Bacterioplankton community diversity was investigated monthly in coastal waters of the Gulf of Trieste (NE Adriatic Sea) throughout 2003. Superficial bacterial assemblages of two differently freshwater influenced stations were studied using PCR-DGGE fingerprinting techniques. Bacterial genetic diversity of the sampled area, as estimates of the number of DGGE bands was high (36-64) compared to that reported in other studies employing this fingerprint technique. The similarity index (Sorensen Index) between assemblages showed a defined operational taxonomic units (OTUs) succession pattern in the more typically marine station with stable winter communities and quickly changing summer ones. On the contrary in the station affected by riverine inputs no clear pattern was detected. In both sites, according to cluster analyses performed on the DGGE banding pattern, three seasonal assemblages were identified: winter-spring, summer and fall. Sequence analysis of fifty-six among the brightest gel bands led to the observation of bacteria affiliated to Gram positive, Cyanobacteria, Cytophaga-Flavobacteria-Bacteroides (CFB) lineages and the alpha-, gamma- and delta- subdivisions of the Proteobacteria. Gamma-Proteobacteria constituted the main fraction (60%) of sequences in the more typically marine station, whereas the river-influenced station was characterised by more heterogeneous assemblages (39% alpha-Proteobacteria, 32% Flavobacteria).  相似文献

Three burrow systems produced by Jaxea nocturna and one cluster of burrows produced by Upogebia pusilla where investigated in the Bay of Panzano, Northern Adriatic Sea, to determine preferred orientations. The distributions of dip directions differ between both producers. Steep shafts into the consolidated mud followed by large, shallowly inclined tunnels oriented in a manner similar to a spiral are characteristic for Jaxea nocturna burrows. In contrast, the Y-shaped burrows of Upogebia pusilla have entrance shafts that are less steep which are connected by a near-horizontal section, where a blind ending tunnel branches. Orientations of the dominating, shallowly inclined burrow parts are not randomly distributed in either Jaxea or in Upogebia burrows. Three preferred axial orientations with almost equal proportions in each direction are characteristic for the Jaxea burrow from the centre of the bay. This system transforms to a squared structure near the coast, where one direction parallels the shoreline and the other is oriented at right angles to the coast. The latter orientation demonstrates significant constancy in all investigated burrows. Upogebia burrow clusters coincide with the three preferred orientations of the Jaxea burrow from the bay centre, but the proportions of the directions are unequal. Burrow segments connecting the steep entrance shafts in Upogebia are oriented almost parallel to the shoreline, whereas at right angles to the coast the flat blind-ending tunnels incline towards the open sea. The study shows a strong coincidence between empirical and theoretical distributions of the dominating orientations in both species.  相似文献

Abstract

A survey of planktonic dinoflagellates and related cysts was carried out in the Gulf of Trieste throughout one year from April 1992 to March 1993. 113 taxa were recovered by the analysis of phytoplankton net samples. The most represented genera were Protoperidinium (34 species), Ceratium (24 species), Dinophysis (15 species), Gonyaulax (11 species) and Prorocentrum (8 species). A particular attention was given to potentially toxic species belonging to the genera Dinophysis, Alexandrium and Prorocentrum. The highest number of species (67 species) was recorded in July, and the lowest one (18 species) in February.

33 cyst morphotypes were recorded by the analysis of sediment samples. The most represented genera were Protoperidinium (8 morphotypes), Scrippsiella (3 morphotypes), Gonyaulax (3 morphotypes) and Alexandrium (2 morphotypes); the cysts most frequently found were those of Conyaulax polyedra and Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax.  相似文献

