Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) yields are impacted by overall photosynthetic production. Factors that influence crop photosynthesis are the plants genetic makeup and the environmental conditions. This study investigated cultivar variation in photosynthesis in the field conditions under both ambient and higher temperature. Six diverse cotton cultivars were grown in the field at Stoneville, MS under both an ambient and a high temperature regime during the 2006–2008 growing seasons. Mid-season leaf net photosynthetic rates (PN) and dark-adapted chlorophyll fluorescence variable to maximal ratios (Fv/Fm) were determined on two leaves per plot. Temperature regimes did not have a significant effect on either PN or Fv/Fm. In 2006, however, there was a significant cultivar × temperature interaction for PN caused by PeeDee 3 having a lower PN under the high temperature regime. Other cultivars’ PN were not affected by temperature. FM 800BR cultivar consistently had a higher PN across the years of the study. Despite demonstrating a higher leaf Fv/Fm, ST 5599BR exhibited a lower PN than the other cultivars. Although genetic variability was detected in photosynthesis and heat tolerance, the differences found were probably too small and inconsistent to be useful for a breeding program.  相似文献

Water availability is the main factor limiting crop growth and productivity in dry regions. This study was carried out in order to determine the effect of spraying methanol solution on the photosynthetic characteristics of bean plants. The main aim of our experiment was to improve plant performance under stress caused by water shortage. Two factors were involved: water-deficit stress, such as severe stress (25% of field capacity), mild stress (75% of field capacity), and no stress (100% of field capacity), and application of methanol solution spray at four concentrations: control (without spraying), 10, 20, and 30%. Methanol was applied three times at different growth stages (seedling, flowering, and podding stage) in 10-d intervals. The treatment with 20% methanol at the seedling stage resulted in increased net photosynthesis (PN), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), and decreased transpiration rate (E) under no stress and mild stress conditions. Under severe stress, 10 and 20%-methanol treatments resulted in increased Ci, maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, and decreased E. At the flowering stage, methanol treatments resulted in decreased E and increased Ci under mild and severe stress. At the podding stage, 10 and 20%-methanol treatments resulted in increased PN, Ci, and total chlorophyll content under mild stress. In conclusion, we suggested that foliar application of methanol had a positive role in enhancing photosynthetic performance.  相似文献

Improvement of photosynthetic traits is a promising strategy to break the yield potential barrier of major food crops. Leaf photosynthetic traits were evaluated in a set of high yielding Oryza sativa, cv. Swarna?×?Oryza nivara backcross introgression lines (BILs) along with recurrent parent Swarna, both in wet (Kharif) and dry (Rabi) seasons in normal irrigated field conditions. Net photosynthesis (PN) ranged from 15.37 to 23.25 µmol (CO2) m?2 s?1 in the BILs. Significant difference in PN was observed across the seasons and genotypes. Six BILs showed high photosynthesis compared with recurrent parent in both seasons. Chlorophyll content showed minimum variation across the seasons for any specific BIL but significant variation was observed among BILs. Significant positive association between photosynthetic traits and yield traits was observed, but this association was not consistent across seasons mainly due to contrasting weather parameters in both seasons. BILs 166s and 248s with high and consistent photosynthetic rate exhibited stable high yield levels in both the seasons compared to the recurrent parent Swarna. There is scope to exploit photosynthetic efficiency of wild and weedy rice to identify genes for improvement of photosynthetic rate in cultivars.  相似文献

Anthropogenic activities are changing global precipitation regimes and result in many middle latitude arid and semiarid regions experiencing less precipitation and more extreme weather events. However, little is known about the response of active ingredient accumulation in the medicinal herb Plantago depressa Willd. Therefore, we carried out a greenhouse experiment in order to study effect of control (CK, normal water supply equal to 309 mm per four months), -30 (-WS) and +30% (+WS) of the control water supply on the photosynthesis (PN), C/N ratio, and plantamajoside accumulation in P. depressa. Our results showed that compared with the–WS and CK treatments, the +WS treatment significantly enhanced biomass, the C/N ratio, plantamajoside concentration, yield in shoots and roots, and PN, but declined the N concentration in shoots and roots. The plantamajoside concentration was positively correlated with PN, the soluble sugar content, and the C/N ratio, but negatively correlated with the N concentration. Our results suggested that, under experimental conditions, +WS increased the C/N ratio and promoted the plantamajoside accumulation of P. depressa.  相似文献

