Over a three-year period, 917 eggs from 27 females were collected from a captive colony of African Village Weaverbirds Ploceus c. cucullatus. A study was made of egg-laying and incubation behaviour, clutch characteristics and egg recognition.
Fifteen yearling females laid their first clutches at a mean age of 348 days after hatching. The mean clutch-size was 2.26 in adults and 1.68 in yearlings. The mean clutch replacement interval was 6.6 days in adults and 7.4 days in yearlings with an absolute minimum of 4 days. Eggs were laid at intervals of from 24 to 26 hours beginning usually 2–3 hours after dawn.
The eggs laid by this species vary in ground colour and pattern of spotting between different females, but egg pigmentation is constant for each individual bird. The results of 322 egg-replacement tests showed that an individual female could recognise her own egg type and would eject from the nest eggs differing markedly from her own. The incidence of rejection was proportional the degree of difference between the eggs. The possible implications for parasitism by the Didric Cuckoo Chrysococcyx cuprius are discussed.  相似文献

A new marine myxosporean species, Ceratomyxa aegyptiaca n. sp. is described from the gall-bladder of Solea aegyptiaca Chabanaud collected from the Ghar El Melh Lagoon in northeastern Tunisia. Mature spores are elongate and crescent-shaped, measuring 8-11?μm in length and 48-58?μm in width. The polar capsules are spherical, 3.2-4?μm in diameter and equal in size. Trophozoites are polysporous and float free in the bile or are attached on the epithelium of the gall-bladder. Morphological data and molecular analysis based on 18S rDNA sequences are provided. The 18S rDNA of C. aegyptiaca is readily distinguishable from that of other myxozoan species, as the genetically most similar myxozoan parasite, C. seriolae Yokoyama & Fukuda, 2001 (AB530265) collected from Seriola quinqueradiata Temminck & Schlegel in Japanese waters, shares with it only 67.5% identical nucleotides over a 1,680-bp long fragment of 18S rDNA.  相似文献

The adaptive function of trophic egg-laying is generally regarded as extended parental investment to the offspring. However, the evolutionary factors promoting trophic egg-laying are still unclear, because the amount of maternal investment per offspring should be ideally equal between smaller offspring with trophic eggs and larger offspring without any additional investment. Several authors have suggested that trophic egg-laying should evolve only when egg size is constrained, but this hypothesis has not been evaluated. We investigated the evolutionary mechanisms of trophic egg-laying by two different approaches. First, we evaluated morphological constraints on egg size in two sibling ladybird species, Harmonia axyridis, which is known to produce trophic eggs, and H. yedoensis. Second, we theoretically predicted the optimal proportion of trophic eggs to total eggs and egg size in relation to environmental heterogeneity, predictability of environmental quality, and investment efficiency of trophic egg consumption. The intra- and interspecific morphological comparisons suggest that morphological constraints on the evolutionary determination of egg size are weak at best in the two ladybird species. Moreover, we theoretically showed that small egg size and trophic egg-laying are favoured in heterogeneous environments when mothers cannot adjust egg size plastically. We also showed that even a small reduction in investment efficiency makes a trophic egg strategy unlikely, despite relatively high environmental predictability. We conclude that trophic egg provisioning may be a flexible maternal adaptation to a highly heterogeneous environment rather than a response to a morphological constraint on egg size.  相似文献

The sea urchin Heliocidaris tuberculata is typical of most echinoids in having a small egg and a feeding larva, while H. erythrogramma has a large egg and modified development through a non-feeding larvae. The carotenoids in the gonads of these two species were investigated from the comparative biochemical points of view. The carotenoid content of the buoyant eggs of H. erythrogramma was approximately 60 times that of the negatively-buoyant eggs of H. tuberculata. With respect to cytoplasmic volume, however, the carotenoid concentration in the eggs of H. tuberculata was approximately twice that in the eggs of H. erythrogramma. In both species β-echinenone was the principal carotenoid found and their carotenoid patterns were similar. It is very interesting from a functional point of view that carotenoid levels per cytoplasmic volume are conserved across most of the species we have examined irrespective of phylogeny and egg size. In light of this result we suggest that carotenoids may play an important role in developing stage in all echinoids including indirect and direct developers.  相似文献