Although the temporal and spatial variability of virioplankton in the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea has been repeatedly explored suggesting that viruses constitute an extremely dynamic component of the plankton community and hypothesizing their importance in marine food webs and mucilage events, there is still no information about viral replication rates. Hence, the contribution of viruses to bacterial mortality and the cycling of organic matter in this part of the Adriatic basin are still not fully comprehended. Assessment of the role of viral lysis requires a robust means of estimating viral production. Since, up to now, none of the available methods evolved to a state of a standard yet, in this preliminary study 3 different experimental approaches were simultaneously assayed (viral production estimated by radiotracer incorporation method [TdR], dilution technique for the estimate of viral production in already infected bacteria [DIL] and serial dilution method in manipulated phage-host assemblage [SER]). The present study provided the first evidence of viral production rates in this study area, that resulted in comprising between ∼ 3.5-15 × 108 viruses L− 1 h− 1 and critically faced up the results obtained by different techniques with the consideration that they suffer from different biases. Based on TdR and DIL viral proliferation estimates, viral lysis was responsible for the loss of 54 to 95% of the bacterial standing stock, while the viral-induced mortality by SER (325% d− 1) was likely consistently overestimated. These results indicate that viral lysis is a significant factor for prokaryotic mortality suggesting its implication as an important pathway for the cycling of dissolved organic matter in the Gulf of Trieste.  相似文献

A preliminary study was carried out on a picocyanobacterial mixed culture harvested from the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic) and identified as Synechococcus spp. both by transmission electron microscopy observations, biliprotein composition and molecular analyses. Absorption and fluorescence spectra revealed phycourobilin and phycoerythrobilin chromophores, suggesting the presence of both CU- and C-phycoerythrin, besides phycocyanobilin chromophores typical for phycocyanins and allophycocyanins. Both biliprotein analyses and molecular identification indicated the presence of at least two Synechococcus subgroups presumably differing either in phycoerythrin type or in physiological traits. Among the exoenzymatic activities acting on different substrates, only aminopeptidase showed high hydrolysis rates and the uptake of organic molecules was positive for leucine but not for thymidine. The protein carbon mobilized was high compared with the leucine incorporation rates, resulting in low percentages of newly mobilized carbon utilized by cultures. The organic carbon incorporated as leucine was compared with the photosynthetically produced one, and the balance between the phototrophic- and heterotrophic-like processes was c. 3 : 1. Our findings suggest that the Synechococcus heterotrophy plays an important role in cell's metabolism, and that the photoheterotrophic behavior, together with their chromatic adaptation capability, might represent the key for the absolute dominance of this genus in the Adriatic Sea.  相似文献

A yearly study was made on total and cephalothorax lengths, dry weight, carbon and nitrogen contents and C:N ratio of the species Acartia clausi (Copepoda, Calanoida) which is always abundant, particularly in spring, in the net zooplankton community of the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea). The samples of net zooplankton were carried out every month at the permanent station located 200 m offshore and preserved for about one year in 4% buffered formalin to insure weight loss stabilization. A. clausi was separated from other zooplankton specimens; washed and dried. For each monthly sample the average total and cephalothorax lengths and the average dry weight of adult organisms of A. clausi were measured. The mean carbon and nitrogen contents, as a percentage of dry weight, were determined by using a CHN analyser. Linear regression models were computed on the log-transformed data in order to check the relationships between dry weight, total and cephalothorax lengths, carbon and nitrogen contents and C:N ratio of A. clausi. The best of the various established correlations, was between dry weight and carbon content. Our study pinpointed a high seasonal variability of the C:N ratio, mainly due to seasonal fluctuations in the nitrogen content.  相似文献

