In this study morphological variation and the potential for competition to affect biomass and seedling selection of the families of five populations of Rumex acetosella L. sampled along a successional old-field gradient have been investigated. Seeds from 25 families were submitted to four competitive regimes: no competition (one plant per pot), medium competition (two plants/ pot taking plants from the same population), high within-population competition (four individuals from the same population in a pot) and high between-population competition (four individuals from two different populations in a pot). Eight traits were analysed after 3 months of growth for variation among families within populations. A significant difference among families within the two older populations was recorded for sexual biomass and related components. High sensitivity of these traits to density was observed in all populations except the youngest, suggesting specialization to particular environmental conditions in late successional populations, and a good adaptive capacity to buffer environmental variation in the pioneer population. Little significant interaction between competitive regimes and families within populations was found, i.e. genotypes within each population showed little variation in their response to environmental variation. Genotypic variance decreased with increasing competitive conditions for the majority of the traits. However, the percentage of variance in sexual reproduction explained by family was stable among treatments. Tradeoffs between vegetative reproduction and sexual reproduction were recorded at the population level along the successional gradient, with increasing competitive conditions. As succession proceeds, we observed a decrease in sexual reproduction and an increase in vegetative reproduction. At the family level, correlation among traits were similar when plants were grown in the absence of competition and at high density, with a significant negative correlation between sexual reproduction and vegetative reproduction. For both sprout number and sexual biomass, the performance of families grown under all the treatments was positively correlated. Together these results indicate allocational constraints on the reproductive biology of R. acetosella that may be favoured by natural selection and have influenced population differentiation along the successional gradient. However, they also revealed that the potential exists for evolutionary specialization through plasticity, in response to variation in environmental conditions.  相似文献

Summary We analyse demographic data from a seven-year study of the annual crucifer Erophila verna which showed two-year cycles of abundance in the field. The unusual behaviour of this population is shown to be the consequence of overcompensating density-dependence. Very local differences in germination succes between plots can account for observed differences in their population dynamics over the long term.  相似文献

Empirical and theoretical work has suggested that plants can change their compensatory responses to herbivory as they develop. However, such a relationship is likely to be more complex than previously thought since the amount and type of damage a plant receives can also change as the plant develops. Here, we determined the survival, growth, and reproductive output of plants (Actinocephalus polyanthus) from different ontogenetic stages that received variable levels of natural or simulated herbivore damage. Juvenile plants and non‐reproductive adults in which leaves were damaged showed full vegetative compensation, whereas pre‐reproductive plants were not able to replace the lost leaves. However, these same pre‐reproductive plants produced more inflorescences and thus more seeds and seedlings than control plants. In contrast, damage to vegetative and/or reproductive structures during the reproductive phase resulted in a negative effect on seed and seedling production. Herbivory effects on plant survival, growth, and reproduction during the vegetative and pre‐reproductive phases were independent of the amount of damage. However, during reproduction, the magnitude of these effects was strongly influenced by the amount of damage and the reproductive stage of the plant at the time of the damage. In short, our results demonstrate that the survival, growth, and reproductive responses to herbivory of A. polyanthus can be dependent on the timing and/or intensity of damage. The reproductive response of A. polyanthus to our simulated herbivory treatments during the pre‐reproductive phase represents an example of overcompensation. Furthermore, it indicates that vegetative regrowth is not necessarily a driving factor for tolerance.  相似文献

I measured the effect of early reproduction on subsequent growth and survival in the alpine perennial wildflower, Polemonium viscosum. Measurements were made over 4 yr on 34 maternal sibships under natural conditions. A significant phenotypic cost of early reproduction characterized the study population. Plants that flowered after only one year's growth had twice as many leaves and 25% more shoots than nonflowering individuals of equal age. However, early flowering decreased leaf number by 18% in the subsequent year and survivorship by 20% after two years relative to changes in leaf number and survival of nonflowering plants. For such trade-offs to shape the further evolution of reproductive schedules, flowering probability and those age-specific components of plant size that represent the energetic currency for reproductive costs must be heritable. Although families showed significant heterogeneity in the probability of early flowering, most (62%) entirely failed to flower. Moreover, phenotypic variation in vegetative size components at ages 1 and 2 had little genetic basis. Only at ages 3 and 4, after vegetative and demographic costs of early reproduction had been incurred, did vegetative size components (leaf length and number, and shoot number) vary significantly among families. Results of this study provide little evidence of a genetically based trade-off between early reproduction and subsequent survival in P. viscosum.  相似文献