Globally, aquaculture industries involved with commercial culture of kingfish (Seriola spp.) experience outbreaks of monogenean parasites, which can cause heavy stock losses. In Australia and New Zealand, aquaculturists of kingfish Seriola lalandi incur financial losses caused by two monogenean species: Benedenia seriolae and Zeuxapta seriolae which parasitise the skin and gills, respectively. This study provides information on some basic temperature-dependent life-cycle parameters of these problematic monogeneans on S. lalandi. Hatching times and age at maturity were inversely related to water temperature within the range experienced by wild kingfish in New Zealand (13-21 degrees C). Mature B. seriolae in vitro laid on average 37 eggs/day that hatched over approximately 4 days; peak hatching occurred 9, 11 and 22 days post-deposition at temperatures of 21, 17.5 and 13+/-1.0 degrees C, respectively. Z. seriolae in vitro laid on average 246 eggs/day that hatched over 2 days; peak hatching occurred 7, 9 and 15 days post-deposition at these respective temperatures. B. seriolae matured within 20, 25 and 48 days p.i. at 21, 18 and 13 degrees C. Z. seriolae matured within 25, 37 and >52 days p.i. at the same temperatures. This research describes stages in the reproductive development of B. seriolae and Z. seriolae and discusses the inclusion of basic parasitic life-cycle parameters into management strategies designed to maximise treatment efficacy and limit monogenean epizootics in sea-cage kingfish culture.  相似文献

The chronology of post-larval development in S. chrysophrii, a polyopisthocotylean monogenean parasite of the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.), was experimentally studied. It is compared with other species within the Microcotylidae and the Heteraxinidae, including an analysis of the changes in attachment and the growth rate. Gilthead seabreams infected by larvae of S. chrysophrii were killed periodically in order to collect the different developmental stages. Parasite total body length, haptor length, largest clamp width, and total number of clamps were recorded. Specimens of S. chrysophrii in culture conditions at 20°C became gravid after 26-30 days, with 37 pairs of clamps. The S. chrysophrii growth curve appears to be sigmoid with 3 growth periods (slow-fast-slow). The haptor of S. chrysophrii grows linearly with total body length, but the main contribution to total body length growth is that of the non-haptoral body. The relationship between number of clamps and total body length during development can be fitted to an exponential curve for all the reviewed species, i.e.: Microcotyle spinicirrus, Microcotyle donavini, Microcotyle gotoi, Microcotyle sebastis, Microcotyle hiatulae, Polylabroides multispinosus, Bivagina tai, Heteraxinoides xanthophilis, Heteraxine heterocerca, and Zeuxapta seriolae. The sequence of events was common for all of the species compared: terminal lappet is lost when about 15% of clamps were developed; primordia of testes at approximately 30% of clamps developed, and maturity (as first egg appearance) at about 65% of clamps developed.  相似文献

A commercial turtle pond in South Louisiana was studied to identify the mechanism by which turtle hatchlings acquire Salmonella flora. The visceral organs and mature eggs removed from 31 adult gravid female turtles over the course of two egg-laying seasons and from 37 adult females during one winter dormant period were examined bacteriologically for Salmonella. Pond water, egg nest soil, and hatchlings produced by eggs removed from the oviducts and nest soil were also tested. Eighty-eight turtles hatched from eggs removed from the oviducts of 15 turtles at necropsy did not excrete or harbor systemically Salmonella, nor were these pathogens isolated from ovarian tissue or immature eggs. The findings suggest transovarian transmission of these pathogens does not occur frequently. Turtles hatched from eggs retrieved from soil nests 1 to 2 h after deposition harbor and excrete these organisms. This result coupled with the isolation of these pathogens from the cloaca, colon contents, and bursal fluid from 18 females captured in the act of egg laying supports the cloaca to egg and nest soil to egg mode for salmonellae infection in the resultant hatchling. Salmonella arizonae and Salmonella serogroups B, C2, and E1 were isolated from the cloaca, colon contents, pond water, and nest soil, and were excreted by hatchlings produced from eggs removed from the soil nests. These same serogroups were isolated from the colon contents of 19 of 37 females tested during the dormant period, suggesting the salmonellae persist in the pond environment in the adult throughout the year.  相似文献

