Inputs and outputs of allochthonous particulate organic matter were measured during 15 months in the upper part of a beech forest headwater stream. Inputs were estimated to 716 g m−2 yr−1, and leaves made up 71%. Outputs were estimated to 535 g m−2 yr−1 and consisted mainly of FPOM (92%). Therefore, a significant transformation of CPOM into FPOM took place. The mean FPOM concentration varied between 0.6 and 3.4 mg 1−1, but the daily variations greatly surpassed the seasonal variations. As discharge was rather constant, the observed variations were due to external disturbances, especially precipitation.
A tentative scheme for leaf processing is established from the present data and previous studies in the area, indicating that a significant part takes place in the MPOM pool and that microbial and invertebrate processing make up about 50% each of total intra-system processing.  相似文献

Primary productivity of algal epiphytes on the surfaces of Phragmites, Potamogeton , and Nuphar was measured seasonally from June 1978, through June 1979, in the littoral zone of Lake Ohrid, using 14C methodology. Surface areas of individual macrophytes were determined throughout the study period through the use of a non-miscible surfactant and a calibration curve of surfactant weight versus known, calculated surface areas.
Mean total surface area available for epiphytic colonization during the study period was 1.032 m2 macrophyte surface per m2 of littoral zone for Phragmites , 0.810 m2 for Potamogeton , and 0.167 m2 for Nuphar . Seasonal rates of mean primary productivity of algal epiphytes on Phragmites from the surface to the light-compensation depth ranged from 84–1406 mg C m−2 littoral zone d−1; ranges for epiphytes on Potamogeton and Nuphar were 77–586 and 69–268 mg C m−2 littoral zone d−1, respectively. Maximum rates were observed typically during June; minimum rates were observed typically during August to December. Mean daily productivity rates over the 12 month period were for epiphytes on Potamogeton 167.0, on Nuphar 100.4 and on Phragmites 671.2 mg C m−2 littoral zone d−1. Calculated annual production for epiphytes on Nuphar was 36.65, on Potamogeton 60.95 and on Phragmites 245.0 g C m−2 littoral zone yr−1. Epiphytic production data were typically considerably higher than production data obtained for littoral and pelagial planktonic algae and compare favorably with published data for epiphytic and periphytic production in Lawrence Lake, Marion Lake, and Borax Lake.  相似文献

Regular (monthly) additions of NH4NO3 (4–12 g N m−2 yr−1) were made over a period of 8 yr (1989–98) to areas of moorland in North Wales dominated by the ericaceous shrub Calluna vulgaris . Results from the early stages of the experiment (1990–94) have shown marked and dose-related increases in shoot extension and canopy height in response to the nitrogen treatments, with significantly higher shoot nitrogen contents. The nitrogen-related stimulation in the growth of the C. vulgaris canopy over this period has resulted in large accumulations of litter on the high-nitrogen-treated plots (6.6 kg m−2 in plots treated with 12 g N m−2 yr−1, compared with 3.8 kg m−2 for the water controls). Litter nitrogen concentrations were also significantly increased at the higher rates of nitrogen addition, leading to a doubling of the total return of nitrogen to the litter layer over the experimental period. These changes in vegetation structure were associated with large reductions in the abundance of the bryophyte and lichen species normally present under the untreated canopy. Results since 1994, however, show little increase in shoot extension in response to the nitrogen treatments, with no clear dose response to increasing levels of addition. These findings are associated with a dose-related increase in the susceptibility of the nitrogen-treated areas of the C. vulgaris canopy to late winter injury, characterized as browning of the shoot tips in early to late spring. These results indicate that deleterious effects are now accumulating as a result of the long-term addition of nitrogen to these moorland plots.  相似文献

