Approaches based on association studies have proven useful in identifying genetic predictors for many diseases, including susceptibility to chronic hepatitis B. In this study we were interested by the IL-1B genetic variants that have been involved in the immune response and we analyzed their role in the susceptibility to develop chronic hepatitis B in the Tunisian population. IL - 1B is a potent proinflammatory cytokine that plays an important role in inflammation of the liver. Polymorphic gene IL-1 ( − 511, +3954) was analyzed in a total of 476 individuals: 236 patients with chronic hepatitis B from different cities of Tunisia recruited in Pasteur Institute between January 2017 and December 2018 and 240 controls. Genomic DNA was obtained using the standard salting-out method and genotyping was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism. For − 511C>T polymorphism a significant association was found between patients and controls when comparing the genotypic (P = 0.007; χ2 = 9.74 and odds ratio [OR] = 0.60; confidence interval [CI] = 0.41–0.89) and allelic (P = 0.001; χ2 = 10.60) frequencies. When the viral load was taken into account a highly significant difference was found (P = 9 × 10−4; χ2 = 10.89). For +3954C>T polymorphism a significant association was found between patients and controls when comparing genotypic (P = 0.0058; χ2 = 7.60 and OR = 1.67; CI = 1.14–2.46) and allelic (P = 0.0029; χ2 = 8.81) frequencies. T allele can be used as a strong marker for hepatitis B virus disease for both polymorphisms.  相似文献

Abstract: Scent-matching dogs have previously been used to identify caged individual Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) by fecal material (scat), but this technique has not been tested in the wild. We tested the hypothesis that trained dogs can identify individual tigers by unique characteristics present in scat. To conduct this work, we used 5 dogs and 58 scats from 25 known individual tigers in independent trials. Dogs correctly selected matched test scats at an average rate of 87% (SE ± 1.4%, n = 521 trials). The average accuracy rates for 4 dogs increased to 98% (SE ± 1.6%, n = 86 sets of repeated-trials) using repeated-trial tests. Each of 5 dogs made correct choices better than expected by chance (dog 1 χ21 = 507.9, P ≤ 0.001; dog 2 χ21 = 882.1, P ≤ 0.001; dog 3 χ21 = 374.1, P ≤ 0.001; dog 4 χ21 = 379.2, P ≤ 0.001; and dog 5 χ21 = 103.9, P ≤ 0.001). Four dogs were able to match 11 scats deposited over a 4-year period from one tiger with an accuracy of 100% (n = 40 trails). This method may be a useful alternative to genetic analyses that are used in conjunction with scat-sampling schemes in studies for which DNA genotyping is impractical or ineffective. Used with mark—recapture surveys to estimate species abundance, scent-matching dogs have the potential of being important tools in the study of wild Amur tigers, as well as other wildlife species.  相似文献

