Abstract. On the Vecht river plain (western Netherlands), small fens, remnants of a large mesotrophic wetland bordering a moraine, of 1 to 5 ha are found in a man-made matrix of lakes and pastures. The regional position of the fens, local position of sampling sites, composition of the vegetation and local hydrological variables were measured. Polders in the river plain produce a complex hydrology obscuring the regional zonation between moraine and river. Water supply and species composition are determined more by a site's regional than local position. High-productivity reedlands are abundant close to the river. Carex paniculata reedlands receive large amounts of river water, which gives their fen water a high K+ concentration. Low-productivity C. diandra fens and litter fens have their optimum closer to the moraine. C. diandra fens are fed mainly by inflowing nutrient-poor ground- or surface water; litter fens receive primarily rainwater. Nutrients in fen water and in peat are lowest in C. diandra and C. lasiocarpa fens, but do not differ significantly between the communities. In both, iron seems to be more important than calcium in reducing phosphate solubility. Iron richness in the C. diandra fens is caused by present inflows of ground- or surface water, while in C. lasiocarpa fens, which succeed the former, iron richness is the result of historical inflows.  相似文献

Asiatic Clams are common in brackish and fresh water in Asia, and they were introduced into North America in 1924 and have now spread throughout the continent. During the last two decades they have been reported in Europe, but the number of species here is uncertain. Populations of Corbicula from France and the Netherlands were analysed morphologically and genetically to quantify the degree of species and/or population differentiation. The morphological and genetic data, based on allozymes and mitochondrial sequences, were in full agreement. They indicate that there are two distinct species, identified as C. fluminalis and C. fluminea, in the two countries. Analyses of the mitochondrial COI gene revealed an unexpected divergent population of Corbicula in the Rhône. All these individuals were morphologically identified as C. fluminea, but had a COI sequence different from the two previous species. This population may, therefore, be a more ancient population, or a distinct species introduced via a different colonization route.  相似文献

Extended abstract Lake Grevelingen is a brackish water lake in the SW Netherlands. The lake has an area of 108 km2, a mean depth of 5.3 m (maximum 48 m), a mean chlorinity of 13 to 16%0 Cl, and a hydraulic residence time of about 8 years. Mass budget studies have shown a consistent seasonal pattern in the phosphorus sediment-water exchange in Lake Grevelingen (Kelderman 1980). From May to August a P mobilization from the sediment takes place, estimated atca. 12.5 mg P · m−2 · day−1. The sediment accumulatesca. 5.5 mg P · m−2 · day−1 during the rest of the year. Temperature may be an important factor in establishing this pattern. Sediment-water exchange was studied by means of laboratory experiments under specified conditions. Sediment cores (30 cm depth, 11 cm diameter) were taken at four stations in the lake, with sediment types varying from medium- to muddy sand (Fig. 1). The cores with overlying water (ca. 21) were placed in the dark at 5 °C in thermostatically controlled water baths. After a week's incubation time the temperature was slowly raised, such that after three weeks eight cores (four sediment types, duplicates) were at 5 °C, eight were at 10 °C, eight at 15 °C and eight at 20 °C. The same procedure was applied to the four control cores, containing lake water.  相似文献

To assess the effects of increased nutrient availability on aquatic oligochaetes in raised bogs, species assemblages were compared within and between fairly pristine raised bogs in Estonia and raised bog remnants in The Netherlands. Within the pristine bog landscape a distinct pattern in the species assemblage is present. In the most nutrient-poor water bodies, in the ombrotrophic raised bog, only the fragmenting, almost never mature, acid-tolerant species Cognettia sphagnetorum is present. In pristine Estonian raised bogs Nais variabilis, Lumbriculus variegatus and sexually reproducing species are limited to more minerotrophic water bodies, which have a higher decomposition rate of dead organic matter and, consequently, higher nutrient availability. With ten species the lagg zone is the most species-rich part of a pristine raised bog landscape. Most of these lagg zone species are not present in Dutch bog remnants as this part of the bog landscape has long been cultivated. Nais variabilis occurs in the Dutch bog remnants much more frequently than in Estonian bogs, whereas the frequency of C. sphagnetorum and L. variegatus is similar between both countries. These three species respond differently to the increased nutrient availability in The Netherlands, which could be linked to differences in their diets. In contrast to pristine bog pools, N. variabilis in Dutch raised bog remnants is present in water bodies not influenced by minerotrophic water. In Dutch raised bog remnants the occurrence of oligochaetes is not limited anymore by nutrient availability, due to the higher atmospheric nitrogen and sulphur loads in The Netherlands. Overall, it can be concluded that the degradation of Dutch raised bogs has resulted in the loss of both the nutrient-poor parts of the landscape and the special lagg conditions.  相似文献

