Ants are the only group of invertebrates currently identified as significant dispersers of seeds, but we report here the dispersal of Eucalyptus torelliana seeds by bees. Fruits of E. torelliana produce resin which is collected by workers of the stingless bee Trigona carbonaria. Seeds adhere to resin in the workers' corbiculate and are transported to the nest. Workers transported seeds distances of more than 300 m from the parent tree and seeds at the nest were viable and capable of germination. Seeds were removed from the nests by workers and discarded away from the nest, and E. torelliana trees became established in the vicinity of colonies of T. carbonaria. Mellitochory may be a novel method of seed dispersal where bees are dispersers, and associated with fruits that produce resin as an attractant for bees.  相似文献

Cultural use of spring-fed wetlands in Death Valley National Park, California has reduced populations of endemic macroinvertebrates. Studies were conducted during the spring and late autumn of 1994 to assess demography and habitat use by the Badwater snail (Assiminea infima), which is endemic to low-elevation, spring-fed habitats in Death Valley where its abundance is believed to be adversely affected by municipal diversions and habitat trampling by Park visitors. Effects on demography and habitat were examined at sites highly, lightly, and unaffected by these activities. Field experiments examined the response of its habitat and abundance to trampling.Snail density ranged from 0 to 19000 m–2 along the banks of seven springs sampled at Badwater and Cottonball Marsh. Springbrooks with high, steep, and overhanging banks were preferred A. infima habitat. Mean distance of snails from water ranged from 1 mm at Badwater to 39 mm at Cottonball Marsh, and distance from water was greater in autumn than spring. Frequency distributions of shell height showed each population was comprised of several cohorts during spring and autumn, suggesting that reproduction occurs several times a year.Field experiments demonstrated that trampling reduces bank heights, angles and overhangs, and A. infima population density. Actions are required to manage public use at Badwater to arrest declines in abundance and distribution of A. infima, and to allow for recovery. Historical diversion of springs for irrigation and municipal uses have reduced and dried many aquatic and riparian habitats in the Funeral Mountains, causing current distribution in these springs to be approximately 15% of historical levels.  相似文献

Benthic macroinvertebrate communities were studied and environmental variables were measured in six rheocrene springs in Cantabria, northern Spain. Principal component analysis revealed two different spring types according to their physical and chemical characteristics. Springs from group A (GA) had higher temperature and conductivity, while springs in group B (GB) had higher values of pH, altitude, mean water velocity, percentage of boulders and coarse particulate organic matter. Total number of invertebrate taxa and individuals were not different between GA and GB springs. However, Shannon diversity index was significantly higher for GB springs. Analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis indicated that invertebrate assemblages from GA and GB springs were different. The snails Theodoxus fluviatilis and Bythinella sp., and the amphipod Echinogammarus spp. had higher densities in GA springs, whereas ephemeropterans, plecopterans, trichopterans and chironomids were more important in GB springs. Higher water velocities in GB springs interacting with predation by Echinogammarus tarraconensis may be responsible for the observed patterns on invertebrate community structure and composition. The taxonomic resolution limited our ability to detect crenobiontic taxa. Sampling aquatic, semi-aquatic and semi-terrestrial habitats are needed to account for the biodiversity patterns of spring habitats.  相似文献

Intraspecific trait variation, including animal personalities and behavioural syndromes, affects how individual animals and populations interact with their environment. Within-species behavioural variation is widespread across animal taxa, which has substantial and unexplored implications for the ecological and evolutionary processes of animals. Accordingly, we sought to investigate individual behavioural characteristics in several populations of a desert-dwelling fish, the Australian desert goby (Chlamydogobius eremius). We reared first generation offspring in a common garden to compare non-ontogenic divergence in behavioural phenotypes between genetically interconnected populations from contrasting habitats (isolated groundwater springs versus hydrologically variable river waterholes). Despite the genetic connectedness of populations, fish had divergent bold-exploratory traits associated with their source habitat. This demonstrates divergence in risk-taking traits as a rapid phenotypic response to ecological pressures in arid aquatic habitats: neophilia may be suppressed by increased predation pressure and elevated by high intraspecific competition. Correlations between personality traits also differed between spring and river fish. River populations showed correlations between dispersal and novel environment behaviours, revealing an adaptive behavioural syndrome (related to dispersal and exploration) that was not found in spring populations. This illustrates the adaptive significance of heritable behavioural variation within and between populations, and their importance to animals persisting across contrasting habitats.  相似文献

