Schistosoma mansoni is an important human parasitic disease which is widespread throughout Africa. As Biomphalaria pfeifferi snails act as intermediate host, knowledge of their population ecology is an essential prerequisite towards understanding disease transmission. We conducted a field study and assessed the density and microhabitat preferences of B.pfeifferi in a natural habitat which was a residual pool of a river. Repeated removal collecting revealed a density of 26.6 [95% confidence interval (CI): 24.9-28.3] snails/m2. B. pfeifferi showed microhabitat preferences for shallow water (depths: 0-4cm). They were found most abundantly close to the shoreline (distances: 0-40cm), and preferred either plant detritus or bedrock as substratum. Lymnaea natalensis, a snail which may act as a host for human Fasciola gigantica, also occurred in this habitat with a density of 34.0 (95% CI: 24.7-43.3) snails/m2, and preferred significantly different microhabitats when compared to B.pfeifferi. Microhabitat selection by these snail species was also investigated in a man-made habitat nearby, which consisted of a flat layer of concrete fixed on the riverbed, covered by algae. Here, B.pfeifferi showed no preference for locations close to the shoreline, probably because the habitat had a uniform depth. We conclude that repeated removal collecting in shallow habitats provides reliable estimates of snail densities and that habitat changes through constructions may create favourable microhabitats and contribute to additional disease transmission.  相似文献

Microhabitat use and preferences of juvenile and adult bullhead Cottus gobio , from the River Voer, Flanders, were studied and compared across different seasons. Water depth, water velocity near the substratum, surface water velocity and substratum type used by C. gobio differed between seasons. These differences, however, were not attributable to differences in microhabitat availability. Adults appeared to prefer higher water velocities and coarser substrata than the average ones available in the basin. Although water depth appeared to have little influence on seasonal variation of microhabitat use in adult C. gobio , juveniles preferred deeper water and coarser substrata in winter, whereas in summer they appeared to use shallower water. There was a difference in microhabitat use between juvenile and adult bullhead only in summer.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. A study of microhabitat preferences was conducted on Zingel asper , an endangered endemic species from the Rhône catchment. A generalised linear model allowed us to test statistically the non-random habitat selection and the effect of season and site on this habitat selection.
2. The analysis detected significant preferences for the three physical variables considered: water depth, water velocity and substratum size.
3. A seasonal shift in the substratum size preference was found: preference for stones increasing during the spawning season. Depth preference varied between sites, suggesting a possible plasticity in habitat selection.
4. These results suggest that the availability of suitable physical habitat plays a significant role in determining fish distribution in the River Beaume.  相似文献

Microhabitat and plant structure of seven Batrachospermum populations (four of Batrachospermum delicatulum (=Sirodotia delicatula), one of Batrachospermum macrosporum and two of the ‘Chantransia’ stage), including the influence of physical variables (current velocity, depth, irradiance and substratum), were investigated in four streams of São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. The populations of B. delicatulum and the ‘Chantransia’ stage occurred under very diverse microhabitat conditions, which probably contributes to their wide spatial and seasonal distribution in Brazilian streams. Results suggest branch reconfiguration as a probable mechanism of adaptation to current velocity based on the occurrence of: (i) B. macrosporum (a large mucilaginous form with presumably little ability for branch reconfiguration) under lower current velocity than B. delicatulum; (ii) only dense plants in populations with high current velocities (> 60 cm s?1), whereas 53–77% of dense plants were seen in populations exposed to lower currents (< 40 cm s?1); (iii) positive correlations of plant length with internode length in populations under low current velocities and negative correlation in a population with high velocity (132 cm s?1); and (iv) negative correlations of current velocity with plant diameter and internode length in a population under high flow. This study, involving mainly dioecious populations, revealed that B. delicatulum displayed higher fertilization rates than B. macrosporum. A complementary explanation for a dioecious species to increase fertilization success was proposed consisting of outcrossing among intermingled male and female adjacent plants within an algal spot.  相似文献

