We analyzed the response of potted strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) seedlings exposed to water stress by withholding water for 10 d (WS). Leaf water potential, net CO2 assimilation, and stomatal conductance decreased with increasing water deficit. A 30 % reduction of chlorophyll (Chl) content in the antenna complexes was observed in WS-plants. Simultaneously, a decline of photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) occurred as a result of an excess of solar radiation energy when carbon assimilation was limited by stomata closure due to soil water deficit. The non-photochemical quenching of Chl fluorescence (ΦNPQ) significantly increased, as well as the leaf contents of zeaxanthin (Z) and antheraxanthin (A) at the expense of violaxanthin during the WS-period. Elevated predawn contents of de-epoxidized xanthophyll cycle components were associated with a sustained lowering of predawn photosystem 2 efficiency; this suggested an engagement of Z+A in a state primed for energy dissipation. Thus, the ability of strawberry trees to maintain the functionality of the xanthophyll cycle during the Mediterranean summer is an efficient mechanism to prevent irreversible damages to the photosynthetic machinery through thermal energy dissipation in the antenna and the reduction in photochemical efficiency.  相似文献

The effects of drought on the photosynthetic characteristics of three Mediterranean plants (olive, Olea europea L.; rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis L.; lavender, Lavandula stoechas L.) exposed to elevated UV-B irradiation in a glasshouse were investigated over a period of weeks. Drought conditions were imposed on 2-year-old plants by withholding water. During the onset of water stress, analyses of the response of net carbon assimilation of leaves to their intercellular CO2 concentration were used to examine the potential limitations imposed by stomata, carboxylation velocity and capacity for regeneration of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate on photosynthesis. Measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence were used to determine changes in the efficiency of light utilization for electron transport, the occurrence of photoinhibition of photosystem II photochemistry and the possibility of stomatal patchiness across leaves. The first stages of water stress produced decreases in the light-saturated rate of CO2 assimilation which were accompanied by decreases in the maximum carboxylation velocity and the capacity for regeneration of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate in the absence of any significant photodamage to photosystem II. Leaves of rosemary and lavender were more sensitive than those of olive during the first stages of the drought treatment and also exhibited increases in stomatal limitation. With increasing water stress, significant decreases in the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry occurred in lavender and rosemary, and stomatal limitation was increased in olive. No indication of any heterogeneity of photosynthesis was found in any leaves. Drought treatment significantly decreased leaf area in all species, an important factor in drought-induced decreases in photosynthetic productivity. Exposure of plants to elevated UV-B radiation (0.47 W m(-2)) prior to and during the drought treatment had no significant effects on the growth or photosynthetic activities of the plants. Consequently, it is predicted that increasing UV-B due to future stratospheric ozone depletion is unlikely to have any significant impact on the photosynthetic productivity of olive, lavender and rosemary in the field.  相似文献

Photosynthesis, photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry, photoinhibition and the xanthophyll cycle in the senescent flag leaves of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants grown in the field were investigated. Compared to the non-senescent leaves, photosynthetic capacity was significantly reduced in senescent flag leaves. The light intensity at which photosynthesis was saturated also declined significantly. The light response curves of PSII photochemistry indicate that a down-regulation of PSII photochemistry occurred in senescent leaves in particular at high light. The maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry in senescent flag leaves decreased slightly when measured at predawn but substantially at midday, suggesting that PSII function was largely maintained and photoinhibition occurred in senescent leaves when exposed to high light. At midday, PSII efficiency, photochemical quenching and the efficiency of excitation capture by open PSII centers decreased considerably, while non-photochemical quenching increased significantly. Moreover, compared with the values at early morning, a greater decrease in CO2 assimilation rate was observed at midday in senescent leaves than in control leaves. The levels of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin via the de-epoxidation of violaxanthin increased in senescent flag leaves from predawn to midday. An increase in the xanthophyll cycle pigments relative to chlorophyll was observed in senescent flag leaves. The results suggest that the xanthophyll cycle was activated in senescent leaves due to the decrease in CO2 assimilation capacity and the light intensity for saturation of photosynthesis and that the enhanced formation of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin at high light may play an important role in the dissipation of excess light energy and help to protect photosynthetic apparatus from photodamage. Our results suggest that the well-known function of the xanthophyll cycle to safely dissipate excess excitation energy is also important for maintaining photosynthetic function during leaf senescence.  相似文献

