Primary sex ratio of arrhenotokous tetranychid mites depends on the age-specific schedule of ratios of progeny produced by individual females. Since primary sex ratio is conditional upon female age and since the proportion of females of a given age in a population is influenced by the rate of increase, both the agespecific ratio of males to females and the overall ratio of males to females depends on the rate of increase. We given an expression for this dependence and compare it to experimental results for the two-spotted spiter mite. These results imply that there is no standard sex ratio of spider mites because of interpopulation variation in rates of increase.
Résumé Le taux sexuel des acariens tétranychidés arrhénotoques est défini comme le rapport de la somme des nombres de mâles sur la somme des nombres de femelles pour chaque âge de la distribution en âges. Comme le taux sexuel primaire dépend de l'âge de la femelle et comme la proportion de femelles d'un âge donné dans la population est influencée par le taux d'accroissement, alors le rapport mâle/femelle spécifique d'un âge déterminé et le rapport global mâle/femelle dépendent du taux d'accroissement. Nous avons cherché à exprimer cette dépendance et à la comparer aux résultats expérimentaux pour Tetranychus urticae. Ces résultats signifient qu'il n'y a pas de taux sexuel caractéristique de Tétranyques par suite des variations du taux d'accroissement suivant les populations.

Control of sex ratio in the progenies of mated female spider mites was investigated in two laboratory experiments. In Experiment I, a single strain of Tetranychus urticae Koch was reared in four different environments. In Experiment II, 4 different geographic strains of T. urticae were reared in a single environment.Results indicated that spider mite females were able to control the sex ratio of their progeny at two levels: an initial control of mean population ratio according to ovipositional environment. In addition, a secondary control resulted in an approximately uniform daily ratio. Although each parental female produced a varying number of eggs from day to day, a more or less constant fraction of those eggs were fertilized every day. It is concluded that both of these characteristics are probably important to the colonizing ability of the species.
Résumé L'étude de la régulation du sexe de la descendance de femelles inséminées d'acariens est basée sur deux expériences de laboratoire. Dans l'expérience I, une lignée de Tetranychus urticae a été élevée dans deux conditions différentes de qualité des feuilles pendant le développement des parents, d'une part, pendant leur ponte et le développement de la descendance d'autre part. Dans l'expérience II, quatre souches géographiques différentes de T. urticae ont été élevées dans les mêmes conditions.Il est apparu nettement que les femelles dans des conditions différentes ont donné des descendances avec des taux sexuels variant dans certaines limites. Ces différences étaient statistiquement significatives dans les duex lots de données expérimentales. Les taux sexuels des populations d'acariens variaient aussi avec les conditions écologiques. Dans les bonnes conditions, la proportion de femelles dans la descendance était la plus élevée. Les taux sexuels des populations variaient aussi entre les quatre souches géographiques.Les analyses ont aussi révélé que les femelles d'acariens sont capables de contrôler le taux sexuel à deux niveaux: une régulation initiale du taux de la population en fonction des conditions écologiques ou de la lignée géographique et un contrôle secondaire qui s'est traduit par un taux quotidien approximativement uniforme.En utilisant un argument mathématique simple incorporant la fécondité caractéristique des acariens, nous avons conclu que ces deux caractéristiques de la rulation sont probablement d'une importance capitale pour le pouvoir colonisateur de cette espèce.

Residual deposits of fluvalinate caused two-spotted spider mite,Tetranychus urticae Koch, dispersal by running off (run-off) and spinning down (spin-down) from treated leaves. Run-off occured at concentrations from 0.0005 g a.i. 1−1 and reached a peak at 0.01 g a.i. 1−1. Spin-down was more predominant at concentrations above 0.01 g a.i. 1−1. Spin-down and run-off proportions varied with fluvalinate formulation. Oviposition was temporarily suppressed on fluvalinate-treated leaves, presumably because of an irritant effect which reduced feeding. An emulsifiable concentrate formulation caused the largest reductions in oviposition. Oviposition returned to the level exhibited by untreated mites two days after removal from treated surfaces. Oviposition and feeding were positively correlated and both declined reciprocally with increasing fluvalinate concentration.  相似文献

