Synopsis We report effects of a thermal effluent on fish and zooplankton in an impoundment in South Carolina. The effects are not directly due to heated effluent but are indirect effects on the trophic dynamics of the system and depend on the physical structure of the system, season, and geography. As effluent from a nuclear reactor cooling pond (Pond C) enters the larger Par Pond it sporadically carries with it zooplankton and/or dead fish. Pond C produces high zooplankton densities in two situations: (1) high and hot effluent flow during cold winter weather; and (2) low (cool) effluent flow during warmer seasons. High zooplankton densities attract Blueback herring, Alosa aestivalis, which attract largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides. Dying and dead bluegills, Lepomis macrochirus from Pond C (heat killed) are eaten by Par Pond bass which swim into effluent temperatures as high as 46°C to take these easy prey. Blueback herring and largemouth bass distribution are affected by the presence of food rather than by temperature. Par Pond blueback herring appear to be available to bass mainly when herring are near the effluent from Pond C and when they spawn in spring in the littoral zone. Because Blueback herring in Par Pond live only one year and because their presence in bass habitat is seasonal there is a strong seasonal component to bass food abundance. A previously reported annual oscillation in bass condition (K), with a peak in winter, occurs throughout Par Pond but is extreme in the vicinity of the effluent. The strong seasonality of food abundance for bass at the effluent correlates the winter peak in bass condition.  相似文献

One hundred and fifty largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) were caught during the mid-winter and mid-summer months in Par Pond, an 1120 ha cooling reservoir located on Savannah River Plant near Aiken, SC. Equal numbers of fish were taken from ambient and thermally altered (> 10° C ambient) areas of the lake. The total length and weight of each bass was noted, along with the presence or absence of lesions associated with red-sore disease (caused by the bacterium, Aeromonas hydrophila and the ciliate, Epistylis sp.). Blood was drawn, by heart puncture, from each bass and the following haematological parameters measured: haematocrit, haemoglobin, iron, total iron-binding capacity, thyroxine, sodium and potassium. Only the total iron-binding capacity was significantly higher in bass with red-sore disease; none of the other blood parameters were significantly different in infected and uninfected bass. Bass from thermally altered locations had consistently higher haematocrits during both summer and winter. Bass from thermal and ambient locations were not different with respect to iron, iron-binding capacity, sodium or potassium levels. However, bass taken during summer months had higher levels of circulating iron than individuals in winter months. Summer bass had higher thyroxine levels than bass in winter. These results are discussed in terms of their relationship to red-sore disease, season and the impact of thermal effluent.  相似文献

Densities ofAeromonas hydrophila were determined monthly from December 1975 to December 1977 in a South Carolina cooling reservoir which receives heated effluent from a single nuclear production reactor. Selected water quality parameters and prevalence of red-sore disease among largemouth bass were monitored simultaneously.Higher densities ofA. hydrophila were observed in areas of the reservoir receiving effluent from the reactor. Densities ofA. hydrophila generally were heterogeneous in the water column. The sediments had lower densities ofA. hydrophila than water immediately above.A. hydrophila could not be isolated from sediments greater than 1 cm from the water interface. Temperature, redox potential, pH, and conductivity were all significantly correlated with densities ofA. hydrophila in the water column. The temporal and spatial distribution and abundance ofA. hydrophila in water were not related to total organic carbon, dissolved organic carbon, particulate organic carbon, inorganic carbon, or dissolved oxygen. High densities ofA. hydrophila were observed in mats of decomposingMyriophyllum spicatum and, enterically, in largemouth bass, several other species of fish, turtles, alligators, and snails. The greatest densities ofA. hydrophila in water occurred during March and June with a second peak in October. The mean monthly densities ofA. hydrophila were positively correlated with the incidence of infection in largemouth bass. Largemouth bass from thermally altered parts of the reservoir had a significantly higher incidence of infection. It is concluded that thermal effluent significantly affects the ecology ofA. hydrophila and the epizootiology of red-sore disease within Par Pond.  相似文献

