Integrative ecophysiological and vegetative responses of Dryas octopetala were measured in response to field perturbations of temperature, precipitation and their interactions in a polar semi-desert in Svalbard, Norway (79°N, 12°E). Leaf carbon isotope discrimination (), total leaf nitrogen concentration and leaf development were determined for photosynthetic leaves collected during the last week of August 1991, after one season of manipulations. Individual leaf weight and the total mass of leaf tissue were significantly lower when water was added, irrespective of temperature regime. avalues (the ratio of CO2 concentration in leaf intercellular spaces to that in the atmosphere) were significantly higher under all three field manipulation treatments, and was significantly reduced when Dryas was grown under drought conditions in a related greenhouse study. Nitrogen concentrations of plants from the field experiment were significantly lower under warmed conditions regardless of water regime. Our results indicate that changes in environmental conditions in high arctic settings will result in alterations of Dryas leaf gas exchange, as expressed by increases in carbon isotope discrimination, which may be accompanied by shifts in leaf nitrogen content and leaf biomass. 相似文献

? Premise of the study: Average arctic temperatures have increased at almost twice the global average in the past 100 years. Most studies on biodiversity along latitudinal gradients have focused on species richness or genetic diversity at lower latitudes, and only a few studies have inferred genetic diversity within a species along a latitudinal gradient at higher latitudes, even though these areas might be most affected by recent climate changes. Here, intraspecific genetic diversity of the arctic-alpine Dryas octopetala (Rosaceae) is studied along a latitudinal gradient to test the hypotheses that genetic diversity decreases and vegetative clonal growth increases with latitude. ? Methods: Ten microsatellite markers have been developed for D. octopetala and analyzed with population genetic methods in five populations along a latitudinal transect spanning from 59.0°N to 79.9°N. ? Key results: The nine microsatellites that were used in the final analyses resulted in a resolution high enough to distinguish between ramets while providing useful information at a larger geographical scale. Three genetic clusters were indicated, a southern Norway group, a northern Norway group, and a Svalbard group, with corresponding decreasing genetic diversity. No trend was found with regard to clonality along the gradient. ? Conclusions: The newly developed microsatellite markers provide a useful tool for further genetic studies of D. octopetala and its close relatives, addressing population structure as well as phylogeographic patterns. The results of this study support the hypothesis of decreasing genetic diversity with increasing latitude, which may have implications for future adaptability to climate change. 相似文献

Opportunities exist in high Arctic polar semidesert communities for colonisation of unvegetated ground by long-lived clonal plants such as Dryas octopetala. This can be achieved by lateral spread of vegetative ramets, or by sexual reproduction and seedling recruitment. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine whether these two means of proliferation show differential sensitivity to contrasting components of the abiotic environment (temperature, soil nutrient and water availability) and (2) to evaluate the potential for D. octopetala to respond to climate change by an increase in cover and biomass in polar semi-desert communities. Factorial environmental manipulations of growing season temperature, soil nutrient and water status were conducted over 3 years at a polar semi-desert community in Svalbard, Norway (78°56.12N, 11°50.4E) and both clonal and sexual reproductive performance, together with instantaneous net photosynthesis (Pn), were recorded during the third season (1993). D. octopetala capitalised rapidly on an amelioration in the availability of inorganic nutrients (N, P and K) by an expansion in leaf area and biomass supported by increased Pn per unit leaf weight, and by apparent luxury uptake of nutrients (particularly P). Several facets of sexual reproductive development and seed viability were markedly improved by elevated temperatures or soil nutrient availability. Thus although D. octopetala is a long-lived clonal plant, with many traits characteristic of stress resistance syndrome, it showed considerable phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental manipulations. The results support the hypothesis that clonal growth confers survival potential during unfavourable years, together with the ability to capitalise on nutrient flushes and recycle nutrients internally. Continued investment in sexual reproduction ensures that seed setting is successful during favourable years, even if these occur infrequently. Cimate warming in the high Arctic could thus result in changes in the cover, biomass and the relative significance of clonal versus sexual proliferation of D. octopetala (and thus the genetic diversity of the population) but the long-term responses will probably be constrained by lack of available nutrients. 相似文献