To assess the natural range in habitat parameters of the once common rich-fen bryophyte Scorpidium scorpioides, water chemistry and vegetation were studied in different regions characteristic of its NW-European distribution area: the Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark and Fennoscandia. Scorpidium scorpioides was found in an environment with circumneutral pH. The variation in solute content and composition was large and nutrient (N and P) concentrations ranged from zero to values indicative of more eutrophic conditions. Six different vegetation types with S. scorpioides were distinguished, resembling Caricion davallianae, Caricion curto-nigrae and Hydrocotylo-Baldellion communities. Type of substrate and solute levels were strongly correlated with the first ordination axis (DCA) and nutrient status and geographic position with the second axis. Habitat and vegetation characteristics in Dutch rich-fens with S. scorpioides indicated that mineral status was higher than in Fennoscandia and Ireland; solute-poor habitats with S. scorpioides have disappeared from the Netherlands. Trophic status was higher in the Netherlands than in Fennoscandia, but in some cases lower than in Ireland. Acidification and eutrophication may have played a role in the decrease of the species in the Netherlands. However, the wide ecological ranges suggest that the decrease of S. scorpioides is not a physiological effect of unsuitable environmental conditions per se.  相似文献

A review is presented on the occurrence of macroalgae in dune pools, ditches and moorland pools in The Netherlands, which were studied in the period 1980–1987. There are clear effects of eutrophication on biomass as well as on species composition. A general trend is that under mesotrophic or moderately eutrophic conditions, the filamentous macroalgae form a diversified component of the primary producers in shallow water bodies. Especially spore forming genera asSpirogyra andOedogonium can be represented with up to about 20 species per site. In hardwater ditches alsoVaucheria is an important component, especially the sediment dwellingVaucheria dichotoma. Under distinctly eutrophic conditions dense floating algal masses contain only one or a few species asCladophora glomerata, Enteromorpha intestinalis, Hydrodictyon reticulatum. Under hypertrophic conditions the water surface is covered by dense blanketing mats of duckweeds in summer and autumn. Besides trophic factors, other factors as alkalinity and chloride concentration play a role in species composition. The results are discussed in the framework of water quality assessment of polder waters and possible applications for water purification or use as manuring substance. The need for experimental ecophysiological studies is underlined.  相似文献

The present distribution of the invasive brown alga Sargassum muticum in the southwest Netherlands is updated. Populations of the alga were found to remain at their 1985 level in Lake Grevelingen, with a small eastward expansion into the Eastern Scheldt estuary. A new population for the brackish, non-tidal Lake Veere is reported. Within Lake Grevelingen S. muticum forms a persistent, extensive canopy of 100% cover (4,442.5 ± 525.6 g fresh wt m–2, 640.3 ± 75.8 g dry wt m–2) that has a marked effect upon the penetration of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (reduced by 97% at 0.1 m). Surface sea water temperatures can be elevated by 2.7 °C above water not associated with a Sargassum canopy; furthermore, the dense canopy shades and hence reduces water temperatures below 0.1 m depth. Productivity studies indicate that assimilation occurs in the upper levels of the canopy (57.09 µg C mg dry wt–1 m–2 at a mean PAR rate of 106.7 J cm–2 h–1). Self-shading and a resultant decrease in the rate of assimilation was evident below the canopy.  相似文献

The box tree moth, Cydalima perspectalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a native pest of box trees (Buxus spp.) in Asia, was first detected in Germany and the Netherlands in 2007 and has since rapidly spread throughout Europe causing severe damage to ornamental and native box trees. To date, sustainable control strategies for C. perspectalis in Europe are lacking, primarily owing to the inadequate information regarding the biology and the ecology of this recent invader. Several studies conducted in Asia, however, may provide important information for the development of management strategies against C. perspectalis, which are urgently needed to preserve the natural box tree forests in Europe. The current literatures on the biological characteristics, host plants, phenology, distribution and control options of the box tree moth in Asia are reviewed, preliminary data on the parasitism of C. perspectalis in Europe are provided, and options for sustainable long‐term solutions for the management of the invasive pest in Europe are discussed.  相似文献

