Spirogyra filaments show unique photomovement that differs in response to blue, red, and far‐red light. Phototropins involved in the blue‐light movement have been characterized together with downstream signaling components, but the photoreceptors and mechanical effectors of red‐ and far‐red light movement are not yet characterized. The filaments of Spirogyra varians slowly bent and aggregated to form a tangled mass in red light. In far‐red light, the filaments unbent, stretched rapidly, and separated from each other. Mannitol and/or sorbitol treatment significantly inhibited this far‐red light movement suggesting that turgor pressure is the driving force of this movement. The bending and aggregating movements of filaments in red light were not affected by osmotic change. Three phytochrome homologues isolated from S. varians showed unique phylogenetic characteristics. Two canonical phytochromes, named SvPHY1 and SvPHY2, and a noncanonical phytochrome named SvPHYX2. SvPHY1 is the first PHY1 family phytochrome reported in zygnematalean algae. The gene involved in the transport of phytochromes into the nucleus was characterized, and its expression in response to red and far‐red light was measured using quantitative PCR. Our results suggest that the phytochromes and the genes involved in the transport system into the nucleus are well conserved in S. varians.  相似文献

The inheritance of the red color was studied in two different varieties of tilapia which are both considered as hybrids of Oreochromis mossambicus. Crosses between red tilapia from the Philippines (PRT) and Sarotherodon galilaeus, or Oreochromis aureus gave a 1:1 ratio of red: normal and crosses between F1 black fish gave only black offspring. On the other hand crosses between the F1 red fish gave a 3:1 ratio of red:black and crosses between F1 red and black offspring gave a 1:1 ratio. These results lead to the conclusion that red color is dominant over the normal black color and controlled by a single autosomal gene (R). A unique phenotype named albino with black eyes was observed among offspring of PRT and a presumed model of inheritance of this trait is proposed. Genetic analysis of a second variety of red tilapia (derived from an unknown origin) showed the following results: crosses between parents and between their F1 offspring consistently gave 100% red fish and crosses between this red tilapia and Oreochromis aureus gave 100% black offspring. The crosses between red and black F1 of these last two crosses gave a 1:1 ratio and crosses carried out between the black F1 offspring gave a 1:3 ratio of red:black. It may be concluded from these results that the black color is dominant in this strain and that this color is controlled by a single autosomal gene (B). The presumed mode of action of the dominant gene (R) as well as of the recessive gene (b) are discussed.  相似文献

Red mud is a bauxite residue, a by-product of the Bayer process for extraction of alumina from bauxite ore. It is highly alkaline in nature and contains heavy metal oxides and a variety of minor trace elements. Its disposal is the paramount environmental issue in alumina refining. Establishment of vegetation on red mud dumping sites is difficult because of alkaline pH and high concentrations of soluble ions and toxic compounds. The bioremediation of red mud seems to be a realistically convenient way for environmentally safe disposal of this industrial residue. The present study specifically deals with the utilization of cyanobacteria to bioremediate red mud. Being predominantly a nitrogen-fixing photosynthetic microorganism, it has considerable potential for bioremediation of bauxite residue. As a prelude step, four cyanobacterial species, viz. Oscillatoria sp., Lyngbya sp., Phormidium sp., and Microcystis sp. were selected to study their capability to grow on red mud–amended medium. The results indicate that Oscillatoria and Phormidium performed well on red mud–amended medium, followed by Lyngbya. Growth of Microcystis was inhibited significantly even at lower concentrations of red mud amendments. These findings point out the potential of these microorganisms, to be utilized as active biological agents for bioremediation of red mud.  相似文献

Summary White and red mutants of Phycomyces, derived from two independent wild types (yellow) by mutagenesis using nitrosoguanidine, either in a single step (26 white, 5 red mutants), or in two steps (10 white mutants, from one of the red mutants) were studied with respect to complementation in heterokaryons. The tests clearly establish the involvement of three and only three genes, here named carA, carB, and carB. The carA and the carR mutants are white, the carA mutants do not accumulate phytoene, the carB mutants do. The carR mutants are red and accumulate lycopene. The two step mutants are either carA and carR, or carB and carR double mutants. A few of the white mutants obtained in a single mutagenization step are affected in carA and carR. They may be polar mutants in an operon or accidental double mutants.  相似文献