Changes in gibberellins (GAs), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and cytokinins associated with the transition from vegetative growth to reproductive growth in Humulus lupulus L. buds and leaves harvested at fortnight intervals were studied. During vegetative growth, GA1 increased gradually and the lowest content was observed during flower development. Both GA3 and GA4 showed a dramatic increase in the samples taken from the apical part of axillary branches from plants 4–5 m high, which corresponds to the maximum vegetative development prior to macroscopically visible inflorescences. Notable increases in the cytokinins trans-zeatin (t-Z), isopentenyladenine (iP), and the riboside and ribotide forms of iP were also obtained. The auxin, indole-3-acetic acid, was the most abundant plant hormone, and its content was highest during vegetative growth. These results show for the first time a relationship between endogenous hormone profiles and both vegetative and reproductive development in hop plants, which may be relevant for future research on the control of the flowering by exogenous hormone applications.  相似文献

To understand the genetic regulation of vegetative to reproductive transition in higher plants, further characterization of the Arabidopsis mutant embryonic flower1, emf1, was conducted. Using three flowering symptoms, we showed that emf1 mutants could only grow reproductive and not rosette shoots under five different growth conditions. The mutant embryos did not produce the typical tunica–corpus shoot apical structures at the heart-, torpedo-, and mature stages. The divergent shoot apical development during mutant and wild-type embryogenesis indicated that the wild-type EMF1 gene was expressed in early embryogenesis. Mutations in the EMF1 gene affected the embryonic shoot apical development and caused the germinating embryo and regenerating callus to grow inflorescence, instead of rosette, shoots. Our results support the hypothesis that the EMF1 gene regulates the switch between vegetative and reproductive growth in Arabidopsis.  相似文献

Vegetative plants of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. form a compact rosette of leaves in which internode growth is virtually arrested. Rapid extension of the internodes occurs after flower buds are present in the reproductive apex. Under natural radiation, continuous light from fluorescent lamps, or short photoperiods of light from fluorescent lamps, plants of the phyB cry1 double mutant (lacking both phytochrome B and cryptochrome 1) did not form normal rosettes because all the internodes showed some degree of elongation. Internode elongation was weak in the phyB single mutant and absent in the cry1 mutant, indicating redundancy between phytochrome B and cryptochrome 1. The absence of phytochrome A caused no effects. The failure to form normal rosettes was conditional because internode elongation was arrested at low temperatures in all the mutant combinations. In contrast, the temperature dependence of phytochrome B and cryptochrome 1 effects on hypocotyl growth was weak. The elongation of the internodes in phyB cry1 was not accompanied by early flowering as showed by the lack of effects on the final number of leaves. Apex dissection indicated that in phyB cry1 double mutants internode elongation anticipated the transition from the vegetative to the reproductive stage. Thus, stem growth in Arabidopsis thaliana is not fully dependent on the program of reproductive development. Received: 2 June 1999 / Accepted: 13 August 1999  相似文献

A model of growth and reproduction in annual plants was developed by Cohen (1971, J. Theor. Biol.33, 299–307) to determine the allocation strategy which maximizes seed yield. The model divides the plant into vegetative and reproductive parts and predicts that yield is maximized by a strategy consisting of a switch from purely vegetative to strictly reproductive growth. We generalize Cohen's model to include vegetative and reproductive loss terms. Both growth and loss rates are allowed to vary with time. Using optimal control theory we find that seed yield is maximized by a strategy consisting of multiple switches between vegetative and reproductive growth, for certain ranges of the model parameters. In natural systems a predictable vegetative loss burst may be necessary to promote multiple switches.  相似文献