The distribution of ectomycorrhizas on Dryas octopetala L in grass heaths of the 450 km2 karst region known as the Burren in Western Ireland was examined in relation to soil factors and vegetation type. Ectomycorrhizas were identified or characterised from 56 soil cores from 30 sites, and the occurrence of each ectomycorrhizal (EM) type was quantified by estimating the total length of mycorrhizal tips of each type. Soil organic matter, total nitrogen, extractable phosphorus, pH and depth were the soil factors determined. In total, 24 EM types were recorded. The EM community of Dryas roots was significantly more species-rich in one vegetation type—Hyperico-Dryadetum—than in others (Arctostaphylo-Dryadetum or Asperulo-Seslerietum). Multiple linear regression analyses indicated that soil organic matter and soil depth explained a significant portion of the variation in EM abundance, while soil organic matter and extractable phosphorus explained a significant portion of the variation in EM diversity. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that some individual EM types (e.g. Craterellus lutescens, Cenococcum geophilum, Tomentella sp., Boletus sp.) exhibited distinct soil preferences, most markedly in relation to soil organic matter, which, in this analysis, was the main significant soil variable distinguishing the three vegetation types. 相似文献

Proton excretion induced by optimal concentrations of indoleacetic acid (IAA) and fusicoccin (FC) differs not only in maximum rate of acidification but also in the lag before onset of H+ excretion and in sensitivity to cycloheximide. Because these differences might simply be a consequence of the difference in rate of proton excretion, FC and IAA have now been compared using oat coleoptiles (cv. Victory) under conditions where the rates of acidification are more similar, i.e. suboptimal FC versus optimal IAA. As the concentration of FC is reduced, the rate of H+ excretion decreases, the final equilibrium pH increases, and the lag before detectable acidification increases up to 7-fold. This enhanced lag period is not primarily a consequence of wall buffering, inasmuch as it persists when a low concentration of FC is added to sections which were already excreting H+ in response to IAA. An extended lag also occurs, upon reduction of FC levels, in the hyperpolarization of the membrane potential, before enhancement of O2 uptake and before the increased rate of Rb+ uptake. The presence or absence of a lag is not a distinguishing feature between FC and IAA actions on H+ excretion and cannot be used to discriminate between their sites of action. In contrast, the insensitivity of FC-induced H+ excretion to cycloheximide, as compared with the nearly complete inhibition of this auxin effect by cycloheximide, persists even at dilute concentrations of FC. This seems to be a basic difference in H+ excretion by IAA and FC. 相似文献

The composition, structure and temporal variation of ectomycorrhizal (EM) communities associated with mountain avens (Dryas octopetala) in grass heaths of the Burren, western Ireland were assessed by using soil core sampling in two permanent plots and 30 other sites (196 cores in total). Of the 34 different EM types observed, 11 were common and constituted over 80% of the EM biomass. Four EM types, Craterellus lutescens, Tomentella sp., Dryadirhiza fulgens and Cenococcum geophilum were the most abundant as measured by EM length and frequency of occurrence in cores. The species profile and relative abundances were very similar in cores from the permanent plots and different sites in the Burren, indicating that they were all representative of the same EM community. The below-ground EM community in both plots was compared with production of basidiomes, and the latter was found to be an unreliable indicator of EM community structure. Temporal variation in the EM community was assessed by repeated core sampling of the two permanent plots over a 14-month period (between March 1998 and May 1999). No statistically significant shifts in EM abundance were found between sampling dates, probably as a consequence of the large variation in EM abundance between core samples over the sampling period. No significant relationship was found between rainfall, soil moisture or soil temperature and fluctuations in EM abundance. Patterns of total EM abundance and fluctuations in EM diversity were strongly correlated between the two permanent plots over the sampling period. Temporal fluctuations in the dominant EM type, Craterellus lutescens, were similar in both plots with respect to mycorrhizal length, biomass and relative abundance, and the patterns between both plots were positively correlated. EM diversity was negatively correlated with biomass of ectomycorrhizas of Craterellus lutescens in both plots, but it was significant only in plot 1. 相似文献