Mite age, population density, and host leaf quality affect various life history traits in spider mites. We investigated the effects of these factors on the aerial dispersal behavior of adult female twospotted spider mites,Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae). The proportion of adult females exhibiting the dispersal behavior dropped significantly with age following adult emergence, particularly in the first 3 days. Sixty to eighty percent of female mites 2-days old or younger displayed the behavior under test conditions, whereas less than 20% of female mites older than 3-days-old showed the behavior. Younger adult females also exhibited shorter latency for the behavior, although this trend was not as clear. Leaf quality experienced during deutonymph development had no effect on the behavior adults subsequently displayed. On the other hand, adult females that fed on poor quality leaves after emergence were twice as likely to display the behavior (90% vs. 45%), and with shorter latency (37 vs. 77 min), than those that fed on high quality leaves. When newly emerged adult females encountered high mite density and dry leaves, the incidence of the behavior increased (69% vs. 47%) and latency decreased (69 vs. 93 min) compared to mites that encountered low density on well watered leaves. Our results suggest that both starvation and desiccation of adult females may enhance their dispersal behavior.  相似文献

Bifenthrin (Talstar®) was registered at the beginning of the 1993/94 season for control of Helicoverpa spp. and Tetranychus urticae in Australian cotton. Resistance was monitored in T. urticae following registration but despite the implementation of resistance management, resistance evolved in the 1996/97 cotton-growing season after only four seasons use. During the following three seasons resistance increased progressively both in level (from 1.2- to 109-fold at LC50) and abundance (from 20 to 90% strains) and was linked to field control failures. The evolution of resistance has now reduced the reliability of bifenthrin for T. urticae control in Australian cotton. The impact of bifenthrin resistance in T. urticae and its continued management in Australian cotton is discussed.  相似文献

Geographic variations and combining abilities of three fitness traits: the mean number of offspring, and the mean number and proportion of female offspring, in the two-spotted spider mite were investigated using four widely separated strains of Tetranychus urticae Koch. Analyses of data obtained from a complete set of diallel crosses, involving the four strains, revealed large and highly significant specific combining abilities and reciprocal effects in all the fitness characteristics examined. It was concluded that the whole chain of reproductive events, from egg production of parental females to the fertility of hybrid daughters could be severely affected by incompatibility between parental populations.
Résumé L'étude a porté sur les différences géographiques et les combinaisons de trois caractères adaptatifs—nombre moyen de descendants, nombre moyen et proportion de femelles dans la descendance—sur quatre souches différentes de Tetranychus urticae. L'analyse des données obtenues à partir d'un lot complet de croisements dialléliques, sur les quatre souches, révèle pour tous les caractères adaptatifs examinés une forte aptitude à l'association et aux effets réciproques. On peut en conclure que la chaîne totale des événements intervenant dans la reproduction—de la production d'oeufs par les mères jusqu'à la fécondité des filles hybrides—pourrait être fortement modifiée par l'incompatibilité entre populations parentales.

Four fluvalinate formulations differed in their residual toxicity to female two-spotted spider mite (TSM), Tetranychus urticae adults; the emulsifiable concentrate (EC) was the most toxic. In contrast, there was little difference in toxicity between the formulations with the European red mite (ERM) Panonychus ulmi with the exception of the EC formulation which was the least toxic. Fluvalinate 2F caused minimal (<10%) TSM and ERM egg mortality. Fluvalinate 2F was more toxic and caused greater larval dispersal for the TSM compared to the ERM at the field concentration and below. The toxicity of fluvalinate 2F to TSM and ERM protonymphs, deutonymphs and adults was low, approximately <20% at field concentration. Dispersal was the main response to fluvalinate and this was positively correlated with increasing concentration. The combined mortality and dispersal LC50 was five times lower for ERM protonymphs and adults, but 11 times higher for ERM deutonymphs compared to equivalent TSM life stages. Fluvalinate 2F reduced TSM development from the protonymph and deutonymph stages to a greater extent compared to the ERM. The mortality response to fluvalinate 2F was unaffected by host type (peach or apple) for the TSM whereas ERM mortality was higher on apple compared to peach. TSM dispersal was higher from apple compared to peach whereas ERM dispersal was similar on both host types. Oviposition by both mite species was lower on apple than peach leaves. A 1 h exposure to fluvalinate 2F reduced ERM oviposition for 12 days.  相似文献