To evaluate utility of different salt-tolerant lines, three soybean lines with different resistance to salt were planted in the field under control and salt-stress conditions for two years. The results showed that net photosynthetic rate (PN) was significantly different among lines at the anthesis stage and decreased on average by 13.6-34.1% under conditions of salt stress. The stomatal conductance was a primary limiting factor for the reduction of PN under salt stress. Meanwhile, the grain yield (GY) decreased on average by 14.0-35.3% among lines under salt stress. The salt-tolerant lines S111-9 and S113-6 showed higher PN and GY under salt stress in comparison with the salt-sensitive cultivar Melrose. Regression analysis indicated that there was extremely significantly positive correlation between GY and PN under field conditions. Therefore, PN might be used as a physiological index for field resistance of soybean to salt stress.  相似文献

Changes in photosynthetic attributes related to genetic improvement of cotton yield were studied in seven Chinese cotton cultivars widely grown in Xinjiang during the past 30 years. Our results showed that a chlorophyll (Chl) content and net photosynthetic rate (P N) of the 1980s cultivar was the highest among all after 60 days from planting (DAP). However, after 75 DAP, the Chl content, P N, and actual photochemical efficiency of PSII of the old cultivars declined gradually, whereas those of the new cultivars remained relatively high. Compared to the old cultivars, leaves of the new cultivars endured a longer period and their senescence was slower, shoot and boll dry mass was higher, but the root to shoot ratio was lower. The lint yield of the 2000s cultivars was 14.7 and 21.4% higher than that of 1990s and 1980s cultivars, respectively. The high yield of the new cultivars was attributed to a greater number of bolls per unit of area with high lint percentage. We suggested that the improved photosynthetic capacity and the increased ability to deliver photosynthates to reproductive sites during the peak boll-setting stage to boll-opening stage were the key physiological basis in the evolution process of cotton cultivars from 1980s to 2000s for the cotton yield improvement within a short growing period.  相似文献

We investigated net photosynthetic rate (PN) of ear and two uppermost (flag and penultimate) leaves of wheat cultivars Hongmangmai (drought resistant) and Haruhikari (drought sensitive) during post-anthesis under irrigated and non-irrigated field conditions. The PNof ear and flag leaf were significantly higher and less affected by drought in Hongmangmai than in Haruhikari. The rate of reduction in stomatal conductance (gs) was similar for the two cultivars, but intercellular CO2concentration (Ci) in the flag leaf of Hongmangmai was lower than that of Haruhikari in non-irrigated treatment. No differences were observed in leaf water potential (ψ1) and osmotic adjustment of the flag leaf of the cultivars. These results imply that differences in photosynthetic inhibition on the flag leaf at low leaf ψ1between the cultivars were primarily due to non-stomatal effects. Hence the main physiological factor associated with yield stability of Hongmangmai under drought stress may be attributed to the capacity for chloroplast activity in the flag leaf, which apparently allows sustained PNof flag leaf during grain filling under drought stress. The higher PNof ear in Hongmangmai under drought could also be related to its drought resistance.  相似文献

The influence of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) supply on biomass, leaf area, photon saturated photosynthetic rate (Pmax), quantum yield efficiency (α), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), and carboxylation efficiency (CE) was investigated in Vicia faba. The influence of P on N accumulation, biomass, and leaf area production was also investigated. An increase in P supply was consistently associated with an increase in N accumulation and N productivity in terms of biomass and leaf area production. Furthermore, P increased the photosynthetic N use efficiency (NUE) in terms of Pmax and α. An increase in P supply was also associated with an increase in CE and a decrease in Ci. Under variable daily meteorological conditions specific leaf nitrogen content (NL), specific leaf phosphorus content (PL), specific leaf area (δL), root mass fraction (Rf), Pmax, and α remained constant for a given N and P supply. A monotonic decline in the steady-state value of Rf occurred with increasing N supply. δL increased with increasing N supply or with increasing NL. We tested also the hypothesis that P supply positively affects both N demand and photosynthetic NUE by influencing the upper limit of the asymptotic values for Pmax and CE, and the lower limit for Ci in response to increasing N.  相似文献