In the evaluation of the role of lake restoration programmesin situ measurements of the filtration rate of the freshwater musselDreissena polymorpha have been performed in Lake Wolderwijd, The Netherlands. The filtration rate mainly depends on the suspended matter content of the water, and shows an inverse exponential relationship with this factor. The filtration activity is temperature indifferent between approx. 5 and 20 °C. At low temperatures the filtration rate drops abruptly, at high temperatures gradual inhibition occurs. The filtration rate shows a sigmoidal relation with the length of the mussel. The largestD. polymorpha have a diminished filtration rate compared to animals of smaller size. This might be a degenerative feature of the oldest mussels. In Lake Wolderwijd a population density of 675 per m2 is required to compensate phytoplankton growth by grazing. Manipulation of the size of the population can be executed by adding suitable substrates for the mussel.  相似文献

On the basis of distribution maps showing the first pollen occurrences in the Holocene of the well-known climate indicators Hedera, Ilex and Viscum as well as data for Corylus, a series of maps have been prepared that show summer and winter isotherms at various time intervals during the Holocene. From these maps climate curves for Amsterdam, the Netherlands have been set out. These were compared with curves for the Eemian at the same site. In both of these warm periods there is evidence for increased seasonality in the early phases which were relatively continental. Changes in insolation could account for such differences. Summer optima occurred earlier than winter optima. Changes in land-sea distribution are important, especially with regard to the patterns in winter climate. During the latter half of the Eemian, the climate was distinctly more oceanic than in the Holocene. Early in the Holocene, an influx of warm ocean water resulted in higher winter temperatures in the Gulf of Biscay, the Irish Sea, and areas east of Skagerrak-Kattegat. Temperature decline after the climatic optimum was greatest in the north, i.e. at 60°N, where a depression in the order of 2°C in summer and 2–3°C in winter occurred. Temperature decline was less farther south, i.e. at ca. 50°N, where a distinct west-east gradient in temperature change can be observed.  相似文献

The increasing demand for food production and predicted climate change scenarios highlight the need for improvements in crop sustainability. The efficient use of water will become increasingly important for rain‐fed agricultural crops even in fertile regions that have historically received ample precipitation. Improvements in water‐use efficiency in Zea mays have been limited, and warrant a renewed effort aided by molecular breeding approaches. Progress has been constrained by the difficulty of measuring water‐use in a field environment. The stable carbon isotope composition (δ13C) of the leaf has been proposed as an integrated signature of carbon fixation with a link to stomatal conductance. However, additional factors affecting leaf δ13C exist, and a limited number of studies have explored this trait in Z. mays. Here we present an extensive characterization of leaf δ13C in Z. mays. Significant variation in leaf δ13C exists across diverse lines of Z. mays, which we show to be heritable across several environments. Furthermore, we examine temporal and spatial variation in leaf δ13C to determine the optimum sampling time to maximize the use of leaf δ13C as a trait. Finally, our results demonstrate the relationship between transpiration and leaf δ13C in the field and the greenhouse. Decreasing transpiration and soil moisture are associated with decreasing leaf δ13C. Taken together these results outline a strategy for using leaf δ13C and reveal its usefulness as a measure of transpiration efficiency under well‐watered conditions rather than a predictor of performance under drought.  相似文献

Species-rich plant communities characteristic for succession from mesotrophic open water to fen are very rare in The Netherlands. These vegetation types used to occur in turf ponds in the low lying peatland area, created by peat dredging and filled with water due to seepage of mesotrophic, well-buffered groundwater. One of the goals of the National Nature Policy Plan is to create new opportunities for the initial terrestrialization communities through ecological engineering, e.g., restoration and creation of open water habitats. Restoration of the abiotic conditions in acidified floating fen communities is only possible by a combined measure of removal of the Sphagnum-layer and superficial drainage of surplus rain water. New turfponds have been excavated. This study showed that the abiotic conditions (i.e., water depth and water chemistry) are favorable for the development of aquatic communities characteristic of mesotrophic conditions. The aquatic plant species found in the new ponds also point in this direction, e.g., Chara major and Ch. delicatula are very abundant as are seven Potamogeton species. It is concluded that a constant discharge of groundwater and a good connectivity between the ponds and the existing remnants of plant communities desired in the area are essential for the conservation and development of these species-rich plant communities.  相似文献

