The plasma was produced by focusing Nd:YAG laser pulses of 1064 nm wavelength on to a copper target at laser fluences of 5.35, 6.95, and 9.33 J/cm2. An ion collector placed along the target surface normal was used to record the time-of-flight (TOF) ion signal during plasma expansion in vacuum. The TOF ion pulses were deconvoluted using the Coulomb-Boltzmann-shifted function to estimate the available Cu ion charge states, equivalent plasma ion temperature, and accelerating potential in the nonequilibrium plasma. The maximum available ion charge state, equivalent plasma ion temperature, and accelerating potential are found to increase with laser fluence. In the local thermal equilibrium conditions, the accelerating potential can be supposed to apply across a distance of the order of the Debye length. The Debye length and, hence, the electric field in the laser produced plasma at three laser fluences values were estimated. The electric field was in the range of 1 MV/cm and increased with laser fluence. In the laser fluence range used in this work, the sum of thermal and adiabatic energy of the ion was slightly higher than its Coulomb energy.  相似文献

The plasma parameter studies of the Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet, Nd:Y3Al15O12) crystal by using the fundamental (1064 nm) and second (532 nm) harmonics of Nd:YAG laser are reported. The electron temperature (T e ) and electron number density (N e) were determined using the Boltzmann plot method and the Stark-broadened line profile, respectively. An increase in the plasma parameters have been observed with an increase in the laser irradiance for both laser modes. The electron temperatures were calculated in the range of 0.53–0.66 eV for 1064 nm and 0.47–0.60 eV for 532 nm, and the electron number densities were determined in the range of 7.43 × 1015–3.27 × 1016 cm?3 for 1064 nm and 1.35 × 1016–3.97 × 1016 cm?3 for 532 nm in the studied irradiance range of 1.19–12.5 GW/cm2. However, the spatial evolution of the plasma parameters investigated up to 2.75 mm away from the target surface at a fixed laser irradiance of 6.51 GW/cm2 showed a decreasing trend. In addition, the estimated values of the inverse bremsstrahlung (IB) absorption coefficients at both laser wavelengths showed that the IB process is dominant for the 1064-nm laser.  相似文献

Hot plasmas can be generated by fast and intense laser pulses ablating solids placed in vacuum. A Nd:Yag laser operating at the fundamental and second harmonics with 9-ns pulses (maximum energy of 900 mJ) focused on metallic surfaces produces high ablation yields of the order of μg/pulse and dense plasma that expands adiabatically at supersonic velocity along the normal to the target surface. The plasma emits neutral and charged particles. Charge states up to 10+ have been measured in heavy elements ablated with intensities of the order of 1010 W/cm2. The ion temperature of the plasma is evaluated from the ion energy distributions measured with an ion energy analyzer. The electron temperature is measured through Faraday cups placed at the end of long drift tubes by using time-of-flight technique. The neutral temperature is measured with a special mass quadrupole spectrometer placed along the normal to the target surface. The plasma temperature increases with the laser pulse intensity. The ion temperature reaches values of the order of 400 eV, the electron temperature is of the order of 1 keV for hot electrons and 0.1 eV for thermal electrons, and the neutral temperature is of the order of 200 eV. The experimental apparatus, the diagnostic techniques, and the procedures for the plasma temperature characterization will be presented and discussed in detail. The acceleration of ions of different species from a plasma slab under the action of a charge-separation electric field driven by hot and cold electrons is studied by using a hybrid Boltzmann-Vlasov-Poisson model. The obtained spatial and energy distributions of light and heavy ions in different charge states demonstrate that the model can be efficiently used to study the ion composition in a multispecies expanding laser plasma. The regular features of the acceleration of ions of different species are investigated. The formation of compression and rarefaction waves in the halo of light ion impurity, as well as their effect on the energy spectrum of the accelerated ions, is analyzed. An approach is proposed that makes it possible to describe the production of fast ions by laser pulses of a given shape. It is shown that the energy of fast ions can be increased markedly by appropriately shaping the pulse. The effect of heating of the bulk of the cold target electrons on the ion acceleration is discussed.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental and theoretical studies of the efficiency of using a CO2 laser to create a high-power source of 13- to 14-nm EUV radiation for lithography. For a laser intensity of ∼2 × 1011 W/cm2, a conversion efficiency of k EUV ≃ 1.5% was achieved on a plane solid Sn target. The calculated gas dynamics and population kinetics of Sn plasma ions agree qualitatively with experimental results.  相似文献

The screening of the grain charge in a nonequilibrium plasma is studied with allowance for electron and ion fluxes to the grain surface and the bulk processes of production and loss of charged particles in an argon plasma. The objective of the paper is to investigate how the conversion of monatomic Ar+ ions into diatomic Ar2+ ions influences the screening of the dust grain charge in a plasma produced by an external gas ionization source. It is found that the conversion of positive ions leads to the onset of a second ion species in the plasma and, as a consequence, to a three-exponential screening of the grain charge; moreover, in a certain range of plasma parameters, all three screening constants are of the same order of magnitude. Analytical results are compared with the data of numerical simulations carried out based on the drift-diffusion approximation.  相似文献

