Clonal growth is of great importance for survival, growth, expansion, and resource utilization of some species. Knowing how clonal plants respond morphologically and physiologically to different light environments can be useful to explain their occurrence and abundance patterns under specific environmental conditions. Responses of clonal growth, leaf gas exchange, fluorescence emission, and photosynthetic pigment concentrations to different light environments (100, 60, 30, and 15%) were studied in Amomum villosum, grown in the traditional way for economic purpose in Xishuangbanna, southwest China. The results showed that A. villosum attained vigorous clonal growth under 30% and 60% light, with a higher plant height, number of ramets, stolon length, thicker stems and stolons. Shade-grown A. villosum possessed a larger leaf area than that of the sun-grown plants in order to capture more light. For A. villosum, the higher light-saturated net photosynthetic rate, light-saturation point, larger fresh and dry biomass can explained the better clonal growth for A. villosum under 30% and 60% light. Amomum villosum attained the highest values of minimal chlorophyll fluorescence under 100% light and the lowest values of maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII under 15% light. Our findings indicated that the full irradiance was too strong and 15% light was too weak for A. villosum plants. It was also verified by higher concentrations of photosynthetic pigments in the shaded plants compared to those grown under full sun light. Our results suggested that A. villosum seemed to be adapted to moderate light environment (60–30%) which was indicated by vigorous clonal growth and higher photosynthesis. This information is very useful to select clonal species for rainforest or understory projects. The cultivation of A. villosum in rainforest should not be done under too strong (100%) or too weak light environment (less than 15%).  相似文献

Pronounced strategy shifts along ontogeny have been observed in several tree species, mainly because of the trend to maximize growth during the seedling stage, which constitutes the most vulnerable part of the tree’s life cycle. Our aim here was to analyze the ontogenetic changes in crown characteristics and light capture patterns in three Quercus species: the evergreens Quercus ilex and Quercus suber and the deciduous Quercus faginea co-occurring in a Mediterranean open woodland. The seedlings were distributed in the large clearings among the adults and received full sunlight. We constructed three-dimensional models of the aerial parts of seedlings and mature trees of the three species, using the YplantQMC program. Large differences between growth stages were observed for all variables. The seedlings exhibited smaller branch sizes and crown densities than those observed in the adult trees. Leaf angles to horizontal also tended to increase during ontogeny, whereas leaf dispersion and the observed distances between leaves tended to decrease. The amount of photosynthetic radiation absorbed per unit leaf area throughout the growing season was lower in adult specimens than in young specimens. Changes in absorption efficiency during ontogeny were more intense for the species with longer leaf life span at maturity. We conclude that more intense ontogenetic shifts in species with longer leaf life span reflect the priority change from the maximization of short-term productivity at the seedling stage to maximizing leaf longevity during the adult stage.  相似文献

The inhibition of photorespiration can be used to improve plant carbon fixation. In order to compare the effects of three photorespiration inhibitors [glycine, NaHSO3, and isonicotinyl hydrazide (INH)], photosynthetic parameters of leaves sprayed respectively with these chemicals were examined and their inhibiting efficiency was evaluated in Caragana korshinskii. Our results showed that 5 mM glycine could reduce the photorespiratory rate (PR) effectively, while the net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) significantly increased. The ratio of electron flow for ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylation to RuBP oxygenation was elevated markedly. NaHSO3 and INH could also suppress the PR in some cases, whereas PN was not improved. The glyoxylate content increased considerably after application of low concentrations of glycine. These results suggested that low concentrations of glycine could suppress photorespiration by feed-back inhibition of glyoxylate and enhance photosynthesis by regulating gs, Ci, and the distribution of electron flow in C. korshinskii.  相似文献

