The peer interactions of 6 infant chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) ranging in age from 18 to 50 months were observed in a seminatural context. The infants and their mothers lived as members of a captive social group at the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center. An analysis of contact initiations between infants indicated that the most preferred peer interactant was the youngest and the least preferred was the oldest infant. Infants also initiated more interactions with the offspring of adults that had the closest relationships with both themselves and their mothers. These results indicate that a number of factors may influence the peer affiliations of infant chimpanzees, including the age of the infant and the mother's social relationships.  相似文献

The general course of mother-infant relationships among free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) on Cayo Santiago is remarkably similar both qualitatively and quantitatively to that observed in the socially living captive colony at the MRC Unit at Madingley, England. Nevertheless, small but consistent differences appear to be due to differences between mothers in the two environments rather than differences between infants. Captive mothers may be described as more protective and less encouraging of early independence in their infants than free-ranging mothers. Moreover, captive pairs have become more like free-ranging pairs over the years, perhaps as captive mothers have been allowed to raise their infants in the presence of kin. A unitary concept of environmental complexity is not useful in accounting for the results.  相似文献

Early organization of activity states was studied in 17 tufted capuchin (Cebus apella) infants from birth to 11 weeks of age. Development of exploration and interactions with mothers and other group members were studied in 14 of these infants up to the age of 1 year. Activity profiles changed from 3 to 8 weeks as infants began to move off mothers and explore their environments. From 2 to 6 months time with mothers decreased; time alone increased correspondingly. Time spent with other group members did not vary significantly over the first year. By 7–9 months capuchin infants spent more time alone or with other group members than with mothers, although weaning was still not completed by the end of the first year. Simple environmental exploration began in the 2nd month and reached stable levels by 4 months. Complex manipulation of food and objects first began at 3–4 months and increased to stable levels in the second half of the first year. Some preliminary differences were evident between infants living in indoor cages and those living in indoor/ outdoor runs. Infants in cages spent less time in dorsal contact with mothers, and less time in social play and proximity to other animals than those in runs. Instead, infants in cages spent more time alone and engaged in more manipulation of food. Some measures of social and exploratory behavior showed a high degree of variability which may be useful in exploring individual differences in infant temperament or reactivity. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

To determine how the birth and development of infants influence their mothers' social relationships with other adult troop members, we observed two free-ranging troops of ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) at the Berenty Reserve, Madagascar. The number of acts of affiliative contact that the mothers received from other adult troop members during the first and second months of infant life were significantly higher than those before they gave birth, and the values during the third month were as low as that before giving birth. Two mothers received acts of affiliative contact less frequently after their infants died, compared with the values while the infants were alive. On the other hand, more than 95% of all acts of licking of infants by adult troop members other than their mothers occurred when the infants were in contact with their mothers. These findings suggest that infants per se and mothers per se were not attractive, but rather the mother-infant pair was attractive to other troop members. Acts of infant-licking were observed in almost all mother-mother pairs and mother-non-mother adult female pairs, and in two thirds of mother-adult male pairs. Moreover, the frequency of infant-licking was not affected by female parity, female and male dominance rank, or infant sex. Therefore, acts of infant-licking, which are widespread among troop members, may function to make or maintain stable social relationships.  相似文献