To persist in the oral cavity, bacteria must be able to tolerate rapid and substantial environmental fluctuations, particularly in pH and nutrient source and availability. Various species of Streptococcus, one of the most abundant genera in the mouth, are associated with oral health, as well as with dental caries. Cariogenic streptococci depend on a biofilm lifestyle for survival and persistence in the oral cavity and have developed sophisticated mechanisms to cope with environmental stresses. Here, we analyze the primary factors that allow these bacteria to emerge as significant members of tooth biofilms during adverse conditions. Our focus is on the molecular mechanisms of biofilm formation, stress tolerance and sugar metabolism by pathogenic oral streptococci, mainly Streptococcus mutans. Overlaps in the roles and regulation of these virulence attributes are highlighted and areas of research that deserve further investigation are proposed. 相似文献

Responses to change in temperature and light intensity were studied in three species of Australian Odonata using time-lapse photography. In each species, responses to temperature are dependent on both the instantaneous temperature and the direction of temperature change. At temperatures below those which produce unstable colour phases, the change to dark phase takes about 9 hr and is constant in rate. The reverse change is directly temperature dependent and can be much more rapid. Responses to change in light intensity are attributable to the heating effect of light rather than to true light sensitivity. All colour changes show wide individual variation in both rate and amount. They are slightly affected by temperature acclimation but are unaffected by prevailing weather, time of year, geographic location, or age. 相似文献

The inception of ecological immunology has led to an increase in the number of studies investigating the impact of environmental stressors on host immune defence mechanisms. This in turn has led to an increased understanding of the importance of invertebrate groups for immunological research. This review discusses the advances made within marine invertebrate ecological immunology over the past decade. By demonstrating the environmental stressors tested, the immune parameters typically investigated, and the species that have received the greatest level of investigation, this review provides a critical assessment of the field of marine invertebrate ecological immunology. In highlighting the methodologies employed within this field, our current inability to understand the true ecological significance of any immune dysfunction caused by environmental stressors is outlined. Additionally, a number of examples are provided in which studies successfully demonstrate a measure of immunocompetence through alterations in disease resistance and organism survival to a realized pathogenic threat. Consequently, this review highlights the potential to advance our current understanding of the ecological and evolutionary significance of environmental stressor related immune dysfunction. Furthermore, the potential for the advancement of our understanding of the immune system of marine invertebrates, through the incorporation of newly emerging and novel molecular techniques, is emphasized. 相似文献

Abstract. Stomatal conductances ( g s ) were measured on the leaves of 3–4 year old Golden Delicious trees and of seedlings of two other cultivars. Measurements were made on container grown trees in the field with a diffusion porometer in 1975 and 1976, and in controlled conditions in a leaf chamber in the laboratory in 1976. Stomatal densities in the Golden Delicious leaves were assessed from scanning electron micrographs. Stomatal density on extension shoot leaves was higher than on other leaf types after June.
The response to irradiance shown by both the porometer and the leaf chamber results could be described by a rectangular hyperbola: where gmax is maximum conductance and β indicates the sensitivity of gs to photon influx density ( Q p ). The values of β were in the range 60–90 μmol m−2 s−1 .
There was no evidence that apple stomata are sensitive to temperature per se, but gs was reduced by increasing leaf to air vapour pressure deficits ( D ). There was a linear relationship between g s and D which was not attributable to feed-back to leaf water potential (ψL ) as the latter did not affect g s until a threshold of about −2.0 to −2.5 MPa was reached. 树干/枝呼吸是调控森林碳平衡的关键生理过程之一,其对环境变化的响应在很大程度上决定了森林生产力及其固碳增汇能力.本文主要综述了近10年来林木树干/枝呼吸对大气CO2浓度升高、温度升高、干旱胁迫和人为管理的响应及其生理生态学调控机制,结果表明:大气CO2浓度升高和升温一般促进树干/枝的呼吸,其表观温度敏感性(Q10值)受树种、测定方法、温度范围、季节、林龄和径阶的影响,但变幅小于根系呼吸Q10值的变幅;干旱胁迫时,树干/枝呼吸速率减缓,随后进行浇水则会引发树干/枝呼吸的剧增,其生理学机制仍不清楚;不同的管理措施(如火烧、施肥、灌溉、修枝、环割等)对树干/枝呼吸的影响不尽相同.综述以往研究,提出今后值得深入探讨的4个方向:(1)明确树干/枝呼吸释放CO2的来源和去向以及建立相应的测定标准;(2)了解树干/枝呼吸对环境变化响应的生物学机制;(3)探讨树干/枝呼吸对环境变化的适应性;(4)树干液流、同位素示踪和CO2微电极技术的综合应用. 相似文献

