Garrow Lake (75° 23 N; 96° 50 W), located 3 km from the southern tip of Little Cornwallis Island and 6.7 m above mean sea level, is a meromictic ecto-creno-cryogenic lake with an area of 418 ha and a maximum water depth of 49 m. The thermal stratification of this lake is mesothermic (heliothermic). Some of the solar energy that penetrates through the 2 m ice cover is stored for a long period of time in the upper level of the monimolimnion, under a greenhouse effect due the water density gradient. The energy transfer (0.06 °C m –1) by conduction toward the bottom sediments is very constant from one year to the next and is likely to prevent the presence of permafrost under this water body.In its chemical composition, this meromictic lake is quite comparable to the world's saltiest water bodies and is the first lake, with a salinity greater than sea water to be reported for the Canadian Arctic. Its anoxic monimolimnion is nearly three times (90) as salty as normal sea water.This hypersaline water seems to have been derived from isostatic trapped marine waters within the present lacustrine basin as well as from underground during deglaciation of the area. The subsequent freezing-out of salt from the underground waters and the migration and accumulation of these waters in the bottom of Garrow Lake through a talik within the permafrost were the main contributing factors. The speed of formation and migration of the underground brine was a function of the postglacial isostatic uplift rate as well as the permafrost growth rate.  相似文献

Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) in Toolik Lake are tightly coupled to the benthos, since they have no pelagic forage fishes. Slimy sculpins (Cottus cognatus) are a prey of lake trout and the soft sediment chironomids are an important prey for the sculpin. Our previous work showed that the median size of lake trout in Toolik Lake had decreased significantly between 1977 and 1986, and smaller lake trout are likely to be less effective as sculpin predators. Using our historic data on the slimy sculpin population from 1978, we took advantage of the recent change in the predator community to examine for subsequent changes in the sculpin community. Between 1978 and 1987, the percentage of slimy sculpin caught in the soft sediments has increased (25% to 39.5%). In 1987 there was a significant difference in the mean weight of sculpin caught on different substrates. The mean individual weight of sculpins increased from the nearshore rock area to the rock/soft-sediment interface to the soft sediments. There was no difference in mean individual weight with habitat in 1978. The mean total length at age for slimy sculpins during this time has also increased significantly. We suggest that the risk of predation while foraging in the soft sediments has declined. The increased use of the soft sediment area appears to have contributed to their increased growth, likely due to greater food abundance.  相似文献

Synopsis Resource partitioning was studied in two benthic Lake Michigan fishes, the deepwater sculpin,Myoxocephalus thompsoni, and the slimy sculpin,Cottus cognatus, that exhibit nearly disjunct distributions along a hypolimnetic depth gradient. Fish were collected in an area of sympatry over two 24 h periods. These sculpins exhibited food segregation—slimy sculpins ate primarilyPontoporeia affinis, deepwater sculpins ate bothP. affinis andMysis relicta — and their depth segregation was associated with the reported abundance of these prey. Different feeding behaviors may be responsible for this association, since slimy sculpins consumed intermediate size ranges ofPontoporeia and deepwater sculpins consumedPontoporeia in a pattern similar to the ambient size distribution. Neither fish showed a daily activity cycle, and both appear food-limited.  相似文献

  • 2.2. In the elkhorn sculpin, Alcichthys alcicornis, spermatozoa showed high motility in solutions of 300 to 400 mOsm/kg, containing sodium ion, with pH higher than 7.5, which coincided with the nature of ovarian fluid of the fish.

Spermatozoa of sunrise sculpin, Pseudoblennius cottoides, and elegant sculpin, Bero elegans, were motile at osmolalities isotonic to the ovarian fluid but not at osmolalities higher than 500 and 800 mOsm/kg, respectively, indicating that the gametic association in these fish is carried out exclusively in their ovaries.
  • 4.4. Spermatozoa of littledragon sculpin, Blepsias cirrhosus, were motile at osmolalities higher than 300 mOsm/kg, but not in sea water, suggesting an internal gametic association to occur in this species of sculpins.
  • 5.5. The results indicate that spermatozoa of the marine sculpins with the internal gametic association show their motility in environmental conditions appropriate to respective reproductive modes.

