Until recently acanthoecid choanoflagellates have been described only from marine and brackish waters. Here I describe a distinct, strictly freshwater acanthoecid species from Samoa based on its morphology, ecology and molecular biological data (partial Small Subunit rDNA). The lorica of the species is characterised by two extensions at the posterior chamber which are used for attachment to the substratum. The posterior chamber is constructed of irregularly arranged costae. The anterior chamber consists of four transverse costal rings and 14–18 longitudinal costae. Despite its sturdy appearance, the lorica was extremely sensitive to water turbulence and movements of the water. The species showed a salinity tolerance of 0.5 practical salinity units with reduced growth rates and a temperature tolerance range of 20–34 °C. According to the morphology, phylogenetic analysis, and autecology of the species it was classified as a member of the genus Stephanoeca.  相似文献

Mazoyerella gen. nov., based on Corynospora arachnoidea Harvey from Tasmania, is placed provisionally in the Compsothamnieae tribe of the Ceramiaceae. All plants can produce elongate-ovoid monosporangia which reproduce the same phase. Sporophytes also bear polysporangia and sexual plants are dioecious, bearing either spermatangial heads or subterminal procarps followed by carposporophytes with nearly all gonimoblast cells becoming carposporangia and an involucrum of sterile filaments developing from sterile cells associated with the procarp. The life-history has been followed through successive generations in culture.  相似文献

The extant Cyprinodontiformes (killifishes) with their two suborders Cyprinodontoidei and Aplocheiloidei represent a diverse and well-studied group of fishes. However, their fossil record is comparatively sparse and has so far yielded members of the Cyprinodontoidei only. Here we report on cyprinodontiform fossils from the upper Miocene Lukeino Formation in the Tugen Hills of the Central Rift Valley of Kenya, which represent the first fossil record of an aplocheiloid killifish. A total of 169 specimens - mostly extraordinarily well preserved - and a sample of ten extant cyprinodontiform species were studied on the basis of morphometrics, meristics and osteology. A phylogenetic analysis using PAUP was also conducted for the fossils. Both the osteological data and the phylogenetic analysis provide strong evidence for the assignment of the fossils to the Aplocheiloidei, and justify the definition of the new family †Kenyaichthyidae, the new genus †Kenyaichthys and the new species †K. kipkechi sp. nov. The phylogenetic analysis unexpectedly places †Kenyaichthys gen. nov. in a sister relationship to the Rivulidae (a purely Neotropical group), a probable explanation might be lack of available synapomorphies for the Rivulidae, Nothobranchiidae and Aplocheilidae. The specimens of †K. kipkechi sp. nov. show several polymorphic characters and large overlap in meristic traits, which justifies their interpretation as a species flock in statu nascendi. Patterns of variation in neural and haemal spine dimensions in the caudal vertebrae of †Kenyaichthys gen. nov. and the extant species studied indicate that some previously suggested synapomorphies of the Cyprinodontoidei and Aplocheiloidei need to be revised.  相似文献

A new monothalamous (single-chambered) soft-walled foraminiferal species, Arnoldiellina fluorescens gen. et sp. nov., was isolated from samples collected in the Gulf of Eilat, Israel. The species is characterized by a small elongate organic theca with a single aperture of allogromiids. It is characterized by the emission of green autofluorescence (GAF) that has so far not been reported from foraminifera. Phylogenetic analysis of a fragment of the 18S rDNA indicates that the species is related to a group of monothalamous foraminiferans classified as clade I. Although the morphology of the new species is very different compared to the other members of this clade, a specific helix in 18S rRNA secondary structure strongly supports this position.  相似文献

Two new Ulvella species, U. elegans R. Nielsen & K. Gunnarsson and U. islandica R. Nielsen & K. Gunnarsson are described. These microfilamentous marine green algae were found in the sublittoral zone in northern Iceland, epiphytic on Euthora cristata and associated with a calcareous polychaete tube, respectively. Unialgal cultures were established from field-collected material for morphological observations. In culture, Ulvella elegans was characterized by rosettes of monostromatic pseudoparenchyma consisting of radiating filaments with a margin of mutually free filaments. Each cell had one pyrenoid. Hairs were not observed. Ulvella islandica had a heterotrichous morphology, consisting of dense tufts of upright broad branches and much narrower, rhizoid-like branches. Acrochaete-type hairs occurred; these are hyaline non-septate merocytic extensions from a more or less bulbous base, which may be separated from the vegetative cell below. Most cells had one pyrenoid except for a few broad cells which had two or three. In a phylogenetic reconstruction based on the chloroplast-encoded tufA gene, the sequences for the two species were clearly distinct from any other Ulvella sequence available for this gene. Ulvella islandica was placed in a clade together with U. lens, U. wittrockii, U. reticulata and U. pseudorepens. Ulvella elegans occupied a branch deep in the phylogeny but the position was poorly supported.  相似文献

