Floristic composition, morphological functional types, and altitudinal distribution pattern for C4 species were studied in Yunnan province, South-western China. 159 species, in 6 families and 60 genera, were identified with C4 photosynthesis. 93 % of these C4 species were found in Monocotyledoneae, e.g. Cyperaceae (18 species), Gramineae (129 species), and Commelinaceae (1 species), the other 7 % was in Dicotyledoneae, e.g. Amaranthaceae (5 species), Portulacaceae (4 species), and Chenopodiaceae (2 species). Hence C4 plants mainly occurred in very few families in the tropical region. Compared with those in semi-arid grasslands and arid deserts in North China, more C4 grasses and much less Chenopodiaceae C4 species occurred in the tropical region. This indicates the physiological responses of C4 plants from the two families are very different. Chenopodiaceae C4 species may be more fit semi-arid and arid environments, while C4 grasses are more fit the moist tropical conditions. There was a strong relationship between C4 distribution and altitude in the tropical region. Altitudinal distribution pattern for C4 species in the region was consistent with altitude, climate, and habitats.  相似文献

Plants using the C4 photosynthetic pathway have greater water use efficiency (WUE) than C3 plants of similar ecological function. Consequently, for equivalent rates of photosynthesis in identical climates, C4 plants do not need to acquire and transport as much water as C3 species. Because the structure of xylem tissue reflects hydraulic demand by the leaf canopy, a reduction in water transport requirements due to C4 photosynthesis should affect the evolution of xylem characteristics in C4 plants. In a comparison of stem hydraulic conductivity and vascular anatomy between eight C3 and eight C4 herbaceous species, C4 plants had lower hydraulic conductivity per unit leaf area (KL) than C3 species of similar life form. When averages from all the species were pooled together, the mean KL for the C4 species was 1.60 × 10?4 kg m?1 s?1 MPa?1, which was only one‐third of the mean KL of 4.65 × 10?4 kg m?1 s?1 MPa?1 determined for the C3 species. The differences in KL between C3 and C4 species corresponded to the two‐ to three‐fold differences in WUE observed between C3 and C4 plants. In the C4 species from arid regions, the difference in KL was associated with a lower hydraulic conductivity per xylem area, smaller and shorter vessels, and less vulnerable xylem to cavitation, indicating the C4 species had evolved safer xylem than the C3 species. In the plants from resource‐rich areas, such as the C4 weed Amaranthus retroflexus, hydraulic conductivity per xylem area and xylem anatomy were similar to that of the C3 species, but the C4 plants had greater leaf area per xylem area. The results indicate the WUE advantage of C4 photosynthesis allows for greater flexibility in hydraulic design and potential fitness. In resource‐rich environments in which competition is high, an existing hydraulic design can support greater leaf area, allowing for higher carbon gain, growth and competitive potential. In arid regions, C4 plants evolved safer xylem, which can increase survival and performance during drought events.  相似文献

Abstract. The significance of blue light-stimulated stomatal conductance for carbon assimilation (A), stomatal conductance (g), intercellular CO2 (Ci), stomatal limitation of A (L), transpiration (E) and water use efficiency (W = A/E), was determined in a C4 and a C3 species. W and L were evaluated for steady-state gas exchange with constant, saturating red light (As, gs, Es), and for the integrated gas exchange above the steady state baseline induced by a single, brief pulse of blue light (Ap, gp, Ep). Sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrid), a C4 grass, and soybean (Glycine max) a C3 dicot, were compared. Sugarcane exhibited typical C4 behaviour, with A saturing at Ci of ca. 200 μmol mol?1, compared to >500 μmol mol?1 in soybean. Steady-state W was also considerably higher in sugarcane. The extent of stomatal opening in response to a blue light pulse, from baseline (gs) to the maximum value of conductance during the opening response (gm), was similar in the two species. More rapid opening and closing of stomata in sugarcane resulted in a smaller integrated magnitude of the conductance response (gp) than in soybean. At the peak of the blue light response, both species exhibited similar levels of L. During the response to the pulse of blue light, A and Ci increased and L decreased to a greater extent in sugarcane than in soybean. As a result, the gas exchange attributed to the stomatal response to blue light exhibited a higher ratio of Ap to Ep (Wp) in sugarcane than in soybean. This Wp was lower in both species than was the Ws associated with the steady state gas exchange. The two species did not differ in the rate of induction of photosynthetic utilization of elevated Ci. The greater stimulation of A in sugarcane was attributed to its C4 attributes of greater carboxylation efficiency (slope of the A versus Ci relationship), lower gs and prevailing Ci,s, and greater Ls under steady-state red illumination. Despite saturation of A at low levels of Ci in C4 species, the gas exchange attributed to the stomatal response to blue light decreased L and contributed considerably to carbon acquisition, while maintaining the high level of W associated with C4 metabolism.  相似文献