Distribution of carbohydrates (CHO) and photosynthetic pigments werestudied in the Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic Sea, during the period ofsummer stratification with a special emphasis on determining the impact ofthe taxonomic composition and concentration of phytoplankton biomass on thecarbohydrate levels in the water column. Dissolved total carbohydrates(DTCHO), dissolved monosaccharides (DMCHO) as well as particulatecarbohydrates (PTCHO) were determined using the colorimetric MBTH-method,while pigment biomarkers of the phytoplankton biomass were determined byreversed-phase HPLC. Concentrations of the total CHO (dissolved+particulate) varied in a wide range from 173 μg Cl™1 to 1552 μg C l™1. The percentage ofPTCHO in the total CHO concentration was relatively low(4–25%), indicating that the main pool of CHO was in thedissolved phase. The contribution of DTCHO to the total dissolved organiccarbon (DOC) in late summeontribution r was highly variable(10–65%) with an average value of 20 ± 14%, whilein early summer this percentage was somewhat lower and less variable (range11–23%; average 17± 3%). Analyses of biomarkerpigments revealed a very high diversity and a rather heterogenous verticaland spatial distribution of the phytoplankton biomass during the period ofsummer stratification. In September 1994, the predominant taxonomic groupsof phytoplankton were prymnesiophytes, diatoms, silicoflagellates, cyanobacteria and, especially in the bottom layer, dinoflagellates. Arelatively good correlation (r2 =0.51) found betweenDTCHO and chl a suggested that DTCHO were mainly of phytoplankton origin.Furthermore, a concomitant increase of DTCHO with peridinin and fucoxanthinindicated that dinoflagellates and diatoms had a decisive impact on CHOlevels in the water column. By contrast, early summer phytoplankton (June),which was dominated by prymnesiophytes, exhibited a comparatively lowerimpact on the CHO distribution. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Sediment samples from two locationsin the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea) werecollected during periods of maximum and minimumtemperatures for two years. Both sites were rich incarbonate material and inhabited by a diverse benthicinfaunal community. However, Site F exhibited adeeper dwelling faunal community, higher content ofcarbonate minerals, and larger grained sediments thanat site MA, which was closer to shore. Depth profilesof sulfate reduction and potential rates of iron andmanganese reduction were determined together withmeasurements of pore water and solid phase chemistry. Bottom waters at all sites were nearly saturated withoxygen for all of the dates sampled except forSeptember 1993 when bottom waters at site F were lessthan 50% saturated. Sulfate reduction rates were ashigh as 400 nmol ml-1 day-1 during latesummer and fall when temperatures were >20 °C,while rates during March (8 °C) were <30 nmolml-1 day-1. Potential rates of ironreduction, as determined by the accumulation of bothdissolved and acid-soluble reduced iron, were high insurficial sediments at each site except at site F whenbottom waters were partially depleted in oxygen. In the latter instance, sulfate reduction overwhelmedmetal reduction. Although the portion of metalreduction due directly to enzymatic use by bacteriawas not determined, the potential rate data suggestedthat Fe and perhaps Mn reduction were significantcomponents of anaerobic carbon degradation in thesesediments during much of the year. Both sitesappeared to support active metal-reducing bacterialcommunities. However, occasional depletion of oxygenin bottom waters appeared to cause a decrease inirrigation/reworking activity by infauna whichdepressed redox cycling of elements enhancing theimportance of sulfate reduction. A shift from metalreduction to sulfate reduction potentially exacerbatestoxic effects of oxygen depletion on fauna byincreasing the accumulation of toxic sulfide.  相似文献

Phytoplankton succession and sinking rates were studied from January to December 2003 at a coastal station in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea), 200 m offshore, in a relatively undisturbed area. A conical sediment trap, moored at 15 m depth (water depth 17 m), was used. The hypothesis if the presence of benthic and epiphytic diatoms can lead to an overestimation of the vertical fluxes was tested. To evaluate primary and secondary sedimentation contributions, planktonic, benthic and epiphytic diatoms were distinguished. Benthic species abundance varied throughout the year and it was related to resuspension that strongly influenced sinking rates. All over the year, diatoms were the prevailing class in the trap material accounting for 75.32% of the settled cells, while flagellates represented 24.11%. Dinophyceae and resting cells constituted minor components, accounting for 0.43% and 0.14%, respectively. The gross sedimentation rates ranged from 0.006 × 108 cell m−2 d−1 in the second week of May to 6.30 × 108 cell m−2 d−1 in the third week of January with a mean annual value of 1.09 ± 1.43 × 108 cell m−2 d−1. To the primary sedimentation rate Pseudo-nitzschia seriata of the group “Nitzschia seriata complex” contributed for 49.77% followed by Chaetoceros spp. (23.88%). The major contributor to the secondary sedimentation rate was the diatom Paralia sulcata, accounting for 24.76%. Epiphytic diatoms contributed for 11.19% and 12.27% on annual average gross abundance and biomass, respectively, reaching even 72.04% of gross abundance and 56.06% of gross biomass in the second week of August. The correlation between temperature and the logarithm of the epiphytic biomass was statistically significant, with r = 0.66 and P < 0.001. Both in the cluster analysis and in the PCA four main groups were formed, where benthic and epiphytic species were separately gathered. Planktonic, benthic and epiphytic forms accounted for 50.78%, 36.95% and 12.27%, respectively, calculated on the annual average biomass. Therefore, vertical fluxes can be overestimated of 50% or more if benthic and epiphytic species are not rejected.  相似文献

