A technique has been developed to represent erythemally effective ultraviolet radiation exposure within a school environment. The technique models the erythemally effective exposure onto a horizontal plane representation of a mapped school environment located in Hervey Bay (25 degrees S, 153 degrees E), Australia. The input parameters used to model the ultraviolet exposures received within the school playground included the measured sky view, ground albedo and standing surface albedo. Estimates of the erythemally effective ultraviolet exposure received within the school playground during morning tea and lunch time meal breaks during a winter and summer school day are presented. The influence of tree shade and building structure was found to vary significantly with solar zenith angle modelled over the winter and summer school meal break times with horizontal plane exposures predicted to vary from between 0 and 7 SED at different locations within the playground. The technique presented provides a method that can be followed to examine the effect of surrounding buildings and surface structures of real environments on the predicted horizontal plane ultraviolet exposure.  相似文献

We used ultraviolet radiation dosimeters to investigate human exposure at two polar latitudes with a 24-h photoperiod: at Rothera Station (UK) (67°S) and at a field camp in the Haughton impact structure in the Canadian High Arctic (75°N). Mean personal UV radiation exposure in the Antarctic location was 4.3 times greater than that in the Arctic location, even in the absence of ozone depletion. More than zenith angle accounted for the higher UV exposure. Widespread snow and ice covers, and probably less atmospheric pollution, caused higher personal exposures. Although the mean exposures were higher in the Antarctic location, the mean exposure ratio in the Antarctic (0.20ǂ.09) was similar to the value measured in the Arctic (0.27ǂ.09) on clear days. We use the Antarctic ratio to provide quantitative estimates of UV-radiation exposure for workers at the Geographical South Pole for the winter solstice under a constant 24-h photoperiod. Exposure ratios can be used to translate measurements of UV radiation by horizontally fixed spectroradiometers into estimates of the mean exposures expected in populations at polar latitudes, although variations between individuals are large. The data have implications for determining the UV exposures of indigenous high-latitude populations.  相似文献

Despite continued advances in x-ray technology, evidence indicates that x-radiation injuries occur today to an excessive degree. These injuries have led to a progressive stiffening of standards of permissible exposure, especially in the past 15 years.Protection from radiation damage is logically based on dosimetry, preferably administered by a centralized service laboratory. The experience of two large hospitals in the control of x-radiation exposure is cited.Personnel exposed to x-radiation may be monitored by either pocket dosimeters of the ion chamber or electroscope type or by standardized film badge dosimeters. A recently developed film badge dosimeter that measures effective x-ray energy and radiation exposure in a quantitative manner is described.  相似文献

The aim of our study was to test the feasibility and reliability of personal dosimetry. Twenty-four hour exposure assessment was carried out in 42 children, 57 adolescents, and 64 adults using the Maschek dosimeter prototype. Self-reported exposure to mobile phone frequencies were compared with the dosimetry results. In addition, dosimetry readings of the Maschek device and those of the Antennessa DSP-090 were compared in 40 subjects. Self-reported exposures were not associated with dosimetry readings. The measurement results of the two dosimeters were in moderate agreement (r(Spearman) = 0.35; P = .03). Personal dosimetry for exposure to mobile phone base station might be feasible in epidemiologic studies. However, the consistency seems to be moderate.  相似文献

Currently, there is a major gap in the knowledge that is needed to optimize the beneficial effects related to ultraviolet (UV) radiation at wavelengths that induce vitamin D(3) synthesis (UV(D3)) compared to reducing the biologically damaging overexposure to UV radiation. The aim of this study was to investigate the use of diffuse (radiation that is scattered from all directions) UV radiation to optimize exposures to UV(D3) radiation and maximize the reduction of exposure to UVA radiation. Data on global and diffuse solar UV-radiation spectra were collected at 10-min intervals in the Southern Hemisphere in the late spring and summer from 1 November 2006 to 28 February 2007. For a solar zenith angle (SZA) of approximately 5 degrees , the observed maximum UV(D3) irradiances were 0.80 W/m(2) and 0.46 W/m(2) for global and diffuse UV radiation, respectively. The observed maximum UVA irradiances were 79.0 W/m(2) and 36.2 W/m(2) for global and diffuse UV radiation, respectively. For diffuse UV radiation, the maximum ratio of vitamin D(3) to UVA radiation was 1.75% at a SZA of approximately 10 degrees , whereas the maximum ratio for global UV was 1.27% at 10 degrees . For SZAs of 25 degrees and less, more UV radiation is in the wavelength region contributing to vitamin D(3) synthesis (UV(D3)) than in the UVA region for diffuse UV radiation than for global UV radiation.  相似文献

