The agaric flora of the Godhavn region (W Greenland 69°15'–69°30'N) was studied by the authors in 1967, 1970–72, and 1977. 1125 collections were made and 150 taxa were recognized. It was found that the fungus flora varied very much in the different seasons. The authors attempt to join their experience from studies in other arctic and alpine areas. In total, the check–list shows that there is a large degree of similarity between the agaric flora of the Godhavn area and that of the Alps and the Scandinavian mountains, while the similarity with the European lowland flora is less than earlier assumed. Diet selection by vertebrate herbivores in the high arctic of Greenland   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Microhistological analysis of fecal droppings indicates that graminoids (sedges, grasses, and rushes) and the only willow present, Salix arctica , are primary food items of the muskox Ovibos moschatus , arctic hare Lepus arcticus , and collared lemming Dicrostonyx groenlandicus in northern Greenland (79°-83°N). Plant biomass available during the peak growing season varied with vegetation types from < 2 g m−2 in polar barrens to 34 g m−2 in sedge fens. The clustered distribution of vegetation minimizes competition among vertebrate herbivores.  相似文献

Abstract. Significant levels of nitrogenase activity (nitrogen fixation) were demonstrated in three species of Arctic legumes ( Oxytropis maydelliana, O. arctobia and Astragalus alpinus ) growing in high tundra at Sarcpa Lake, Melville Peninsula, N.W.T. Nitrogenase activity of intact plants was correlated with the number of nodules per plant, with field soil temperatures and limited by water shortage. Activity in freshly detached nodules showed a plateau of maximum activity between 10°C and 25°C and a near linear decline with temperature down to 0°C. Unusually, the segmented nodules of all three species are perennial in which growth and leghaemoglobin production resumes each spring from an overwintering apical meristem. Nodules are most numerous in the warmer soil stratum (2–10 cm. depth). Other studies indicate that the arctic rhizobia belong to a single cold-adapted species which has co-evolved with the legumes of tundra.  相似文献

Abstract. Species composition and biomass of four plant communities were investigated in two coastal polar desert areas in eastern North Greenland, bordering the North East Water Polynya - an ice-free sea area kept open by upwelling - and compared with inland areas in North Greenland. Herb barren, the poorest type, has a species richness of 6 species/m2, a cover of 0.7 %, and an aboveground biomass of 0.6 g/m2 (vascular plants). The richest type, Saxifraga oppositifolia snowbed, has 10 species/m2, 5.0 % cover, and 11.2 g/m2 biomass. A floristic and vegetation boundary exists a few kilometres from the coast. The coastal areas bordering the North East Water Polynya had an impoverished flora and vegetation compared to areas near the ice-covered sea, possibly caused by very low summer temperatures and high frequency of clouds. A new delimitation of the polar deserts of Greenland is proposed on the basis of the number of vascular plant species, the occurrence of species with a specific inland distribution in North Greenland and the dominating life forms. At present the polar desert zone includes only areas within a zone up to ca. 15 km from the outer coast of high arctic Greenland - north of ca. 80° N. Large areas formerly classified as polar deserts in eastern North Greenland, as well as in Washington Land in western North Greenland, are excluded. New floristic data confirm that Greenland is correctly included in the Canadian province of the arctic polar deserts, whereas there is no reason for subdividing the polar deserts of the Canadian province.  相似文献

During the growing season of 1981, we studied phenological patterns of development of vegetative shoots and sexual organs, partitioning of biomass and productivity, and partitioning and concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg for the evergreen dwarf shrub Cassiope tetragona (Ericaceae) at a high arctic lowland oasis at 79°N on Ellesmere Island, Canada. Short elongation (3.6 mm yr−1) and net production (5% of aboveground phytomass) of Cassiope were small. Vegetative and reproductive development were initialed just after snowmelt. Seasonal patterns of allocation of phytomass and nutrients to current growth were characterized by gradual accumulation of quantity over the growing season. However, concentrations of N, P, and K decreased by ca 50% in current tissues during the growing season, while Ca increased with tissue age. Overwinter storage of nutrients occurred in live aboveground shoots. The large proportion of phytomass that occurred as aboveground, attached dead material, as well as the small net production and belowground standing crop, suggest an allocation pattern more similar to that of high arctic cushion plants, than to other evergreen, ericaceous dwarf shrubs occurring at lower latitudes in the Arctic.  相似文献

