In attempting to determine the traits associated with invasive plant species, ecologists have often used species native to the invaded range as "control species." Because many native species themselves are aggressive colonizers, comparisons using this type of control do not necessarily yield information relevant to distinctions between invasive and noninvasive species. Here we implement an alternative study design that compares phenological, architectural, size, and fitness traits of several introduced invasive species to introduced noninvasive species within two genera of Asteraceae (Crepis and Centaurea). While there were many significant differences between the genera, there were few shared attributes among invasive or noninvasive congeners, even for traits as seemingly important as the number of inflorescences produced and the size of seed heads. Instead, the results suggest that differences in invasiveness between closely related species is better explained as the result of complex trait interactions and specific introduction histories.  相似文献

Summary Data sets from existing limnological surveys carried out on Australian zooplankton communities are examined, and co-occurrences of species in the centropagid copepod genera Boeckella and Calamoecia are tabulated. One experiment to determine the extent of mating errors among four species of Boeckella is performed. The data are examined with respect to the hypotheses that mating errors of similar sized copepods preclude co-occurrence and that competition for resources by similar size species preclude occurrence. It is concluded that neither hypothesis is valid, instead, that co-occurrence patterns among these Australian centropagids are a function of dispersal and colonization ability, and that zooplankton species composition in Australian lakes and ponds is probably in a state of disequilibrium.  相似文献

A survey of 55 osteological and myological features provided the basis for a phylogenetic analysis of the genera of the loricariid subfamily Hypoptopomatinae. Eleven genera are recognized. Aceslridium, Hypoptopoma, Microlepidogaster, Otocinclus (sensu stricto), Otothyris, Oxyropsis, Par otocinclus, Pseudotocinclus, Schizolecis and an unnamed new genus from Venezuela are each hypothesized as monophyletic on the basis of at least one uniquely derived, unreversed character stale. Pseudotothyris is diagnosed by one character state representing evolutionary convergence. Otocinclus , as presently defined (Isbriicker, 1980), is paraphyletic. Species related to Otocinclus vestitus , the type species, are more closely related to other Hypoptopomatinae than to other Otocinclus species. The hypothesis of generic relationships described herein is based on the consensus among three equally parsimonious trees of length 89 steps (c = 0.652). Distribution of character states on that tree and character-state evolution are discussed in terms of support for each lineage. Thirty-three trees were found one step longer (length = 90, c = 0.644) than the shortest, most parsimonious trees. The consensus among these 33 trees revealed two additional unresolved polychotomies involving members of the tribe Otothyrini and a clade composed of Hypoptopoma, Oxyropsis and Aceslridium. A preliminary framework for the analysis of historical biogeography of the Hypoptopomatinae is discussed.  相似文献

The family Comasteridae is divided into four subfamilies on the basis of syzygy positions in the division series and proximal arm. Use of this character results in major differences in perceived relationships between genera compared with that obtained when traditional subfamilial characters are used. The primary character previously used to determine comasterid subfamilies, cirrus ornamentation, is rejected as unimportant in recognizing taxa any higher than species. Seventeen genera, including a new genus from the tropical western Atlantic, and 99 species are now recognized in the Comasteridae. Four of these genera and five species cannot be placed within the newly diagnosed subfamilies. Characters of generic importance are considered to be pinnule comb form, mouth position and, to a lesser extent, the characters traditionally used to distinguish genera.  相似文献

Abstract The present study uses differences among frugivore faunas of the southern hemisphere landmasses to test whether frugivore characteristics have influenced the evolution of fruit traits. Strong floristic similarities exist among southern landmasses; for example, 75% of New Zealand vascular plant genera also have species in Australia. However, plants in Australia and South America have evolved in the presence of a range of mammalian frugivores, whereas those in New Zealand, New Caledonia and the Pacific Islands have not. In addition, the avian frugivores in New Zealand and New Caledonia are generally smaller than those of Australia. If frugivore characteristics have influenced the evolution of fruit traits, predictable differences should exist between southern hemisphere fruits, particularly fruit size and shape. Fruit dimensions were measured for 77 New Zealand species and 31 Australian species in trans‐Tasman genera. New Zealand fruits became significantly more ellipsoid in shape with increasing size. This is consistent with frugivore gape size imposing a selective pressure on fruit ingestability. This result is not a product of phylogenetic correlates, as fruit length and width scaled isometrically for Australian species in genera shared with New Zealand. Within‐genus contrasts between New Zealand and Australian species in 20 trans‐Tasman genera showed that New Zealand species have significantly smaller fruits than their Australian counterparts. Within‐genus contrasts between New Zealand and South American species in nine genera gave the same result; New Zealand species had significantly smaller fruits than their South American counterparts. No difference was found in fruit size or shape between New Zealand and New Caledonia congeneric species from 12 genera. These results are consistent with the broad characteristics of the frugivore assemblage influencing the evolution of fruit size and shape in related species. The smaller‐sized New Zealand frugivore assemblage has apparently influenced the evolution of fruit size of colonizing taxa sometimes within a relatively short evolutionary timeframe.  相似文献