The relationship between morningness/eveningness, sleep, and psychological problems is well documented in adults as well as in adolescents. However, research on the circadian orientation and its concomitants in younger children is scarce. The authors investigated the distribution of morningness/eveningness and its connection to sleeping and psychological problems in 91 children and 151 adolescents in Austria. The authors found that morning (M) types had less sleep-related and psychological problems than intermediate (I) and evening (E) types, respectively. Among children, M-types suffered less from daytime sleepiness (females: χ2(2)?=?8.1, p?=?.017; males: χ2(2)?=?14.8, p?=?.001). Among adolescents, M-types showed fewer sleep-wake problems (females: χ2(2)?=?17.5, p?<?.001; males: χ2(2)?=?19.8, p?<?.001), and female M-types showed less externalizing (χ2(2)?=?8.7, p?=?.013) as well as internalizing problem behavior (χ2(2)?=?9.0, p?=?.011). In conclusion, these findings indicate that morningness may act as a protective factor against the development of sleep-related problems in childhood and sleep-related and psychological problems in adolescence, especially in females. Feeding ecology and prey selection of sand smelt (Atherina boyeri, Risso, 1810) were investigated by taking monthly samples (January to December 2010) at four stations of Lake E?irdir, (Turkey) using gill nets (mesh sizes 10–100 mm) and purse‐seines (mesh size 6 mm). A total of 49 out of 612 analysed stomachs were empty (8.01%); stomach contents included eight major prey categories: zooplankton, phytoplankton, Arachnida, Arthropoda, Insecta, fishes as well as unidentified organisms and remains. Dominant prey items included cladocerans (Bosmina longirostris [% N = 67.92], Alona quadrangularis [% N = 5.06]), copepods (Nitokra hibernica [% N = 9.30], Mesocyclops leuckarti [% N = 3.35]), and arthropoda (Corophium curvispinum [% N = 3.46]). The importance of Insecta, Arthropoda, fishes, and unidentified eggs increased in the diet with increasing size of the sand smelt, whereas the contribution of Cladocera and Copepoda decreased. Sand smelt strongly preferred B. longirostris (selectivity index V = 0.639, χ2 = 81.689, p < .01), N. hibernica (V = 0.205, χ2 = 8.429, p < .01), and A. quadrangularis (V = 0.159, χ2 = 5.039, p < .01) despite their low abundance in the environment. Atherina boyeri (V = ?0.699, χ2 = 97.812, p < .01), Aphanius anatoliae (V = ?0.328, χ2 = 21.463, p < .01), Insecta (V = ?0.229, χ2 = 10.497, p < .01), and Keratella cochlearis (V = ?0.265, χ2 = 14.009, p < .01) were the most abundant prey in the environment, however they were negatively selected by sand smelt. Knipowitschia caucasica, Asplanchna priodonta, Trichocerca sp., Lecane sp., and Acaridae also inhabit the lake, but were not found in the sand smelt food items. Cladocerans dominated during autumn and winter, arthropods, copepods, rotifers and phytoplankton in spring, whereas Insecta and fishes were dominant in summer.  相似文献

Diet composition and prey selection of pike (Esox lucius) were studied in Çivril Lake, Turkey. The lake is eutrophic in character with a surface area of ca. 64 km?2 and mean depth of 3 m. Stomach contents of 409 specimens were collected between October 2003 and April 2005. Pike diet included 10 prey fish species, two Crustaceae, four Insecta, one Hirudinae and one Amphibia. Feeding was homogeneous, with most pike specializing in prey fish and a few pike specializing on miscellaneous items. Feeding activity varied by season and ontogeny. Stomach fullness and the percentage of fish with prey were highest in spring and in small pike, while feeding intensity was lowest in winter and in large sized pike. Diet composition was dominated by fish, including Carasius gibelio, Chondrostoma meandrense, Esox lucius, Gambusia affinis, Gobio gobio, Hemigrammocapoeta kemali, Leuciscus cephalus, and Tinca tinca. Crustacea were also a significant component in spring and in small sized pike. The most important prey items were C. meandrense, Gammarus sp., H. kemali, and L. cephalus. Pike feeding in winter and summer was homogeneous, specializing mainly on fish as prey, while the diet in spring and autumn was heterogeneous with some pike specializing on Gammarus sp. Cannibalism at 8.7% was observed only in the large sized pike (>40 cm). Pike strongly preferred C. meandrense (Selectivity index V = 0.372; χ2 = 27.739; P < 0.01), G. gobio (V = 0.192; χ2 = 7.350; P < 0.01) and T. tinca (V = 0.146; χ2 = 4.257; P < 0.05) despite their low abundance in the lake. Hemigrammocapoeta kemali was the most abundant prey fish in the environment; however, it was a negatively selected food item (V = ?0.358; χ2 = 25.642; P < 0.01). Cyprinus carpio also inhabits the lake, but was not preferred by pike (V = ?0.056; χ2 = 0.625; P > 0.05).  相似文献