The diffusive conductance (Cs) of rice (Oryza sativa cvs Jaya and Bala) leaves was measured during a soil drying cycle from flooding to decreasing soil water potential (φs) in a controlled-environment chamber. Plants were grown continuously under 5 cm submergence up to 69 days after transplanting and thereafter were subjected to gradual soil drying for a period of 17 days in the vegetative growth stage. In both the cultivars, the values of Cs were generally more on adaxial than abaxial leaf surfaces. This response of stomata during the period of soil drying was independent of leaf rolling. Further, the slopes of the curves (Cs, vs φs) also did not differ significantly (P= 0·05). The total Cs, of both cultivars during flooding was almost equal (0·60 cm s-1) but at the end of the soil drying cycle, the values of total Cs, were 0·11 cm s-l at ψs of -1·3 MPa and 0·08 cm s-1 at ψs, of -0·8 MPa in cvs Jaya and Bala, respectively. For total Cs, slopes differed significantly (P = 0·05). A close relationship between total Cs, and ψs, in both cultivars (Cs, = 0·58-0·40 ψs, for cv. Jaya and Cs= 0·46-0·56 ψs, for cv. Bala) indicated that stomata were sensitive to increasing soil water deficit.  相似文献

Floristic composition, life forms for C4 species, and the pattern of altitude distribution were studied on Tibetan Plateau. 79 species, in 7 families and 46 genera, were identified with C4 photosynthesis. 95 % of these C4 species belong to Gramineae (51 species), Cyperaceae (14 species), and Chenopodiaceae (10 species), indicating that C4 plants mainly occur in very few families (7 of 204) on the Tibetan Plateau. High altitude distribution for all the Chenopodiaceae C4 species (> 3 000 m above sea level) suggests that plants of this kind have large tolerance to cold, dryness, and strong ultraviolet radiation. Most Gramineae and Cyperaceae C4 species occurrences are consistent with extensive distribution of steppes and meadows in the vast flat of the central Plateau (1 000–3 000 m a.s.l.). Relatively high amount of hemicryptophyte form plants (44 %) in the region indicates that the vegetation, especially grassland, meadows, and steppe, are in good condition. There is a strong relationship between numbers of C4 species and altitude in the Tibetan Plateau. Occurrence of C4 species is significantly less in both high and low altitude plateaux in Tibet. Altitude distribution pattern for C4 species in the region is not only consistent with the altitude and climate, but also with the vegetation types in altitude gradient.  相似文献

