A new method is presented for estimating the parameters of two different models of a joint. The two models are: (1) A rotational joint with a fixed axis of rotation, also referred to as a hinge joint and (2) a ball and socket model, corresponding to a spherical joint. Given the motion of a set of markers, it is shown how the parameters can be estimated, utilizing the whole data set. The parameters are estimated from motion data by minimizing two objective functions. The method does not assume a rigid body motion, but only that each marker rotates around the same fixed axis of rotation or center of rotation. Simulation results indicate that in situations where the rigid body assumption is valid and when measurement noise is present, the proposed method is inferior to methods that utilize the rigid body assumption. However, when there are large skin movement artefacts, simulation results show the proposed method to be more robust.  相似文献

This paper describes an investigation into the biomechanical effects of load carriage dynamics on human locomotion performance. A whole body, inverse dynamics gait model has been developed which uses only kinematic input data to define the gait cycle. To provide input data, three-dimensional gait measurements have been conducted to capture whole body motion while carrying a backpack. A nonlinear suspension model is employed to describe the backpack dynamics. The model parameters for a particular backpack system can be identified using a dynamic load carriage test-rig. Biomechanical assessments have been conducted based on combined gait and pack simulations. It was found that the backpack suspension stiffness and damping have little effect on human locomotion energetics. However, decreasing suspension stiffness offers important biomechanical advantages. The peak values of vertical pack force, acting on the trunk, and lower limb joint loads are all moderated. This would reduce shoulder strap pressures and the risk of injury when heavy loads are carried.  相似文献

Studies have suggested that the nervous system may adopt a control scheme in which synergistic muscle groups are controlled by common excitation patters, or modules, to simplify the coordination of movement tasks such as walking. A recent computer modeling and simulation study of human walking using experimentally derived modules as the control inputs provided evidence that individual modules are associated with specific biomechanical subtasks, such as generating body support and forward propulsion. The present study tests whether the modules identified during normal walking could produce simulations of walking when the mechanical demands were substantially altered. Walking simulations were generated that emulated human subjects who had their body weight and/or body mass increased and decreased by 25%. By scaling the magnitude of five module patterns, the simulations could emulate the subjects’ response to each condition by simply scaling the mechanical output from modules associated with specific biomechanical subtasks. Specifically, the modules associated with providing body support increased (decreased) their contribution to the vertical ground reaction force when body weight was increased (decreased) and the module associated with providing forward propulsion increased its contribution to the positive anterior–posterior ground reaction force and positive trunk power when the body mass was increased. The modules that contribute to controlling leg swing were unaffected by the perturbations. These results support the idea that the nervous system may use a modular control strategy and that flexible modulation of module recruitment intensity may be sufficient to meet large changes in mechanical demand.  相似文献

Marine modular organisms such as hydroids and coralsare plastic in their responses to continuouslychanging environments. Morphogenetic limitations areless important for modular animals and plants, thanfor unitary ones. Although each module variesrelatively little, modular organisms are characterizedby an extremely broad plasticity of shape. Sessilecolonial animals grow into a heterogenous environmentand so each modular organism has its own often uniqueshape. The mechanism of modular body plasticity andadaptation to the environment is based on cyclicalmorphogenesis through replication of modules.Plasticity of shape is achieved not only by colonialgrowth, but during unfavorable periods also by bodyreduction due to module reabsorbtion.  相似文献

This paper presents and discusses a novel mechanism which was conceived taking inspiration from the micro-hydraulic system used by spiders to extend their legs. The mechanism has the potential to be used in future space applications, although the harsh space conditions, and in particular outgassing, should be carefully addressed in the design of a space-qualified model. The new system has one degree of freedom and is actuated by a pressurized fluidic system. The prototype, which has been designed, simulated, built and tested, is of compact size and presents a repeatable behaviour. The relation between pressure and rotation is approximately linear. The mechanism is suitable for a modular configuration in which several elastic joint modules are joined together. This modular configuration allows large rotations and does not increase the complexity of the actuation. A single module bends about 1.8 degrees when the pressure of the working fluid is 1.2 MPa.  相似文献

An approach combining genetic, proteomic, computational, and physiological analysis was used to define a protein network that regulates fat storage in budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). A computational analysis of this network shows that it is not scale-free, and is best approximated by the Watts-Strogatz model, which generates “small-world” networks with high clustering and short path lengths. The network is also modular, containing energy level sensing proteins that connect to four output processes: autophagy, fatty acid synthesis, mRNA processing, and MAP kinase signaling. The importance of each protein to network function is dependent on its Katz centrality score, which is related both to the protein’s position within a module and to the module’s relationship to the network as a whole. The network is also divisible into subnetworks that span modular boundaries and regulate different aspects of fat metabolism. We used a combination of genetics and pharmacology to simultaneously block output from multiple network nodes. The phenotypic results of this blockage define patterns of communication among distant network nodes, and these patterns are consistent with the Watts-Strogatz model.  相似文献