The genetic polymorphism of twelve enzyme systems in two parthenogenetic tetraploidArtemia populations from N. Greece has been studied, using starch gel electrophoresis. The genetic distance within and among the two Greek populations was calculated. The high degree of genetic identity between the populations indicates that they belong to the same species. Environmental stresses have adverse effects on plant growth and productivity, and are predicted to become more severe and
widespread in decades to come. Especially, prolonged and repeated severe stresses affecting growth and development would bring
down long-lasting effects in woody plants as a result of its long-term growth period. To counteract these effects, trees have
evolved specific mechanisms for acclimation and tolerance to environmental stresses. Plant growth and development are regulated
by the integration of many environmental and endogenous signals including plant hormones. Acclimation of land plants to environmental
stresses is controlled by molecular cascades, also involving cross-talk with other stresses and plant hormone signaling mechanisms.
This review focuses on recent studies on molecular mechanisms of abiotic stress responses in woody plants, functions of plant
hormones in wood formation, and the interconnection of cell wall biosynthesis and the mechanisms shown above. Understanding
of these mechanisms in depth should shed light on the factors for improvement of woody plants to overcome severe environmental

Summary Stomatal apertures of isolated and suitably conditioned epidermal strips of Polypodium vulgare are described as the stomata respond to the influences of temperature, air humidity, and water potential at the epidermal inner walls. Water stress as a result of reduced water potential in the substomatal airspace leads to narrower stomatal pores when water potential falls below -8 bar. Water potentials above this threshold value show minor influence. Stomatal responses to such water stress strongly interact with the responses to humidity changes in ambient air and to temperature. The linear dependence of stomatal apertures on the vapor saturation deficit of the air (closing) is shifted to lower values (more closed) by lower leaf bulk water potentials.Stomatal behavior depending on the temperature factor seems to be reversed by higher water stress. Without water stress, rising temperatures between 20 and 28° C are accompanied by further opening of the pores, whereas an increase of temperature within this range leads to narrowing of the stomata under the influence of lower water potentials within the substomatal airspace. It can be demonstrated that stomatal aperture values of Polypodium vulgare depending on temperature always describe optimum curves. With no water stress, closing does not occur before rather high temperatures are reached and above a broad range of maximal opening. Water stress, on the other hand, results in more pronounced narrowing of stomatal pores and shifts the onset to considerably lower temperatures. 相似文献

Summary Stomatal responses in isolated epidermis strips of the fern Polypodium vulgare to humidity and temperature were investigated. Movements were observed under a microscope, the epidermis being mounted in a climatized chamber above a water table, the gap between tissue and water being similar to that between epidermis and mesophyll in the intact leaf. Stomatal aperture increases as the water vapor deficit is decreased. The relationship is approximately linear until full aperture is reached. The speed of stomatal movement depends on the magnitude of the change in saturation deficit. Temperature also exerts a strong influence on stomatal aperture. Low temperature causes closure. Maximal opening occurs between about 20° C and 28° C. Higher temperature leads to a slight reduction in aperture. The temperature range corresponding to maximum apertures depends on the temperature that prevailed during cultivation of the plants. The data are used to construct three-dimensional graphs showing stomatal behavior under the simultaneous influence of temperature and humidity for plants of different precultivation. The possible mechanisms that lead to the observed stomatal reactions are discussed. 相似文献