The endemicity of schistosomiasis depends to a large extent on the presence of appropriate freshwater snail species with latent infection, and the quality of the microhabitat of the snails may favour or hinder their development and growth. Monthly in situ determinations of water temperature, pH, total dissolved solid (TDS), conductivity and dissolved oxygen were carried out. Monthly sampling of snails was also conducted. The planorbid snail species morphologically identified were Gyraulus costulatus, Biomphalaria pfeifferi, Bulinus globosus, B. senegalensis, B. jousseaumei, Segmentorbis augustus, Ferrisia sp and Lymnaea natalensis. The most abundant snail species was Gyraulus costulatus (62.2%). Snail density correlated positively with dissolved oxygen (r = 0.349; P = 0.266), while a negative relationship occurred between snail density and conductivity (r = ?0.064; P = 0.843). None of the B. globosus examined shed cercariae, while 12.5% of B. jousseaumei shed cercariae. The occurrence of B. jousseaumei in this study proves its presence in Nigeria and suggests its combined roles with B. globosus in the transmission of urogenital schistosomiasis in the endemic rural communities of Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. Further studies on the geographical distribution of B. jousseaumei are recommended for better understanding of its epidemiological contribution to schistosomiasis in Nigeria.  相似文献

Terrestrial snails choose their microhabitat according to anumber of environmental factors. We evaluated the effect oflight intensity and substratum complexity on microhabitat preferenceof the terrestrial snail Helix aspersa using a multi-factorialdesign. The snails were offered two levels of light intensityand two types of structural complexity, hence 16 treatmentsin total were used: 12 in which choice was offered and 4 inwhich no choice was offered. The snails preferred ambient lightover dim light, regardless of substratum complexity, and complexover smooth substrata, regardless of light intensity. The levelof one factor did not affect the response to the other. Thus,the results revealed a preference for microhabitats with greaterlight intensity and that were structurally complex, and a rejectionof dimly lit microhabitats with smooth substrates. The compatibility between strains of Schistosoma mansoni from Egypt, Kenya, Sudan, Uganda, the West Indies, and Zaire (two strains which came from Katanga and from Kinshasa), and various species and strains of Biomphalaria, i.e. Biomphalaria pfeifferi, B. alexandrina, B. glabrata and B. camerunensis was investigated. Data as mortality, rate of infection of the surviving snails, duration of infection, cercarial production per day per positive snail, etc., were observed. The main emphasis was placed on determining the total cercarial production per 100 exposed snails for each snail population. It was possible to infect all the tested populations of B pfeifferi with the various strains of S. mansoni, but the observation as e.g. TCP/100 exposed snails varied greatly according to the population of snail and the strain of S. mansoni. The results for the remaining species of Biomphalaria varied greatly, depending on the combination, e.g. B. alexandrina was only susceptible to the local S. mansoni from Egypt. The highest TCP/100 exposed snails was more than 1 million for the strains of S. mansoni from Egypt, Kenya and the West Indies in B. alexandrina, B. pfeifferi and B. glabrata, respectively. The next group, with a TCP/100 exposed snails on 7--800 000 consists of S. mansoni from Sudan, Uganda and Zaire (Katanga) all in B. pfeifferi. The last tested strain of S. mansoni, Zaire (Kinshasa) yielded a cercarial production on 500 000 per 100 exposed snails in B. pfeifferi and B. camerunensis. The shortest prepatent period, 19 days, was observed for S. mansoni from Kinshasa, Zaire, in B. camerunensis, and the longest prepatent period, 25 days, was found for strains from Egypt and from the West Indies in B. alexandrina and B. glabrata, respectively. In general, a very long duration of infection, lasting up to 200 days, was observed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that positive rheotaxis and anti-detachment behaviors contribute to the persistence of Pomacea canaliculata in lotic environments. This invasive apple snail is commonly considered a lentic dweller. In a first series of trials in a laboratory flume, current velocity was gradually increased until snails’ detachment. Detachment velocity was highly variable, with some snails able to withstand strong currents during short periods. Sexually undifferentiated snails were the most resistant to detachment; most of the snails that resisted high velocities were facing flow before detachment. In a second series of trials, snails’ net displacement was estimated at three fixed velocities (0, 0.15, and 0.30 m s−1). Current velocity did not influence mean net displacement, which was not different from zero. Marked snails were released in a stream and recaptured 24 h later estimating their net displacement. Most recovered snails dispersed a short distance from the release point and crawled through sites with very low current velocities. A small proportion of snails drifted downstream, indicating the existence of different dispersal mechanisms. Snails were able to resist current velocities that are among the highest recorded in streams in the Pampas region. P. canaliculata did not show a positive rheotactic response; in flowing water, snails crawl more often upstream, but at a slower pace than downstream. At the population level, a slow upstream spread seems possible in plain’s streams, probably being enough to compensate drift, but not to colonize headwaters. Irrigation systems are feasible pathways for the spread of this species in invaded regions.  相似文献