Arctic slimy sculpin were sampled by passive trapping in lakes containing the predators lake trout and burbot (LT lakes), and lakes lacking sculpin predators (NoLT lakes). Sculpin food abundance (chironomid biomass) from the rocky littoral zone was compared with that from the deep water sediment zone. Distribution, size, growth, age, condition and relative abundance of sculpin were examined. Spatial distribution of sculpin was different between lake types, with more and larger sculpin found over the sediment zone in NoLT lakes. There were no seasonal patterns evident in this distribution and catch per unit effort was not significantly different between LT and NoLT lakes. Biomass of chironomids, the major food of the sculpin, was higher in the sediments than on the rocks, suggesting that sediments should be the preferred environment in the absence of piscivores. Longevity of sculpins varied between IV and VIII years and was not correlated with lake type. Sculpin size frequency distributions were shifted toward slightly larger fish in NoLT lakes. Sculpin growth curves and condition estimates did not reveal a difference between lake types, but comparison of mean ototlith interannular distances between lake types showed a trend, significant in year 4, toward more growth in no lake trout lakes. These results suggest that the presence of piscivores is an important factor limiting arctic slimy sculpin distribution and may act in concert with food supply to impact sculpin growth.  相似文献

Results of the study of 11 lakes situated in the mountainous part of the Amur River basin are reported. Six fish species, namely, blunt-snouted lenok Brachymystax tumensis, Baikal-Lena grayling Thymallus baicalolenensis, Siberian stone loach Barbatula toni, Lagowski’s minnow Rhynchocypris lagowskii, Czekanowski’s minnow Rh. czekanowskii, and Amur sculpin Cottus szanaga, were found in five lakes. Four species were found in one lake (Lake Pereval’noe, basin of the Amgun’ River), and two species were found in each of the remaining lakes. Lenok and Amur sculpin were the most common species. The fauna of Lake Okonon (basin of the river Zeya) was the most specific and did not have analogs among the lake faunas; Czekanowski’s minnow and Baikal black grayling were found in this lake. The lenok ecotype that formed in the mountain lakes differed from the river lenok in some regards. The potential pathways of formation and protection of mountain lake ichthyocenoses of the Amur basin are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The viscosities of blood from shorthorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus scorpius), longhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus) and winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) were compared using a cone-plate viscometer. Both species of sculpin were almost identical with respect to blood and plasma viscosity at the temperatures (0 and 15°C) and shear rates (2.3–90/s) examined. In contrast, the viscosities of winter flounder blood and plasma were considerably greater than those observed in the sculpins. This difference in blood viscosity between the shorthorn sculpin and the winter flounder persisted over the hematocrit range of 0 to 40% red blood cells. The viscosity of the plasma and the interactions between plasma proteins and red blood cells appeared to be the major reasons for the relatively high viscosity of the flounder blood. Although a proportion of the flounder blood viscosity was attributable to fibrinogen, other plasma proteins also appeared to play a significant role. The relatively low blood viscosity of the sculpin species may confer a circulatory advantage during periods of low water temperatures.  相似文献

Synopsis The biology of the prickly sculpin was investigated in Clear Lake, Lake County, California in order to determine how it has persisted in the face of introductions of numerous exotic species when most other native species have declined in abundance or have become extinct. Sculpins over 15 mm SL inhabited all types of benthic habitats in the lake, while post larval sculpins were pelagic when the postlarvae of exotic species were absent. The feeding ecology of sculpins was distinct from the other fishes in the lake in that they fed largely on amphipods and chironomid midge larvae regardless of the time of year, time of day, or habitat. Sculpins were uncommon in the stomachs of piscivorous fishes, except juvenile largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). It is concluded that prickly sculpins have persisted in Clear Lake in part because they are ecologically distinct from the exotic species and are not preyed upon by them to any great extent, and in part because they have managed to survive other man-related perturbations of this ecosystem.  相似文献

