Paspalum dilatatum Poir. and its related species are warm-season grasses native to the grasslands of temperate South America. The group comprises several sexual tetraploid forms and apomictic tetraploids, pentaploids, hexaploids, and heptaploids. Interest in several of these biotypes as forage grasses has led to the accumulation of abundant cytogenetic information, evolutionary hypotheses, and thorough field studies which make the group a very promising model for analysis of evolutionary processes in apomictic complexes. Microsatellite markers were used here to analyze the relationships among the apomictic biotypes and evolutionary pathways. Most apomictic biotypes were shown to be monoclonal and sexual recombination is probably very rare. Suggested mechanisms for the formation of apomicts involve either unreduced female gametes or euploid pollen grains from the pentaploid biotype. Even-ploid apomictics, including those cytologically capable of facultative apomixis, are monoclonal and seem to play a very minor role in the evolution of the complex. The relationships hypothesized among the apomicts are congruent with a single origin of apomixis in the group which in turn would be coded by a non-recombining genome.  相似文献

? Premise of the study: Paspalum atratum is a perennial, cespitose, tropical grass native to Central and South America. This species belongs to a polyploid complex (Plicatula group) little known at the genetic level. The characterized microsatellite markers provide new informative tools for further studies of the hybridization, mating systems, and structure of the population. ? Methods and Results: Using the microsatellite-enriched library method, we isolated and characterized 19 microsatellite markers from P. atratum. Eleven of them were polymorphic, showing a variable degree of variation, while eight were monomorphic in the samples analyzed. Additionally, the transferability of these microsatellite markers was tested in other species. ? Conclusions: These results suggest that the characterized markers have enough discriminatory potential to be used in genetic characterizations of Paspalum taxa, which are based on an understanding of their mating systems and genetic structure, as well as in understanding the evolutionary processes involved in the evolution of groups of Paspalum.  相似文献

The homozygousOenothera hookeri Torr. etGray shows the typical pattern ofOnagraceae with ± callose on the external walls of megaspore mother cells and tetrads. Megasporogenesis is heteropolar, and the micropylar megaspore is the mother-cell of the 4-celled embryo sac. The complex-heterozygousOenothera biennis L. during megasporogenesis generally has callose not on the external cell walls but only on the transversal walls of the tetrad. In 95% of the ovules both the external chalazal and the micropylar megaspores develop to embryo sac mother-cells. Megasporogenesis is homopolar, and competition between two developing embryo sacs for nutrition in the ovule occurs. The embryo sac with the stronger genotype wins the race against the other one. Polarity phenomena during ontogeny of the female gametophyte are related to nutritional supply and hormonal induction from the ovule. The introduction of a developmental-physiological point of view into the discussion about the evolution of the embryo sac inOnagraceae is therefore justified.Stipendiatin der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung 1974/76.  相似文献

The distribution of CHy-banded heterochromatin was studied in the chromosomes ofAegilops longissima, Ae. speltoides, Triticum monococcum, andT. turgidum. Interphase nuclei were measured after Feulgen staining at different thresholds of optical density; the curves so obtained indicated the relationship among the species with respect to the different fractions of the genomic DNA. The karyological and cytophotometric analyses indicate differences betweenAe. speltoides andAe. longissima, the latter species being enriched in heterochromatin. Similar results were demonstrated for the genusTriticum, in whichT. turgidum showed more heterochromatin when compared withT. monococcum. The results suggest that the B genome of the cultivated wheats possesses a type of heterochromatin that resembles the type present inAe. longissima.  相似文献

Background and aims

The teosinte Zea nicaraguensis, which is adapted to frequently flooded lowlands, is considered a valuable germplasm resource for the development of flooding-tolerant maize. This species can form constitutive root aerenchyma under well-drained conditions. The objectives of this study were to screen Z. nicaraguensis accessions for the capacity to form constitutive aerenchyma, to obtain progeny with differing degrees of aerenchyma formation, and to compare the flooding tolerance of these progeny.

Methods

We evaluated constitutive aerenchyma formation in the root cortex of seedlings of eight accessions and several segregating populations of Z. nicaraguensis. We also evaluated flooding tolerance in lines selected for high or low degrees of constitutive aerenchyma formation.

Results

Seedlings of the eight accessions showed an extremely wide and continuous range of variation in aerenchyma formation. By phenotypic selection within two accessions, we obtained lines with either high or low degrees of constitutive aerenchyma formation. The lines selected for a higher degree of formation showed relatively high flooding tolerance evaluated by shoot dry weight ratio (flooded:control) than those with a lower degree of formation.

