The growth pattern of myotomal red, pink and white muscle and its relation to somatic growth in Caranx malabaricus are described. The growth pattern of red muscle was by an increase in fibre number in early size classes (< 22 cm f.l.) and thereafter mainly by increase in fibre diameter and partly by increase in fibre number. The growth of pink muscle was mainly by an increase in fibre diameter, but in smaller fish an increase in fibre number was also evident. White muscle growth was mainly by an increase in fibre diameter and partly by increase in fibre numbers in fish < 22 cm f.l., but only by an increase in fibre diameter from 22 cm f.l. onwards. Caranx malabaricus is a slow-to-moderate growing species and its fibre growth pattern matches with such somatic growth.  相似文献

The growth dynamics of red, pink and white fibres of the caudal and pectoral fin muscles are described in Carans malabaricus (Cuv. & Val.) in relation to their somatic growth. In all three fibre types growth occurred by an increase in fibre number and diameter in small size classes of fish and by an increase in diameter only in larger fish. The growth dynamics of the three fibre types were similar to those of the myotomal muscle fibres and paralleled the somatic growth pattern of this fish.  相似文献

The seasonal abundance, population structure, reproduction, feeding, respiratory adaptations and tolerance were studied in the catfish Clarias lazera (Cuv. & Val.) in the reservoir of Jebel Aulia on the White Nile, and in the Green-Belt canals near Khartoum. Continuous monitoring of the ripe, spent and spawning females and immature fish in the population revealed that C. lazera breed synchronously in the autumn in the reservoir and rather sporadically in the canals. Medium-sized females were more fecund than old and young females. Administration of pituitary extract enhanced maturation, induced spawning in mature fish, stimulated body growth, especially in maturing specimens, and produced, as a side-effect, a diuretic response. Mature fish depended on pulmonary respiration for about 45% of the total oxygen requirement. C. lazera fed preferentially on its fry and on decayed proteinaceous food. The suitability of this species for economic cultivation is discussed.  相似文献

The interrenal cells in Rasbora daniconius, Barbus stigma and Channa gachua are mainly found around the postcardinal vein and its major branches in the haemopoietic head-kidney. The chromaffin cells which are identified by the positive chromaffin reaction are found in the walls of the postcardinal vein or dispersed among the interrenal cells. delta5-3beta-HSDH and G-6-PDH activity was observed in the interrenal cells of all three teleosts. The present work indicates that the interrenal cells are capable of steroid biosynthesis and the chromaffin cells contain biologically active catecholamines.  相似文献

The formation of the micropyle in the oocytes of a gobiid fish O. acutipennis is described. In O. acutipennis the micropyle is formed at the summit of a cone termed here as the “micropylar cone”. A single follicular cell takes part in the formation of the micropyle while the two cells on either side seems to play a supporting role in the process.  相似文献

Summary The cement gland apparatus of newly hatched Pterophyllum scalare Cuv. & Val. was examined by histology, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The whole organ is composed of three pairs of endoepithelial, ductless glands, which cause prominent elevations on the larval head and are found in a specific arrangement. Each single gland is represented by an aggregation of elongated, tubular secretory cells surrounding a pyriform acinus. It overlies a basal lamina and is covered by the outer layer of the bilaminar embryonic epidermis. Two different types of secretory cells can be distinguished. One type is restricted to the bottom of the cavity. It is characterized by multiform cytoplasmic protrusions, which project into the gland's cavity. The secretory granules contain a network of light filamentous material. The second type constitutes the side wall of the acinus. It does not develop any protrusions. The contents of the secretory granules is of very high and homogeneous electron density. The mechanism of extrusion is discussed for both cell types. All secretory cells show a strong PAS-reaction. In SEM a circular microridge pattern with attached mucus globules can be recognized on the larval epithelial surface.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. H. Leonhardt on the occasion of his 60th birthday  相似文献

Age and growth of an Iberian cyprinodont, Aphanius iberus (Cuv. & Val.), in its most northerly population, La Rubina lagoon (Alt Empordà wetlands, NE Spain), was studied. The age groups for this Mediterranean population (O +, 1 + and 2 +) agree with those reported for the Atlantic population (R. Guadalquivir marshes), in the southern limit of the species distribution in the Iberian peninsula. Differences in age structure between these populations and the one previously studied in La Tancada lagoon (R. Ebro delta marshes) can be attributed to age estimation bias. Male A. iberus data appear to fit similarly to a Gompertz growth function and to a von Bertalanffy growth function, but L x, was clearly underestimated. A Gompertz growth function was not a good fit for females, perhaps because female growth is clearly faster and less attenuated than male growth. The life history and growth pattern ofthis species is similar to that in other cyprinodontiform fishes, typified by a short longevity. The growth model of this species does not seem to fit types I and II of Sebens's classification, which are characteristic of fish.  相似文献

