We investigated the factors controlling the relative abundancesof two Daphnia species, D.pulex and D.laevis, in a small Wisconsinpond. D.pulex was the dominant Daphnia species in fall 1977and summer-fall 1978; D.laevis was the only Daphnia speciespresent in summer 1979. The abundance of D.laevis was positivelycorrelated with the abundance of the notonectid, Buenoa confusa.In predation trials, notonectides exhibited a distinct preferencefor D.pulex over similarly-sized D.laevis, but Chaoborus larvaefed at similar rates on both Daphnia species. Behavioral observationsrevealed that Buenoa adults were much less efficient at capturingD.laevis than D.pulex. Quantitative results of these predationtrials were combined with estimates of predator and prey densityand distribution to evaluate the effect of predation on thedaphnid populations. The effect of predation varied throughtime and microhabitat, and only infrequently could predationaccount for total prey mortality. D.laevis was most abundantat times and in places where Buenoa predation was most intense.Competition experiments illustrated the competitive superiorityof D.pulex over D.laevis. D.pulex was able to competitivelyexclude D.laevis in long term experiments, and D.pulex's fecunditywas higher than that of D.laevis in shorter experiments. Inlong-term experiments, Chaoborus larvae at natural densitieswere able to keep both Daphnia species at low, constant levelsand neither species clearly dominated when Chaoborus was present.The relative abundances of D.pulex and D.laevis were controlledby a complex of biotic and abiotic factors. Pond depth and predatordensity determined the intensity of predation on daphnid populations.When notonectid predation was intense, D.laevis dominated; whenthe intensity of predation by notonectids was low, D.pulex dominateddue to its superior competitive abilities. The role of ambient calcium concentrations on survival, moulting,growth and egg production was assessed in the cladoceran Daphniamagna. A threshold for survival was found in the range 0.1–0.5mg Ca l–1, even when ionic strength of the medium waskept constant. Accumulated length and length specific dry weightwas retarded at low Ca (0.5–1.0 mg Ca l–1) at foodconcentrations above incipient limiting level. For lower foodlevels, the effect of Ca on growth was less clear. The effectof low Ca on growth rate was most manifest during the firstdays after hatching, reflecting the higher Ca demands of theearly juveniles. Age-specific egg production was strongly reducedat Ca concentrations <10 mg Ca l–1. This was partlyan indirect effect of reduced growth rates, but could also bean effect of higher energetic costs associated with Ca uptakein a Ca-poor medium. The high Ca demands in D.magna may notbe representative of other Daphnia species. Nevertheless, highspecific Ca content seems to be a common property of Daphniaspp. and Ca deficiency could be a major determinant of speciessuccess and community structure among crustacean zooplankton;it also puts constraints on carbon sequestration in the pelagicfood web of softwater lakes.  相似文献

Evidence for extensive interspecific hybridization among speciesof the genus Daphnia has been accumulating on a global scale.Although there is evidence for limited gene flow between taxavia hybridization, many species still maintain discrete morphologicaland molecular characteristics. We studied temporal and spatialpatterns of sexual reproduction within the Daphnia galeata–hyalina–cucullatahybrid species complex in a lake (Plußsee), located innorthern Germany. Allozyme electrophoresis allowed us to trackseasonal changes in taxon composition as well as the quantificationof back-crosses. Sexually-reproducing animals (ephippial femalesand males) were mainly found in autumn. The simultaneous presenceof sexual morphs of D. galeata and D. galeata x hyalina withthe dominant D. hyalina taxa makes recent hybridization, aswell as back-crossing, plausible. Males and ephippial femalesof D. hyalina were not back-crossed as were the parthenogeneticfemales. The low number of sexual clones of the hybrid D. galeatax hyalina might reflect its reduced fertility, although thesefew clones were detected in high densities. Only hybrid-clonesthat had a back-cross genotype (towards D. hyalina) exhibitedephippial females and males. This indicates that male and ephippialfemale production within the Daphnia taxa is not random, whichmight increase the chance for the parental Daphnia species toremain distinct.  相似文献