Conclusions

A greater capacity to form constitutive aerenchyma can enhance flooding tolerance.  相似文献

The flooding tolerance of Carex species was studied in relation to their field distribution and their capacity to form root aerenchyma under controlled conditions. In an alpine meadow, six Carex species were selected which were distributed in a clear zonation correlating with water content of the soil. Carex sempervirens and C. ferruginea were only found on nonflooded soil, the latter species preferring moister conditions. Carex davalliana and C. nigra were both associated with water-saturated soil, whereas C. limosa and C. rostrata preferred partially submerged conditions. Carex davalliana and C. limosa were bound to flooded soils with a relatively high redox potential and horizontally flowing groundwater. Carex rostrata and C. nigra grew in stagnant soil-flooded conditions with low soil redox potentials. The amount of aerenchyma in the roots of all species increased when grown in oxygen-deficient stagnant agar. This increase in root porosity, combined with increased root diameter, presumably improved internal aeration of the roots. Although all species survived experimental soil flooding, partial submergence was lethal to C. sempervirens and, surprisingly, also to the wetland species C. davalliana. Carex ferruginea showed a reduced growth rate during partial submergence. The three other species, all wetland plants, reached highest biomass production under soil-flooded and partially submerged conditions, with slower growth on free-draining soil. It is concluded that aerenchyma is not constitutive in the Carex species under study, and is best developed in Carex species from wetlands. Species with less aerenchyma perform poorly when soil-flooded, but conditions of partial submergence could even affect species with a considerable amount of root aerenchyma.  相似文献

Somatic chromosome numbers were determined for 20 new germplasm accessions of Paspalum, belonging to 17 species collected in Brazil. Chromosome number is reported for the first time for P. reduncum (2n = 18), P. cinerascens (2n = 20), P. cordatum (2n = 20), P. filgueirasii (2n = 24), P. ammodes (2n = 36), P. bicilium (2n = 40), P. heterotrichon (2n = 40), and P. burmanii (2n = 48). New cytotypes were confirmed for two germplasm accessions of P. carinatum (2n = 30) and P. trachycoleon (2n = 36), one of P. clavuliferum (2n = 40) and one of P. lanciflorum (2n = 40), indicating variability in these species. The remaining chromosome numbers reported here confirm previous counts. The unexpected chromosome numbers 2n = 18, 24, 36, and 48 in Paspalum species, which are usually shown to be multiples of 10, suggest that much more collection and cytogenetic characterization are necessary to assess the whole chromosomal and genomic multiplicity present in the genus, which seems to be much more diverse than currently thought to be.  相似文献

This is the first karyotype characterization of Brachiaria species. Twelve accessions belonging to five species were analysed. The basic chromosome number was x = 9 and 7, the same reported for the tribe Paniceae. Variations in the chromosome number were observed in B. decumbens (2n = 18; 36) and B. humidicola (2n = 36; 42; 54). Chromosome numbers of 2n = 18 in B. ruziziensis and 2n = 36 in B. brizantha and B. jubata were recorded. Inter- and intraspecific karyotype differentiation of the accessions analysed was facilitated by variations in karyotypic symmetry. The karyotypes were generally considered symmetrical, with a tendency to asymmetry in the direction of the polyploids. It is suggested that addition, deletions and mainly polyploidy have been the most direct causes involved in the chromosome evolution of this genus.  相似文献

Analysis of morphological and phenological data for determining the genetic variation within sevenLolium species led to the recognition of two groups within this genus. One group, containing the two inbreeding speciesL. temulentum andL. persicum, was clearly distinct from all other species. Strong morphological and phenological intergradation was found between both species. The cross-breeding species,L. perenne, L. rigidum, andL. multiflorum, formed another group. Little differentiation was found between these species, though they were distinct. Two inbreeding species,L. loliaceum andL. remotum, were clearly distinct from each other and the two groups.L. loliaceum had an isolated position and was most related toL. rigidum. L. remotum had an intermediate position between the cross-breeding and inbreeding species, and was almost equally distant from all three cross-breeding species.Genetic variation inLolium spp. I.  相似文献

We analyzed the different cold-resistance species Spiraea trichocarpa Nakai and Spiraea bumalda ‘Goldmound’ for low-temperature protein expression, protein types identification, and investigated the cold resistance mechanisms under different levels of low temperature by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and mass spectrometry. An average of 668 and 559 protein spots were detected by 2-DE of S. bumalda ‘Goldmound’ and S. trichocarpa Nakai, respectively, under different low-temperature treatments. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy identified 48 proteins, with varying expression, related to metabolism, amino acid synthesis, transportation, stress responses and oxidation–reduction reactions. The results showed that the photosynthesis of S. bumalda ‘Goldmound’ had been affected, enzymes (RuBisCO large and small subunits) involved in the Calvin cycle were up- and down-regulated, and ATP synthase in photophosphorylation was down-regulated. Cytosolic malate dehydrogenase expression weakened in the TCA cycle, while amino acid synthesis strengthened. The activity of four antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase [Cu–Zn], L-ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione peroxidase and peroxidase) was reduced under varying low temperatures. Enzymes (ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase and RuBisCO small chain precursor) involved in the photosynthesis of S. trichocarpa Nakai showed obvious up- and down-regulation under low temperatures. Cold treatment influenced the photosynthesis of S. trichocarpa Nakai and S. bumalda ‘Goldmound’, but the results showed significant differences between the two species, which were supposed to the fact that low temperature modified the metabolic mechanisms and led to the weaker cold resistance in S. bumalda ‘Goldmound’ than in S. trichocarpa Nakai.  相似文献