We propose a novel methodology for predicting human gait pattern kinematics based on a statistical and stochastic approach using a method called Gaussian process regression (GPR). We selected 14 body parameters that significantly affect the gait pattern and 14 joint motions that represent gait kinematics. The body parameter and gait kinematics data were recorded from 113 subjects by anthropometric measurements and a motion capture system. We generated a regression model with GPR for gait pattern prediction and built a stochastic function mapping from body parameters to gait kinematics based on the database and GPR, and validated the model with a cross validation method. The function can not only produce trajectories for the joint motions associated with gait kinematics, but can also estimate the associated uncertainties. Our approach results in a novel, low-cost and subject-specific method for predicting gait kinematics with only the subject's body parameters as the necessary input, and also enables a comprehensive understanding of the correlation and uncertainty between body parameters and gait kinematics.  相似文献

A modular dendrimer-based drug delivery platform was designed to improve upon existing limitations in single dendrimer systems. Using this modular strategy, a biologically active platform containing receptor mediated targeting and fluorescence imaging modules was synthesized by coupling a folic acid (FA) conjugated dendrimer with a fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) conjugated dendrimer. The two different dendrimer modules were coupled via the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction ("click" chemistry) between an alkyne moiety on the surface of the first dendrimer and an azide moiety on the second dendrimer. Two simplified model systems were also synthesized to develop appropriate "click" reaction conditions and aid in spectroscopic assignments. Conjugates were characterized by (1)H NMR spectroscopy and NOESY. The FA-FITC modular platform was evaluated in vitro with a human epithelial cancer cell line (KB) and found to specifically target the overexpressed folic acid receptor.  相似文献

A modification to an existing mathematical model is described, which permits the determination of subject-specific inertia parameters for wobbling and rigid masses of female body segments. The model comprises segment-specific soft tissue, bone, and lung components. A total of 59 geometric solids (40 soft tissue, 17 bone, 2 lung) were used to represent the body components. Ninety-five anthropometric measurements were collected from 7 female participants and were used to develop and evaluate the model. The success of the model is evaluated using predicted mass and mass distribution. The overall absolute accuracy in predicted whole body mass was better than 3.0%, with a maximum error of 4.9%. The appropriateness of the cadaver-based density values used in the model is addressed and the accuracy of the component inertia model in relation to uniform density models is discussed. The model offers a novel approach for determining component inertia parameters, which have been used successfully in a wobbling mass model to produce realistic kinetic analyses of drop-landings.  相似文献

The size of a pair of cortical ocular dominance columns determines a basic anatomical module of V-1 which Hubel and Wiesel have termed the hypercolumn. Does this correspond to a basic functional, or psychophysically measurable, module as well? This is the basic question addressed in the present paper. Since the ocular dominance column architecture is presumed to be related to stereo vision, it is natural to assume that hypercolumn size should provide a modular basis for basic phenomena of stereopsis. In previous work, we have suggested that local nonlinear filtering via the cepstral transform, operating on a local window of cortical tissue scaled by hypercolumn size, provides such a modular model of stereopsis. In the present paper, we review this model and then discuss a number of issues related to the biological plausibility and implementation of this algorithm. Then, we present the main result of this paper: we have analyzed a number of experiments related to stereo fusion limits (Panum's area) and to disparity gradient and disparity scaling, and demonstrate that there is a simple unifying explanation for these phenomena in terms of a constant cortical module whose size is determined by a pair of ocular dominance columns. As a corollary, Panum's area must increase according to (inverse) cortical magnification factor. We show that this is supported by all existing experimental data.  相似文献

Background

Arsenic in drinking water, a major health hazard to millions of people in South and East Asia and in other parts of the world, is ingested primarily as trivalent inorganic arsenic (iAs), which then undergoes hepatic methylation to methylarsonic acid (MMAs) and a second methylation to dimethylarsinic acid (DMAs). Although MMAs and DMAs are also known to be toxic, DMAs is more easily excreted in the urine and therefore methylation has generally been considered a detoxification pathway. A collaborative modeling project between epidemiologists, biologists, and mathematicians has the purpose of explaining existing data on methylation in human studies in Bangladesh and also testing, by mathematical modeling, effects of nutritional supplements that could increase As methylation.

Methods

We develop a whole body mathematical model of arsenic metabolism including arsenic absorption, storage, methylation, and excretion. The parameters for arsenic methylation in the liver were taken from the biochemical literature. The transport parameters between compartments are largely unknown, so we adjust them so that the model accurately predicts the urine excretion rates of time for the iAs, MMAs, and DMAs in single dose experiments on human subjects.