We analysed dynamics and structure of a Daphnia galeata populationprior to and during a midsummer decline of this species in Bautzenreservoir (Saxony, Germany). Patterns of juvenile and adultmortality were determined by combining field data with laboratoryestimates of juvenile growth. After establishing high densities,fecundity and recruitment of D.galeata markedly decreased, whereassize at maturity was high. Immediately before the populationdecline, adult mortality increased and remained high even afterthe decline, whereas juvenile mortality was low during the wholeinvestigation period, and virtually absent after the decline.We conclude that the succession of events leading to a midsummerdecline of Daphnia is as follows. (i) A quick increase in Daphniaabundance leads to the formation of a strong ‘peak cohort’of about the same age. (ii) During the clear-water phase, foodconditions deteriorate, fecundity declines and hence, recruitmentis low. Juvenile mortality during this period is low, but present.(iii) Adult mortality increases when the ‘peak-cohort’reaches its mean life-span, which is reduced due to interactionsbetween age-specific and starvation-induced mortality. At thispoint, Daphnia population dynamics can no longer be explainedwithout the onset of size-selective predation. Hence, the timingbetween enhanced mortality due to senescence on the one handand predation on the other hand, both directed towards adultdaphnids, may be decisive for the initiation of a midsummerdecline of Daphnia.  相似文献

Four species of cyclomorphic Daphnia (D.pulex, D.galeata mendotae,D.retrocurva, D.lumholtzi) were exposed to the insecticide carbarylfor a short term (8–4 h) from the final embryonic stageto the first instar. Daphnia pulex formed neckteeth, and theremaining three Daphnia species developed high helmets and longtailspines. The results suggest that the development of suchprotuberant structures (anti-predator morphologies) in responseto the insecticide exposure is a general phenomenon in Daphnia,and that stimuli on the nervous system of Daphnia may inducethe morphological changes, which originally evolved as a responseto predator kairomone. Data on two co-existing Daphnia species, D.cucullata (G.O.Sars)and D.hyalina (Leydig), from three neighboring and interconnectedlakes in northern Poland, revealed an extremely confined rangeof population density fluctuations throughout summer in eachof the two species in each of the three lakes, with D.cucullatabeing an order of magnitude more abundant than D.hyalina (meanof 11.5 ind. l–1 for D.cucullata and 1.1 ind. l–1for D.hyalina with 95% confidence limits of ±2.5 and±0.5 ind. l–1, respectively), in spite of markedlychanging fecundity. There was no apparent phase of decline orincrease that could be related to the distinct phases of lowor high fecundity resulting from different food levels. Analysisof the gut contents of roach (Rutilus rutilus), the dominantplanktivore in the three lakes, revealed identical selectivityfor each of the two Daphnia species, suggesting that the lowerdensity of the D.hyalina population was compensated for by thegreater conspicuousness of individuals of this species. It isconcluded that the population density of these Daphnia speciesremains far below the carrying capacity of the habitat and doesnot depend on food levels. Food availability merely sets therate of population increase, while the actual population densityin the lakes studied reflects the species' vulnerability topredation by planktivorous fish.  相似文献

In Lake Washington, juvenile sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka)strongly prefer Daphnia over other prey, switching uniformlyto Daphnia when the threshold abundance of 0.4 Daphnia L–1is achieved. Using long-term Lake Washington data (1978–2001)and fry trap data (1992–2001) from a major tributary,we examined the following: (i) factors that predict Daphniapulicaria and Daphnia thorata increase to this threshold "switching"abundance, (ii) trends in Daphnia dynamics that may affect sockeyeforaging and (iii) temporal correspondence of Daphnia increaseand fry arrival. The winter abundance of D. pulicaria, in combinationwith basic parameters of spring conditions, was an importantpredictor of the date of D. pulicaria spring increase, indicatinggreater reliance on pelagic population dynamics (versus diapausehatch) than D. thorata exhibited. In addition, D. pulicariawas a more consistent prey than D. thorata, the latter exhibitinglarger population fluctuations. Thus, recently increasing D.thorata prominence could decrease diet consistency for sockeyefry. Additionally, the timing of sockeye arrival to Lake Washingtonand Daphnia’s increase to the switching threshold hasbecome less concordant, so that fry in recent years have hadto rely upon less profitable prey for longer periods. Long-termtrends and species-specific differences in Daphnia phenologymay affect fry through altering diet composition, with additionalimplications for other zooplankton withstanding greater predationpressure in Daphnia’s absence. Recent decades of warmingin Lake Washington are consistent with the warming of lakesworldwide, and complex phenological responses such as thosereported here may be common as the climate continues to change.  相似文献