This study documents age-related changes in the interactions of wild-born cynomolgus macaque mothers and their infants living in individual cages during the first 14 weeks of infant life. Body contact between mother and infant, maternal holding, and infant sucking were found to decrease, and the mothers showed an increased frequency of aggression toward their infants with age. These results were broadly similar to those reported for mother-infant interactions in other macaques living in social groups. Nevertheless, a clear difference between the present cynomolgus macaques and other macaques in social groups was apparent. The cynomolgus macaque mothers tended to permit their infants to move about freely without displaying maternal protectiveness such as restraint or retrieval, unlike other macaque mothers in social groups. Such maternal behaviors might derive from the experience of living in individual cages for many years and the relative safety of living in individual cages. The lack of maternal restraint and retrieval could be responsible for the observed sex differences in behavior: male infants moved more actively, and broke, and made contact with their mothers more frequently than did female infants. Moreover, mothers of female infants held and groomed them more frequently and were less aggressive toward them.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between maternal behavior and infant disability in 12 mother-infant dyads for the first 5 weeks of infant life in the free-ranging Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) group on Awaji Island, Japan, from May to September 2001. Congenital limb malformations are prevalent in this population, and as such carry implications for behavior and conservation. We did not detect any differences in maternal activity budgets, mother-infant physical contact, infant holding, and overall nursing and infant transport time between mothers of non-disabled infants, disabled infants that were able to cling to their mothers, and disabled infants whose limb structure prevented clinging. Mothers of infants with limb malformations severe enough to prevent normal clinging behavior manually supported their infants during nursing and locomotion significantly more than other mothers did theirs. Increased support-carrying and support-nursing, and higher frequencies of holding the infant to one's ventrum, suggest that mothers of extensively malformed infants may be investing more to facilitate the survival of their offspring and that infant disability appears to be influencing maternal behaviors in this population.  相似文献

The behavioral interactions of 22 infant and mother Japanese macaques with other group members were studied. Focal-animal observations were made from the time of each infant’s birth until 1 year of age. Infants and mothers both displayed exceedingly strong preferences for associating with matrilineal kin and, specifically, for female kin. The degree of genetic relatedness was positively correlated with levels of spatial proximity, contact, grooming, aggression, and play. Overall frequencies of interactions with nonkin were very low, and partner sex was not an important factor in interactions with nonkin. There were no significant differences between male and female infants in interactions with kin versus nonkin. There was only one significant difference between male and female infants in interactions with males versus females: female infants showed stronger preferences for initiating proximity with females over males than did male infants. Because mothers provide the focal point for infant interactions during the first year of life, we compared the behavior of infants and mothers. Mothers were the recipients of more social interactions than were infants, mothers engaged in more grooming than did infants, and infants engaged in more social play than did mothers. These findings are only partially consistent with kin-selection theory, and the inadequacies of studying matrilineal kin discrimination to test kin selection are reviewed. The near-absence of infant sex differences in associations with social partners suggests that although maternal kin other than the mother are important to infant socialization, they probably do not contribute to the development of behavioral sex differences until after the first year of life.  相似文献

Sixteen multiparous Barbary macaque females with newborns were studied over a 16 month period within the context of their naturally formed group. Analysis of their social behavior revealed 1) triadic interactions involving focal females, their newborns, and other group members occurred mainly with other females; and 2) mothers with female newborns interacted mainly with females of their own matriline, while mothers with male newborns interacted mainly with nonmatriline females. Observed in two successive birth seasons, this pattern indicates that partners of maternal interactions chose each other according to the sex of the newborn. Measures of distance from the mother also reflected differences between infants of different sex. At about five months of age, female infants were observed close to their mothers significantly more often than males. This finding follows the pattern of a sex-specific infant socialization process which integrates female infants into the network of their matrilines and male infants into the broader group. Ten-to 17-week-old rhesus monkey infants that received hits from companions other than their mother at high rates (relative to their rates of involvement in playful social encounters with those companions) tended to be members of mother-infant dyads that were vigilant. Criteria of vigilance were frequent contacts between mother and infant during the first 5 sec of the infants’ social encounters and/or a bias of mother-infant contacts toward that time. Infants that received few hits per encounter came from both vigilant and nonvigilant dyads. When analyzed alone, mothers’ rates showed the same trends. High levels of vigilance tended to reduce infants’rates of making social contacts. Maternal social rank and other measures of the infants’ social involvement were not correlated with vigilance. There is no evidence that mothers and infants were in conflict with each other about interrupting the infants’ encounters. Understanding vigilance becomes important whenever vigilant activity conflicts with other activities. Special problems arise because decisions about vigilance levels require judgments of risk based on the kinds of events that occur only rarely if vigilance is effective. A model providing a framework for studies of vigilance against the risks of infants’ social activities was developed. It recognizes that (1) risk-reducing vigilant behavior can conflict with acquiring information about risk; (2) in social situations where reliable estimates of risk are impossible, individuals might follow rules of thumb (e.g., be restrictive) rather than modify behavior moment by moment according to the current situation;and (3) at the dyad’s optimum balance between vigilance for the current infant and investment in subsequent off-spring, the infant will not be totally protected, so that while dyads at higher risks are more vigilant, the risks are also realized to a greater extent (e.g., itin terms of the number of hits received per encounter).  相似文献

