Effects of gonadal steroids on conspecific odor preference for either (1) sexually active male or active female, (2) sexually active or gonadectomized (gdx) males, (3) sexually active or gdx females, and (4) gdx males or gdx females were determined in male and female rats in a three-chamber apparatus. For the first test, gdx females were made sexually active by treatments with estradiol benzoate (EB) and progesterone (P), and sexually active males were selected by prior screening. Sexually active males and females preferred opposite-sex odor over same-sex odor. Odor of sexually active opposite-sex conspecifics was preferred over that of inactive ones. Immediately after the completion of the first test, sexually active males were gdx and females were left without hormonal treatment. Second and third tests were carried out 2 and 5 weeks after the first test. In the second test, gdx males preferred odor of sexually active males rather than that of receptive females (male-directed preference); in the third test, both males and females showed no preference when tested with four stimulus pairs. The final tests were carried out in gdx males with EB and P, and gdx females with 2-week exposure to testosterone (T). Males with EB and P showed a male-directed preference again, whereas T-treated females kept their own female preference. Injection of EB alone to gdx males did not induce any preference. The present study clearly demonstrated sex difference in conspecific odor preference. Although both male and female preferences depend on their circulating sex steroids, the direction of male preference is more susceptible to their hormonal states, compared to that of females.  相似文献

Testosterone-dependent olfactory signals emitted by male are well known to accelerate female puberty in mice (Vandenbergh effect). However, it remains unclear whether these chemosignals also influence adult expression of male-directed odor preference. Therefore, we exposed female mice to intact or castrated male bedding (vs clean bedding as control) during the peripubertal period (postnatal day (PD) 21–38) and measured male-directed odor preference in adulthood. At PD45 or PD60, females exposed to intact male odors, and thus showing puberty acceleration, preferred to investigate odors from intact males over females or castrated males. Females exposed to castrated male odors did not show puberty acceleration but preferred male (intact or castrated) over female odors. Finally, control females did not show any odor preference when tested at PD45, although a preference for male odors emerged later (PD60). In a second experiment, females that were exposed to intact male odors after pubertal transition (PD36–53) also preferred intact male over castrated male odors. In conclusion, our results indicate that peripubertal exposure to male odors induced early expression of male-directed odor preference regardless of puberty-accelerating effect and that induction of male-directed odor preference is not specific to the peripubertal period.  相似文献

Seasonal differences in behavioral interactions between wild-caught adult and juvenile meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, were measured in paired encounters in a neutral arena. Seasonal differences existed in the adult-juvenile paired encounters. Early in the breeding season (May—Aug.) paired encounters between adult males and juvenile males were more agonistic than other adultjuvenile pairings. Late in the breeding season (Sep.—Dec.) adult female-juvenile male encounters were more agonistic than other adult-juvenile pairings. Odor preferences of juveniles were determined in a Y-maze olfactometer. Juveniles did not demonstrate seasonal differences in odor preference. Males preferred the odor of adult females to the odor of adult males or their own odor. Females preferred the scent of an adult male to the odor of an adult female, but did not show a preference between their own odor and the odor of an adult male or an adult female. The results are consistent with hypotheses that state in a promiscuous species, females should be philopatric, and males should disperse as a consequence of adult competition. The data suggest that agonistic behavior by adults may regulate juvenile dispersal and recruitment, and define the composition of overwintering groups.  相似文献

Speciation by sexual selection is commonly modeled as the divergent co-evolution of male signals and female preferences in geographically isolated populations. Upon secondary contact, females fail to recognize divergent males as suitable mates and exhibit a strong preference for their own type. The result is behavioral isolation and, if behavioral isolation is strong enough, there is an absence of gene flow between two species. Growing evidence of both mutual and male choice challenges the conventional role of females as primary regulators of species boundaries; however, to date, few studies have explicitly compared males and females for conspecific preference. The relative contribution of the two sexes to species boundaries therefore remains poorly understood. We examined the strength of preference for conspecifics in both males and females using two closely related species of darters. Males in these species exhibit substantial parental investment; therefore, we hypothesized that selection for male choosiness would result in male preference for conspecifics comparable to females’. Results show that females exhibited strong and significant preference for conspecific males; whereas, male preference for conspecific females was highly variable. Some males showed a strong preference for conspecifics while others preferred heterospecifics or showed no preference, resulting in a non-significant mean preference for conspecifics. Therefore, despite considerable parental investment by males in this system, our results suggest females play a larger role in regulating species boundaries.  相似文献