The experiments and simulations reported in this paper show that, for stomata sensitive to both CO2 and water vapour concentrations, responses of stomatal conductance (gws) to boundary layer thickness have two components, one resulting from changes in intercellular CO2 concentration (χci) and another from changes in leaf surface water vapour saturation deficit (Dws). The experiments and simulations also show that the boundary layer conductance (gwb) can significantly alter the apparent response of gws to ambient air CO2 mole fraction (χca) and water vapour mole fraction (χwa). Because of the feedback loop involved the responses of gws for χca and χwa each include responses to both χci and Dws. The boundary layer alters the state of the variables sensed by the guard cells—i.e. χci and Dws—and so it is a source of feedback. Thus, when scaling up from responses of stomata to the response of gws for a whole leaf, the effect of the boundary layer must be considered. The results indicate that, for given responses of gws to χci and Dws, the apparent responses of gws to Dwa and χca depend on the size of the leaf and wind speed, showing that this effect of the boundary layer should be considered when comparing data measured under different conditions, or with different methods.  相似文献

The chiroptical properties of the cyclic dipeptides cyclo-L -alanyl-L -histidine and cyclo-L -histidinyl-L -histidine have been investigated as a function of molecular conformation. The rotatory strengths of the n-π* transitions of the peptide chromophores and the lowest energy π-π* transitions of the imidazole chromophores have been calculated as a function of the angle of fold of the cyclic dipeptide group and the dihedral angles χ1 and χ2 of the amino acid side chains. The results of this investigation are consistent with the preferred position of the dihedral angle χ1 occurring near 60° in the free base form of cyclo-L -alanyl-L -histidine, and near 180° when the imidazole side chain is protonated. Furthermore, in the case of the free base form of the imidazole group, it is possible that the tautomeric isomer in which Nε is protonated may be more prevalent than the isomer in which Nδ is protonated.  相似文献

The behavior of Pearson's X2 test, the likelihood ratio test Y2 and the two of its derivatives, G2 and Gk2, the Freeman-Tukey test (FT) and the Cressie and Read test Statistic I(2/3) are examined in this study. Estimated attained α levels based on 1000 simulated samples when the approximating distribution is χk-12, are computed for these tests for the various values of k, n and seven null hypotheses. Results from estimated power computations indicate that none of the test statistics has a clear advantage over any others, and that the choice of which test to use must therefore rest mainly on the performances with regards to the attained α levels when the χ2 approximation is invoked. In this respect, the log-normal approximation proposed by Lawal and Upton (1980) is strongly recommended. This is closely followed by the I(2/3).  相似文献

Encounters were staged between male and oestrus-induced females of the same or different taxa of the species/subspecies Gerbillurus paeba paeba, G. p. exilis, G. tytonis, G. setzeri, G. vallinus and Tatera brantsii. Each encounter lasted 20 min; converted ultrasonic emissions were recorded on videotape simultaneously with visual images. Videotapes were transcribed and sequences of acts and vocalizations were recorded. The frequency of acts was compared separately with the number of ultrasonic vocalizations during and after acts by χ2 contingency table analysis, followed by partitioned χ2 to identify individual acts which contributed significantly to the overall χ2 value. Vocalizations occurred significantly more frequently than expected during sexual and/or huddling behaviour in all species-groups; and significantly less frequently than expected during exploratory, watching and/or submissive behaviour. Vocalizations were uncommon during investigative behaviour in all taxa, and aggressive behaviour in Gerbillurus taxa, but occurred significantly more frequently than expected after these behaviour categories in all taxa. Analysis of vocalizations immediately following acts verified the interpretations of function of vocalizations during acts. Ultrasonic vocalizations clearly play an important role in the communication of six taxa of southern African gerbils.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the power behaviour of four goodness-of-fit test statistics in sparse multinomials with k cells. Most previous work has been concerned only with both Pearson's X2 and the likelihood ratio test statistics. We consider in this study, two additional test statistics, namely, the Cressie-Read test statistic – I(2/3) and the modified Freeman-Tukey test (FT) statistic. Because k ≥ 10 in this study, a Monte Carlo procedure based on 1000 simulated samples is used to estimate the powers for the four test statistics. Alternatives on various line segments are employed. Results suggest that none of the test statistics completely dominate the other and that the choice of which test to use depends on the nature of the alternative hypothesis. These results are consistent with those obtained by West and Kempthorne (1972), although, the Pearson's χ2 test statistic may be preferred because of its closer approximation to the χ2 distribution in terms of the attained α levels.  相似文献