Blattisocius keegani (Fox) is a predatory mite in the family Ascidae (Acari), noted for potential biological control of Coleopteran stored product pests. Performance of B. keegani on eggs of navel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), was investigated. Mites completed development from egg to adult in 9.2±0.22 days at 25°C and 50-60% relative humidity, and in 6.33±0.29 days at 32.2°C, 30% relative humidity. Mites provisioned with three or five eggs consumed a median of 1.25 to 1.5 eggs, with a maximum of three eggs consumed over 24?h. Regression analyses indicated egg-laying by B. keegani was significantly correlated with the number of A. transitella eggs consumed, and female mites laid an average of 5.82±0.44 eggs over 72?h. Blattisocius keegani, developed on fresh and frozen eggs, laid significantly more eggs when provided with fresh eggs (F3,26=6.16, P=0.0026) and were able to develop on frozen Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs as an alternative host. Mites were equally fecund when fed eggs stored at 0° or -20°C. Provisioning of adult moth bodies in addition to egg prey items increased mite fecundity, although it was demonstrated that B. keegani are phoretic on adult moths as well. The results are the first experimental evidence of B. keegani as a predator of Lepidopteran eggs, as a phoretic species, and of their potential for biological control of navel orangeworm.  相似文献

Degenerative alteration of the reproductive organs of female schistosomes in correlation with the change in egg-laying rate of schistosome pairs in vitro was studied by electron microscopy. The production of normal eggs by adult S. japonicum pairs decreased after 4 days in vitro followed by an increase of abnormal egg laying up to day 8. In S. mansoni, the yield of both normal and abnormal eggs decreased gradually from the start of maintenance in vitro in spite of a much higher pairing rate than in S. japonicum. The vitelline gland of 14-day in vitro-maintained S. japonicum stained with Fast red B, while that of S. mansoni did not. The ovary of both species exhibited regressive features after 14 days of maintenance in vitro. Ultrastructural examination showed that the vitelline cells and oocytes of S. japonicum and S. mansoni had already lost their structural integrity after 2 days in vitro and continued to exhibit signs of structural degeneration throughout the 14-day in vitro maintenance period. The regressive changes in reproductive potential of female S. mansoni maintained in vitro for 4 days could be reversed by surgically implanting the parasites into mouse mesenteric veins.  相似文献

The effect of light color on egg-laying and on egg quality during the first 50 wk of egg production and during a second cycle of 19 wk following molting was examined. Hens were exposed to one of the following six sources of light: blue (B), green (G), red (R), tungsten (T), cool-white (C) fluorescent or simulated-sunlight (V) fluorescent tubes. Light intensity was equalized at photon output. Total egg production per hen was significantly influenced by the color of light with the most eggs being procuced in R light and the fewest in B light. Hens were more sensitive to light color in response to egg production during the second cycle than during the first cycle. Hens in C light produced significantly fewer eggs than those under V light in both laying cycles. Eggs laid under B or G light were consistently larger than those under R light. Egg weights of hens in V light were heavier than those for the C or T light groups. In the first cycle, shell quality was significantly better in G light than in B or R light. Percent of yolk increased and percent of albumen decreased with age during the first cycle in all treatments and the rate of change was directly related to light color (wavelength). In the second cycle, shell quality, percent of shell, yolk and albumen did not change significantly with age in any of the light treatments. It can be concluded that the wavelength of light may influence egg production, egg components and shell quality of the domestic laying hen.  相似文献