Plant hydraulic conductance (ks) is a critical control on whole‐plant water use and carbon uptake and, during drought, influences whether plants survive or die. To assess long‐term physiological and hydraulic responses of mature trees to water availability, we manipulated ecosystem‐scale water availability from 2007 to 2013 in a piñon pine (Pinus edulis) and juniper (Juniperus monosperma) woodland. We examined the relationship between ks and subsequent mortality using more than 5 years of physiological observations, and the subsequent impact of reduced hydraulic function and mortality on total woody canopy transpiration (EC) and conductance (GC). For both species, we observed significant reductions in plant transpiration (E) and ks under experimentally imposed drought. Conversely, supplemental water additions increased E and ks in both species. Interestingly, both species exhibited similar declines in ks under the imposed drought conditions, despite their differing stomatal responses and mortality patterns during drought. Reduced whole‐plant ks also reduced carbon assimilation in both species, as leaf‐level stomatal conductance (gs) and net photosynthesis (An) declined strongly with decreasing ks. Finally, we observed that chronically low whole‐plant ks was associated with greater canopy dieback and mortality for both piñon and juniper and that subsequent reductions in woody canopy biomass due to mortality had a significant impact on both daily and annual canopy EC and GC. Our data indicate that significant reductions in ks precede drought‐related tree mortality events in this system, and the consequence is a significant reduction in canopy gas exchange and carbon fixation. Our results suggest that reductions in productivity and woody plant cover in piñon–juniper woodlands can be expected due to reduced plant hydraulic conductance and increased mortality of both piñon pine and juniper under anticipated future conditions of more frequent and persistent regional drought in the southwestern United States.  相似文献

Abstract An investigation was carried out into the water relations of CAM and C3 bromeliads in their natural habitat during the dry season in Trinidad. Measurements were made of xylem tension with the pressure chamber and of cell-sap osmotic pressure and titratable acidity on crushed leaf samples. A steady-state CO2 and H2O-vapour porometer was also used so that changes in leaf water relations during individual day-night cycles could be directly related to gas-exchange patterns in situ. Xylem tension changed in parallel with transpiration rate and in general reached its maximum value in CAM bromeliads at night and in C3 bromeliads during the day. In addition, large nocturnal increases in cell-sap osmotic pressure and titratable acidity (ΔH+) typically occurred in the CAM bromeliads. The C3-CAM intermediate Guzmania monostachia showed slight nocturnal acidification, but had higher values of xylem tension during the day. Very high values of AH+ were observed in the CAM species when the tanks of the epiphytic bromeliads contained water: Aechmea nudicaulis showed a mean maximum ΔH+ of 474 mol m?3, the highest value so far observed for CAM plants. On some nights dew formed on the leaf surfaces of the epiphytes, partially curtailing gas exchange and leading to a marked decrease in xylem tension in both C3 and CAM species. Between-site comparisons were also made for a wide range of habitats from arid coastal scrub to montane rain forest. Compared with values characteristic of other life-forms, xylem tension and cell-sap osmotic pressure were low for all bromeliads, and did not differ significantly in co-occurring CAM and C3 bromeliads. Mean maximum xylem tension (10 species in total) ranged from 0.29 M Pa at the montane sites to 0.67 MPa at the most arid site, and mean minimum osmotic pressure (17 species) from 0.51 to 0.97 MPa. At the arid sites the bromeliads were exclusively CAM species, two of which (Aechmea aquilega and Bromelia plumieri) grew terrestrially in the undergrowth of the coastal scrub. Xylem tension in these species was low enough to indicate that they must be functionally independent of the substratum during the dry season. In the wetter part of Trinidad, no between-site differences in leaf water relations were found along an altitudinal gradient in the Northern Mountain Range; seasonal differences in this area were also small. Overall, leaf water relations and gas exchange in the bromeliads were strongly affected both by short-term changes in water availability and by longer-term climatic differences in the various regions of the island.  相似文献