Responses of CO2 assimilation and stomatal conductance to decreasing leaf water potential, and to environmental factors, were analysed in a mixed natural stand of sessile oak (Quercus petraea ssp. medwediewii) and beech (Fagus svlvatica L.) in Greece during the exceptionally dry summer of 1998. Seasonal courses of leaf water potential were similar for both species, whereas mean net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were always higher in sessile oak than in beech. The relationship between net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance was strong for both species. Sessile oak had high rates of photosynthesis even under very low leaf water potentials and high air temperatures, whereas the photosynthetic rate of beech decreased at low water potentials. Diurnal patterns were similar in both species but sessile oak had higher rates of CO2 assimilation than beech. Our results indicate that sessile oak is more tolerant of drought than beech, due, in part, to its maintenance of photosynthesis at low water potential.  相似文献

The characteristics of photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and xanthophyll cycle pigments during flag leaf senescence of field-grown wheat plants were investigated. With senescence progressing, the light-saturated net CO2 assimilation rate expressed either on a basis of leaf area or chlorophyll decreased significantly. The apparent quantum yield of net photosynthesis decreased when expressed on a leaf area basis but increased when expressed on a chlorophyll basis. The maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry decreased very little while actual PSII efficiency, photochemical quenching, and the efficiency of excitation capture by open PSII centers decreased considerably. At the same time, non-photochemical quenching increased significantly. A substantial decrease in the contents of violaxanthin and zeaxanthin, but a slight decrease in the content of antheraxanthin were observed. However, the de-epoxidation status of the xanthophyll cycle was positively correlated with progressive senescence. This increase was due mainly to a smaller decrease in zeaxanthin than in violaxanthin. Our results suggest that PSII apparatus remained functional, but a down-regulation of PSII occurred under the steady state of photosynthesis in senescent flag leaves. Such a down-regulation was associated with the closure of PSII centers and an enhanced xanthophyll cycle-related thermal dissipation in the PSII antennae.  相似文献

Abstract

Photosynthesis and photoprotective mechanisms were investigated in the field on Laurus nobilis L. and Quercus ilex L. leaves exposed to summer drought (July) and winter cold (February) conditions compared with no-stress conditions (May). In July, net photosynthetic rate (A) and stomatal conductance (g s) decreased significantly compared with May in both species; conversely the highest ETR/A ratio and no difference in non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) was observed. In February A, g s and ETR/A declined compared with May but the highest NPQ were found in both species. Our data suggest that during summer, an increase of photochemical alternative pathways to carbon reduction, were able to effectively protect the photosynthetic apparatus under drought. In winter, the thermal dissipation of excess absorbed light constitutes the main safety valve for the photosynthetic apparatus.  相似文献

The plants of Prosopis juliflora growing in northern India are exposed to large variations of temperature, vapour pressure deficits (VPD), and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) throughout the year. Under these conditions P. juliflora had two short periods of leaf production, one after the winter season and second after summer, which resulted in two distinct even aged cohorts of leaves. In winter with cold nights (2–8 °C) and moderate temperatures during the day, the plants showed high rates of photosynthesis. In summer the midday temperatures often reached <45 °C and plants showed severe inhibition of photosynthesis. The leaves of second cohort appeared in July and showed typical midday depression of photosynthesis. An analysis of diurnal partitioning of the absorbed excitation energy into photochemistry showed that a smaller fraction of the energy was utilised for photochemistry and a greater fraction was dissipated thermally, further the photon utilisation for photochemistry and thermal dissipation is largely affected by the interaction of irradiance and temperature. The plants showed high photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) at predawn and very little photoinhibition in all seasons except in summer. The photoinhibition in summer was pronounced with very poor recovery during night. Since P. juliflora exhibited distinct pattern of senescence and production of new leaves after winter and summer stress period, it appeared that the ontogenic characteristic together with its ability for safe dissipation of excess radiant energy in P. juliflora contributes to its growth and survival.  相似文献