Changes of chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence and photosynthetic pigment contents were analysed in galled leaves (visibly damaged and undamaged parts) and intact leaves. The values of minimal fluorescence of the dark-adapted state, maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, effective quantum yield of PSII photochemical conversion, and photochemical quenching coefficient decreased in Ulmus pumila L. leaves galled by Tetraneura ulmi (L.) and in U. glabra Huds. galled by Eriosoma ulmi (L.). Colopha compressa (Koch.) feeding affected these parameters only in damaged parts of U. laevis Pall. galled leaves. The increasing number of T. ulmi galls progressively decreased photosynthetic performance. In gall tissues of all analysed aphid species, the lowest photosynthetic pigment content was found, indicating that the photosynthetic capacity must have been low in galls. Significant reduction of Chl and carotenoid contents were observed in damaged and undamaged portions of galled leaves only in the case of T. ulmi feeding.  相似文献

The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the simultaneous action of light stress and salinity. Pulse amplitude modulated chlorophyll fluorescence, P700 redox state, and pigment analysis were used to assess the impact of high light intensity on Paulownia tomentosa × fortunei and Paulownia elongata × elongata grown on soils with different salinity. It was found that light stress reduced the amount of pigments and the efficiency of photochemical energy conversion, inhibited the maximum and the effective quantum yields of PSII photochemistry, decreased photochemical quenching and photosynthetic rate. Data also showed influence on the primary quinone acceptor (QA) reoxidation, which led to the restriction of the electron flow from QA to plastoquinone and stimulation of the cyclic electron flow. The possible reasons for the increased effects of the light stress under conditions of high salt concentration in soil for Paulownia tomentosa × fortunei are discussed.  相似文献

This study addressed whether competition under different light environments was reflected by changes in leaf absorbed light energy partitioning, photosynthetic efficiency, relative growth rate and biomass allocation in invasive and native competitors. Additionally, a potential allelopathic effect of mulching with invasive Prunus serotina leaves on native Quercus petraea growth and photosynthesis was tested. The effect of light environment on leaf absorbed light energy partitioning and photosynthetic characteristics was more pronounced than the effects of interspecific competition and allelopathy. The quantum yield of PSII of invasive P. serotina increased in the presence of a competitor, indicating a higher plasticity in energy partitioning for the invasive over the native Q. petraea, giving it a competitive advantage. The most striking difference between the two study species was the higher crown-level net CO2 assimilation rates (Acrown) of P. serotina compared with Q. petraea. At the juvenile life stage, higher relative growth rate and higher biomass allocation to foliage allowed P. serotina to absorb and use light energy for photosynthesis more efficiently than Q. petraea. Species-specific strategies of growth, biomass allocation, light energy partitioning and photosynthetic efficiency varied with the light environment and gave an advantage to the invader over its native competitor in competition for light. However, higher biomass allocation to roots in Q. petraea allows for greater belowground competition for water and nutrients as compared to P. serotina. This niche differentiation may compensate for the lower aboveground competitiveness of the native species and explain its ability to co-occur with the invasive competitor in natural forest settings.  相似文献

The effects of the exogenous application of nitric oxide (NO, in the form of sodium nitroprusside, SNP) on the diurnal variation in photosynthesis, chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence, light response curve and the net assimilation of CO2 against intercellular CO2 concentration (A-Ci) curve parameters were investigated in the leaves of bamboo (Indocalamus barbatus McClure) exposed to simulated acid rain (SAR, pH 3.0) stress. According to the results of the diurnal variation in photosynthesis, foliar applications of 100–400 mg/L SNP effectively inhibited the decrease in net photosynthetic rate (Pn) as a result of non-stomatal factors, and mitigated midday depression under acid rain stress. The mitigating effect was most pronounced at 400 mg/L SNP. However, at higher concentrations of SNP (700 and 1000 mg/L), the mitigating effect became weak and even counterproductive. The results of the chlorophyll content, light response and A-Ci curve parameters suggested that the regulating role of NO against acid rain in the photosynthetic processes occurs through improving not only the efficiency of the light-harvesting and the activity of photosynthetic apparatus, but also the absorption of CO2 and the availability of CO2 for photosynthesis. The results of the chlorophyll fluorescence investigation further indicated that NO protected PSII activity from the damage of acid rain toxicity by enhancing the electron transport activity and photochemical efficiency, especially concerning the increase in the proportion of PSII open reaction centers. Furthermore, NO induced an increase in photorespiration (Rp), rather than an increase in non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), to dissipate the excessive excitation energy, which provided some protection to the photosynthetic apparatus under acid rain stress.  相似文献