Xylem structure and function is proposed to reflect an evolutionary balance between demands for efficient movement of water to the leaf canopy and resistance to cavitation during high xylem tension. Water use efficiency (WUE) affects this balance by altering the water cost of photosynthesis. Therefore species of greater WUE, such as C4 plants, should have altered xylem properties. To evaluate this hypothesis, we assessed the hydraulic and anatomical properties of 19 C3 and C4 woody species from arid regions of the American west and central Asia. Specific conductivity of stem xylem (Ks ) was 16%–98% lower in the C4 than C3 shrubs from the American west. In the Asian species, the C3 Nitraria schoberi had similar and Halimodendron halodendron higher Ks values compared with three C4 species. Leaf specific conductivity (KL ; hydraulic conductivity per leaf area) was 60%–98% lower in the C4 than C3 species, demonstrating that the presence of the C4 pathway alters the relationship between leaf area and the ability of the xylem to transport water. C4 species produced similar or smaller vessels than the C3 shrubs except in Calligonum, and most C4 shrubs exhibited higher wood densities than the C3 species. Together, smaller conduit size and higher wood density indicate that in most cases, the C4 shrubs exploited higher WUE by altering xylem structure to enhance safety from cavitation. In a minority of cases, the C4 shrubs maintained similar xylem properties but enhanced the canopy area per branch. By establishing a link between C4 photosynthesis and xylem structure, this study indicates that other phenomena that affect WUE, such as atmospheric CO2 variation, may also affect the evolution of wood structure and function.  相似文献

Yields of wheat in semiarid and arid zones are limited by drought, and water condition is very important at each stage of development. Studies carried out at Loess Plateau in the northwestern part of China indicated that yield of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Dingxi 81-392 was reduced by 41% when subjected to water stress. The effects of two water regimens on net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) were investigated at the jointing, booting, anthesis, and grain filling stages. Low soil moisture in comparison to adequate one had invariably reduced P N during the diurnal variations at the four growth stages. P N and g s in both soil moisture regimes was maximally reduced at midday. C i and the stomatal limitation fluctuated remarkably during photosynthesis midday depression processes, especially at the grain filling stage. Hence atmospheric drought at midday was one of the direct causes inducing stomata closure and the g s depression, but it was beneficial for maintaining stable intrinsic water use efficiency. Fluctuation in C i implicated that non-stomatal limitation also plays an important role during the period of photosynthesis midday depression. Consequently stomatal and/or non-stomatal limitation are the possible cause of the midday photosynthesis decline.  相似文献

Reestablishing cool‐season (C3) grass communities on low elevation rangelands of the Colorado Plateau is notoriously difficult, raising questions about the viability of restoring native species and continuing to actively graze these landscapes. We conducted a seeding experiment on an arid (15.4 cm rain/year), historically heavily‐grazed rangeland in Northern Arizona to test the effects of seeding technique and simulated seasonal climate scenarios on germination and recruitment of four species of native, cool‐season bunchgrasses: Achnatherum hymenoides, Hesperostipa comata, Poa secunda, and Elymus elymoides. Initial results indicated that C3 grasses germinated significantly more in drill‐seeded treatments under simulated high precipitation years than in other treatment types. Five years post‐treatment, P. secunda and E. elymoides were not observed but simulated drill‐seeded treatments, had significantly higher densities of A. hymenoides and H. comata recruits relative to most other treatment types. Simulated drill seeding also increased soil disturbance which increased the establishment of the invasive weed Salsola tragus in year 1, but not thereafter. Although it appears critical to coordinate effective seeding techniques with high winter–spring precipitation, predicting such events may not be possible at some sites, suggesting that seeding low elevation, arid rangelands of the Colorado Plateau may not always be realistic under a future climate that is drier and less predictable .  相似文献

Floristic composition, morphological functional types and habitat distributions for C4 species were studied in Xinjiang, North-western China. 89 species, in 9 families and 41 genera, were identified with C4 photosynthesis. 48 % of these C4 species were found in Monocotyledoneae, e.g. Cyperaceae (5 species), Gramineae (38 species), the other 52 % was in Dicotyledoneae, e.g. Chenopodiaceae (29 species), Amaranthaceae (7 species), and Polygonaceae (5 species). Compared with those in semi-arid grasslands in North China and tropical forests in South China, more plant families were found with the occurrence of C4 plants in this arid region. Relatively higher annual species (63 %), shrubs (18 %), and Chenopodiaceae C4 species (33 %) compositions were the primary characteristics for the C4 species occurring in Xinjiang, and this was remarkably related with its arid environment. More Chenopodiaceae C4 species occurring in the region suggested that this type of C4 species may have higher capacity to fit the air and soil droughts. There was a strong relationship between C4 occurrence and habitat distributions, more than half of the total 89 C4 species were found in disturbed and cultivated lands and early stages of vegetation successions, indicating C4 occurrence was not only related with climate changes, but also with land uses and vegetation dynamics.  相似文献

