Primiparous females gave birth around the same time as multiparous nonlactating females, and earlier than did multiparous lactating females. No differences in birth sex ratio were found between primiparous and multiparous females. During the breeding season following birth, primiparous mothers returned to oestrus later than did multiparous mothers, and while few primiparous mothers conceived successfully during that season, most multiparous mothers did. Primiparous females suckled their infants more frequently than did multiparous females at all ages; infants of primiparous females also made more nipple contacts per bout, and had shorter sucking bouts. When mothers came into oestrus, suckling frequency drastically increased for primiparous females, but not for multiparous females, magnifying the differences between the two groups. After the first oestrus, suckling frequency declined for all mothers, but multiparous mothers had consistently lower suckling frequencies than did primiparous mothers. The high suckling frequency, and numerous nipple contacts per bout, found among primiparous mothers are likely to be related to the low reproductive chances that these females faced during the breeding season. Multiparous mothers seemed to compensate for their low suckling frequency by lengthening the suckling bouts, and this suckling pattern did not hinder their reproduction. It is argued that primiparous mothers might have to suckle their infants more frequently because they can only produce milk at slow rates, being in this way forced into a reproductively inhibiting suckling pattern. However, the delay in subsequent reproduction could be ultimately advantageous for primiparous mothers if it enhanced infant survival, and allowed the mothers to regain physical condition before reproducing again.  相似文献

This paper reviews seasonal breeding, puberty, postpartum anestrus, embryonic loss and calf survival and their constraints in female yaks. Methods for improving fertility in postpartum yak cows are also considered. Yaks are seasonal breeders with mating and conception restricted in the warm season. Puberty generally occurs in the 2nd to the 4th warm season following birth, i.e. between 13 and 36 months of age. The cows usually have a long postpartum anestrus period; only a small proportion of the cows return to estrus in the 1st breeding season after calving, most come into estrus in the 2nd and 3rd years. Nutritional status is the most important determinant of reproduction in female yaks. Reproductive success is a direct result of the availability of pasture determined by climate, season, and management practices. Milking delays puberty by reducing milk intake (restricted suckling) and growth rate for the calf. Milking interferes with grazing and prolongs the duration of postpartum acyclicity in cows. Calves born early in the season have a longer suckling season than those born later in the season before the onset of winter. Thus, they can have their first cycle in the breeding season of the following year, while those born late in the season may not have their first estrus until 25 or 26 months of age. Cows calving early in the season are more likely to return to estrus in the year of calving because they have a longer period to recover from the demand on body reserves before the onset of winter.Inbreeding in smallholder yak farms is also discussed and minimizing inbreeding by exchanging bulls among different herds is suggested. Reproductive efficiency can be improved by nutritional supplementation during the winter, however, the most cost-effective and practical strategy for this needs to be determined. Early weaning or restricted suckling may shorten the duration of postpartum acyclicity, however, it is impractical due to reduced growth rates and increased winter mortality of early weaned calves. A single treatment with either GnRH, or PGF(2alpha)+GnRH can successfully induce estrus in yak cows that calved in previous years (with or without calf) but did not calve in the current year, however, it has little effect in cows nursing a calf born in the current year. The effects of administration of exogenous progestogens plus GnRH on the fertility of yak cows are worthy of further study.  相似文献

The correlations between some meteorological parameters and fertility data were evaluated in Barki x Rahmani crossbred ewes using the records of five consecutive years (2003-2007). Additionally, estrus detection and ultrasonic evaluation were applied on eighteen mature dry ewes during breeding and non-breeding seasons. The effect of lactation was evaluated by monitoring estrus behavior in ninety four lactating ewes from 40 to 120 d after parturition. Moreover, ultrasonography was used to identify ovarian activity in six cyclic and six acyclic non-lactating ewes. Results revealed that relative estrus occurrence and fertile mating were positively correlated (P <0.05) with high temperature and long photoperiod (conditions of summer season), and were negatively correlated (P < 0.01) with rainfall (condition of winter season). During breeding season, estrus rate, serum progesterone concentration, and diameter of largest follicle were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those observed during the non-breeding season. Furthermore, month of parturition had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on estrus rate of lactating ewes where ewes that lambed in August, September, and October recorded higher estrus rate than those lambed in November and December. However, the lactational strength did not exert any deleterious effect on the reproductive performance of lactating ewes.In conclusion, in Egypt under subtropical conditions, Barki x Rahmani crossbred ewes exerted optimum estrus behavior and fertile mating during summer season. The reduction in estrus activity during lactation was due to the seasonal effect rather than lactational stress.  相似文献