The swimming performance and associated swimming behaviour (i.e. substratum‐skimming, station‐holding and free swimming) were assessed in shortnose sturgeon Acipenser brevirostrum during critical swimming and endurance swimming tests over a rough and a smooth substratum. It was hypothesized that the addition of a rough substratum in the swimming flume may provide a surface for the A. brevirostrum to grip and offer an energetic advantage. Substratum type did not affect the critical swimming performance, but A. brevirostrum consistently performed more bottom behaviours (i.e. substratum‐skimming and station‐holding) while on a smooth substratum. Acipenser brevirostrum had little contact with the rough substratum until the velocity was >1 body length s?1. Endurance swimming time was significantly lower for A. brevirostrum over the rough bottom at the highest velocity (30 cm s?1) which may be attributed to the observed increase in free swimming and decrease in bottom behaviours. During endurance swimming, the rough substratum was mainly used at intermediate velocities, suggesting that there may be a stability cost associated with being in contact with the rough substratum at certain velocities.  相似文献

We have investigated the effects of three current velocities and three substrate sizes (gravel to cobble) on the spawning behavior of Japanese dace, Tribolodon hakonensis, in spawning-induction and habitat-selection experiments. In the spawning-induction experiment under laboratory conditions the number of females induced to spawn was significantly fewer at low current velocity (ca. 5 cm s–1) than at medium (ca. 30 cm s–1) or high (ca. 50 cm s–1) current velocity. Females spawned independently of substrate size in the experimental tank, and did not bury their eggs in the substrate bed. In the habitat-selection experiment under field conditions, females selected the substrate microhabitat and spawned more frequently at a site with medium substrate size (very coarse gravel; major axis ca. 40 mm) than at sites with small (fine gravel; ca. 8 mm) or large (cobble; ca. 70 mm) substrate size. We conclude that Japanese dace select spawning sites at least partly on the basis of current velocity and substrate size, which affects the survival rate of eggs.  相似文献

Estimates of numbers, biomass, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates were made quarterly over a two-year period to investigate microhabitat preferences. Although biomass of most taxa was significantly different among sampling times, physical factors also appeared to be important in determining abundance of many taxa. Optimum depth, velocity, substrate type, and turbulence were determined for major taxa. Optimum conditions for diversity appeared to be 34 cm depth, 60 cm s?1 velocity, and rubble and boulder substrate type. Habitat preference functions were derived for several taxa based on significant polynomial regressions of biomass on depth, velocity, substrate, and Froude number (turbulence). The relationship between abundance and physical habitat conditions was tested by using the product of the preference factors (range: 0–1) for depth, velocity and substrate type as a measure of habitat suitability (joint preference factor). There were significant correlations between biomass [transformed by loge (x + 1)] of 10 benthic species and the joint preference factor. The joint preference factors accounted for from 11 to 61% of the variation of biomass of the 10 benthic species. The intercepts of the relationships between biomass of individual species and the joint preference factor were not significantly different from zero for any species. Therefore, the joint preference factors appear to be valid indicators of biomass. The preference functions have utility in habitat assessment studies, specifically with regard to minimum instream flow determinations.  相似文献