This paper determines reproductive limits and variation in performance of male twospotted spider mites Tetranychus urticae Koch when virgin females are provided ad libitum over the first eight days of adult life. Theree phases of male reproduction were studied: copulations, insemination and reproduction. An average one day old male copulated 15 times, inseminated 15 females, and contributed to 336 daughters. All parameters declined with age. The average male inseminated 70 females and contributed to 1145 daughters in the first days. Variability between males was small for all parameters considered. These data suggest that the number of sperm transferred at each insemination, rather than the number of inseminations, is the limiting step to higher male reproductive output.
Résumé La reproduction est un processus qui nécessite généralement un mâle et une femelle. Cependant la biologie des populations ne s'est traditionnellement intéressée qu'à la contribution des femelles dans ce processus. Un effet de cet accent sur les femelles est que l'activité reproductrice des mâles a été très ignorée. Cet article examine, dans un contexte démographique, l'activité reproductrice des mâles de T. urticae, acarien arrhénotoque et phytophage. Trois séquences de l'activité reproductrice des mâles ont été examinées: 1) la copulation, 2) l'insémination, 3) la reproduction.En moyenne un mâle de 1 jour a copulé 15 fois, inséminé 15 femelles et a eu 336 filles. Pendant les 8 premiers jours, le mâle moyen a inséminé 70 femelles et a eu 1145 filles. Ces résultats suggèrent que le nombre de spermatozoïdes transférés à chaque insémination, plus que le nombre d'inséminations, est le facteur limitant d'une forte contribution du mâle à la reproduction.

Mitochondrial (mt) DNA of the phytophagous miteTetranychus urticae was purified and a restriction map was constructed. The 12.5 kb long genome is the shortest animal mtDNA known. A 564 bp clone comprising part of the gene for cytochrome oxidase subunit I was sequenced. Behavioral analysis of near-isogenic dicofol-resistant and dicofol-susceptible spider mites did not uncover behavior patterns, present in resistant individuals yet absent in susceptible individuals, that would have reduced exposure to dicofol. On the contrary, homozygous resistant individuals were more likely than homozygous susceptible individuals to remain in contact with treated leaf areas. In the case of dicofol resistance in twospotted spider mites, resistance appears to have resulted in the loss, rather than the acquisition, of behavioral traits that lessen exposure to pesticide. Therefore, we conclude that behavioral resistance does not play a major role in twospotted spider mite resistance to dicofol.Deux génotypes de T. urticae Koch (un sensible et un résistant) ont servi à étudier les aspects comportementaux de la résistance aux pesticides: la durée et la fréquence des comportements de nutrition, de marche et d'attente ont été mesurés chez cet acarien. 1)  Comment l'âge du résidu affecte le comportement? 24 ou 48 heures après avoir enduit uniformément les feuilles de résidus de dicofol par trempage dans une solution à 100 ppm, un acarien était placé sur un disque de feuille et observé pendant une heure; les disques témoins sans résidu avaient été trempés dans l'eau;
2)  Comment se comportent les acariens sur des disques de feuilles de 35 mm de diamètre recouverts d'une couche discontinue (formée par des carrés de 0,7 cm de côté disposés en damier) de résidu? Les carrés traités ont reçu 2 ml d'une solution à 100 ppm de dicofol sous pression exercée par un vaporisateur Potter. Chaque acarien a été observé pendant une heure;
3)  Quel est l'effet à long terme des résidus? La position des acariens a été examinée 48 heures après qu'ils aient été placés sur des feuilles avec résidus discontinus de 24 heures.