Lake Mogilnoe (Kildin Island, the Barents Sea) is a marine stratified lake, a refuge for landlocked populations of marine organisms. Unlike other known marine lakes from polar areas, which communicate with the sea by water percolation at the surface, Mogilnoe has a subterranean connection with the sea like tropical and subtropical anchialine lakes. Similarly to some other marine lakes, Mogilnoe has traditionally been considered to be biologically isolated from the sea and subject to little change. We review the current status of the physical features, zooplankton and benthos of Mogilnoe and trace changes that have occurred in the lake since the start of observations in 1894. The anaerobic bottom water layer has expanded by 100 %, while the upper freshwater layer has diminished by 40 %. The species diversity of zooplankton and macrobenthos has halved. The occurrence of Atlantic cod likens Mogilnoe to some other Arctic marine lakes while the presence of large flocks of sea anemones, scyphomedusae and suberitid sponges makes it similar to tropical anchialine lakes. Lake Mogilnoe is not entirely biologically isolated; accidental introduction of species from the sea does occur. We argue that the idealised model of an isolated steady-state ecosystem can be applied to a marine lake with caution. A model of fluctuating abiotic environment and partial biological isolation portrays the real situation better.  相似文献

I studied the movements of adult Japanese fluvial sculpin, Cottus pollux, in a Japanese mountain stream. An exceptionally severe flood in late September had negative impacts on refuge abundance, condition and population density of the sculpin. The mean distance moved monthly correlated positively with water discharge, but not with water temperature or with population density. Overall, the mean distance sculpins moved after the flood was significantly greater than before the flood, and sculpins tended to move into riffle-raceways after the flood. Comparisons of refuge-site limitation for adults and water depths between habitats indicated that the flood affected riffle-raceways less than pools. Fish in poorer conditions were likely to move extensively, and the condition of fish captured initially in pools deteriorated more significantly than that of sculpins captured in riffle-raceways. Movement bias into riffle-raceways by the sculpins after the flood suggests they sought suitable habitat with available refuges. The results suggest vulnerability to flood disturbance of the sculpins inhabiting the interstitial spaces of the substrate.  相似文献

Based on the materials of investigations conducted for 20 years (1995?2015), the features of biology of the common fish species of the family Cottidae from the northwestern Bering Sea are studied. These species are found during summer and fall in the waters of the Olyutorsky-Navarin region. The size–age parameters of the fishes collected with different fishing gears, as well as the features of their body length and body weight dynamics, spawning time, and spawning conditions, are described. The largest exemplars of shorthorn sculpin Myoxocephalus verrucosus and staghorn sculpins, armorhead sculpin Gymnocanthus galeatus and G. detrisus, are recorded in the catches of snurrevads, while the fishes caught in trawls are characterized by smaller size. Interannual variability of the size composition of the fish is related to the abundance of certain generations or to the fishery directed to different associations of sculpins. In the coastal waters, comparatively low average body size is usual for the majority of common sculpin species (with the exception of lords, yellow Irish lord H. jordani and Gilbert’s Irish lord H. gilberti) because of the dominance of juveniles.  相似文献

Chironomid communities were analyzed in systems with three types of predator regimes to determine hierarchical effects of predation; ponds without fish present, lakes with slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus) present, and lakes with slimy sculpin present along with burbot (Lota Iota) and lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush). Samples were collected by coring bare sediment habitats in 4 systems of each type near the Toolik Lake field station in northern Alaska. Lakes with burbot and lake trout present in addition to slimy sculpin displayed significantly higher (P<0.05) biomass, density, richness, and diversity. This is likely due to the increased complexity of the predator regime. Ponds without fish had a significantly greater percentage of predacious chironomids present.  相似文献

