Growth analysis of wild oats ( Avena fatua and A. ludoviciana ) grown in pots with different levels of nitrogen supply showed many similarities to spring barley, winter oats and winter wheat.
Small differences that could affect competition between wild oats and cereals occurred mainly in the seedlings. Wild oat seedlings were smaller than the corresponding cultivated cereals in total dry weight, total nitrogen content, leaf area and number of shoots. However, very young wild oat plants had higher net assimilation rates than the cultivated cereals and soon caught up and passed them. The difference in net assimilation rate did not persist, and in the later stages of growth differences in dry-matter production depended mainly on differences in leaf area. Another important difference between wild oats and cultivated cereals was that 98–100% of the wild oat seeds and none of the crop seeds were dormant 2 months after harvest.
Ear emergence in wild oats spread over a longer period, the range of ear heights was greater and the tallest ears were taller than in the corresponding cultivated cereals. Assimilation in the ear appeared to account for less of the total dry matter of the plants of wild and cultivated oats than of wheat. The wild oats produced more seeds per plant than the cultivated cereals, but the 1000-grain weight, and hence the total dry weight of seeds, was lower in the weeds than in the crop.
Addition of nitrogen to the soil affected the growth of the wild oats in the same ways as the cultivated cereals; they took up the same amount of nitrogen per plant as winter oats and winter wheat but more than spring barley.
It is concluded that wild oats are most susceptible in the seedling stage to competition from the crop and that nitrogenous fertilizer applied to an infested field is unlikely to alter the balance between the yields of crop and of wild oats.  相似文献

In 621 samples of wild oats, collected in England and Wales by N.A.A.S. and N.I.A.B. Officers, only two species ( Avena fatua and A. ludoviciana ) were found but both were very variable. A. fatua occurred in all wheat- and barley-growing areas, in both winter and spring corn and on all soil types. A. ludoviciana occurred (with two exceptions) only within approximately 80 miles radius of Oxford, mainly on heavy soila and chiefly in winter corn.
The amount of wild oats present appeared to depend on the frequency in the rotation of corn or other crops in which wild oats would shed seed. Deep ploughing often increased the infestation. The data did not show whether a field could be freed of wild oats by grassing down for a number of years, nor what is the maximum period of survival of buried wild oat seeds.  相似文献

A procedure adopted for testing many varieties of oats and segregating progenies for reaction to attack by stem eelworm ( Ditylenchus dipsaci Kühn) is described, and its merits and limitations discussed in relation to the breeding of resistant varieties.
A study of some 250 forms of oats revealed new sources of resistance in cultivated and wild species. New sources of resistance in the cultivated species Avena sativa were found only in winter types, and in the other hexaploid species in forms belonging to A. byzantina (C) Koch, and the winter wild oat A. ludoviciana Dur.
Segregate progenies in advanced generations could be selected in the field by their reaction in a single drill in the first year followed by a head-row progeny test in the next season. Reaction was sufficiently well defined to identify the truebreeding resistant and susceptible lines.
The inheritance of reaction to stem eelworm in crosses involving Grey Winter and susceptible types depended on a single factor pair with resistance dominant.  相似文献

The distinguishing characters of Avena fatua and A. ludoviciana are described.
Pot experiments and field observations showed that most seeds of A. fatua germinated in spring and a few in autumn; hardly any germinated in summer or winter. Seeds of A. ludoviciana germinated in winter only. The greatest depth of sowing from which seedlings of either species reached the surface was 9 in., but seedlings from this depth were weak and yellow when they first appeared. A. ludoviciana gave more and sturdier seedlings than A. fatua from 6 and 9 in. There was no evidence of induced dormancy in seeds of A. fatua buried at depths down to 20 in. Germination of this species was hastened by monthly cultivation of the soil. The maximum survival of A. fatua was 3 years in pots and slightly longer in the field; seeds of A. ludoviciana in pots survived only 2 years. The two or three seeds of each spikelet of A. ludoviciana germinated in turn, starting with the largest, but the interval between germination of successive seeds varied.
Seedlings from freshly sown seeds of both species were more vigorous than seedlings from seeds which had been buried for a year or more. Germination and subsequent growth of both species took place in soil of pH 4.5 to 7.0 approx.  相似文献

