Recent studies have led to the proposal that working memory operates not as a gateway between sensory input and long-term memory but as a workspace. The core of argument is that access to acquired knowledge and prior learning occurs before information becomes available to working memory. This proposition is a way to accomodate Baddeley's multiple component working memory model and the view that considers that working memory is nothing other than temporary activations of representations and procedures in long-term memory. However, this ‘workspace’ conception of working memory raises the question of the relationships between the central executive system and long-term memory.  相似文献

Are the information processing steps that support short-term sensory memory common to all the senses? Systematic, psychophysical comparison requires identical experimental paradigms and comparable stimuli, which can be challenging to obtain across modalities. Participants performed a recognition memory task with auditory and visual stimuli that were comparable in complexity and in their neural representations at early stages of cortical processing. The visual stimuli were static and moving Gaussian-windowed, oriented, sinusoidal gratings (Gabor patches); the auditory stimuli were broadband sounds whose frequency content varied sinusoidally over time (moving ripples). Parallel effects on recognition memory were seen for number of items to be remembered, retention interval, and serial position. Further, regardless of modality, predicting an item's recognizability requires taking account of (1) the probe's similarity to the remembered list items (summed similarity), and (2) the similarity between the items in memory (inter-item homogeneity). A model incorporating both these factors gives a good fit to recognition memory data for auditory as well as visual stimuli. In addition, we present the first demonstration of the orthogonality of summed similarity and inter-item homogeneity effects. These data imply that auditory and visual representations undergo very similar transformations while they are encoded and retrieved from memory.  相似文献

Working memory     
It is suggested that working memory comprises a system for the temporary storage and manipulation of information, forming an important link between perception and controlled action. Evidence is presented for a three-component model, comprising an attentional control system, the central executive, and two subsidiary slave systems. One of these the, the visuo-spatial sketchpad holds and manipulates spatial information, while the other, the phonological loop performs a similar function for auditory and speech-based information. Evidence is presented for the view that the phonological loop has evolved as a mechanism to facilitate the acquisition of language.  相似文献

Summary A specific mapping mechanism is defined as the basic unit of Biological Memory. This mechanism must account for the characteristic frequency patterns in the organic world, where future probability is a function of past experience. The conditions for the function of biological memory are analysed. It is found that asymmetry, and irreversibility as a consequence of complexity, are the basic principles of memory function. The essential asymmetries in genetic memory are pointed out, and the problem of bilateral symmetry in a basically asymmetrical organization is briefly outlined.Complexity is defined in terms of symmetry. The thermodynamic arrow of time and the biological arrow of time (trend of decreasing entropy) are discussed (in open systems) in relation to elementarity and complexity with their specific types of repeatabilities: non-accumulative in the first case and accumulative as a result of copy-reproduction by memory in the second case. The application of terminology from Information Theory and Thermodynamics to Memory Mechanics is critically considered.The immediate and inevitable consequences of memory function are shown to be irreversible expansion and irreversible, unpredictable diversification, leading to growing complexity and size on all but the sub-molecular levels of biological structure.  相似文献

Investigations of the processing of brief visual displays, and the explanation of such processing in terms of iconic memory, are reviewed. It is concluded that the concept of a pre-categorical sensory memory for visual material remains tenable. The ability to report material from brief visual displays is seen as depending upon parallel (and perhaps unlimited) transfer from iconic memory to a post-categorical memory mode, followed by a limited (and perhaps serial) transfer to an output stage. Decisions about, or responses to, items can only be made when they are in the output stage. Because transfer out of the post-categorical mode can be performed on the basis of pre-categorical stimulus features, pre-categorical information about items in the post-categorical mode must be accessible. One way in which this would be possible is if the transfer of an item into the post-categorical mode takes the form of the creation, to represent the item, of a temporary file of information including both pre-categorical and post-categorical features of the item. Any such feature can be used as the basis for selecting the item for transfer from the post-categorical mode to the output stage, for subsequent decision or report.  相似文献

Sensory-perceptual episodic memory and its context: autobiographical memory   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Episodic memory is reconceived as a memory system that retains highly detailed sensory perceptual knowledge of recent experience over retention intervals measured in minutes and hours. Episodic knowledge has yet to be integrated with the autobiographical memory knowledge base and so takes as its context or referent the immediate past of the experiencing self (or the 'I'). When recalled it can be accessed independently of content and is recollectively experienced. Autobiographical memory, in contrast, retains knowledge over retention intervals measured in weeks, months, years, decades and across the life span. Autobiographical knowledge represents the experienced self (or the 'me'), is always accessed by its content and, when accessed, does not necessarily give rise to recollective experience. Instead, recollective experience occurs when autobiographical knowledge retains access to associated episodic memories. In this reworking of the 'episodic memory' concept autobiographical memory provides the instantiating context for sensory-perceptual episodic memory.  相似文献

Olfactory recognition which occurs in the context pregnancy block by male pheromones is acquired with one-trial learning contingent on mating. A memory trace is established in the accessory bulb (AOB) and is represented by a gain in Gaba-ergic feedback inhibition of granule cells on excitatory glutaminergic mitral cells. This occurs in the sub-population of mitral cells that specifically respond to an individual male's pheromones, and is dependent on noradrenaline release at mating. Although relatively simple, the AOB has both structural and functional similarities with other trilaminar neural structures involved in learning, which suggests some evolutionary conservation of mechanisms subserving memory.  相似文献