Flavobacterium arborescens (Frankland and Frankland) Bergey et al. IFO 3750 (ATCC 4358) is a Gram-positive, coryneform bacterium and the only available reference strain of the species. The cell wall peptidoglycan of the organism possesses alanine, glycine, lysine, glutamic acid plus 3-hydroxyglutamic acid, and homoserine at a ratio of 1:3:1:1:1, and a possible peptidoglycan structure is the B1 type described by Schleifer and Kandler. Cell wall sugars are galactose, mannose, and 6-deoxy-l-talose, but not rhamnose. Major menaquinones are unsaturated MK-11 and MK-12. These findings and other taxonomic properties suggest that F. arborescens should be reclassified in the genusMicrobacterium (Orla-Jensen) Collins et al., asMicrobacterium arborescens comb. nov., nom. rev.  相似文献

The Scrippsiella trochoidea species complex (Thoracosphaeraceae, Peridiniales) consists of a cryptic diversity and multiple species, for which established scientific names are not available at present. Previously, the name Scrippsiella trochoidea has been taxonomically clarified, leaving a reliable determination of morphologically similar, but only distantly related species impossible. We isolated and cultivated Scrippsiella erinaceus comb. nov. (strains GeoM*533 and GeoM*534) from material collected near the type locality off Rovinj, Republic of Croatia (Adriatic Sea). We barcoded the species of the Thoracosphaeraceae using rRNA sequences (including 22 new sequences) and investigated the morphology of the strains using light and electron microscopy. The Scrippsiella trochoidea species complex was composed of three primary clades, and the Adriatic strains were reliably assigned to one of them being distinct from the true Scrippsiella trochoidea. We designate an epitype for the basionym Rhabdosphaera erinaceus prepared from the strain GeoM*534. The unambiguous links between a scientific species name, its protologue, genetic characterization and spatial distribution have particular importance for character-poor, unicellular organisms such as the Dinophyceae.  相似文献

Puparia and third instar of a new diminutive whitefly, Regiominutus ventralis gen. et sp. nov. found infesting underside leaves of Aglaia elaeagnoides (A. Juss) (Meliaceae) on the Andaman Islands, India, are diagnosed, described and discussed. Regiominutus gen. nov. differs from allied genera, Aleuroclava Singh, Aericerus Dubey, Aleuroparvus Dubey, Aleuropleurocelus Drews and Sampson and Tetralicia Harrison in having a submarginal ventral groove, from the former two in having a deflexed submargin and smaller ventral surface and from the latter two in having a caudal furrow. Affinities and differences of the new genus shared with related genera are discussed. Puparium characters observed in slide mounts versus scanning electron microscope (SEM) images are presented. Line drawings, habitus images and SEM, microphotographs of the type specimens are given for the new taxa. This is the first whitefly species to be recorded from this host plant.  相似文献