Biological soil crusts (BSCs) are thought to be important in the fertility of arid lands as gateways for carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). Studies on the Colorado Plateau have shown that an incomplete internal N cycle operates in BSCs that results in significant exports of dissolved organic N, ammonia and nitrate into the bulk soil through percolating water, thus mechanistically explaining their role as a N gateway. It is not known if this pattern is found in other arid regions. To examine this, we measured rates of major biogeochemical N-transformations in a variety of BSCs collected from the Colorado Plateau and the Mojave, Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts. Dinitrogen fixation and aerobic ammonia oxidation were prominent transformations at all sites. We found anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) rates to be below the detection limit in all cases, and at least 50-fold smaller than rates of N2-fixation, making it an irrelevant process for these BSCs. Heterotrophic denitrification was also of little consequence for the flow of N, with rates at least an order of magnitude smaller than those of N2-fixation. Thus we could confirm that despite the demonstrable differences in microbial community composition and soil material, BSCs from major biogeographic regions in arid North America displayed a remarkably consistent pattern of internal N cycling. The implications for arid land fertility drawn from previous studies in the Colorado Plateau appear applicable to BSCs across other arid regions of the Southwestern United States.  相似文献

Elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) is expected to reduce the impacts of drought and increase photosynthetic rates via two key mechanisms: first, through decreased stomatal conductance (gs) and increased soil water content (VSWC) and second, through increased leaf internal CO2 (Ci) and decreased stomatal limitations (Slim). It is unclear if such findings from temperate grassland studies similarly pertain to warmer ecosystems with periodic water deficits. We tested these mechanisms in three important C3 herbaceous species in a periodically dry Eucalyptus woodland and investigated how eCO2‐induced photosynthetic enhancement varied with seasonal water availability, over a 3 year period. Leaf photosynthesis increased by 10%–50% with a 150 μmol mol?1 increase in atmospheric CO2 across seasons. This eCO2‐induced increase in photosynthesis was a function of seasonal water availability, given by recent precipitation and mean daily VSWC. The highest photosynthetic enhancement by eCO2 (>30%) was observed during the most water‐limited period, for example, with VSWC <0.07 in this sandy surface soil. Under eCO2 there was neither a significant decrease in gs in the three herbaceous species, nor increases in VSWC, indicating no “water‐savings effect” of eCO2. Periods of low VSWC showed lower gs (less than ≈ 0.12 mol m?2 s?1), higher relative Slim (>30%) and decreased Ci under the ambient CO2 concentration (aCO2), with leaf photosynthesis strongly carboxylation‐limited. The alleviation of Slim by eCO2 was facilitated by increasing Ci, thus yielding a larger photosynthetic enhancement during dry periods. We demonstrated that water availability, but not eCO2, controls gs and hence the magnitude of photosynthetic enhancement in the understory herbaceous plants. Thus, eCO2 has the potential to alter vegetation functioning in a periodically dry woodland understory through changes in stomatal limitation to photosynthesis, not by the “water‐savings effect” usually invoked in grasslands.  相似文献