We studied the effect of sex and group size on the proportion of time a greater rhea, Rhea americana, allocates to vigilance and feeding during the breeding and the non-breeding seasons. We analysed 175 records of focal animals that were feeding alone or in groups of 2 to 26 birds. In both seasons, males spent more time in vigilance and less time in feeding than females. Both sexes spent more time in vigilance and less time in feeding during the breeding season. Sexual and seasonal differences in vigilance were the result of different mechanisms. Males had shorter feeding bouts than females but there were no sexual differences in the length of the vigilance bouts. On the contrary, seasonal differences were the result of males and females having longer vigilance bouts during the breeding season but there were no seasonal differences in the length of the feeding bouts. During the non-breeding season, individual vigilance was higher in rheas foraging alone than in groups. In this case, solitary birds had longer vigilance and shorter feeding bouts than birds foraging in groups. We discuss the possible effect of intragroup competition and food availability on the allocation of time between feeding and vigilance in this species.  相似文献

After parturition, eight sows were zero weaned by removing all piglets 6 h after birth; a further 18 sows suckled at least ten piglets each. Blood samples were collected on Day 4 after zero weaning or on Days 4, 14 and 21 of lactation and the sampling frequency increased during suckling bouts. Ovaries were recovered from sows on these days and corpora lutea were either extracted for estimation of relaxin and progesterone concentration, fixed for immunohistochemical analysis or incubated in vitro in the presence or absence of luteinizing hormone (LH) or oxytocin. Luteal weight and progesterone were higher in the zero-weaned sows than in lactating sows (P less than 0.05 and less than 0.001, respectively); relaxin content was below detection by Day 14. This was supported by immunohistochemical staining for relaxin, which showed limited immunostaining in zero-weaned and Day 4 sows, but none in the tissue recovered on Days 14 and 21, which showed typical signs of regression. Secretion of progesterone and relaxin by luteal tissue in vitro was highest in zero-weaned sows (P less than 0.05), decreased as lactation progressed and neither LH nor oxytocin had any significant effect. Concentrations of plasma relaxin were all less than 0.2 ng/ml in three of the four zero-weaned and Day-4-suckled sows assayed; there was no detectable increase during suckling bouts. It was concluded that during lactation the old corpus luteum of pregnancy is not able to release relaxin in response to suckling in vivo or to oxytocin treatment in vitro.  相似文献

The present study examined the effects of first pregnancy and nursing behavior on postpartum infertility in seasonally breeding rhesus monkeys to assess whether prolonged lactational infertility observed in adolescent mothers is due to a particular pattern of nursing or to decrements in body growth rates. After a successful first pregnancy, a significant percentage of the lactating adolescent mothers (57.1%; n = 8) failed to exhibit an ovulation with normal luteal phase during the subsequent breeding season. In contrast, the remaining lactating adolescents (42.9%, n = 6) and all of the adult mothers (100%, n = 6) exhibited ovulations with a normal luteal phase. Age alone was not the critical variable, since all nonlactating adolescents exhibited ovulations with normal luteal phase parameters in the subsequent breeding season. The luteal phase abnormalities exhibited by the subset of lactating adolescent females were characterized by an inadequate luteal phase (ILP) and by significantly lower serum levels of progesterone, estradiol, and bioactive luteinizing hormone. The occurrence of these ILP ovulations was associated with more frequent nursing bouts prior to ovulation and during the subsequent luteal phase. In contrast, nursing patterns for adult females who had ovulations with normal luteal phases were more similar to those of the infertile lactating adolescents exhibiting significantly longer and more frequent nursing bouts, suggesting that fully adult females may be less sensitive to the inhibitory aspects of a suckling stimulus. Differences in luteal phase function among lactating adolescents were not related to differential rates of ponderal or skeletal growth. A still-developing neuroendocrine system may thus render a significant proportion of adolescent females more sensitive to suckling-induced suppression of gonadotropin secretion.  相似文献