Cytochromes are important components of photosynthetic electron transport chain. Here we report on genetic transformation of Cytochrome c6 (UfCyt c6) gene from Ulva fasciata Delile in tobacco for enhanced photosynthesis and growth. UfCyt c6 cDNA had an open reading frame of 330 bp encoding a polypeptide of 109 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 11.65 kDa and an isoelectric point of 5.21. UfCyt c6 gene along with a tobacco petE transit peptide sequence under control of CaMV35S promoter was transformed in tobacco through Agrobacterium mediated genetic transformation. Transgenic tobacco grew normal and exhibited enhanced growth as compared to wild type (WT) and vector control (VC) tobacco. Transgenic tobacco had higher contents of photosynthetic pigments and better ratios of photosynthetic pigments. The tobacco expressing UfCyt c6 gene exhibited higher photosynthetic rate and improved water use efficiency. Further activity of the water-splitting complex, photosystem II quantum yield, photochemical quenching, electron transfer rate, and photosynthetic yield were found comparatively higher in transgenic tobacco as compared to WT and VC tobacco. Alternatively basal quantum yield of non-photochemical processes in PSII and non-photochemical quenching were estimated lower in tobacco expressing UfCyt c6 gene. As a result of improved photosynthetic performance the transgenic tobacco had higher contents of sugar and starch, and exhibited comparatively better growth. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report on expression of UfCyt c6 gene from U. fasciata for improved photosynthesis and growth in tobacco.  相似文献

The finding of unique Chl d- and Chl f-containing cyanobacteria in the last decade was a discovery in the area of biology of oxygenic photosynthetic organisms. Chl b, Chl c, and Chl f are considered to be accessory pigments found in antennae systems of photosynthetic organisms. They absorb energy and transfer it to the photosynthetic reaction center (RC), but do not participate in electron transport by the photosynthetic electron transport chain. However, Chl d as well as Chl a can operate not only in the light-harvesting complex, but also in the photosynthetic RC. The long-wavelength (Qy) Chl d and Chl f absorption band is shifted to longer wavelength (to 750 nm) compared to Chl a, which suggests the possibility for oxygenic photosynthesis in this spectral range. Such expansion of the photosynthetically active light range is important for the survival of cyanobacteria when the intensity of light not exceeding 700 nm is attenuated due to absorption by Chl a and other pigments. At the same time, energy storage efficiency in photosystem 2 for cyanobacteria containing Chl d and Chl f is not lower than that of cyanobacteria containing Chl a. Despite great interest in these unique chlorophylls, many questions related to functioning of such pigments in primary photosynthetic processes are still not elucidated. This review describes the latest advances in the field of Chl d and Chl f research and their role in primary photosynthetic processes of cyanobacteria.  相似文献

In this study, we have compared the photosynthetic characteristics of two contrasting species of Tradescantia plants, T. fluminensis (shade-tolerant species), and T. sillamontana (light-resistant species), grown under the low light (LL, 50–125 µmol photons m?2 s?1) or high light (HL, 875–1000 µmol photons m?2 s?1) conditions during their entire growth period. For monitoring the functional state of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA), we measured chlorophyll (Chl) a emission fluorescence spectra and kinetics of light-induced changes in the heights of fluorescence peaks at 685 and 740 nm (F 685 and F 740). We also compared the light-induced oxidation of P700 and assayed the composition of carotenoids in Tradescantia leaves grown under the LL and HL conditions. The analyses of slow induction of Chl a fluorescence (SIF) uncovered different traits in the LL- and HL-grown plants of ecologically contrasting Tradescantia species, which may have potential ecophysiological significance with respect to their tolerance to HL stress. The fluorometry and EPR studies of induction events in chloroplasts in situ demonstrated that acclimation of both Tradescantia species to HL conditions promoted faster responses of their PSA as compared to LL-grown plants. Acclimation of both species to HL also caused marked changes in the leaf anatomy and carotenoid composition (an increase in Violaxanthin?+?Antheraxantin?+?Zeaxanthin and Lutein pools), suggesting enhanced photoprotective capacity of the carotenoids in the plants grown in nature under high irradiance. Collectively, the results of the present work suggest that the mechanisms of long-term PSA photoprotection in Tradescantia are based predominantly on the light-induced remodeling of pigment-protein complexes in chloroplasts.  相似文献