The radula is the basic feeding structure in gastropod molluscs and exhibits great morphological diversity that reflects the exceptional anatomical and ecological diversity occurring in these animals. This uniquely molluscan structure is formed in the blind end of the radular sac by specialized cells (membranoblasts and odontoblasts). Secretion type, and the number and shape of the odontoblasts that form each tooth characterize the mode of radula formation. These characteristics vary in different groups of gastropods. Elucidation of this diversity is key to identifying the main patterns of radula formation in Gastropoda. Of particular interest would be a phylogenetically closely related group that is characterized by high variability of the radula. One such group is the large monophyletic superfamily Conoidea, the radula of which is highly variable and may consist of the radular membrane with five teeth per row, or the radular membrane with only two or three teeth per row, or even just two harpoon-like teeth per row without a radular membrane. We studied the radulae of two species of Conoidea (Clavus maestratii Kilburn, Fedosov & Kantor, 2014 [Drilliidae] and, Lophiotoma acuta (Perry, 1811) [Turridae]) using light and electron microscopy. Based on these data and previous studies, we identify the general patterns of the radula formation for all Conoidea: the dorsolateral position of two groups of odontoblasts, uniform size, and shape of odontoblasts, folding of the radula in the radular sac regardless of the radula configuration. The morphology of the subradular epithelium is most likely adaptive to the radula type.  相似文献

The Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world with extremely high plant and animal diversity, but large areas have been invaded by Vochysia divergens Pohl (Vochysiaceae), a tree that is native to the Amazon Basin, and Curatella americana L. (Dilleniaceae), a tree that is native to the Brazilian savanna (cerrado). V. divergens is reportedly floodadapted, thus its ability to invade the Pantanal may not be surprising, but the invasion of C. americana is counterintuitive, because this species is adapted to the well-drained soils of the cerrado. Thus, we were interested in comparing the photosynthetic capacity, in terms of CO2 conductance, carboxylation, and electron transport of these species over a seasonal flooding cycle. Given that V. divergens is reportedly flood-adapted, we predicted that this species would have a higher photosynthetic capacity than C. americana, especially under flooding. To test this hypothesis we measured the photosynthetic CO2 response (P N/C c) of V. divergens and C. americana within 1 year to determine, if photosynthetic capacity varied systematically over time and between species. Contrary to our hypothesis, V. divergens did not always have a higher photosynthetic capacity than C. americana. Rather, species differences were influenced by temporal variations in flooding and the leaf age. Leaf CO2 assimilation and photosynthetic capacity of both species were lower during the flood period, but the differences were not statistically significant. The physiological performance of both species was strongly related to leaf N and P concentrations, but P limitation appeared to be more important than N limitation for these species and ecosystem. Photosynthetic capacity was higher and more stable for V. divergens, but such an advantage did not result in a statistically significant increase in P N. Our results suggest that both species are tolerant to flooding even though they are adapted to very different hydrological conditions. Such physiological plasticity, especially for C. americana, might be a key feature for the ability to survive and persist in the seasonally flooded Pantanal.  相似文献

With about 350 species, Paspalum is one of the richest genera within the Poaceae. Its species inhabit ecologically diverse areas along the Americas and they are largely responsible for the biodiversity of grassland ecosystems in South America. Despite its size and relevance, no phylogeny of the genus as a whole is currently available and infrageneric relationships remain uncertain. Many Paspalum species consist of sexual-diploid and apomictic-polyploid cytotypes, and several have arisen through hybridization. In this paper we explore the phylogenetic structure of Paspalum using sequence data of four non-coding cpDNA fragments from a wide array of species which were combined with morphological data for a subset of diploid taxa. Our results confirmed the general monophyly of Paspalum if P. inaequivalve is excluded and the small genus Thrasyopsis is included. Only one of the four currently recognized subgenera was monophyletic but nested within the remainder of the genus. Some informal morphological groups were found to be polyphyletic. The placement of known allopolyploid groups is generally congruent with previously stated hypotheses although some species with shared genomic formulae formed paraphyletic arrangements. Other species formed a basal grade including mostly umbrophilous or hygrophilous species. It is hypothesized that the genus may have diversified as a consequence of the expansion of C4 grass-dominated grasslands in South America.  相似文献

The cordgrasses in the genus Spartina have become model organisms for studying biological invasions from both ecological and genetic perspectives. Here we characterize 11 disomic loci in Spartina alterniflora that show promise for population studies and for studying hybridization events between S. alterniflora and S. foliosa. Comparisons among invasive and native S. alterniflora populations showed that levels of allelic variation are lower in invasive populations. In addition, nearly all loci that amplified in S. foliosa populations and in a swarm of S. alterniflora×foliosa hybrids were polymorphic. We also found that several loci amplified successfully in other Spartina species.  相似文献

The synflorescences of species related to Schizachyrium condensatum are typologically characterized. This species presents floriferous shoots with complex systems of ramification. In all species the inflorescence is polytelic and truncate. The typological pattern has been described and presents differences in the following parameters: length and shape of the synflorescence, paracladia of the trophotagma subzone and short paracladia subzone. A comparative analysis of the variations observed in the structure of the synflorescence is included.  相似文献
