Proanthocyanidins, also known as condensed tannins, are oligomers or polymers of flavan-3-ol units. In spite of important breakthroughs in our understanding of the biosynthesis of the major building blocks of proanthocyanidins, (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin, important questions still remain to be answered as to the exact nature of the molecular species that undergo polymerization, and the mechanisms of assembly. We review the structures of proanthocyanidins reported over the past 12 years in the context of biosynthesis, and summarize the outstanding questions concerning synthesis of proanthocyanidins from the chemical, biochemical and molecular genetic perspectives.  相似文献

Much of the controversy over DNA evidence is due to the way in which forensic scientific evidence has classically been presented. The orthodox approach is to consider whether two samples match according to a predetermined criterion. If they do, the fact of match is reported along with an estimate of the frequency of the characteristics. This method fails to address the questions raised in court cases, diverts argument into irrelevancies and stultifies research. Presentation of evidence in the form of likelihood ratios, on the other hand, forces the witness to answer the questions the court is interested in and makes apparent lines of research required to increase our understanding.Editor's commentsThe authors reiterate the crucial role of likelihood ratios in presenting forensic evidence, and so continue the crusade mounted by Evett, Buckleton and others.  相似文献

Polar auxin transport controls multiple aspects of plant development including differential growth, embryo and root patterning and vascular tissue differentiation. Identification of proteins involved in this process and availability of new tools enabling `visualization' of auxin and auxin routes in planta largely contributed to the significant progress that has recently been made. New data support classical concepts, but several recent findings are likely to challenge our view on the mechanism of auxin transport. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the polar auxin transport field. It starts with classical models resulting from physiological studies, describes the genetic contributions and discusses the molecular basis of auxin influx and efflux. Finally, selected questions are presented in the context of developmental biology, integrating available data from different fields.  相似文献

The maxilliped venom claw is an intriguing structure in centipedes. We address open questions concerning this structure. The maxillipeds of fossil centipedes from the Carboniferous (about 300 million years old) have been described, but not been depicted previously. Re-investigation demonstrates that they resemble their modern counterparts. A Jurassic geophilomorph centipede (about 150 million years old) was originally described as possessing a rather leg-like maxilliped. Our re-investigation shows that the maxilliped is, in fact, highly specialized as in modern Geophilomorpha. A scenario for the evolution of the centipede maxilliped is presented. It supports one of the two supposed hypotheses of centipede phylogeny, the Pleurostigmophora hypothesis. Although this hypothesis appears now well established, many aspects of character evolution resulting from this phylogeny remain to be told in detail. One such aspect is the special joint of the maxilliped in some species of Cryptops. Cryptops is an in-group of Scolopendromorpha, but its maxilliped joint can resemble that of Lithobiomorpha or even possess a mixture of characters between the both. Detailed investigation of fossils, larger sample sizes of extant species, and developmental data will be necessary to allow further improvements of the reconstruction of the evolutionary history of centipedes.  相似文献

Environmental and socio-economic changes are leading to increased levels of land abandonment worldwide. The assembly of plant communities on old fields has informed much ecological theory, which in turn has facilitated efforts at ecological restoration. The interaction of the cultivation legacy with inherent soil and vegetation characteristics will determine the dynamics of plant community assembly on old fields and indicate the level of effort required to restore historical vegetation states. The abandonment of traditional agricultural lands in some areas will create old fields that require limited or no restoration. Yet intensification of agriculture and rapid environmental change will lead to increasing numbers of old fields that show little recovery towards an historic vegetation state. The restoration of these old fields will pose significant scientific and policy challenges.  相似文献