Results

We test the model by showing that, with no changes in parameters, it predicts accurately the time courses of urinary excretion in mutiple dose experiments conducted on human subjects. Our main purpose is to use the model to study and interpret the data on the effects of folate supplementation on arsenic methylation and excretion in clinical trials in Bangladesh. Folate supplementation of folate-deficient individuals resulted in a 14% decrease in arsenicals in the blood. This is confirmed by the model and the model predicts that arsenicals in the liver will decrease by 19% and arsenicals in other body stores by 26% in these same individuals. In addition, the model predicts that arsenic methyltransferase has been upregulated by a factor of two in this population. Finally, we also show that a modification of the model gives excellent fits to the data on arsenic metabolism in human cultured hepatocytes.

Conclusions

The analysis of the Bangladesh data using the model suggests that folate supplementation may be more effective at reducing whole body arsenic than previously expected. There is almost no data on the upregulation of arsenic methyltransferase in populations chronically exposed to arsenic. Our model predicts upregulation by a factor of two in the Bangladesh population studied. This prediction should be verified since it could have important public health consequences both for treatment strategies and for setting appropriate limits on arsenic in drinking water. Our model has compartments for the binding of arsenicals to proteins inside of cells and we show that these comparments are necessary to obtain good fits to data. Protein-binding of arsenicals should be explored in future biochemical studies.  相似文献

Biomechanical models are important tools in the study of human motion. This work proposes a computational model to analyse the dynamics of lower limb motion using a kinematic chain to represent the body segments and rotational joints linked by viscoelastic elements. The model uses anthropometric parameters, ground reaction forces and joint Cardan angles from subjects to analyse lower limb motion during the gait. The model allows evaluating these data in each body plane. Six healthy subjects walked on a treadmill to record the kinematic and kinetic data. In addition, anthropometric parameters were recorded to construct the model. The viscoelastic parameter values were fitted for the model joints (hip, knee and ankle). The proposed model demonstrated that manipulating the viscoelastic parameters between the body segments could fit the amplitudes and frequencies of motion. The data collected in this work have viscoelastic parameter values that follow a normal distribution, indicating that these values are directly related to the gait pattern. To validate the model, we used the values of the joint angles to perform a comparison between the model results and previously published data. The model results show a same pattern and range of values found in the literature for the human gait motion.  相似文献

This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) whole body multi-segment model for inverse dynamics analysis over a complete gait cycle, based only on measured kinematic data. The sequence of inverse dynamics calculations differs significantly from the conventional application of inverse dynamics using force plate data. A new validated "Smooth Transition Assumption" was used to solve the indeterminacy problem in the double support phase. Kinematic data is required for all major body segments and, hence, a whole body gait measurement protocol is presented. Finally, sensitivity analyses were conducted to evaluate the effects of digital filtering and body segment parameters on the accuracy of the prediction results. The model gave reasonably good estimates of sagittal plane ground forces and moment; however, the estimates in the other planes were less good, which we believe is largely due to their small magnitudes in comparison to the sagittal forces and moment. The errors observed are most likely caused by errors in the kinematic data resulting from skin movement artefact and by errors in the estimated body segment parameters. A digital filtering cut-off frequency of 4.5Hz was found to produce the best results. It was also shown that errors in the mass properties of body segments can play a crucial role, with changes in properties sometimes having a disproportionate effect on the calculated ground reactions. The implication of these results is that, even when force plate data is available, the estimated joint forces are likely to suffer from similar errors.  相似文献

It has been frequently reported that vertical impact force peaks during running change only minimally when changing the midsole hardness of running shoes. However, the underlying mechanism for these experimental observations is not well understood. An athlete has various possibilities to influence external and internal forces during ground contact (e.g. landing velocity, geometrical alignment, muscle tuning, etc.). The purpose of this study was to discuss one possible strategy to influence external impact forces acting on the athlete's body during running, the strategy to change muscle activity (muscle tuning). The human body was modeled as a simplified mass-spring-damper system. The model included masses of the upper and the lower bodies with each part of the body represented by a rigid and a non-rigid wobbling mass. The influence of mechanical properties of the human body on the vertical impact force peak was examined by varying the spring constants and damping coefficients of the spring-damper units that connected the various masses. Two types of shoe soles were modeled using a non-linear force deformation model with two sets of parameters based on the force-deformation curves of pendulum impact experiments. The simulated results showed that the regulation of the mechanical coupling of rigid and wobbling masses of the human body had an influence on the magnitude of the vertical impact force, but not on its loading rate. It was possible to produce the same impact force peaks altering specific mechanical properties of the system for a soft and a hard shoe sole. This regulation can be achieved through changes of joint angles, changes in joint angular velocities and/or changes in muscle activation levels in the lower extremity. Therefore, it has been concluded that changes in muscle activity (muscle tuning) can be used as a possible strategy to affect vertical impact force peaks during running.  相似文献

