Liverworts are generally regarded as rare elements in Palaeozoic floral assemblages. However, a focus on dark gray to black shales and siltstones in the Middle–Late Devonian Catskill Delta of eastern New York shows that liverworts are locally quite common as well-preserved, apparently parautochthonous specimens in thin, lenticular, dark gray–black shale and siltstone lenses. These lenses are either dysoxic–anoxic lacustrine or estuarine facies deposited under oxygen-stratified water masses or rapidly deposited flood plain deposits that were not oxidized after deposition. Carbonized remains of the upper Middle Devonian (Givetian) liverwort Metzgeriothallus sharonae sp. nov. are locally common in these lenses. Well-preserved thalli (gametophytes) are only evident by projecting polarized light on the shale and siltstone surfaces. An associated sporophyte capsule is the first evidence of a reproductive structure in a Devonian liverwort. Metzgeriothallus sharonae sp. nov. is the oldest known liverwort. The age of the new species helps recalibrate chloroplast DNA studies that have led to proposals of the timing of liverwort diversification by showing that the evolutionary separations of the Jungermanniopsida and Marchantiopsida and of the Metzgeriidae and Jungermanniidae [previously thought to be Late Devonian and Late Carboniferous, respectively] were no younger than late Middle Devonian.  相似文献

Twelve species of the genus Cecidomyia have been reported from North America andEurasia. They are known as pine resin midges inhabiting mainly the pines, also spruce andfir. The larvae fecd on pitch and cause extensive primary damage to the hosts. The new res-in midge species here dealt with is known so far only from Jiangbian Forestry Bureau dis-trict, Yunnan.  相似文献

A new genus and species Amplectosporangium jiangyouense, is described from the Pingyipu Formation (Siegenian) of the Lower Devonian in Jiangyou district, Sichuan, China. The plant consists of naked dichotomizing erect axes with terminal fertile branch-systems. Sporangia are oval-shaped each with a short stalk and are arranged along the inner side of dichotomized axes in single row. By comparison with other known Devonian plants the genus is considered to represent a new morphological type of early land plants. Based on the theory of the telomic origin of the ovular integument, the plant may represent an early stage in the evolution of integument.  相似文献

The Lower to Middle Devonian Santa Lucia Formation of NW Spain contains a rich and well-preserved bryozoan fauna. An assemblage containing 14 species is described from two localities in Cantabrian Mountains, Abelgas, and Paradilla. One new genus with one new species is described: Isostylus abelgasensis n. sp. n. gen. Another two new species have been found: Microcampylus minor n. sp. and Acanthoclema parvula n. sp. Additionally, the following species were identified: Cyclotrypa communis (Ulrich 1890), Fistuliphragma gracilis Ernst 2008a, Leioclema attenuatum Duncan 1939, Hemitrypa cf. tenella Barrande in Počta 1894, Fenestella aff. parallela Hall 1881, Anastomopora adnata (Hall 1883), Semicoscinium rhombicum Ulrich 1890, Quadrisemicoscinium discretum (Prantl 1932). Three species are described in open nomenclature: Trepostomata sp. indet.1 and 2, and Semicoscinium sp. The described bryozoan fauna shows connections to the Lower Devonian of Bohemia, and to the Middle Devonian of Rhenish Massif and North America.  相似文献

Nanogomphodon wildi n. gen., n. sp. is based on a tiny lower postcanine tooth from the lower Lettenkeuper (Lower Keuper or Erfurt Formation; Ladinian) of Michelbach an der Bilz (Baden-Württemberg). It represents the first record of a traversodont cynodont from the Middle Triassic of Europe and exhibits a distinctive combination of dental features. Along with recent discoveries of other traversodont taxa from the Upper Triassic of eastern North America,Nanogomphodon indicates the existence of a distinct lineage of these cynodonts in the Northern Hemisphere.   相似文献

A small tube-dwelling organism is interpreted as living in the sediment. This life habit is inferred from the difference between lined burrows and tubes and between soft and rigid tubes. Lamellar extensions of the body-wall may have provided irrigation for the vermiform part of the body. The gaping aperture lacks an operculum and may have been open permanently; the apertural rim was strengthened by spicules. The specimen lacks segmentation and is thus not an annelid worm. Considering the theoretical suitability of the crinoid “forest” in the Hunsrück sea for such worms, the absence of Annelida is curious.  相似文献

A new deep-sea species of chaetognaths, Eukrohnia geptneri, from the Northwestern Pacific is described; the young were registered in the epipelagic zone, while the adult specimens were found in deep depths of the Japanese Depression. Morphologically, this species is close to E. bathyantarctic; however, it differs from the latter in a series of characteristics. The diagnosis of the new species, drawings, and identification keys for the world fauna of the genus Eukrohniaare presented. A hypothesis is proposed on the origin of bathypelagic species inhabiting Antarctic waters, the chaetognath Eukrohnia bathyantarcticaDavid, 1958, from the species E. geptnerisp. nov.  相似文献

A machaeridian, Lepidocoleus hohensteini sp. nov., is described from the Hunsrück Slate (Lower Emsian) of Germany. The available material includes a unique example preserving evidence of the soft tissues, only the second machaeridian specimen to do so and the first lepidocoleid. This specimen shows that the plates are attached to alternate segments in the trunk. The morphology is consistent with an annelid affinity of the Lepidocoleidae and confirms the unity of the Machaeridia. This discovery adds an important group to the known diversity of this famous late Palaeozoic marine Konservat-Lagerstätte.  相似文献

Copitarsia gibberosa n. sp. is described from Chile and Argentina. Morphological characters are discussed to differentiate it from Copitarsia decolora (Guenée), Copitarsia incommoda (Walker), and Copitarsia corruda (Pogue & Simmons). Copitarsia corruda has its status revised based on CO1 and morphology. Copitarsia paraturbata Castillo & Angulo is a new synonym of C. incommoda based on morphology. Copitarsia uncilata Burgos & Leiva is a new synonym of C. decolora based on morphology. A review of recent literature revealed a misunderstanding of the complex of species related to C. decolora, and these papers are evaluated and species are identified. Host plant utilization is discussed between C. decolora and C. corruda. Adults and male and female genitalia are illustrated to differentiate between the species in the C. decolora species complex. Keys to male and females based on genitalic morphology are given. Distribution maps of collected specimens are provided.  相似文献

For the first time, fossils of unquestionable eurypterid origin are documented from the renowned Lower Devonian Hunsrück Slate Lagerstätte in southwestern Germany. The gnathobase of a coxal plate and a body segment can be attributed to pterygotid eurypterids, probably to Jaekelopterus rhenaniae. These body parts from the Hunsrück Slate once more confirm the extraordinary large size that could be attained by this Rhenish eurypterid. Based on the usual occurrence in marine–terrestrial transitional facies elsewhere in the Rhenish Devonian, rareness in the Hunsrück Slate, and poor preservation, the Hunsrück Slate pterygotid remains are most probably allochthonous, and eurypterids are considered nongenuine elements of the ‘Hunsrück Slate biota.  相似文献