We have investigated the interactions between resource assimilation and storage in rosette leaves, and their impact on the growth and reproduction of the annual species Arabidopsis thaliana. The resource balance was experimentally perturbed by changing (i) the external nutrition, by varying the nitrogen supply; (ii) the assimilation and reallocation of resources from rosette leaves to reproductive organs, by cutting or covering rosette leaves at the time of early flower bud formation, and (iii) the internal carbon and nitrogen balance of the plants, by using isogenic mutants either lacking starch formation (PGM mutant) or with reduced nitrate uptake (NU mutant). When plants were grown on high nitrogen, they had higher concentrations of carbohydrates and nitrate in their leaves during the rosette phase than during flowering. However, these storage pools did not significantly contribute to the bulk flow of resources to seeds. The pool size of stored resources in rosette leaves at the onset of seed filling was very low compared to the total amount of carbon and nitrogen needed for seed formation. Instead, the rosette leaves had an important function in the continued assimilation of resources during seed ripening, as shown by the low seed yield of plants whose leaves were covered or cut off. When a key resource became limiting, such as nitrogen in the NU mutants and in plants grown on a low nitrogen supply, stored resources in the rosette leaves (e.g. nitrogen) were remobilized, and made a larger contribution to seed biomass. A change in nutrition resulted in a complete reversal of the plant response: plants shifted from high to low nutrition exhibited a seed yield similar to that of plants grown continuously on a low nitrogen supply, and vice versa. This demonstrates that resource assimilation during the reproductive phase determines seed production. The PGM mutant had a reduced growth rate and a smaller biomass during the rosette phase as a result of changes in respiration caused by a high turnover of soluble sugars ( Caspar et al. 1986 ; W. Schulze et al. 1991 ). During flowering, however, the vegetative growth rate in the PGM mutant increased, and exceeded that of the wild-type. By the end of the flowering stage, the biomass of the PGM mutant did not differ from that of the wild-type. However, in contrast to the wild-type, the PGM mutant maintained a high vegetative growth rate during seed formation, but had a low rate of seed production. These differences in allocation in the PGM mutant result in a significantly lower seed yield in the starchless mutants. This indicates that starch formation is not only an important factor during growth in the rosette phase, but is also important for whole plant allocation during seed formation. The NU mutant resembled the wild-type grown on a low nitrogen supply, except that it unexpectedly showed symptoms of carbohydrate shortage as well as nitrogen deficiency. In all genotypes and treatments, there was a striking correlation between the concentrations of nitrate and organic nitrogen and shoot growth on the one hand, and sucrose concentration and root growth on the other. In addition, nitrate reductase activity (NRA) was correlated with the total carbohydrate concentration: low carbohydrate levels in starchless mutants led to low NRA even at high nitrate supply. Thus the concentrations of stored carbohydrates and nitrate are directly or indirectly involved in regulating allocation.  相似文献

In vegetative plants of Lolium multiflorum removal of the two youngest emerging leaves resulted in increased expansion of basal tiller buds. A similar release of inhibition of tiller buds took place if the floriferous apex was removed. The surgical procedures did not affect the response. Under conditions of N-deficiency total tiller number was reduced but on removal of the apex the deficient plants showed an increased initial rate of tiller bud expansion. Apical dominance during the vegetative stage of growth in this grass was apparently due to the expanding leaves in the vegetative apex, but in the flowering plant the control was exerted by the inflorescence or the elongating stem.  相似文献