Reports indicate that Annona emarginata is tolerant to drought and is also used as an alternative rootstock for atemoya under drought conditions. The photosynthetic process can be adjusted after rehydration, resulting on total or partial recovery. The aim of this study was to determine if A. emarginata shows adjusts in gas exchange and the chlorophyll a fluorescence pattern after rehydration. During water deficits, the gas exchange and water content in the leaf decreased. However, after 5 days of rehydration, the water content in the leaf recovered and rehydrated plants presented the water use efficiency better than irrigated plants. Further remaining gas exchange parameters were lower in relation to irrigated plants. In chlorophyll a fluorescence, the rehydrated plants showed higher dissipation of light energy as heat, maintaining high activity of photoprotection. After rehydration, A. emarginata shows a positive correlation between transpiration and CO2 assimilation rate, which optimize the water use efficiency. Thus, A. emarginata presents adjustments in gas exchange and photochemical process, resulting on a possible long-term photosynthetic acclimation to water deficiency.  相似文献

Vegetation in grasslands is changing at an unprecedented rate. In the Nebraska Sandhills, this shift is attributed in part to encroachment of the woody species Juniperus virginiana. We investigated changes in resource availability and their feedback on seasonal trends in photosynthetic characteristics of J. virginiana trees scattered in open grasslands vs. a dense 57-year-old stand. Dense stand exhibited lower volumetric soil water content, NH4 +, NO3 , and δ13C, as well as foliage δ13C, δ15N, and N content, compared to grasslands. Water potential was higher in trees in grasslands compared to dense stand. J. virginiana in dense stand exhibited similar trends to trees in grasslands for net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance, transpiration, maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII, maximum carboxylation velocity, and maximum rate of electron transport. P N peaked early summer and declined in the fall, with trees in open grasslands lagging behind those in dense stand. Plasticity of this species may place it at a competitive advantage in the Sandhills, further altering grasslands vegetation and ecosystem processes.  相似文献

Guadua amplexifolia and Guadua angustifolia are the most promising timber substitutes amongst American bamboos due to their outstanding dimensions and structural properties. Despite the commercial potential of these species, there are few studies on the survival and adaptability of juveniles in plantations. The present study dealt with survival, growth, and ecophysiological response of juvenile clonal plants of these species, cultivated in abandoned pastures in Mérida, Venezuela. Survivorship, growth (height and culm diameter), and ecophysiological parameters were monitored the first year during wet and dry seasons. Survival rates were high in both species (95% in G. amplexifolia and 89% in G. angustifolia). Midday leaf water potentials decreased in both species during dry months (–1.28 to–2.72 MPa in G. amplexifolia and–1.67 to–2.37 MPa in G. angustifolia, respectively). Net photosynthetic rates measured during wet [16.57 ± 1.40 and 13.68 ± 2.40 μmol(CO2) m–2 s–1, respectively] and dry seasons [12.19 ± 2.82 and 8.12 ± 1.81 μmol(CO2) m–2 s–1, respectively], demonstrated that G. amplexifolia maintained consistently higher photosynthetic rates compared to G. angustifolia, which could explain the higher growth rates of the former. Similar trends were observed for stomatal conductance, transpiration, water-use efficiency, electron transport rate, and photochemical quenching of PSII. G. angustifolia maintained higher nonphotochemical quenching as well as a higher consumption of electrons per molecule of CO2 fixed, indicating a lower photosynthetic efficiency. The maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (0.73–0.76) suggested that neither of these species suffered from photoinhibition, despite persistently high radiation and air temperatures at the study site.  相似文献

CHX had remarkable inhibition on P. edulis photosynthesis, and the reflectance indexes and F 685 / F 735 had the potential value for quantifying the effects of antibiotics on trees.