A habituation-discrimination technique was used to demonstrate that male and female prairie voles can discriminate individual differences in the odours of soiled shavings and urine from male and female conspecifics. A second experiment, employing a Y-maze, showed that females significantly preferred the odours of their mate over those of either another mated male or an unmated male. Males preferred their mate's odours to those of other mated females but showed no significant preference between the odours of their mate and those of a virgin female. A third experiment demonstrated that, over a 10-h period, females built nests and/or stayed preferentially on the side of a Y-maze containing their mate's odours. Likewise, males preferentially built nests in their mate's side compared to the side containing odours from a virgin female. However, although the same trend was present when mate odours were paired with odours from another mated female, the preference was not statistically significant. Taken as a whole, these results indicate that mate recognition may be an important of individually distinctive odours in this species.  相似文献

Half a century has passed since the first report of the influence of odors on mice. Odors are known to influence behavior (signaling effect) and affect the physiology (primer effect) of mice. This review focuses on summarizing the primer effects found so far in female and male mice. Odors from conspecifics of the opposite sex had the tendency to enhance reproductive activities, whereas odors from conspecifics of the same sex diminish them. Only 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, one of the odor components identified in group-housed females, has been reported to have a suppressive influence on both males and females by lowering reproductive activities. Studies showed progress from the discovery of phenomena to the identification of odor components that cause such changes in reproductive organs and related neuroendocrinological changes. Compared to studies on the mechanisms of primer effects in females, the mechanisms in males are not yet clarified, and detailed studies on effects on the reproductive organs are still in primitive stages especially for males. Hypotheses on the influence of changes in the concentration of testosterone, estrogen, and prolactin on spermatogenesis and sperm maturation after exposure to odors are discussed.  相似文献

Animals often use different sensory systems to assess different sexually selected signals from potential mates. However, the relative importance of different signals on mate choice is not well understood in many animal species. In this study, we examined the relative importance of male olfactory and visual cues on female preference in the guppy Poecilia reticulata. We used digitally modified male images to standardize visual stimuli. We found that, regardless of whether females were presented without male visual stimuli or with identical male visual stimuli, they preferred stimuli with the odor of males to those without. However, when females were allowed to choose between dull male visual stimuli with male odor, and brightly colored male visual stimuli without male odor, there was no clear preference for either. Some females preferred the dull male visual stimuli with male odor, whereas some other females preferred the brightly colored male visual stimuli without male odor. These results indicate that the relative importance of olfactory and visual cues in female mate preference varied between individuals.  相似文献

Host behaviour towards infectious conspecifics is a crucial yet overlooked component of pathogen dynamics. Selection is expected to favour individuals who can recognize and avoid infected conspecifics in order to reduce their own risk of infection. However, evidence is scarce and limited to species employing chemical cues. Here, we experimentally examine whether healthy captive house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) preferentially forage near a same-sex, healthy conspecific versus one infected with the directly transmissible pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), which causes lethargy and visible conjunctivitis. Interestingly, male house finches strongly preferred feeding near diseased conspecifics, while females showed no preference. This sex difference appeared to be the result of lower aggression rates in diseased males, but not in females. The reduced aggression of diseased males may act as an ‘evolutionary trap’ by presenting a historically beneficial behavioural cue in the context of a new environment, which now includes a recently emerged, potentially fatal pathogen. Since MG can be directly transmitted during feeding, healthy males may inadvertently increase their risk of contracting MG. This behaviour is likely to significantly contribute to the continued persistence of MG epidemics in wild populations.  相似文献

We previously found that both male and female aromatase knockout (ArKO) mice, which cannot synthesize estrogens due to a targeted mutation of the aromatase gene, showed less investigation of volatile body odors from anesthetized conspecifics of both sexes in Y-maze tests. We now ask whether ArKO mice are in fact capable of discriminating between and/or responding to volatile odors. Using habituation/dishabituation tests, we found that gonadectomized ArKO and wild-type (WT) mice of both sexes, which were tested without any sex hormone replacement, reliably distinguished between undiluted volatile urinary odors of either adult males or estrous females versus deionized water as well as between these two urinary odors themselves. However, ArKO mice of both sexes were less motivated than WT controls to investigate same-sex odors when they were presented last in the sequence of stimuli. In a second experiment, we compared the ability of ArKO and WT mice to respond to decreasing concentrations of either male or female urinary odors. We found a clear-cut sex difference in urinary odor attraction thresholds among WT mice: WT males failed to respond to urine dilutions higher than 1:20 by volume, whereas WT females continued to respond to urine dilutions up to 1:80. Male ArKO mice resembled WT females in their ability to respond to lower concentrations of urinary odors, raising the possibility that the observed sex difference among WT mice in urine attraction thresholds results from the perinatal actions of estrogen in the male nervous system. Female ArKO mice failed to show significant dishabituation responses to two (1:20 and 1:80) dilutions of female urine, perhaps, again, because of a reduced motivation to investigate less salient, same-sex urinary odors. Previously observed deficits in the preference of ArKO male and female mice to approach volatile body odors from conspecifics of either sex cannot be attributed to an inability of ArKO subjects to discriminate these odors according to sex but instead may reflect a deficient motivation to approach same-sex odors, especially when their concentration is low.  相似文献