The research reported in this paper on the changes in absorbance and the calibration of a proposed UVA (320-400 nm) dosimeter have established the phenothiazine-mylar combination as a potential UVA dosimeter for population studies of UVA exposures. The change in optical absorbance at 370 nm was employed to quantify the UVA exposures. This change starts to saturate at a change in absorbance of approximately 0.3. This relates to solar UVA exposures at a sub-tropical site on a horizontal plane of approximately three to four hours. The shape of this calibration curve varies with the season. This can be overcome in the same manner as for polysulfone where the dosimeter is calibrated for the conditions that it will be employed to measure the UVA exposures.  相似文献

The European light dosimeter network of over 40 stations has been established in Europe and other continents equipped with three-channel filter dosimeters to measure solar radiation in three channels, UV-B (280–315 nm), UV-A (315–400 nm) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). The recorded data have been evaluated, and the monthly doses in all three channels show a strong latitudinal dependence from northern Sweden to the Canary Islands. There are a few remarkable exceptions such as the data recorded at the high mountain station on the Zugspitze (German Alps) and unequal doses at stations at comparable latitudes which indicate the impact of local weather conditions and mean sunshine hours. While generally peak values are recorded in the months of June and July, the UV-B maxima are shifted later into the year, which is due to the antagonistic functions of decreasing solar angles and increasing transparency of the atmosphere as the total column ozone decreases in the second half of the year for the Northern Hemisphere. This is supported by comparison with modelled total column ozone and satellite-based measurements. Also the ratios of UV-B:UV-A and UV-B:PAR as well as UV-A:PAR peak during the summer months, with the exception of the northernmost station at Abisko (north Sweden) where the UV-A:PAR ratio peaks in the winter months which is due to the specific photoclimatic conditions north of the polar circle. The penetration of solar radiation into the water column was found to strongly depend on the transparency of the water column. In Gran Canaria more than 10% of the surface UV-B penetrated to 4–5 m depth. The path of the solar eclipse on 11 August 1999 could be followed in several stations with different degrees of occlusion of the sun disk. The photosynthetic quantum yield was analysed in four common atlantic macroalgae, the Rhodophytes Gelidium arbuscula and Halopithys incurvus and the Phaeophytes Halopteris scoparia and Lobophora variegata in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands at their growth site. The fluorescence parameters were measured using a portable pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometer (PAM 2000) instrument and a diving PAM under water without removing the thalli from their growth sites. Solar radiation was monitored continuously above and under water during the whole experimental period using two three-channel dosimeters (European light dosimeter network; ELDONET) (Real Time Computer, M?hrendorf, Germany). These instruments measure solar radiation in three wavelength ranges, ultraviolet (UV)-A, UV-B and photosynthetic active radiation (PAR). In all four algae the effective photosynthetic quantum yield decreased significantly from the optimal values measured after dark adaptation due to exposure to 15 min solar radiation, but at least partially recovered subsequently in the shade within several hours. Increasing the exposure period to 30 min intensified the photoinhibition. In some algae no recovery was observed after this treatment and in others no significant recovery could be detected. Exposure to unfiltered solar radiation caused a significantly higher photoinhibition than PAR-only radiation or PAR plus UV-A. A substantial inhibition was found in all algae at their growth sites in the water column when the sun was at high angles, as measured with the diving PAM. A comparison of the effects of ultrasound produced by low- and high-frequency ultrasonic apparatuses upon biological systems is one of the basic problems when studying ultrasound cavitation effects. One possibility for how to compare these effects is the indirect method which uses well-known physical quantities characterizing the interaction of ionizing radiation with matter and which also converts these quantities to one common physical quantity. The comparison was performed with two methods applied to the chemical dosimetry of ionizing radiation. The first method employed a two-component dosimeter which is composed of 50 % chloroform and 50 % re-distilled water (i.e. Taplin dosimeter). The other method used a modified iodide dosimeter prepared from a 0.5 M potassium iodide solution. After irradiation or ultrasound exposure, measurable chemical changes occurred in both dosimeters. The longer the exposure, the greater the chemical changes. These effects are described by the relationship of these changes versus the exposure times in both dosimeters. The UZD 21 ultrasonic disintegrator (with a frequency of 20 kHz, 50 % power output) was used as a low-frequency ultrasound source, and the BTL-07 therapeutic instrument (with a frequency of 1 MHz and intensity of 2 W/cm2) was used as a high-frequency cavitation ultrasound source. For comparison, a 60 Co gamma source was applied (60 Co, gamma energies of 1.17 and 1.33 MeV, activity of 14 PBq). Results of this study have demonstrated that the sonochemical products are generated during exposure in the exposed samples of both dosimeters for all apparatuses used. The amount of these products depends linearly upon the exposure time. The resulting cavitation effects were recalculated to a gray-equivalent dose (the proposed unit is cavitation gray [cavitGy]) based on the sonochemical effects compared to the effects of ionizing radiation from the 60 Co source.  相似文献