We conducted field observations on 13 eutrophic Wisconsin lakesdominated by either the larger bodied Daphnia pulicaria or thesmaller bodied Daphnia galeata mendotae. While Daphnia numericaldensities were not significantly different between groups oflakes, pulicaria lakes had much higher Daphnia biomasses andfiltration potentials than galeata lakes. Although we foundsignificant differences in chlorophyll (Chl) a between bothgroups of lakes during June, on a seasonal basis populationsof different sized Daphnia were not associated with significantdifferences in Chl a. Filtration potential per se was the majordeterminant of Chl a, regardless of which Daphnia species dominated.However, in pulicaria lakes, the clear-water phase started earlier,lasted longer, and was usually characterized by greater Secchidisc readings than in galeata lakes. For large blue-green algaesuch as Aphanizomenon, D.pulicaria appeared to delay bloom conditions,but ultimately did not prevent the alga from growing. Our resultssuggest that high densities of large-sized Daphnia are a desirablegoal of biomanipulation because they can attain filtration potentialshigh enough to increase summer water clarity in eutrophic lakes.  相似文献

Seasonal abundance as total biomass and specific densities ofthe main herbivorous zooplankton (>60 µm) in hypertrophicHartbeespoort Dam from 1981 to 1983 are described. After springzooplankton biomass maxima each year there followed a mid-summerdecline in the Daphnia population and a shift to a smaller bodiedcladoceran community dominated by Ceriodaphnia concomitant witha change from largely edible phytoplankton species to abundantcolonial Microcystis. In situ community grazing rates were measuredthroughout 1983 using a 14C-labelled unicellular alga. Integratedcommunity grazing rates measured in the aerobic water columnwere highest in December (260.2%/day) when Daphnia was abundantand the edible component of the phytoplankton was diminishing.Lowest integrated community grazing rates occurred in January–February(19.8–35.3%/day) and July (28.3%/day) when the phytoplanktonwas composed almost entirely of Microcysris, and Ceriodaphniadominated the zooplankton community whilst food availabilitywas low. Feeding in Ceriodaphnia was not hindered by abundantlarge Microcysris colonies; total biomass specific grazing ratewas high when Ceriodaphnia dominated and low when Daphnia dominatedthe zoo-plankton community. Results indicate that in hypertrophicconditions it is unlikely that large filter-feeders such asDaphnia are able to retard or limit the development of Cyanophyceaeblooms by high grazing pressure.  相似文献

Amelt solidification technique has been developed to obtain sustained-release waxy beads of flurbiprofen. Low glass transition temperature (t g) and shear-induced crystallization of flurbiprofen made it a suitable candidate for melt solidification technique. The process involved emulsification and solidification of flurbiprofen-cetyl alcohol melt at significantly low temperature (5°C). The effect of variables, namely, the amount of cetyl alcohol and the speed of agitation, was studied using 32 factorial design. The technique and the beads were evaluated on the basis of process and desired yield, surface topography, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), particle size distribution, crushing strength, and drug release. Average values for process and desired yields were 97% wt/wt and 26% wt/wt, respectively. No interaction was observed between drug and excipient. Multiple regression analysis was carried out, and response surfaces were obtained. A curvilinear relationship was observed between percentage of desired yield and the amount of cetyl alcohol. Linear decrease in crushing strength was observed with increase in the amount of cetyl alcohol. Drug released from the beads followed zero order kinetics. Burst release was shown to a greater extent in beads containing a lower amount of cetyl alcohol. Response surfaces of time required for certain percentage of drug (t D%) showed that after critical concentration of about 20% of cetyl alcohol (400 mg/batch), no significant release retardant effect was observed.  相似文献