Large and high nitrogen (N) concentration seedlings frequently have higher survival and growth in Mediterranean forest plantations than seedlings with the opposite traits, which has been linked to the production of deeper and larger root systems in the former type of seedlings. This study assessed the influence of seedling size and N concentration on root growth dynamics and its relation to shoot elongation in Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) seedlings. We cultivated seedlings that differed in size and tissue N concentration that were subsequently transplanted into transparent methacrylate tubes in the field. The number of roots, root depth, and the root and shoot elongation rate (length increase per unit time) were periodically measured for 10 weeks. At the end of the study, we also measured the twig water potential (ψ) and the mass of plant organs. New root mass at the end of the study increased with seedling size, which was linked to the production of a greater number of new roots of lower specific length rather than to higher elongation rate of individual roots. Neither plant size nor N concentration affected root depth. New root mass per leaf mass unit, shoot elongation rate, and pre-dawn ψ were reduced with reduction in seedling size, while mid-day ψ and the root relative growth rate were not affected by seedling size. N concentration had an additive effect on plant size on root growth but its overall effect was less important than seedling size. Shoot and roots had an antagonistic elongation pattern through time in small seedlings, indicating that the growth of both organs depressed each other and that they competed for the same resources. Antagonism between shoot and root elongation decreased with plant size, disappearing in large and medium seedlings, and it was independent of seedling N concentration. We conclude that root and shoot growth but not rooting depth increased with plant size and tissue N concentration in Aleppo pine seedlings. Since production of new roots is critical for the establishment of planted seedlings, higher absolute root growth in large seedlings may increase their transplanting performance relative to small seedlings. The lack of antagonism between root and shoot growth in large seedlings suggests that these plants can provide resources to sustain simultaneous growth of both organs.  相似文献

The changes in distribution of mucopolysaccharides, glycogen and protein bound sulphydryl groups of cysteine in the various cellular components of the epidermis of Barbus sophor along with its structural alterations as a result of hyperosmotic stress, have been described using histochemical techniques. The hyperosmotic saline induces a cyclic secretion of acid mucopolysaccharides by the mucous cells. Simultaneously the polygonal cells also show a marked disturbance in the processes of mucogenesis and keratinization, indicating an inverse relationship between the degree of keratinization and the amount of mucus secreted by epidermis. The role of glycogen in the polygonal cells has been discussed in relation to disturbed mucogenesis. The appearance of intercellular spaces in basal layer and middle layer has been correlated with the passage for movement of increased amounts of nutrients through the skin.  相似文献

1. Seasonal variations in the histology of the pituitary gland of Cirrhinus mrigala (Ham.), an Indian freshwater major carp, in relation to gonadal activity has been studied during a one year period commencing, January, 1971. 2. The proximal pars distalis undergoes a great deal of seasonal variation in size, weight and nature of pituicytes. 3. The percentage composition of acidophils and cyanophils in the proximal pars distalis show a reciprocal relationship during the year. The acidophils predominate during the restitution phase of the gonads while the cyanophils preponderate among the different cell types during the breeding season. 4. The chromophobes do not show any significant fluctuation in numerical abundance in relation to gonadal activity. 5. Cyanophils of the proximal pars distalis undergo changes with change in gonadal activity Concentration of glycoproteinaceous material is extremely low during the restitution phase but high during the maturation phase. The cyanophils also undergo hypertrophy and hyperplasia during the spawning period. The latter discharge their contents and become vacuolated during the post spawning period. 6. The number and size of the globules in the cyanophils are related to gonadal activity. 7. Acidophils present in the rostral pars distalis and pars intermedia do not appear to be related to gonadal activity in C. mrigala. 8. The average weight of the gland is directly related to the state of maturation of the gonads, an observation being recorded here for the first time.  相似文献