Colour-coded artificial trout eggs were used in investigations of washout depth in a natural stream and of drift distance relative to water velocity in an experimental channel and in a section of natural stream.Washout depth was studied in a spawning riffle of a stream whose bankful discharge is 5.6 m3 s–1. During an experiment when spates never exceeded 6.5 m3 s–1 egg washout was severe at 5 cm depth within the gravel, variable at 10 cm and negligible at 15 cm. During another experiment when a spate of 9.0 m3 s–1 (return period 10–20 years) occurred, washout was severe at 5 and 10 cm depth and variable at 15 cm. There was also evidence that some eggs were moved short distances downstream within the gravel without being washed out.Within experimental channels, drift distance could be predicted from multiple regressions relating logarithms of water velocity, percentage of eggs settled and distance from point of release. At a water velocity of 100 cm s–1 at 0.6 depth, 50% of eggs would settle within 8 m of the point of release. At water velocities of 75 to 100 cm s–1 drifting eggs would, on average, travel at c. 60% of water velocity and make 1 to 2 bed contacts m–1 of travel.A similar multiple regression can be applied to data from a natural stream channel. It predicts much larger drift distances (50% settled in 42 m at 100 cm s –1 ). However, in the natural channel, settlement appears aggregated and the validity of the concept of permanent settlement is in doubt.  相似文献

The pattern of microhabitat preferences of Ukrainian brook lamprey Eudontomyzon mariae ammocoetes was examined in two rivers of central Poland: the Pilica River (the Vistula River basin) and the Grabia River (the Odra River basin). A comparison of abiotic factors of the rivers revealed differences in water speed and principal components: PC1 (determining gradient from decreasing medium sand to the increasing share of three fractions of gravel), PC2 (a gradient from the declining share of very coarse and coarse sand fractions to the growing content of fine sand) and PC3 (correlated with an increasing proportion of silt). The sites did not differ significantly in terms of water depth. Relative abundance and frequency of ammocoete occurrence in the Grabia River were higher than in the Pilica River. Only speed, PC1 and PC2 made a significant contribution to the prediction of larval occurrence. Eudontomyzon mariae larvae preferred substrata with a reduced amount of medium sand and increased content of gravel (PC1) as well as with a lower content of coarse sand and higher proportion of fine‐grained sand (PC2). The ammocoetes also preferred areas with a water speed of 0·2 m s?1 but avoided speeds ≥0·6 m s?1. The abundance of E. mariae was affected by water speed, as well as by all PCs. The mean ± s.e. optimal current speed was 0·265 ± 0·007 m s?1, while abundance decreased with increasing amounts of gravel (PC1) and increased with increasing amounts of fine sand and silt in the bottom substratum (PC2 and PC3). Comparison of ammocoete microhabitat use in the Pilica and Grabia Rivers showed the lack of differences in distribution in the preferred values of current speed, PC1 and PC2.  相似文献

