Background and AimsGrasses in subfamily Pooideae live in some of the world’s harshest terrestrial environments, from frigid boreal zones to the arid windswept steppe. It is hypothesized that the climate distribution of species within this group is driven by differences in climatic tolerance, and that tolerance can be partially explained by variation in stomatal traits.MethodsWe determined the aridity index (AI) and minimum temperature of the coldest month (MTCM) for 22 diverse Pooideae accessions and one outgroup, and used comparative methods to assess predicted relationships for climate traits versus fitness traits, stomatal diffusive conductance to water (gw) and speed of stomatal closure following drought and/or cold.Key ResultsResults demonstrate that AI and MTCM predict variation in survival/regreening following drought/cold, and gw under drought/cold is positively correlated with δ 13C-measured water use efficiency (WUE). However, the relationship between climate traits and fitness under drought/cold was not explained by gw or speed of stomatal closure.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that Pooideae distributions are at least partly determined by tolerance to aridity and above-freezing cold, but that variation in tolerance is not uniformly explained by variation in stomatal traits. 相似文献

The regional occupancy and local abundance of species are affected by various species traits, but their relative effects are poorly understood. We studied the relationships between species traits and occupancy (i.e., proportion of sites occupied) or abundance (i.e., mean local abundance at occupied sites) of stream invertebrates using small‐grained data (i.e., local stream sites) across a large spatial extent (i.e., three drainage basins). We found a significant, yet rather weak, linear relationship between occupancy and abundance. However, occupancy was strongly related to niche position (NP), but it showed a weaker relationship with niche breadth (NB). Abundance was at best weakly related to these explanatory niche‐based variables. Biological traits, including feeding modes, habit traits, dispersal modes and body size classes, were generally less important in accounting for variation in occupancy and abundance. Our findings showed that the regional occupancy of stream invertebrate species is mostly related to niche characteristics, in particular, NP. However, the effects of NB on occupancy were affected by the measure itself. We conclude that niche characteristics determine the regional occupancy of species at relatively large spatial extents, suggesting that species distributions are determined by environmental variation among sites. 相似文献

Cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibition during allergic sensitization and allergen airway challenge results in augmented allergic inflammation. We hypothesized that this increase in allergic inflammation was dependent on increased generation of leukotrienes that results from COX inhibition, as leukotrienes are important proinflammatory mediators of allergic disease. To test this hypothesis, we allergically sensitized and challenged mice deficient in 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO). We found that 5-LO knockout mice that were treated with a COX inhibitor during allergic sensitization and challenge had significantly increased airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) (p < 0.01) and airway eosinophilia (p < 0.01) compared with 5-LO knockout mice that were treated with vehicle. The proinflammatory cytokines have also been hypothesized to be critical regulators of airway inflammation and AHR. We found that the increase in airway eosinophilia seen with COX inhibition is dependent on IL-5, whereas the increase in AHR is not dependent on this cytokine. In contrast, the COX inhibition-mediated increase in AHR is dependent on IL-13, but airway eosinophilia is not. These results elucidate the pathways by which COX inhibition exerts a critical effect of the pulmonary allergen-induced inflammatory response and confirm that COX products are important regulators of allergic inflammation. 相似文献

The presence of epiphytic foliose lichen amplifies the heterogeneity of habitat by creating shelters for insects living on tree bark. It thus should enhance species number and spatial niche segregation among these canopy insects. We studied this hypothesis in a field experiment using four aphid species that induce galls on Pistacia atlantica trees covered with Xanthoria parietina lichen. In autumn 2008, 3 months after aphid fundatrices were oviposited, we marked six branches on each of 29 trees. Two served as a control, whereas the other four were isolated with insect glue; two of them were scraped with sandpaper to remove epiphytic foliose lichens. We therefore obtained three treatments comprising control branches, isolated branches with lichen, and isolated branches without lichen. In summer 2009, we counted all the galls developing on five new annual shoots on each of 174 branches. We observed more cecidogenic aphid species on all the branches with lichens than without, but each species at different proportions. The different frequencies of utilization of the lichen did not lead to habitat partitioning between species. In conclusion, although habitat heterogeneity itself was associated with species richness and population abundance, it did not induce spatial niche segregation. Considering that many economically important insect species, pests and natural enemies, oviposit or spend some portion of their lives in bark cracks, it is possible that some can use lichens too for protection or/and oviposition sites. As a consequence, lichens may affect management of agrosystems and their impacts should be investigated more deeply in such contexts. 相似文献