Summary A field experiment was designed to test a frequent assumption in the literature that vertebrate predators (in this case, fish and turtles) are capable of regulating the seasonal abundance and diversity of benthic communities in the littoral zone of lentic environments. Effects of thermal effluents from a nuclear reactor on predator-prey relationships were also examined. Benthic samples were removed after each of three, 3-month test periods from 36 predator exclusion cages (4m2) and 36 control plots located along a thermal gradient in Par Pond, an 1,100 ha freshwater reservoir in the southeastern United States.Results of our field experiments provide little evidence to suggest that either a single keystone species or vertebrate predators as a group were capable of regulating the abundance, diversity or productivity of chironomids in Par Pond. The relationship between predator treatment and community response (changes in density and species richness) was generally unaffected by either plot location or temperature fluctuations. When data from caged and control plots were pooled, however, both location and water temperature individually had significant impacts on the chironomid community. Alternative hypotheses are proposed to explain the lack of regulatory control of the benthic community by individual species or guilds of predators.  相似文献

We examined biotic and abiotic factors associated with density and diversity of larval midges (Diptera: Chironomidae) in the littoral zone of Par Pond, an 1100 ha cooling reservoir located near Aiken, South Carolina, USA. A total of 144 core samples were removed from 12 areas during each of 3 sample periods. Principal component analysis. Mantel analysis, and various univariate statistical tests were used to detect seasonal differences in (1) associations among areas and genera of Chironomidae, and (2) responses of midges to a multi-faceted environmental gradient. Water temperature, which in this case was a function of both season and thermal effluents, was the factor most strongly associated with relative changes in density and diversity within the chironomid assemblages. Plant biomass and/or plant diversity were significant factors correlated with midge density and diversity. Both particle size and organic content of the substratum, which varied little across stations, were relatively unimportant factors. Despite the presence of a multifaceted environmental gradient, the composition and relationships within the midge assemblages were remarkably similar across areas although total abundance and diversity varied.
On the basis of their similarity in structure and function, we classify the midge assemblages within the reservoir as members of the same community. However, in response to dissimilar or unequal selective forces (principally the area-specific effects of thermal effluents), these assemblages appear to behave environmentally as multiple units rather than as a single component of the benthic community in Par Pond.  相似文献

1. We studied bluegills to compare how thermal perturbation affected lipid dynamics and reproductive cycles of fish from heated (Pond C) and normothermic (Par Pond) sites.

2. Bodies of bluegills contained over 90%, and gonads and livers 10% of the non-polar lipids.

3.Overall, the percent body lipids of bluegills from the heated pond was twice as high (12.4%) as that of Par Pond bluegills (6.6%).

4. During a prolonged reactor down period, when both ponds were normothermic, body lipids of bluegills from Pond C and Par Pond increased at a rate of approximately 3 and 1% of body mass per week, respectively.

5. Juveniles from Pond C had higher percent stored lipids than did adult males or females.

Lactose-utilizing and nalidixic acid-resistant populations of Escherichia coli, having an optimum growth temperature of 37 degrees C, were placed in modified diffusion chambers. The chambers were submerged in the epilimnion and hypolimnion of a 1,100-hectare lake (Par Pond) which receives cooling water from a nuclear production reactor. Control chambers were placed in a deep-water reservoir and a Flowing-Streams Laboratory, both of which had comparable temperatures to Par Pond. The populations of E. coli were sampled regularly for up to 3 weeks. Viability of the bacteria was determined by dilution plating to nutrient agar followed by replicate plating onto selective medium to determine lactose utilization and nalidixic acid sensitivity. Initial populations of E. coli were lactose positive but changed to lactose negative in Par Pond when the reactor was operating (i.e., cooling water from the heat exchangers was being discharged to the lake). This alteration occurred most rapidly in the chambers closest to the cooling-water discharge point. Such changes did not occur in a deep-water reservoir, in Par Pond when the reactor was not operating, or in the Flowing-Streams Laboratory. The nalidixic acid-resistant characteristic remained stable regardless of the chambers' placement or reactor operations. Although the reasons for such alterations are unclear, it appears that lactose-negative populations of E. coli are selected for in these reactor effluent waters. The loss of the lactose characteristic prevents the recognition and identification of E. coli in this cooling lake (when the reactor is operating) and may prevent the assessment of water quality based on coliform recognition.  相似文献