As part of an historical cohort study to investigate the mortality experience of industrial workers exposed to chloroprene (beta-CD) and other substances, all available industrial hygiene exposure monitoring data were collected and summarized. From discussions with on-site industrial hygiene personnel, it was apparent that these data were not collected for epidemiological purposes and, therefore, their use in characterization of exposures was problematic as the data mostly pertained to samples collected to investigate the performance of specific tasks. These data were, however, informative for validating the exposure modeling process used to estimate historical exposures. The data summarized below clearly indicate that exposures to beta-CD were lowered across the time period of this study. Typically, the exposures recorded were less than the occupational exposure limits of the periods in which the exposures were recorded. Additionally, exposure measurements recorded in the recent past do not represent the exposure actually experienced by the worker as a strict personal protective equipment use program has been in place for the facilities studied since the mid-1980s.  相似文献

In order to investigate the influence of solar radiation on vitamin D status and its association with different health outcomes in population based studies, appropriate estimates of the subjects’ UV radiation exposure are needed. This unique study describes a method that estimates the daily number of vitamin D effective hours (VD-hours) at arbitrary ground locations throughout the period 1957–2002. The method is particularly suited for large-scale prospective epidemiological studies with questionnaire-based information on sun exposure, and where blood measures of vitamin D status are not available. The model takes total cloud cover fraction and total ozone column at noon as input from the ERA-40 data series (i.e. the 40 + year European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis archive). By comparing the model results against high accuracy measurements at two different locations in Norway, we found the method for estimating the number of VD-hours to be accurate within 2.5 ± 7% or better for moderate solar zenith angles (< 65°). For higher solar zenith angles (> 65°) the results are more variable, but the contribution to a population’s vitamin D level from solar radiation when the sun is this low in the sky is rather small. Previous studies using thermal imaging have suggested that face and body temperature increase during periods of sexual arousal. Additionally, facial skin temperature changes are associated with other forms of emotional arousal, including fear and stress. This study investigated whether interpersonal social contact can elicit facial temperature changes. Study 1: infrared images were taken during a standardized interaction with a same- and opposite-sex experimenter using skin contact in a number of potentially high-intimate (face and chest) and low-intimate (arm and palm) locations. Facial skin temperatures significantly increased from baseline during the face and chest contact, and these temperature shifts were larger when contact was made by an opposite-sex experimenter. Study 2: the topography of facial temperature change was investigated in five regions: forehead, periorbital, nose, mouth and cheeks. Increased temperature in the periorbital, nose and mouth regions predicted overall facial temperature shifts to social contact. Our findings demonstrate skin temperature changes are a sensitive index of arousal during interpersonal interactions.  相似文献