Drilling predation is one of the most studied biotic interactions in the fossil record and potentially controls biodiversity, but its history may be confounded by natural patchiness across environments. This aspect has been inconsistently evaluated. The current study contributes to our understanding of drilling predation in the Northern Adriatic, which has been previously classified as a low-predation setting, and examines the roles of environment, patchiness, and ecology of prey organisms in modern seas. Nearly 49,000 molluscs from two intertidal and six sublittoral bulk samples along a transect in the Gulf of Trieste were analysed for drill frequency (DF) and prey effectiveness (PE), a measure of prey's ability to resist predatory attacks.DF across all samples was 20.6%, but varied between the intertidal (1.4%) and sublittoral (27.4%). Among the latter, DF differed between the delta foreset beds (18.1%) and level bottom muds and sands (~ 28% each). PE was low in the intertidal (1.1%) and sublittoral (4.5%). Overall DF and PE among the three mud samples varied by nearly 10%, while that within the two sand samples varied little; however, significantly different DFs were observed only among the families Nuculidae, Galeommatidae and Corbulidae in level bottom mud and Cerithiidae in level bottom sand samples. Only Corbulidae displayed significant variation in PE among level bottom mud samples (16.5–43.7%). PE varied significantly between level bottom sand samples only within the families Cerithiidae and Trochidae.Suspension-feeding bivalves and gastropods had the highest DFs (24.3% and 39.1%, respectively), and the value of epifaunal bivalves (32.0%) was nearly twice as high as that of infaunal bivalves (17.9%). DFs of cementing (43.0%) and byssate (27.0%) bivalves were higher than that of recliners (9.9%). Considering their cryptic life habits, parasitic gastropods (20.3%) and commensal bivalves (40.6%) had exceptionally high DF. For each ecological category, PE was highest on suspension-feeding (11.1%), infaunal (15.8%) and cementing (10.5%) bivalves, and on parasitic gastropods (11.9%).DF did not correlate with diversity indices or predator abundance in the sublittoral; therefore, drilling predation probably does not control diversity on the local scale here. DFs support paleoecological theory relating predation to changes in ecological guilds through the Phanerozoic. DFs were highest on suspension feeders, parasites and sessile prey, and were lowest on predators, recliners, and endobenthic molluscs. While cementation likely reduces bivalve susceptibility to durophages, it apparently does not to impede drilling predators. Finally, DF did not vary across size classes in any species examined except Venerupis rhomboides, where the smallest fraction was drilled more often. Additionally, as the proportion of large individuals in our samples was small, disparities in DF across size classes probably did not influence our results. With respect to predation intensity the relatively high DF in the sublittoral, as well as high DF and PE for various taxa and guilds, places the Northern Adriatic Sea among typical Cenozoic shelf environments.  相似文献

We performed, on a seasonal basis, 16 dilution experiments and, simultaneously, copepod or cladoceran grazing experiments onnatural assemblages from Gulf of Trieste (northern AdriaticSea). The autotrophic fraction was almost entirely composedof diatoms in late winter. As the seasons progressed, relativeabundance of nanoplankton and cyanobacteria increased. Microzooplanktonwas always present in the diet of mesozooplankton, even if inpercentages usually not exceeding 6% of diet intake on carbonbasis. Microzooplankton took advantage of ephemeral increasesof autotrophic biomass when prey were in the optimal size rangebut did not consume diatoms when these were large. When autotrophicresources were scarce, micrograzers used heterotrophic biomasswhich, in turn, fuelled the upper trophic levels through predationby mesozooplankton on microzooplankton. Microzooplankton grazingwas the most important loss term of primary production in theGulf of Trieste (on average, microzooplankton consumed 100%of primary production, while mesozooplankton only 76%), whichcan be considered a mesotrophic coastal system. This paper is one of six on the subject of the role of zooplanktonpredator–prey interactions in structuring plankton communities.  相似文献