The introduced parasitoid, Aphytis melinus DeBach (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), utilizes a kairomone, O-caffeoyltyrosine, to recognize California red scale, Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell) (Homoptera: Diaspididae). Wasps used in augmentative release programs for California red scale on California citrus are reared on oleander scale, Aspidiotus nerii Bouché (Homoptera: Diaspididae), themselves reared on squash. The goals of this study were: 1) to determine if long-term rearing on oleander scale had caused A. melinus to develop a preference for oleander scale, and 2) to determine if the preference of oleander-reared A. melinus for California red scale might be enhanced by exposing them to synthetic O-caffeoyltyrosine prior to release. Wasps that were removed from their hosts as pupae and allowed to emerge as adults isolated from their hosts retained a strong preference for California red scale regardless of rearing host. This preference was reduced if wasps were allowed to emerge from oleander scale, thus acquiring early adult experience with oleander scale. The preference for California red scale was restored, however, by exposing wasps reared on oleander scale to synthetic O-caffeoyltyrosine prior to bioassay. Exposure of A. melinus reared in commercial insectaries to O-caffeoyltyrosine prior to release may be a means to improve the effectiveness of such wasps in augmentative release programs to control California red scale.  相似文献

Recent studies indicate that some raphidophycean red tide flagellates produce substances able to scavenge superoxide, whereas there have been no reports on superoxide scavenger production by dinophycean red tide flagellates. In this study, we examined the superoxide-scavenging activity of aqueous extracts from dinophycean red tide flagellates, Gymnodinium spp., Scrippsiella trochoidea, and Karenia sp., by a luminol analog L-012-dependent chemiluminescence (CL) method and an electron spin resonance (ESR)-spin trapping method, and compared the activity to that of raphidophycean red tide flagellates, Chattonella spp., Heterosigma akashiwo, and Fibrocapsa japonica. In the experiment applying the L-012-dependent CL method, only the aqueous extracts from raphidophycean red tide flagellates showed superoxide-scavenging activity. On the other hand, applying the ESR-spin trapping method, we found that the aqueous extracts from dinophycean red tide flagellates also showed superoxide-scavenging activity. This is the first report on the production of a superoxide-scavenger by dinophycean red tide flagellates.  相似文献

The peculiarities of osmoregulation of circulating red blood cells of the stenohaline giant gobyGobius cobitis and the euryhaline toad gobyGobius batrachocephalus have been studied under experimental conditions. In the giant goby, volume of the red blood cells increased steadily by 10.6–18.1% (p < 0.05) after reduction of the medium salinity from 15–17 to 6.0–6.8‰ and this volume increase remained during the entire experimental period (40–45 days). Lysis of red blood cells was noticed in some cases, which was indicated by a decrease of the number of red blood cells and an increase of concentration of free hemoglobin in the blood plasma. No similar reactions were observed in the euryhaline toad goby; the mean cell volume did not change statistically significantly. The volume regulation resulted in K+ efflux from red blood cells. The blood red cells of the toad goby had a high resistance to osmotic stress. The Na+,K+-ATPase activity in the red blood cell membranes of the toad goby was higher by 18.8% (p < 0.001) than in the giant goby.  相似文献