We conducted grazing experiments to test whether larger-bodiedDaphnia pulicaria have a different effect from smaller-bodiedDaphnia galeata mendotae on the composition of summer algalassemblages in eutrophic lakes. Three separate cubitainer experimentswere run for 5 days in a replicated factorial design utilizingtwo algal community types and the two Daphnia species. Inorganicphosphorus and nitrogen were added to prevent nutrient limitationof the algae. Both edible and inedible size fractions of chlorophylla increased in cubitainers without Daphnia spp. Grazer additionusually resulted in a reduction in edible chlorophyll; reductionswere greater in D.pulicaria cubitainers. Grazing by Daphniaspp. on presumed inedible chlorophyll was variable. Algal sizewas not always a good predictor of grazeability. The resultsof this study indicate that D.pulicaria, because of its greaterfiltration potential and ability to ingest larger particles,provides a stronger control on inedible-sized algae when comparedto equal numerical densities of D.g.mendotae. However, Aphanizomenonincreased as a response to heavy grazing pressure by D.pulicariaon other algal species. This suggests that biomanipulation effortsthat promote large-bodied Daphnia may not produce desirableresults if nutrient inputs remain high.  相似文献

Can phaeopigments be used as markers for Daphnia grazing in Lake Constance?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The formation of chlorophyll a degradation products was measuredwith natural phytoplankton from Lake Constance and Daphnia magnaand native Daphnia as grazers in grazing experiments duringspring bloom conditions using high-pressure liquid chromatography(HPLC). Chlorophyll a start concentrations were between 1.2and 16.3 µg l–1; phaeopigment weights constituted5% of chlorophyll a weight. Only phaeophorbide a was a markerfor Daphnia grazing; concentrations of other phaeopigments (phaeophytina, chlorophyllide a and two unidentified phaeopigments) didnot increase during Daphnia grazing. Conversion efficiencies(chlorophyll a to phaeophorbide a) were between 0 and 43% ona weight basis, and between 0 and 65% on a molar basis. Conversionefficiencies were highest at high grazer density (40 Daphnial–1) and after a 24 h exposure time. Grazing by microzooplanktonprobably led to the formation of the two unidentified phaeopigments.In Lake Constance, Daphnia density was significantly positivelycorrelated with the phaeophorbide a/chlorophyll a ratio whenit was <5000 Daphnia m–3. However, when higher Daphniadensities were included in calculations, then Daphnia densitywas positively, but insignificantly, correlated with the phaeophorbidea/chlorophyll a ratio. This suggests that when the level offood per Daphnia is low, then grazing is more efficient withless production of phaeophorbide a and a higher production ofcolourless products.  相似文献

Different species of Daphnia show differences in their swimmingbehavior under different environmental conditions. We measuredthe three-dimensional swimming behavior of individual adultfemale Daphnia in the mesocosm-scale Plön plankton towers(6400 1) and in small (183 ml) observation chambers. Speed,sinking rate and turning angle were chosen as optimal variablesfor describing the free-swimming animals of four species. Speed,sinking rate and turning angle show uniformity of variance amongtreatments, and they are relatively independent. Light leveland food level strongly affected swimming behavior. Light andfood effects tended to be independent, although there were twoinstances of synergism (out of 12 possible interactions). Eachof the four species (one clone per species) showed a uniqueresponse to food and light, which may reflect the diverse environmentalorigin of each clone. Swimming behavior was consistently differentbetween the small-scale (183 ml) observation chamber and themesocosm-scale (6400 1) plankton tower, suggesting that containersize affects swimming behavior: in the smaller chamber, Daphnia,regardless of species, swam slower, sank slower and tended tomove in straighter paths.  相似文献

