D. laetatorius is one of the most important natural enemies of aphidophagous syrphid flies, in terms of abundance, in crops and pastures in Argentina. In order to increase the database on this parasitoid, its prey selection behaviour was studied. Laboratory experiments were made to investigate its preference of host species and instars within species. This parasitoid showed a fastidious behaviour, choosing more often than predicted by chance, first instars ofAllograpta exotica (Wied.).  相似文献

Organic lettuce, Lactuca sativa L., producers on California's Central Coast rely on endemic syrphid flies (Diptera: Syrphidae) to suppress populations of Nasonovia ribisnigri Mosley (Homoptera: Aphididae) and other aphids affecting lettuce. Growers are using various forms of habitat manipulation to enhance biological control. We surveyed syrphids collected from organic romaine in and around the Salinas Valley from March through September 2005 to gain a better understanding of the species responsible for aphid suppression and to examine possible implications for biocontrol. The primary species of syrphid fly reared were Toxomerus marginatus (Say) (39%), Platycheirus stegnus (Say) (27%), Sphaerophoria sulfuripes (Thomson) (13%), and Allograpta obliqua (Say) (10%). Syrphus opinator Osten Sacken (2%), Toxomerus occidentalis (Curran) (1.3%), and Eupeodes volucris Osten Sacken (1%) were less common. Sphaerophoria pyrrhina Bigot, Scaeva pyrastri (L.), Platycheirus obscurus Say, Allograpta exotica Wiedemann, and Eupeodes americanus Wiedemann each made up <1% of the syrphids reared. T. marginatus and Sphaerophoria sulfuripes were commonly collected from romaine plants with few or no detectable aphids. P. stegnus was observed to deposit in clusters of eggs, and was only reared in significant numbers from highly infested fields. Approximately 5% of syrphid larvae overall were parasitized by either Diplazon sp. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) or Pachyneuron sp. (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae).  相似文献

Résumé La faune des Thécamoebiens fut étudiée dans deux étangs (La Brava et De los Padres) situe dans la Province de Buenos Aires (Argentina). Le nombre d'espèces trouvé en tout a été de 14, quelques-unes desquelles représentées par de différentes formae. Une nouvelle forma Centropyxis compressa (Cushman), forma brava n.f. a été trouvée et décrite, et une espèce de Pontigulasia a été proposée en nomenclatura aperta.
Summary The Thecamoebiens of two lakes (La Brava and de los Padres) located in the Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina) were studied. The total number of species found is 14, several of them are represented by various formae. A new forma was found and described, namely Centropyxis compressa (Cushman), forma brava n.f. and one species of Pontigulasia was put in nomenclatura aperta.

A survey for entomopathogenic fungi of Musca domestica adults was conducted in poultry houses in La Plata, Buenos Aires province, Argentina, during the years 2002 and 2003. Adult house flies were found infected with the fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. (Deuteromycotina: Hyphomycetes) from field collections, with a natural infected prevalence between 0.4–1.45%. This is the first record of natural infections of house flies caused by B. bassiana for the neotropics. Pathogenicity assays under laboratory conditions showed 94% adult mortality at 14 days post challenge. CIC fellow  相似文献

The Oligochaeta of some streams flowing into the Rio de La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina, were investigated. Twenty nine taxa (twenty four naidids, five tubificids) were identified. Most species are cosmopolitan, but Dero evelinae, Pristina leidyi, Slavina isochaeta and Bothrioneurum sp. are neotropical. Bratislavia unidentata, Haemonais waldvogeli and Nais pardalis are reported for the first time in Argentina. Variants occurr in the shape of the distal end of the penial sheaths of Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri. The dominant Naidid genera are Dero and Pristina. In the polluted El Gato stream only L. hoffmeisteri and L. claparedeianus were found.  相似文献

Oviposition by aphidophagous Syrphidae varies with the size of aphid infestations and different syrphid species have different optimum aphid population sizes for oviposition. In one experiment using potted brussels sprout plants infested with Brevicoryne brassicae L., Platycheirus manicatus (Meig.) preferred about 100 aphids per plant, P. scutatus (Meig.) about 1000 aphids per plant and Syrphus ribesii (L.) about 2000 aphids per plant. These preferences were less clear in certain Platycheirus species (e.g. P. peltatus (Meig.)), than in Syrphus species (e.g. S. luniger Meig.). Once a plant has been selected for oviposition there may still be selection of suitable colonies on that plant. For a given aphid population, S. luniger preferred a small number of large aggregates to a larger number of smaller ones, whereas S. balteatus (Deg.) preferred the opposite. The tendency of the different species to select aphid populations of different sizes and distributions is likely to decrease interspecific competition.  相似文献