L Lake, a reactor cooling reservoir in South Carolina, USA was managed after filling to promote the development of healthy ecological communities similar to those in mature regional cooling reservoirs. Two types of biomanipulation were undertaken to achieve this goal, the introduction of typical southeastern US reservoir fishes (bluegill and largemouth bass) and artificial planting of native aquatic macrophytes. Fish assemblages were monitored by electrofishing from reservoir filling in 1986 until 1998. Multivariate analysis divided the fish samples into five sequential periods resulting from species replacements and additions. Small species that colonized L Lake from a feeder stream predominated in the first period but were mostly eliminated, as bluegill, largemouth bass, and other lentic species increased in the second period. A rapid increase in threadfin shad abundance characterized the third period, and small littoral zone and phytophilous fishes increased during the fourth and fifth periods coincident with the proliferation of aquatic macrophytes. Analysis of Bray-Curtis similarities and the species accumulation rate indicated that the rate of fish community change decreased with time and that fish community structure changed little during the last several years of the study. By the end of the study, community structure was similar to that in a nearby cooling reservoir that supported diverse and resilient biota. Biomanipulation contributed to the rapid establishment of lentic species and later increases in small littoral and phytophilous species suggesting that biomanipulation may be useful in accelerating fish community development in new cooling reservoirs.  相似文献

In July and August, 1974, measurements were made of the standing crops of Cladocera in the littoral zone of Par Pond (Savannah River Plant, Aiken, South Carolina, U.S.A.), which receives hyperthermal effluent from a nuclear reactor. Crops of Ceriodaphnia spp. and Diaphanosoma brachyurum were greater in the heated than in the ambient area, while Bosmina longirostris maintained higher standing crops in the ambient area than in the area receiving hyperthermal effluent. In August, 1974, exclosures were placed in the effluent-affected area to test the hypothesis that the high density of rooted aquatic macrophytes in the effluent-affected area influences the standing crop of these Cladocera. The effects of changes in reactor effluent temperature were also determined in the exclosure experiments. The results of the exclosure study support two generalizations: 1) the presence of dense rooted vegetation allows higher standing crops of Ceriodaphnia spp. and D. brachyurum; and 2) lower temperatures than those usually found at the heated station would favor B. longirostris standing crops, while the higher effluent temperatures favor Ceriodaphnia spp. and D. brachyurum.  相似文献