Abstract: The effect of plant succession on methane uptake was measured on intact soil cores collected from seven heathland sites. Six of the sites had undergone either secondary succession with grass or oak, ammonium fertilization or ploughing, while the seventh site was located in the native heathland. There was a positive relationship between methane uptake rate and time elapsed since the plant invasion had taken place in the native heathland. The native heathland site showed an insignificant atmospheric methane uptake of 0.01 mg CH4 m−2 d−1, whereas the established oak brushwood (70 years old) and the grass invaded heathland (13 years old) showed rates of 1.36 mg CH4 m−2 d−1 and 0.73 mg CH4 m−2 d−1, respectively. In the fertilized heathland plot (112 kg N ha−1 six years prior to this study) grass had become the dominating species and showed a methane oxidation rate of 0.28 mg CH4 m−2 d−1. Ploughing of the heathland resulted in methane oxidation rates seven times the rates measured in the native heathland. The results suggested that an increased future atmospheric nitrogen deposition in heathlands and other nutrient poor ecosystems may have a stimulating effect on the soil sink for atmospheric methane.  相似文献

A population of Tubifex tubifex in an organically rich stream was found to have an annual life-cycle with a prolonged period of reproductive activity throughout the winter and spring. Cocoons were produced mainly during the late winter and early spring. No cocoons were found during August and September, and there were few mature worms at this time.
The population density ranged between 5420 m−2 in mid-September and 613000 m −2 in mid-May. The maximum population biomass (Bmax) recorded was 106 g dry wt m−2 (March) and the minimum was 10 g dry wt m−2 (September). Total annual production (P) was 139 g dry wt m−2 and the average annual biomass ( B ) was 46 g dry wt m−2 giving an annual P/ B ratio of 3.0, and a P/Bmax ratio of 1.3.  相似文献

An investigation covering hydrography, chemistry, vascular and cryptogamic plants, nitrogen fixation, phytoplankton biomass and production, and zooplankton was carried out from April to November 1976 in tarn in W Norway, The volume of the tarn was 18000 m3 and the turnover time about 30 d. Temperature ranged between 3.6 and 23.4°C and pH between 4.8 and 5.5. Nuphar luteum and Carex rostrata were the two dominating vasculars-with biomasses of 117 and 97 g m−2, respectively The biomass of the bryophytes ( Sphagnum spp.) was about 510 g m−2 and the production of the order 0.2–2.1 μg (mg d.w.)−1h−1. Nitrogen fixation in association with Sphagnum spp. was estimated at 25 g yr−1 for the whole tarn. Phytoplankton was dominated by diatoms, green algae and chrysophyceans. The chlorophyll a content ranged from 2 to 20 mg m−3 and the carbon assimilation rates from 0.03 to 20 mg C m−3h−1 at 0–4 m depths. Production in the period was of the magnitude 22 g C m−2. The copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis was the most common netzooplankter. Large numbers of rotationrians were found during summer.  相似文献

Seasonal measurements of the oxygen and nitrate uptake by a reed swamp sediment were carried out in a shallow, eutrophic Danish lake, Arreskov Sø. The oxidation of organic carbon in the sediment by aerobic and nitrate respiration was 290 and 188 g C m−2 yr−1 respectively. During winter, nitrate respiration amounted to 94% of the total carbon oxidation, whereas it was zero during summer. On an annual basis nitrate respiration constituted 39% of total respiration. Sediment nitrate uptake was correlated to nitrate concentration. In consequence of this the nitrate uptake rates varied during the year from zero in summer to 55 mg N m−2 d−1 in spring.
Oxygen uptake rates varied from 30 to 250 mg O2 m−2 h−1 during the year, with a maximum uptake in August. The oxygen uptake per year was calculated to 860 g O2 m−2. The oxygen uptake rate was correlated to lake temperature and Kjeldahl nitrogen content of the sediment. The oxygen uptake rate, however, showed no correlation with loss on ignition of the sediment. A Q10-value of 2.2 was found for lake measurements in the temperature interval of 5–15°C. The corresponding O10-value in the laboratory was 2.6. A high microbial biomass indicated by the maximum content of Kjeldahl nitrogen and the lowest ratio of loss on ignition on Kjeldahl nitrogen appeared in late August, when the maximum oxygen uptake occurred. The oxygen uptake rate increased during the time interval from sampling to the start of the experiments.  相似文献