Eggplants (Solanum melongena L. cv. Bonica) were grown in a glasshouse during summer under natural light with one unbranched shoot or one shoot with 3 to 4 branches and with or without fruit in quartz sand buffered and not buffered with 0.5% CaCO3 (w : v), respectively. Nutrient solutions supplied contained nitrate or ammonium as the sole nitrogen source. Compared with nutrient solutions containing nitrate (10 mM), solutions containing ammonium (10 mM) caused a decrease in net photosynthesis of eggplants during early stages of vegetative growth when grown in quartz sand not buffered with CaCO3. The decrease was not observed before leaves showed interveinal chlorosis. In contrast, net photosynthesis after bloom at first increased more rapidly in eggplants supplied with ammonium than with nitrate nitrogen. However, even in this case, net photosynthesis decreased four weeks later when ammonium nutrition was continued. The decrease was accompanied by epinasty and interveinal chlorosis on the lower leaves and later by severe wilting, leaf drop, stem lesions, and hampered growth of stems, roots, and fruits. These symptoms appeared later on plants not bearing fruits than on plants bearing fruits. If nutrient solutions containing increasing concentrations of ammonium (0.5–30 mM) were supplied after the time of first fruit ripening, shoot growth and set of later flowers and fruits were promoted. In contrast, vegetative growth and reproduction was only slightly affected by increasing the concentration of nitrate in the nutrient solutions. In quartz sand buffered with CaCO3 ammonium nutrition caused deleterious effects only under low light conditions (shade) and on young plants during rapid fruit growth. If eggplants were supplied with ammonium nitrogen before bloom, vegetative growth was promoted, and set of flowers and fruit occurred earlier than on plants supplied with nitrate. Furthermore, the number of flowers and fruit yield increased. These effects of ammonium nutrition were more pronounced when plants were grown with branched shoots than with unbranched shoots. The results indicate that vegetative and reproductive growth of eggplants may be manipulated without causing injury to the plants by supplying ammonium nitrogen as long as the age of the plants, carbohydrate reserves of the roots, quantity of ammonium nitrogen supplied, and pH of the growth medium are favourable. Arabidopsis thaliana ecotype Columbia and Landsberg erecta were studied. Horizontal clinorotation affected little germination of seeds, growth and development of rosette leaves and roots during early vegetative growth stage, and the onset of the bolting of inflorescence axis and flower formation in reproductive growth stage, although it suppressed elongation of inflorescence axes. The clinorotation substantially reduced the numbers of siliques and seeds in Landsberg erecta, and completely inhibited seed production in Columbia. Seeds produced in Landsberg erecta on the clinostat were capable of germinating and developing rosette leaves normally on the ground. On the other hand, growth of pin-formed mutant (pin/pin) of Arabidopsis ecotype Enkheim, which has a unique structure of inflorescence axis with no flower and extremely low levels of auxin polar transport activity, was inhibited and the seedlings frequently died during vegetative stage on the clinostat. Seed formation and inflorescence growth of the seedlings with normal shape (pin/+ or +/+) were also suppressed on the clinostat. These results suggest that the growth and development of Arabidopsis, especially in reproductive growth stage, is suppressed under simulated microgravity conditions on a clinostat. To complete the life cycle probably seems to be quite difficult, although it is possible in some ecotypes. Received 18 June 1999/ Accepted in revised form 27 August 1999  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. HD 2285) was grown in control (C) and heated (H) open top chambers (OTCs) for entire period of growth and development till maturity. The mean maximum temperature of the entire period was 3 °C higher in H-compared to C-OTCs. Net photosynthetic rate (P N) measured at different temperature (20–40 °C) of C-and H-grown plants showed greater sensitivity to high temperature in H-plants. P N measured at respective growth temperature was lower in H-compared to C-plants. The CO2 and irradiance response curves of photosynthesis also showed lesser response in H-compared to C-plants. The initial slope of P N versus internal CO2 concentration (P N/C i) curve was lower in H-than C-plants indicating ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) limitation. In irradiance response curve, the plateau was lower in H-compared to C-plants which is interpreted as RuBPCO limitation. RuBPCO content in the leaves of C-and H-plants, however, was not significantly different. Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPC) initial activity was lower in H-plants, whereas activity of fully activated enzyme was not affected, indicating a decrease in activation state of the enzyme. This was further substantiated by the observed decrease in RuBPCO activase activity in H-compared to C-plants. RuBPCO activase was thus sensitive even to moderate heat stress. The decrease in P N under moderate heat stress was mainly due to a decrease in activation state of RuBPCO catalysed by RuBPCO activase.  相似文献

Investment in reproduction and growth represent a classic tradeoff with implication for life history evolution. The local environment can play a major role in the magnitude and evolutionary consequences of such a tradeoff. Here, we examined the investment in reproductive and vegetative tissue in 40 maternal half‐sib families from four different populations of the herb Plantago coronopus growing in either a dry or wet greenhouse environment. Plants originated from populations with an annual or a perennial life form, with annuals prevailing in drier habitats with greater seasonal variation in both temperature and precipitation. We found that water availability affected the expression of the tradeoff (both phenotypic and genetic) between reproduction and growth, being most accentuated under dry condition. However, populations responded very differently to water treatments. Plants from annual populations showed a similar response to drought condition with little variation among maternal families, suggesting a history of selection favouring genotypes with high allocation to reproduction when water availability is low. Plants from annual populations also expressed the highest level of plasticity. For the perennial populations, one showed a large variation among maternal families in resource allocation and expressed significant negative genetic correlations between reproductive and vegetative biomass under drought. The other perennial population showed less variation in response to treatment and had trait values similar to those of the annuals, although it was significantly less plastic. We stress the importance of considering intraspecific variation in response to environmental change such as drought, as conspecific plants exhibited very different abilities and strategies to respond to high versus low water availability even among geographically close populations.  相似文献