Captive wapiti hinds were observed during seven periods between June 1996 and November 1997. We investigated their activity and foraging behaviour on two pastures, heavily and lightly grazed, during four phases of the reproductive cycle (early gestation, late gestation, peak lactation, and late lactation). Within season, differences in forage availability between pastures had little apparent effect on wapiti feeding behaviour (p0.05). However, within each pasture, hinds tended to select locations of higher phytomass than the pasture average. Among seasons, effects of forage availability on feeding behaviour were pronounced. Hinds grazed longest in late lactation (12.8 h/day), when they spent 94% of their active time foraging, whereas during early gestation they foraged fewer hours (8.2 h/day) and less intensively (66% of active time). The longest foraging bouts also occurred in late lactation (100 min) and decreased linearly as the number of bouts per day increased (R(2)=0.88). The annual peak bite rate (BR) was in late lactation (62 bites/min), whereas the annual nadir occurred in early gestation (37 bites/min). Smallest bite sizes (BS) (mg) were recorded in late gestation (127 mg), and increased linearly with forage availability (R(2)=0.46), with largest BS occurring during peak lactation (280 mg). This study demonstrated how seasonal modifications in activity and foraging behaviour enabled gestating and lactating wapiti hinds to satisfy their changing nutritional requirements on seasonal pastures. Knowledge of behavioural compensation in response to nutritional demand and pasture conditions will be useful in designing supplementation program for farmed wapiti.  相似文献

To investigate the endocrine factors in Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) responsible for the suppression of the estrous cycle during the first reproductive season after delivery (150–360 days postpartum), peripheral blood was taken to measure plasma concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), progesterone, estradiol‐17β, immunoreactive (ir)‐inhibin, and cortisol. The results demonstrated that during the breeding season of lactating Japanese monkeys, circulating concentrations of FSH (1.7–2.7 ng/ml), LH (308.5–461.0 pg/ml), estradiol‐17β (<62.6 pg/ml), and progesterone (145.0–453.0 pg/ml) remained low and were similar to the nadir levels observed during both the normal menstrual cycles and the nonbreeding season. Concentrations of ir‐inhibin, which is secreted from both follicles and corpus luteum in female Japanese monkeys, were also low (300.5–585.0 pg/ml). This strongly suggests that no follicular development occurs during lactation. Serum concentrations of cortisol (261.0–519 ng/ml) were higher during lactation than during the nonbreeding season. Since babies were often seen suckling their mothers during the study, the results indicate that the increased cortisol levels were associated with suckling‐induced secretion of corticotrophin‐releasing hormone (CRH) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). The results of this study indicate that a long period of postpartum infertility in lactating Japanese monkeys, with apparent inhibition of follicle growth and anovulation, is due to weak gonadotropin stimulation, which may occur as the result of a suckling stimulus. Based on a year-long field study in northeastern Madagascar, I summarize annual patterns of niche use (food patch size, diet, forest height, and forest site) in two sympatric lemurs, Varecia variegata rubra and Eulemur fulvus albifrons. Furthermore, I examine intraspecific patterns of niche use according to sex, season, and reproductive stage in these two lemurs that differ in terms of energetic investment in reproduction. Lemurs as a group provide a special opportunity to test hypotheses concerning sex differences in niche use. Due to their body size monomorphism and seasonal, synchronous pattern of breeding, it is possible to directly evaluate whether sex differences in diet reflect high energetic investment in reproduction by females. Results confirm the hypothesis that intraspecific variation in niche use (e.g., sex differences, seasonal differences) would be more pronounced in V. v. rubra than in E. f. albifrons, due in large measure to the former's relatively high energetic investment in reproduction: 1a) Dietary sex differences in V. v. rubra are most pronounced during costly reproductive stages and involve acquisition of low-fiber, high-protein plant foods. Females of both species consume more seasonally available low-fiber protein (young leaves, flowers) relative to conspecific males during the hot dry season, but only in V. v. rubra females is this pattern also evident during gestation and lactation. 1b) The diets of female V. v. rubra and female E. f. albifrons are more similar to each other than are the diets of conspecific males and females in the case of V. v. rubra. This is not uniformly the case for female E. f. albifrons. This finding confirms a hypothesis put forward in Vasey ([2000] Am J Phys Anthropol 112:411-431) that energetic requirements of reproductive females drive niche separation more than do the energetic requirements of males. 1c) Both species synchronize most or all of lactation with seasonal food abundance and diversity. E. f. albifrons shows a more protracted period of synchrony, and this may contribute to its wide biogeographic distribution in Madagascar. 2) Sex differences and seasonal differences in microhabitat use reflect intraspecific patterns of thermoregulation, predator avoidance, and in the case of V. v. rubra, reproduction. One important factor selecting for body size monomorphism in lemurs appears to be the tight synchrony between lactation and periods of food abundance afforded by annual, seasonal breeding.  相似文献