Summary We tested the hypothesis that mycorrhizal infection benefits wild plants to a lesser extent than cultivated plants. This hypothesis stems from two observations: (1) mycorrhizal infection improves plant growth primarily by increasing nutrient uptake, and (2) wild plants often possess special adaptations to soil infertility which are less pronounced in modern cultivated plants. In the first experiment, wild (Avena fatua L.) and cultivated (A. sativa L.) oats were grown hydroponically at four different phosphorus levels. Wild oat was less responsive (in shoot dry weight) to increasing phosphorus availability than cultivated oat. In addition, the root: shoot ratio was much more plastic in wild oat (varying from 0.90 in the low phosphorus solution to 0.25 in the high phosphorus solution) than in cultivated oat (varying from 0.44 to 0.17). In the second experiment, mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal wild and cultivated oats were grown in a phosphorus-deficient soil. Mycorrhizal infection generally improved the vegetative growth of both wild and cultivated oats. However, infection significantly increased plant lifespan, number of panicles per plant, shoot phosphorus concentration, shoot phosphorus content, duration of flowering, and the mean weight of individual seeds in cultivated oat, while it had a significantly reduced effect, no effect, or a negative effect on these characters for wild oat. Poor positive responsiveness of wild oat in these characters was thus associated with what might be considered to be inherent adaptations to nutrient deficiency: high root: shoot ratio and inherently low growth rate. Infection also increased seed phosphorus content and reproductive allocation.  相似文献

Using C-banding method and in situ hybridization with the 45S and 5S rRNA gene probes, six hexaploid species of the genus Avena L. with the ACD genome constitution were studied to reveal evolutionary karyotypic changes. Similarity in the C-banding patterns of chromosomal and in the patterns of distribution of the rRNA gene families suggests a common origin of all hexaploid species. Avena fatua is characterized by the broadest intraspecific variation of the karyotype; this species displays chromosomal variants typical of other hexaploid species of Avena. For instance, a translocation with the involvement of chromosome 5C marking A. occidentalis was discovered in many A. fatua accessions, whereas in other representatives of this species this chromosome is highly similar to the chromosome of A. sterilis. Only A. fatua and A. sativa show slight changes in the morphology and in the C-banding pattern of chromosome 2C. These results can be explained either by a hybrid origin of A. fatua or by the fact that this species is an intermediate evolutionary form of hexaploid oats. The 7C-17 translocation was identified in all studied accessions of wild and weedy species (A. sterilis, A. fatua, A. ludoviciana, and A. occidentalis) and in most A. sativa cultivars, but it was absent in A. byzantina and in two accessions of A. sativa. The origin and evolution of the Avena hexaploid species are discussed in context of the results.  相似文献

Summary In pot experiments with a phosphorus-deficient soil and four barley varieties, Kenia, Maja, Bonus, and Pallas, receiving increasing amounts of phosphorus, it was found that the order of susceptibility to phosphorus deficiency of the varieties was the same for grain as for grain + straw, when the ranking was based on the percentage decrease in dry matter yield as a result of phosphorus deficiency based on the maximum obtained dry matter yield. Estimations of the maximum phosphorus utilization quotients of dry matter yield of grain + straw graduated the susceptibility to phosphorus deficiency of the varieties in the same order.  相似文献

Crown rust of oats (Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae) was investigated as a biocontrol agent for wild oats (Avena fatua) on San Clemente Island, California. Successful restoration of the native habitats of this island will involve the reduction of wild oats and revegetation with native grasses such as stipa (Nassella pulchra). Determination of the outcome of interference between wild oats and stipa is important in the prediction of the success of the biocontrol agent. An addition series design was used to investigate these interactions, with densities of each species ranging from 0 to 2000 seeds per m2. Eight replicates were established, four of which were randomly chosen and infected with the pathogen. After 75 days, plant height, dry weight, and seed production were measured. The data were fit to a hyperbola surface model by use of a nonlinear regression procedure. Results indicate that wild oat is the superior competitor at the seedling stage; however, early rust infection greatly reduces fitness of wild oats, causing an increased fitness for stipa. Simulations with a plant community model constructed from the results of the greenhouse experiment and information in the literature indicated that an equilibrium may be established between wild oat and stipa if high initial seeding rates of stipa are used in revegetation.  相似文献

Levels of ATP in dry caryopses of wild oats (Avena fatua L.)were much lower than in imbibed seeds of the seven geneticallypure lines surveyed. The ATP content of the lines with highgenetic dormancy was consistently lower than the ATP contentof genetically non-dormant lines, but no significant correlationwith depth of dormancy was found apart from this. Massive increasesin ATP content occurred within 30 min of water uptake by caryopsesof both dormant and non-dormant lines. The synthetic pathwaystudied utilized inorganic phosphate with great avidity to formATP. The ability to form ATP upon imbibition was present inboth embryo and de-embryonated caryopsis. The ATP levels attainedin imbibing caryopses appeared sufficient to support considerablesynthetic activity, and this reduced the possibility that adeficiency in ATP was responsible for the maintenance of dormancyin such imbibed seeds. The low levels of inorganic phosphatein the embryos of genetically dormant lines of wild oat couldrepresent a limiting factor, if the active formation of ATPupon water imbibition resulted in a scarcity of phosphate forother reactions essential to germination. The availability of various manganese oxides to plants   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Summary A number of oxides of manganese were prepared and their crystalline structures were indentified by X-rays. They were added to four soils on which plants suffered from manganese deficiency. Oxides of the structures manganite, manganous manganite, and pyrolusite cured manganese deficiency of oats and peas. All the successful oxides consisted of very small particles, as shown by electron micrographs. The amount of the oxides dissolved by aqueous quinol during an hour at room temperature was correlated with their ability to supply plants with manganese.  相似文献