1. The unique aquatic fauna of the island‐like groundwater springs of arid inland Australia raises important questions as to how aquatic species persist in very isolated and fragmented habitats and the role that dispersal may play in mitigating/mediating the influence of landscape structure and determining population structure. By determining the relationship between genetics and geography (i.e. phylogeography), the historical processes responsible for population structure can be determined. 2. We undertook comparative phylogeographic studies of invertebrates from springs south of Lake Eyre. Clusters of springs lying within and between surface drainage catchments (which provide a potential connection between springs) were sampled, and the phylogeographic structure of four coexisting species, an ostracod Ngarwa dirga, a snail Fonscochlea accepta, an isopod Phreatomerus latipes and an amphipod Wangiannachiltonia guzikae, was examined. 3. Clear differences in the geographic patterns of genetic structure were found amongst the four species. No discernable genetic structure was found in ostracod and snail populations, even amongst springs lying 20 km apart in separate surface catchments; isopod populations were highly genetically structured amongst springs located in separate catchments, but not within catchments, whilst amphipod populations were highly genetically structured amongst springs both within and between catchments. 4. The results suggest that differences in dispersal ability of each species, and not the overall fragmented nature of the springs, may have led to large differences in phylogeographic history. Interestingly, the relative dispersal ability of these species may be related to their vulnerability to and recovery from large‐scale flood events. Therefore, despite the highly isolated and fragmented nature of the springs, the landscape has not strongly influenced the population structure of the aquatic invertebrate community as a whole nor has it led to the evolution of common life histories.  相似文献

Three multivoltine species of satyrine butterflies in the genus Mycalesis (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) are narrowly sympatric in the wet–dry tropics of north-eastern Australia. They show a range of ecological strategies and adaptations associated with contrasting habitats and varying selective pressures. Two abiotic factors, namely favorability (the reciprocal of seasonal adversity) and predictability (broadly the reciprocal of disturbance), were examined as potential environmental selective forces in shaping their life histories. Comparison of several key life history traits of the wet-season form revealed that the life histories of each species corresponded well with their habitat characteristics. M. perseus, which lives in habitats which are less favorable (i.e. adverse) and more unpredictable (i.e. temporary), shows many traits of an r-type strategy: smaller size, faster development, earlier maturation, higher fecundity, smaller egg size, and rapid population increase. By contrast, M. sirius and M. terminus, which live in more favorable and predictable (i.e. permanent) habitats, have many life history attributes and other characteristics in common which link them closer to K-type strategies. The only discrepancy is lower potential reproductive effort of M. perseus, which may be accounted for in terms of an evolutionary trade-off, such as with dispersal or dormancy. Other correlates associated with the M. perseus life history tactic include higher sex-size dimorphism, greater dispersal ability, better tolerance to adverse conditions, stronger phenotypic variation, greater degree of polyandry, and a more flexible breeding strategy. The life history patterns of these species are discussed in the context of evolutionary life history models, particularly the Southwood–Greenslade habitat templet.  相似文献