Empirical energy calculations on cyclo-Gly-X with X- Phe, Tyr, Val, and Leu as a function of the side-chain torsion angles χ indicate that the conformation of minimum energy are characterized by χ1 = 60°, χ2 = 90° for Phe and Try, χ1 = ?60° for Val and χ1 = ?60°, χ2 = 180° and χ1 = 60° and χ2 = 150° for Leu. The minimum energy conformation of cyclo-Gly-Phe and cyclo-Gly-Val have the side chains of Phe and Val stacked over the poperazinedione ring as suggested by NMR and found for cyclo-Gly-Tyr crystal structure. In contrast, the Leu side chain is expected to exist in an extended or a quasi-folded form.  相似文献

Summary The median failure time is often utilized to summarize survival data because it has a more straightforward interpretation for investigators in practice than the popular hazard function. However, existing methods for comparing median failure times for censored survival data either require estimation of the probability density function or involve complicated formulas to calculate the variance of the estimates. In this article, we modify a K ‐sample median test for censored survival data ( Brookmeyer and Crowley, 1982 , Journal of the American Statistical Association 77, 433–440) through a simple contingency table approach where each cell counts the number of observations in each sample that are greater than the pooled median or vice versa. Under censoring, this approach would generate noninteger entries for the cells in the contingency table. We propose to construct a weighted asymptotic test statistic that aggregates dependent χ2 ‐statistics formed at the nearest integer points to the original noninteger entries. We show that this statistic follows approximately a χ2 ‐distribution with k? 1 degrees of freedom. For a small sample case, we propose a test statistic based on combined p ‐values from Fisher’s exact tests, which follows a χ2 ‐distribution with 2 degrees of freedom. Simulation studies are performed to show that the proposed method provides reasonable type I error probabilities and powers. The proposed method is illustrated with two real datasets from phase III breast cancer clinical trials.  相似文献

The chiroptical properties of the cyclic dipeptides cyclo (L -alanyl-L -tyrosine) and cyclo(L -tyrosyl-L -tyrosine) have been investigated as a function of molecular conformation. Theoretical optical calculations and conformational energy calculations have been carried out as a function of the side-chain dihedral angles χ1 and χ2, and as a function of the angle of fold of the cyclic dipeptide backbone. The results of these theoretical calculations have been compared with experimental circular dichroism (CD) data. Theoretical predictions are in very good agreement with experiment for c(L -Tyr-L -Tyr). Agreement was not quite as good for c(L -Ala-L -Tyr), although the signs of all of the Cotton effects were apparently predicted correctly except for that associated with the lowest energy tyrosine absorption band.  相似文献

In many statistical applications a data set needs to be evaluated but there is no solid information about which probability distribution might be most appropriate. Typical solutions to this problems are: to make assumptions that facilitate mathematical treatment; to use a family of distribution functions that contains all relevant distributions as special cases; or, to employ nonparametric methods. All three solutions have disadvantages since assumptions are usually difficult to justify, families of distributions contain too many parameters to be of practical use, and nonparametric methods make it difficult to characterize data in a succinct quantitative form. The S-distribution introduced here is a compromise between the conflicting goals of simplicity in analysis and generality in scope. It is characterized by four parameters, one of which reflects its location, the second one its spread, and the remaining two its shape; transformation to a standard form reduces the number of free parameters to two. Cumulatives and densities are computed numerically in fractions of seconds, key features like quantiles and moments are easily obtained, and results can be presented in terms of parameter values. The S-distribution rather accurately models different distribution functions, including central and noncentral distributions, and thus competes in flexibility with some distribution families. As an approximation, the S-distribution provides a graphical method for demonstrating relationships between distributions, such as the relationships between central F, χ2 and χ?2 or central and noncentral t, χ-1, and normal.  相似文献

