Drought stress enhances the production of superoxide radical (O2 ._) and superoxide dismutase catalyses dismutation of it to H2O2 and O2, and hence provides a first line of defense against oxidative stress. Over-expression of a cytosolic copper-zinc superoxide dismutase, cloned from Potentilla atrosanguinea (PaSOD), in potato (Solanum tuberosum ssp. tuberosum L. cv. Kufri Sutlej) resulted in enhanced net photosynthetic rates (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs) compared to that in the wild type (WT) plants under control (irrigated) as well as drought stress conditions. Drought stress declined leaf water potential, PN, gs, photosystem II activity, and chlorophyll content, but increased proline and O2 ._ content more in WT than transgenic potato plants (SS5). The significantly higher SOD activity in SS5 coincided well with lower O2 ._ content suggesting its role in maintaining higher gs and PN in transgenic potato plants.  相似文献

Thirty-days-old plants of two cultivars of okra (Hibiscus esculentus L.), Sabzpari and Chinese-red, were subjected for 30 d to two water regimes (100 and 60 % field capacity). Leaf water potential and osmotic potential of both lines decreased significantly with the imposition of drought. Both the leaf pressure potential and osmotic adjustment were much lower in Chinese-red than those in Sabzpari. Chlorophyll (Chl) b content increased, whereas Chl a content remained unchanged and thus Chl a/b ratios were reduced in both lines. Drought stress also caused a significant reduction in net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), and water use efficiency (WUE) especially in cv. Sabzpari. The lines did not differ in intrinsic WUE (P Ngs) or intercellular/ambient CO2 ratio. Overall, the growth of two okra cultivars was positively correlated with P N, but not with g s or P N/E, and negatively correlated with osmotic adjustment.  相似文献

Photosynthetic responses of Populus przewalski subjected to drought stress   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Cuttings of P. przewalski were exposed to two different watering regimes which were watered to 100 and 25 % of field capacity (WW and WS, respectively). Drought stress not only significantly decreased net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) (Fv/Fm and yield), and increased intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) under controlled optimal conditions, but also altered the diurnal changes of gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, and WUEi. On the other hand, WS also affected the P N-photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) response curve. Under drought stress, P N peak appeared earlier (at about 10:30 of local time) than under WW condition (at about 12:30). At midday, there was a depression in P N for WS plants, but not for WW plants, and it could be caused by the whole microclimate, especially high temperature, low relative humidity, and high PAR. There were stomatal and non-stomatal limitations to photosynthesis. Stomatal limitation dominated in the morning, and low P N at midday was caused by both stomatal and non-stomatal limitations, whereas non-stomatal limitation dominated in the afternoon. In addition, drought stress also increased compensation irradiance and dark respiration rate, and decreased saturation irradiance and maximum net photosynthetic rate. Thus drought stress decreased plant assimilation and increased dissimilation through affected gas exchange, the diurnal pattern of gas exchange, and photosynthesis-PAR response curve, thereby reducing plant growth and productivity.  相似文献

To determine the effects of rootstock choice on the scion response to drought stress, we compared the vegetative growth, biomass accumulation, gas exchange, and water-use efficiency (WUE) of ??Gale Gala?? apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) trees grafted onto nine wild Chinese Malus rootstocks. Compared with the well-watered control, drought treatment limited growth, as manifested by smaller increments in plant height (PH), trunk diameter (TD), total fresh biomass (TB), total dry biomass (TDB), total leaf area (LA), and relative growth rate (RGR). The extent of this effect differed among rootstocks. Stress conditions led to increases in the root/shoot ratio (RSR), leaf thickness (LT), water-holding capacity (WHC), carbon isotope composition (??13C), and WUE. Decreases were noted in stomatal density (SD), leaf relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll content (Chl), net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (g s), again varying by rootstock. Those that are generally considered more drought-tolerant, e.g., M. sieversii, M. prunifolia, and M. toringoides, had smaller declines in PH, TD, TB, TDB, LA, RGR, SD, RWC, Chl, P N, E, and g s and proportionally greater increases in RSR, LT, WHC, ??13C, and WUE compared with the droughtsensitive M. hupehensis and M. sieboldii. These results suggest that moisture stress has a significant dwarfing effect in the latter two species. Based on WUE calculations, trees on drought-tolerant rootstocks showed higher tolerance when stressed, whereas those on drought-sensitive rootstocks were less tolerant, as indicated by their lower WUE values.  相似文献