Summary We examined microhabitat use in Barbus graellsii, Barbus haasi, Chondrostoma toxostoma, Rutilus arcasii, and Salmo gairdneri over a 19 month period in the upper Rio Matarraña, Spain. B. graellsii and Ch. toxostoma exhibited non-random microhabitat use during all seasons and preferentially occupied deep microhabitats with heterogeneous substrates. During the majority of seasons in which they were present, B. haasi and R. arcasii occurred in microhabitats similar to those occupied by B. graellsii and Ch. toxostoma. S. gairdneri was over-represented in high velocity microhabitats with erosional substrates. We did not observe any evidence of interspecific interference competition or avoidance. Substrate composition did not appear to affect microhabitat use outside of its covariation with depth and velocity. Seaonal variation in microhabitat use by B. graellsii, B. haasi and Ch. toxostoma was strongly correlated with seasonal changes in microhabitat availability. S. gairdneri, however, occurred closer to the substrate when average velocities were high. Larger B. graellsii and B. haasi sometimes occupied deeper, higher velocity microhabitats than did smaller specimens. Larger B. graellsii also occasionally occurred farther from shelter than did smaller specimens; the reverse was true for B. haasi. Larger Ch. toxostoma sometimes were found farther from both the substrate and shelter than smaller individuals, whereas smaller specimens occasionally inhabited deeper areas with more depositional substrates than did larger Ch. toxostoma. During Late Summer 1985, smaller Ch. toxostoma also occupied microhabitats with higher velocities than did larger specimens. A comparison of microhabitat use for two species present in both upper and lower portions of the Matarraña indicated that most differences in microhabitat use could be attributed to inter-site differences in microhabitat availability. The data suggest, hovever, that both species shifted to more protected microhabitats in the higher velocity site. Assemblage members generally occupied statistically distinguishable microhabitats and could be classified as: 1) high-velocity upper water column (S. gairdneri), 2) low velocity lower water column (B. graellsii, Ch. toxostoma and R. arcasii), and 3) shelter-oriented benthic (B. haasi). The introduction of S. gairdneri during Winter 1984 did not produce microhabitat shifts in any of the native species. Whether or not the native species affected microhabitat use in S. gairdneri is unknown. Interspecific competition for space, however, did not appear to strongly influence microhabitat use among the native species.  相似文献

Seasonal microhabitat selection by sympatric young Atlantic salmon and brown trout was studied by diving. Both species, especially Atlantic salmon, showed seasonal variation with respect to surface and mean water velocities and depth. This variation is partly attributed to varying water flows and water temperatures. In winter the fish sought shelter in the substratum. A spatial variation in habitat use along the river due to different habitat availabilities was observed. Both species occupied habitats within the ranges of the microhabitat variables, rather than selecting narrow optima. It is hypothesized that the genetic basis allows a certain range to the behavioural response. Microhabitat segregation between the two species was pronounced, with brown trout inhabiting the more slow-flowing and partly more shallow stream areas. Atlantic salmon tolerated a wider range of water velocities and depths. Habitat suitability curves were produced from both species. It is suggested that habitat suitability curves that are based on observations of fish occupancy of habitat at median or base flow may not be suitable in habitat simulation models, where available habitat is projected at substantially greater water flows.  相似文献

Some newly-settled bivalve molluscs can experience a second dispersal stage in the water column and colonize areas distant from initial settlement zone ('secondary settlement'). To document mechanisms involved in such a process, experiments were conducted in a recirculating 13-m flume, using juvenile cockles Cerastoderma edule (shell length between 0.8 and 5.7 mm). After 4 h and under current surface velocities of 10, 20 and 24 cm s?1, all juveniles left the plexiglass substratum (site of initial introduction) and 42.4, 58.6 and 76.2% of juveniles, respectively, were retrieved from a downstream sand area (which only represented 7.7% of the total flume surface). Naked-eye observations showed that smaller individuals were borne within the water column, whereas larger individuals tended to roll or slip on the substratum. Byssus threads produced by the juveniles were often seen, sometimes covered in sand grains. These observations were confirmed by finding larger juveniles in the upstream part of the sand area. When sand was replaced by mud, a reduced proportion of cockles was retrieved in the experimental substratum (18.4, 20.0 and 16.4%, respectively). Observations showed that juveniles rarely succeeded in anchoring themselves in mud. When initially introduced on a favourable substratum (medium sand), more than 87% of juveniles were retrieved from that sand array at all flow velocities. This study shows that secondary settlement occurs for juvenile cockles up to 5.7 mm in shell length and depends not only on flow velocity but on substratum type.  相似文献