Teopod 2 (Tp2) is a semidominant mutation of maize that prolongs the expression of juvenile vegetative traits, increases the total number of leaves produced by the shoot, and transforms reproductive structures into vegetative ones. Here, we show that Tp2 prolongs the duration of vegetative growth without prolonging the overall duration of shoot growth. Mutant shoots produce leaves at the same rate as wild-type plants and continue to produce leaves after wild-type plants have initiated a tassel. Although Tp2/+ plants initiate a tassel later than their wild-type siblings, this mutant tassel ceases differentiation at the same time as, or shortly before, the primary meristem of a wild-type tassel completes its development. To investigate the relationship between the vegetative and reproductive development of the shoot, Tp2/+ and wild-type plants were exposed to floral inductive short day (SD) treatments at various stages of shoot growth. Tassel initiation in wild-type plants (which normally produced 18 to 19 leaves) was maximally sensitive to SD between plastochrons 15 and 16, whereas tassel branching was maximally sensitive to SD between plastochrons 15 and 18. Tassel initiation and tassel morphology in Tp2/+ plants (which normally produced 21 to 26 leaves) were both maximally sensitive to SD between plastochrons 15 and 18. Thus, the constitutive expression of a juvenile vegetative program in Tp2/+ plants does not significantly delay the reproductive maturation of the shoot.  相似文献

Specific absorption rates (SAR) and specific utilization rates (SUR) of sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphate ions were determined for Melilotus segetalis (Brot.) Ser. (annual sweetclover) grown under both control and salinized conditions (NaCl treatment of CE=15 dS m−1) for a complete life cycle with sequential harvests. The behaviour over time of the SARs and SURs of the mineral elements was in general correlated with relative growth rate (RGR) kinetics, with a parabolic trend during the vegetative phase and a progressive linear decrease during the reproductive stage. Salinity significantly reduced the SARs of K and Mg but did not affect the SARs of Ca and P during the vegetative phase. During the reproductive stage, however, the SARs of K, Ca and P of salt-stressed plants were higher than in control plants. The similar SARs of total cations (TC) found in control and salt-stressed plants may indicate compensatory mechanisms to maintain a constant total cation content. Salt-stressed plants showed lower SURs of K, Ca and P during the vegetative phase, and lower SURs of K and P but a higher SUR of Mg during the reproductive stage. A nutrient imbalance, caused by a lower root efficiency in absorbing K and Mg and a lower leaf efficiency in producing biomass per unit of K, Ca and P, apparently contributed to the salt-induced reduction in growth during the vegetative phase of M. segetalis. The switch to non-reduced, compensated growth during the reproductive phase may have been caused by a higher nutrient demand which increased the root efficiency in absorbing K, Ca and P and the leaf efficiency in utilizing Mg.  相似文献

To better understand the ecological and evolutionary processes that underlie the ability of invasive plants to colonize and spread in a region, basic data on quantitative genetic variation in growth and reproduction of plants from contrasting microsites are desirable. The annual grass Microstegium vimineum is an invasive colonizer of the herbaceous layer in forests of the eastern United States. This greenhouse study utilized seeds collected from maternal plants in a shady forest or sunny edge microsite in central New Jersey, USA, to examine variation in growth trajectories and size-dependent reproduction. Questions addressed were (1) do growth trajectories vary significantly among families and between microsites? and (2) does reproductive mass scale with vegetative size? The trajectory for shoot dry mass over time was significantly related to microsite, due apparently to greater growth over the final 8 weeks of plants from the interior compared to those from the edge. It is suggested that a growth increase late in the season enables plants to maximize reproduction when light conditions improve following canopy leaf senescence. Number of tillers exhibited significant variation among families within microsites, but growth trajectories did not. Positive phenotypic and genetic correlations were detected between reproductive and vegetative mass per tiller; thus selection may favor large tillers to increase seed output, a critical life history trait for an invasive weed.  相似文献

  • Senescence is a puzzling phenomenon. Few convincing studies of senescence in perennial herbaceous plants exist. While ramets are known to senesce, whether senescence of bunchgrasses actually occurs is not clear.
  • In this study, we grew a set of plants of Elymus excelsus, a bunchgrass, to examine plant size, sexual reproduction and bud formation in individual plants in relation to their gradual ageing, in order to determine whether E. excelsus experiences senescence. We collected data in two consecutive years (2009 and 2010) from field samples of plants from 1 to 5 years old. Using regression models, we performed age‐related analyses of growth and reproduction parameters.
  • Our results showed that individual plant size (diameter, individual biomass), total biomass of ramets, number and biomass of reproductive ramets, percentage of ramets that were reproductive, reproductive allocation, over‐wintering buds and juvenile ramets all declined with age. However, vegetative growth (number and biomass of vegetative ramets) did not decrease with age.
  • Those plants that survived, dwindled in size as they aged. However, no plants shifted their resource allocation between growth and reproduction as they aged, so the shift in allocation did not account for the fall in size.