Tayassu pecari is widely distributed across the Neotropical region, from northern Argentina to south-eastern Mexico. However, its fossil record is scarce; it is recorded since the middle Pleistocene to Holocene in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. This paper aims to: (1) update the systematic synonymy of this species; (2) review and update its geographic chronologic distribution and provide a new Lujanian record of Tayassu pecari in Buenos Aires Province and (3) discuss the paleoenvironmental and paleobiogeographical implications of this record. Considering the quantitative analysis performed, the fossil here recorded clearly integrates the group of Tayassu pecari. This specimen corresponds to the first record of Tayassu pecari in the central-northern region of the Buenos Aires Province. During Late Pleistocene, Tayassu pecari was distributed southern to its recent range, probably evidencing different paleoenvironment conditions. This species is the better adapted peccary to tropical and subtropical rainforests, but may also be present in arid environments. Consequently, Tayassu by itself is insufficient to infer the prevailing environmental conditions. However, according to the fauna associated with the specimen described here, it is possible to infer an open or semi-open and arid or semi-arid environment for the central-northern Buenos Aires region by Late Pleistocene times.  相似文献

1. Aphid‐tending ants that feed on honeydew have evolved strategies against aphidophagous insects and tune their aggressive behaviour according to the level of danger for their trophobionts. Here we investigate how Lasius niger Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) ants react to different instars of Episyrphus balteatus De Geer (Diptera: Syrphidae) hoverflies which vary in their voracity and defensive abilities. 2. During pairwise encounters, early syrphid instars (eggs, L1, and L2 larvae) elicited lower aggression scores compared to third larval instars (L3), which was intensively bitten by ants. L3 tried to escape from ants by releasing a sticky and toxic secretion over biting ants that died or underwent severe morbidity. 3. In a standardised system including the host plant, aphid, tending ant, and hoverfly, the ability of ants to protect an Aphis fabae Scopoli (Hemiptera: Aphididae) colony was evaluated. Early E. balteatus instars placed onto the plant elicited no mobilisation of ants, which often removed the hoverfly successfully. Eggs and early instars appeared as the weak links for integrated pest management by hoverfly auxiliaries. 4. In contrast, L3 induced the number of ant patrollers to increase at a local scale without any further recruitment from inside the ant nest. L3 syrphids were quite efficient at gluing ants with defensive secretions and at resisting to removal attempts by ants. 5. While supporting the assumption that ants tune their defensive response to the aphidophagous predator, the present results also showed a lack of efficient protection of their trophobionts from the most voracious late syrphid instar.  相似文献

The syrphid flyEpisyrphus balteatus (de Geer) migrating from maple trees to leguminous plants in mid-April, assesses the qualitative and quantitative value of pea aphid colonies for securing successful development of her offspring. She selects young and “promising” pea aphid colonies of small size. This generally agrees with the “buy-futures” ovipositional tactic the syrphid fly adopts when it utilizes the maple aphids. The advantage of a “buy-futures” ovipositional tactic found in many syrphid species is discussed in comparison with other aphidophagous insects.  相似文献

The taxonomic and distributional statuses of the freshwater planarians of South America are imperfectly understood, and a comprehensive review is sorely needed. The species known from the vicinity of Buenos Aires, Argentina, was first described by Böhmig (1902) under the name Planaria dubia Borelli, 1895. Subsequent authors (Kenk, 1930, 1974; Cazzaniga & Curino, 1987) have cast doubt on this assignation. Some have assigned it to Dugesia anceps Kenk; Hyman (1959) was inclined to regard the Buenos Aires planarian as a geographical variant of Dugesia sanchezi Hyman. A comparison of D. sanchezi from the mountainous region of central Chile with specimens from Buenos Aires confirms that the Argentinian material is a distinct species.The differences between the two species are subtle. The Argentinian specimens are distinctive in their possession of infranucleate epithelia of the atria, penis, and bursal canal, as well as in their penial structure. In both species, the epithelia of the atria and bursal canal are glandular. Those of D. sanchezi are nucleate and their secretions are cyanophilous. In the Argentinian specimens, these same epithelia are infranucleate; but while the secretion of the bursal canal is indeed cyanophilous, that of the atrium is erythrophilous. The presence, in these same specimens, of cyanophilous glands opening into the penial vesicles, and of erythrophilous glands whose secretions contribute to a viscous plug in the ejaculatory duct, suggests a difference in the physiology of copulation.It is apparent that the Argentinian specimens are distinct from D. sanchezi Hyman, and probably they represent a new species, one to be described in detail elsewhere. In any case, Hyman's (1959) suggestion that D. sanchezi occurs near Buenos Aires is mistaken; so also is Cazzaniga's & Curino's (1987) identification of specimens from Buenos Aires as D. anceps.  相似文献

