It is known that heating the ram scrotum stimulates heat loss resulting in a decrease in body temperature and that during fever core temperature increases, but local scrotal thermoeffectors operate to maintain normal scrotal temperature. We have investigated whether scrotal warming influences core body temperature and the panting effector during fever generation. We measured rectal temperature, intrascrotal temperature, scrotal skin temperature and respiratory frequency in four adult Merino rams following intravascular injection of saline or lipopolysaccharide at an ambient temperature of 18-20 degrees C while scrotal skin temperature was maintained at 33 degrees C or elevated to 41 degrees C. Compared to maintaining normal scrotal temperature, heating the scrotum increased respiratory frequency and reduced rectal temperature by a similar amount following LPS as following saline. Fever was associated with decreased respiratory frequency compared to saline at both 33 and 41 degrees C scrotal temperature, suggesting that the fever was generated mainly by decreasing respiratory heat loss. We conclude that scrotal thermal afferent stimulation resulted in an offset for the set-point of body temperature regulation in both normothermic and febrile rams.  相似文献

The objectives of the present study were to determine changes with age and relationships among characteristics of the testicular artery, scrotal surface temperature, scrotal circumference, testicular consistency, seminal quality and sperm production. Beef bulls aged 6 mo (n=12), 1 yr (n=12), 2 yr (n=11), and 3 yr (n=12) were used in this study. The mean length of the testicular artery as well as the length, width, and surface area of a latex cast of the testicular artery all increased between 6 mo and 1 yr of age (P<0.01). Wall thickness of the testicular artery and testicular arterial-venous distance in the spermatic cord decreased with age and with proximity to the testicle (P<0.01). Distance from the testicular vascular cone to the inner surface of the skin at the top of the scrotal neck (primarily fat) increased between 1 and 3 yr of age (P<0.01), and was associated with an increased top scrotal surface temperature (P<0.09). Increased epididymal sperm reserves were associated with an increase in testicular consistency, scrotal circumference and scrotal surface temperature gradient, and with a decrease in testicular arterial wall thickness and testicular vascular cone to skin distance. A decrease in sperm defects was associated with an increase in testicular consistency and with a decrease in the average scrotal surface temperature. Increased sperm motility was associated with increased scrotal circumference and a decreased top testicular vascular cone to skin distance. These findings emphasize the importance of thermoregulation to sperm production and seminal quality.  相似文献

The right testis of 9 anaesthetized rams was removed from the parietal tunica vaginalis and replaced by a surrogate testis (water-filled balloon) through which water of known temperature was circulated. Thermistors were inserted in the surrogate testis, between the scrotal skin and parietal tunica vaginalis on the right side, and deep within the intact left testis. Scrotal surface temperatures over the surrogate and intact testes were measured by infrared thermography. Scrotal surface temperature was correlated (P less than 0.01) with both subcutaneous (r = 0.95) and surrogate (r = 0.91) testicular temperature. The temperature differential between scrotal surface (30.1 +/- 0.1 degrees C) and deep testicular temperature over the intact side (34.9 +/- 0.09 degrees C) was 4.8 degrees C at an ambient temperature between 24.0 and 26.6 degrees C. Contact with the scrotal skin is not required to measure scrotal surface temperature by infrared thermography. This, coupled with the close association between scrotal surface temperature and that of underlying structures, will enhance our ability to understand better testicular temperature regulation and scrotal/testicular function.  相似文献

Several species of bats contain pigment granules within the scrotal skin, tunica vaginalis, or tunica albuginea surrounding the testis and/or epididymis. Seventy-two species of bats, representing 49 genera were examined for the presence of such pigmentation. Histological, chemical and spectrophotometric tests were performed and confirmed the pigment as melanin. Melanin was found only in the families Pteropidae, Megadermatidae, Myzopodidae and Vespertilionidae. A strong correlation exists between scrotal pigmentation and roosting in locations where the bats are exposed to solar radiation. Melanin pigmentation in the scrotal region appears to be an adaption protecting male germinal tissue from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. In one species, Laoiu frons , melanin deposited within the scrotal skin appears to have a social/reproductive communication function.  相似文献