We investigated, longitudinally and cross-sectionally, age and seasonal change in both the testis and nipple volume of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) in relation to concentration profiles of gonadal steroids: testosterone (T) in males and progesterone (P) in females. Testicular volume (TV) and nipple volume (NV) showed rapid growth at puberty, 4.5 and 3.5 years of age in males and females, respectively, but in both sexes there were precocious individuals. The testis as a whole matures at about 10 years of age. TV change is closely related to T concentration profile. The pattern of TV change is composed of maturation and seasonal effects, with individual variation evident mainly in the latter. Some individuals show a simple pattern consisting of one peak in the breeding season (from summer to winter) and one trough in the non-breeding season. Other individuals exhibit a more complicated pattern composed of two or more peaks and troughs before and during the breeding season. The nipple matures at about 7 years but it is difficult to determine the exact maturational age as there are many confounding factors relating to NV. NV shows seasonal fluctuations similar to that of TV. Many animals have periods of substantial growth whereas others do not. The NV in adults from 10 to 25 years does not appear to change much with age, but animals older than 25 years of age have significantly smaller nipples. Seasonal fluctuation in NV mirrors that of the P level. Considered to be controlled by estrogen and P, the NV is a good indicator of the physiological status of reproduction, with its peak about 2 weeks earlier than that of P, that is, at the mid-follicular phase. NV and P level show a similar pattern in pregnancy; from conception, indicated by a P peak, NV and P concentration first decrease, then they increase until peri-parturition and slowly decrease again until the next breeding season.This revised version was published online in April 2005 with corrections to the cover date of the issue.  相似文献

Mother–offspring interactions soon after parturition play a key role in the survival of mammals. We investigated the suckling behavior of semi-captive Western Derby eland (Taurotragus derbianus derbianus) in a 60-ha enclosure covered by dense savanna vegetation in Senegal and farmed Common eland (T. oryx) on an open 2-ha pasture in the Czech Republic. We hypothesized that the basic pattern of suckling bout duration and mother–offspring interactions would be similar between species, but would vary in response to the environmental conditions and breeding system. During three calving periods, we observed the suckling of 27 and 23 calves of Derby and Common elands, respectively, between the ages of 1–5 months, and the interactions between mother and calf before and during suckling. Suckling bout duration increased with the age of the calves for both elands. However, in Derby elands we recorded longer suckling bouts in male than female calves and shorter suckling bouts in primiparous mothers than multiparous ones; no differences were found in farmed Common elands. The animals’ active approach to mother–offspring contact, for example naso–anal contact, and initiation and termination of suckling, resulted in longer suckling bouts in Derby elands. The results suggest that Derby elands that range over a large enclosure with dense vegetation cover adjust their maternal behavior in compliance with potential predator risk, facing a trade-off between nursing and vigilant behavior in the wild. The suckling behavior of farmed elands, on the other hand, reflects the conditions of captivity without predators and with the small available area enabling permanent visual contact of animals.  相似文献