Based on a series of collections made in New Zealand it is concluded that Nephroselmis longifilis and Bipedinomonas pyriformis are identical species, for which the correct name is Nephroselmis pyriformis (N. Carter) comb. nov. A detailed examination by light and electron microscopy is given, using material from geographically widely separated areas, including Greenland, the North Sea, a shallow Danish Fiord, Thailand and New Zealand. N. pyriformis is a temperature– and halotolerant species, as shown by its known range of occurrence at temperatures from 2.3°C (West Greenland) to ca. 28°C (Thailand) and at salinities between 3 and 36%o. Features of fine structural interest include details of the scaly covering on the flagellar and cell surfaces, the former very similar to those on the flagella of Tetraselmis cordiformis , a quadriflagellate prasinophyte. Within the cell, the pyrenoid shows an unusual fine structure, being penetrated by a number of membrane–lined pockets, in which the membranes are continuous with thylakoids. N. pyriformis is compared with other members of the genus, and a list of the few known species is included.  相似文献

The flora of silica-scaled chrysophytes (Chrysophyceae and Synurophyceae) is known from two previous investigations in southern Greenland, from Narssaq (61°N) and Nuuk (64°N).
In connection with a course in Arctic Biology 25.7.-20.8 1990 chrysophyte samples were obtained from altogether 53 localities, 41 from the Godhavn region in Disko Island (69°N) and 12 from S0ndre Str0mfjord (67°N). The localities were lakes, ponds and puddles, on basalt or an acid bedrock. Fixed samples were examined by EM, and altogether twenty species were identified by their silica scales. Eight of these were new to Greenland, viz. Spiniferomonas silverensis, Mallomonas acaroides, M. alpina, M. crassisquama (previous records proved to belong to M. duerrschmidliae), M. oviformis, M. paludosa, M. tonsurata , and Synura mammillosa. The composition of the flora is discussed from ecological and biogeographic viewpoints.  相似文献

The alliance Caricion bicolori-atrofuscae comprises plant communities of more or less wet calcareous fens on shallow peat with a high base saturation, occurring in arctic as well as alpine, more seldom subalpine areas. The characteristic species are presented and compared with those from communities of the Caricion lavallianae growing in lowland and mountain sites of temperate and boreal calcareous fens.An abbreviated ecological characteristic is given and the contact communities of the different community complexes are pointed out. The regional floristic differences within the communities are shown, and the geographical distribution and regional frequency of the differentiated associations are given. The synsystematic ranks of three central European mountain to alpine associations are discussed in detail (Caricetum frigidae, Juncetum alpini, Equiseto-Typhetum minimi). They should be excluded from this alliance.Generally, the alpine phytocoenoses are more often invaded by species from neighbouring communities, presumably as an effect of competition in sites less favouring fen development in comparison to the oro-arctic and arctic sites, especially those with an oceanic to suboceanic climate.We conclude, that the observed floristic differences are mainly caused by historical processes and not by the different ecology of the sites in question. This must be taken into consideration when discussing the synsystematic delimitation and rank of the corresponding communities.Nomenclature follows: Lid (1974), Nyholm (1954–68). Acknowledgement. The chemistry of the essential oil of Thymus praecox Opiz ssp. arcticus (E. Durand) Jalas from Greenland was studied with the intention of comparing it with the results obtained earlier from Icelandic material. All the 17 samples collected at different localities of South–West Greenland were found to contain linalyl acetate as main component besides some sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and some oxygenated sesquiterpenes. The variable content of the sesquiterpene alcohols, nerolidol and hedycaryol in the essential oil gave reason to define four different chemotypes. The pattern of the chemotype characterizing compounds was identical with that of four of the seven chemotypes found earlier to be the most widely distributed in Iceland, namely chemotypes B, C, D, and F. No correlation between the occurrence of a certain type and special environmental conditions was found. That the essential oil chemistry and the appearance of polychemism in the Greenland Thymus plants accords so well with that of the Icelandic ones, indicates that the distance of nearly 300 km between Iceland and Greenland has not led to locally limited "chemical races" within Thymus praecox ssp. arcticus. These findings are contrary to the results obtained in some Mediterranean Thymus species.  相似文献

The young of wading birds that breed in some parts of the arctic hatch when their insect food supply is most abundant. This appears to be the ultimate factor determining the date of egg-laying. In various other arctic birds the date of breeding may be influenced, directly or indirectly, by the time at which snow or ice melts. The Joint Biological Expedition to N.E. Greenland 1974 studied Ringed plovers Charadrius hiaticula , Dunlins Calidris aplina , Sanderlings Calidris alba , Knots Calidris canutus , and Turnstones Arenaria interpres breeding in various areas within 80 km of each other.
In 1974 the thaw was two or three weeks later than normal in the region. The time at which snow cleared and the dates of breeding of the waders differed considerably between valleys: breeding was delayed in valleys that cleared late. In all areas egg-laying ceased early in July, probably because chicks hatching from eggs laid later would not be ready to migrate by the end of the summer. Hence the mean date and length of the egg-laying period were determined by the date of snow clearance from the breeding areas.
Studies of the potential food resources indicate that the waders in N.E. Greenland do not appear to time their breeding so that the young hatch at some peak of food abundance. Sufficient food resources are probably available over a long period of time.  相似文献