Environmental and physiological regulation of transpiration were examined in several gap-colonizing shrub and tree species during two consecutive dry seasons in a moist, lowland tropical forest on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Whole plant transpiration, stomatal and total vapor phase (stomatal + boundary layer) conductance, plant water potential and environmental variables were measured concurrently. This allowed control of transpiration (E) to be partitioned quantitatively between stomatal (g s) and boundary layer (g b) conductance and permitted the impact of invividual environmental and physiological variables on stomatal behavior and E to be assessed. Wind speed in treefall gap sites was often below the 0.25 m s–1 stalling speed of the anemometer used and was rarely above 0.5 m s–1, resulting in uniformly low g b (c. 200–300 mmol m–2 s–1) among all species studied regardless of leaf size. Stomatal conductance was typically equal to or somewhat greater than g b. This strongly decoupled E from control by stomata, so that in Miconia argentea a 10% change in g s when g s was near its mean value was predicted to yield only a 2.5% change in E. Porometric estimates of E, obtained as the product of g s and the leaf-bulk air vapor pressure difference (VPD) without taking g b into account, were up to 300% higher than actual E determined from sap flow measurements. Porometry was thus inadequate as a means of assessing the physiological consequences of stomatal behavior in different gap colonizing species. Stomatal responses to humidity strongly limited the increase in E with increasing evaporative demand. Stomata of all species studied appeared to respond to increasing evaporative demand in the same manner when the leaf surface was selected as the reference point for determination of external vapor pressure and when simultaneous variation of light and leaf-air VPD was taken into account. This result suggests that contrasting stomatal responses to similar leaf-bulk air VPD may be governed as much by the external boundary layer as by intrinsic physiological differences among species. Both E and g s initially increased sharply with increasing leaf area-specific total hydraulic conductance of the soil/root/leaf pathway (G t), becoming asymptotic at higher values of G t. For both E and g s a unique relationship appeared to describe the response of all species to variations in G t. The relatively weak correlation observed between g s and midday leaf water potential suggested that stomatal adjustment to variations in water availability coordinated E with water transport efficiency rather than bulk leaf water status.  相似文献

The carbon dioxide concentrating system in C4 photosynthesis allows high net photosynthetic rates (P N) at low internal carbon dioxide concentrations (C i), permitting higher P N relative to stomatal conductance (g s) than in C3 plants. This relation would be reflected in the ratio of C i to external ambient (C a) carbon dioxide concentration, which is often given as 0.3 or 0.4 for C4 plants. For a C a of 360 μmol mol−1 that would mean a C i about 110–140 μmol mol−1. Our field observations made near midday on three weedy C4 species, Amaranthus retroflexus, Echinochloa crus-galli, and Setaria faberi, and the C4 crop Sorghum bicolor indicated mean values of C i of 183–212 μ mol mol−1 at C a = 360 μmol mol−1. Measurements in two other C4 crop species grown with three levels of N fertilizer indicated that while midday values of C i at high photon flux were higher at limiting N, even at high nitrogen C i averaged 212 and 196 μmol mol−1 for Amaranthus hypochondriacus and Zea mays, respectively. In these two crops midday C i decreased with increasing leaf to air water vapor pressure difference. Averaged over all measurement days, the mean C i across all C4 species was 198 μmol mol−1, for a C i/C a ratio of 0.55. Prior measurements on four herbaceous C3 species using the same instrument indicated an average C i/C a ratio of 0.69. Hence midday C i values in C 4 species under field conditions may often be considerably higher and more similar to those of C3 species than expected from measurements made on plants in controlled environments. Reducing g s in C4 crops at low water vapor pressure differences could potentially improve their water use efficiency without decreasing P N.  相似文献

About 20-year-old desert plants of C4 species, Haloxylon ammodendron, growing at the southern edge of the Badain Jaran Desert in China, were selected to study the photosynthetic characteristics and changes in chlorophyll fluorescence when plants were subject to a normal arid environment (AE), moist atmospheric conditions during post-rain (PR), and the artificial supplement of soil water (SW). Results showed that under high radiation, in the AE, the species down-regulated its net assimilation rate (A) and maximum photochemical efficiency of PS II (Fv/Fm), indicating photoinhibition. However, under the PR and SW environments, A was up-regulated, with a unimodal diurnal course of A and a small diurnal change in Fv/Fm, suggesting no photoinhibition. When the air humidity or SW content was increased, the light compensation points were reduced; light saturation points were enhanced; while light saturated rate of CO2 assimilation (A max) and apparent quantum yield of CO2 assimilation (ΦC) increased. ΦC was higher while the A max was reduced under PR relative to the SW treatment. It was concluded that under high-radiation conditions drought stress causes photoinhibition of H. ammodendron. Increasing air humidity or soil moisture content can reduce photoinhibition and increase the efficiency of solar energy use.  相似文献

