The effects of breeding territoriality on the stability of grey red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rufocanus bedfordiae) populations were investigated on a control grid and a grid on which the voles were fed, in an outdoor enclosure in Hokkaido, Japan. Vole populations were monitored by live trapping from 1984 to 1986: (1) Population density was 2–7 times greater on the experimental grid to which food was added than on the control grid. Reproductive output was more closely associated with the difference in density between grids than survival or dispersal (immigration and emigration) rates. (2) The number of adult females and pregnancy rate of the experimental population were significantly greater than those of the control one. The difference in the number of adult females between the populations was greater than that in pregnancy rate. (3) The proportion of successful litters and the number of weanlings per litter were not significantly different between the control and experimental population. (4) Adult females held territories on both the control and experimental grid; they were spaced out more than would be expected from random occupation. The territories overlapped more on the experimental grid than on the control grid. (5) Mean territory size of adult females on the experimental grid was about half of that on the control grid. The territory size was correlated negatively with population density. (6) The proportion of trap sites that were used by adult females was significantly greater on the experimental grid than on the control grid. This suggests that adult females on the experimental grid used the area more extensively. This factor, in association with territory size and overlapping of territory, was also important in causing the difference in the number of adult females between the grids. (7) These results call into question the hypothesis that territoriality stabilizes the density in populations of Clethrionomys. 相似文献

The ultrastructural features of Borrelia garinii found in the ear tissues of the vole, Clethrionomys rufocanus, are described. The spirochetes were observed in the interstitium of connective tissue or in contact with fibroblasts and were occasionally situated in the endoneurium of the peripheral nerves. The spirochetes did not injure or enter into the fibroblasts or Schwann cells. The cytotoxicity and migration of the spirochetes are also discussed. 相似文献

We studied the seasonal variation of adaptive humoral immunity (AHI) in northern red‐backed vole (Clethrionomys rutilus Pallas, 1779, RBV) and gray‐sided vole (C. rufocanus Sundevall, 1846, GSV) in Tomsk region of Western Siberia. Immunoresponsiveness (IR) to sheep red blood cells was assessed by the number of antibody‐producing cells in the spleen. The use of a generalized linear model to analyze the effects of species, sex, year of research, and season of withdrawal of individuals from nature on IR showed a significant effect of species identity, season of animal capture, and the interaction of species with season. The RBV demonstrated higher immune responses during a year, and both species had higher IR in winter. Suppression of IR in spring was greater, started earlier, and lasted longer (March–May) in GSV. In RBV, immunosuppression was restricted to April. The significant negative within year correlations of IR with body mass and masses of reproductive organs in GSV indicated a trade‐off between AHI and growth and reproduction processes. A probable explanation for the difference between species in the seasonal variation of AHI may be related to the difference in tropho‐energetic requirements of each vole species. GSV is a predominantly herbivorous rodent and its thermoregulation seems less efficient than of RBV. The deeper spring immunosuppression in GSV may explain in part its higher mortality during the season of colds. 相似文献

Differences in the mechanisms regulating reproduction between the northern red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rutilus) and large-toothed red-backed vole (Cl. rufocanus) have been revealed under vivarium conditions. In Cl. rufocanus, the date of birth is the most important ??signal?? factor for sexual maturation of male young of the year, while the effect of population density is significant only for males of the spring generation. Males of the summer generation fail to mature in the same year and are completely excluded from reproduction, which may be accounted for by a rise in the level of corticosterone (measured in fecal samples). Such a mechanism for regulating the numbers of reproductive individuals is absent in Cl. rutilus voles. Throughout the breeding season, males of this species respond to high population density by a decrease in the rate of sexual maturation. No definite relationship between sexual maturation and the level of adrenocortical activity has been revealed in Cl. rutilus. 相似文献

