematode parasites on snail–periphyton interactions. 2. Physa  acuta (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) snails infected with the trematode Posthodiplostomum minimum (often >30% of within‐shell biomass) grazed more rapidly than uninfected snails. Trematode effects on snail grazing indirectly affected the standing stock and community structure of periphyton. Populations of snails with 50% infected individuals reduced algal biomass by 20% more than populations with lesser (10% or 0%) infection rates. 3. The alga Cladophora glomerata dominated periphyton communities grazed by snail populations with 50% infection rates, whereas diatoms and blue–green algal taxa dominated when grazed by snail populations with lower infection rates. 4. Thus, trematodes indirectly affected periphyton communities by altering host snail behaviour, a trait‐mediated indirect effect. These results indicate that trematodes can indirectly influence benthic community structure beyond simple population fitness, with possible related effects on ecosystem function.  相似文献

The Assimineidae are a family of amphibious microgastropods that can be mostly found in estuaries and mangroves in South Africa. These snails often occur in great numbers and are ecologically important to the St Lucia Estuary, which forms a crucial part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Genetic and shell morphometric analyses were conducted on individuals collected from nine localities distributed from the northern lake regions to the southern lake and the mouth of the St Lucia estuarine lake. Mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear (28S) DNA was used to construct Bayesian Inference, Neighbour-joining, Maximum Parsimony and Maximum Likelihood trees. Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis were performed on standard shell parameter data. Results indicate that two different taxa are present in St Lucia. The taxon comprising individuals from the South Lake and St Lucia Estuary Mouth is identified as Assiminea cf. capensis Bartsch, in accordance with the latest taxonomic consensus. The taxon comprising assimineid individuals from False Bay, North Lake and South Lake, is here tentatively named “Assiminea” aff. capensis (Sowerby). These two taxa exhibit patterns of spatial overlap that appear to vary depending on environmental parameters, particularly salinity. The need to resolve the complex taxonomy of assimineids is highlighted.  相似文献

We compared the haemosporidian parasite faunas (Plasmodium and Haemoproteus) of small land birds on the islands of St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenada in the southern Lesser Antilles. The islands differ in distance from the South American source of colonists, proximity to each other, and similarity of their avifaunas. On each island, we obtained 419–572 blood samples from 22–25 of the 34–41 resident species. We detected parasite infection by PCR and identified parasite lineages by sequencing a portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Parasite prevalence varied from 31% on St Lucia to 22% on St Vincent and 18% on Grenada. Abundant parasite lineages differed between the three islands in spite of the similarity in host species. As in other studies, the geographic distributions of the individual parasite lineages varied widely between local endemism and broad distribution within the West Indies, including cases of long‐distance disjunction. St Vincent was unusual in the near absence of Plasmodium parasites, which accorded with low numbers of suitable mosquito vectors reported from the island. Parasites on St Vincent also tended to be host specialists compared to those on St Lucia and Grenada. Similarity in parasite assemblages among the three islands varied in parallel with host assemblage similarity (but not similarity of infected hosts) and with geographic proximity. Parasite prevalence increased with host abundance on both St Lucia and St Vincent, but not on Grenada; prevalence did not vary between endemic and more widespread host species. In addition, the endemic host species harbored parasites that were recovered from a variety of non‐endemic species as well. These results support the individualistic nature of haemosporidian parasite assemblages in evolutionarily independent host populations.  相似文献

Seasonal density fluctuations of Bulinus nasutus populations with accompanying Schistosoma haematobium infection rates in relation to rainfall and habitat water volumes were studied at Ukiriguru, Mwanza, Tanzania. Alongside the snail investigations, 50 school children initially negative for urinary schistosomiasis were examined regularly to determine seasonal incidence rates for the infection. Of the 17,646 B. nasutus collected in 2 years, 156 (0.88%) were found shedding cercariae. Snail populations fluctuated seasonally as influenced by rainfall through its effects on habitat water volume. Monthly snail infection rates ranged from 0.09% to 3.19% and were highest in February and March, at the time of the short dry period. Monthly incidence of S. haematobium in school children ranged between 2.6% and 12.5%, being highest in April and May. There was a significant linear association between monthly snail infection rates and S. haematobium incidence rates in school children (r2s = 0.65 in 1982/83; r2s = 0.87 in 1983/84) suggesting that the maximum transmission period for urinary schistosomiasis in the area occurs during the short dry period, sometime in February/March so that most of the infections in the community would be detected in April/May.  相似文献

The food conversion efficiency of Fundulus heteroclitus (L.) was measured in terms of calories and nitrogen for three diets: Palaemonetes sp., Nereis sp., and Uca pugnax. Fish were allowed to feed ad libitum for 30–60 min each day. Growth, ingestion, egestion, and excretion were measured for fish fed each diet. The growth rates of Fundulus heteroclitus fed two of the single item diets of invertebrates were higher than growth rates previously estimated for mummichogs from the natural population in Canary Creek marsh. In comparison with other fish species, F. heteroclitus was found to have a higher than average assimilation efficiency (X? = 87% for all three diets) and a lower than average gross growth efficiency (≈12% for two of the diets). Metabolic costs accounted for an average of 69% of ingested energy. Excretion rates were also large, with excretion accounting for more energy than egestion in two of the three diets.  相似文献