Aim Based on the biochemical and physiological attributes of C4 grasses, and on the close association between decarboxylation pathways and the taxa in which they evolved, the hypotheses tested were: (1) that C4 grasses would become progressively more abundant as precipitation decreased, with grasses of the NADP‐me subtype more abundant in wetter sites and those of the NAD‐me subtype more common in arid regions; and (2) that the distribution of grass subfamilies would also be correlated with annual precipitation. Location The study was conducted along a precipitation gradient in central Argentina, from the eastern Pampas (>1000 mm year?1) to the western deserts and semi‐deserts near the Andes (<100 mm year?1). Methods Percentage of species and relative cover of C3 and C4 grasses (including C4 subtypes) in local floras from 15 lowland sites of central Argentina were obtained from our own unpublished data and from recently published floristic surveys. Pearson correlation coefficients were obtained between grass distribution parameters and the available climatic data. Results The percentage of C4 grasses increased towards the arid extreme and showed a strong negative correlation with annual rainfall (r = ?0.74, P < 0.01). Within the C4 subtypes, the NADP‐me species showed a higher proportional representation at the wetter extreme, whereas the representation of NAD‐me species increased towards the more arid extreme. The relationship of PEP‐ck species with climatic parameters in central Argentina was less evident. The distributions of the Panicoideae and Chloridoideae subfamilies along the precipitation gradient were diametrically opposed, with the Panicoideae positively (r = 0.86, P < 0.001) and the Chloridoideae negatively (r = ?0.87, P < 0.001) correlated with annual precipitation. Main conclusions Our data are consistent with the broad observation that C4 grasses tend to dominate in areas where the wet season falls in the warmer summer months. In agreement with previously reported results for Africa, Asia, Australia and North America, we describe here for the first time a significant relationship between annual precipitation and the prevalence of the NADP‐me and NAD‐me photosynthetic pathways along climatic gradients for the Neotropics. We also report for the first time that correlations between C4 species and annual rainfall are stronger when the relative cover of grass species is considered. The association of grass subfamilies Panicoideae and Chloridoideae with rainfall is as strong as that recorded for the NADP‐me and NAD‐me variants, respectively, suggesting that characteristics other than decarboxylation type may be responsible for the geographic patterns described in this study.  相似文献

Stomatal function mediates physiological trade‐offs associated with maintaining a favourable H2O balance in leaf tissues while acquiring CO2 as a photosynthetic substrate. The C3 and C4 species appear to have different patterns of stomatal response to changing light conditions, and variation in this behaviour may have played a role in the functional diversification of the different photosynthetic pathways. In the current study, we used gain analysis theory to characterize the stomatal conductance response to light intensity in nine different C3, C4 and C3‐C4 intermediate species Flaveria species. The response of stomatal conductance (gs) to a change in light intensity represents both a direct (related to a change in incident light intensity, I) and indirect (related to a change in intercellular CO2 concentration, Ci) response. The slope of the line relating the change in gs to Ci was steeper in C4 species, compared with C3 species, with C3‐C4 species having an intermediate response. This response reflects the greater relative contribution of the indirect versus direct component of the gs versus I response in the C4 species. The C3‐C4 species, Flaveria floridana, exhibited a C4‐like response whereas the C3‐C4 species, Flaveria sonorensis and Flaveria chloraefolia, exhibited C3‐like responses, similar to their hypothesized position along the evolutionary trajectory of the development of C4 photosynthesis. There was a positive correlation between the relative contribution of the indirect component of the gs versus I response and water use efficiency when evaluated across all species. Assuming that the C3‐C4 intermediate species reflect an evolutionary progression from fully expressed C3 ancestors, the results of the current study demonstrate an increase in the contribution of the indirect component of the gs versus I response as taxa evolve toward the C4 extreme. The greater relative contribution of the indirect component of the stomatal response occurs through both increases in the indirect stomatal components and through decreases in the direct. Increases in the magnitude of the indirect component may be related to the maintenance of higher water use efficiencies in the intermediate evolutionary stages, before the appearance of fully integrated C4 photosynthesis.  相似文献