The relative toxicity of someacaricides to the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis and the twospottedspider mite, Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Phytoseiidae, Tetranychidae) wasevaluated in laboratory. Five of theacaricides tested, including bifenazate,acequinocyl, chlorfenapyr, flufenoxuron andfenbutatin oxide, were much less toxic to adultfemales and immatures of P. persimilisthan to those of T. urticae, and adultfemale predators treated with these fiveacaricides produced 84±96% as many eggs as didcontrol females. Etoxazole did not seriouslyaffect the survival and reproduction of adultfemale predators but caused high mortalityrates in eggs and larvae of P.persimilis. Milbemectin and fenazaquin werevery toxic to adult females and immatures ofP. persimilis. Adult female predatorssurvived on a diet of spider mites treated withbifenazate, acequinocyl, chlorfenapyr,flufenoxuron and fenbutatin oxide, and theirfecundity, prey consumption and the sex ratioof the progeny were not substantially affected. Based on the results, bifenazate, acequinocyl,chlorfenapyr, flufenoxuron and fenbutatin oxideappeared to be the promising candidates for usein integrated mite management programs whereP. persimilis is the major naturalenemy.  相似文献

The present study investigated prey-mediated effects of two maize varieties expressing a truncated Cry1Ab, Compa CB (event Bt176) and DKC7565 (event MON810), on the biology of the ladybird Stethorus punctillum. Although immuno-assays demonstrated the presence of Cry1Ab in both prey and predator collected from commercial maize-growing fields, neither transgenic variety had any negative effects on survival of the predator, nor on the developmental time through to adulthood. Furthermore, no subsequent effects on ladybird fecundity were observed. As a prerequisite to studying the interaction of ladybird proteases with Cry1Ab, proteases were characterised using a range of natural and synthetic substrates with diagnostic inhibitors. These results demonstrated that this predator utilises both serine and cysteine proteases for digestion. In vitro studies demonstrated that T. urticae were not able to process or hydrolyze Cry1Ab, suggesting that the toxin passes through the prey to the third trophic level undegraded, thus presumably retaining its insecticidal properties. In contrast, S. punctillum was able to activate the 130 kDa protoxin into the 65 kDa fragment; a fragment of similar size was also obtained with bovine trypsin, which is known to cleave the protoxin to the active form. Thus, despite a potential hazard to the ladybird of Bt-expressing maize (since the predator was both exposed to, and able to proteolytically cleave the toxin, at least in vitro), no deleterious effects were observed.  相似文献

Predation by naturally occurring predatory arthropods was investigated to explain variations in population numbers of twospotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) between first and second season strawberry crops. Araneomorph spiders. European harvestman [Phalangium opilio (L.)], Tasmanian lacewing [Micromus tasmaniae (Walker)] and Pacific damsel bug [Nabis kinbergii Reuter] were the only predators found in high numbers. However, spiders and harvestment were more prevalent than lacewings and nabids. Laboratory feedings trials indicated spiders build horizontal webs in the plants and prey predominantly on small flying insects that shelter in the crops. Similar feeding trials cofirmed the palatability of TSSM to spiders and harvestmen. Immunological testing for proteins of TSSM, aphids, Collembola and leafrollers in the intestines of field collected European harvestman, spiders, Tasmanian lacewing and Pacific damsel bug confirmed European harvestman includes TSSM in its diet, but not in large enough quantities to exert a significant regulating pressure on TSSM populations. Lacewings and nabids include TSSM in their diets but only in very small quantities (2% and 1% respectively). Spiders do not take TSSM unless they drop or spin down onto the spider webbing. The immunological testing also showed European harvestman to be a polyphagous and opportunistic feeder. Prey residues were detected more frequently in harvestmen intestines at times of prey abundance which indicated a seasonality to harvestmen diet.   相似文献

Benomyl affected populations of Tetranychus urticae by interfering with the pathogenic fungus, Neozygites floridana. Benomyl delayed but prolonged spider mite outbreaks. Few mites were infected with the pathogen when benomyl was used. Reductions in mite populations treated with fentin hydroxide were associated with a high incidence of N. floridana infection. Benomyl did not affect sporulation of N. floridana but appeared to inhibit conidial germination or growth of the fungus.