Hexaplex trunculus (Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the most abundant and widespread muricid gastropods in the Northern Adriatic Sea, but relatively little is known about the feeding ecology of this predator. We examined the activity of H. trunculus on a sublittoral mussel bed at 24 m depth through in situ time-lapse observations and bulk samples. The camera photographed a 0.25 m2 section of the mussel bed at 6-min intervals for ~ 23 h. Photos were examined frame-by-frame for gastropod movement and activities, especially interactions between H. trunculus and Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819). Our survey indicates high activity-levels of H. trunculus on the sea floor: all gastropods made minor movements, most made major movements, and most left the field of view during the study-interval. On average, individuals remained stationary for only 7.3 h. Two predation attempts on Mytilus involving conspecific competition were documented, and one Hexaplex was consuming a mussel at the onset of the deployment. Additionally, 487 M. galloprovincialis from four diver-taken 0.25 m2 quadrates were measured and examined for traces of marginal chipping and drilling predation. Mytilus from surface samples ranged from 11.1 mm to 95.5 mm in length, and one of the four samples had a significantly different average shell length from the others. 114 H. trunculus were collected and measured. Hexaplex ranged from 22.1 mm to 86.1 mm and the mean shell length did not differ among samples, though they were overwhelmingly medium and large. Predation frequency (the ratio of successfully preyed upon bivalves to the total number of bivalves sampled) is high at the studied site (> 55%), and large gastropods preferred a chipping mode of predation to drilling, supporting earlier laboratory studies showing a preference for M. galloprovincialis and this predation strategy. Prey effectiveness (the ratio of failed predatory attacks to total predatory attacks) is also high (63.8%), and no evidence of a size refuge was found. Feeding in H. trunculus is highly facultative, calling for caution when using drill holes to estimate predation intensities; whenever possible, traces of multiple predation modes should be considered.  相似文献

Monthly sediment sampling was carried out from February 1999 to December 2001 at a 21-m deep station. Benthic diatom biomass and meiobenthic abundance were estimated together with abiotic parameters (PAR irradiance, temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen). During the three-year study average microphytobenthic abundance (ABU) and biomass (BIOM) were 4.7 ± 2.6 × 104 cell cm− 3 and 14.3 ± 8.1 µg C cm− 3, respectively, while the mean meiofaunal abundance was 923 ± 210 ind 10 cm− 2. The microphytobenthic community was mainly composed of Bacillariophyceae (99.3%) with a smaller percentage of phytoflagellates (0.7%). Among diatoms 39 genera were observed with a total of 110 taxa and 100 species. The main benthic diatom genera were Navicula, Paralia, Nitzschia and Diploneis. A total of 18 meiobenthic taxa were detected: 7 taxa belonged to permanent meiofauna (Nematoda, Copepoda Harpacticoida and their nauplius stages, Kinorhyncha, Turbellaria, Gastrotricha, Ostracoda and Acarina). The remaining 11 taxa belonged to temporary meiofauna (juvenile macrofauna: Polychaeta, Cumacea, Amphipoda, Isopoda, Nemertea, Decapoda, Sipunculida, Ophiurida, Gastropoda, Bivalvia and Cnidaria). Positive correlations between PAR and the biomass of the major diatom genera were revealed. Temperature did not seem to influence the microphytobenthic community as a whole, although we found statistically significant correlation between temperature and the genera Nitzschia and Amphora. Salinity showed significant positive correlation only with the genus Pleurosigma, in contrast, dissolved oxygen did not seem to affect the microalgal community. The major meiofaunal taxa were not correlated with abiotic variables, but were positively correlated with most diatom genera. Paralia was negatively correlated with the three main meiofaunal taxa. The three-point moving average applied to our biotic data allowed us to better the signal without the background noise which hid the actual variations of the studied communities. Applying the three-point moving average to the main taxa, it resulted that microphyto- and meiobenthos were in phase. The principal component analysis (PCA), constructed considering both biotic and abiotic variables, accounted for 58% of the total variance. PC1 axis explained 39.74% of the total variance and was correlated with Navicula, Diploneis and Nitzschia. PC2 axis explained 18.40% of the remaining variance and was correlated with Copepoda, Paralia and PAR. In contrast to 1999 and 2001, a mucilage event occurred in 2000, which resulted in the formation of a false bottom and a decrease in the abundance of microphyto- and meiobenthos.  相似文献