Abstract

To reveal the effects of antibiotics on photosynthesis and provide help for remote sensing the influence of antibiotics on trees, we investigated the effects of cycloheximide (CHX) on Phyllostachys edulis. In CHX treatment, the photosynthetic pigment content in P. edulis was decreased markedly, which led to the increase in the reflectance spectra in visible region. CHX reduced the donor side and acceptor side of photosystem II (PSII), density of reaction centers, quantum production and electron transport in PSII, and raised the dissipation of absorbed light energy. Besides the dissipation, the absorbed light energy can be emitted as fluorescence with two main peaks in the red (685 nm) and far-red (735 nm) region, respectively. In 0.50 mM CHX treatment, a significant decline in the height and area of the peak at 685 nm might result from Chl loss reducing the light absorption and lower photochemical reaction in PSII. When fourth derivative analysis of fluorescence emission spectra was performed, the changes of the peaks at 718, 735 and 750 nm might result from the decline of absorbed solar radiation caused by the reduced pigment content and/or the damages to the PSI. In CHX treatment, a remarkable increase in intercellular CO2 concentrations and light compensation point and decrease in light saturation point demonstrated that the CO2 assimilation ability was decreased. Those results suggested that the photosynthesis in trees can be reduced after they were watered with wastewater containing CHX. The reflectance indexes and F 685/F 735 (H 685/H 735 and A 685/A 735) were markedly affected by CHX, demonstrating that they had the potential value for quantifying the effects of antibiotics on trees.

Under CO2-limited conditions such as during stomatal closure, photorespiration is suggested to act as a sink for excess light energy and protect photosystem I (PSI) by oxidizing its reaction center chlorophyll P700. In this study, this issue was directly examined with rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants via genetic manipulation of the amount of Rubisco, which can be a limiting factor for photorespiration. At low [CO2] of 5 Pa that mimicked stomatal closure condition, the activity of photorespiration in transgenic plants with decreased Rubisco content (RBCS-antisense plants) markedly decreased, whereas the activity in transgenic plants with overproduction of Rubisco (RBCS-sense plants) was similar to that in wild-type plants. Oxidation of P700 was enhanced at [CO2] of 5 Pa in wild-type and RBCS-sense plants. PSI was not damaged by excess light stress induced by repetitive saturated pulse-light (rSP) in the presence of strong steady-state light. On the other hand, P700 was strongly reduced in RBCS-antisense plants at [CO2] of 5 Pa. PSI was also damaged by rSP illumination. These results indicate that oxidation of P700 and the robustness of PSI against excess light stress are hampered by the decreased activity of photorespiration as a result of genetic manipulation of Rubisco content. It is also suggested that overproduction of Rubisco does not enhance photorespiration as well as CO2 assimilation probably due to partial deactivation of Rubisco.  相似文献

Background and aims

Nitrogen (N) deficiency and drought are two key limiting factors for rice production worldwide, but the relationship of drought stress with N homeostasis in rice is rarely advanced. The aim of this study was to dissect the physiological effects of drought stress on rice growth that coupled unbalanced N metabolism.

Results

Water-deficient stress (WD) limited stomatal aperture function and activity of Rubisco carboxylase to photosynthesis. The rate of total electron transport (Jt) and the electron to carboxylation (Jc) were considerably decreased, whereas the proportion of e? flow to photorespiration was stimulated by WD, especially at 1600 μmol m?2 s?1 PPFD. Concurrently, the expressions of glycolate oxidase genes (GOX1, GOX5) and glycine decarboxylase complex (GDCH, GDCP and GDCT) were significantly induced in leaves of WD treatment, which led to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in leaves. With the photosynthetic change, nitrate uptake and reduction were suppressed. Moreover, the enhanced photorespiration generated excess NH3 accumulation in leaves and stimulated the expressions of GS1;1, GS1;2 and GS2, which were tightly coupled with the expressions of PEPC1 and PEPC2 under WD stress.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that the inhibited nitrate reduction associated with diminished electron transport rate, and the photorespiration-associated accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and NH3 were critical in the drought-induced rice growth inhibition.