Studies of infant rhesus macaques have generally reported sex differences in the frequency of expression of some behaviour patterns, such as rough-and-tumble play and socio-sexual mounting. In contrast, sex differences in other behaviour patterns, such as proximity to the mother, have been less consistantly reported. Using data on the behavioural development of infant rhesus macaques living in captive social groups, we have attempted to provide further evidence for, or against, sex differences in behaviour and to investigate the possible influence of maternal rank and parity on sex differences in infant behaviour and mother-infant interactions. The behaviour of 14 male and 20 female infants and their mothers was studied during the first six months of life, including measures of play behaviour socio-sexual mounting, and mother-infant interactions. Our data reveal that, on average, male infants exhibited more rough-and-tumble play and mounting than female infants, and also exhibited stationary play, chasing play, and initiated play more frequently than females. Such sex differences appear to be robust in macaques and have been reported in a variety of housing conditions. male and female infants did not differ in the amount of time spent at particular distances from their mothers, and mothers were not found to behave differently towards sons and daughters, using measures of restraint, rejection, and grooming. These results are in contrast to previous studies on singly-housed mother-infant pairs but similar to those on free-ranging populations. Mothers did behave differently towards their infants depending upon the mother's rank and previous number of offspring. These maternal characteristics may have significant consequences for the behavioural development of both male and female infant primates.  相似文献

The behavior of two lowland gorilla mother-infant pairs living in a social group at Zoo Atlanta was compared in an indoor holding area vs. an outdoor exhibit. Focal animal data were collected for each pair during 30-min observation sessions over 24 days, alternating between indoors and outdoors. A variety of individual and social behaviors differed in the two conditions, particularly infant behaviors and infant-controlled behaviors. Mothers and infants spent more time closer together inside than outside, and infants left mothers more and mothers approached infants more outside than inside. Additional differences included more object examination and solitary play by the infants, and more feeding by the mothers, outside. Mothers autogroomed more and infants engaged in more self-manipulation inside. Additionally, there were significantly more aggressive display behaviors directed toward the mother-infant pairs inside than outside, and the adults engaged in coprophagy inside but not outside. A variety of other behaviors measured did not change between the two environments. Data from over 400 hr of observation of mother-infant rhesus macaques indicate that during the first 12 weeks of lactation infants are at risk from other group members and that mothers use aggression as well as restraining to protect them. Maternal aggression was negatively correlated with infant restraining. High-ranking mothers reacted aggressively to individuals handling their infants more than did middle- and low-ranking mothers. Conversely, middle- and low-ranking mothers restrained their infants more than did high-ranking mothers. Maternal aggression did not vary with infant age. Maternal aggression was directed toward a higher proportion of higher-ranking adult females and their immature offspring and was more likely to be followed by counter-aggression than nonmaternal aggression, i.e. aggression not related to interactions involving the infant. Middle-and low-ranking mothers suffered higher costs in terms of retaliation than high-ranking mothers. It is argued that the occurrence and distribution of maternal aggression among species and individuals should depend on the risk posed to infants by conspecifics as well as on the characteristics of the social structure (e.g. degree of asymmetry of agonistic contests) and of the mother (e.g. her dominance rank) which may affect the probability of retaliation.  相似文献