Shallow ponds with rapidly photosynthesising cyanobacteria or eukaryotic algae are used for growing biotechnology feedstock and have been proposed for biofuel production but a credible model to predict the productivity of a column of phytoplankton in such ponds is lacking. Oxygen electrodes and Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) fluorometer technology were used to measure gross photosynthesis (P G) vs. irradiance (E) curves (P G vs. E curves) in Chlorella (chlorophyta), Dunaliella salina (chlorophyta) and Phaeodactylum (bacillariophyta). P G vs. E curves were fitted to the waiting-in-line function [P G = (P Gmax × E/Eopt) × exp(1 — E/Eopt)]. Attenuation of incident light with depth could then be used to model P G vs. E curves to describe P G vs. depth in pond cultures of uniformly distributed planktonic algae. Respiratory data (by O2-electrode) allowed net photosynthesis (P N) of algal ponds to be modelled with depth. Photoinhibition of photosynthesis at the pond surface reduced P N of the water column. Calculated optimum depths for the algal ponds were: Phaeodactylum, 63 mm; Dunaliella, 71 mm and Chlorella, 87 mm. Irradiance at this depth is ≈ 5 to 10 μmol m?2 s?1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). This knowledge can then be used to optimise the pond depth. The total net P N [μmol(O2) m?2 s?1] were: Chlorella, ≈ 12.6 ± 0.76; Dunaliella, ≈ 6.5 ± 0.41; Phaeodactylum ≈ 6.1 ± 0.35. Snell’s and Fresnel’s laws were used to correct irradiance for reflection and refraction and thus estimate the time course of P N over the course of a day taking into account respiration during the day and at night. The optimum P N of a pond adjusted to be of optimal depth (0.1–0.5 m) should be approximately constant because increasing the cell density will proportionally reduce the optimum depth of the pond and vice versa. Net photosynthesis for an optimised pond located at the tropic of Cancer would be [in t(C) ha?1 y?1]: Chlorella, ≈ 14.1 ± 0.66; Dunaliella, ≈ 5.48 ± 0.39; Phaeodactylum, ≈ 6.58 ± 0.42 but such calculations do not take weather, such as cloud cover, and temperature, into account.  相似文献

Water availability is an important factor for plant growth in arid environments. In recent decades, vermicompost (VC) fertilizer has been used in agriculture as a safe and effective fertilizer with high water-holding capacity. The aim of the present study was to characterize effects of VC fertilizer on photosynthetic activity of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L. cv. Karaj) under drought conditions at three different growth stages. Tests were carried out with four volumetric ratios of VC to soil, i.e., 0:100, 10:90, 20:80, and 30:70, and three levels of drought stress, i.e., no stress (NS), moderate drought (MS), and severe drought (SS) (100, 75, and 25% of field capacity, respectively). Evaluations were performed at the seedling, flowering, and podding stage. We found that the VC treatment under NS conditions significantly increased total chlorophyll content [Chl (a+b)], intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), and maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm) at all three stages. The VC addition of 10 and 20% significantly enhanced the Chl content and Fv/Fm under MS and Fv/Fm, Ci, and PN under SS at the flowering stage. In conclusion, our results proved a positive effect of the VC fertilizer on photosynthesis of chickpea under NS conditions, but it was not found under MS and SS.  相似文献