Plants of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz cv. Cigana Preta) grown in a sand root medium were watered with nutrient solutions containing either 3 mM nitrate (low N) or 12 mM nitrate (high N). Chlorophyll concentration, chlorophyll a/b ratio, stomatal conductance, photorespiration rate and net carbon assimilation rate (on an area and a mass basis, but not on a chlorophyll basis) all decreased in low-N plants as compared with high-N ones. By contrast, photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency increased in low-N plants. As indicated by chlorophyll a fluorescence data, these plants exhibited increases in both excitation pressure on Photosystem II and thermal energy dissipation, with a corresponding decrease in quantum yield of electron transport, when contrasted with high-N plants. This decrease paralleled an unchanged maximal Photosystem II photochemical efficiency, suggesting a down-regulation of the Photosystem II photochemistry. It is proposed that decline in biochemical capacity for carboxylation, rather than stomatal limitation or electron transport, were the major constraints associated to the reduced photosynthetic rates induced by nitrogen deficiency in cassava plants.  相似文献

The subcellular localization (cytoplasm, vacuoles, cell walls) of polyphenol compounds during the development of the multicellular nonglandular leaf hairs of Olea europaea (scales) and Quercus ilex (stellates), was investigated. Hairs of all developmental stages were treated with specific inducers of polyphenol fluorescence, and the bright yellow-green fluorescence of individual hairs was monitored with epifluorescence microscopy. During the early ontogenetic stages, bright fluorescence was emitted from the cytoplasm of the cells composing the multicellular shield of the scales of O. europaea. Transmission electron micrographs of the same stages showed that these cells possessed poor vacuolation and thin cell walls. The nucleus of these cells may be protected against ultraviolet-B radiation damage. The progressive vacuolation that occurred during maturation was followed by a shifting of the bright green-yellow fluorescence from the perinuclear region and the cytoplasm to the cell walls. The same trends were observed during the development of the nonglandular stellate hairs of Quercus ilex, in which maturation was also accompanied by a considerable secondary thickening of the cell walls. Despite the differences in morphology, high concentrations of polyphenol compounds are initially located mainly in the cytoplasm of the developing nonglandular hairs, and their deposition on the cell walls takes place during the secondary cell wall thickening. These structural changes during the development of the leaf hairs make them a very effective barrier against abiotic (uv-B radiation) and probably biotic (pathogenic) stresses.  相似文献

Information on the photosynthetic process and its limitations is essential in order to predict both the capacity of species to adapt to conditions associated with climate change and the likely changes in plant communities. Considering that high‐mountain species are especially sensitive, three species representative of subalpine forests of the Central Catalan Pyrenees: mountain pine (Pinus uncinata Mill.), birch (Betula pendula Roth) and rhododendron (Rhododendron ferrugineum L.) were studied under conditions associated with climate change, such as low precipitation, elevated atmospheric [CO2] and high solar irradiation incident at Earth's surface, in order to detect any photosynthetic limitations. Short‐term high [CO2] increased photosynthesis rates (A) and water use efficiency (WUE), especially in birch and mountain pine, whereas stomatal conductance (gs) was not altered in either species. Birch showed photosynthesis limitation through stomatal closure related to low rainfall, which induced photoinhibition and early foliar senescence. Rhododendron was especially affected by high irradiance, showing early photosynthetic saturation in low light, highest chlorophyll content, lowest gas exchange rates and least photoprotection. Mountain pine had the highest A, photosynthetic capacity (Amax) and light‐saturated rates of net CO2 assimilation (Asat), which were maintained under reduced precipitation. Furthermore, maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm), thermal energy dissipation, PRI and SIPI radiometric index, and ascorbate content indicated improved photoprotection with respect to the other two species. However, maximum velocity of carboxylation of RuBisco (Vcmax) indicated that N availability would be the main photosynthetic limitation in this species.  相似文献