We have documented several sexually dimorphic patterns of behavior that develop during the first year of life in infant Japanese macaques and their mothers. Mothers treated their infants differently by sex—mothers of males broke contact with them and retrieved them more frequently than did mothers of females. And mothers of male infants moved more frequently than did mothers of female infants. Male infants played more, played in larger groups, and mounted more frequently; female infants groomed and spent more time close to other monkeys in larger social groups than did males. Female infants were also punished by other group members more frequently than were male infants. We conclude that male and female Japanese macaque infants receive differential treatment early in life by both their own mothers and other animals, and males and females in turn treat their mothers and other animals differently. There appears to be a reciprocal relationship between the behavior of infants, mothers and other social partners that contributes to the development of sexually dimorphic patterns of behavior.  相似文献

The holding or transferring of newborn infants at less than 1 month old by individuals other than the mothers was studied in 24 species of New and Old World monkeys under captive conditions. The observed monkey species could be divided into two types. Group A included eight species of three families where the mothers were tolerant to ‘infant transfer’ and readily retrieved their infants from other individuals, the frequency of infant transfer being high. The infant transfer of this group was termed allomothering behaviour. Group B included 16 species of two families where infant transfer did not occur at all or its frequency was very low and the mothers were possessive of their infants. Once transfer did occur, the infant could not be reclaimed with ease. The relationships between the two groups and taxonomic status, life forms and social types were evaluated in a total of 45 species from the present study and the literature. Correspondences were found with social type and taxonomic status. That is, species of Group A were seen only in the family or one-male type, except for one species, although none of this group appeared in the Cercopithecinae regardless of social types. The significance of infant transfer is discussed in relation to the participants' responses to it and the correlations between the two groups and social types.  相似文献

The maternal behavior of primiparous rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), peer-reared since 1/2 years(s) of age as part of aHerpesvirus simiae (herpes B-virus) screening protocol, was examined and compared to a control group of conspecifics reared in their natal group. Infant survival was significantly higher in control groups as compared to the test group, a result attributed to the high incidence of infant kidnapping/abandonment in the test group. Among the test subjects, infant survival rate increased as the birth season progressed, thus it is possible that exposure to mothers/infants helped in the maternal success of those females who gave birth later in the season. Test group infants were touched by group members significantly more than the infants of control subjects, whereas these infants were groomed by their mothers and in a ventral position for a greater time relative to the infants of the test subjects. This study suggests that females, partially reared in peer groups, may be at early risk for maternal incompetence and consequent greater infant mortality, and that exposure to mother-infant dyads may augment the proficiency of maternal skills.  相似文献

The development of social relations was studied in 11 infant monkeys over the first ten weeks of life : 5 subjects in a rhesus macaque group (Macaca mulatta), 3 in a long-tailed macaque group (M. fascicularis) and 3 in a Tonkean macaque group (M. tonkeana). Tonkean infants were found to interact with many different group members because of the permissiveness of their mothers, while social contacts of rhesus and long-tailed infants are less varied due to the restrictiveness of their mothers. These differences were consistent with patterns of adult-adult interactions, Tonkean macaques showing less intense agonistic interactions than the other two species.  相似文献

为探索母婴皮肤细菌群落特征,本研究对8对母婴7个不同皮肤部位的细菌群落进行焦磷酸测序分析。结果显示,皮肤细菌主要属于放线菌门(Actinobacteria)、厚壁菌门(Firmicutes)、变形菌门(Proteobacteria)和拟杆菌门(Bacteroidetes)。总体而言,母婴皮肤细菌群落的组成相似,但丰度存在差异。母亲皮肤表面的丙酸杆菌属(Propionibacterium)丰度显著高于婴儿(P<0.05)。在婴儿皮肤表面,链球菌属(Streptococcus)和葡萄球菌属(Staphylococcus)最丰富;剖宫产出生的婴儿额头表面葡萄球菌属的丰度显著高于自然分娩出生的婴儿(P<0.05)。婴儿皮肤表面特有的常驻菌属包括孪生球菌属(Gemella)、普雷沃菌属(Prevotella)、罗思菌属(Rothia)和韦荣球菌属(Veillonella)与成人常见的口腔细菌一致,表明母亲的口腔细菌对婴儿早期皮肤微生态有一定的塑造作用。婴儿皮肤表面的细菌种类与自己母亲相近,各细菌的含量则与其他婴儿相近。母亲皮脂溢出部位(额头和背部)的细菌多样性较其他部位低,且皮肤潮湿、干燥、脂溢部位之间细菌群落差异较大;而婴儿背部细菌群落与肘窝相似,额头与手背相似。  相似文献