Newly hatched precocial chicks of arctic shorebirds are able to walk and regulate their body temperatures to a limited extent. Yet, they must also grow rapidly to achieve independence before the end of the short arctic growing season. A rapid growth rate may conflict with development of mature function, and because of the allometric scaling of thermal relationships, this trade-off might be resolved differently in large and small species. We assessed growth (mass) and functional maturity (catabolic enzyme activity) in leg and pectoral muscles of chicks aged 1-16 d and adults of two scolopacid shorebirds, the smaller dunlin (Calidris alpina: neonate mass 8 g, adult mass 50 g) and larger whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus; neonate mass 34 g, adult mass 380 g). Enzyme activity indicates maximum catabolic capacity, which is one aspect of the development of functional maturity of muscle. The growth rate-maturity hypothesis predicts that the development of catabolic capacity should be delayed in faster-growing muscle masses. Leg muscles of both species were a larger proportion of adult size at hatching and grew faster than pectoral muscles. Pectoral muscles grew more rapidly in the dunlin than in the whimbrel, whereas leg muscles grew more rapidly in the whimbrel. In both species and in both leg and pectoral muscles, enzyme activities generally increased with age, suggesting increasing functional maturity. Levels of citrate synthase activity were similar to those reported for other species, but l-3-hydroxyacyl-CoA-dehydrogenase and pyruvate kinase (PK) activities were comparatively high. Catabolic capacities of leg muscles were initially high compared to those of pectoral muscles, but with the exception of glycolytic (PK) capacities, these subsequently increased only modestly or even decreased as chicks grew. The earlier functional maturity of the more rapidly growing leg muscles, as well as the generally higher functional maturity in muscles of the more rapidly growing dunlin chicks, contradicts the growth rate-maturity function trade-off and suggests that birds have considerable latitude to modify this relationship. Whimbrel chicks, apparently, can rely on allometric scaling of power requirements for locomotion and the thermal inertia of their larger mass to reduce demands on their muscles, whereas dunlin chicks require muscles with higher metabolic capacity from an earlier age. Thus, larger and smaller species may adopt different strategies of growth and tissue maturation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Changes in size inequality in tree populations are often attributed to changes in the mode of competition over time. The mode of competition may also fluctuate annually in response to variation in growing conditions. Factors causing growth rate to vary can also influence competition processes, and thus influence how size hierarchies develop. METHODS: Detailed data obtained by tree-ring reconstruction were used to study annual changes in size and size increment inequality in several even-aged, fire-origin jack pine (Pinus banksiana) stands in the boreal shield and boreal plains ecozones in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada, by using the Gini and Lorenz asymmetry coefficients. KEY RESULTS: The inequality of size was related to variables reflecting long-term stand dynamics (e.g. stand density, mean tree size and average competition, as quantified using a distance-weighted absolute size index). The inequality of size increment was greater and more variable than the inequality of size. Inequality of size increment was significantly related to annual growth rate at the stand level, and was higher when growth rate was low. Inequality of size increment was usually due primarily to large numbers of trees with low growth rates, except during years with low growth rate when it was often due to small numbers of trees with high growth rates. The amount of competition to which individual trees were subject was not strongly related to the inequality of size increment. CONCLUSIONS: Differences in growth rate among trees during years of poor growth may form the basis for development of size hierarchies on which asymmetric competition can act. A complete understanding of the dynamics of these forests requires further evaluation of the way in which factors that influence variation in annual growth rate also affect the mode of competition and the development of size hierarchies.  相似文献

The morphology of neuromuscular junction in the amphibian submandibular muscle has been examined both light and electron microscopically. Despite the differentiation of muscle fibres into types, both the structure and ultrastructure of the motor end plates was found fairly uniform in the examined species. The strongly positive correlation between the motor end plate surface area and muscle fibre diameter was found in Triturus and Rana. Some aspects of the motor end plate morphology are discussed in connection with the results of the author's physiological and morphological observations obtained formerly.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Age, growth and reproduction in an Atlantic population of the small fish, Aphanius iberus (Cuv. & Val., 1846), from the estuary of the Guadalquivir river were studied.
2. The growth period was from April to September and the annulus on the scales was formed in April.
3. The life-span was short with a winter age-structure of 95.9% 0+ fish, 3.9% 1+ and 0.2% 2+.
4. The fecundity of this stock, before the beginning of reproduction, is represented by the formula: Fec=0.907 TL (cm)4.099. During the reproductive period 1+ females contained more, smaller eggs g−1 of gonad than 0+ fish.
5. Males matured before females, but females were larger than males. The overall sex ratio did not differ from 1:1 but males dominated significantly during most of the spawning period.
6. Aphanius iberus spawned intermittently during the reproductive period. From April to July, 1+ group specimens (7–12 months old) reproduced. Their offspring (0+ group; 3–4 months old) reproduced from July to September. Very few of the 1+ group specimens survived to spawn the following year.
7. Mean gonadosomatic indices were much higher in the 1+ group than in the 0+ group and in females compared to males.
8. The loss of condition and the disappearance of the 1 + group during spawning, may indicate the cost of a prolonged high level of reproductive effort.
9. In this productive environment, the life history of Aphanius iberus is similar to that of Gambusia affinis (Baird & Girard, 1853) and Fundulus heteroclitus (Linnaeus) found in the same area.  相似文献