Seed dispersal is a critical stage in the life history of plants. It determines the initial pattern of juvenile distribution, and can influence community dynamics and the evolutionary trajectories of individual species. Vertebrate frugivores are the primary vector of seed dispersal in tropical forests; however, most studies of seed dispersal focus on birds, bats and monkeys. Nevertheless, South America harbors at least 200 species of frugivorous fishes, which move into temporarily flooded habitats during lengthy flood seasons and consume fruits that fall into the water; and yet, we know remarkably little about the quality of seed dispersal they effect. We investigated the seed dispersal activities of two species of large-bodied, commercially important fishes (Colossoma macropomum and Piaractus brachypomus, Characidae) over 3 years in Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve (Peru). We assessed the diet of these fishes during the flood season, conducted germination trials with seeds collected from digestive tracts, and quantified fruit availability. In the laboratory, we fed fruits to captive Colossoma, quantified the proportion of seeds defecated by adult and juvenile fish, and used these seeds in additional germination experiments. Our results indicate that Colossoma and Piaractus disperse large quantities of seeds from up to 35% of the trees and lianas that fruit during the flood season. Additionally, these seeds can germinate after floodwaters recede. Overexploitation has reduced the abundance of our focal fish species, as well as changed the age structure of populations. Moreover, older fish are more effective seed dispersers than smaller, juvenile fish. Overfishing, therefore, likely selects for the poorest seed dispersers, thus disrupting an ancient interaction between seeds and their dispersal agents. Summary Populations of the monocarpic plant Crepis tectorum were grown in a series of uniform environments to test the hypothesis that weedy populations are more r-selected than populations from a more natural habitat. Weedy populations exhibited a combination of r- and K-selected traits. The relatively rapid growth, the potential for a summer annual habit, and the relatively high fecundity that characterized at least one of the two weed populations studied were considered as r-selected traits favored in habitats of unpredictable duration. However, high levels of competition from other weedy species or from the crop in arable fields may explain at least some presumably K-selected traits observed in the weedy populations, e.g. relatively large seeds and late flowering in the summer. Results indicated that stress due to abiotic factors (strong winds, desiccation and nutrient deficiency) has been a more important selective factor than r- or K-selection, in non-weedy populations from calcareous grasslands (alvars) on the Baltic islands.  相似文献

Six strains of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria of the known organotrophic species Sphaerotilus natans were isolated from two North Caucasian sulfide springs. Similar to known colorless sulfur bacteria, all the strains accumulated elemental sulfur when grown in media with sulfide. Unlike previously isolated S. natans strains, new isolates had higher temperature growth optimum (33–37°C) and variable metabolism. All the strains were capable of organotrophic, lithoheterotrophic, and mixotrophic growth with sulfur compounds as electron donors for energy metabolism. Variable metabolism of new Sphaerotilus isolates is a highly important adaptation mechanism which facilitates extension of their geographic range and supports their mass development in new habitats, e.g. sulfide springs. Within the cluster of new isolates, the physiological heterogeneity was shown to result from the inducible nature of the enzymes of oxidative sulfur metabolism and from their resistance to aerobic cultivation.  相似文献

Mesostoma species and other typhloplanid flatworms are predators found in a wide variety of habitats. Laboratory observations of some Mesostoma spp found in shallow aquatic habitats (referred to as littoral species) have revealed a wide variety of prey killing mechanisms: 1) mucus trapping, 2) sit-and-wait predation, 3) releasing a toxin into the water, and 4) active searching. We review the existing literature on these mechanisms. We also describe for the first time the predatory behavior of a pelagic Mesostoma sp. found in Brazilian lakes. The existing literature is also reviewed to assess the potential impact of Mesostoma species and related genera on the aquatic invertebrate community. Mesostoma has a high potential for population increase and has been found in high densities in some shallow aquatic habitats. Single prey experiments show that a number of Mesostoma species feed heavily on mosquito larvae, some chironomid larvae and some daphnids but considerably less on most copepods and ostracods. Prey preference experiments reflect the same trends. Hence, these predation studies suggest that the flatworms, at high densities, should reduce populations of certain prey speces and, consequently, alter community structure. Field studies support this prediction. Mesostoma species, at high densities, appear to be important predators of mosquito larvae in shallow aquatic habitats even under conditions where high densities of planktivorous fishes had little impact. They also appear to alter zooplankton community structure. However, much of the field evidence is correlational and not experimental. No studies have assessed the impact of pelagic typhloplanids on zooplankton community structure. It is concluded that many more manipulative field experiments are needed to assess the impact of typhloplanids on aquatic invertebrate communities.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that dispersal and philopatry are components of a mixed evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS). The hypothesis predicts that fitness of dispersers should be equal to that of philopatric individuals. Alternatively, fitness of dispersers could be lower (the resident fitness hypothesis) or greater (the cost of dispersal hypothesis) than that of philopatric individuals. We compared fitness of individuals that moved to new habitats (emigrants) and those that remained within habitat boundaries (residents) in populations of the prairie vole, Microtus ochrogaster, and the meadow vole, M. pennsylvanicus. We established vole populations in four enclosures (). Within each enclosure, voles were free to move between four types of habitats that varied in the availability of supplemental food and the amount of vegetative cover. We analysed two fitness components: the survival rates of all individuals, and pregnancy rates of females. Our study showed that emigrants generally had greater fitness than residents and that the difference in fitness was habitat dependent (i.e. was greater when individuals were emigrating from low-quality habitats than from high-quality habitats). High-food, high-cover habitats were the only habitat types for which fitness of emigrants was lower than that of residents. Similar patterns occurred in both prairie voles and meadow voles. Our results support the cost of dispersal hypothesis.  相似文献