Daily variations of highly active bacteria in the Northern Adriatic Sea   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Nowadays, it is recognized that only a fraction of aquatic bacteriaare actively growing, but there is little information aboutthe factors constraining their metabolism. Marine bacterioplanktoncan rapidly modify their metabolic activity level in responseto environmental changes. In this study, we focused on the dailychanges in abundance and activity of active bacterial fractionover a 20-day period preceded by intense rainfalls which slightlymodified water column conditions. Cells capable of reducingthe membrane-penetrable dye 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazoliumchloride (CTC), estimated by epifluorescence microscopy, areconsidered very active (CTC+ bacteria). Total bacterial abundance(TBA) ranged from 0.8 to 2.4 x 109 cells L–1, whereasCTC+ bacteria were more variable (1.6–9.2 x 107 cellsL–1), accounting for 1.2–4.4% of TBA. Bacterialactivity (BA) quantified as the incorporation of [3H]-leucinevaried by more than one order of magnitude over the period (25.0–662.5pmol L–1 h–1). BA was strongly related to CTC+ bacteria, suggesting that they were mainly responsible for the bacterialcommunity metabolism. Nevertheless, cell-specific activity, scaled to only CTC+ cells, was very high, suggesting that afraction of cells not detectably CTC+ may be able to assimilate[3H]-leucine. The correlation between salinity and TBA, CTC+bacteria and BA supported the hypothesis of the active roleof freshwater input in enhancing cell activity. Our resultssuggest that freshwater inputs rather than phytoplanktonic bloomsare able to induce shifts in bacterial metabolism over a timescale of days in the area studied.  相似文献

The particulate organic carbon (POC), nitrogen (PN) and phosphorus (PP) vertical distribution along the water column and temporal variability in coastal and offshore waters of the Northern Adriatic Sea were related to the hydrodynamic conditions and biological processes. Fresh water inputs from the Po and Adige rivers enhance primary production, resulting in high POC, PN and PP concentrations at the surface. In offshore waters, POC and PN concentrations were about 3–4 times less than in the coastal waters, while PP were up to 10 times lower, highlighting a marked phosphorus depletion. In the bottom layer, the POC content decreases due to the strong density gradients which separate bottom waters with prevailing degradation processes. Short term 48 h-variability of POC, PN and PP in the coastal waters was determined to a great extent by variations in the spreading of river plumes at the surface and by nepheloid layers and resuspension processes in the bottom waters. The particulate matter in the Adriatic offshore waters is extremely depleted as regards particulate phosphorus and is characterised by Corg:P and N:P ratios higher than the Redfield ratio.  相似文献

Aims: This study identified and characterized coexisting Vibrios associated with haemorrhagic skin lesion bearing sand smelt fishes (Atherina boyeri) in north‐eastern Adriatic Sea. Methods and Results: Bacteria were isolated from external skin lesions of four samples, and representative morphotypes grown on thiosulfate–citrate–bile salt–sucrose agar were isolated. In total 25 isolates, presumptively assigned to Vibrio genus, were biochemically characterized and were grouped in 10 phenotypic profiles. Phenotypes were heterogeneously distributed among the diseased sand smelt analysed; only one phenotype was recovered from all the samples. Sequencing of 16S rRNA was performed to identify representatives of all phenotypes. Phylogenetic analysis using the neighbour‐joining method revealed six isolates clustered within the Vibrio harveyi group, three clustered with known Vibrio chagasii strains and three clustered with Listonella anguillarum. Conclusions: Vibrios with a broad phenotypic variability were found in the external lesions of diseased A. boyeri. In total three species of Vibrio were identified: V. harveyi showed the wider phenotypical and ribotypical heterogeneity while L. anguillarum shared similar biochemical characteristics with typical strains. Significance and Impact of the study: Previously unreported coexistence of potential pathogenic species colonizing diseased A. boyeri has ecological as well as epidemiological significance.  相似文献