The oxytrichid ciliate Architricha indica nov. gen., nov. sp., isolated from the river Yamuna, Delhi, shows a new combination of characters. It possesses a flexible body, 18 frontal-ventral-transverse (FVT) cirri, 3 right and 2 left marginal cirral rows, 6 dorsal bristle rows and 3 caudal cirri (CC). The FVT cirri arise from 6 primordia, which utilize 6 parental cirri in their origin as is typical of Oxytricha species. Multiple marginal rows (MMR) develop through 5 independent marginal primordia arising "within-row", 1 in each parental marginal row. All the 5 marginal rows are thus morphogenetically active. Such a mode of formation of MMR has not been recorded among oxytrichids and has necessitated separation of A. indica at the generic level. Histriculus, on the other hand, has well-known characteristics, viz. rigid body, confluent marginal rows and absence of CC. The morphogenesis of Histriculus histrio has been described by Berger and Foissner [1997. Cladistic relationships and generic characterization of oxytrichid hypotrichs (Protozoa, Ciliophora). Arch. Protistenkd. 148, 125-155]. Reinvestigation of very early stages of development revealed that (i) the FVT cirral primordia utilize kinetosomes from 5 parental FVT cirri, (ii) the primordium II of the proter is of a composite origin: kinetosomes from the oral primordium merge with the primordium II that originates from the buccal cirrus II/2 and (iii) the FVT primordia V and VI for the 2 daughter cells arise sequentially from the parental cirrus V/4. Thus, the genus Histriculus exhibits a new combination of characters with respect to the origin of FVT cirri, an additional pattern to be added to the known 6 patterns of FVT development in oxytrichids [Berger and Foissner, 1997; Berger, H., 1999. The majority of Euglyphida species are characterised by shells with imbricated silica scales. Environmental surveys indicate a large unexplored diversity and recent efforts hinted at a certain diversity of yet undescribed, inconspicuous, scale-lacking Euglyphida. Here we describe Phaeobola aeris gen. nov., sp. nov. that shows a variety of morphological characters typical for the Euglyphida but lacks silica scales-instead, this species bears an agglutinated test. Neither its morphology nor phylogenetic placement allows its assignment to any currently described family. We erected the yet monospecific genus Phaeobola gen. nov., which with yet available data remain Euglyphida incertae sedis.  相似文献

Acidobacteria represent abundant members of soil microbial communities but only few representatives could be isolated and validly described so far. Currently, eighteen species of subdivision 1, one species of subdivision 3, three species of subdivision 8, and one species of subdivision 10 are recognized. In contrast, Acidobacteria of subdivision 4 have largely escaped cultivation although they belong to the most abundant and diverse acidobacterial groups in soils. A member of subdivision 4, strain A2-16T, was isolated from a semiarid savanna soil. Cells were motile spheres to rods with a tendency to form chains and larger aggregates. Cultures were orange to pink colored, neutrophilic mesophiles, and showed aerobic chemoorganoheterotrophic growth on very few complex substrates and protocatechuate, and weak growth on chitin, cellulose and starch. While protein substrates such as casamino acids or peptone were utilized, individual amino acids did not promote growth. Also, growth on alternative electron acceptors or fermentative growth could not be observed. Major fatty acids were summed features 1 (15:1 iso H/13:0 3-OH) and 3 (16:1ω7c/15:0 iso 2-OH). The major quinone was MK-8. The DNA G+C content was 46.5 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis placed A2-16T amidst uncultured members of Acidobacteria subdivision 4. The most closely related environmental 16S rRNA gene sequences (96–97% nucleotide identity) were several clone sequences from terrestrial environments. Based on these characteristics, the isolated strain is proposed as a new species of a novel genus, Blastocatella fastidiosa gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of B. fastidiosa is A2-16T (=DSM 25172T = LMG26944T).  相似文献

 Morphological, molecular and cytological analyses were performed to assess the hybridity of 120 putative interspecific hybrids of Carica papaya L.×C. cauliflora Jacq. In the putative interspecific hybrids the number of main leaf veins was intermediate between the two parents while the hermaphrodite flower sex form and the low vigour were distinctive features of these hybrids. Petiole length, stem diameter, leaf length, leaf width and flower colour were similar to C. papaya, whereas leaf shape, type, serration, venation, petiole hairiness and flower shape were similar to C. cauliflora. Markers generated by the polymerase chain reaction using 72 10-mer primers (random amplified polymorphic DNA) revealed a high level of polymorphism (64%) between C. papaya and C. cauliflora. Seventeen of these primers yielded reliable and easily scorable polymorphic banding patterns that were further screened to reveal hybrids. A range of 1–5 RAPD primers consistently confirmed that all 120 plants were genetic hybrids, with all of them containing at least one band from the male parent. Cytological analysis revealed that 7–48% of the cells in many of the interspecific hybrids were aneuploid suggesting that chromosome elimination was occurring. The frequency of aneuploid cells was negatively associated (r=0.88) with the number of bands from the male parent integrated into the hybrid. Pollen fertility of the hybrids was from 0.5 to 14.0% while C. papaya and C. cauliflora had 88.0–99.0% and 90.0–97.0% fertile pollen, respectively.