IntroductionThe present study was aimed to assess the in vivo hamster pial microvessel alterations due to 30 min transient bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) and reperfusion (60 min); moreover, the neuroprotective effects of Vaccinium myrtillus extract, containing 34.7% of anthocyanins, were investigated.ResultsIn age-matched control diet-fed hamsters, BCCAO caused a decrease in diameter of all arterioles. At the end of reperfusion, the reduction of diameter in order 3 arterioles was by 8.4 ± 3.1%, 10.8 ± 2.3% and 12.1 ± 1.1% of baseline in the 2, 4 and 6 month control diet-fed hamsters, respectively. Microvascular permeability and leukocyte adhesion were markedly enhanced, while perfused capillary length (PCL) decreased. The response to acetylcholine and papaverine topical application was impaired; 2’-7’-dichlorofluoresceine-diacetate assay demonstrated a significant ROS production. At the end of BCCAO, in age-matched Vaccinium myrtillussupplemented diet-fed hamsters, the arteriolar diameter did not significantly change compared to baseline. After 60 min reperfusion, order 3 arterioles dilated by 9.3 ± 2.4%, 10.6 ± 3.1% and 11.8 ± 2.7% of baseline in the 2, 4 and 6 month Vaccinium myrtillus supplemented diet-fed hamsters, respectively. Microvascular leakage and leukocyte adhesion were significantly reduced in all groups according to the time-dependent treatment, when compared with the age-matched control diet-fed hamsters. Similarly, the reduction in PCL was progressively prevented. Finally, the response to acetylcholine and papaverine topical application was preserved and there was no significant increase in ROS production in all groups.ConclusionsIn conclusion, Vaccinium myrtillusextract protected pial microcirculation during hypoperfusion-reperfusion, preventing vasoconstriction, microvascular permeability, leukocyte adhesion, reduction in PCL and preserving the endothelium function. 相似文献

Polymerase chain reaction-directed mitochondria (mt) and microsatellite DNA analyses were performed to examine the kin structure in a spring population of grey-sided voles Clethrionomys rufocanus in Hokkaido, Japan. The spatial distribution of 81 voles in a trapping grid (about 1 ha) was estimated by using the catch-mark-release method. DNA samples were extracted from the toes clipped for individual identification. Maternal lineages of voles were unequivocally determined by the mtDNA haplotypes, as identified by nucleotide sequencing of the control region. Relatedness between individuals was estimated based on the genotype and allele frequencies at several microsatellite loci. Although the distribution of voles was uniform within the grid, neighbouring females were frequently from the same maternal lineage. Relatedness values between females correlated negatively with geographical distances. Combination of the two molecular markers revealed four clusters of closely related, matrilineal females in the population, whereas no such cluster was apparent in males. The present study first demonstrated a sex-related spatial kin structure in a natural population of the grey-sided vole. 相似文献

Hokkaido virus (HOKV) is a member of the genus Hantavirus, in the family Bunyaviridae. To investigate HOKV infection in the host Myodes rufocanus, the grey red-backed vole, 199 animals were captured at Tobetsu (October 2004 and July 2005) and Nakagawa (October 2004) in Hokkaido, Japan, for detection of antibody, antigen, and viral RNA. In the surveys in Tobetsu (2004) and Nakagawa (2004), seropositive animals were detected at a frequency of 6.0% (5/84) and 10.4% (5/48), respectively. No seropositive animals were detected in Tobetsu in 2005. Seroprevalence in males in Tobetsu and Nakagawa in 2004 was 25% (1/4) and 45.5% (5/11), respectively, which was higher than in females, at 5.0% (4/80) and 0% (0/37), respectively (P<0.01). These results suggest that male animals play an important role in the maintenance of HOKV in M. rufocanus. Two females were seronegative but viral RNA-positive, indicating that these animals had acute infections before antibody was produced. Another five infected animals in Nakagawa were all male and had high levels of antibodies and viral RNA, suggesting that they had persistent infections. Viral RNA copies in organs of infected animals in Nakagawa were quantified by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Two acutely infected animals had > or = 10 times the number of RNA copies in their lungs compared to those of persistently infected animals. Cisplatin is one of the most effective chemotherapeutic agents but injury may occur at higher doses. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of bilberry on cisplatin induced toxic effects in rat ovary. Twenty-one female Wistar–Albino rats were utilized to form three groups: In group 1 (control group), each rat received intraperitoneal injection of 1 mL of 0.9 % NaCl saline solution during 10-days. In group 2 (cisplatin group), a single dose of 7.5 mg/kg b.w. cisplatin was given. In group 3 (cisplatin + bilberry group), a single dose of 7.5 mg/kg cisplatin and bilberry at 200 mg/kg b.w. were given for 10 days. Ovaries were surgically removed in all groups and prepared for biochemical and light microscopic investigations at the examination times. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) of tissue samples were measured. Histopathological damages in cisplatin administrated rats were seen such as severe edema, vascular congestion, hemorrhage and follicular degeneration in the ovary tissue. Moderate pathological alterations were observed in rats treated with bilberry plus cisplatin. Cisplatin administration significantly increased MDA production and decreased SOD, CAT, GPx and GST activities in the ovarian tissue when compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Cisplatin + bilberry administration increased antioxidant enzymes activities and reduced MDA levels. Bilberry administration seems to reduce the cisplatin induced ovarian toxicity thus it alleviates free radical damage. But it dose not protect completely rat ovary tissues. 相似文献