RNAs are highly negatively charged chain molecules. Metal ions play a crucial role in RNA folding stability and conformational changes. In this work, we employ the recently developed tightly bound ion (TBI) model, which accounts for the correlation between ions and the fluctuation of ion distributions, to investigate the ion-dependent free energy landscape for the three-way RNA junction in a 16S rRNA domain. The predicted electrostatic free energy landscape suggests that 1), ion-mediated electrostatic interactions cause an ensemble of unfolded conformations narrowly populated around the maximally extended structure; and 2), Mg2+ ion-induced correlation effects help bring the helices to the folded state. Nonelectrostatic interactions, such as noncanonical interactions within the junctions and between junctions and helix stems, might further limit the conformational diversity of the unfolded state, resulting in a more ordered unfolded state than the one predicted from the electrostatic effect. Moreover, the folded state is predominantly stabilized by the coaxial stacking force. The TBI-predicted folding stability agrees well with the experimental measurements for the different Na+ and Mg2+ ion concentrations. For Mg2+ solutions, the TBI model, which accounts for the Mg2+ ion correlation effect, gives more improved predictions than the Poisson-Boltzmann theory, which tends to underestimate the role of Mg2+ in stabilizing the folded structure. Detailed control tests indicate that the dominant ion correlation effect comes from the charge-charge Coulombic correlation rather than the size (excluded volume) correlation between the ions. Furthermore, the model gives quantitative predictions for the ion size effect in the folding energy landscape and folding cooperativity.  相似文献

Ion interactions with nucleic acids (both DNA and RNA) are an important and evolving field of investigation. Positively charged cations may interact with highly negatively charged nucleic acids via simple electrostatic interactions to help screen the electrostatic repulsion along the nucleic acids and assist their folding and/or compaction. Cations may also bind at specific sites and become integral parts of the structures, possibly playing important enzymatic roles. Two popular methods for computationally exploring a nucleic acid’s ion atmosphere are atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the Poisson–Boltzmann (PB) equation. In general, monovalent ion results obtained from MD simulations and the PB equation agree well with experiment. However, Bai et al. (2007) observed discrepancies between experiment and the PB equation while examining the competitive binding of monovalent and divalent ions, with more significant discrepancies for divalent ions. The goal of this project was to thoroughly investigate monovalent (Na+) and divalent (Mg2+) ion distributions formed around a DNA duplex with MD simulations and the PB equation. We simulated three different cation concentrations, and matched the equilibrated bulk ion concentration for our theoretical calculations with the PB equation. Based on previous work, our Mg2+ ions were fully solvated, the expected state of Mg2+ ions when interacting with a duplex, when the production simulations began and remained throughout the simulations (Kirmizialtin, 2010; Robbins, 2012). Na+ ion distributions and number of Na+ ions within 10?Å of the DNA obtained from our two methods agreed well. However, results differed for Mg2+ ions, with a lower number of ions within the cut-off distance obtained from the PB equation when compared to MD simulations. The Mg2+ ion distributions around the DNA obtained via the two methods also differed. Based on our results, we conclude that the PB equation will systematically underestimate Mg2+ ions bound to DNA, and much of this deviation is attributed to dielectric saturation associated with high valency ions.  相似文献

An expression for the ion?ion coupling in a multicomponent plasma jet is derived for an arbitrary ratio between the thermal and relative velocities of the components. The obtained expression is used to solve the problem on the expansion of a current-carrying plasma microjet emitted from the cathode surface into vacuum. Two types of plasmas with two ion components are analyzed: (i) plasma in which the ion components of equal masses are in the charge states Z 1= +1 and Z 2= +2 and (ii) plasma with ions in equal charge states but with the mass ratio m 1/m 2 = 2. It is shown that, for such plasmas, the difference between the velocities of the plasma components remains substantial (about 10% of the average jet velocity in case (i) and 15% in case (ii)) at distances of several centimeters from the emission center, where it can be measured experimentally, provided that its initial value at the emitting cathode surface exceeds a certain threshold. This effect is investigated as a function of the mass ratio and charge states of the ion components.  相似文献

Laser spectroscopy measurements of the effective temperature of Ar1+ ions in the PNX-U multipole trap, in which argon plasma is ionized and heated by microwaves under electron-cyclotron-resonance conditions, are performed using a narrow-band tunable dye laser. The absorption profile of the 611.5-nm line is examined. In a microwave power range of 5–50 kW, the observed behavior of the effective temperature of argon ions Ti, eff indicates an anomalous mechanism for ion heating. It is shown that certain information about the electron temperature can be deduced from measurements by the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technique. The measurements performed also serve to test the laser technique and apparatus that is presently being developed for diagnosing additives to the ITER divertor plasma by the LIF method.  相似文献