The ponds are of similar size and in close proximity, but support different fish assemblages: bluegills ( Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque) and largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoides (Lacepede)) in one pond, and bluespotted sunfish ( Enneacanthus gloriosus (Holbrook)) and chain pickerel ( Esox niger Lesueur) in the other. Fish densities were reduced to less than 15% of ambient levels in both experiments.
2. In the bluegill–bass pond, density and biomass of most invertebrate taxa and size classes were unaffected by the fish manipulation. Total invertebrate densities did not differ significantly between fish treatments, but total invertebrate biomass was significantly greater where fish density was reduced, averaging 30% higher over the course of the study. Likewise, manipulation of fish in the bluespotted sunfish–pickerel pond had few significant effects on individual taxa and size classes. There were no significant effects on total invertebrate abundance in the bluespotted sunfish–pickerel pond.
3. Our results provide direct experimental evidence consistent with the collective evidence from previous work, suggesting that the impact of fish predation on density and biomass of invertebrate prey in littoral habitats is variable, but generally weak. Spatial and temporal distributions of salmonids were examined in Junction Pond, Northeast River, Placentia and Conne Pond, Conne River, Newfoundland using Lundgren multiple-mesh experimental gillnets. Both ponds contain populations of Atlantic salmon and brook trout with Junction Pond also possessing brown trout and resident Arctic charr. For salmon parr there was a significant month effect in distribution of catch rates in both ponds, and in Junction Pond, there was a significant diel effect. There was also significant variation in catch rates by lentic zone. For brook trout, there was a significant lentic zone × month interaction in Junction Pond; in Conne Pond, the main effects lentic zone and month were significant. Highest benthic catch rates of Atlantic salmon parr occurred in the littoral zone of both ponds. Most captures of brook trout also occurred benthically in both ponds; similar to salmon parr, littoral zone catch rates were higher than those of the deeper benthic area in Conne Pond but the reverse was true for Junction Pond. For both salmon parr and brook trout, the deeper benthic area and the pelagic area were relatively important rearing habitats in each pond. The distribution of catches for brown trout (few in number relative to the other species) in Junction Pond was similar to that of brook trout while Arctic charr were found mainly pelagically. Within the benthic area, most Arctic charr were caught at depths beyond the littoral zone. There was a tendency for Altantic salmon parr and brook trout found in the deeper benthic area and the pelagic area to be significantly larger and older than those in littoral zone in each pond. Sizes of Arctic charr did not differ significantly among lentic zones.  相似文献

T. latifolia grows along most of the shoreline of Par Pond, a cooling reservoir for the reactors at the Savannah River Plant in Aiken, South Carolina. A thermal gradient exists because of the movement of hot water from one end of the pond to the other. This study was undertaken to determine the biochemical and morphological effects of temperature on Typha latifolia clones originating from different ends of this thermal gradient. The data indicated that both “hot” and “cold” end plants react similarly to temperature. Forty-eight rhizome plants from both ends of Par Pond were transplanted into tanks at 20 C and 30 C. Total levels of malic dehydrogenase activity, proportions of mitochondrially bound MDH and growth rates were significantly different in plants grown in the two tanks, but no significant differences were observed within each tank between individuals from the “hot” and “cold” end. The relation of these results to hypotheses concerning quantitative strategies of enzyme adaptation are discussed in the paper.  相似文献

在三峡库区一水库内利用诱食剂引诱小型鱼类,为网箱中的加州鲈鱼提供天然饵料,以观测加州鲈鱼的生长情况。通过剪鳍标记方法,把三口网箱中的加州鲈鱼分为六个平行组和一个对照组,平行组的加州鲈鱼掠食被诱食剂引诱进入网箱的小型鱼类,而对照组的则摄食投喂足够数量的小型鱼类。结果表明:(1)平行组和对照组间加州鲈鱼的生长差异不显着;(2)加州鲈鱼的生长是逐渐增大的,生长速率时快时慢,并且呈日趋减缓态势:(3)实验结束时的体重比实验前平均增加了494.1%,平均日增重7.4%;(4)加州鲈鱼的体重与生长时间呈线性关系,生长方程为:W=8.7655+0.7900D(n=81,p=0.0000,r=0.8555);(5)加州鲈鱼的生长质量是不断变化的,似乎遵循瘦-肥-瘦循环生长规律;(6)加州鲈鱼的体长与体重呈幂指数关系,其回归方程为:W=0.00857L3.3335(P=0.0000,r=0.9905).    相似文献

Nonresident (introduced) largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) from Boundary Reservoir, Saskatchewan were examined for helminths. Four species of parasites were found (Diplostomum sp., Proteocephalus ambloplitis, Pomphorhynchus bulbocolli, and Contracaecum sp.). Contracaecum sp. larvae were absent in age-0 and age-1 bass, but prevalence and mean intensity increased with age for bass age-2 or older. Similarly, the prevalence and mean intensity of P. ambloplitis plerocercoids in bass were low until age-2; older bass harbored significantly more plerocercoids. Analysis of stomach contents indicates that this pattern of recruitment for Contracaecum sp. and P. ambloplitis is probably due to increased feeding by largemouth bass on aquatic insects and cannibalism after age-2, respectively. Although Contracaecum sp. may have been established in the reservoir prior to the introduction of bass, we are certain that P. ambloplitis was introduced via stocking with infected fingerlings.  相似文献