The geographic distribution of Japanese macaques includes populations with the most northern range of any primate species. Not surprisingly, females of this species are characterized by physiological adaptations and unique fat deposition mechanisms that facilitate their survival through the sometimes‐harsh seasonal conditions of temperate climates, as well as sustaining the metabolic costs of mating, pregnancy, and lactation. Here, we explore the relationship between nutritional status, seasonality, and reproductive status using anthropometric and leptin measures from 14 captive female Japanese macaques. No seasonal patterns were found in the levels of leptin, but there were differences between seasons in anthropometric measures, specifically between the beginning and the end of the mating season. Females gained weight and accumulated energy reserves in fall to prepare for mating activity, and to survive the severe conditions of winter, which is also the period of gestation if pregnancy occurs. Lactating females had larger total skinfolds relative to nonlactating individuals, and females with older babies at the beginning of the mating season had larger abdominal skinfolds than did those with younger babies. There was a relationship between the likelihood of conception and nutritional status, with females that conceived during one mating season being in better condition at the end of their previous mating season. Together, these results suggest that, even in captive settings, seasonal breeding has a cost on the energetic demands of mating, and that higher condition (i.e. fatter) females could afford the demands of lactation and reproduced more rapidly. Projecting population responses to climate change requires an understanding of climatic impacts on key components of reproduction. Here, we investigate the associations among breeding phenology, climate and incubation schedules in the chestnut‐crowned babbler (Pomatostomus ruficeps), a 50 g passerine with female‐only, intermittent incubation that typically breeds from late winter (July) to early summer (November). During daylight hours, breeding females spent an average of 33 min on the nest incubating (hereafter on‐bouts) followed by 24‐min foraging (hereafter off‐bouts), leading to an average daytime nest attentiveness of 60%. Nest attentiveness was 25% shorter than expected from allometric calculations, largely because off‐bout durations were double the expected value for a species with 16 g clutches (4 eggs × 4 g/egg). On‐bout durations and daily attentiveness were both negatively related to ambient temperature, presumably because increasing temperatures allowed more time to be allocated to foraging with reduced detriment to egg cooling. By contrast, on‐bout durations were positively associated with wind speed, in this case because increasing wind speed exacerbated egg cooling during off‐bouts. Despite an average temperature change of 12°C across the breeding season, breeding phenology had no effect on incubation schedules. This surprising result arose because of a positive relationship between temperature and wind speed across the breeding season: Any benefit of increasing temperatures was canceled by apparently detrimental consequences of increasing wind speed on egg cooling. Our results indicate that a greater appreciation for the associations among climatic variables and their independent effects on reproductive investment are necessary to understand the effects of changing climates on breeding phenology.  相似文献

Although allonursing (allowing non-filial offspring to suckle) can be a costly behaviour, it has been reported for many mammals including ungulate species. However, such behaviour is very rare in equids. This is the first report on adoption and allonursing in captive plains zebra (Equus burchellii), recorded in the Dv?r Králové Zoo, Czech Republic. We observed a case of adoption of an orphaned foal by a lactating mare, who then regularly nursed two foals (filial and non-filial). The allonursing mare rejected more suckling attempts, terminated suckling bouts more often, and had a shorter suckling bout duration than other mares. When nursing both foals at the same time, the suckling bout lasted for less time than when nursing a single foal, regardless of whether it was filial or non-filial. The allonursing mare apparently did not discriminate between the filial and non-filial foal.  相似文献

The effect of lactation on menstrual cycles, ovulation and conception was studied in a group of non-contracepting Amerindian Mopan Mayan women. Anthropological observations of relevant events were made over a 21-month period. Blood samples were assayed to determine the plasma concentrations of prolactin, luteinising hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, human chorionic gonadotrophin, placental lactogen, oestrogen, progesterone and cortisol. The data show that: frequent and prolonged breast-feeding was associated with a marked increase in plasma prolactin concentrations to levels similar to those in lactating Gaing but higher than those in lactating Scottish women; ovulatory menstrual cycles and pregnancy occurred during frequent lactation; in lactating menstruating women there was an inverse correlation between fat weight and months post-partum. These data suggest that other factors as well as suckling account for the effects of lactation on fecundity.  相似文献

A prediction of the seasonal investment hypothesis is that overall energy investment needs to be greater for young being produced at colder temperatures. Then, that energy cost is lower as temperature becomes warmer. To evaluate this assumption, I performed a series of measures of food intake and reproductive output throughout four successive bouts of lactation in striped hamsters (Cricetulus barabensis) exposed to a constant warm temperature (Warm, 21°C) or exposed to consecutive decreases in ambient temperatures from warm to cold (Warm-Cold, 30-0°C). Warm hamsters showed similar asymptotic food intake, litter size and mass over the course of four successive bouts of lactation. Warm-Cold females consumed more food, but raised lighter litters during the third bout than first bout of lactation. Ambient temperatures had significant effects on energy budget and reproductive output, by which resting metabolic rate, nonshivering thermogenesis and activity of cytochrome c oxidase (EC 1.9.3.1) of brown adipose tissue were increased, but reproductive output was decreased with declines of temperatures. These findings suggest that a trade-off occurs between different components of energy expenditure during the successive course of four bouts of lactation. Seasonal hamsters decrease their reproductive output, but increase the energy spent on thermogenesis as the ambient temperature becomes colder. It may also indicate that temperature has a direct effect on metabolism, leading to an increase in overall energy expenditure at lower temperatures.  相似文献