Diurnal time courses of net CO2 assimilation rates, stomatal conductance and light-driven electron fluxes were measured in situ on attached leaves of 30-year-old Turkey oak trees (Quercus cerris L.) under natural summer conditions in central Italy. Combined measurements of gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence under low O2 concentrations allowed the demonstration of a linear relationship between the photochemical efficiency of PSII (fluorescence measurements) and the apparent quantum yield of gross photosynthesis (gas exchange). This relationship was used under normal O2 to compute total light-driven electron fluxes, and to partition them into fractions used for RuBP carboxylation or RuBP oxygenation. This procedure also yielded an indirect estimate of the rate of photorespiration in vivo. The time courses of light-driven electron flow, net CO2 assimilation and photorespiration paralleled that of photosynthetic photon flux density, with important afternoon deviations as soon as a severe drought stress occurred, whereas photochemical efficiency and maximal fluorescence underwent large but reversible diurnal decreases. The latter observation indicated the occurrence of a large non-photochemical energy dissipation at PSII. We estimated that less than 60% of the total photosynthetic electron flow was used for carbon assimilation at midday, while about 40% was devoted to photorespiration. The rate of carbon loss by photorespiration (R1) reached mean levels of 56% of net assimilation rates. The potential application of this technique to analysis of the relative contributions of thermal de-excitation at PSII and photorespiratory carbon recycling in the protection of photosynthesis against stress effects is discussed.  相似文献

Photoinhibition in plants depends on the extent of light energy being absorbed in excess of what can be used in photochemistry and is expected to increase as environmental constraints limit CO2 assimilation. Water stress induces the closure of stomata, limiting carbon availability at the carboxylation sites in the chloroplasts and, therefore, resulting in an excessive excitation of the photosynthetic apparatus, particularly photosystem II (PSII). Mechanisms have evolved in plants in order to protect against photoinhibition, such as non-photochemical energy dissipation, chlorophyll concentration changes, chloroplast movements, increases in the capacity for scavenging the active oxygen species, and leaf movement or paraheliotropism, avoiding direct exposure to sun. In beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), paraheliotropism seems to be an important feature of the plant to avoid photoinhibition. The extent of the leaf movement is increased as the water potential drops, reducing light interception and maintaining a high proportion of open PSII reaction centres. Photoinhibition in water-stressed beans, measured as the capacity to recover F(v)/F(m), is not higher than in well-watered plants and leaf temperature is maintained below the ambient, despite the closure of stomata. Bean leaves restrained from moving, increase leaf temperature and reduce qP, the content of D1 protein and the capacity to recover F(v)/F(m) after dark adaptation, the extent of such changes being higher in water-stressed plants. Data are presented suggesting that even though protective under water stress, paraheliotropism, by reducing light interception, affects the capacity to maintain high CO2 assimilation rates throughout the day in well-watered plants.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Gas exchange temperature dependence in Quercus ilex shrubs growing in the Mediterranean maquis was analysed. The gas exchange trend was monitored during the year: photosynthetic activity (A net) reached the highest average rates in early spring and autumn (12.5 µmol m-2s-1 was the absolute maximum A net measured) and the lowest rates were monitored in the middle of June. There was a good correlation (r = 0.72) between A net and g s (A net = 4.1246 ln g s + 4316; P < 0.01), indicating that stomatal control of CO2 diffusion plays an important role in controlling photosynthetic activity. Leaf temperature allowing the highest photosynthetic and stomatal conductance rates of Quercus ilex were in the range 17.5 – 29°C. A net and gs dropped below half its maximum value when leaf temperatures were below 11.5°C and above 35.7°C. Transpiration rates (E) were strongly related to leaf temperature; E increased as leaf temperature increased and the highest E rates were monitored in June, despite a 46% decrease in g s. Leaf water loss from transpiration, during the drought period, could result in leaf water stress which would exacerbate heat effects on photosynthesis. During summer, the increase in leaf temperatures decreased g s which in turn decreased A net. Consequently, stomatal control in Quercus ilex may be considered as an adaptive strategy during drought.  相似文献