Re-nd, which was induced from the wild-type C108 by the chemical mutagen N-methane-N-methylnitrourea, is a nondiapause red-egg mutant of silkworm Bombyx mori. The special significance of the Re-nd mutant is that it is an independent dominant mutant. The aim of this study was to establish the type of pigment responsible for the red coloration in the Re-nd mutant eggs in silkworm. We compared the eggs of Re-nd mutants with those of the other B. mori egg color strains and confirmed that the Re-nd mutant is the only strain with red color and red pigment granules in nondiapause, showing this mutant belongs to the pigmentation in the serosa. We speculated that the red substance, which contributed to the bright red pigmentation for nondiapause eggs of the Re-nd mutant, could potentially be a novel pigment according to its solubility, optimum absorption peak, and oxidation–reduction reaction. Moreover, we have successfully constituted the system for enrichment, extraction, and purification of the red substance responsible for the Re-nd mutant, providing a new method for the separation and purification of other known and unknown pigments or substances.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to assess the responses of seedlings of five species of Nicotiana genus to red and far red radiation. N. acuminata exhibits positive photoblastic behaviour and germination was completely inhibited under far red and darkness. In N. glauca germination was reduced under far red and darkness, but the other species showed neutral behaviour. The hypocotyl elongation was inhibited in N. glauca and N. tabacum under white and far red radiation. In N. langsdorffii and N. debneyi hypocotyl was elongated under far red radiation. Only in N. acuminata red radiation promote greater hypocotyl elongation than dark condition. On the phylogenetic tree obtained from restriction analysis N. glauca and N. acuminata are grouped in one branch, while the other species, N. langsdorffii, N. debneyi and N. tabacum, are grouped in the other branch cluster. Moreover, the N. debneyi behaviours under different radiation treatments were similar to those of N. tabacum. These two species are allopolyploid members of the genus Nicotiana, as also was confirmed by this study. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Red carotenoid colours in birds are widely assumed to be sexually selected quality indicators, but this rests on a very incomplete understanding of genetic mechanisms and honesty‐mediating costs. Recent progress was made by the implication of the gene CYP2J19 as an avian carotenoid ketolase, catalysing the synthesis of red C4‐ketocarotenoids from yellow dietary precursors, and potentially a major mechanism behind red coloration in birds. Here, we investigate the role of CYP2J19 in the spectacular colour diversification of African weaverbirds (Ploceidae), represented by five genera and 16 species: eight red, seven yellow and one without carotenoid coloration. All species had a single copy of CYP2J19, unlike the duplication found in the zebra finch, with high expression in the retina, confirming its function in colouring red oil droplets. Expression was weak or undetected in skin and follicles of pigment‐depositing feather buds, as well as in beaks and tarsi, including those of the red‐billed quelea. In contrast, the hepatic (liver) expression of CYP2J19 was consistently higher (>14‐fold) in seven species with C4‐ketocarotenoid coloration than in species without (including one red species), an association strongly supported by a phylogenetic comparative analysis. The results suggest a critical role of the candidate ketolase, CYP2J19, in the evolution of red C4‐ketocarotenoid colour variation in ploceids. As ancestral state reconstruction suggests that ketocarotenoid coloration has evolved twice in this group (once in Euplectes and once in the Quelea/Foudia clade), we argue that while CYP2J19 has retained its ancestral role in the retina, it has likely been co‐opted for red coloration independently in the two lineages, via increased hepatic expression.  相似文献

Adult clover root weevil Sitona lepidus show a feeding preference for white clover Trifolium repens over red clover Trifolium pratense. The effects on S. lepidus of three red clover T. pratense lines, selected for high, medium, or low levels of the isoflavone formononetin in foliage, were compared in three experiments using white clover as a control. In a no‐choice slant board experiment, weevil larval weights were greater for larvae feeding on white clover roots than those feeding on roots of the red clovers. The effect of larval root herbivory on plant growth was similar for all four clovers. Following root herbivory, a large increase in root and shoot formononetin levels was observed in the high‐formononetin selection of red clover but little change in the low‐formononetin red clover. In a no‐choice experiment with sexually mature female adult weevils feeding on foliage of the four clovers, all the red clovers had increased weevil mortality. Female weevils eating the high‐formononetin red clover laid fewer eggs than weevils eating white clover. The red clover diet caused a large accumulation of abdominal fat and/or oil in the weevils, whereas weevils feeding on white clover did not accumulate fat/oil. When sexually immature adult weevils were given a choice of foliage from all four clovers, white clover was eaten preferentially, and the low‐formononetin red clover was preferred to the high‐formononetin red clover. The results suggest that formononetin and associated metabolites in red clover may act as chemical defences against adult S. lepidus and that distribution in forage legumes can be manipulated by plant breeding to improve root health.  相似文献