A phytoplankton investigation was carried out in the subalpine, low-productive Norwegian lake Øvre Heimdalsvatn in 1969–70 and 1972. This paper describes the temporal and spatial distribution of the standing stock of phytoplankton, and phytoplankton primary productivity. The annual average primary productivity in 1972 was 4.0–4.9 mg C m−3 d−1; the annual average standing stock varied from 120 mg m−3 (freshweight) in 1969–70, to 250 mg m−3 in 1972. Phytoplankton species composition and size distribution is discussed. Throughout the year the phytoplankton is dominated by small (ultraplankton) species; μ-algae (< 5 μm) showed cell concentrations up to 15 mill. cells 1−1. The dominating group was chrysophytes; cryptophytes, dinoflagellates or green algae were at times abundant. A phytoplankton monthly budget and a diagram showing annual average carbon flow through the standing stock of phytoplankton are presented; the phytoplankton dynamics in Øvre Heimdalsvatn is compared to that of other low-productive lakes.  相似文献

Production and food intake by an herbivorous pupfish population ( Cyprinodon nevadensis amargosae ) living in the outflow of a thermal artesian well (Tecopa Bore) near Death Valley, California is described. Water issues from the ground at 47.5° C and cools 8.12° C before leaving the study area 300 m from the source. High stream temperatures restricted the pupfish population to some 41 % of the study area, with a resulting mean density of 89 individuals m−2 (range = 13 to 196m−2). Biomass estimates ranged from 7 kcal m−2 to 42 kcal m−2. The mean annual standing crop of pupfishes (24 kcal m−2) turned over about five times annually. Growth rates were highest in juveniles (♂= 9.5% day−1) and slowest in large adults (♀= 08% day−1). Monthly production ranged from 22 kcal m−2 in September to 3 kcal m−2 in July and August. Pupfish in Tecopa Bore fed on algae and detritus, ingesting 1941 kcal m−2 yr−1 or 17.5% of the annual net primary production. 119 kcal m−2 yr−1 was deposited in growth. This latter value is approximately ten times greater than values previously reported for large carnivorous fishes but is comparable lo values reported for herbivorous fishes under pond culture.  相似文献

The dynamics of sedimentary detritus was examined over a 17-month period in a third-order mountain stream in Colorado. Autumnal and vernal peaks in total detritus standing crop (197 g and 165 g AFDW m−2, respectively) were associated with leaf abscission and ice out. The flushing action of snowmelt runoff rapidly reduced benthic detritus to 14 g AFDW m−2. Detrital size classes differentially contributed to temporal fluctuations in total detritus. The autumnal maximum was largely comprised of coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM), primarily leaf litter. The large increase following ice out was mainly due to fine detritus (FPOM, 0.45–75 μm) which accounted for > 50% of benthic detritus during 9 months of the year. Evidence suggests that changes in standing crop and particle size distribution during the extended period of ice cover (November-March) resulted from in situ processing rather than transport. Despite major differences in climate, geochemistry and hydrology, the Colorado stream exhibited patterns of detrital dynamics remarkably similar to an eastern deciduous forest stream.  相似文献