The study of leaf vascular systems is important in order to understand the fluid dynamics of water movement in leaves. Recent studies have shown how these systems can be involved in the performance of photosynthesis, which is linked to the density of the vascular network per unit of leaf area. The aim of the present study was to highlight the correlation between a leaf vein density (VD) and net photosynthetic rate (PN), which was undertaken using a digital camera, a stereoscopic microscope, and a light source. The proposed hypothesis was tested, for the first time, on the leaves of two cultivars of Vitis vinifera (L.). A significant difference was found between the VD of mature leaves of the two cultivars. VD was also significantly correlated with the maximum leaf PN. These findings support the hypothesis that the vascular system of grape leaves can be correlated with leaf photosynthesis performance.  相似文献

Glyphosate herbicide caused oxidative stress and exhibited negative effects on photosynthesis and gas exchange of peanut [Arachis hypogaea L. cv. Giza (G) 5 and 6] leaves. We demonstrated that glyphosate caused various morphological symptoms, such as chlorosis, yellowing, and appearance of curly edges in leaves treated with high doses of herbicide in both cultivars; however, the G5 cultivar was more sensitive and showed severer symptoms. Glyphosate lowered photosynthesis and reduced contents of pigments and proteins as well as free amino acids in both cultivars. The gas-exchange parameters, such as photosynthetic (PN) and transpiration rate (E), were highly altered by the glyphosate application. For example, PN and E were reduced by 65 and 61%, respectively, in G5 treated with high dose of glyphosate compared with control. Antioxidant enzymes, such as peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase were induced by both low and high concentrations in the glyphosate-treated leaves. Moreover, the level of lipid peroxidation, indicated by a malondialdehyde content, as well as the hydrogen peroxide content increased in the glyphosate-treated leaves. However, an increase in total antioxidant activity was detected in leaves and this reflected changes in the antioxidant status and accumulation of antioxidants as a defense mechanism against glyphosate toxicity in peanut.  相似文献

The altitudinal effects on photosynthesis were measured on progenies of three populations of Rosa platyacantha Schrenk from altitudes of 1,170 (L); 1,580 (M); and 1,920 (H) m a. s. l. During the day, net photosynthetic rate (PN) decreased in all populations due to the high air temperature in the summer. The H population showed a significantly lower PN at noon compared to other populations. The midday depression of PN occurred in L and M populations due to stomatal limitations, while PN inhibition was associated with PSII activity decline in the H population. In order to avoid photodamage, the plants of H population triggered active antioxidant defenses with a higher enzyme activity and redox ratio of ascorbate at midday compared to the L and M populations. However, more oxidative injury still occurred in the H plants at noon due to higher lipid peroxidation. Our results indicated that the provenance significantly affected photosynthesis in R. platyacantha from northwestern China.  相似文献

Ozone (O3) is important air pollutant inducing severe losses of horticultural production. Cultivars of the same species, but with different leaf colors, may differ in their ozone sensitivity. However, it has not been clarified yet if different leaf coloration influences such a sensitivity. In this study, two purple-leafed and two green-leafed cultivars of Pakchoi were selected for ozone fumigation (240 ± 20 nmol mol–1, 09:00–16:00 h). Elevated O3 decreased chlorophyll content, increased anthocyanin (Ant) content, damaged cell membrane integrity, enhanced antioxidative enzyme activities, depressed photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s), inhibited maximal quantum yield (Fv/Fm) and effective quantum yield [YII] of PSII photochemistry, and caused visible injury. Purple-leafed cultivars with higher Ant contents were more tolerant than green-leafed cultivars as indicated by lower relative enhancement in malondialdehyde content and lower relative losses in P N, g s, Fv/Fm, and YII. The higher ability to synthesize Ant in the purple-leafed cultivars contributed to their higher photoprotective ability.  相似文献

Though mulberry (Morus alba) tree shows great adaptations to various climate conditions, their leaf water status and photosynthesis are sensitive to climate changes. In the current study, seven widely planted mulberry cultivars in Chongqing, Southwest China, were selected to analyze leaf cuticular wax characteristics, gas exchange index, post-harvest leaf water status and their relationships, aiming to provide new theory in screening high resistant mulberry cultivars. Mulberry trees formed rounded cap-type idioblasts on the adaxial leaf surface. Film-like waxes and granule-type wax crystals covered leaf surfaces, varying in crystal density among cultivars. The stomatal aperture on the abaxial surface of cultivars with high wax amount was smaller than that of cultivars with low wax amount. The amount of total wax was negatively correlated with the net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E) and stomatal conductance (g s) and positively correlated with the moisture retention capacity. It suggested that both cuticular wax and stomatal factor might be involved in regulating water loss in mulberry leaves under field conditions. The variability in moisture retention capacity and cuticular wax characteristics might be important in evaluating and screening mulberry cultivars for increasing silk quality and silkworm productivity.  相似文献