Field studies on the transmission of the human liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, in northeast Thailand: population changes of the snail intermediate host. International Journal for Parasitology16: 545–552. A natural population of Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos, snail vector of the human liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini was sampled for 3 years in a shallow reservoir in Khon Kaen Province, northeast Thailand. During the study period, the habitat experienced a 17-month drought followed by a surging flood. Snails suffered over 90% mortality during drying of the reservoir but died at an average rate of only 5% per month during aestivation. When water returned they migrated to new edge habitats, apparently on floating debris, and reproduced. Peaks in reproduction occurred following spring rains and after the fall monsoon flooding subsided. Normally, two generations are produced per year in seasonal habitats. The prevalence of O. viverrini infection averaged 0.11 % in adult snails over 8 mm in length; smaller snails were not infected.Control of opisthorchiasis through snail control does not appear practical because of the widespread distribution of the snails, their ability to survive in very unstable habitats, and for other reasons concerned with the existence of the fish host between snail and human hosts.  相似文献

Partial acid hydrolyzates of the extracellular polysaccharide from Porphyridiunm cruentum yield three disaccharides and two uronic acids. These constitute all of the uronic acid in the polymer. The novel disaccharides are 3-O-(α-D-glucopyranosyl- uronic acid)-L-galactose, 3-O-(2-O-methyl-ca-glucopyranosyluronic acid)-D- galactose, and 3-0-(2-0-methyl-a-D-glucopyranosyluronic acid)-D-glucose. The polyanion of high molecular weight contains D- and L-galactose, xylose, D-glucose, D-glucuronic acid and 2-O-methyl-D-glucuronic acid, and sulfate in molar ratio (relative to D-glucose) of 2.12:2.42:1.00:1.22:2.61. Preliminary periodate-oxidation studies suggest that the hexose and uronic acids are joined to other residues by ( 1→3) glycosidic linkages. Ewes of three exotic breeds (Florida Native, Barbados Blackbelly and St. Croix) showed no periparturient rise in fecal egg counts (PPR) when housed from late fall through lambing and weaning. Domestic breed ewes (Rambouillet and Finn-Dorset × Rambouillet) showed a pronounced PPR 6–7 weeks post-lambing while St. Croix × domestic ewes showed an intermediate PPR under similar conditions. There was no PPR in non-lambing ewes.In a second experiment, breed differences in the PPR were not as pronounced when ewes were allowed to graze a contaminated pasture after lambing. Florida Native, St. Croix and 34 St. Croix × 14 domestic showed lower PPRs than the remaining breeds (Barbados Blackbelly, F1 hybrids of exotic and domestic breeds and domestic ewes), but the magnitude of the PPR was generally small in all breeds. No relationship was observed between hemoglobin genotype and PPR in either experiment.It was concluded that a low or absent PPR is an important manifestation of breed resistance in exotic ewes and that this may be useful as a marker for breeding parasite-resistant sheep.  相似文献

A mouse t-complex-specific DNA probe was used to determine the ratio of t-carrying and (+)-carrying sperm in epididymal, vas deferens, and postejaculatory sperm cell populations from heterozygous (+t) mice with transmission ratios of greater than 95%. No detectable degeneration of (+)-carrying sperm was observed. In this respect, mouse t haplotypes differ from Drosophila melanogaster SD chromosomes. High transmission of t haplotypes must be a consequence of differential transport and/or differential sperm function during the fertilization process itself.  相似文献

Mesopodopsis africana is an important mysid in southern African coastal zooplankton and a key species in the St Lucia estuarine lake, which is currently undergoing severe desiccation owing to freshwater deprivation. M. africana populations through much of the system are consequently under severe environmental stress. This study investigates the grazing dynamics of this mysid species, in relation to autotrophic food availability and other environmental constraints in two contrasting areas of the St Lucia Estuary, Charters Creek, heavily affected by the desiccation process and the Mouth, virtually under unchanged conditions. Gut evacuation experiments were conducted once each during the day and the night. Evacuation rates were consistently higher during the night, ranging from 0.27 to 0.33 h-1 at Charters Creek and from 1.13 to 1.24 h-1 at the Mouth. Ingestion rates were, therefore, higher at the Mouth resulting in population grazing impacts of 2.5% of the total microalgal biomass, while the grazing impact at Charters Creek was only 0.5%. The spatial variation in ingestion rates could be attributed to seasonal differences in gut evacuation rates, differences in the mean size of mysids used, or the physicochemical conditions present at the two stations. It is suggested that mysid populations at Charters Creek are predominantly driven by bottom-up forces, initiated by the harsh environmental conditions. Despite the lower ingestion rates exhibited at Charters Creek, results indicate that these mysids are capable of meeting all their energetic requirements from a microalgal diet alone, although they may also utilise a heterotrophic diet.  相似文献

Free monosaccharides can be used for direct glycosylation of Spheron, a spherical macroporous hydroxyyalkyl methacrylate-ethylene dimethacrylate copolymer, in a reaction that proceeds at room temperature in dioxane medium under catalysis of dry HCl or BF3. Derivatives of L-fucose, D-galactose, D-glucose, D-mannose, N-acetyl-D-galactosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine thus prepared from Spheron beads have been shown to be efficient affinity carriers in isolation of lectins from seeds of Canavalia ensiformis D.C. (concanavalin A), Dolichos biflorus L., Glycine soja (L.) Sieb. et Zucc., Lens esculenta Moench, Ricinus communis L., Ulex europaeus L. and from albumin glands of the garden snail Helix pomatia L.  相似文献