Variability in fruit mass may respond to environmental conditions, in addition to the genetic effect that has been reported in several reproductive features. We first analyzed fruit traits in 15 localities along an altitudinal gradient (300–2000 m a.s.l.) in the berries of Vaccinium myrtillus. We then tested whether changes in natural conditions, such as nutrient availability and herbivory by ungulates, affected fruit features in this species. Therefore, nitrogen (N) addition and clipping were applied in plots situated in six of the 15 localities. In these plots, we later collected fruits in two consecutive years in order to obtain fruit mass, seed number and initial number of ovules per flower ovary. Data along the altitudinal gradient showed that fruit mass was determined by both ovule number and seed number, although these factors only explained approximately half of the variation. Fruit mass and number of ovules and seeds followed a similar pattern with altitude, increasing until reaching a maximum at around 1700 m. Regarding the effect of the experimental treatments, fertilized non-clipped plants produced the heaviest fruits but clipping alone had no significant effect on fruit mass. Moreover, high soil pH had a positive influence on fruit mass. In addition, whereas the original number of ovules per ovary was not affected by the experimental treatments, the number of seeds per fruit increased and the abortion rate decreased in fertilized non-clipped plots, which means that the effect of simulated herbivory on these fruit traits depended on N addition. In conclusion, fruit mass was clearly affected by nutrient availability and this effect is attributed to an increase in the production of seeds rather than to an increase in module size and number of ovules per ovary. The aim of this paper is to review the experimental studies performed with two important species (i.e. Vaccinium myrtillus and Vaccinium vitis-idaea) of the shrub layer of boreal forests. The focus is on ecophysiology and stress tolerance under conditions of air pollution and global change. Our objective was to make an overview of studies of abiotic stress related to global change on the above species, and discuss the reported effects of these environmental factors. These issues include nitrogen, heavy metals, radionuclides, salt, ozone, carbon dioxide, warming climate, declining snow cover, periodic droughts, fire and elevated UV radiation. The findings suggest that both species are relatively tolerant to many abiotic environmental stresses: increased nitrogen and metal supply have negligible impacts on these species, as the atmospheric gaseous compounds reported. In some cases the effects are even positive, since extra nitrogen may improve the frost hardiness of V. vitis-idaea, and V. myrtillus may even benefit from elevated CO2. Both species also seem to recover well from fires. However, the reports demonstrated that both have species-specific areas of weakness: (1) V. myrtillus is susceptible to stress caused by warming winter, and (2) frost hardiness of V. vitis-idaea may be reduced under enhanced UV radiation. 相似文献

This paper discusses the relationship between aggressive behaviour and sexual maturity, prepubertal castration and wounding in male Bank voles, Clethrionomys glareolus. In neutral arena tests in the laboratory, sexually mature males exhibited more aggressive components of behaviour than immature males or than adult males that had been castrated prepubertally. Mature males also exhibited fewer amicable components than the immature or castrated males. During several months residence in large outdoor enclosures, mature males consistently had more fresh skin wounds (inflicted by other voles) than did either immature or castrated males. The relevance of these results to the population ecology of Bank voles is discussed. 相似文献