PurposeA novel position-sensitive mega-size polycarbonate (MSPC) dosimeter is introduced. It provides photoneutron (PN) dose equivalent matrix of positions in and out of a beam of a high energy X-ray medical accelerator under a single exposure.MethodsA novel position-sensitive MSPC dosimeter was developed and applied. It has an effective etched area of 50 × 50 cm2, as used in this study, processed in a mega-size electrochemical etching chamber to amplify PN-induced-recoil tracks to a point viewed by the unaided eyes. Using such dosimeters, PN dose equivalents, dose equivalent profiles and isodose equivalent distribution of positions in and out of beams for different X-ray doses and field sizes were determined in a Siemens ONCOR Linac.ResultsThe PN dose equivalent at each position versus X-ray dose was linear up to 20 Gy studied. As the field size increased, the PN dose equivalent in the beam was also increased but it remained constant at positions out of the beam up to 20 cm away from the beam edge. The jaws and MLCs due to material differences and locations relative to the target produce different PN contributions.ConclusionsThe MSPC dosimeter introduced in this study is a perfect candidate for PN dosimetry with unique characteristics such as simplicity, efficiency, dose equivalent response, large size, flexibility to be bent, resembling the patient’s skin, highly position-sensitive with high spatial resolution, highly insensitive to X-rays, continuity in measurements and need to a single dosimeter to obtain PN dose equivalent matrix data under a single X-ray exposure.  相似文献

The physiological effects unique to solar ultraviolet (UV)-B exposure (280-315 nm) are difficult to accurately replicate in the laboratory. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the sodium urate anion in a liquid filter that yields a spectrum nearly indistinguishable from the solar UV-B spectrum while filtering the emissions of widely used UV-B lamps. The photochemical properties and stability of this filter are examined and weighed against a typical spectrum of ground-level solar UV-B radiation. To test the effectiveness of this filter, light-saturated photosynthetic oxygen evolution rates were measured following exposure to UV-B filtered either by this urate filter or the widely used cellulose acetate (CA) filter. The ubiquitous marine Chlorophyte alga Dunaliella tertiolecta was tested under identical UV-B flux densities coupled with ecologically realistic fluxes of UV-A and visible radiation for 6 and 12 h exposures. These results indicate that the urate-filtered UV-B radiation yields minor photosynthetic inhibition when compared with exposures lacking in UV-B. This is in agreement with published experiments using solar radiation. In sharp contrast, radiation filtered by CA filters produced large inhibition of photosynthesis.  相似文献

The nuclear medicine department of Ibn Sina hospital was created in 1965. Its first location was in radiology department, and then it was transferred in 1977 to the old emergency unit. The conception was not originally dedicated for a nuclear medicine department. To reassure the medical staff about their exposition during radiopharmaceutical manipulation, a dosimetric study was performed in collaboration with the National center of radiation protection (CNRP). Dosimetric monitoring was conducted for 3 months with the use of passive thermoluminescent dosimeters, (Harshow, 6600 plus), covering all categories of staff. The administration of 153 Samarium has been also studied. Other cases of people concerned our study: a pregnant woman doctor, whose exposure of the unborn child must be reduced as much as possible, and a woman from a private company, working occasionally in the department. To control the conditions imposed on all activities requiring exposure to ionizing radiation, we evaluated the dose at the extremities of operators with the use of ring dosimeters (Harshow 6600 plus) and the dose on the ambient environment of staff. This experiment has shown exposure levels below legal limits, without been negligible for some workstations. Technicians equivalent doses results justify the wearing of dosimeter rings as a complementary dosimeter in nuclear medicine department. Finally, monitoring ambient dosimetry showed that the environment measurements are in keeping with national and international norms. The Medical staff was very interested by this study, which demonstrates that radiation protection standards are respected through awareness, basic training, continuing education and information. The first author is particularly involved in the practical procedures in order to respect radiation protection recommendations for restraining staff annual chest and extremities dosimetry figures within regulations values.  相似文献

Most of the population receive their nutritional vitamin D requirements through exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation, with cutaneous synthesis estimated to provide 80-100% of the vitamin D requirements of the body. However, little is understood about the basic interaction of sunlight (UV) exposure and the subsequent photobiology and photochemistry of vitamin D production in humans. Low vitamin D (blood serum 25[OH]D) status has been linked to the development of a surprisingly wide range of diseases. Epidemiological data and animal studies indicate that low vitamin D is linked to rickets, bone mass loss, multiple sclerosis, hypertension, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, insulin dependent diabetes and schizophrenia. Importantly some this emerging research associates such diseases with location and subsequent ultraviolet radiation exposures. This paper overviews concepts important to consider when assessing the impact of location and UV exposure on vitamin D synthesis.  相似文献