Le bénomyl retardait mais prolongeait les pullulations de l'acarien. Peu d'acariens étaient infectés par le champignon quand on utilisait du bénomyl. Les réductions des populations d'acariens traitées avec l'hydroxyde de fentine étaient associées à un haut niveau d'infection par N. floridana. Le bénomyl ne modifiait pas la sporulation de N. floridana mais semblait inhiber la germination des conidies ou la croissance du champignon.

A 3 year study of spider mites in a corn-peanut agroecosystem indicated that the persistance and pest status of mite populations depended on dispersal among a succession of temporarily suitable cultivated and non-cultivated hosts. In the spring, mites crawled from overwintering sites in vegetation along field margins into both peanut and corn fields, but became established only in corn. Initiation of aerial dispersal from corn was coincident with and appeared dependent upon mites moving to the top of the corn canopy, where they were exposed to the wind. Mites were first observed in peanut immediately following the onset of aerial dispersal from corn, and these aerial dispersers were the primary source of subsequent mite infestations in peanut. As populations grew in peanut, mites dispersed into vegetation along peanut field margins and became the nucleus of populations which persisted over the winter. This pattern of host utilization was reinitiated in the spring if corn was planted adjacent to infested field borders. This pattern commonly occurs since corn is planted following peanut in the predominant crop rotation sequence in this area.
Résumé Des populations d'acariens ont été étudiées pendant 3 ans sur maïs, arachide et végétation spontanée, dans 7 fermes commerciales de Chowan Co., Caroline du Nord. Les déplacements d'acariens parmi ces plantes ont été notés en fonction de la croissance de la population et de la phénologie des hôtes. Un schéma cohérent de croissance de la population d'acariens et de leurs mouvements en découle, dont seule la taille change suivant les fermes et les années. Les acariens provenant de populations hivernantes sur la végétation spontanée bordant les champs migrèrent dans les champs cultivés adjacents quelle qu'en soit la nature de la culture. Cependant, à cette époque, les populations d'acariens ne s'établissaient que dans le maïs. Dans le maïs, les acariens se répandirent à travers le champ et se multiplièrent sur des pieds particuliers jusqu'à ce qu'ils eussent atteint le sommet de la canopée du maïs. Les premiers acariens transportés par le vent ont été capturés la semaine suivant la première apparition d'acariens au sommet de la canopée du maïs et aussitôt après la découverte des premiers acariens dans les arachides voisines. Ceci suggère que les acariens dispersés par le vent sont à l'origine des contaminations ultérieures des arachides voisines. Plus tard dans la saison, les acariens se dispersèrent à partir de l'arachide vers les sites d'hibernation dans la végétation spontanée poussant autour du champ d'arachide. Puisque des champs semés en arachides sont généralement semés en maïs l'année suivante, les acariens se dispersant au printemps depuis les sites d'hibernation rencontrèrent souvent du maïs qu'ils colonisèrent. Ce cycle répétitif d'utilisation de l'hôte et de dispersion est considéré comme fortement responsable de la pérennité des acariens et de leur danger potentiel dans les agroécosystèmes à maïs-arachide, caractéristiques du canton de Chowan (N.C.).Les problèmes potentiels posés par les acariens sur arachide ont paru être liés à l'intensité de l'attaque d'acariens sur le maïs voisin, qui sert de réservoir pour les populations d'acariens. Ceci suggère que le contrôle des populations d'acariens sur maïs peut être une stratégie viable pour limiter les infestations ultérieures sur arachide et, en dernier lieu, les populations hivernantes.