Aquaria with added river red gum, Eucalyptus camaldulensis , litter became hypoxic, with decreased pH and contained up to 30 mg 1−1 tannin and lignin. Survival of golden perch, Macquaria ambigua , larvae in aquaria treated with a simulated annual litter density of 450 g m−2 for 72 h was 14·9% for 15-day-old larvae and 0% for 8-day-old larvae. A litter density of 1223 g m−2 resulted in total mortality for both age groups of larvae. Aeration increased survival of larvae to a minimum of 68·8% in 1223 g m−2 litter treatments compared to 89·8% in aerated controls and 86·8% in non-aerated controls. A kinetic behavioural assay was used to detect alarm responses in golden perch larvae and juveniles exposed to leachates from river red gum bark, leaves and wood. Eight-day-old larvae exposed to bark and wood leachates (0·001–10 g 1−1) exhibited an initial period of hyperactivity, followed by a concentration-dependent decrease in spontaneous activity. Larvae exposed to leaf leachates displayed only a decrease in spontaneous activity. Four-month-old juveniles exposed to wood leachates were also initially hyperactive, then progressively developed mild hypoactivity at increasing leachate concentrations. Juveniles exposed to wood leachates at 20g 1−1 for 30min suffered 97·5% mortality in 96 h. Wood leachates induced dose-dependent lamellar fusion, epithelial dissociation and necrosis in the gills. The presence of toxic leachates and low oxygen availability in flooded river red gum forests may make these habitats unsuitable as nursery areas for native fish.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Mean annual density and biomass () of Cambarus bartonii in an Appalachian mountain stream (U.S.A.) was 12 individuals m−2 and 1669 mg (ash-free dry weight) m−2.
2. Annual production ( P ) of C bartonii was 961 mg AFDW m−2. Despite high biomass, low growth rates resulted in low production and a low P/ ratio of 0.58.
3. While C bartonii constituted 61% of the total macroinvertebrate biomass, it contributed only 13% of annual community secondary production.
4. Litter processing was positively related to temperature and crayfish size. Cambariis bartotnii was estimated to comminute 36 g m−2 y−1 of leaf litter (>1 mm2) to 24 g m−>2 y−1 fine particulate material (<1 mm2). The annual pattern of litter comminution by crayfish was regulated by temperature. As a result, >5()% of shredding activity by crayfish occurred from June to September which was also the period of lowest litter standing crops and activity of other shredding macroinvertebrates.
5. We speculate that during summer crayfish play an important role in temperate woodland streams by converting slowly processed leaf litter species (e.g. Rhododendron ) to fine particles which are then available to collector-gatherers (e.g. Chironomidae, Oligochaeta).  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation activity was determined for Lotus tenuis. Medicago lupulina and Trifolium pratense . The three species grew in clones in grassland in an area reclaimed from brackish water in the 1940s. The N2[C2H2]-fixation was measured in soil cores throughout 1974 and 1975. From cores taken in dense and uniform stands of the species, the yearly N2[C2H2]-fixation at maximum cover was estimated. L. tenuis fixed about 4 g N m−2 yr−1 (area with max. cover 130%), i.e. 30–56% of its requirement. Both M. lupulina and T. pratense fixed about 7 g N m−2 yr−1 (maximum cover 37% and 80%) i.e. 67% of their N-requirement. Average N2[C2H2]-fixation for the whole area was 0.4 g N m−2 yr−1, considerably less than the N-addition through rainfall.  相似文献

Phytoplankton production and physico-chemical parameters were measured during the summers of 1976 and 1977 in Lake 95 at 60°52'N, 46°01'W (area 8 ha, z 6.9 m). The duration of lake stratification during summer was weather dependent. Concentrations of total-CO2 ranged from 2.04 mg l−1 (surface) to 4.02 mg l−1 (bottom during stratification). Nutrient concentrations were generally low, and systematic seasonal variation could not be detected with certainty. Vertical distribution of primary production typically showed a distinct maximum followed by a decline with depth. The low production, both per unit area (max. 60 mg C m−2 d−1) and per unit volume (max, 14.3 mg C m−3 d−1), and the annual production of 4.7 g C m−2 classified the lake as extremely oligotrophic.  相似文献

Abstract. Settlement timing and differential settlement for the larval stage of the green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis , in the southern Gulf of Maine was studied during the summer of 1996. Settlement densities on astroturf panels were highest in June and early July (13 to 37 m −2 d−1), and peaked in mid-June (199 m−2 d−1). Settlement was low to nonexistent from mid-July through August (0 to 2 m−2 d−1). During the peak in settlement, no selection for substrate type was observed. In the remainder of the settlement period, differential settlement occurred, with a preference for substrate covered with live coralline algae. Test diameter of newly settled urchins varied among the substrates, with urchins settling on live coralline algae having the largest test diameter (0.43 ± 0.01 mm). There were no differences in test diameter among the different weeks in which sampling was done. Sustained onshore winds occurred only during peak settlement, suggesting that wind drift currents may concentrate larvae and influence patterns of larval settlement.  相似文献

Abstract. Cyperus longus L. , which has a widespread but disjunct distribution throughout Europe and extends northwards into Britain, was found to be a C4 species based upon its Kranz leaf anatomy, low CO2 compensation point and the labelling of malate as an early product of 14CO2 fixation. The photosynthetic characteristics of C. longus are similar to many other C4 species with a high maximum rate of photosynthesis (> 1.5 mg CO2 m −2 s −1) and a relatively high temperature optimum (30–35°C), but unlike many C4 species the rate of photosynthesis does not decline rapidly below the optimum temperature and a substantial rate (0.6 mgCO2 m−2s−1)occursat 15°C. Leaf extension is very slow at 15°C and shows a curvilinear response to temperatures between 15 and 25°C. Leaves extend at a rate of almost 4 cm d−1 at 25°C.  相似文献