Genetic variation in the atpBrbcL intergenic spacer region of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) was investigated in Hygrophila pogonocalyx Hayata (Acanthaceae), an endangered and endemic species in Taiwan. In this aquatic species, seed dispersal from capsules via elasticity is constrained by gravity and is thereby confined within populations, resulting in limited gene flow between populations. In this study, a total of 849 bp of the cpDNA atpBrbcL spacer were sequenced from eight populations of H. pogonocalyx. Nucleotide diversity in the cpDNA is low (=0.00343±0.00041). The distribution of genetic variation among populations agrees with an isolation-by-distance model. Two geographically correlated groups, the western and eastern regions, were identified in a neighbor-joining tree and a minimum-spanning network. Phylogeographical analyses based on the cpDNA network suggest that the present-day differentiation between western and eastern groups of H. pogonocalyx resulted from past fragmentation. The differentiation between eastern and western populations may be ascribed to isolation since the formation of the Central Mountain Range about 5 million years ago, which is consistent with the rate estimates based on a molecular clock of cpDNA.Huang JC and Wang WK equally contributed to this work.  相似文献

We compared demography of populations along gradients of population density in two medium-sized herbivorous marsupials, the common brushtail possum Trichosurus vulpecula and the rufous bettong Aepyprymnus rufescens, to test for net dispersal from high density populations (acting as sources) to low density populations (sinks). In both species, population density was positively related to soil fertility, and variation in soil fertility produced large differences in population density of contiguous populations. We predicted that if source–sink dynamics were operating over this density gradient, we should find higher immigration rates in low-density populations, and positive relationships of measures of individual fitness—body condition, reproductive output, juvenile growth rates and survivorship—to population density. This was predicted because under source–sink dynamics, immigration from high-density sites would hold population density above carrying capacity in low-density sites. The study included 13 populations of these two species, representing a more than 50-fold range of density for each species, but we found that individual fitness, immigration rates and population turnover were similar in all populations. We conclude that net dispersal from high to low density populations had little influence on population dynamics in these species; rather, all populations appeared to be independently regulated at carrying capacity, with a balanced exchange of dispersers among populations. These two species have suffered recent reductions in range, and they are ecologically similar to other species that have declined to extinction in inland Australia. It has been argued that part of the cause of the vulnerability of species like these is that they exhibit source–sink dynamics, and disturbance to source habitats can therefore cause large-scale population collapses. The results of our study argue against this interpretation.  相似文献

In this paper, we review some potential implications of waterbird ecology for their role as dispersers of aquatic plants and invertebrates. We focus particularly on internal transport (endozoochory) by the Anatidae (mainly ducks) and shorebirds, groups especially important for dispersal processes owing to their abundance, migratory habitats and diets. We conduct a literature review to assess the seasonal patterns shown by Anatidae in consumption of seeds and plankton, the interspecific patterns in such consumption (including the effects of body size, bill morphology, etc.), and differences in habitat use (e.g., shoreline vs. open water specialists) and migration patterns between species (e.g., true migrants vs. nomads). We show that many shorebirds are important consumers of seeds as well as plankton, and suggest that their role in plant dispersal has been underestimated. This review confirms that Anatidae, shorebirds and other waterbirds have great potential as dispersers of aquatic organisms, but illustrates how closely related, sympatric bird species can have very different roles in dispersal of specific aquatic organisms. Furthermore, great spatial and temporal variation is likely in dispersal patterns realized by a given bird population. We present evidence suggesting that northbound dispersal of aquatic propagules by endozoochory during spring migration is a frequent process in the northern hemisphere. Much more systematic fieldwork and reanalysis of the existing data sets (e.g., from diet studies) are needed before the relative roles of various waterbird species as dispersers can be fully assessed.  相似文献