Some acidic red soils in hilly regions of subtropical China were degraded as a result of slope erosion following the removal of natural vegetation, primarily for fuel. Revegetation is important for the recovery of the degraded ecosystem, but plant growth is limited by the low fertility of eroded sites. One factor contributing to the low fertility may be low inoculum density of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Compared to red soils under natural vegetation or in agricultural production, substrates on eroded sites had significantly lower AM fungal propagule densities. Thus, the management and/or application of AM fungi may increase plant growth and accelerate revegetation. Thirteen species of AM fungi were identified in red soils by spore morphology. Scutellospora heterogama, Glomus manihotis, Gigaspora margarita, Glomus aggregatum and Acaulospora laevis were among the most common according to spore numbers. Pot cultures were used to isolate and propagate 14 isolates of AM fungi indigenous to red soil. The effectiveness of each fungus in promotion of growth of mungbean was evaluated in red soil. For comparison, three isolates from northern China, known to be highly effective in neutral soils, and two isolates from Australia, known to be from acidic soil were used. Effectiveness was positively related to root infection (r 2 = 0.601). For two of these isolates, Glomus caledonium (isolated from northern China) and Glomus manihotis (an isolate indigenous to red soil), the applied P concentration giving the highest infection and response to infection was approximately 17.5 mg P kg–1 soil. In field experiments in which this concentration of P was applied, the five most effective isolates were tested on mungbean. The Glomus caledonium isolate from northern China was the most effective, followed by the indigenous Glomus manihotis isolate. The Glomus caledonium isolate was also shown to be effective on Lespedeza formosa, which is commonly used in revegetation efforts. We conclude that inoculation of plants with selected isolates of AM fungi may aid in revegetation efforts on eroded red soils in subtropical China.  相似文献

Phytochrome Pelletability in Barley   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Phytochrome pelletability in the 1000 g and 20,000 g pellet from crude homogenates of etiolated Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Ark Royal primary leaves is enhanced by red light in vivo and in vitro. Red enhanced phytochrome pelletability appears different in the 1000 g and 20,000 g pellets after red light in vivo, being irreversible by subsequent far red light in the latter. Mg2+ concentration in the range 1–20 mM has no effect on red enhanced phytochrome pelletability. The enhancement of pelletability is reduced by low pH and high 2-mercaptoethanol concentration, conditions which lead to a high level of pelletability of the far red absorbing form of phytochrome. Washing these pellets at high pH or low 2-mercaptoethanol concentration reveals the red enhancement of pelletability. The results are discussed in terms of a possible two point attachment of phytochrome to membranes.  相似文献

Heterophile A-reactive agglutinins, obtained from the seeds of Dolichos biflorus and from the snails Helix aspersa, Helix pomatia and Cepaea nemoralis, were tested for reactivity with the saliva and red cells of a random series of dogs. Saliva from dogs with the A-like Tr red cell antigen inhibited the agglutination of human A red cells by each of the reagents. However, none of the heterophile agglutinins distinguished Tr+ from Tr— red cells: the Dolichos agglutinin was non-reactive, while all of the snail reagents agglutinated both Tr+ and Tr— cells. It is concluded that the canine red cell bears a series of heterophile receptors which mask reactivity with the canine homologue of the red cell A-antigen, and that the restricted size of the binding sites of the agglutinins limits the informational significance of cross-reactivity obtained with these reagents.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if endophytic bacteria could contribute to cultivar specific interactions between red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) in crop rotations. Endophytic bacteria were isolated from the roots of four red clover cultivars (AC Charlie, Altaswede, Marino and Tempus) grown in the field. Populations of bacteria from each cultivar were similar. The most abundant genus was Rhizobium, but species of Curtobacterium, Pseudomonas, and Xanthomonas were common to all cultivars. Plantlets of two potato cultivars, Russet Burbank and Shepody, were inoculated individually with the seven bacterial isolates most frequently recovered from each red clover cultivar, and grown in Magenta vessels for 6 wk. Significant differences were found for plant height, and wet weights of roots, shoots and their total. Potato cultivars differed for root wet weight only, while red clover cultivar, as a source of bacteria, had a significant effect on all traits except plant height. Differences among bacteria were significant for all traits except shoot wet weight. There was a significant interaction of potato cultivar by red clover cultivar. The potato cultivar Russet Burbank did best with bacteria from the red clover cultivar, Marino; and Shepody, with bacteria from Altaswede.  相似文献

The melanocyte-stimulating hormone receptor (MC1-R) is a central regulator of mammalian coat colour, encoded by the extension locus. In cattle, the dominant extension allele ED is associated with the production of black pigment in coloured areas. Genotyping of the MC1-R gene in a bull with mosaic expression of red vs. black pigment verified the existence of the ED allele, in spite of the fact that the majority of the animal is red coloured. No further mutations were found within the ED variant of the MC1-R gene, which was inherited from a completely red mother (genotype ED/e).  相似文献