Aim We explored general habitat‐related explanations (niche breadth and niche position) to the contrasting status of two amphibian species that have largely overlapping ranges and habitats – the rare and declining crested newt (Triturus cristatus), and the more common smooth newt (Triturus vulgaris). These closely related and ecologically similar species provide an excellent opportunity to study those methodologically challenging hypotheses, and this is the first such study on amphibians. Location Denmark. Methods We derived multivariate habitat models from 27 characteristics of 210 ponds and their surroundings, and their occupation by newts. In addition to the model performance, niche breadths were compared using the mean beta diversity of amphibian communities in the presence of each newt species. Results For each newt species, the habitat models comprised three variables and correctly classified 74% of observations. Diverse invertebrate fauna (prey base) and shorter distances to other ponds inhabited by conspecifics were positive for both species, while the surrounding habitat (notably dry grasslands with forests) was important for the crested newt and the sediment type of the pond for the smooth newt only. Beta diversity of the amphibian communities of occupied ponds did not differ between the two newt species. Hence, in an area of frequent coexistence, habitat requirements of the species differed in key variables, not in the extent of specialization. Main conclusions Our study supported the niche position rather than the niche‐breadth hypothesis of rarity. We suggest that the rarity and/or continuing decline of the crested newt is related to the degradation of (semi)natural terrestrial habitats around suitable water bodies in Europe. Consequently, special restoration of such habitats has a high potential for the recovery of this rare species, while general pond management appeared more beneficial for the common smooth newt. 相似文献

Aim The enemy release hypothesis is often invoked to explain why some alien plant species become invasive. Here, we investigated relationships between invasiveness, taxonomic isolation and leaf herbivory for tropical alien plant species introduced to a botanical garden in East Africa.
Location Amani Botanical Garden, East Usambara mountains, northeast Tanzania.
Methods We measured the proportion of leaves damaged, and the percentage leaf area damaged on individuals of 28 alien plant species. We extracted data on the presence/absence of native congeners and the number of native confamilial species from an inventory of the East Usambara flora. We also obtained data on planting effort for 26 species, from historical records. Linear and generalized linear models were used to analyse the relationships between invasiveness, herbivory and taxonomic isolation.
Results Mean proportion of leaves damaged per species was significantly explained by taxonomic isolation; proportion of leaves damaged increased with the number of native confamilial species and was greater, on average, for species with native congeners than those without native congeners. The mean percentage of leaf area damaged per species could not be explained by any variables considered in this study. There was no relationship between the degree of herbivory or taxonomic isolation and alien plant species invasiveness, but more-invasive species did have a significantly greater planting effort than less-invasive species.
Conclusions The role herbivores play in controlling alien plant invasions has been investigated relatively little in the tropics. The impact and significance of modern taxonomy on other fields in biology have been subjects of much debate. It has been proposed that increasing numbers of vertebrate species are largely owing to ‘taxonomic inflation’. According to this hypothesis, newly recognized species result from reinterpretations of species limits based on phylogenetic species concepts (PSCs) rather than from new discoveries. Here, I examine 747 proposals to change the taxonomic rank of birds in the period 1950–2007. The trend to recognize more species of birds started at least two decades before the introduction of PSCs. Most (84.6%) newly recognized species were supported by new taxonomic data. Proposals to recognize more species resulted from application of all six major taxonomic criteria. Many newly recognized species (63.4%) were not based exclusively on PSC-based criteria (diagnosability, monophyly and exclusive coalescence of gene trees). Therefore, this study finds no empirical support for the idea that the increase in species is primarily epistemological rather than data-driven. This study shows that previous claims about the causes and effects of taxonomic inflation lack empirical support. I argue that a more appropriate term for the increase in species is ‘taxonomic progress’. 相似文献

Question: How do distribution patterns change with increasing scale level, and can this shift be attributed to dispersal and/or niche limitation? Location: Dune slacks at the Belgian and North French coast. Method: Frequency distribution patterns of species were tested over different scale levels (ranging from 0.008 to 45 km2). Analyses were executed for the total species pool and for subsets of species with high and low dispersal rates and habitat generalist and specialist species. Results: Species distributions for the total species pool on scale levels larger than 1.5 km2 were unimodal, with an overrepresentation of rare species. With decreasing scale level, the proportion of common species increased, leading to weak bimodality. Distributions of subsets of slowly dispersing and habitat specialist species are on all scale levels characterised by a strongly unimodal pattern. The subset of species with high dispersal rates and habitat generalist species has a higher proportion of common species, leading to a significant core peak. Conclusions: On all scale levels both dispersal and niche limitation are hampering the wider distribution of rare species. However, since isolation and habitat heterogeneity are limited on the smaller scale levels, a larger proportion of well dispersing and habitat generalist species is able to occupy a high number of patches, resulting in a significant core peak for the total species pool. 相似文献

Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) has many insulin-like activities, including stimulation of glucose uptake in skeletal muscle. However, those with diabetes or chronic liver disease are insulin resistant but show a normal hypoglycemic response to IGF-1. We have previously shown that insulin sensitivity depends on a hepatic parasympathetic reflex release of a hormone from the liver. The hypothesis was tested that insulin action, but not IGF-1 action, is dependent on the hepatic parasympathetic reflex. Glucose disposal in response to three doses of IGF-1 (25, 100, 200 microg/kg) was determined in rats. IGF-1 at 200 microg/kg had similar effect on glucose disposal as did 50 mU/kg of insulin. Interruption of the hepatic parasympathetic reflex either by surgical ablation of the anterior nerve plexus or by atropine (1.0 mg/kg) resulted in insulin, but not IGF-1, resistance. Sixteen hours of fasting resulted in insulin, but not IGF-1, resistance. In conclusion, insulin, but not IGF-1, triggers the hepatic parasympathetic dependent release of a putative hepatic insulin sensitizing substance (HISS) that stimulates glucose uptake in skeletal muscle. 相似文献