This study analyzed the fluctuation of the achromatic visual contrast sensitivity (CS) of adult males (M = 23.42 ± 2.6 years) during a daily period. Twenty-eight volunteers were divided into three groups according to circadian typology (CT): moderate morning (MM; n = 8); intermediate (I; n = 10) and moderate evening (ME; n = 10). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to evaluate sleep quality, and the Horne and Ostberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire was used to measure CT. To measure CS, we used Metropsis software version 11.0 with vertical sinusoidal grids of 0.2, 0.6, 1, 3.1, 6.1, 8.8, 13.2 and 15.6 cycles per degree of visual angle (cpd). The stimuli were presented on a cathode ray tube (CRT) color video monitor with a 19-inch flat screen, a 1024 × 786 pixel resolution, a 100 Hz refresh rate and a photopic luminance of 39.6 cd/m2. It was inferred that there is a tendency for visual contrast to vary according to daily rhythmicity and CT, mainly for the median spatial frequencies (1.0 cpd, χ2 = 9.93, p < 0.05 and 3.1 cpd, χ2 = 10.33, p < 0.05) and high spatial frequencies (13.2 cpd, χ2 = 11.54, p < 0.05) of ME participants. ME participants had minimal visual contrast sensitivity during the morning shift and a progressive increase from afternoon to night.  相似文献

An efficient recursive polynomial multiplication method is proposed for exact unconditional power calculation for unordered 2 × K contingency table with up to moderate sample size. Our method can be applied to the family of cell-additive statistics which includes the Freeman-Halton statistic, the Pearson χ2 statistic and the likelihood ratio statistic. Like many other serious acute cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, acute myocardial infarction (AMI) shows seasonal variation, being most frequent in the winter. We sought to investigate whether age, gender, and hypertension influence this pattern. We studied 4014 (2259 male and 1755 female) consecutive patients with AMI presenting to St. Anna Hospital of Ferrara, Italy between January 1998 and December 2004. Some 1131 (28.2%) of the AMI occurred in persons <65 yrs of age, and 2883 (71.8%) in those ≥65 yrs of age. AMI was over‐represented in males (82% in the <65 yr group vs. 56.6% in the ≥65 yr group (χ2=13.99; p<0.001). Hypertension had been previously documented in 964 (24%) of the cases. There were 691 (17.2%) fatal case outcomes; fatal outcomes were significantly higher among the 3054 normotensive (n=614 or 20.1%) than the 964 hypertensive cases (n=77 or 8%; χ2=74.94, p<0.001). AMIs were most frequent in the winter (n=1076 or 26.8% of all the events) and least in the summer (n=924 or 23.0% of all the events; χ2=12.36, p=0.007). The greatest number of AMIs occurred in December (n=379 or 9.44%), and the lowest number in September (n=293 or 7.3%; χ2=11.1, p=0.001). Inferential chronobiological (Cosinor) analysis identified a significant annual pattern in AMI in those ≥65 yrs of age, with a peak between December and February—January for the total sample (p<0.005), January for the sample of males (p=0.014), February for fatal infarctions (p=0.017), and December for non‐fatal infarctions (p=0.006). No such temporal variations were detected in any of these categories in those <65 yrs of age. The annual pattern in AMI was also verified by Cosinor analysis in the following hypertensive subgroups: hypertensive males (n=552: January, p=0.014), non‐fatal infarctions in hypertensive patients (n=887: January, p=0.018), and elderly normotensives (n=1556: November, p=0.007).  相似文献

The well known χ2 goodness of fit test for a multinomial distribution is generally biased when observations are subject to misclassification. In this paper, based on a double sampling scheme, the family of φ‐divergence test statistics is introduced for testing goodness of fit under misclassification of the data. A generalized algorithm is presented for generating the ensemble of unique r × c contingency tables with arbitrary, fixed row and column sums, and of arbitrary, even large, sizes. This further contributes to the operational solution of the exact ensemble distribution of 2-way contingency tables and cross classifications, along with the sampling distribution of the conventional χ2-like test statistic, or of any other test statistic calculated from the tables.