Seven groups of socially living baboons between the ages of 0 and three months were observed at the Southwest Foundation for Research and Education, San Antonio, Texas. Six groups were harems containing one adult male (the biological father), the nursing mothers and their infants, and adult females without offspring. The other group consisted only of nursing mothers and their infants. All seven groups were housed in identical outdoor enclosures 45 m × 27 m × 23 m. Fourteen behavioral categories were tested. The hypothesis that behavioral sex differences in infant baboons are influenced by the presence of an adult male was not supported by the test results. Sex differences were not detected in either the mother-reared infants or in harem-reared infants. Mother-reared infants (n=13) had significantly greater scores for contact aggression and non-contact aggression categories, whereas harem-reared infants (n=12) scored significantly higher for locomotion, non-aggressive social behaviors, exploration, and rough-and-tumble play.  相似文献

Infant tolerance by adult males has been observed in many primate species with multimale–multifemale mating systems, but males do not usually initiate interactions with infants. In male philopatric species, such as spider monkeys, adult males within a community exhibit high levels of cooperation and affiliation, and they might therefore be motivated to create bonds with potential future allies. Based on this hypothesis we predicted that adult male spider monkeys would participate in infant handling more than adult females and they would preferentially direct handling toward male infants. Between January 2008 and July 2010, we collected 884?h of observation on a community of wild spider monkeys at Runaway Creek Nature Reserve in Belize. During this period we observed 120 incidences of affiliative interactions between infants and adults other than their mother. The adult initiated the majority of nonmother adult–infant interactions (78?%). All available infants (5 males, 7 females) were handled during the study. All 9 of the community adult males handled infants but only 7 of 14 adult females did so. Adult males handled infants significantly more often than did adult females and males also handled young infants more often than older infants. Significant infant sex differences in handling appeared in infants >6?mo when adult males handled males significantly more than females. The patterns of infant handling among age–sex class dyads reflect the affiliative social patterns that we see in adult spider monkeys. These results provide support for the hypothesis that adult males preferentially handle male infants as a strategy for fostering social bonds.  相似文献

Data from a 35-year study of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) at Madingley, Cambridge, were used to investigate sex ratio biases associated with maternal rank. Data were available from two colonies, the Old colony (1960–81) and New colony (1982–93). Overall, top-ranking mothers gave birth to 30.9% sons, while non-top mothers gave birth to 58.4% sons. Among non-top mothers, middle- and bottom-ranking ones had 59.0 and 55.0% sons, respectively. Top mothers' daughter biases were strongest in matrilines with two adult females in the year the infants were conceived (15.4 sons and 14.3% sons in Old and New colonies). Non-top mothers' son biases (88.9 and 71.0% in Old and New colonies) were strongest in matrilines with 3 females. The findings are discussed in relation to the colonies' small matriline sizes and data on breeding performance and infant survival, which indicate the costs to mothers of different rank of having different sex infants. Overall, top-ranking mothers were more likely to breed in two successive years (78.6%) than non-top mothers (56.7%). Infant survival to 7 days was significantly higher in the New colony (89.0%) than the Old colony (75.3%), with daughters born to Old colony mothers doing especially poorly. We point out that between-group and between-species comparisons of sex ratio effects depend critically on how females are assigned to rank categories, and require information about divergences of sex ratios from 50:50 in each category. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献