The photosynthetic characterization of the oriental lily (Lilium) cv. Sorbonne and its response to increasing water stress were analyzed based on the net photosynthetic rate (P n), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), and stomatal limitation (Ls) in the Horqin Sandy Land of western China. A photosynthesis-PAR response curve was constructed to obtain light-compensation and light-saturation points (LCP and LSP), the maximum photosynthetic rates (P max) and dark respiration rates (R D). The growth of lilies in the pots was analyzed after anthesis. Various intensities of water stress (5, 10, and 20 days without water, and an unstressed control) were applied. The results indicated that drought stress not only significantly decreased P n, E, g s, photosynthetic pigment content (Chl a, Chl b, and Chl (a + b)) and increased intrinsic water use efficiency (WUE), but also altered the diurnal pattern of gas exchange. Drought stress also affected the photosynthesis (P n)-PAR response curve. Drought stress increased LCP and R D and decreased LSP and P max. There were both stomatal and nonstomatal limitations to photosynthesis. Stomatal limitation dominated in the morning, whereas nonstomatal limitation dominated in the afternoon. Thus, drought stress decreased potential photosynthetic capacity and affected the diurnal pattern of gas exchange and P n-PAR response curves, thereby reducing plant quality (lower plant height, flower length, flower diameter, and leaf area). Water stress is likely the main limitation to primary photosynthetic process in the lily. Appropriate watering is recommended to improve photosynthetic efficiency and alleviate photodamage, which will increase the commercial value of the lily in the Horqin Sandy Land.  相似文献

The photosynthetic characterization of Populus euphratica and their response to increasing groundwater depth and temperature were analyzed based on net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE) and stomatal limitation (Ls) measured by a portable gas-exchange system (LI-6400) in the lower reaches of the Tarim River. Light-response curves were constructed to obtain light-compensation and light-saturation points (LCP and LSP), maximum photosynthetic rates (P max), quantum yields (AQY), and dark respiration rates (R D). The growth condition of P. euphratica, soil moisture, and groundwater depth in the plots were analyzed by field investigation. The results showed that the growth condition and photosynthetic characterization of P. euphratica were closely related to groundwater depth. The rational groundwater depth for the normal growth and photosynthesis was 3–5 m, the stress groundwater depth for mild drought was more than 5 m, for moderate drought was more than 6 m, for severe drought was more than 7 m. However, P. euphratica could keep normal growth through a strong drought resistance depended on the stomatal limitation and osmotic adjustment when it faced mild or moderate drought stress, respectively, at a normal temperature (25°C). High temperature (40°C) significantly reduced P N and drought stress exacerbated the damage of high temperature to the photosynthesis. Moreover, P. euphratica would prioritize the resistance of high temperature when it encountered the interaction between heat shock and water deficit through the stomata open unequally to improve the transpiration of leaves to dissipate overheating at the cost of low WUE, and then resist water stress through the osmotic adjustment or the stomatal limitation.  相似文献

Changes in net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular CO2 concentrations (Ci), transpiration rate (E) and water use efficiency (WUE) were measured in Plantago major L. plants grown under sufficient soil water supply or under soil water stress conditions. The plants had high PN in a wide range of soil water potential and temperature regimes. Soil water had little effect on PN under ambient CO2 concentrations, which was explained by a high carboxylation rate, but increased the dark respiration rate. Carboxylation activity at low Ci depended on RuBP regeneration, whereas at high Ci it depended on the phosphate regeneration rate. The gs and E values were low in plants under stress as compared to the controls that resulted in an increase of WUE. The results obtained show that Plantago major plants have different ways of adaptation to soil water deficit conditions.  相似文献