Background

The gold standard for diagnosing Schistosoma mansoni infections is the detection of eggs from stool or biopsy specimens. The viability of collected eggs can be tested by the miracidium hatching procedure. Direct detection methods are often limited in patients with light or early infections, whereas serological tests and PCR methods fail to differentiate between an inactive and persistent infection and between schistosomal species. Recently, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) has been introduced as a diagnostic tool in several fields of medicine. In this study we evaluated CLSM for the detection of viable eggs of S. mansoni directly within the gut of infected mice.

Methodology/Principal Findings

The confocal laser scanning microscope used in this study is based on the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II scanning laser system in combination with the Rostock Cornea Module (image modality 1) or a rigid endoscope (image modality 2). Colon sections of five infected mice were examined with image modalities 1 and 2 for schistosomal eggs. Afterwards a biopsy specimen was taken from each colon section and examined by bright-field microscopy. Visualised eggs were counted and classified in terms of viability status.

Conclusions/Significance

We were able to show that CLSM visualises eggs directly within the gut and permits discrimination of schistosomal species and determination of egg viability. Thus, CLSM may be a suitable non-invasive tool for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis in humans.  相似文献

The long-term effects of methoxyfenozide on the longevity and reproductive processes of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), adults were assessed after exposure by ingestion. Methoxyfenozide significantly reduced adult male longevity compared with females by 1.1 and 1.5 d at 75 and 150 mg (AI)/liter, respectively. Fecundity decreased by >60% with both concentrations at 72 and 96 h after treatment, but at 48 h, no significant effect was observed. The carbohydrate, protein, and lipid content in the eggs were determined as representatives of the biochemical effects of methoxyfenozide associated with the disruption of reproductive processes. The content of carbohydrates in the eggs laid 48 h at treatment was similar to that of controls, but it increased by approximately 1.5 and 2-fold in eggs laid after 72 and 96 h, respectively, compared with controls (15 microg per egg). Protein content was reduced approximately 2.5 and approximately 3-fold for each treatment concentration, respectively, compared with the controls (25 and 23 microg per egg for 75 and 150 mg [AI]/liter, respectively) in eggs collected 72 and 96 h after treatment. Lipid content significantly decreased by approximately 1.6-fold in both treatment concentrations in eggs collected at 48 and 96 h after treatment compared with the controls (24 and 21 microg per egg for 48 and 96, respectively), but it was similar to controls (approximately 19 microg per egg) at 72 h (approximately 15 microg per egg) for both concentrations. The biochemical effects of methoxyfenozide on S. exigua egg formation detected in this work are consistent with the reduction in fertility observed, as reported previously.  相似文献

We have studied brown noddies Anous stolidus breeding on Cayo Noroeste in the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge for the past five years (1985–1989). Daily visits during our residence there each year permitted collection of precise data on arrival chronology, egg-laying and incubation patterns, egg morphometries, chick growth rates, food delivered to chicks and breeding success. Over 150 adults are now individually colour-banded, and each annual chick cohort has been uniquely marked. Some features of the breeding biology of Culebran brown noddies were similar to those reported for pairs at Atlantic and Pacific Ocean colonies; these included duration of egg development, mass of newly hatched chicks, chick growth rates and fledging periods. Other features appear unique to Culebra. These include a tightly synchronous arrival (range of first egg dates: 29 April-4 May) and short egg-laying period (about six weeks), a consistently high breeding success each year (average 84% hatching success, 88% chicks fledged from eggs hatched, 0.79 chicks fledged per pair), and an unusually narrow range of food items (two fish species) taken by adults for their own needs and those of chicks. Observations of the direction taken by adults departing the colony suggest a predictable and productive foraging area along a prominent east-west shelf-break located c. 20 km to the north. We conclude that during these five years, brown noddies on Cayo Noroeste were not limited by food during the breeding season.  相似文献