Variations in leaf gas-exchange characteristics, PSII activity, leaf pigments, and tuber yield were investigated in seven wild and one cultivated species of Dioscorea from Koraput, India, in order to find out their overall adaptability to the environment. The leaf photosynthetic rate, transpiration, stomatal conductance, water-use efficiency, carboxylation efficiency, and photosynthetic pigments were significantly higher in some wild species compared to the cultivated species. In addition, some wild species showed better photochemical efficiency of PSII, photochemical quenching, and electron transport rate in comparison to cultivated one. Furthermore, leaf dry matter accumulation and tuber yield was also higher in some wild species compared to the cultivated species. Taken together, the wild species, such as D. oppositifolia, D. hamiltonii, and D. pubera, showed the superior photosynthetic efficiency compared to the cultivated D. alata and they could be used for future crop improvement programs.  相似文献

Stomatal regulation involves beneficial effects of pruning mulch and irrigation on leaf photosynthesis in Prunus yedoensis and Ginkgo biloba under moderate drought. G. biloba showed conservative water use under drought.

Abstract

Leaf photosynthesis is highly sensitive to soil water stress via stomatal and/or biochemical responses, which markedly suppress the growth of landscape trees. Effective irrigation management to maintain leaf photosynthesis and information on species-specific photosynthetic responses to soil water stress are essential for the sustainable management of landscape trees in Japan, in which summer drought often occurs. In order to investigate effective irrigation management, we used plants with moderate soil water stress as controls, and examined the effects of daily irrigation and pruning mulch on leaf photosynthesis in container-grown Ginkgo biloba and Prunus yedoensis, which are the first and second main tall roadside trees in Japan. Stomatal conductance was significantly increased by pruning mulch and daily irrigation, with similar increases in leaf photosynthesis being observed in P. yedoensis and G. biloba. In order to obtain information on species-specific photosynthetic responses to soil water stress, we compared the responses of leaf photosynthesis and leaf water status to reductions in soil water content (SWC) between the two species. G. biloba maintained a constant leaf water potential, leaf water content, maximum carboxylation rate, and electron transport rate with reductions in SWC, whereas reductions were observed in P. yedoensis. We concluded that pruning mulch and irrigation effectively offset the negative impact of moderate water stress on leaf photosynthesis in summer in P. yedoensis and G. biloba via stomatal regulation, and also that G. biloba maintained its photosynthetic biochemistry and leaf water status better than P. yedoensis under severe water stress.

Although maize (Zea mays L.) plants utilize light efficiently, the expression of high light-efficient genes and stomatal factors is regulated by light conditions and affects photosynthesis of plants. In this study, we investigated the effects of different light qualities on the expression of the photosynthetic genes, such as pep1, pdk1, ZmSTOMAGEN, and psad1, and on stomatal function in maize seedlings. For both maize genotypes, Zhengdan 958 and Xianyu 335, light with wavelengths shorter than 490 nm enhanced the expression of pdk1 and ZmSTOMAGEN, whereas the expression of pdk1 positively correlated with ZmSTOMAGEN. Light with wavelengths longer than 630 nm or shorter than 490 nm (band pass filter) increased the expression of pep1 and psad1. Although the expression of four genes in Zhengdan 958 was significantly higher than that of Xianyu 335, changes in the expression of ZmSTOMAGEN, pdk1, or pep1 exerted no significant influence on stomatal function and photosynthetic rate. Our results suggest that light with wavelengths shorter than 490 nm promoted the expression of stomatal proteins and pdk1, facilitated the absorption of inorganic elements, and contributed to stomatal function in photosynthesis. Meanwhile, light with wavelengths longer than 630 nm inhibited the expression of pep1 and pdk1. Light with wavelengths longer than 630 nm or shorter than 490 nm promoted the expression of pep1, pdk1, and psad1.  相似文献