Many animals self‐groom when they encounter the scent marks of opposite‐sex conspecifics. Self‐grooming transmits odiferous substances that contain information about the groomer’s condition, which is affected by its nutritional state. We tested the hypothesis that the amount of time that individuals self‐groom to opposite‐sex conspecifics is affected by the amount of protein in their diet and that of the scent donor. We did so by feeding meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) a diet containing 9%, 13%, or 22% dietary protein for 30 d and observing their self‐grooming behavior when they were exposed to bedding scented by an opposite‐sex conspecific (odor donor) fed one of the three diets, or fresh cotton bedding (control). The hypothesis was partially supported. We found that the protein content of the diet of male and female groomers did not affect the amount of time they self‐groomed. However, the protein content of the diet of male odor donors affected the amount of time that female voles spent self‐grooming. Female voles self‐groomed more in response to male odor donors fed a 22% protein‐content diet than to those produced by male odor donors fed either a 9% or a 13% protein‐content diet. Interestingly, the amount of time males self‐groomed was not affected by the protein content of the diet of the female odor donor. These results may, in part, be explained by the natural history of free‐living meadow voles, sex differences in costs associated with mate attraction and reproduction, and the direct or indirect benefits that females receive from males fed a diet high in protein content.

Many hypotheses have been put forth to account for differences in the amount of time that animals engage self-grooming when exposed to conspecifics or their odors, but most ignore the possibility that self-grooming may be associated with olfactory communication between groomers and conspecifics. As yet, we do not know the function of self-grooming and why animals do so when they encounter the odors of conspecifics. The present experiment tests the hypothesis that the amount of time that a meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus, self-grooms is affected by the reproductive state of the odor donor and its own reproductive state. The findings support the hypothesis. Male voles spent more time self-grooming when they were exposed to bedding scented by female voles in postpartum estrus (PPE) compared to that of female voles in other reproductive states and female mice. PPE female voles spent more time self-grooming when they were exposed to bedding scented by testosterone-treated male voles than either to that of gonadectomized male voles and male mice. PPE female voles spent more time than OVX+E and more time than OVX females self-grooming when they were exposed to bedding scented by testosterone-treated male voles. GX+T male voles spent more time than GX male voles self-grooming when they were exposed to bedding scented by PPE female voles. The results suggest that individuals self-groom more in the presence of an odor of a highly receptive potential mate than that of a less receptive mate.  相似文献

The ability of the tuco-tucoCtenomys talarum Thomas, 1898 to recognize sex by olfactory cues contained in urine, faeces and soiled shavings was tested by using preference tests. Nonbreeding tuco-tucos selected odours from opposite-sex rather than same-sex conspecifics. This pattern differed between sexes: females spent more time sniffing male than female odours for all scent sources whereas males did not show any difference in the time they spent investigating odours of each sex for each tested odour sources. Dissimilarities in odour selections between sexes may be attributed to a different combination of factors involved in olfactory interest for each sex. The function of gender cues recognition is discussed.  相似文献

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) is an important worldwide pest of citrus. It vectors three phloem-restricted bacteria in the genus Candidatus Liberibacter that cause huanglongbing (citrus greening disease). Studies were conducted to examine the behavioral responses of male and female D. citri to conspecifics of the same and opposite sex, with and without associated citrus host plants, in both open-air arena choice assays and Y-tube olfactometer assays. Virgin and mated male D. citri colonized citrus plants that were currently or had been previously colonized by virgin or mated female D. citri in greater numbers than control plants without females. However, males or females did not accumulate more on plants colonized by conspecifics of the same sex compared to uninfested plants, and females showed no preference for plants pre-infested with males compared with uninfested controls. In complementary Y-tube olfactometer assays, virgin and mated males chose arms with odor sources from mated females compared with blank controls in the absence of associated citrus host plant volatiles. In both behavioral assays, mated female D. citri appeared more attractive than virgin females. The vibrational calling behavior of male D. citri was reduced when males were challenged by the odors of conspecific mated females relative to when males were challenged by the odor of other males. Collectively, our results provide behavioral evidence for a female-produced volatile sex attractant pheromone in D. citri . Future identification and synthesis of a sex attractant pheromone will be an important contribution to current monitoring and management practices for D. citri .  相似文献