Snail surveys were carried out in various parts of Mali. All areas surveyed are part of the Niger basin being either affluents or irrigation schemes fed by this river. The snail species present varied greatly between areas. The following potential hosts of schistosomes were recorded: Biomphalaria pfeifferi, Bulinus truncatus, B. globosus, B. umbilicatus, B. forskalii and B. senegalensis. In the large irrigation schemes, i.e. ‘Office du Niger’ and Baguinéda, only B. pfeifferi and B. truncatus appear to be intermediate hosts. Snail distribution appeared to some extent to be focal and high snail densities appeared to be associated with human water contact activities, which apparently create favourable biotopes for the snails. This is probably due to an alteration of the vegetation and an increase of the trophic status of the site by contamination with food remnants and other debris. The larger irrigation canals or lakes in these schemes play an important role in the transmission of human schistosomes and transmission appears to be very focal in these habitats. Infected snails are almost exclusively found in well-defined human water contact sites (WCS). Local infection rates with schistosomes were often high (i.e. up to 27% in B. pfeifferi). In urban areas (i.e. Bamako), transmission patterns are more variable. In Bamako schistosome-infected B. truncatus were found in the Niger river. A number of smaller semi-permanent or permanent streams are very important transmission sites, and schistosome infections were recorded from B. pfeifferi, B. truncatus and B. globosus. Schistosome infection rates in B. pfeifferi were often high (up to 30%). In a new lake at Sélingué, B. truncatus was found to be widely distributed only about a year and a half after the dam was constructed, and in some sites schistosome infections were recorded.  相似文献

Corallivorous gastropods of the genus Drupella are known for population outbreaks throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Despite their potential to destroy wide areas of coral reef, prey preferences have never been analyzed with respect to prey availability, and juvenile ecology and food selectivity remain largely unknown. Here, the influence of water depth, coral abundance, colony shape, prey species, and intraspecific attraction among snails on distribution patterns, prey selection, and microhabitat use of D. cornus was studied in the northern Red Sea. Special emphasis was put on ontogenetic differences. The snails were most abundant in the shallowest reef zone (1 m depth). Adults were associated with several substrates and coral growth forms, whereas juveniles were highly cryptic and restricted to live branching corals. The genus Acropora was significantly preferred over other acroporid and pocilloporid corals. As revealed by resource selection ratios, Acropora acuminata was preferred by juveniles, A. selago by adults. In aquarium experiments, intraspecific attraction was high among both life stages. Overall, significant differences in juvenile and adult microhabitat and prey use suggest that juveniles have more specific habitat requirements, and indicate ecological impacts on coral communities different from that of adults. Prey preferences seem to depend on both coral genus and colony shape. Acropora corals provide the best combination of food and shelter and therefore determine distribution patterns of D. cornus.  相似文献

Surfacing and water-leaving behaviour (quitting) of aquaticpulmonate snails was investigated in the laboratory. Regressioncoefficients of surfacing rate per hour for 16 snails in 200cm3 of water were 1.28 for L. peregra, 1.35 for B. glabrata(albino form), 0.47 for B. glabrata (pigmented form) and 0.17for B. jousseaumei. Disturbance, snail size and conditioningof the water were relatively unimportant factors; water volumeadjusted by depth was also unimportant up to 50 mm depth. Importantfactors controlling surfacing appeared to be population density,time of year, temperature, water volume adjusted by perimeterand dissolved oxygen concentration. The response to the latterwas not clear and both B. glabrata and L. peregra orientatedalmost as well to a nitrogen/water interface as to an air/waterinterface. Water-quitting regressed on volume, which had beenadjusted by perimeter variation, revealed a curvilinear relationshipfor B. glabrata, with maximum quitting at 1 snail per 7cm3 (1snail per 14cm of climbable perimeter). L. peregra showed anegative exponential curve, with maximum quitting at 1 snailper 3 cm3 of water (1 snail per 8 cm of climbable perimeter).These data could be relevant to design and management of irrigationchannels where bilharzia might occur.