The responses of Tetranychus urticae Koch from Australian cotton to chlorfenapyr has been monitored since the 1997–1998 growing season. Resistance was first detected in the 2001–2002 season and then increased quickly in both level and proportion of resistant strains detected. In response, the resistance management strategy for chlorfenapyr use in cotton was altered and now recommends a further restriction of use from two to one spray per season. There was no evidence of negative cross-resistance to the pyrethroid bifenthrin, but chlorfenapyr was associated with an undefined negative cross-resistance.  相似文献

Whenever diapause induction triggers movement into another microhabitat or the development of protective morphological structures, this may also alter predation risk. If the risk of being eaten is lower in the diapause phase, then there may be selection favouring diapause induction in response to predators or their cues. In this article, we studied the effect of the predatory mite Typhlodromus pyri on diapause induction in the spider mite Tetranychus urticae. We used a Greek strain because under long-night photoperiods and low temperature only part of the population enters diapause, thereby leaving room for the impact of another factor. In spider mite groups under predation, the percentage diapause induction increased whenever night-lengths were such that diapause was induced (13–16 h of night). Given this diapause induction in response to predation risk, the question arises whether entering diapause helps spider mites to escape from predation and contribute more offspring to the spring generation next year.  相似文献

Laboratory bioassays were conducted to evaluate the effects of spirodiclofen on life history and life-table parameters of two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) females treated at pre-ovipositional period with a series of acaricide concentrations starting with the concentration discriminative for eggs and immatures i.e. the lowest concentration that causes 100% mortality of those stages. After a 24 h exposure, the proportion of females that survived treatments was 0.71 (6 mg/l), 0.51 (12 mg/l), 0.41 (24 mg/l), 0.30 (48 mg/l) and 0.25 (96 mg/l). At the end of the trial, the survival rate of females treated with the lowest concentration was significantly lower than the survival rate of untreated females but it remained above that of females treated with higher concentrations. Total fecundity/fertility significantly decreased as concentrations of spirodiclofen increased. Viable eggs were laid by females treated with 6, 12 and 24 mg/l, and total fertility was reduced by 42, 84 and 97%, respectively. Compared with control, the gross fecundity/fertility of the treated females was significantly reduced throughout the trial, except in females treated with 6 mg/l. All concentrations caused a significant reduction in the net fecundity/fertility throughout the trial. The females treated with 12 mg/l had significantly reduced net reproductive rate (R 0 = 6.45), compared to females treated with 6 mg/l (R 0 = 23.35) and to untreated females (R 0 = 28.92); there was no significant difference between the last two treatments. The intrinsic rate of increase (r m ) and finite rate of increase (λ) were significantly reduced in treated females (r m = 0.141, λ = 1.156 and r m = 0.214, λ = 1.232; 12 and 6 mg/l, respectively), compared to control (r m = 0.251, λ = 1.276). The reduction was significantly greater in females treated with the highest concentration. As a result of the lowered r m , the doubling time in treated females was significantly extended. Sublethal effects of spirodiclofen and its impact on T. urticae management are discussed.  相似文献

Effects of host-plant quality on two-spotted spider mite,Tetranychus urticae Koch, mate location and guarding behaviors were described using a no-choice bioassay. Males and quiescent deutonymphs were collected from lima bean leaves of one of two host qualities. High-chlorophyll (HC) leaves had been infested with spider mites for 6–10 days, while low-chlorophyll (LC) leaves had been infested for>21 days. Three parameters of maleT. urticae guarding behavior were quantified: approach arrestment, and arrestment duration. HC males approached quiescent deutonymphs more often than did LC males, even though host quality of females had no effect on male approach frequency. HC males were arrested more frequently by HC quiescent deutonymphs than were LC males, while LC males were arrested more often by LC females than were HC males. However, a different pattern was observed for arrestment duration. HC males were arrested for twice as long by LC quiescent deutonymphs than by HC females, while the LC-male arrestment durations elicited by HC and LC females did not differ. These results show that host-plant quality affectsT. urticae intersexual communication, in terms of both the female signal and the male response.