The numbers, densities and mean heights of the above-ground shoots of Vaccinium myrtillus growing in the geolittoral on a bank of the Muddusjokk river, N Sweden, were studied in relation to the position of the seasonal high-water level. V. myrtillus was constantly present in the upper half of the geolittoral belt, with its lower limit about 50 cm below the drift-line and its lowermost occurrence of all at 82 cm below. The vertical extent of the whole transect was 1.3 m. The vertical extent of the entire geolittoral was assessed by studying the distributions of a range of vascular plants and bryophytes. The upper geolittoral subdivision had a greater vertical extent (0.68 m) than the middle and lower ones (together 0.60 m). V. myrtillus does not appear to be a suitable indicator species for determining the local high-water levels along watercourses in N Sweden. 相似文献

The functional significance of masticatory muscle direction was estimated using a mechanical model in two murid rodents: the Japanese field mouse (Apodemus speciosus) and the gray red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rufocanus). Theoretical analyses of the data suggest that a balancing mechanism among the muscle forces occurs during incisal power stroke. The activation of the large deep masseter in both murids results in marked tensile separation of two hemimandibles at the flexible mandibular symphysis. Activation of the internal pterygoid decreases this large tensile force at the symphysis more efficiently than other muscles. The lines of action of the deep masseter and internal pterygoid are aligned to produce such a balancing function in both species studied here. The resultant force generated by the deep masseter on both sides is opposite in direction to the reaction force at the lower incisor tip. Therefore, the large deep masseter forms an effective mandibular support mechanism when the reaction forces during biting push the mandible downward. Because of the area of insertion and the line of action, the posterior temporalis appears to have an important role in stabilizing the position of the mandibular condyle in the glenoid fossa during incisal biting. The actions of masticatory muscles in relation to transverse grinding, associated with forward masticatory movement of the mandible, were investigated by using a mechanical model in the two murid rodents, the Japanese field mouse (Apodemus speciosus: subfamily Murinae) and the gray red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rufocanus: subfamily Arvicolinae). Furthermore, statics of the masticatory system on a sagittal plane while chewing is taking place were also analyzed in these rodents. The inward grinding movements of hemimandibles are generated by the posterior temporalis and internal and external pterygoids in both species. In addition to these muscles, the anterior temporalis also moves the hemimandibles lingually in Apodemus speciosus. The area of origin of the external pterygoid seems more advantageous for transverse grinding in A. speciosus than in Clethrionomys rufocanus. On the basis of the static analysis, the anterodorsal area of origin of the external pterygoid to the upper second and third molars in Clethrionomys rufocanus appears to be an adaptive character to prevent the jaw joints from dislocation during occlusion at a posterior point on the elongated row of cheek teeth. 相似文献

长期定位试验表明:施肥对灰漠土生物类群、酶活性有一定影响,同时生物类群和酶活性也改变了土壤生态环境.(1) 施肥对灰漠土动物个体及类群数的影响显著,长期单施化肥对土壤动物优势度作用较大,化肥配施有机肥丰富了土壤动物组成,化肥配施秸秆有利于增加土壤动物的丰度,尤其是疣跳科和等节跳科动物个体数量增加近10倍,长期不施肥土壤动物均匀性较高,但优势类群数较低;(2)灰漠土微生物组成以细菌为主,特殊微生物生理类群是以固氮菌和氨化细菌数量居多.长期单施化肥不利于土壤微生物生长,几种菌类数量均较低,化肥配施有机物料增加了土壤微生物类群数量,比对照增加15%~44%,长期不施肥土壤微生物数量高于单施化肥处理.(3) 灰漠土自身过氧化氢酶含量较高,蔗糖酶次之.土壤4种酶活性中除过氧化氢酶与土壤养分之间呈负相关以外,其余3种酶活性与土壤速效养分均呈正相关或显著正相关.长期单施化肥土壤脲酶、磷酸酶活性降低,长期不施肥土壤脲酶、磷酸酶活性高于单施化肥处理,化肥配施有机肥或秸秆的土壤脲酶、蔗糖酶、磷酸酶活性比长期不施肥增加了24%~31%.因此,化肥配施有机物料增加了土壤酶活性,加速了土壤熟化,改变了土壤生态环境. 相似文献