As assessed by the IUCN Mace–Lande system, seven (35%) of the 20 Alouatta species and subspecies with adequate data are classified as threatened, i.e., critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable (Rylands et al., 1995). This percentage is much lower than the 75 to 100% threatened taxa for the other large-bodied genera: Ateles, Lagothrix, and Brachyteles. Only 5 of the 16 Neotropical genera have lower percentages of threatened taxa than that of Alouatta: Cebuella, Pithecia, Saguinus, Saimiri, and Cebus. The threatened howler taxa occupy small distributions in areas of forest fragmentation. In general, populations are most affected by major habitat disturbance, such as total deforestation and flooding from dam construction, and by human hunters. Facilitated by their ability to exploit folivorous diets in small home ranges, howlers can tolerate considerable habitat fragmentation but not the increased exposure to hunting that may accompany it. Howlers seem particularly vulnerable to yellow fever and bot fly parasitism. Although the former threat may decrease by increasing fragmentation of the habitat, other sorts of parasitism may increase in disturbed habitats. The low genetic variability of the Central American howlers suggests a resistance to inbreeding depression potentially experienced during population bottlenecks. Greater between-population variability may still exist. Although howlers are not readily bred in captivity, they respond well to translocation. Translocation has been successfully achieved for 4 howler species and is a viable option for introducing new genetic variability into population fragments and repopulating areas from which howlers are extinct. Their pattern of bisexual dispersal facilitates colonization of regenerating habitats, and in suitable, protected habitats they have shown the capacity for strong population recovery.  相似文献

The delimitation of dispersal routes used by individuals moving between populations has the potential to direct management efforts aimed at limiting the spread of invasive species. Red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) have successfully invaded aquatic ecosystems across much of the globe, causing loss of biodiversity and habitat destruction. Our research focuses on a Mojave Desert spring system in Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, where a combination of anthropogenic habitat degradation and the establishment of invasive species have caused extinctions, extirpations, and severe population declines of endangered fishes. To infer the invasion history of hydrologically isolated springs, we tested alternative hypotheses of P. clarkii dispersal routes and colonization events throughout Ash Meadows using a landscape genetics approach that combined analysis of microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA genotypes with geographic information system (GIS) mapping. Modeled historic outflows, in conjunction with waterway mapping based on aerial imagery and LiDAR data, show variable drainage routes across the flat topography of Ash Meadows. Estimates of gene flow between P. clarkii populations revealed the drainages utilized by crayfish to move from central to peripheral springs. Additionally, analyses of mtDNA haplotype diversity and distribution suggest isolated springs were colonized by few individuals, and subsequent emigration has been rare. These results will inform ecological restoration in Ash Meadows by directing the placement of barriers to prevent reinvasion of distal springs after eradication of P. clarkii populations. Finally, this research provides a case study for elucidating the functional connectivity of ephemerally connected landscapes, using the integration of genetic and GIS techniques.  相似文献

In this study we assessed the effectiveness of rodents as dispersers of Quercus ilex in a patchy landscape in southeastern Spain. We experimentally followed the fates of 3,200 marked and weighed acorns from dispersal through the time of seedling emergence over three years. Rodents handled about 99% of acorns, and dispersed 67% and cached 7.4% of the dispersed acorns. Most caches were recovered and consumed, and only 1.3% of the original experimental acorns were found alive in caches the following spring. Dispersal distances were short (mean = 356.2 cm, median = 157 cm) and strongly right-skewed. Heavier acorns were dispersed further and were more likely to be cached and survive than lighter acorns. All caches were in litter or soil, and each contained a single acorn. Rodents moved acorns nonrandomly, mostly to oaks and pines. Most surviving acorns were either in oaks, a poor microhabitat for oak recruitment, or shrubs, a suitable microhabitat for oak recruitment. Our results suggest that rodents, by burying a relatively high proportion of acorns singly in shrubs and pines, act as moderately effective dispersers of Q. ilex. Nonetheless, this dispersal comes at a very heavy cost.  相似文献