The breeding behaviour of female Brown-headed cowbirds, Molothrus ater , is remarkably distinct from that of females of most other passerine species. Cowbirds are brood parasites that do not build nests, incubate eggs or feed young. Instead, they have an extended egg-laying stage, and deposit eggs in the nests of hosts within large breeding territories that are defended from other female cowbirds. In this communication, we report the changes in plasma levels of circulating hormones and in morphological characteristics that occur in free-living female Brown-headed cowbirds over a breeding season.
Plasma LH in female cowbirds increases at the onset of breeding and remains elevated for approximately eight weeks, at which time levels decline to basal values. This pattern is similar to that of follicle development, and is consistent with the prolific reproductive output by individuals of this species. Circulating E, levels are quite variable and do not demonstrate any discernible pattern, while plasma B is elevated during the egg-laying period and declines subsequently.
Testosterone titre (T) is highest early in the breeding season, when territorial interactions are generally most frequent. T levels decline slowly thereafter, reaching their lowest values at the season's end. Plasma DHT levels are slightly higher than those for T; DHT exhibits little change until late in the breeding season, when it declines. Fat scores are highest prior to egg laying, and fat reserves diminish as the breeding season progresses. In contrast, body weight increases during the reproductive season, probably as a result of developing eggs in the ovary. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that temporal patterns of hormone secretion are correlated with the expression of social systems.  相似文献

观察并分析了1993 ~2011年四川蜂桶寨国家级自然保护区笼养绿尾虹雉的产卵数、受精率和产卵持续天数等3个繁殖参数.结果发现,笼养绿尾虹雉的雌鸟平均产卵数为3.62枚(n=19),平均产卵天数为41.63 d(n=19),平均受精率为14.13% (n=19).与北京笼养种群相关数据比较,其产卵数、产卵持续天数没有显著差异(均P >0.05),但受精率远低于北京种群(P<0.05).  相似文献

We have previously reported a novel thiol compound, 1-methyl-N alpha,N alpha-dimethyl-4-mercaptohistidine, or ovothiol, present at high concentration in the eggs of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus [Turner, E., Klevit, R., Hopkins, P. B., & Shapiro, B. M. (1986) J. Biol. Chem. 261, 13056-13063]. Here we report two related compounds, 1-methyl-N alpha-methyl-4-mercaptohistidine, or ovothiol B, from the scallop Chlamys hastata, and 1-methyl-4-mercaptohistidine, or ovothiol A, from the starfish Evasterias troschelii. These two compounds, as well as the S. purpuratus compound now designated ovothiol C, were isolated from eggs or ovarian tissue by S-carboxymethylation with [3H]iodoacetic acid, ion-exchange chromatography and ion-pairing high-pressure liquid chromatography. The structures of S-(carboxymethyl)ovothiols A and B were determined by 1H NMR, and that of ovothiol A was confirmed by comparison with authentic methylhistidine samples after desulfuration with Raney nickel. In the ovary of each species, the predominant methylation form of ovothiol accounts for at least 80% of the total 4-mercaptohistidine. The ovothiol concentration of the ovary far exceeds that of the testis or somatic tissues. The ovothiol C content of unfertilized S. purpuratus eggs is 1.14 mumol/10(6) eggs, equivalent to approximately 4.3 mM average concentration; the glutathione (GSH + GSSG) content is 0.9 mumol/10(6) eggs. In this species, high ovothiol levels persisted for the first 2 weeks of embryonic development. Ovothiol and glutathione account for virtually all of the trichloroacetic acid soluble-SH groups in the egg; these results are compared to several previous studies.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