Unilateral abdominal cryptorchidism has usually been correlated with abnormalities in the spermatogenic activity of the scrotal testis. The present study describes the effects of unilateral abdominal cryptorchidism on the meiotic process in scrotal testes from postpubertal boars. The percentage of primary spermatocytes, secondary spermatocytes, and round spermatids was evaluated in testicular smears from scrotal testes of healthy boars and of right-sided unilateral abdominal cryptorchid boars. As compared to the scrotal testes of healthy boars, the scrotal testes of unilateral abdominal cryptorchid boars showed low transformation from primary to secondary spermatocytes (meiosis I), but normal transformation from secondary spermatocytes to round spermatids (meiosis II). The data obtained indicate that spontaneous unilateral abdominal cryptorchidism on the right side induced partial arrest of spermatogenesis at the primary spermatocyte stage that was attributed to anomalies in Sertoli-cell activity. Abnormal paracrine signals from altered Sertoli cells could have resulted in either disturbed mitosis, which led to the formation of spermatocytes with an abnormal DNA content, or abnormalities in the metabolic activity and the organization of the cytoskeleton of primary spermatocytes.  相似文献

Scrotal circumference has been recommended as a clinical test for predicting the fertility potential of yearling bulls. The objectives of this study were to determine if scrotal size of yearling bulls influences herd fertility and to investigate specific causal pathways. Calving records from 44 herds enrolled in the Beef Herd Improvement Plan were selected from the data base for 1984 to 1989. Logistic regression was used to model the event of calving within the first 3 wk of the calving season as a function of scrotal circumference, herd size, age and the interactions of scrotal circumference with age, scrotal circumference with herd size, and herd size with age and the random effects of herd. The odds of cows calving in the first 3 weeks of the calving season were lower in large herds (>30 vs 20 to 30 calves born per season) and with younger yearling bulls (12 to 15 vs. 16 to 18 months of age). Early calving was not associated with scrotal circumference, or the interactions scrotal circumference with herd size and scrotal circumference with age (p > 0.15). It was concluded that the female:male ratio and age of bull both affected the odds of a cow calving early, but neither of the associations was altered by selection for bulls with a larger scrotal circumference, and therefore scrotal circumference is not included in either of the 2 causal pathways.  相似文献

Data collected from 264 bulls of 13 beef breeds at the Michigan Bull Test Station was evaluated to determine if scrotal circumference (SC) adjusted to 200 d of age could be used to predict scrotal circumference at 1 yr of age. Scrotal circumference of each bull was recorded on arrival at the test station and at the time of breeding soundness examination (BSE) and was adjusted to 200 and 365 d of age, respectively. Bulls with adjusted SC>34.0 cm by 365 d of age averaged a larger SC at 200 d (P < 0.0001) and faster scrotal growth (P < 0.0001) than bulls with a 365 d adjusted SC /= 23.0 cm had a 95% probability of achieving SC > 34.0 cm by one year of age. Calves measuring < 23 cm at 200 d had a 54% probability of achieving > 34.0 cm scrotal size by one year. This information can contribute to the selection of breeding bulls that will achieve desirable scrotal size by one year of age.  相似文献

Patas monkeys ( Erythrocebus patas ) have aquamarine-coloured scrota, but data are unavailable regarding the potential connection between changes in scrotal coloration and testicular function. In the rhesus monkey ( Macaca mulatta ), seasonality of mating is accompanied by an intensification of red colour of the scrotum and a doubling of testicle size. A one-year study of male patas monkeys was undertaken in order to examine potential seasonal correlates of testicular function and scrotal colour. Increases in testosterone concentrations and testicular volume occurred during the mating season in adult males, but scrotal colour was fairly uniform throughout the year. Neither age, body weight, nor health influenced scrotal colour. These findings contradict the suggestion that the sex skin of seasonally breeding primates will become more intense during the mating season as a result of elevations in steroid hormone levels. Evidence from field studies in Africa suggest that the colour is part of a constellation of traits involved in male competition for mates.  相似文献

Normal range for scrotal circumference in Australian beef bulls was established using more than 300,000 measurements of breed, management group, age, liveweight, and scrotal circumference. The data used were derived from Australian bull breeders and two large research projects in northern Australia. Most bulls were within 250 to 750 kg liveweight and 300 to 750 days of age. The differences between breeds and variances within breeds were higher when scrotal circumference was predicted from age rather than liveweight, because of variance in growth rates. The average standard deviation for predicted scrotal circumference from liveweight and age was 25 and 30 mm, respectively. Scrotal circumference by liveweight relationships have a similar pattern across all breeds, except in Waygu, with a 50 to 70 mm range in average scrotal circumference at liveweights between 250 and 750 kg. Temperate breed bulls tended to have higher scrotal circumference at the same liveweight than tropically adapted breeds. Five groupings of common beef breeds in Australian were identified, within which there were similar predictions of scrotal circumference from liveweight. It was concluded that liveweight and breed are required to identify whether scrotal circumference is within normal range for Australian beef bulls that experience a wide range of nutritional conditions.  相似文献