In a review of work on 10 of the very numerous lakes of the English Lake District — work which involved co-operation between palaeolimnologists from different disciplines and between palaeo- and neolimnologists — the questions asked by the researchers are listed and it is shown which kind of lake has provided constructive answers. Complete and conformable sediment profiles covering the last ca 14 000 years are found in these lakes, but no single profile is optimal for study of the whole period. Knowledge of the pattern of sediment accumulation is necessary before the record in microfossils and changing sediment composition can be interpreted with confidence. The demonstration that the sediment-source material of these open lakes must have been largely allochthonous established the importance of the sediment column as a record of changes through time in the composition and stability of the soils of each catchment. These changes illustrate the influence of:
i.  Climatic changes, from glacial to temperate interstadial followed by renewed glaciation (Younger Dryas) and then by a long temperate (postglacial) state, during which changes in stream run-off and in the pattern of deposition in lakes indicate changes in precipitation and wind-induced turbulence.
ii.  Processes of pedogenesis, determining the composition of sediment-source material.
iii.  Changes in aquatic and terrestrial biota in response to climatic changes interacting with biological processes; the major changes which coincide with changing land use by man over 5000 years, and the more recent changes associated with the dates for human discharges into lakes and the deposition of airborne pollutants.

Potassium (K^+) is an essential macronutrient for all living organisms and large amounts are required for plant growth and development. In many regions of Asia K+-fertilization has been neglected and soils have become K+-depleted. K+- deficiency in the field diminishes not only crop production but also leads to environmental problems due to inefficient usage and leaching of nitrate. Consequences of K^+-deficiency on crop production range from decreased biomass, nutritional quality and taste of the crops to inferior harvest and storage properties, as well as increased susceptibility to disease. Effects of K^+-deficiency on plant physiology include decreased photosynthetic rate, impaired tissue allocation of sugars and amino acids, decreased protein synthesis.  相似文献

The clinical significance of myocardial bridging has been a subject of discussion and controversy since the introduction of coronary arteriography (CAG) in the early 1960s. More recently computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) has made it possible to visualise the overlying muscular bands and appears to have a higher sensitivity for detecting myocardial bridging than CAG. Combining CTCA with invasive techniques such as CAG should make it possible to improve our understanding of the pathophysiology of myocardial bridging and to provide answers to hitherto unresolved questions. This paper critically reviews the outcomes of previous studies and defines remaining questions that should be answered to optimise the management of the presumably fast growing number of patients in whom a diagnosis of myocardial bridging has been made.  相似文献

The central nervous system (CNS) effects of anticholinergic agents have been documented in various patient populations and to varying degrees in case reports, brain-activity surrogates, and computerized cognitive testing. The older patient population with overactive bladder represents a group at increased risk of cognitive impairment and other CNS side effects associated with antimuscarinic agents. The complexity of the effect of anticholinergic agents on CNS function requires an increased level of careful investigation. Studies need to be performed in the at-risk population with multiple, validated tests at clinically prescribed doses in acute and chronic situations. These studies need to take into account the effect of commonly prescribed dosing regimens, with doses selected to represent with equivalent bladder potency. The alterations in the serum levels and parent/metabolite effects contributed by metabolic issues or drug delivery systems require special attention.  相似文献

A recurring question in the study of fish biomechanics and energeticsis the mechanical power required for tail-swimming at the highspeeds seen among aquatic vertebrates. The quest for answershas been driven by conceptual advances in fluid dynamics, startingwith ideas on the boundary layer and drag initiated by Prandtl,and in measurement techniques starting with force balances focussingon drag and thrust. Drag (=thrust) from measurements on physicalmodels, carcasses, kinematics as inputs to hydromechanical models,and physiological power sources vary from less than that expectedfor an equivalent rigid reference to over an order of magnitudegreater. Estimates of drag and thrust using recent advanceslargely made possible by increased computing power have notresolved the discrepancy. Sources of drag and thrust are notseparable in axial undulatory self propulsion, are open to interpretationand Froude efficiency is zero. Wakes are not easily interpreted,especially for thrust evaluation. We suggest the best measuresof swimming performance are velocity and power consumption forwhich 2D inviscid simulations can give realistic predictions.Steady swimming power is several times that required for towingan equivalent flat plate at the same speed.  相似文献