子陵栉(鰕)虎鱼(Ctenogobius giurinus)在嘉陵江中游南充段繁殖期在4~6月,产卵时间持续2~3h,每间隔1~2min交尾一次,每次交尾产卵30~50枚,累计产卵可达1000~1600枚.多数时间由雄性亲鱼负责孵卵,当雄性亲鱼出巢摄食时,由雌性亲鱼替代孵卵.成熟卵产出时为球形,卵径0.453~0.644mm,具黏性,呈淡黄色,半透明,油球1~30个,其中大油球1~4个.受精4min后吸水膨胀成椭圆形.根据其胚胎发育过程的形态特征,胚胎发育全程可划分为7个阶段:受精卵胚盘形成阶段、卵裂阶段、囊胚阶段、原肠胚阶段、神经胚形成阶段、器官形成阶段和孵化出膜阶段.在水温22.3~25.7℃的条件下,胚胎发育共需109h52min.出膜前的器官分化程度高,胸鳍原基、鳃板、半规管、鳔、下颌及颌齿在出膜前均已存在,初孵仔鱼全长2.485~2.640mm,体高O.350~O.460 mm,初孵仔鱼至卵黄囊消失需要4d,至油球消失约6d.  相似文献

在实验室条件下(27±0.5℃,12 D:12 L)研究了柳蓝叶甲Plagiodera versicolora的生物学特性。结果表明,幼虫每隔2~3 d蜕皮1次,共蜕皮2次。成虫产卵前期4 d,世代周期17 d。产卵具有一定的周期性,约10 d为1个周期。叶龄对幼虫的生长发育和成虫的产卵行为有极显著的影响。当幼虫以成熟叶为食料时,其生长发育速率明显减慢,各龄期延长,蛹重较轻;成虫以成熟叶或老叶为食料时产卵几乎完全被抑制,而以幼叶为食料时几乎每天均能产卵。此外,柳蓝叶甲产出卵表面化合物对产卵行为有极为显著的影响。卵表面的有机提取物对成虫产卵具有显著的引诱作用;相反,卵表面的水提取物对产卵有一定的驱避作用。  相似文献

Novel egg-laying boards were found to be effective in the biological control of the freshwater fish louse Argulus foliaceus in a 12·9 ha rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss fishery which had a high prevalence and intensity of infection of juvenile parasites in the early spring of 1999. Approximately 228 000 egg clutches were harvested during an extensive 14 week period of egg laying which peaked in June 1999. In contrast, only 1566 clutches were harvested in 2000, when egg laying activity showed a bi-modal distribution, peaking in May and again in July and August. Egg laying activity decreased 145-fold compared to 1999. Argulus foliaceus prevalence and mean intensity also decreased nine-fold and six-fold, respectively. The ratio of female to male A. foliaceus on rainbow trout in consecutive years was 2·9: 1 and 2·1: 1. Estimates of the size of the female A. foliaceus population based on egg-laying activity in 1999 exceeded that derived from measurements of prevalence and intensity of infection, whereas in 2000, this was more in balance. A minimum temperature of 10° C was identified for egg laying, which occurred continuously from May to October in a broadly synchronous manner. This produced almost two generations each year, with juveniles, adults and eggs undergoing anabiosis during winter.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Previous work has shown that ovipositing females of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) avoid seeds already bearing eggs, and thereby reduce competition among their larval progeny within seeds.
2. This study demonstrates that females also detect small differences in egg density, and prefer to oviposit on seeds with a lower-than-average number of eggs. A nearly uniform dispersion of eggs is thus maintained even after all seeds bear several eggs.
3. In addition, variation in egg load influences oviposition rate. Transfer of females from seeds with few eggs to seeds with many eggs inhibits oviposition; the reverse transfer stimulates it.
4. The upper surface of the egg chorion or egg 'cover' remains intact on the seed surface after the larva has entered the seed and continues to deter egg-laying for at least as long as the period required for larval development. 14-day-old egg covers provide as much deterrence as freshly laid eggs.  相似文献