We report the first case of adenomatoid tumor of the epididymis diagnosed in Senegal. A 41-years old man was referred to us for severe scrotal pain in the left side. Physical examination discovered a left scrotal mass. An epididymectomy was perfomed. Histological analysis of the surgical specimen with immunohistochemical staining confirmed an adenomatoid tumor. Tumors of the epididymis are frequently benign, therefore a conservative approach is recommended.  相似文献

The testis migrates to a scrotal location before birth. This physiological descent is associated with a reduction in the temperature of the testicular environment since the temperature of the scrotal cavity is lower than that of the body one. This leads to the etablishment of a themperature gradient between the testis and the body which already exists in prepubertal boys. In cases of testicular maldescent (cryptorchidism), the temperature of the testis in its cryptorchid location is much higher than that of the normally descended contrlateral testis. However, there are no data obtained from human studies to establish wether the increased temperature of a cryptorchid testis is responsible for the spermatogenic perturbations typically observed. Nor do we know wether the relocation of a cryptorchid testis to the scrotum permits re-establishment of a normal testicular temperature. Adult men with a history of cryptorchidism constitute about 10% of infertile men, and among these previously cryptorchid infertile men 45% have an abnormally elevated scrotal temperature. This abnormal increase in scrotal temperature is a negative risk factor for fertility: these men have smaller testicular volumes, a more severely impaired spermatogenesis and a higher prevalence of primary infertility than previously cryptorchid infertile than previously cryptorchid infertile men with normal scrotal temperature. However, data provided until now do not allow to know whether elevated temperature is due to the decreased testicular size (hypotrophy) or is a consequence of cryptorchidism per se.  相似文献

The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of scrotal insulation on semen samples collected from bulls on embryonic development after IVF. Semen samples were obtained and cryopreserved from four Holstein bulls before and after a scrotal insulation period of 48 h (Day 0). Three types of samples were used for IVF: (1) semen from the test bulls collected 5 d prior to scrotal insulation (pre-insult); (2) semen from Day 13 (2-week post-insult; 2-week PI); and (3) semen from Day 20 (3-week PI). After 18 h of sperm-oocyte co-incubation, the zygotes were cultured for 8 d when a developmental score (0=degenerate, 1=2-cell embryo through 5=blastocyst) was assigned to each embryo. The post-thaw morphological evaluation of sperm samples revealed a decrease (P<0.01) in the percentages of normal spermatozoa in the 3-week PI samples in comparison with the pre-insult samples for Bulls I and III (74-22.3% and 67.7-0.5 %, respectively). The percentage of vacuolated spermatozoa increased significantly for Bull II. The cleavage and blastocyst formation rates and embryo development scores were affected (P<0.01) by the interaction of bull by sample collection time. For Bulls I and III (severe responders) the scrotal insulation effects persisted from the time of cleavage through blastocyst formation. In contrast, the cleavage and blastocyst formation rates for Bulls II and IV were unaffected, despite high percentages of vacuolated spermatozoa present in the post-insult samples for Bull II. In conclusion, the use of scrotal insulation to elevate scrotal temperature was an effective method to obtain semen samples with high percentages of abnormal spermatozoa. The decrease in embryonic development after IVF when using spermatozoa with morphological abnormalities seemed to be multifaceted and related to changes in head morphology.  相似文献