The closely related fern generaHemionitis L. andGymnopteris Bernhardi are separated primarily on differences in leaf architecture and venation. Studies indicate that these characters are highly variable and unreliably diagnostic. Further, the type species of the two genera readily hybridize with each other. Spore morphology, as exhibited by SEM, does not support the traditional alignment of the species in these two genera: some species ofHemionitis andGymnopteris have the same rugose to papillate spores, while other species from both genera possess crested spores. The flavonoid chemistry of these taxa coincides with spore type, i.e., taxa from both genera which possess crested spores produce kaempferol and quercetin 3-0-glycosides, while species with tuberculate spores produce only quercetin 3,4′-0-glycosides. The spore and chemical data suggest a realignment of these taxa within a single genus, which would avoid the rather tenuous dependence on a single vegetative character for generic distinctions.  相似文献

The Cracidae are Neotropical galliform birds with 11 genera currently recognized. To investigate the questioned validity of Pipile Bonaparte, 1856 and the monotypic Aburria Reichenbach, 1853 as separate genera, we gathered data from 2727 bp of mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome b, ND2 and control region) and 151 osteological characters. Our phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences indicated that Aburria aburri is embedded within Pipile. Also, genetic distances between Aburria and any Pipile species are equivalent to the distances estimated for other congeneric cracid species, which genus status is not doubtful. Although the osteological characters do not have phylogenetic signal to solve the phylogenetic relationships at species level, five synapomorphies were found for Aburria and Pipile. Therefore, we suggest that Pipile should be merged with Aburria, which is the oldest described genus. We estimated that speciation in this group occurred in the Plio-Pleistocene, concordant with other birds, primates and rodents that have similar geographic distribution, and proposed a diversification hypothesis based on the occurrence of sea transgressions and the formation of the Amazon Lagoon. Therefore, we conclude that these palaeogeographic events may have contributed to Neotropical taxa diversification to a greater extent than previously suspected.  相似文献

Swab specimens were obtained from nasal, rectal, and preputial or vaginal areas of 37 grizzly and 17 black bears, captured during May to June of 1981 to 1983, to determine the types and frequency of predominant aerobic microflora. Bacterial genera most frequently isolated from bears were Escherichia, Citrobacter, Hafnia, Proteus, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus species, comprising about 65% of the isolates. Erwinia, Xanthomonas, Agrobacterium, Rhizobium, and Gluconobacter/Acetobacter were also isolated but at lower frequencies (less than 5%). Comparison of bacterial generic composition using similarity quotient values showed no appreciable differences between grizzly and black bear flora. Also, no outstanding differences in bacterial generic composition were observed among grizzly bear samples; however, differences were noted among black bear samples. Fungal genera most commonly encountered included Cryptococcus, Rhodotorula, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Sporobolomyces, and Candida. In general, the microflora of both bear types were marked by generic diversity and random distribution. The majority of microorganisms isolated from the plant samples in the study area were also found in bear samples. This observation and the presence of certain water and soil bacteria in samples from bears suggest that the predominant microflora of both grizzly and black bears were transient and probably influenced by their foraging habits and surrounding environments.  相似文献

The marmosets, tribe Callitrichini, are the most speciose clade in the subfamily Callitrichinae, containing 21 species. However, there is no consensus among molecular and morphological systematists as to how many genera should be recognized for the group. To test the morphological support for the alternative generic classifications, this study presents a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis. It is the first such analysis to include all 21 species and employ continuous and discrete osteological, pelage and tegument, karyological and vocal characters. This dataset was combined with nucleotide sequences from two mitochondrial and four nuclear regions. Separate analyses showed that, among morphological datasets, osteological characters were best at solving relationships at more inclusive levels, whilst pelage characters were most informative at the interspecific level. This suggests the presence of different transformation rates for the two character sets. When a single most parsimonious tree was obtained using the 83‐character matrix, three main clades were identified, supporting the division of the marmosets into three genera: Callithrix, Cebuella and Mico. The total evidence analysis that included an additional 3481 molecular characters corroborated most of the morphology‐based clades and also supported a three‐genus classification of the marmosets. This is the first morphological study to support an Amazonian marmoset clade (Cebuella Mico), which is also strongly supported in exclusively molecular phylogenies, and to synonimize Callibella under Mico.  相似文献