To gain better insight into the importance of predator and resourcecontrol in New Zealand lakes we surveyed the late summer trophicstructure of 25 shallow South Island lakes with contrastingnutrient levels (6–603 µg TP l–1) and fishdensities. Total catch of fish per net (CPUE) in multi-meshgillnets placed in the open water and the littoral zones waspositively related with the nutrient level. Trout CPUE was negativelycorrelated with total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN).Zooplankton seemed largely influenced by fish, as high fishCPUE coincided with low zooplankton and Daphnia biomass, lowaverage weight of cladocerans, low contribution of Daphnia tototal cladoceran biomass, low ratio of calanoids to total copepodbiomass and low ratio of zooplankton biomass to phytoplanktonbiomass. However, chlorophyll a was only slightly negativelyrelated to Daphnia biomass and not to zooplankton biomass ina multiple regression that included TN and TP. Ciliate abundancewas positively related to chlorophyll a and negatively to Daphniabiomass, but not to total zooplankton biomass, while no relationshipswere found between heterotrophic nanoflagellates and zooplankton.The relationships between fish abundance and nutrients and fishabundance and zooplankton:phytoplankton ratio and between chlorophylla and TP largely followed the pattern obtained for 42 northtemperate Danish lakes. We conclude that fish, including trout,have a major effect on the zooplankton community structure andbiomass in the pelagial of the shallow oligotrophic to slightlyeutrophic New Zealand lakes, but that the cascading effectson phytoplankton and protist are apparently modest.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Daphnia species (D.cucullata, D.ambigua,D.galeata) in two small, productive lakes were studied and experimentswith field enclosures were carried out to elucidate the ecologicalniches of the introduced, alien species D.ambigua. Daphnia ambiguocoexisted temporally with the similarly sized D.cucullata, butlived in deeper water. Although both species had the same clutchsizes, similar proportions of ovigerous females, and death rates.D.cucullata was nurnerically dominant over D.ambigua. This suggeststhat the observed difference in abundance is simply a resultof the slower population growth rates of D.ambigua at lowertemperatures in greater depths. The experiments with field enclosuresshowed that when D.culcullata and D.ambigua were forced to livein the same layer of water, D.ambigua was numerically dominantover D.culullata both in the enclosures with and without fish.As the difference between the abundances of the two speciesdecreased in the enclosure with fish, D.cucullata seems to bebetter protected against fish predation than D.ambigua. In theenclosures without fish, D.ambigua and D.cucullata were numericallysurpassed by the larger species D.galeara. Life-long somatic growth and egg production responses of Daphniabarbata, Daphnia gibba, Daphnia laevis, Daphnia pulex, Moinamicrura and Diaphanosoma excisum were examined in relation todifferent food and suspended sediment levels, in factorial experimentsat 20°C. Food treatments involved additions of 0, 100, 500and 2500 µg C l–1 of Selenastrum to 20 µmfiltered water, generally from source lakes. These food levelswere tested at two suspended sediment levels in all species,viz. (i) natural source-lake nephelometric turbidities of 7–65nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) ({small tilde}10–70mg l–1 TSS) and (ii) {small tilde}3- to 4-fold enrichmentof natural levels (8-fold in D.excisum). A third sediment-freetreatment was tested in all species of Daphnia other than D.gibba.Growth in body length and reproductive output were assesseddaily for individual animals. Main and interactive effects offood and sediment on growth were assessed at selected ages fromday 3 through subsequent life using analysis of variance (ANOVA).Strong and highly significant positive food effects were apparentat all ages in all species examined, with the curious exceptionof D.excisum. The onset of maturity and fecundity were alsopositively related to food level. Sediment effects on growth,age of maturity and fecundity were variable, but tended to bemuch weaker than food effects. Both stimulatory (positive, especiallyat low food levels) and inhibitory (negative) effects of sedimenton growth were apparent, both between and within species. Performancein sediment-free water was very poor, except in D.pulex. Food-sedimentinteraction effects were variable. Generally, turbidwater specieswere influenced less adversely by sediment than clear-waterspecies, indicating the existence of environmentally appropriateadaptive responses. Overall, the findings indicate that lightlimitation of algal resources by suspended sediments, ratherthan the condition of high turbidity per se, is responsiblefor the apparently negative impact of suspended sediments frequentlyobserved on natural populations of cladoceran zooplankters.  相似文献