In the present study, we have evaluated the influence of the location of the blood sampling in the spermatic vein on the steroid concentrations observed. Simultaneous blood sampling at two different points of the spermatic vein (iliac level and pampiniform plexus) was perfomed in the same patients during a surgical protocol for varicocelectomy. In order to further evaluate which of the two sampling points is more useful to investigate testicular secretion, we have performed both forms of sampling in 4 volunteers given an HCG stimulation 24 h before the surgical procedure. It was found that levels of testosterone (T) and 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) were higher in the pampiniform plexus (scrotal) than at the iliac sampling point (T scrotal 1,168.343 +/- 142.65 nmol/l, iliac 850.63 +/- 143.411 nmol/l, n = 21, p less than 0.01; 17-OHP scrotal 260.130 +/- 43.14 nmol/l, iliac 164.46 +/- 31.02 nmol/l, n = 17, p less than 0.01). This indicates that spermatic blood collected at the scrotal sampling point has received more blood coming from the testis than the blood collected at the iliac point. We did not observe significant differences in progesterone and delta 4-androstenedione (delta 4) levels between the two samplings. The T/delta 4 ratio was significantly lower in the iliac than in the scrotal sampling (T/delta 4 scrotal 31.420 +/- 6.69; iliac 15.41 +/- 3.84; p less than 0.05). After HCG stimulation, testosterone concentrations were higher in the pampiniform plexus than in the iliac sample. Levels of testosterone and insulin-like peptide 3 (INSL3) secretions in response to different doses of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in cultured interstitial cells were compared between retained and scrotal testes in dogs. Retained (n=10) and scrotal (n=9) testes were obtained from small-breed dogs. The testicular tissues were dispersed in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium with Ham's nutrient mixture containing 2000 PU/ml dispase II and 10% fetal bovine serum. The cells were plated with differing concentrations (0-10 IU/ml) of hCG for 18 h in multiwell-plates. Testosterone and INSL3 in the same spent medium were measured by enzyme-immunoassays (EIA). A new EIA with a reliable detection range of 0.025-5 ng/ml was developed in order to measure canine INSL3 in culture medium. Dose-dependent stimulation of testosterone by hCG was observed in the cells of both retained and scrotal testes. The incremental rate of testosterone secretion was significantly lower at 0.1, 1 and 10 IU/ml hCG in the cells of retained testes than in scrotal testes, however. INSL3 secretion was significantly stimulated at 10 IU/ml hCG relative to unstimulated controls comprising cells of scrotal testes; no such stimulation was observed in the cells of retained testes. At 10 IU/ml hCG, the incremental rate of INSL3 was significantly lower in the cells of retained testes than scrotal testes. These results suggest that LH-induced secretory testosterone and INSL3 responses are lower in the interstitial cells of retained testes than of scrotal testes. Furthermore, the high concentrations of LH may acutely stimulate INSL3 release in scrotal testes of dogs, but not in retained testes.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to study seasonal variations of thyroidal activity, serum testosterone concentration and seminal characteristics of two breeds of Iranian fat-tailed sheep. Eight 3 to 4-year-old rams of Ghezel and Mehraban breeds (4 rams/breed) were randomly selected from a flock of fertile rams. Semen was collected by using an artificial vagina, and blood samples were obtained via jugular vein. Seminal characteristics, scrotal length, width, and circumference, and blood parameters were measured at 3-week intervals. Time of the year significantly (P < 0.05) affected the volume of semen, sperm concentration, percent live sperm, percent normal sperm, total sperm number, seminal pH, seminal lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentration, scrotal circumference, scrotal width, and serum levels of testosterone, cholesterol, triiodothyronine (T(3)), tetraiodothyronine (T(4)), free T(4) index (FT(4)I), and TSH. Scrotal length was not affected by the time of sampling (P > 0.05). The effect of breed on the serum concentrations of hormones and cholesterol was not significant. Volume of semen, percent normal sperm, and total number of normal sperm were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in Mehraban but scrotal circumference, scrotal width and scrotal length were greater in Ghezel rams. Breedxtime interaction effect was significant for T(4), FT(4)I, sperm concentration, and total sperm number. The largest values for TSH, T(4), FT(4)I, testosterone, total sperm number, percent normal sperm, percent live sperm, sperm concentration, volume of semen and scrotal circumference were found from early summer to winter and the lowest values were recorded at the end of spring and in early summer. In both breeds, high and negative correlations (r = -0.7 to -0.8) were found between LDH levels in semen and percent live sperm, percent normal sperm and total sperm number (P < 0.01). It is unlikely that such variations in seminal quality would affect the fertility under natural mating.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine if frame size (height) is related to scrotal circumference. A total of 695 bulls (425 Angus, 65 Hereford, 70 Charolais, 135 Simmentals) were tested for postweaning gain in five stations over a period of 1 to 3 years. Variables examined included hip height, weight and scrotal circumference at beginning and completion of a 140-d feeding period. Correlations among these traits, adjusted for age (7 to 10 months at entry), year, station and management were estimated for each breed. Both height and weight were correlated positively with scrotal circumference at the start and the end of the test period in all four breeds. When height and scrotal circumference were adjusted for weight, correlations were negligible, with the exception of end-of-test values for Charolais bulls (-0.26). Negative correlations were obtained between the scrotal circumference at the start of the test and the change in height during the test after adjustment for weight in Angus bulls (-0.18) and in Charolais bulls (-0.15). These small negative phenotypic relationships indicate that a bull's fertility is not seriously reduced by large frame size at the completion of a feedlot performance test. For maximum fertility in bulls, scrotal circumference needs to be evaluated independently of frame size.  相似文献