For the one year period considered, it is calculated that 683.5 g m-2 plant litter entered the study area site. Of the six slugs studied, Arion intermedius Normand, the smallest species, had the highest overall consumption rate on the nine test foods (29.1 ± 0.9 mg dry wt g live wt-1 d-1) and the highest overall mean assimilation efficiency (72.0 + 0.9%). The mean faecal production for each of the six slug species was very similar, ranging from 8.4 to 9.9 mg dry wt g live wt-1 d-1. Using regression equations of food consumed on faeces produced, it is estimated that the slug fauna each year consumes 8.4% of the leaf litter input and 6.5% of the total available plant litter. Of the plant material consumed, 13.8 g dry wt m-2 are deposited annually as faeces. The role of slugs in decomposition processes is discussed and compared with that of other soil organisms.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The life cycle of Ephemerella major Klapalek in a chalk trout stream in Belgium took 1 year. Emergence was highly synchronized with a flight period from mid-May to mid-June. Tiny nymphs occurred from June to late August.
2. The mean instantaneous growth rate was high in autumn (3.6% wet wt day−1), very low from November to February (0.8% wet wt day−1) and high until emergence (2.3% wet wt day−1); short day length seemed to be the major factor reducing growth rate during winter.
3. Mortality was close to zero during winter and 1.4—1.7% day−1during other seasons. Total mortality from egg to adult was 99.6%.
4. The annual production was about 9g wet wt m−2 year−1 and the annual P/ ratio was 7.5. There was good agreement between the production values estimated by four methods. Production rate was highest in May (13 mg wet wt m−2 day−1) and zero in February.  相似文献

Soil/litter inhabiting annelids and arthropods were studied for one year in a mesic deciduous woodland, Andersby ängsbackar, one of the most northerly areas in Sweden to possess unbroken oak/hazel vegetation. Lumbricidae, Enchytraeidae, Collembola, Acari, Coleoptera, Diptera and Araneae were important faunal groups with regard to abundance, biomass and respiratory metabolism. Annual mean biomass (8 g dw m−2) and respiration (450 kJ m −2 yr−1) of the joint annelid and arthropod community were dominated by lumbricids (76 and 50%, respectively). The biomass and respiration of the annelids and arthropods at Andersby were lower than in some other oak forests in northwestern Europe, probably because of lower soil temperature, lower litter supply and because some lumbricid and diplopod species were at their northern border of distribution.
Of the annual respiration, saprovores, fungivores, carnivores and root-feeders contributed 65, 19, 14 and 1.5%, respectively. The saprovore percentage was lower at Andersby than at other mull sites compared, probably as an effect of the northern climate, which might favour microbial saprovory. The fungivore and carnivore percentages were higher, which might be due to the presence of a litter layer throughout the year.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Populations of Stalls lutaria L. were sampled quantitatively at about monthly intervals during 3 years at two localities in the macrophyte rich River Suså, Denmark.
2. The life cycle was univoltine. The larvae hatched in June-July, and the initial S. lutaria population densities varied between 10 and 370 ind. m−2. These differences were probably due to extreme variations in stream discharge during the period of recruitment, high velocities preventing the small swimming larvae from reaching the sediment.
3. The S. lutaria rate of elimination varied between 0.11 and 1.47% d−1at the two localities. The high rate of elimination was possibly due to fish predation.
4. The growth rates varied between 0.54 and 15% d−1. Growth rates differed between localities and years.
5. Numbers of potential prey organisms were not higher in sample units with S. lutaria than in sample units without S. lutaria . Numbers of leeches, which were potential competitors, did not differ significantly in sample units with and without S. lutaria .
6. Production of S. lutaria varied between 0.16 and 2.49 g ash free dry weight m−2 y−1, and the P/ ratios varied between 3.0 and 7.3 y−1. The P/ ratios increased significantly with increasing rate of elimination.  相似文献