Based on Trivers' (1974) theory of parent/offspring conflict, we predicted that weaning would be accelerated under poor dietary conditions in an aseasonally breeding, monomorphic ungulate, the collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu). Suckling behavior was observed in 18 captive litters under a dietary treatment of high or low protein formulated to mimic forage under ecological conditions of normal rainfall vs. drought. Litters on the low protein diet weaned later (mean of 27 weeks) than litters on the high protein diet (mean of 21 weeks). Other indices of cumulative suckling effort (weaning weight, cumulative minutes suckling, cumulative bouts) did not differ between dietary treatments. No differences in suckling effort were found relative to offspring sex or litter size. Milk did not completely compensate for the low protein diet affecting growth of young in the second and third phases of lactation. Some nursers did not conserve bodily resources as would be expected if the benefits of short interbirth intervals outweighed the costs of lactation during unpredictable drought conditions.  相似文献

Analysis of records of a bank vole breeding colony suggests that fertility is high immediately post partum, declines during established lactation and rises after weaning of young. Mating tests with lactating females and females whose young had been removed at birth showed that receptivity is reduced during lactation, although amongst the females which did mate there was no difference between lactating and non-lactating animals in the proportion which produced litters. However, average size of litters at birth was significantly larger for the lactating than for the non-lactating females. There is some evidence suggesting that this difference may arise after ovulation has occurred. Virgin females were no more receptive or fertile than lactating females.  相似文献

In mammals, reproduction, especially for females is energetically demanding. Therefore, during the reproductive period females could potentially adjust patterns of thermoregulation and foraging in concert to minimise the energetic constraints associated with pregnancy and lactation. We assessed the influence of pregnancy, lactation, and post-lactation on torpor use and foraging behaviour by female little brown bats, Myotis lucifugus. We measured thermoregulation by recording skin temperature and foraging by tracking bats which carried temperature-sensitive radio-tags. We found that individuals, regardless of reproductive condition, used torpor, but the patterns of torpor use varied significantly between reproductive (pregnant and lactating) females and post-lactating females. As we predicted, reproductive females entered torpor for shorter bouts than post-lactating females. Although all females used torpor frequently, pregnant females spent less time in torpor, and maintained higher skin temperatures than either lactating or post-lactating females. This result suggests that delayed offspring development which has been associated with torpor use during pregnancy, may pose a higher risk to an individual’s reproductive success than reduced milk production during lactation. Conversely, foraging behaviour of radio-tagged bats did not vary with reproductive condition, suggesting that even short, shallow bouts of torpor produce substantial energy savings, likely obviating the need to spend more time foraging. Our data clearly show that torpor use and reproduction are not mutually exclusive and that torpor use (no matter how short or shallow) is an important means of balancing the costs of reproduction for M. lucifugus.  相似文献

Lactation is the most energy demanding part of parental care in mammals, so parent-offspring conflict arises over milk provided by the mother. In some species females commonly become pregnant shortly after parturition of previous young. This further intensifies mother-offspring conflict due to concurrent pregnancy and lactation. In equids it has been well established that pregnant females wean their foals earlier than non-pregnant ones. Intensified mother-offspring conflict was presumed to associate with pregnancy also during the period of intensive lactation, i.e., before the weaning process starts. We investigated the effect of pregnancy on suckling behaviour characteristics as indicators of mother-offspring conflict in domestic horses. Contrary to expectation, here we provide evidence of a decreased mother-offspring conflict related to pregnancy in lactating females during first two trimesters of pregnancy. Pregnant mares provided longer suckling bouts and did not reject or terminate suckling of their foals more often than non-pregnant mares. Our results suggest that pregnant mares cope with parallel investment into a nursed foal and a foetus through enhancing nursing behaviour in early stages of pregnancy before the initially low requirements of the foetus increase. They compensate their suckling foal with the perspective of its early weaning due to ongoing pregnancy.  相似文献