A total of 293 shorthorn sculpins Myoxocephalus scorpius from Tromsø, northern Norway, were sampled between November 1998 and April 1999 to determine sex, total length, age, growth, maturity and mortality. Females grew to larger sizes ( L =26·9 v. 18·5 cm), matured later (2 v. 1 year of age) at larger size (maturation length=16 v. 14 cm L T), and had lower instantaneous mortality rates (0·93 v. 1·20 year−1) than males. The life history parameters of shorthorn sculpins in northern Norway were more similar to the parameters of short-lived central European populations than to the parameters of the long-lived population of Newfoundland. This study confirms that northern Norwegian shorthorn sculpins exhibit sexual dimorphism as in other shorthorn sculpin populations. The relationships between growth pattern, age at maturity and mortality rates observed in the Tromsø population and in other shorthorn sculpin populations, correspond well with the predictions from a published life history model.  相似文献

Synopsis The coastal fish assemblages of Wemindji, eastern James Bay, were studied in 1987 and 1988 to describe seasonal utilization of the Maquatua River estuary and the adjacent coastal waters by marine and anadromous fishes. Fish diversity was low (11 sp.) and experimental gill net catches were highly variable between sites in the estuary and coastal waters, and also seasonally at a given site. During summer, the estuarine fishes were numerically dominated by two marine species, the fourhorn sculpin,Myoxocephalus quadricornis, and the slender eelblenny,Lumpenus fabricii, and also by juvenile cisco,Coregonus artedii, and juvenile lake whitefish,C. clupeaformis. In coastal waters, three marine species were abundant: the shorthorn sculpin,M. scorpius, the arctic sculpin,M. scorpioides and the Greenland cod.Gadus ogac. In contrast with the estuary, large (> 270 mm) cisco and lake whitefish were abundant in coastal waters indicating extensive movements of these species in James Bay during the summer. Distribution patterns were influenced by a combination of physical conditions (salinity and temperature) and biological characteristics (habitat choice, migration and reproduction) depending on the season.  相似文献

A shallow, saline lake (Rookery Lake) close to the sea and surrounded by a penguin rookery was investigated during the austral spring and summer of 1996/1997. The proximity to the sea means that the lake is likely to have been formed recently during isostatic uplift. Inputs of carbon and nutrients from the penguin rookery have rendered Rookery Lake eutrophic compared with other brackish and saline lakes in the Vestfold Hills. Chlorophyll a concentration, bacterioplankton, heterotrophic nanoflagellate and phototrophic nanoflagellate abundances were all significantly higher than in other non-enriched lakes. The high productivity created seasonal anoxia during winter and spring below ice cover. The ciliate community resembled the marine community, and was dissimilar to that seen in older saline lakes within the Vestfold Hills. Thus Rookery Lake provides valuable evidence of the impact of natural eutrophication on an Antarctic lake, as well as of the evolution of the typical microbial community which dominates the older lakes of the Vestfold Hills. Salinity tolerance in some marine teleost fishes was studied. Based on a comparison of sexually mature specimens in the summer season, the investigated species can be arranged in the order of decreasing capability for hyperosmoregulation into the following series: the Far Eastern dace Trybolodon brandti, the haarder Mugil soiuy > the frog sculpin Myoxocephalus stelleri > the snowy sculpin M. brandti > the plain sculpin M. jaok > the masked greenling Hexagrammos octogrammus > the pipefish Syngnathus acusimilis. The adult Far Eastern dace and the haarder showed high salinity tolerance and fully adapted to fresh water. Sculpins and the masked greenling usually occur only in seas or brackish water, but they were capable of enduring fresh water for a long time. Unlike them, the pipefish, which is also a euryhaline fish and occurs in river estuaries and brackish bays, perished in fresh water within 1 h. Representatives of the genus Myoxocephalus show between-species differences in salinity tolerance, which allows them to colonize extensive near-shore areas of the sea and to occupy specific ecological niches.  相似文献