Ion currents onto the exit plane of the acceleration channel of a stationary plasma thruster model were measured using electrostatic probes the collecting surfaces of which could be oriented either upstream or downstream with respect to the thruster plume. Using the results of measurements, the so-called “back” flows of charge-exchange ions onto the exit plane are estimated. It is shown that the back ion flows are the most intense in the close vicinity of the thruster, but do not exceed 0.6% of the total ion flow from the thruster. The formation of steady-state ion flows near the exit from the acceleration channel of a stationary plasma thruster is simulated numerically by using a three-dimensional kinetic model that describes the dynamics of ions and neutral atoms exhausting from the acceleration channel and produced in the thruster plume and takes into account resonance charge exchange of ions with neutral atoms. The distribution of the back ion current density in the exit plane is determined. The effect of the flow rate of the working gas through the cathode on the distributions of the neutral atom density and charge-exchange ion flows is demonstrated. The obtained results can be used to analyze the effect of the thruster plume on the charge state of the surfaces located in the vicinity of the thruster.  相似文献

The possibility of using a Hall-current accelerator to extract ions from a partially ionized plasma produced by selective laser isotope photoionization of atomic vapor is examined. A mechanism for ion acceleration is investigated using one-dimensional time-dependent equations of two-fluid magnetohydrodynamics. The current cutoff due to the ion space charge is prevented by electron emission. It is shown that, at an accelerating voltage of 25–50 V and emission current density of several mA/cm2, the ion component is accelerated throughout the entire plasma volume up to a velocity of ~105 cm/s in a few microseconds. The influence of resonant charge exchange and secondary ionization by electrons on both the acceleration dynamics and selectivity degradation is taken into account. It is shown that the Hall-current extractor allows one to avoid selectivity degradation even when the plasma size exceeds the charge-exchange mean free path by one order of magnitude.  相似文献

In measuring the charge and energy spectra of the ions of a single-element laser plasma, in addition to thermal ions, fast multicharged ions are recorded that are accelerated by the electric field of laser radiation in the region of the critical plasma density. The charge and energy spectra of Co ions with the charge numbers z=1–3 are measured at laser intensities of q=5×1011–1012 W/cm2. The energy spectra of these ions are broad and are located on the high-energy side (z max=3, E>5.0 keV) with respect to the thermal ions (z max=9, E<4.0 keV). The increase in q to 1014 W/cm2 results in an increase in the charge number of both thermal and fast ions.  相似文献

Silver-exchanged silicate glass has been irradiated by 532-nm pulsed Nd:YAG laser in order to locally form metallic nanoparticles. The particular interest of this process is to locally control the silver nanoparticles (NPs) growth. Silver ions are exchanged with sodium ions near the glass surface after dumping of a silicate glass few minutes in silver and sodium nitrates molten salt. A low-energy density laser exposure (0.239 J/cm2) chosen at the ablation threshold allows to observe the kinetics of the silver NPs growth according to the increasing shots number. An on-line optical measurement is carried out after each shot to identify the most important steps during the irradiation process. According to this measurement, we have determined four steps highlighted by UV/Visible spectrophotometry and we have identified the influence of located surface plasmon resonance. Three combined material analysis methods were used to understand the glass/laser interaction mechanism: we outlined the material volume variations by profilometric method, the element distribution by scanning electron microscopy and finally the structural distribution of the irradiated region by a local infrared investigation. The trend for NPs formation revealed by the UV/Visible spectrophotometry is thus explained by the formation of a ring expelled from a central hole. We highlight that the on-line extinction measurement can be used to data process the NPs evolution.  相似文献

Charging of two conducting spheres in a weakly ionized collisional plasma flow is considered. The spheres are arranged along the flow, and the plasma is assumed to consist of two ion species with the charges equal in magnitude but opposite in sign. The problem is analyzed with allowance for the external electric field, charging of the spheres due to the sedimentation of plasma ions on them, the fields of the sphere charges, the space charge field, and the processes of recombination and molecular diffusion. The interaction between the spheres and plasma is studied by numerically solving a time-dependent problem in a bispherical coordinate system by the finite difference method. The steady-state values of the sphere charges and the distributions of the space charge and ion densities in the ambient plasma are found as functions of the plasma parameters and the distance between the spheres. The electrostatic forces acting on the spheres are determined, and the effects of the external field, the space charge fields, and the fields of the sphere charges are comparatively analyzed. It is shown that, for the considered plasma parameters, the main electrostatic effect in the interaction between two spheres is their mutual approach in the external field due to the difference in their charges (one sphere catches up with the other). Due to the friction force with the neutral gas, this mutual approach is much slower than all other processes in the system. For widely spaced spheres, the results coincide with the solution obtained previously for a solitary sphere.  相似文献