Daphnia magna were reared in environments with different concentrationsof food and dissolved oxygen, and their life history characteristicsand filter-screen areas were analyzed. Both low food concentrationand low oxygen concentration degraded Daphnia fitness (as measuredby individual growth and reproduction), and synergism was detectedstatistically for the effects of the two factors together. Lowfood concentration induced the development of large filter screensin Daphnia, but this development was suppressed by low oxygenconcentration, suggesting that low oxygen concentration reducesthe filtering rate of Daphnia in a food-limited environment.Therefore, energy uptake by Daphnia seems to be reduced by foodshortages and oxygen deficiencies jointly, and this reductionin energy uptake may be a possible mechanism causing the synergisticeffects of the two environmental stresses on the life historyof Daphnia.  相似文献

Intact phytoplankton and microzooplankton communities from eutrophicStar Lake were incubated for 4 days with and without Daphniapulex, Daphnia galeaia mendotae, or a natural assemblage ofDaphnia species. They were sampled at the onset and terminationof the experiment for bacterial, phytoplankton, ciliate, rotifer,copepod and cladoceran densities. The cladocerans had variedeffects on the rotifers, ranging from significant suppressionof most rotifer species (Keratella cochlearis, Polyarthra remata,Keratella crassa) in the D.pulex jars, to the suppression ofone (K.crassa) or no species in the D.galeata mendotae and StarLake Daphnia assemblage jars, respectively. Small ciliates (<30µm, longest dimension), such as Strobilidium sp. and Pseudo-cyclidiumsp., were adversely affected by most of the cladoceran treatments,while several larger ciliates (>81 µm) were unaffectedin all such treatments. We analysed the temporal pattern of a Daphnia galeata populationand the development of the age-0 Ash community in a long-termbiomanipulated lake (Bautzen reservoir, Germany) during springand early summer of two successive years. In Bautzen reservoir,the age-0 Rsh-Daphnia interaction is a key process within thefood web due to the low abundance of adult zooplanktivorousfish. Daily consumption of daphnids by age-0 fish, as estimatedby a bioenergetics model, was compared to daily mortality ratesof daphnids. In addition, we estimated life history parametersof Daphnia that may indicate predation impact by fish. A midsummerdecline of daphnids occurred only in July of 1996, whereas in1995 the Daphnia biomass remained >4 mg wet weight 1–1for the entire summer. The percentage of total Daphnia mortalitydue to fish predation before the onset of the midsummer declinewas –2% day–1. Temporal patterns of individual size,clutch size and size at maturity also indicated that the 1996midsummer decline of daphnids was not the exclusive consequenceof age-0 fish predation. Instead, low reproductive capacityof daphnids also contributed significantly to the decline. Consequently,year-to-year variation of the Daphnia dynamics may be determinedby a fine-tuned ‘timing’ between the period of reducedfecundity and the time of the strongest predation impact byage-0 fish.  相似文献

1. Water fleas of the genus Daphnia are considered rare in tropical regions, and information on species distribution and community ecology is scarce and anecdotal. This study presents the results of a survey of Daphnia species distribution and community composition in 40 standing waterbodies in southern Kenya. The study sites cover a wide range of tropical standing aquatic habitats, from small ephemeral pools to large permanent lakes between approximately 700 and 2800 m a.s.l. Our analysis combines data on Daphnia distribution and abundance from zooplankton samples and dormant eggs in surface sediments. 2. Nearly 70% (27 of 40) of the sampled waterbodies were inhabited by Daphnia. Although their abundance in the active community was often very low, this high incidence shows that Daphnia can be equally widespread in tropical regions as in temperate regions. 3. Analysis of local species assemblages from dormant eggs in surface sediments was more productive than snapshot sampling of zooplankton communities. Surface‐sediment samples yielded eight Daphnia species in total, and allowed the detection of Daphnia in 25 waterbodies; zooplankton samples revealed the presence of only four Daphnia species in 16 waterbodies. 4. Daphnia barbata, D. laevis, and D. pulex were the most frequently recorded and most abundant Daphnia species. Canonical correspondence analysis of species–environment relationships indicates that variation in the Daphnia community composition of Kenyan waters was best explained by fish presence, temperature, macrophyte cover and altitude. Daphnia barbata and D. pulex tended to co‐occur with each other and with fish. Both species tended to occur in relatively large (>10 ha) and deeper (>2 m) alkaline waters (pH 8.5). Daphnia laevis mainly occurred in cool and clear, macrophyte‐dominated lakes at high altitudes.  相似文献