Synopsis Gymnocharacinus bergi is a rare Paranensean fish which is the only characiform almost lacking scales in the adult. It is endemic and the only species in a peculiar spot — a tributary of the Valcheta creek — in the Somuncurá plateau in northern Patagonia, Argentina, over 300 km from the nearest place with a paranensean fish fauna. Besides its geographical isolation, G. bergi occurs within an area with climatic features drastically different from those currently associated with fishes from Neotropical temperate zones. We tested the assumption that water temperature in the naked characin habitat do not agree with the northern Patagonia climate. We also considered the isolation of G. bergi within the framework of an increasing inpoverishment of the paranensean ichthyofauna along a NE-SW axis in the Buenos Aires province. For this we applied a decrement equation used in island biogeography. Our findings demonstrate that the existence of G. bergi in its isolated habitat is possible because of the thermal traits of the water at the sources of the creeks, its temperature being independent of the climate of the area. The chemical composition of water was found to be within the range of common environments in the Buenos Aires pampas inhabited by several species of Paranensean fishes. Geographically, G. bergi lives in the last of a series of habitats which show a decreasing number of species correlated with the increasing distance from the La Plata River. Conservation status of the species is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The species Huarpea wagneriella (Hymenoptera: Sapygidae), a cleptoparasite of nests of bees of the genera Xylocopa Latreille and Megachile Latreille (Hymenoptera: Apoidea), is reported for the first time as a cleptoparasite of Xylocopa ciliata Burmeister (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Rufous Hornero (Furnarius rufus) is an important host of the brood parasitic Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) in Uruguay, but not in nearby Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Eggs of the Shiny Cowbird are extremely variable in size, and horneros eject cowbird eggs with widths less than about 88% of the widths of their own eggs. Uruguayan cowbird eggs are, on average, 12% larger than those from Buenos Aires, a geographic pattern in egg size that corresponds to the pattern of successful host use. Uruguayan cowbird eggs are also wider per unit volume than eggs from Buenos Aires. Allometric analyses of egg width and volume indicate that this shape change is apparently an evolutionary response to selection exerted by the hornero. Such a response is absent in Buenos Aires because interactions between the cowbird and the hornero are probably of recent origin there.  相似文献

The addition of floral resources in a crop is the most commonly used conservation biological control strategy. The influence of additional floral resources on the abundance of aphidophagous syrphids has been studied in Mediterranean sweet-pepper greenhouses, in southeast Spain. Sweet alyssum and coriander were the plant species used as flowering plants, distributed in the greenhouse in several monospecific patches. In our first experiment the influence on syrphid pre-imaginal stages (larvae and pupae) was studied and adult stages were studied in a second experiment. A higher number of pre-imaginal syrphids was recorded in two replicated greenhouses where flowers were introduced, compared with two control greenhouses (without additional floral resources). To evaluate the effect on adults, 4 greenhouses were divided into 2 plots in each greenhouse and flowers were introduced in one plot per greenhouse. More hoverfly adults were observed in the plots where flowers had been introduced than in the control. The three most abundant syrphid species found were Eupeodes corollae, Episyrphus balteatus and Sphaerophoria rueppellii. Specimens from these species were dissected, and their pollen content was analysed to assess the food potential of the introduced flowers. The three syrphid species fed on pollen from both the flowering plants, as well as on sweet-pepper pollen. This conservation biological control strategy is an effective method to enhance native syrphid populations in Mediterranean sweet-pepper greenhouses.  相似文献

Summary A general review of knowledge complemented with personal observations ofEremothecium ashbyii, a high level fungus producer of riboflavin (vitamin B2), is made.Following a short history of the species, all the macro- and microscopic aspects of the cultures are investigated: hyphae, nuclei protoplasmatic inclusions, formation of sporangia (ascus) and spores germination of spores and appearance of riboflavin in the mycelial filaments. Bulbar forms, not previously reported in the literature, are described in this species for the first time. Finally, in view of the unusual morphology of the fungus, its systematic placing and phylogenetic relations are discussed.

Predators that inject prey with proteolytic enzymes, thereby breaking down their tissues for subsequent ingestion, run the risk that desiccation will hinder eventual retrieval of resources from these prey. Wounds made in capture might exacerbate this problem. However, desiccation rates of small syrphid flies Toxomerusmarginatus (Diptera: Syrphidae) killed by juvenile crab spiders Misumena vatia (Araneae: Thomisidae) and intact dead syrphid flies did not differ over the normal period of feeding, though desiccation rates in shade and sun differed several-fold. Neither the size of the spider (and presumably the size of the wounds it inflicted) nor the location of the wounds on the flies' bodies affected desiccation rates. Achlya robusta sp. nov. was found on litter (floating twigs, leaves, and roots) in an artificial polluted channel, near a petroleum refinery, in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. The species is described, illustrated and compared with other species of the genus. A. robusta produces mainly smooth and papillate, tuberculate or bullate oogonia and monoclinous antheridial branches. It develops spherical and subglobose oogonia, with the oogonial wall yellowish and containing mainly immature oospheres. The oospores are eccentric and ranging from (1) 4–17 (30) per oogonium.  相似文献