Nine enzymes were compared in dry and steeped mature dormant and non-dormant seeds of wild oats. In dry seeds only glutamate-pyruvate transaminase and phosphoglycerate kinase were greater in non-dormant seeds. In steeped non-dormant seeds glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity doubled while the enzyme declined sharply in dormant seeds. Increases in isocitrate dehydrogenase, glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase and acid phosphatase in non-dormant seeds, during steeping, are consistent with the hypothesis that the pentose phosphate and glycolysis-tricarboxylic acid pathways are involved in the control of dormancy of wild oat seed.  相似文献

The furanocoumarin content of ripe seeds of seven cultivars of Pastinaca sativa was compared to that of ripe seeds from a naturalized population in central Illinois. Five furanocoumarins were identified and quantified in the intact seeds. While seeds of wild and cultivated plants contain furanocoumarin components in identical proportions, seeds from wild plants contain almost three times the quantity of furanocoumarins on a dry weight basis as do seeds of cultivars.  相似文献

Summary Burley tobacco varieties (Nicotiana tabacum L.) which differed in degrees of susceptibility to calcium deficiency were analyzed for calcium and oxalic acid content. Calcium accumulated by the total plant top was not related to susceptibility to calcium deficiency. Upper leaves and buds of plants of susceptible varieties contained less calcium per unit weight than did upper leaves and buds of non-susceptible varieties. The upper half of stalks of susceptible varieties contained more oxalic acid per unit weight than did stalks of non-susceptible varieties. The calcium content minus the oxalic acid content in buds and young leaves of the plants of the susceptible varieties was considerably less than that of buds and young leaves of the plants of the non-susceptible varieties. High levels of oxalic acid in the upper stalks and young leaves of varieties susceptible to calcium deficiency apparently induce calcium deficiency by interfering with the translocation and utilization of absorbed calcium.Contribution of the Department of Agronomy, Kentucky Agr. The concentrations of accumulated trace metals in selected seeds and vegetables collected in the oil producing Rivers State of Nigeria were investigated. The values were compared with those of seeds and vegetables cultivated in Owerri, a less industrialized area in Nigeria. The lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) contents of the seeds obtained from Rivers State ranged between 0.10 and 0.23 μg/g dry weight, while those of the seeds cultivated in Owerri fell below the detection limit of 0.01 μg/g dry weight. The highest manganese (Mn) level (902 μg/g dry weight) was found in Irvingia garbonesis seeds cultivated in Rivers State. Similarly, the highest nickel (Ni) value (199 μg/g dry weight) was also obtained in I. garbonesis, however, in the seeds sampled in Owerri. The highest copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) levels (16.8, 5.27, and 26.2 μg/g dry weight, resp.) were detected in seeds collected in Rivers State. With the exception of Talinum triangulae, Ocinum gratissimum, and Piper guineese, with Pb levels of 0.09, 0.10, and 0.11 μg/g dry weight, respectively, the Pb and Cd levels in the vegetables grown in Owerri fell below the detection limit of 0.01 μg/g dry weight. The trace metal with the highest levels in all the vegetables studied was Mn, followed by Fe. The highest concentrations of Ni and Cu occurred in vegetables collected from Rivers State, while the highest level of Zn was observed in Piper guineese collected in Owerri, with a value of 21.4 μg/g dry weight. Although the trace metal concentrations of the seeds and vegetables collected in Rivers State tended to be higher than those of the seeds and vegetables grown in Owerri, the average levels of trace metals obtained in this study fell far below the WHO specifications for metals in foods.  相似文献