The alien Asian gastropod Rapana venosa (Valenciennes 1846) was first recorded in 1973 along the Italian coast of the Northern Adriatic Sea. Recently, this predator of bivalves has been spreading all around the world oceans, probably helped by ship traffic and aquaculture trade. A caging experiment in natural environment was performed during the summer of 2002 in Cesenatico (Emilia-Romagna, Italy) in order to estimate consumption rates and prey preference of R. venosa. The prey items chosen were the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck 1819), the introduced carpet clam Tapes philippinarum (Adams and Reeve 1850), both supporting the local fisheries, and the Indo-Pacific invasive clam Anadara (Scapharca) inaequivalvis (Bruguière 1789). Results showed an average consumption of about 1 bivalve prey per day (or 1.2 g wet weight per day). Predation was species and size selective towards small specimens of A. inaequivalvis; consumption of the two commercial species was lower. These results might reduce the concern about the economical impact on the local bivalve fishery due to the presence of the predatory gastropod. On the other hand, selective predation might probably alter local community structure, influencing competition amongst filter feeder/suspension feeder bivalve species and causing long-term ecological impact. The large availability of food resource and the habitat characteristics of the Emilia-Romagna littoral makes this area an important breeding ground for R. venosa in the Mediterranean Sea, thus worthy of consideration in order to understand the bioinvasion ecology of this species and to control its likely further dispersal.  相似文献

A small near shore artificial reef was constructed in the Gulf of Elat, northern Red Sea at a depth of 22–24m. The colonization of fishes was monitored for a period of 728 days and a total of 94 species was recorded. Colonization was initially rapid. The first species to appear were Dascyllus trimaculatus and Chaetodon paucifasciatus (day 2). In the first seven months, a gradual increase in the number of species was observed, after which it leveled off. Subsequently, a reduction in the number of individuals increased diversity of the community, as measured by the Shannon & Weaver index. The low complexity of the major components of the artificial reef, in addition to its location on a muddy, silty substrate, resulted in a constant cover of fine grain particles which presumably discouraged settlement of invertebrates and small cryptic fish species on the artificial reef.  相似文献

The distribution of viral and other microbial abundances as well as the concentrations of dissolved DNA (D-DNA) along a trophic gradient in the northern Adriatic Sea were determined. Virus abundances, covering a range of 1.2 × 109 to 8.7 × 1010 liter-1 were on average 2.5-fold higher in eutrophic than in mesotrophic stations. A 2.5-fold enrichment was also measured for chlorophyll a concentrations, whereas the densities of bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates were only approximately 1.5-fold higher. The frequency of bacteria containing mature phage increased linearly with bacterial abundance. Assuming that mature phage is only visible during the last 14 to 27% of the latent period (L. M. Proctor, A. Okubo, and J. A. Fuhrman, Microb. Ecol. 25:161-182, 1993), we estimated that between 3.5 and 7.3% of the bacterial population was infected at mesotrophic stations versus between 7.0 and 19.5% at eutrophic stations, indicating that the bacterial mortality due to viral lysis might increase with the degree of eutrophication. The frequency of bacteria with mature phage and the burst size varied significantly with the bacterial morphotype; rod-shape cells, the most abundant morphotype, showed low infection rates but a high burst size. Concentrations of D-DNA varied significantly with season but not with trophic conditions. The estimated percentage of viral DNA on total D-DNA concentrations averaged 17.1% (range, 0.7 to 88.3%). Some kind of interaction between heterotrophic nanoflagellates and viruses is proposed. We conclude (i) that the significance of viruses varies with changing trophic conditions and (ii) that viral activity may play a significant role in food web structure under changing trophic conditions.  相似文献