Analyses of CO2 exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence were carried out to assess photosynthetic performance during senescence of maize leaves. Senescent leaves displayed a significant decrease in CO2 assimilatory capacity accompanied by a decrease in stomatal conductance and an increase in intercellular CO2 concentration. The analyses of fluorescence quenching under steady-state photosynthesis showed that senescence resulted in an increase in non-photochemical quenching and a decrease in photo-chemical quenching. It also resulted in a decrease in the efficiency of excitation energy capture by open PSII reaction centres and the quantum yield of PSII electron transport, but had very little effect on the maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry. The results determined from the fast fluorescence induction kinetics indicated an increase in the proportion of QB-non-reducing PSII reaction centres and a decrease in the rate of QA reduction in senescent leaves. Theoretical analyses of fluorescence parameters under steady-state photosynthesis suggest that the increase in the non-photochemical quenching was due to an increase in the rate constant to thermal dissipation of excitation energy by PSII and that the decrease in the quantum yield of PSII electron transport was associated with a decrease in the rate constant of PSII photochemistry. Based on these results, it is suggested that the decrease in the quantum yield of PSII electron transport in senescent leaves was down-regulated by an increase in the proportion of QB-non-reducing PSII reaction centres and in the non-photochemical quenching. The photosynthetic electron transport would thus match the decreased demand for ATP and NADPH in carbon assimilation which was inhibited significantly in senescent leaves.Key words: Chlorophyll fluorescence, gas exchange, maize (Zea mays L.), photochemical and non-photochemical quenching, photosystem II photochemistry.   相似文献

There is a long-standing controversy as to whether drought limits photosynthetic CO2 assimilation through stomatal closure or by metabolic impairment in C3 plants. Comparing results from different studies is difficult due to interspecific differences in the response of photosynthesis to leaf water potential and/or relative water content (RWC), the most commonly used parameters to assess the severity of drought. Therefore, we have used stomatal conductance (g) as a basis for comparison of metabolic processes in different studies. The logic is that, as there is a strong link between g and photosynthesis (perhaps co-regulation between them), so different relationships between RWC or water potential and photosynthetic rate and changes in metabolism in different species and studies may be 'normalized' by relating them to g. Re-analysing data from the literature using light-saturated g as a parameter indicative of water deficits in plants shows that there is good correspondence between the onset of drought-induced inhibition of different photosynthetic sub-processes and g. Contents of ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) decrease early in drought development, at still relatively high g (higher than 150 mmol H20 m(-2) s(-1)). This suggests that RuBP regeneration and ATP synthesis are impaired. Decreased photochemistry and Rubisco activity typically occur at lower g (<100 mmol H20 m(-2) s(-1)), whereas permanent photoinhibition is only occasional, occurring at very low g (<50 mmol H20 m(-2) s(-1)). Sub-stomatal CO2 concentration decreases as g becomes smaller, but increases again at small g. The analysis suggests that stomatal closure is the earliest response to drought and the dominant limitation to photosynthesis at mild to moderate drought. However, in parallel, progressive down-regulation or inhibition of metabolic processes leads to decreased RuBP content, which becomes the dominant limitation at severe drought, and thereby inhibits photosynthetic CO2 assimilation.  相似文献

Some processes of excess radiation dissipation have been associated with changes in leaf reflectance near 531 nm. We aimed to study the relations between the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) derived from this signal, and photosynthetic radiation-use efficiency (defined as net CO2 assimilation rate/incident photon flux density) in a cereal canopy. Measurements of reflectance, fluorescence, gas exchange and xanthophyll cycle pigments were made in the morning, midday and afternoon in barley canopies with two levels of nitrogen fertilization. The photosynthetic radiation-use efficiency decreased at midday, mainly in the third leaf, in both treatments, with lower values for the nitrogen deficient leaves. The zeaxanthin content showed the inverse pattern, increasing at midday and in the nitrogen deficient treatment. The photosynthetic radiation-use efficiency was well correlated with the epoxidation state, EPS (violaxanthin + 0.5 antheraxanthin)/(violaxanthin + antheraxanthin + zeaxanthin). The PRI [here defined as (R539 - R570)/(R539+ R570)] was significantly correlated with epoxidation state and zeaxanthin and with photosynthetic radiation-use efficiency. These results validate the utility of PRI in the assessment of radiation-use efficiency at canopy level.  相似文献