Synchronous neurotransmitter release is mediated by the opening of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels and the build-up of submembrane Ca2+ microdomains. Previous models of Ca2+ microdomains have neglected possible electrostatic interactions between Ca2+ ions and negative surface charges on the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane. To address the effects of these interactions, we built a computational model of ion electrodiffusion described by the Nernst-Planck and Poisson equations. We found that inclusion of a negative surface charge significantly alters the spatial characteristics of Ca2+ microdomains. Specifically, close to the membrane, Ca2+ ions accumulate, as expected from the strong electrostatic attraction exerted on positively charged Ca2+ ions. Farther away from the membrane, increasing the surface charge density results in a reduction of the Ca2+ concentration because of the preferential spread of Ca2+ ions along lateral directions. The model also predicts that the negative surface charge will decrease the spatial gradient of the Ca2+ microdomain in the lateral direction, resulting in increased overlap of microdomains originating from different Ca2+ channels. Finally, we found that surface charge increases the probability of vesicle release if the Ca2+ sensor is located within the electrical double layer, whereas this probability is decreased if the Ca2+ sensor lies at greater distances from the membrane. Our data suggest that membrane surface charges exert a significant influence on the profile of Ca2+ microdomains, and should be taken into account in models of neurotransmitter release.  相似文献

The stability constants for the calcium and magnesium complexes of rhodanese are >105m?1 at both high and low substrate concentrations. The stoichiometry of alkaline earth metal ion binding totals close to 1 per 18,500 molecular weight. The usual assay reagents contain sufficient amounts of these metal ions to maintain added enzyme in its metal-complexed form. When reaction mixtures are treated with oxalate to remove calcium ions, inhibition of rhodanese activity is virtually complete under circumstances such that the contribution of magnesium ion is low.Zinc and a number of transition metal ions are inhibitors of rhodanese activity. Studies of the concentration dependence of these effects with zinc, copper, and nickel showed that: 1) Some cyanide complexes of these metals are competitive with the donor substrate, thiosulfate ion. The binding of the copper and zinc complexes is mutually competitive. 2) Another cyanide species of copper appears to combine with the free enzyme to form a functionally active complex. 3) The zinc cyanide species with a net positive charge is an inhibitor competitive with the acceptor substrate, cyanide ion.All of these observations are consistent with a model in which metal ions serve as the electrophilic site of rhodanese.  相似文献

We present the optical emission studies of the ammonium nitrate plasma produced by the fundamental (1064 nm) and second (532 nm) harmonics of a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser. The target material was placed in front of the laser beam in an open atmospheric air. The spectrum reveals numerous transitions of neutral nitrogen. We have studied the spatial behavior of the plasma temperature (T e ) and electron number density (N e ) determined using the Boltzmann plot method and Stark broadened line profiles, respectively. Besides, we have studied the variation of the plasma parameters as a function of the laser irradiance.  相似文献

Background and Objective

Transcranial low-level laser therapy (LLLT) using near-infrared light can efficiently penetrate through the scalp and skull and could allow non-invasive treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI). In the present study, we compared the therapeutic effect using 810-nm wavelength laser light in continuous and pulsed wave modes in a mouse model of TBI.

Study Design/Materials and Methods

TBI was induced by a controlled cortical-impact device and 4-hours post-TBI 1-group received a sham treatment and 3-groups received a single exposure to transcranial LLLT, either continuous wave or pulsed at 10-Hz or 100-Hz with a 50% duty cycle. An 810-nm Ga-Al-As diode laser delivered a spot with diameter of 1-cm onto the injured head with a power density of 50-mW/cm2 for 12-minutes giving a fluence of 36-J/cm2. Neurological severity score (NSS) and body weight were measured up to 4 weeks. Mice were sacrificed at 2, 15 and 28 days post-TBI and the lesion size was histologically analyzed. The quantity of ATP production in the brain tissue was determined immediately after laser irradiation. We examined the role of LLLT on the psychological state of the mice at 1 day and 4 weeks after TBI using tail suspension test and forced swim test.

Results

The 810-nm laser pulsed at 10-Hz was the most effective judged by improvement in NSS and body weight although the other laser regimens were also effective. The brain lesion volume of mice treated with 10-Hz pulsed-laser irradiation was significantly lower than control group at 15-days and 4-weeks post-TBI. Moreover, we found an antidepressant effect of LLLT at 4-weeks as shown by forced swim and tail suspension tests.

Conclusion

The therapeutic effect of LLLT for TBI with an 810-nm laser was more effective at 10-Hz pulse frequency than at CW and 100-Hz. This finding may provide a new insight into biological mechanisms of LLLT.  相似文献