Three-month-old mulberry (Morus alba L.) cultivars (salt tolerant cv. S1 and salt sensitive cv. ATP) were subjected to different concentrations of NaCl for 12 d. Leaf area, dry mass accumulation, total chlorophyll (Chl) content, net CO2 assimilation rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and transpiration rate (E) declined, and intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) increased. The changes in these parameters were dependent on stress severity and duration, and differed between the two cultivars. The tolerant cultivar showed a lesser reduction in P N and g s coupled with a better C i and water use efficiency (WUE) than the sensitive cultivar.  相似文献

A key objective for sustainable agriculture and forestry is to breed plants with both high carbon gain and water-use efficiency (WUE). At the level of leaf physiology, this implies increasing net photosynthesis (A N) relative to stomatal conductance (g s). Here, we review evidence for CO2 diffusional constraints on photosynthesis and WUE. Analyzing past observations for an extensive pool of crop and wild plant species that vary widely in mesophyll conductance to CO2 (g m), g s, and foliage A N, it was shown that both g s and g m limit A N, although the relative importance of each of the two conductances depends on species and conditions. Based on Fick’s law of diffusion, intrinsic WUE (the ratio A N/g s) should correlate on the ratio g m/g s, and not g m itself. Such a correlation is indeed often observed in the data. However, since besides diffusion A N also depends on photosynthetic capacity (i.e., V c,max), this relationship is not always sustained. It was shown that only in a very few cases, genotype selection has resulted in simultaneous increases of both A N and WUE. In fact, such a response has never been observed in genetically modified plants specifically engineered for either reduced g s or enhanced g m. Although increasing g m alone would result in increasing photosynthesis, and potentially increasing WUE, in practice, higher WUE seems to be only achieved when there are no parallel changes in g s. We conclude that for simultaneous improvement of A N and WUE, genetic manipulation of g m should avoid parallel changes in g s, and we suggest that the appropriate trait for selection for enhanced WUE is increased g m/g s.  相似文献

Drought is a great challenge to agricultural production, and cultivation of drought‐tolerant or water use‐efficient cultivars is important to ensure high biomass yields for bio‐refining and bioenergy. Here, we evaluated drought tolerance of four C3 species, Dactylis glomerata cvs. Sevenop and Amba, Festuca arundinacea cvs. Jordane and Kora, Phalaris arundinacea cvs. Bamse and Chieftain and Festulolium pabulare cv. Hykor, and two C4 species Miscanthus × giganteus and M. lutarioriparius. Control (irrigated) and drought‐treated plants were grown on coarse and loamy sand in 1 m2 lysimeter plots where rain was excluded. Drought periods started after harvest and lasted until 80% of available soil water had been used. Drought caused a decrease in dry matter yield (DM; P < 0.001) for all species and cultivars during the drought period. Cultivars Sevenop, Kora and Jordane produced DM at equal levels and higher than the other C3 cultivars in control and drought‐treated plots both during and after the drought period. Negative correlations were observed between stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf water potential (P < 0.01) and positive correlations between gs and DM (P < 0.05) indicating that gs might be suitable for assessment of drought stress. There were indications of positive associations between plants carbon isotope composition and water use efficiency (WUE) as well as DM under well‐watered conditions. Compared to control, drought‐treated plots showed increased growth in the period after drought stress. Thus, the drought events did not affect total biomass production (DMtotal) of the whole growing season. During drought stress and the whole growing season, WUE was higher in drought‐treated compared to control plots, so it seems possible to save water without loss of biomass. Across soil types, M. lutarioriparius had the highest DMtotal (15.0 t ha?1), WUEtotal (3.6 g L?1) and radiation use efficiency (2.3 g MJ?1) of the evaluated grasses.  相似文献