PurposeIndividual dosimetry is undoubtedly one of the best methods of assessing the exposure of personnel to ionizing radiation, however in case of nuclear medicine, the method applied to measure the dose does not always present a picture of the worker’s actual exposure. The highly non-homogeneous dose distribution on the hand means that the ring dosimeter, routinely used to measure the Hp(0.07), provides only approximate dose values received by fingertips, the body part most exposed to ionizing radiation. This paper is an attempt to answer the question whether the wrist dosimeter used as a replacement for the ring dosimeter is able to provide information on doses for the most exposed fragments of the hand of an employee during handling procedures with the use of radiopharmaceuticals.MaterialsThroughout measurements performed in five nuclear medicine facilities, high-sensitivity thermoluminescent detectors were used.ResultsCorrection coefficients have been determined, which constitute an amendment to be made to move from the dose recorded by the wrist dosimeter to the doses received by the most exposed hand fragments. The fingertips received on average 25 times higher doses, compared to the values recorded by the wrist dosimeter.ConclusionsA wrist dosimeter can be used to measure the Hp(0.07) in nuclear medicine, including as a gauge of the most exposed parts of the hand – the fingertips. However, the applicability of correction coefficients makes it necessary to ensure a stable position of the wrist dosimeter during routine procedures.  相似文献

The spectral UV and the cloud cover were measured at intervals of 5 min with an integrated cloud and spectral UV measurement system at a sub-tropical Southern Hemisphere site for a 6-month period and solar zenith angle (SZA) range of 4.7° to approximately 80°. The solar UV spectra were recorded between 280 nm and 400 nm in 0.5 nm increments and weighted with the action spectra for photokeratitis and cataracts in order to investigate the effect of cloud cover on the horizontal plane biologically damaging UV irradiances for cataracts (UVBEcat) and photokeratitis (UVBEpker). Eighty five percent of the recorded spectra produced a measured irradiance to a cloud free irradiance ratio of 0.6 and higher while 76% produced a ratio of 0.8 and higher. Empirical non-linear expressions as a function of SZA have been developed for all sky conditions to allow the evaluation of the biologically damaging UV irradiances for photokeratitis and cataracts from a knowledge of the unweighted UV irradiances.  相似文献

The synthesis of vitamin D in skin is a two-stage process that begins with the production of previtamin D after irradiation of 7-dehydrocholesterol by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. A number of personal and environmental factors control the probability of a suitable UV photon reaching a molecule of 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin. These are astronomical factors that govern the solar zenith angle (SZA), and the local state of the atmosphere, determining the available solar UV radiation; skin pigmentation and age, determining competing absorbers of UV radiation and available 7-dehydrocholesterol; individual behaviour in the local surroundings, determining exposure of unprotected skin to available UV radiation. The only one of these influences that can be determined unequivocally for any situation is the SZA. The other influences must be considered either as individual case studies, or be represented by "typical" and "idealised" situations for the weather, skin and behaviour. At large SZAs there is insufficient solar UV radiation to initiate significant vitamin D synthesis. At smaller SZAs assessment of solar exposure necessary for vitamin D synthesis can only be indicative and application of any such assessment necessarily requires awareness of both self- and the local environment.  相似文献

This paper presents a methodology for the computer synthesis of realistic faces capable of expressive articulations. A sophisticated three-dimensional model of the human face is developed that incorporates a physical model of facial tissue with an anatomical model of facial muscles. The tissue and muscle models are generic, in that their structures are independent of specific facial geometries. To synthesize specific faces, these models are automatically mapped onto geometrically accurate polygonal facial representations constructed by photogrammetry of stereo facial images or by non-uniform meshing of detailed facial topographies acquired by using range sensors. The methodology offers superior realism by utilizing physical modelling to emulate complex tissue deformations in response to coordinated facial muscle activity. To provide realistic muscle actions to the face model, a performance driven animation technique is developed which estimates the dynamic contractions of a performer's facial muscles from video imagery.  相似文献