中条山位于山西省南部,有木本植物478种,隶属于73科164属。其中裸子植物5科10属18种;单子叶植物2科2属6种;双子叶植物66科152属454种。分析结果表明,科、属、种的区系地理成分复杂多样,科的分布区类型以热带-亚热带-温带分布占优势,其次是温带分布;属的分布区类型以温带成分占优势,其中北温带分布型所占百分数最高,反映出该区系的温带性质;种的分布区类型中国特有分布的种数最多,其次是东亚分布、温带亚洲分布。该区系木本植物的起源具有古老性,区系地理成分的渗透性、交汇性和过渡性较明显。中条山是华北木本植物区系中珍稀濒危植物较为集中的地区,有国家级重点保护植物15种。  相似文献

The following species of Cortinarius subg. Dermocybe are recorded from Greenland: C. cinnamomeus, C. croceus, C. norvegicus, C. croceoconus, C. huronensis var. huronensis, C. uliginosus, C. cinnamomeoluteus , and C. polaris . Ecological and plant geographical features are discussed for each species. Cortinarius cinnamomeus and C. uliginosirs seem to be southern species never penetrating into the arctic zones; C. croceus, C. croceoconus, C. huronensis var. huronensis , and C. cinnamomeoluteus southern species penetrating into the arctic zones; and C. norvegicus and C. polaris true arctic species. Cortinarius norvegicus is probably continental, while the other species are distributed in continental as well as oceanic areas.  相似文献

Wild arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) from Greenland were tested for antibodies to Encephalitozoon cuniculi with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and a carbon immunoassay. Of 230 tested foxes none was seropositive. This finding contrasts with observations from other arctic areas and absence of rodents in the diet of these arctic foxes is the most likely explanation for absence of E. cuniculi.  相似文献

The study investigated the ecophysiological differences between populations of the Common frog( Rana temporaria L.) from different altitudes in northern England. Frog embryos in upland northern ponds experience very low temperatures during the period of embryonic development. These embryos were found to have a lower lethal limit for 50% normal development of2–8 °C, compared with3–8 °C for lowland embryos. These values are below most of the lower limiting temperature estimates previously obtained for R. temporaria . Embryos from upland ponds developed faster at low temperatures than embryos from lowland ponds. This may be an adaptation to the shorter growing season and lower temperatures at higher altitudes. Upland female frogs were found to be shorter and produced fewer eggs than lowland females. The differences found between lowland and upland frogs are discussed in terms of their potential adaptive significance.  相似文献

Polygon tundra characterizes large areas of arctic lowlands. The micro-relief pattern within polygons offers differentiated habitats for testate amoeba (testacean) communities. The objective of this study was to relate testacean species distribution within a polygon to the environmental setting. Therefore, testaceans from four cryosol pits dug at different locations within a low-centered polygon were studied in the context of pedological and pedochemical data, while ground temperature and ground moisture were measured over one summer season. The study site is located on the Berelekh River floodplain (Indigirka lowland, East Siberia). The environmental data sets reflect variations along the rim-to-center transect of the polygon and in different horizons of each pit. The testacean species distribution is mainly controlled by the soil moisture regime and pH. Most of the identified testaceans are cosmopolitans; eight species are described from an arctic environment for the first time. Differences in environmental conditions are controlled by the micro-relief of polygon tundra and must be considered in arctic lowland testacean research because they bias species composition and any further (paleo-)ecological interpretation.  相似文献

At a high arctic lowland on Ellesmere Island, heath communities dominated by Cassiope tetragona were widespread, and occurred in a variety of habitats that differred in time of snowmelt, relative site moisture, soil thaw depth, and air and soil temperature. Cover, standing crop, and production were dominated by woody plants, notably Cassiope tetragona and Dryas integrifolia . The Cassiope -dominated heaths were similar in composition to those at other Canadian high arctic localities, but were less similar to localities in Greenland and Spitzbergen. Compositional relationships among Cassiope -dominated heaths in different habitats at the study site may be largely determined by two interrelated environmental factors, time of snowmelt and site moisture.
Aboveground vascular plant biomass was concentrated near the ground surface, resulting in simple vertical structure that takes advantage of relatively warm soil and air temperatures in summer, and a protective snow cover in winter. Aboveground vascular plant standing crop was largely comprised of attached dead tissue, and there were equal proportions of above- and belowground biomass. Low community production was due to dominance by long-lived, slow-growing species, and to short growing seasons and cold temperatures. Overall character of Cassiope -dominated heaths reflects the conservative, stress tolerant growth strategy of the dominant species, Cassiope tetragona .  相似文献