The diet of largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, in Lake Naivasha, Kenya   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake situated in the eastern rift valley of Kenya. Only five species of fish are present, all of which have been introduced. Of these, Oreochromis leucostictus, Tilapia zillii and Micropterus salmoides (largemouth black bass) support an important gillnet fishery with bass also being taken for sport. Until bass reached 260 mm f.l. they depended upon invertebrate food organisms. Thereafter crayfish, fish and frogs became increasingly important the larger the size of the bass. The most important invertebrate prey species was the water boatman, Micronecta scutellaris , followed by chironomid and culicid pupae. Zooplank-ton was consumed but only in large quantity by fish smaller than 80 mm. For bass over 260 mm the crayfish, Procambarus darkii , was the principal food. The largemouth bass in Lake Naivasha are generalized macro-predators, feeding principally on free-living animals of a kind most likely to be found in the littoral zones.  相似文献

Snails from a heated zone of Par Pond of the U.S. Savannah River Plant were compared with conspecifies from an unheated area of the same reservoir. The heated area averaged 5°C warmer and was thermally more variabic than the control area. This situation has existed for about twenty years. Variation in metabolic response to temperature was observed according to season and heated vs unheated area. A laboratory rearing experiment indicated that part of the observed variation was environmetally induced.

Life cycle and growth rates were similar in the two collection areas. Three generations were produced annually in both areas and spawning was synchronous except that the summer spawning period was shorter in the heated area. Live weights expressed relative to shell size were also similar, and decreased in both areas during summer.

It appears from these results that metabolic compensation for temperature can serve as an indicator of general thermal adaptability, but only if the degree of environmental plasticity is known for the species.  相似文献

A human case of creeping eruption due to Gnathostoma nipponicum was confirmed indirectly by finding infective advanced third-stage larvae in leftover largemouth bass meat. Gene frequency data from samples of Gambusia affinis populations at 76 localities across the Savannah River drainage were used to investigate temporal and spatial patterns in population genetic structure. Localities in the Par Pond system on the Savannah River Plant were sampled in 1971, 1977, and 1979. Allelic frequencies in these populations were generally stable through time, although significant temporal changes were observed among samples from Pond C, an impoundment receiving thermal effluent. Significant spatial heterogeneity in allele frequencies was observed on both microgeographic and regional scales. Populations within the Par Pond system were spatially subdivided at four of the five loci surveyed (mean FST = 0.051). Subdivision was even more pronounced when samples from across the Savannah River drainage were compared (mean FST = 0.196). A hierarchial analysis of gene diversity (GST) demonstrated that most of the genic diversity across the drainage exists as within-subdivision diversity. Even when populations from such contrasting habitats as rivers, creeks, ponds, and reservoirs are compared, an average of only 13% of the total gene diversity was attributed to between-group diversity. Greatest between-group gene diversity was observed when reservoirs were compared with one another. This general pattern of low between-habitat diversity suggests that differential selection pressures are not playing a major role in producing the observed levels of subdivision. In the Par Pond system, neither single locus nor multilocus genetic distances were significantly associated with geographic distance or with its reciprocal. For samples from over the Savannah River drainage, significant correlations between genetic and geographic distance were observed only for the Gpi-2 and Pgm-2 loci. Thus, there was a general lack of concordance between genetic and geographic distances. Spatial autocorrelation demonstrated patterns consistent with Wright's isolation by distance model. Significant positive correlations in allelic frequencies among neighboring populations were observed for five of six alleles; allelic frequencies in more distantly separated populations were typically not correlated.  相似文献