A number of the phosphorus transformations accompanying imbibitionand initial germination in caryopses of wild oats (A vena fatuaL.) differ in nature and kind from those accompanying seedlingdevelopment. Even in non-dormant lines of wild oat germinationis extended and seedling development uneven. The significanceof early phosphorus transformations can be obscured. Proceduresto synchronize germination stages were developed by (i) usingseeds which had been exposed to room temperature for extendedperiods of dry storage, (ii) inducing germination of imbibedseeds by dehulling, piercing and/or gibberellin A3 treatments,or (iii) constructing artificial seed groupings of known germinationpercentage by appropriate selection of seeds from an unevenlygerminating seed source. All three procedures were effectivein identifying those processes associated with initial germination. The best synchronization was obtained with method (i). Germination,in contrast to imbibition, was signalled by a significant dropin inorganic phosphate levels, followed by a later rise as seedreserves of phytate were mobilized for seedling development.Differences in the rates of mobilization of acid-soluble phosphoruscompounds were apparent between cultivated oats and geneticallynon-dormant wild oats. The maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais Motsch. is an important pest of maize that attacks the grain both in the field and during storage. The damage caused by the maize weevil S. zeamais on maize landraces, Amarelo Antigo, Asteca, Caiano, Carioca, and Ferrinho, was evaluated by no-choice tests under laboratory conditions. The commercial varieties Sol da Manh?, BR 106, BR 451, and the synthetics PC 0203 and PC 9903 were evaluated for comparisons with the maize landraces. The parameters evaluated were susceptibility index, number of weevil progeny, development time, weevil progeny dry weight, and grain dry weight loss. The landraces were more susceptible to the maize weevil as compared to the commercial varieties. Based on the cluster analysis, two groups of susceptibility to the maize weevil were observed: one of more susceptible populations formed by local landraces and BR 451, and another less susceptible, with commercial varieties, synthetics, and the landrace Amarelo.  相似文献

Lines exhibiting heritable resistance and susceptibility to beet cyst nematode were selected from a heterogeneous cultivated variety of beet but no major gene resistance was detected although many hundreds of lines of wild and cultivated varieties were tested. Recurrent selection improved the resistance of one line, selected originally for yield and non-bolting qualities, when progenies in each generation were compared with susceptible controls and with the original ancestral lines. Resistance was inherited by progenies from selections crossed with susceptible plants, but evidence of some reduction in resistance was detectable where fewer eelworms were available to invade from the soil. There was no evidence of heritable cytoplasmic influence on the resistance. Resistance is probably controlled by a polygene system in sugar beet, although immunity in Beta procumbens and B. webbiana and near-immunity in B. patellaris suggest that in other species of Beta major gene resistance may occur.  相似文献

Plant domestication is assumed to result in reduced levels of defensive compounds in crops, because this makes the plants more suitable for consumption by humans and livestock. We argue that this should mainly be reflected in the concentrations of defense compounds in the plant parts that are used for consumption and not necessarily for other parts of crop plants. We tested this hypothesis for domesticated lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus), by comparing its chemical defenses against a leaf herbivore, the beet armyworm (Spodoptera exigua), and a seed predator, the beetle Zabrotes subfasciatus. For seeds and leaves we determined the concentrations of cyanogenic glycosides (CNGs) in cultivated varieties and wild populations and evaluated the preference and performance of the herbivores when exposed to leaves and seeds from wild and cultivated plants. Concentrations of CNGs were significantly different between wild and cultivated plants. In the leaves the concentration of CNGs in the cultivated varieties were more than double that of the wild leaves. In contrast, seeds from cultivated plants had up to 20 times lower CNG concentration compared to seeds from the wild populations. Insect preference and performance do not parallel the chemical data. Larvae of S. exigua preferred wild leaves but had higher survival on cultivated leaves. The beetles, however, strongly preferred seeds from cultivated plants and females developed more quickly on these seeds. We conclude that domestication of P. lunatus has altered the concentration of CNGs in both the seeds and the leaves in opposite directions. This results in differential effects on the herbivores that attack these two plant structures. The contrasting effect of domestication on different plant tissues can be explained by the fact that bean plants have been specifically selected for human consumption of the seeds. Tissue-specific effects of plant domestication on plant defenses can be expected for other crops as well.  相似文献

Germination of freshly harvested seeds of a non-dormant (ND) line (Stonehouse 319) of wild oats ( Avena fatua L.) was inhibited by incubation of the seeds at relatively high temperatures of 25 and 30°C. The germination inhibition in these seeds appeared to be a case of thermo-inhibition which was the direct effect of hightemperature treatment (HIT), since it did not persist after transferring the seeds to an optimum germination temperature of 20°C. Even a prolonged HTT of 30°C for over 5 weeks did not prevent germination of about 80% of the seeds transferred to 20°C. However, in a significant proportion of the seeds, thermo-dormancy was induced by 10 days of HTT at 30°C if the seeds were then incubated at sub-optimal temperatures of 5 to 15°C. This thermo-dormancy would appear to be 'restrictive' in form, since its expression was restricted to very specific conditions. Relatively low inclubation temperaturs of 5 and 10°C markedly slowed germination whether HTT was applied or not. The results suggest that thermo-inhibition and thermo-dormancy, induced during seasonal temperature fluctuations, may provide a survival mechanism for seeds of such ND lines as Stonehouse 319.  相似文献