Although it is often assumed that males and females have mating preferences for larger individuals of the other sex, potential underlying differences between male and female preferences for body size are not commonly investigated. Here, sexual differences in body size preferences are examined in the poeciliid fish, Brachyrhaphis rhabdophora. Females preferred larger males to smaller males, but preference did not appear to be affected by female size. One population-level analysis for males did not indicate an overall preference for larger females. A closer examination, however, revealed an effect of male size on preference; larger males preferred larger females, while smaller males preferred smaller females. It appears then that females, regardless of size, share a preference for large males, but males differ in their behaviour, depending on their body size. In addition, while the degree of difference in size between paired females did not appear to affect male preference, the degree of difference in size between paired males strongly affected female preference; the greater the difference, the more strongly females preferred the larger male. Thus, intersexual selection is found to operate in both sexes, but how it operates appears to differ. Intrasexual and intersexual differences in mating behaviour may be missed when evaluating population-wide preferences. That is, there can be underlying differences in how the sexes respond and the consequences of such differences should be considered when investigating mate choice. The results are considered in terms of the evolution of mating preferences, alternative mating strategies, assortative mating, the maintenance of trait variation in a population, and current methods to evaluate mating preferences.  相似文献

Chemical communication in an archaic anuran amphibian   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Bioacoustic signals appear to be so essential to the socialcommunication of anuran amphibians that other sensory modalitieshave been largely ignored. We studied the abilities of Leiopelmahamiltoni, a species evolutionarily basal to most living anurans,to communicate by means of chemosignals. We collected frogsin the field, held them in captivity for 72 h, and then testedtheir preferences for substrates that they had marked themselvesto those marked by conspecifics. Individuals preferred papertowels that they had marked themselves to those marked by frogscollected from other home ranges. Preferences were greater,on average, when the conspecific had been collected fartheraway. Frogs did not discriminate between their own odor andthose of other individuals with which they had shared a homerange. Individuals preferred their own odor to a blank unmarkedtowel but also avoided odors of unfamiliar conspecifics whenpaired with a blank. The discovery of chemical communicationin an archaic anuran offers a window into how frogs may havecommunicated before mechanisms of bioacoustic signaling evolved. We suggest, however, that chemical signaling may be widespreadin anuran amphibians.  相似文献

In the raccoon dog,Nyctereutes procyonoides, utilization of latrines (defecation and urination sites), and olfactory recognition and memorization of latrine feces were studied in captivity. All individuals living within a cage utilized 1 communal latrine. The continuous and communal utilization of the latrine was based on a behavioural trait to deposit their excrement on the dung pile which was already present. They were attracted not only by their own dung pile but also by that of strange conspecifics. However, raccoon dogs could olfactorily recognize and memorize both their own feces and that of strange conspecifics individually. These results indicate that, in the raccoon dog, latrines serve as a place of information exchange about conspecific individuals, and olfactory memorization of the feces adjusts their social behaviour when they acutually encounter each other.  相似文献

Even though females are usually more selective in choosing their mates, males are also capable of exercising mate choice. Despite the large body of evidence on the individual features preferred in sexual selection, little attention has been devoted to the first stage of male–female interaction. As poeciliid fish are known to be social, in the wild, initially mate choice may concern a preliminary selection among shoals. Only after this primary choice, males may subsequently direct their attention to a specific mate. We observed spontaneous preference of male mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) when choosing between groups differing in size and sex ratio. In partial agreement with our predictions, males preferred to join a group of females rather than an isolated one (expt 1) and the larger group when two female groups were presented (expt 2). An all‐female group was preferred to a mixed‐sex group (expt 3), whereas no preference was observed when the two mixed‐sex groups differed in the number of males (expt 4) or in the size of the males (expt 5). These results suggest that male mosquitofish are capable of discriminating among different quantities of individuals within a group and use such information to select among groups in order to optimize the likelihood of successful matings.  相似文献

The level of aggressiveness and the weight of preputial gland and testis in male mice (Mus musculus) were influenced by housing condition, especially by the presence of cohabitant males. In this study, the relation between aggressiveness and the preputial gland and testis weight was studied for various housing conditions. The mouse individually housed in a cage that was linked to another cage containing another male separated by wire net was more aggressive than isolated or paired mice. The preputial gland weight also showed the same tendency, suggesting that the odor from other males promotes pituitary-gonadal activity in males, and that long-term cohabitance inhibits it.  相似文献