Yields of wheat in semiarid and arid zones are limited by drought, and water condition is very important at each stage of development. Studies carried out at Loess Plateau in the northwestern part of China indicated that yield of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Dingxi 81-392 was reduced by 41% when subjected to water stress. The effects of two water regimens on net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) were investigated at the jointing, booting, anthesis, and grain filling stages. Low soil moisture in comparison to adequate one had invariably reduced P N during the diurnal variations at the four growth stages. P N and g s in both soil moisture regimes was maximally reduced at midday. C i and the stomatal limitation fluctuated remarkably during photosynthesis midday depression processes, especially at the grain filling stage. Hence atmospheric drought at midday was one of the direct causes inducing stomata closure and the g s depression, but it was beneficial for maintaining stable intrinsic water use efficiency. Fluctuation in C i implicated that non-stomatal limitation also plays an important role during the period of photosynthesis midday depression. Consequently stomatal and/or non-stomatal limitation are the possible cause of the midday photosynthesis decline.  相似文献

The combination of two scion-one rootstock was used for two apple cultivars, ‘Pink Lady’ and ‘Qinguan’, budded on the same, one-year-old Malus hupehensis (Pamp.) Rehd. to reduce the impact of root and pot size and in order to understand the growth, water-use efficiency (WUE), and chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics. The two-scion grafted trees were planted in plastic pots under two water regimes, i.e. 70% field capacity (FC) and 55% FC. Results indicated that different scions were affected differently by drought stress. ‘Pink Lady’ had higher net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and transpiration rate (E) compared with ‘Qinguan’ under both water treatments. However, ‘Qinguan’ had lower minimal fluorescence (F0), higher maximum fluorescence (Fm), and higher maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) than ‘Pink Lady’ at 55% FC. Moreover, ‘Qinguan’ had larger shoot dry mass (ShDM) and higher intrinsic WUEI than ‘Pink Lady’ under both water status. Gas-exchange and growth parameters, except for P N and scion diameter, were significantly affected by the cultivar and water treatment. At 70% FC, ShDM was significantly correlated with WUEI. Moreover, WUEI was negatively linearly correlated with g s at either 70 or 55% FC. These results might indicate that ‘Pink Lady’ was more sensitive to drought than ‘Qinguan’. ‘Qinguan’ apple was able to improve WUE more than ‘Pink Lady’ under both well-watered and drought conditions. The growth parameters and photosynthetic capacity of two different scions showed that the combination of double scion-one rootstock might eliminate the influences of the rootstock and pot size.  相似文献

The photosynthetic responses to salt stress were examined in a wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Asakaze)–barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Manas) 7H addition line having elevated salt tolerance and compared to the parental wheat genotype. For this purpose, increasing NaCl concentrations up to 300 mM were applied and followed by a 7-day recovery period. Up to moderate salt stress (200 mM NaCl), forcible stomatal closure, parallel with a reduction in the net assimilation rate (P N), was only observed in wheat, but not in the 7H addition line or barley. Since the photosynthetic electron transport processes of wheat were not affected by NaCl, the impairment in P N could largely be accounted for the salt-induced decline in stomatal conductance (g s), accompanied by depressed intercellular CO2 concentration and carboxylation efficiency. Both, P N and nonstomatal limitation factors (Lns) were practically unaffected by moderate salt stress in barley and in the 7H addition line due to the sustained g s, which might be an efficient strategy to maintain the efficient photosynthetic activity and biomass production. At 300 mM NaCl, both P N and g s decreased significantly in all the genotypes, but the changes in P N and Lns in the 7H addition line were more favourable similar to those in wheat. The downregulation of photosynthetic electron transport processes around PSII, accompanied by increases in the quantum yield of regulated energy dissipation and of the donor side limitation of PSI without damage to PSII, was observed in the addition line and barley during severe stress. Incomplete recovery of P N was observed in the 7H addition line as a result of declined PSII activity probably caused by enhanced cyclic electron flow around PSI. These results suggest that the better photosynthetic tolerance to moderate salt stress of barley can be manifested in the 7H addition line which may be a suitable candidate for improving salt tolerance of wheat.  相似文献

Pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) has a high tolerance to drought and soil salinity. Although adult pistachio trees are well known to be drought tolerant, the studies on physiological adaptation of pistachio cultivars to drought are limited. Therefore, three pistachio cultivars, i.e., Akbari, Kaleghochi, and Ohadi were subjected to three osmotic drought stress treatments: control (?0.1 MPa), moderate (?0.75 MPa) and severe drought (?1.5 MPa) stress using PEG 6000 for a 14-day period. All drought stress treatments decreased net photosynthesis (P n), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), and transpiration rate (E), but Ohadi maintained better its photosynthetic capacity compared to Akbari and Kaleghochi. Maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (F v /F m), effective PSII quantum yield (ΦPSII) and photochemical quenching (qP) were also reduced. The chlorophyll fluorescence parameters indicated that Akbari was more susceptible to the applied drought stress. Drought stress levels decreased chlorophyll pigments, fresh weight, stem elongation, leaf nitrogen content (N), leaf water potential and increased water use efficiency (WUE). Proline increased strongly under drought stress for Akbari. After 2 weeks of stress a recovery of 2 weeks was applied. This period was insufficient to fully restore the negative effects of the applied stress on the studied cultivars. Based on the reduction of photosynthesis and the increase of the proline content Akbari seems more sensitive to the applied drought stress.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), stomatal conductance (gs), and stomatal limitation (Ls) were investigated in two Syringa species. The saturation irradiance (SI) was 400 µmol m-2s-1 for S. pinnatifolia and 1 700 µmol m-2s-1 for S. oblata. Compared with S. oblata, S. pinnatifolia had extremely low g s . Unlike S. oblata, the maximal photosynthetic rate (Pmax) in S. pinnatifoliaoccurred around 08:00 and then fell down, indicating this species was sensitive to higher temperature and high photosynthetic photon flux density. However, such phenomenon was interrupted by the leaf development rhythms before summer. A relatively lower PN together with a lower leaf area and shoot growth showed the capacity for carbon assimilation was poorer in S. pinnatifolia.  相似文献

Response of net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (c i), and photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) of photosystem 2 (PS2) was assessed in Eucalyptus cladocalyx grown for long duration at 800 (C800) or 380 (C380) µmol mol-1 CO2 concentration under sufficient water supply or under water stress. The well-watered plants at C800 showed a 2.2 fold enhancement of P N without any change in g s. Under both C800 and C380, water stress decreased P N and g s significantly without any substantial reduction of c i, suggesting that both stomatal and non-stomatal factors regulated P N. However, the photosynthetic efficiency of PS2 was not altered.  相似文献

Water and nitrogen supply are the two primary factors limiting productivity of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). In our study, two winter wheat varieties, Xinong 979 and large-spike wheat, were evaluated for their physiological responses to different levels of nitrogen and water status during their seedling stage grown in a phytotron. Our results indicated that drought stress greatly reduced the net photosynthetic rate (Pn), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (Gs), but with a greater increase in instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE). At the meantime, the nitrogen (N) supply improved photosynthetic efficiency under water deficit. Parameters inferred from chlorophyll a measurements, i.e., photochemical quenching coefficient (qP), the maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), the quantum yield of photosystemII(ΦPSII), and the apparent photosynthetic electron transport rate (ETR) decreased under water stress at all nitrogen levels and declined in N-deficient plants. The root–shoot ratio (R/S) increased slightly with water stress at a low N level; the smallest root–shoot ratio was found at a high N level and moderate drought stress treatment. These results suggest that an appropriate nitrogen supply may be necessary to enhance drought resistance in wheat by improving photosynthetic efficiency and relieving photoinhibition under drought stress. However, an excessive N supply had no effect on drought resistance, which even showed an adverse effect on plant growth. Comparing the two cultivars, Xinong 979 has a stronger drought resistance compared with large-spike wheat under N deficiency.  相似文献