利用热变性温度法测得球壳孢目5属14种19个菌株DNAG十Cmol%的变化范围为48.08~53.7,平均值为51.12,与文献报道的丝孢菌类的平均值接近,也与子囊菌的平均值相差不大,提示该类群的种类及其与大多数丝孢菌间在系统演化上似具一定的同源性,与形态分类对半知菌的处理相吻合,也为其有性阶段大多属子囊菌这一事实提供了佐证;各属、种GC值接近,且相互间有交叉,种内菌株间差异小于2%,方差分析显示属间差异不显著,故认为GC含量分析不宜用于球壳孢目属、种级分类单位的划分,但可作为排除性指标辅助某些种类的否定性判定。  相似文献

The frogmouth taxon occurring on the Solomon Islands has been known as Podargus ocellatus inexpectatus , a subspecies endemic to four islands in the Solomon Islands of a species that also inhabits New Guinea and Australia. Our morphological, osteological and molecular studies support recognition of inexpectatus at the species level, and further reveal that it merits placement in its own genus, which we describe here. Compared with the two other extant podargid genera, inexpectatus does not seem to be more closely related either to Batrachostomus (confined to the Indo-Malayan faunal region) or to Podargus of the Papuan–Australian faunal region. We also review the specimen history of the Solomon Islands Frogmouth, and discuss what little is known about its ecology, natural history and distribution.  相似文献

Predation among aquatic invertebrate predators can have important effects on patterns of exclusion and coexistence in aquatic habitats, especially if these predators also act as intraguild predators. Such patterns may be explained by variation in predator foraging mode and in the extent and overlap of habitat use. Predaceous diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) are abundant in isolated bodies of water and are effective predators on many aquatic organisms, including other dytiscids. The under-investigated role of hunting behavior and habitat use in altering outcomes of predation under different plant densities may offer insights into patterns of coexistence among larval dytiscids. I performed experiments that quantified behavior of larvae of three common genera of dytiscids that share common prey and then measured predation among genera in the presence or absence of aquatic plants. Behavioral analyses concluded that there were significant differences in foraging modes, with Dytiscus primarily exhibiting sit-and-wait tactics, Graphoderus engaging in active, open water searching, and Rhantus displaying combinations of these behaviors. Predation among larvae was common and occurred when predators were larger than the prey, with no indication of prey preference. Incidence of predation among generic combinations depended on the presence of plants and appeared to be related to behavioral differences among genera. The presence or absence of plants and differences in larval behavior may help to mitigate predation by reducing negative interactions in natural aquatic systems. These results have implications for IGP interactions and may be one of the explanations for the observed richness of this group of predators within aquatic habitats.  相似文献

Talpidae consists of small insectivorous mammals exhibiting a range of environmental preferences. As all its members rely on a highly developed somatosensation system, they are an ideal study-group for investigating osteological correlates of the trigeminal nerve. We quantitatively studied cranial anatomy in 22 species of desman, shrew-mole, and true mole using microscopy and micro-CT imaging to investigate whether the infraorbital foramina within Talpidae is enlarged in semiaquatic forms and more broadly associated with habitat preference. We also investigated whether associated foramina were covariant. In order to account for a phylogenetic basis for any correlations, we reconstructed the best taxonomically sampled phylogeny for talpids in the literature to date, based on cytochrome b. Relationships among genera and species are broadly congruent with previous analyses; however, we report new placements for Neurotrichus gibbsii and Mogera tokudae. Although no correlation was found between habitat and the caliber of the V3 associated mandibular canal and foramen ovale, our results indicate that semiaquatic forms show larger infraorbital foramina in comparison to terrestrial species, and that the caliber of the sphenorbital fissure can also serve as a proxy for habitat preference. This work, therefore, supports the use of certain osteological features to infer habitat preferences in fossil species and indicates this can be achieved even when studying ecologically diverse, closely related species within the same family.  相似文献