C3 photosynthesis at high light is often modeled by assuming limitation by the maximum capacity of Rubisco carboxylation (VCmax) at low CO2 concentrations, by electron transport capacity (Jmax) at higher CO2 concentrations, and sometimes by triose-phosphate utilization rate at the highest CO2 concentrations. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) at lower light is often modeled simply by assuming that it becomes limited by electron transport (J). However, it is known that Rubisco can become deactivated at less than saturating light, and it is possible that PN at low light could be limited by the rate of Rubisco carboxylation (VC) rather than J. This could have important consequences for responses of PN to CO2 and temperature at low light. In this work, PN responses to CO2 concentration of common bean, quinoa, and soybean leaves measured over a wide range of temperatures and PPFDs were compared with rates modeled assuming either VC or J limitation at limiting light. In all cases, observed rates of PN were better predicted by assuming limitation by VC rather than J at limiting light both below and above the current ambient CO2. One manifestation of this plant response was that the relative stimulation of PN with increasing the ambient CO2 concentration from 380 to 570 µmol mol–1 did not decrease at less than saturating PPFDs. The ratio of VC to VCmax at each lower PPFD varied linearly with the ratio of PN at low PPFD to PN at high PPFD measured at 380 µmol(CO2) mol–1 in all cases. This modification of the standard C3 biochemical model was much better at reproducing observed responses of light-limited PN to CO2 concentrations from pre-industrial to projected future atmospheric concentrations.  相似文献

Pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) has a high tolerance to drought and soil salinity. Although adult pistachio trees are well known to be drought tolerant, the studies on physiological adaptation of pistachio cultivars to drought are limited. Therefore, three pistachio cultivars, i.e., Akbari, Kaleghochi, and Ohadi were subjected to three osmotic drought stress treatments: control (?0.1 MPa), moderate (?0.75 MPa) and severe drought (?1.5 MPa) stress using PEG 6000 for a 14-day period. All drought stress treatments decreased net photosynthesis (P n), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), and transpiration rate (E), but Ohadi maintained better its photosynthetic capacity compared to Akbari and Kaleghochi. Maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (F v /F m), effective PSII quantum yield (ΦPSII) and photochemical quenching (qP) were also reduced. The chlorophyll fluorescence parameters indicated that Akbari was more susceptible to the applied drought stress. Drought stress levels decreased chlorophyll pigments, fresh weight, stem elongation, leaf nitrogen content (N), leaf water potential and increased water use efficiency (WUE). Proline increased strongly under drought stress for Akbari. After 2 weeks of stress a recovery of 2 weeks was applied. This period was insufficient to fully restore the negative effects of the applied stress on the studied cultivars. Based on the reduction of photosynthesis and the increase of the proline content Akbari seems more sensitive to the applied drought stress.  相似文献

The photosynthesis was investigated 30 d after Pb treatment in Myrica rubra seedlings. The Pb treatment resulted in significantly increased Pb concentrations in shoots. Low Pb concentration exposure (≤2 mM) reduced the net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (gs) without affecting the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), chlorophyll (Chl) content, and Chl fluorescence parameters. At 10 d after severe Pb treatment (≥4 mM), PN was inhibited and accompanied by Chl damage, while at 30 d, the inhibition of PN was followed by an increase of Ci and a decrease of gs, E, Chl content, and Chl fluorescence parameters. M. rubra showed a promising prospect for use in the soil phytoremediation, when Pb concentration is low, but the remediation efficiency of M. rubra is limited if Pb exceeds 2 mM.  相似文献