A total of 764 breeding soundness examinations was conducted on beef bulls utilizing the method of examination and criteria for classifying bulls of the Society for Theriogenology. In addition to this examination each bull was subjected to scrotal circumference measurement and to weighing. Classification of the bulls according to breeding soundness potentials was as follows: 88% of the bulls were satisfactory potential breeders, 8% of the bulls were questionable potential breeders and 4% of the bulls were unsatisfactory potential breeders. The proportions of bulls in each classification; satisfactory, questionable, or unsatisfactory; were not different among the four breeds evaluated. The majority of bulls evaluated in this study were between 14 and 36 months of age and weighed between 900 and 1500 pounds. For the ages and weights evaluated, scrotal circumference measurement variances were not closely related to age and weight differences. There was a tendency shown for “Questionable” and “Unsatisfactory Potential Breeders” to have smaller scrotal circumference measurements. The study indicates that Angus, Charolais, Horned Hereford and Polled Hereford bulls of breeding ages and weights should have scrotal circumference measurements of at least 32 centimeters in order to be classified as “Satisfactory Potential Breeders”.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the long-term scar hypertrophy in the rabbit transplanted oral mucosa and scrotal skin with changed matrix environment, as well as the scar location expression, quantitative analysis of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) and biomechanical changes in the transplanted tissues. The split-thickness skin grafts were collected from the oral mucosas and scrotal skins of 30 male rabbits, and prepared into reelpipes for autologous transplantation into the rabbit back muscular tissues. Samples were collected to carry out elastic tensile mechanical detection and histological observation. The maximum longitudinal tensile displacement of scrotal skin before 8 weeks of transplantation was greater than that after 8 weeks of transplantation (P < 0.05). The expression intensities of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 in the oral mucosa and in scrotal skin at 2 W time point were higher than those at To time point (P < 0.05). The expression quantities of TIMP-2 in oral mucosa and scrotal skin during 8–24 W were higher than those of MMP-2 (P < 0.05). At 8 W time point, the TIMP-2/MMP-2 ratio in scrotal skin was higher than that in oral mucosa (P < 0.05). MMP-2 and TIMP-2 expression in normal oral mucosa and scrotal skin is weak, but their expression is remarkably up-regulated after 2 weeks of transplantation, revealing that scar formation was related to the high expression of MMP-2 and TIMP-2. At the 8th–24th weeks, the AOD values of TIMP-2 in oral mucosa and scrotal skin are apparently higher than those of MMP-2; moreover, the TIMP-2/MMP-2 ratio in scrotal skin at the 8th week was higher than that in oral mucosa, which can well explain the earlier scar formation in scrotal skin than in oral mucosa, and it also suggests that the different expression levels between TIMP-2 and MMP-2 may account for the important cause of scar formation.  相似文献

Numerous animal studies have shown that elevated testicular, scrotal or ambient temperature induces alterations in spermatogenesis that reduce fertility. In this study, fertilization rate and embryonic mortality were assessed in 636 ewes inseminated in each uterine horn with 50 × 106 cryopreserved spermatozoa from one of either four control rams or four rams submitted to a moderate (2°C), but repeated intermittent (16 hours/day for 21 consecutive days), elevation in their subcutaneous scrotal temperature by means of scrotal insulation. Pregnancy was assessed twice in each ewe at 17 days (blood plasma progesterone) and 65 days (ultrasound) after insemination. No differences were observed in the 17-day pregnancy rate between ewes inseminated with semen from control or experimental rams at up to 21 days of scrotal heating. In contrast, the rate of embryonic mortality between 17 and 65 days post-insemination was significantly higher after 4, 15 and 21 days of treatment in the experimental rams (78.7, 78.6 and 92.7 % respectively) compared to the control rams (55.0, 59.1 and 69.4 % respectively). These results indicate that ani intermittent slight increase in scrotal temperature induces a significant increase in embryonic mortality rate. As these changes were already apparent after only 4 days of scrotal heating, the effect must have ocurred either on the epididymis or on the spermatozoa stored in the epididymis  相似文献