Variations among Woody Angiosperms in Response to Flooding   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Effects of flooding on young Populus deltoides, Salix nigra, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. globulus, Ulmus americana, Quercus rubra and Fraxinus pennsylvanica plants were studied. Flooding variously induced several sequential physiological disturbances, with stomatal closure among the earliest responses. Subsequent responses included inhibition of root growth, alterations in root and stem morphology, formation of adventitious roots, and leaf senescence. In amphistomatous species (Populus deltoides, Salix nigra, Eucalyptus camaldulensis) flooding rapidly induced stomatal closure on the adaxial leaf surface. It also significantly induced stomatal closure on the abaxial epidermis of Populus deltoides but not that of Salix nigra or Eucalyptus camaldulensis. In hypostomatous species (Eucalyptus globulus, Ulmus americana) flooding significantly induced stomatal closure on the abaxial surface within 3 days. Stomatal responses to flooding were not correlated with leaf water stress. In both long- and short-term experiments, flooding did not significantly increase plant water stress. These results deemphasized the importance of plant water stress in inducing plant responses to flooding. The importance of various hormones in inducing flooding symptoms is discussed.  相似文献

We studied photosynthetic and stomatal responses of grain sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench cv. Pioneer 8500), soybean ( Glycine max L. cv. Flyer) and eastern gamagrass ( Tripsacum dactyloides L.) during experimental sun and shade periods simulating summer cloud cover. Leaf gas exchange measurements of field plants showed that short-term (5 min) shading of leaves to 300–400 μmol m−2 s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density reduced photosynthesis, leaf temperature, stomatal conductance, transpiration and water use efficiency and increased intercellular CO2 partial pressure. In all species, photosynthetic recovery was delayed when leaves were reilluminated, apparently by stomatal closure. The strongest stomatal response was in soybean. Photosynthetic recovery was studied further with soybeans grown indoors (maximum photosynthetic photon flux density 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1). Plants grown indoors had responses to shade similar to those of field plants, except for brief nonstomatal limitation immediately after reillumination. These responses indicated the importance of the light environment during leaf development on assimilation responses to variable light, and suggested different limitations on carbon assimilation in different parts of the soybean canopy. Photosynthetic oxygen evolution recovered immediately upon reillumination, indicating that the light reactions did not limit soybean photosynthetic recovery. While shade periods caused stomatal closure and reduced carbon gain and water loss in all species, the consequences for carbon gain/water loss were greatest in soybean. The occurrence of stomatal closure in all three species may arise from their shared phenologies and herbaceous growth forms.  相似文献

Young olive plants (Olea europaea L.) were grown either in hydroponic or soil culture in a glasshouse over two growing seasons. Plants were exposed to NaCl concentrations between 0 and 200 mM for 34–35 days followed by 30–34 days of relief from stress to determine the effect of salinity on gas exchange of two cultivars ('Frantoio' and 'Leccino') differing in salt-exclusion capacity. Salinity stress brought about a reduction in net CO2 assimilation and stomatal conductance in both cultivars, but the effect was more pronounced in the salt tolerant 'Frantoio' than in the salt-sensitive 'Leccino' cultivar. Therefore, gas exchange parameters may be misleading if used to evaluate the salt tolerance of olive genotypes. Recovery in gas exchange parameters during relief from stress was slower in the salt sensitive cultivar. In general, the decline in assimilation reflected the salt-induced reduction in stomatal conductance, but a marked effect on carboxylation efficiency and CO2 compensation point was measured in plants treated with 200 mM NaCl for four weeks. The cultivar 'Frantoio' showed a 50% reduction in assimilation and stomatal conductance at 146 and 78 mM leaf Na+ concentration (tissue water molar basis) respectively, whereas the corresponding 50% thresholds for the cultivar 'Leccino' were at 275 and 264 mM, respectively.  相似文献