Environmental enrichment devices are a potential way to enhance psychological well-being in laboratory animals. The effects of such devices need to be systematically evaluated before they are recommended for widespread use. The purpose of this research was to monitor the behavioural and physiological responses of adult female rhesus macaques to a simple enrichment device. The apparatus consisted of a box attached to the monkey's home cage that contained a radio and a food dispenser, which could be controlled by the monkeys via contact detectors. Radio and food dispenser use were automatically recorded. Whole blood serotonin (WBS), plasma cortisol and abnormal behaviour were measured in 5 monkeys before, during and after a 20-week period in which the monkey's cages were equipped with the device. All monkeys used the device (3 of the 5 subjects earned an average of more than 200 food pellets per day). Mean plasma cortisol and whole blood serotonin did not differ across sampling times, suggesting that the apparatus had no effect on basal stress levels. There was an inverse relationship between apparatus use and cortisol levels in 76% of the samples, but only 3 of 17 coefficients were significant. There was a significant but small negative correlation between apparatus use and self-abusive behaviour. This enrichment device was readily used by adult rhesus monkeys and could be adapted for use in a wide variety of laboratory settings. 相似文献

Climate variation can cause major changes in the marine food web. We analyzed over 24 years of ichthyoplankton data from the Gulf of Alaska to evaluate lower trophic level responses to environmental change and judge their usefulness as ecological indicators. We standardized abundance data for each of 77 ichthyoplankton taxa, and used the Bray-Curtis distance measure and Flexible Beta linkage method, which grouped them into 22 discrete clusters. Variance Partitioning Analysis stressed the importance of geographical and seasonal processes for ichthyoplankton dynamics, and helped us identify the specific region(s) and month(s) for each response variable (cluster abundance, diversity) in which annual variation was maximized. Response variables were linked to environmental explanatory variables (atmospheric pressure, temperature, salinity and circulation indices) by Canonical Correspondence Analysis. The North Pacific Index (atmospheric pressure) and meso-scale climate variables like the El Niño Index (temperature), wind, and freshwater input (circulation) had the strongest impacts on ichthyoplankton species clusters. Specifically, the El Niño Index was negatively correlated with several ichthyoplankton clusters that were dominated by cold water species. Circulation was predominantly positively related to diversity and ichthyoplankton clusters, with the exception of clusters that mainly consisted of offshore taxa. The immediate response of ichthyoplankton to environmental forcing might make them suitable ecological indicators of environmental change although additional work is needed to assess affects on survival and recruitment. 相似文献

The responses to vestibular stimulation of brain stem neurons that regulate sympathetic outflow and blood flow have been studied extensively in decerebrate preparations, but not in conscious animals. In the present study, we compared the responses of neurons in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM), a principal region of the brain stem involved in the regulation of blood pressure, to whole body rotations of conscious and decerebrate cats. In both preparations, RVLM neurons exhibited similar levels of spontaneous activity (median of ~17 spikes/s). The firing of about half of the RVLM neurons recorded in decerebrate cats was modulated by rotations; these cells were activated by vertical tilts in a variety of directions, with response characteristics suggesting that their labyrinthine inputs originated in otolith organs. The activity of over one-third of RVLM neurons in decerebrate animals was altered by stimulation of baroreceptors; RVLM units with and without baroreceptor signals had similar responses to rotations. In contrast, only 6% of RVLM neurons studied in conscious cats exhibited cardiac-related activity, and the firing of just 1% of the cells was modulated by rotations. These data suggest that the brain stem circuitry mediating vestibulosympathetic reflexes is highly sensitive to changes in body position in space but that the responses to vestibular stimuli of neurons in the pathway are suppressed by higher brain centers in conscious animals. The findings also raise the possibility that autonomic responses to a variety of inputs, including those from the inner ear, could be gated according to behavioral context and attenuated when they are not necessary. 相似文献