An investigation to determine whether stomatal acclimation to [CO2] occurred in C3/C4 grassland plants grown across a range of [CO2] (200–550 µmol mol?1) in the field was carried out. Acclimation was assessed by measuring the response of stomatal conductance (gs) to a range of intercellular CO2 (a gsCi curve) at each growth [CO2] in the third and fourth growing seasons of the treatment. The gsCi response curves for Solanum dimidiatum (C3 perennial forb) differed significantly across [CO2] treatments, suggesting that stomatal acclimation had occurred. Evidence of non–linear stomatal acclimation to [CO2] in this species was also found as maximum gs (gsmax; gs measured at the lowest Ci) increased with decreasing growth [CO2] only below 400 µmol mol?1. The substantial increase in gs at subambient [CO2] for S. dimidiatum was weakly correlated with the maximum velocity of carboxylation (Vcmax; r2 = 0·27) and was not associated with CO2 saturated photosynthesis (Amax). The response of gs to Ci did not vary with growth [CO2] in Bromus japonicus (C3 annual grass) or Bothriochloa ischaemum (C4 perennial grass), suggesting that stomatal acclimation had not occurred in these species. Stomatal density, which increased with rising [CO2] in both C3 species, was not correlated with gs. Larger stomatal size at subambient [CO2], however, may be associated with stomatal acclimation in S. dimidiatum. Incorporating stomatal acclimation into modelling studies could improve the ability to predict changes in ecosystem water fluxes and water availability with rising CO2 and to understand their magnitudes relative to the past.  相似文献

Atmospheric CO2 (Ca) has risen dramatically since preglacial times and is projected to double in the next century. As part of a 4‐year study, we examined leaf gas exchange and photosynthetic acclimation in C3 and C4 plants using unique chambers that maintained a continuous Ca gradient from 200 to 550 µmol mol?1 in a natural grassland. Our goals were to characterize linear, nonlinear and threshold responses to increasing Ca from past to future Ca levels. Photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water‐use efficiency (A/gs) and leaf N content were measured in three common species: Bothriochloa ischaemum, a C4 perennial grass, Bromus japonicus, a C3 annual grass, and Solanum dimidiatum, a C3 perennial forb. Assimilation responses to internal CO2 concentrations (A/Ci curves) and photosynthetically active radiation (A/PAR curves) were also assessed, and acclimation parameters estimated from these data. Photosynthesis increased linearly with Ca in all species (P < 0.05). S. dimidiatum and B. ischaemum had greater carboxylation rates for Rubisco and PEP carboxylase, respectively, at subambient than superambient Ca (P < 0.05). To our knowledge, this is the first published evidence of A up‐regulation at subambient Ca in the field. No species showed down‐regulation at superambient Ca. Stomatal conductance generally showed curvilinear decreases with Ca in the perennial species (P < 0.05), with steeper declines over subambient Ca than superambient, suggesting that plant water relations have already changed significantly with past Ca increases. Resource‐use efficiency (A/gs and A/leaf N) in all species increased linearly with Ca. As both C3 and C4 plants had significant responses in A, gs, A/gs and A/leaf N to Ca enrichment, future Ca increases in this grassland may not favour C3 species as much as originally thought. Non‐linear responses and acclimation to low Ca should be incorporated into mechanistic models to better predict the effects of past and present rising Ca on grassland ecosystems.  相似文献