Time series on juvenile life‐history traits obtained from sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka were analysed to assess lake‐specific environmental influences on juvenile migration timing, size and survival of fish from a common gene pool. Every year for the past two decades, O. nerka have been spawned at a hatchery facility, and the progeny released into two lakes that differ in average summer temperatures, limnological attributes and growth opportunities. Juveniles reared in the warmer, more productive Crosswind Lake were larger and heavier as smolts compared to those from the cooler, less productive Summit Lake and had higher in‐lake and subsequent marine survival. Crosswind Lake smolts migrated from the lake to sea slightly earlier in the season but the migration timing distributions overlapped considerably across years. Fry stocking density had a negative effect on smolt length for both lakes, and a negative effect on in‐lake survival in Summit Lake. Taken together, the results revealed a strong effect of lake‐rearing environment on the expression of life‐history variation in O. nerka. The stocking of these lakes each year with juveniles from a single mixed‐source population provided a large‐scale reverse common‐garden experiment, where the same gene pool was exposed to different environments, rather than the different gene pools in the same environment approach typical of evolutionary ecology studies. Other researchers are encouraged to seek and exploit similar serendipitous situations, which might allow environmental and genetic influences on ecologically important traits to be distinguished in natural or semi‐natural settings.  相似文献

Synopsis Field and laboratory experiments indicate that the mottled sculpin, Cottus bairdi, feed in the dark. Blinded sculpins feed on a variety of motile prey in the laboratory and show stereotyped responses to prey stimuli. The sculpins bite at moving inert objects, even if buried in substratum, indicating that they use their lateral line system to detect prey. Covering portions of the lateral line with an inert paste eliminates response to objects near the covered region of the lateral line. The sculpins can also detect prey (including inert objects) in a stream if the prey is upstream. Collection from two series of presunset, postsunset, presunrise, postsunrise, dives in Lake Michigan indicate nocturnal feeding by the mottled sculpin.  相似文献

The relationships among Myoxocephalus quadricornis complex fish from Arctic coastal waters and from 'glacial relict' populations in Nearctic and Palearctic postglacial lakes were assessed using mtDNA sequence data (1978 bp). A principal phylogeographical split separated the North American continental deepwater sculpin (M. q. thompsonii) from a lineage of the Arctic marine and North European landlocked populations of the fourhorn sculpin (M. q. quadricornis). The North American continental invasion took place several glaciation cycles ago in the Early-to-Middle Pleistocene (0.9% sequence divergence); the divergence of the European and Arctic populations was somewhat later (0.5% divergence). The Nearctic-Palearctic freshwater vicariance in Myoxocephalus, however, appears clearly younger than in similarly distributed 'glacial relict' crustacean taxa; the phylogeographical structure is more similar to that in other northern Holarctic freshwater fish complexes.  相似文献

The food spectra, trophic statuses, and feeding interrelations of three most abundant benthic carnivorous fish species inhabiting the Shelikhov Bay—the Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus, the great sculpin Myoxocephalus polyacanthocephalus, and the Okhotsk sculpin M. ochotensis—are considered based on materials collected during the complex survey of the RV Professor Kaganovsky of the TINRO-Center, in September 2004. It was found that these species were facultative predators with wide food spectra. The significance of prey objects in the diet of the Okhotsk sculpin was as follows: crustaceans, fish, and mollusks. Great sculpin and Pacific cod preyed mostly on fish, then on crustaceans, and mollusks. Pacific cod ate equal proportions of fish and decapods. All the species had age-related variability of diet. The potential competition of great sculpin and Okhotsk sculpin for food was mitigated by the difference in the depths of their ranges, as well as by morphological (body size) and behavioral peculiarities in the areas where their habitats overlapped, and in microecosystems. The most probable competition was among Pacific cod 30–60 cm long and Okhotsk sculpin 20–50 cm in length, as well as among cod and great sculpins of all sizes.  相似文献