Faunal assembly in chironomids was analysed using published data in the fauna of three rivers in southern England and of Great Britain as a whole. Two questions, both relating to the generic composition of local faunal assemblages, were asked: (i) to what extent are faunas from different sites within a single geographical area associated in terms of the occurrence of genera ('generic association'); (ü) given the total number of species observed, is the number of different genera represented ('generic spread') more than would be expected by chance. The latter question relates to the hypothesis that if interspecific competition is a strong organizing force of local faunal assemblages, species would be more likely to occur as widely spread out among different genera, thus decreasing overlap in resource use and hence the possibility of outright competition. Null models of species occurrence were constructed through Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate quantitatively these two questions. Generic association of faunal assemblages from three localities was statistically significant, though there was some variation among different subfamilies of Chironomidae. No evidence of generic diversification (more genera occurring in the fauna than expected by chance) was found. These results and the original questions were given critical considerations in the discussion.  相似文献

There remain some difficulties in delimitation of related genera or sibling species for cantharid beetles, because the traditionally taxonomic method and morphological characters have not been updated or introduced. In the present study, we firstly use the landmark-based geometric morphometrics to analyze and compare the hind wings of nine species belonging to three genera of Cantharinae to ascertain whether this approach may be used as a reliable method in the study of the taxonomy of this group. The results show that the shape differences of the hind wings among genera seem more variable than that within each genus, and the variations for each species are different from one another, as shown in the principal component analyses. And the canonical variates analyses show that there are significant differences among the genera and the species of each genus, which demonstrates that the hind wing shape can be diagnostic for both generic and specific identification of the cantharid beetles. This study sheds new light into clarifying the taxonomic uncertainties of Cantharidae, and lays a foundation for further studies on the evolution of the cantharid hind wing shape.  相似文献

Previous workers have used a conservative generic classification of the subfamily Amblyseiinae that treated most Australian Phytoseiidae as species in the genus Amblyseius Berlese. However, this lumping masks the occurrence of a number of genera recognised overseas, including some that contain important biological control agents. In this review, a key to the genera of Australian Amblyseiinae is provided and the Australian species in four amblyseiine genera are reviewed and keyed. Asperoseius Chant is represented by a single known Australian species, A. australiensis Fain and Krantz collected from a Culicoides midge in South Australia. Six species of Euseius Wainstein are recognised in Australia, including four endemics: E. dowdi (Schicha), E. elinae (Schicha), E. neovictoriensis (Schicha), and E. victoriensis (Schicha), and two Asia–Pacific species: E. noumeae (Schicha) and E. ovalis (Evans). Okiseius Ehara is represented in Australia by the previously described O. morenoi Schicha and O. domatorum (Schicha); the Asian species O. subtropicus Ehara (new record); and two new species, O. tribulation and O. cowbay described from tropical rainforest in Far North Queensland. Phytoscutus acaridophagus Collyer, a mite described from New Zealand, is reported in association with acarid mites ( Neotropacarus sp.) in Victoria and in Queensland.  相似文献

Individual preference for the use of one limb over the other to explore the environment or manipulate objects is common trait among vertebrates. Here, we explore the hypothesis that limb preference is determined by the engagement of a particular cerebral hemisphere to analyse certain stimuli. We recorded the eye and foot preferences of 322 individuals from 16 species of Australian parrots while investigating potential food items. Across all species, eye preferences explained 99 per cent of the variation in foot use in Australian parrots. The vast majority of species showed significant relationships between eye and foot preferences at the population level.  相似文献

The phylogeny of a representative group of genera and species from the Sapotaceae tribe Chrysophylleae, mainly from Australia and New Caledonia, was studied by jackknife analyses of sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA. The phylogeny conflicts with current opinions on generic delimitation in Sapotaceae. Pouteria and Niemeyera, as presently circumscribed, are both shown to be nonmonophyletic. In contrast, all species currently assigned to these and other segregate genera confined to Australia, New Caledonia, or neighboring islands, form a supported clade. Earlier classifications in which more genera are recognized may better reflect relationships among New Caledonian taxa. Hence, there is need for a revision of generic boundaries in Chrysophylleae, and particularly within the Pouteria complex, including Leptostylis, Niemeyera, Pichonia, Pouteria pro parte (the main part of section Oligotheca), and Pycnandra. Section Oligotheca have been recognized as the separate genus Planchonella, a monophyletic group that needs to be resurrected. Three clades with strong support in our jackknife analysis have one Australian species that is sister to a relatively large group of New Caledonian endemics, suggesting multiple dispersal events between this small and isolated tropical island and Australia. The phylogeny also suggests an interesting case of a relatively recent and rapid radiation of several lineages of Sapotaceae within New Caledonia.  相似文献