Recent studies showed that specific isoprenoid modification may be critical for RhoB subcellular location and function. Therefore, we determined whether the function of the highly related RhoA protein is also critically dependent on specific isoprenoid modification: (a) in contrast to observations with RhoB or Ras proteins, where farnesylated and geranylgeranylated versions showed differences in subcellular location, both prenylated versions of RhoA showed the same plasma membrane and cytosolic location; (b) a farnesylated version of activated RhoA(63L) retained the same diverse functions as the normally geranylgeranylated RhoA(63L) protein, and both proteins show indistinguishable abilities to stimulate gene expression, cause growth transformation of NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblasts, to stimulate the motility of T47D human breast epithelial cells, and to block HIV-1 viral replication and gene expression; and (c) cells expressing farnesylated RhoA retained sensitivity to the growth inhibition caused by inhibition of geranylgeranyltransferase I, indicating that other proteins are critical targets for inhibitors of geranylgeranylation. 相似文献

Renewed interest in smallpox and the need for safer vaccines have highlighted our lack of understanding of the requirements for protective immunity. Since smallpox has been eradicated, surrogate animal models of closely related orthopoxviruses, such as ectromelia virus, have been used to establish critical roles for CD8 T cells in the control of primary infection. To study the requirements for protection against secondary infection, we have used a prime-challenge regime, in which avirulent ectromelia virus was used to prime mice that were then challenged with virulent ectromelia virus. In contrast to primary infection, T cells are not required for recovery from secondary infection, since gene knockout mice deficient in CD8 T-cell function and wild-type mice acutely depleted of CD4, CD8, or both subsets were fully protected. Protection correlated with effective virus control and generation of neutralizing antibody. Notably, primed mice that lacked B cells, major histocompatibility complex class II, or CD40 succumbed to secondary infection. Thus, antibody is essential, but CD4 or CD8 T cells are not required for recovery from secondary poxvirus infection. 相似文献

Mucus hyperproduction in asthma results from airway inflammation and contributes to clinical symptoms, airway obstruction, and mortality. In human asthmatics and in animal models, excess mucus production correlates with airway eosinophilia. We previously described a system in which TCR transgenic CD4 Th2 cells generated in vitro were transferred into recipient mice and activated in the respiratory tract with inhaled Ag. Th2 cells stimulated airway eosinophilia and a marked increase in mucus production, while mice that received Th1 cells exhibited airway inflammation without eosinophilia or mucus. Mucus could be induced by IL-4-/- Th2 cells at comparable levels to mucus induced by IL-4+/+ Th2 cells. In the current studies we dissect further the mechanisms of Th2-induced mucus production. When IL-4-/- Th2 cells are transferred into IL-4Ralpha-/- mice, mucus is not induced, and BAL eosinophilia is absent. These data suggest that in the absence of IL-4, IL-13 may be critical for Th2-induced mucus production and eosinophilia. To determine whether eosinophils are important in mucus production, IL-5-/- Th2 cells were transferred into IL-5-/- recipients. Eosinophilia was abolished, yet mucus staining in the epithelium persisted. These studies show definitively that IL-5, eosinophils, or mast cells are not essential, but signaling through IL-4Ralpha is critically important in Th2 cell stimulation of mucus production. 相似文献

Environmental factors and biodiversity affect ecosystem processes. As environmental change modifies also biodiversity it is unclear whether direct effects of environmental factors on ecosystem processes are more important than indirect effects mediated by changes in biodiversity. High-quality resources like carrion occur as heterogeneous pulses of energy and nutrients. Consequently, the distribution of scavenging insects is related to resource availability. Therefore, carrion decomposition represents a suitable process from which to unravel direct effects of environmental change from indirect biodiversity-related effects on ecosystem processes. During three field seasons in 2010 we exposed traps baited with small-mammal carrion at 21 sites along a temperature gradient to explore the insect carrion fauna and decomposition rate in the Bohemian Forest, Germany. The abundance component of beetle and fly assemblages decreased with decreasing temperature. Independently, the composition component of both taxa changed with temperature and season. The change in the composition component of beetles depicted a loss of larger species at higher temperatures. Decomposition rate did not change directly along the temperature gradient but was directly influenced by season. The composition component of beetles, and to a small extent of flies, but not their abundance component, directly affected carrion decomposition. Consequently, lower decomposition rates at lower temperatures can be explained by the absence of larger beetle species. Thus, we predict that future environmental change will modify carrion fauna composition and thereby indirectly decomposition rate. Moreover, reorganizations of the insect carrion composition will directly translate into modified decomposition rates, with potential consequences for nutrient availability and carbon storage. 相似文献