This paper focuses on analysis of spatiotemporal binary data with absorbing states. The research was motivated by a clinical study on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurological disease marked by gradual loss of muscle strength over time in multiple body regions. We propose an autologistic regression model to capture complex spatial and temporal dependencies in muscle strength among different muscles. As it is not clear how the disease spreads from one muscle to another, it may not be reasonable to define a neighborhood structure based on spatial proximity. Relaxing the requirement for prespecification of spatial neighborhoods as in existing models, our method identifies an underlying network structure empirically to describe the pattern of spreading disease. The model also allows the network autoregressive effects to vary depending on the muscles’ previous status. Based on the joint distribution derived from this autologistic model, the joint transition probabilities of responses among locations can be estimated and the disease status can be predicted in the next time interval. Model parameters are estimated through maximization of penalized pseudo‐likelihood. Postmodel selection inference was conducted via a bias‐correction method, for which the asymptotic distributions were derived. Simulation studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The method was applied to the analysis of muscle strength loss from the ALS clinical study.  相似文献

Incorporating the intrinsic variability of heart contractility varying with heart rate into the mathematical model of human heart would be useful for addressing the dynamical behaviors of human cardiovascular system, but models with such features were rarely reported. This study focused on the development and evaluation of a mathematical model of the whole heart, including the effects of heart contractility varying with heart rate changes. This model was developed based on a paradigm and model presented by Ottesen and Densielsen, which was used to model ventricular contraction. A piece-wise function together with expressions for time-related parameters were constructed for modeling atrial contraction. Atrial and ventricular parts of the whole heart model were evaluated by comparing with models from literature, and then the whole heart model were assessed through coupling with a simple model of the systemic circulation system and the pulmonary circulation system. The results indicated that both atrial and ventricular parts of the whole heart model could reasonably reflect their contractility varying with heart rate changes, and the whole heart model could exhibit major features of human heart. Results of the parameters variation studies revealed the correlations between the parameters in the whole heart model and performances (including the maximum pressure and the stroke volume) of every chamber. These results would be useful for helping users to adjust parameters in special applications.  相似文献

A biomechanical evaluation of whiplash using a multi-body dynamic model   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
This paper presents a biomechanical evaluation of whiplash injury potential during the initial extension motion of the head in a rear-end collision. A four-segment dynamic model is developed in the sagittal plane for the analysis. The model response is validated using the existing experimental data and is shown to simulate the "S-shape" kinematics of the cervical spine and the resulting dynamics observed in human and cadaver experiments. The model is then used to evaluate the effects of parameters such as collision severity, head/headrest separation, and the initial head orientation in the sagittal plane on the "S-shape" kinematics of the cervical spine and the resulting neck loads. It is shown, for example, that the cervical spine forms an "S-shape" for a range of change in speeds and that at lower and higher speeds changes the spine does not form the "S-shape." Furthermore, it is shown that the "S-shape" formation also depends on the head to headrest separation distance.  相似文献

This paper presents a method allowing a simple and efficient sensitivity analysis of dynamics parameters of complex whole-body human model. The proposed method is based on the ground reaction and joint moment regressor matrices, developed initially in robotics system identification theory, and involved in the equations of motion of the human body. The regressor matrices are linear relatively to the segment inertial parameters allowing us to use simple sensitivity analysis methods. The sensitivity analysis method was applied over gait dynamics and kinematics data of nine subjects and with a 15 segments 3D model of the locomotor apparatus. According to the proposed sensitivity indices, 76 segments inertial parameters out the 150 of the mechanical model were considered as not influent for gait. The main findings were that the segment masses were influent and that, at the exception of the trunk, moment of inertia were not influent for the computation of the ground reaction forces and moments and the joint moments. The same method also shows numerically that at least 90% of the lower-limb joint moments during the stance phase can be estimated only from a force-plate and kinematics data without knowing any of the segment inertial parameters.  相似文献

On the origin of modular variation   总被引:10,自引:1,他引:9
We study the dynamics of modularization in a minimal substrate. A module is a functional unit relatively separable from its surrounding structure. Although it is known that modularity is useful both for robustness and for evolvability (Wagner 1996), there is no quantitative model describing how such modularity might originally emerge. Here we suggest, using simple computer simulations, that modularity arises spontaneously in evolutionary systems in response to variation, and that the amount of modular separation is logarithmically proportional to the rate of variation. Consequently, we predict that modular architectures would appear in correlation with high environmental change rates. Because this quantitative model does not require any special substrate to occur, it may also shed light on the origin of modular variation in nature. This observed relationship also indicates that modular design is a generic phenomenon that might be applicable to other fields, such as engineering: Engineering design methods based on evolutionary simulation would benefit from evolving to variable, rather than stationary, fitness criteria, as a weak and problem-independent method for inducing modularity.  相似文献