In view of predicted climatic changes for the Mediterranean region, study of high temperature and drought impacts on physiological responses of endangered species regains relevance. In this context, micropropagated plants of Tuberaria major, a critically endangered species, endemic of Algarve, were transferred to a controlled-environment cabinet with day/night temperatures set at 25/18°C (Reference) or 32/21°C (HT). After 15 days of HT acclimation, some plants were subjected to progressive drought followed by rewatering. The enhancement of temperature alone did not affect water relations and photosynthetic rates (P N) but the stomatal conductance (g s) exhibited a 3-fold increase in comparison with reference plants. The maximum quantum yield of photosystem (PS) II (Fv/Fm), the effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII), carotenoid (Car) and anthocyanin content enhanced, whereas the quantum yields of regulated (ΦNPQ) and nonregulated (ΦNO) energy dissipation decreased. Drought combined with HT reduced predawn leaf water potential to values of about ?1.3 MPa, which had adverse effects on gas exchange and PSII activity. Values of P N and g s were 71 and 79% lower than those of HT plants. An impairment of photochemical activity was also observed: the decrease in ΦPSII and the increase of ΦNPQ. However, an irreversible photoinhibitory damage had not occurred. Carotenoid and anthocyanin content remained elevated and soluble sugars (SS) increased twice, whereas proline and MDA accumulation was not detected. On the first 24 h after water-stress relief, g s, P N, ΦPSII, and ΦNPQ did not recover, but SS returned to the reference level. Overall, T. major acquired an adequate capacity for a protection against the development of oxidative stress during drought and water recovery under HT. These findings suggest that T. major is prepared to deal with predicted climate changes.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), and stomatal limitation (Ls) of Populus euphratica grown at different groundwater depths in the arid region were measured. g s of the trees with groundwater depth at 4.74 m (D4) and 5.82 m (D5) were lower and a little higher than that at 3.82 m (D3), respectively. Compared with C i and Ls of the D3 trees, C i decreased and Ls increased at 4.74 m, however, Ci increased and Ls decreased at D5. Hence photosynthetic reduction of P. euphratica was attributed to either stomatal closure or non-stomatal factors depending on the groundwater depths in the plant locations. P N of the D3 trees was significantly higher than those at D4 or D5. The trees of D4 and D5 did not show a significant difference in their P N, indicating that there are mechanisms of P. euphratica tolerance to mild and moderate drought stress.  相似文献

Heat and drought stress frequently occur together, however, their impact on plant growth and photosynthesis (PN) is unclear. The frequency, duration and severity of heat and drought stress events are predicted to increase in the future, having severe implications for agricultural productivity and food security. To assess the impact on plant gas exchange, physiology and morphology we grew drought tolerant and sensitive varieties of C3 sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and C4 maize (Zea mays) under conditions of elevated temperature for 4 weeks prior to the imposition of water deficit. The negative impact of temperature on PN was most apparent in sunflower. The drought tolerant sunflower retained ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO) activity under heat stress to a greater extent than its drought sensitive counterpart. Maize exhibited no varietal difference in response to increased temperature. In contrast to previous studies, where a sudden rise in temperature induced an increase in stomatal conductance (Gs), we observed no change or a reduction in Gs with elevated temperature, which alongside lower leaf area mitigated the impact of drought at the higher temperature. The drought tolerant sunflower and maize varieties exhibited greater investment in root‐systems, allowing greater uptake of the available soil water. Elevated temperatures associated with heat‐waves will have profound negative impacts on crop growth in both sunflower and maize, but the deleterious effect on PN was less apparent in the drought tolerant sunflower and both maize varieties. As C4 plants generally exhibit water use efficiency (WUE) and resistance to heat stress, selection on the basis of tolerance to heat and drought stress would be more beneficial to the yields of C3 crops cultivated in drought prone semi‐arid regions.  相似文献