Scale-bearing Chrysophyceae have been examined by means of light, scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopy. Samples were taken from nine arctic lakes in the Mackenzie Delta area of the Northwest Territories, Canada. Seventeen species of the genera Chrysosphaerella, Mallomonas, Paraphysomonas, Spiniferomonas and Synura have been identified. Included in these species are seven species previously unreported from northern Canada and one species reported only in North America. The composition of the chrysophycean flora from the Mackenzie Delta area lakes is compared with that of arctic lakes in the Saqvaqjuac area, Hudson Bay (N.W.T.), Alaskan lakes, and Greenland lakes.  相似文献

Abstract. We studied the relationship between plant N:P ratio, soil characteristics and species richness in wet sedge and tussock tundra in northern Alaska at seven sites. We also collected data on soil characteristics, above‐ground biomass, species richness and composition. The N:P ratio of the vegetation did not show any relationship with species richness. The N:P ratio of the soil was related with species richness for both vegetation types. Species richness in the tussock tundra was most strongly correlated with soil calcium content and soil pH, with a strong correlation between these two factors. N:P ratio of the soil was also correlated with soil pH. Other factors correlated with species richness were soil moisture and Sphagnum cover. Organic matter content was the factor most strongly correlated with species richness in the wet sedge vegetation. N:P ratio of the soil was strongly correlated with organic matter content. We conclude that N:P ratio in the vegetation is not an important factor determining species richness in arctic tundra and that species richness in arctic tundra is mainly determined by pH and flooding. In tussock tundra the pH, declining with soil age, in combination with Sphagnum growth strongly decreases species richness, while in wet sedge communities flooding over long periods of time creates less favourable conditions for species richness.  相似文献

Background and aims

Approximately 50 % of belowground organic carbon is present in the northern permafrost region and due to changes in climate there are concerns that this carbon will be rapidly released to the atmosphere. The release of carbon in arctic soils is thought to be intimately linked to the N cycle through the N cycle’s influence on microbial activity. The majority of new N input into arctic systems occurs through N2-fixation; therefore, N2-fixation may be the key driver of greenhouse gases from these ecosystems.

Methods

At Alexandra Fjord lowland, Ellesmere Island, Canada concurrent measurements of N2-fixation, N mineralization and nitrification rates, dissolved organic soil N (DON) and C, inorganic soil N and surface greenhouse gas fluxes (CO2, N2O and CH4) were taken in two ecosystem types (Wet Sedge Meadow and Dryas Heath) over the 2009 growing season (June-August). Using Structural Equation Modelling we evaluated the hypothesis that CO2, CH4 and N2O flux are linked to N2-fixation via the N cycle.

Results

The soil N cycle was linked to CO2 flux in the Dryas Heath ecosystem via DON concentrations, but there was no link between the soil N cycle and CO2 flux in the Wet Sedge Meadow. Methane flux was also not linked to the soil N cycle, nor surface soil temperature or moisture in either ecosystem. The soil N cycle was closely linked to N2O emissions but via nitrification in the Wet Sedge Meadow and inorganic N in the Dryas Heath, indicating the important role of nitrification in net N2O flux from arctic ecosystems.

Conclusions

Our results should be interpreted with caution given the high variability in both the rates of the N cycling processes and greenhouse gas flux found in both ecosystems over the growing season. However, while N2-fixation and other N cycling processes may play a more limited role in instantaneous CO2 emissions, these processes clearly play an important role in controlling N2O emissions.  相似文献

Aim  To produce a spatial clustering of Europe on the basis of species occurrence data for the land mammal fauna.
Location  Europe defined by the following boundaries: 11°W, 32°E, 71°N, 35°N.
Methods  Presence/absence records of mammal species collected by the Societas Europaea Mammalogica with a resolution of 50 × 50 km were used in the analysis. After pre-processing, the data provide information on 124 species in 2183 grid cells. The data were clustered using the k -means and probabilistic expectation maximization (EM) clustering algorithms. The resulting geographical pattern of clusters was compared against climate variables and against an environmental stratification of Europe based on climate, geomorphology and soil characteristics (EnS).
Results  The mammalian presence/absence data divide naturally into clusters, which are highly connected spatially and most strongly determined by the small mammals with the highest grid cell incidence. The clusters reflect major physiographic and environmental features and differ significantly in the values of basic climate variables. The geographical pattern is a fair match for the EnS stratification and is robust between non-overlapping subsets of the data, such as trophic groups.
Main conclusions  The pattern of clusters is regarded as reflecting the spatial expression of biologically distinct, metacommunity-like entities influenced by deterministic forces ultimately related to the physical environment. Small mammals give the most spatially coherent clusters of any subgroup, while large mammals show stronger relationships to climate variables. The spatial pattern is mainly due to small mammals with high grid cell incidence and is robust to noise from other subsets. The results support the use of spatially resolved environmental reconstructions based on fossil mammal data, especially when based on species with the highest incidence.  相似文献