The past and present occurrence of Elatine hydropiper L. (eight-stamened waterwort), E. hexandra (Lapierre) DC. (six-stamened waterwort) and E. triandra Schkuhr (three-stamened waterwort) in the Netherlands is discussed. It has proved possible to distinguish the slightly curved seeds of E. hexandra and E. triandra in subfossil material on morphological grounds. E. hexandra is the most common species at present, but subfossil finds are confined to Late-glacial and Pre-boreal sediments of one lake in the Pleistocene area of the Netherlands. Living plants of E. triandra have only been found in the Netherlands in 1838–1839, but there are 17 records from five archaeological sites, all located in the western Dutch estuarine area. Several of these sites also yielded E. hydropiper, archaeobotanically the most common species. The occurrence of E. triandra and E. hydropiper in the Netherlands seems to have been favoured by high summer temperatures. The ecological amplitude of this combination of species gives firm clues for the reconstruction of the environment, which must have been a freshwater tidal area. Since this type of environment is strongly threatened on a worldwide scale, the presence of these species in the past may also provide interesting information for present nature development projects in the Dutch estuarine area.  相似文献

The effects of contaminated river water on the filtration rate of zebra mussels from a clean reference site were studied. After a 48-h exposure period to filtered water from the rivers Rhine, Meuse and Amstel (The Netherlands), the filtration rate was measured. It was demonstrated that water from contaminated locations inhibited the filtration rate. Inhibition was higher during low water levels in the rivers Rhine and Meuse than during high water levels, suggesting that contaminants are diluted during high water levels. It is concluded that the shortterm filtration assay with D. polymorpha can be used for assessing water quality.  相似文献

Water movement has a strong impact on the development and persistence of helophyte stands along large water bodies. The decline ofScirpus andPhragmites stands in the Rhine-Meuse estuary (The Netherlands), due to changed hydrodynamic conditions (reduced tidal action, increased shoreline erosion), illustrates the effects of large-scale hydrological regulation. Hydrodynamic factors partly explain the distribution and composition of helophyte vegetation bordering the open water. A vertical zonation emerges during the stages of dispersal, germination, seedling establishment and adult growth of the plants. Differences between species may result in the occupation of different water-depth zones. Additionally, gradients of wave exposure result in a horizontal zonation along water bodies. Restrictions to helophyte development due to the hydrological regime and wave attack should be taken into account in wetland restoration studies. Water-level management, instead of a strict control of water levels, should be one of the key elements of water management in the future.  相似文献

During the northern Europe epidemic of bluetongue (BT), Onderstepoort‐type blacklight traps were used to capture Culicoides Latreille (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) biting midges weekly between November 2006 and December 2008 on 21 livestock farms in the Netherlands. Proven and potential vectors for the bluetongue virus (BTV) comprised almost 80% of the midges collected: the Obsoletus complex, constituting C. obsoletus (Meigen) and C. scoticus Downes & Kettle (44.2%), C. dewulfi Goetghebuer (16.4%), C. chiopterus (Meigen) (16.3%) and C. pulicaris (Linnaeus) (0.1%). Half of the 24 commonest species of Culicoides captured completed only one (univoltine) or two (bivoltine) generations annually, whereas multivoltine species (including all BTV vectors) cycled through five to six generations (exceeding the one to four generations calculated in earlier decades). Whether this increment signals a change in the phenology of northern Europe Culicoides or simply is an adaptive response that manifests during warmer episodes, thus heightening periodically the incursive potential of midge‐borne arboviruses, remains to be clarified. Culicoides duddingstoni Kettle & Lawson, C. grisescens Edwards, C. maritimus Kieffer, C. pallidicornis Kieffer and C. riethi Kieffer are new records for the biting midge fauna of the Netherlands. It is suggested that C. punctatus (Meigen) be added to the European list of vector Culicoides.  相似文献

In the eastern part of the Naardermeer peatlands (the Netherlands) a regional calcium-rich groundwater flow discharges (here often called the seepage area), whereas in the western part infiltration takes place. The ecological consequence of this hydrological pattern is reflected by the pattern in reedland communities. In the seepage area, which is characterized by Thelypteris-reedlands including many rare and endangered species (Caricion davallianae, Calthion palustris), there is a complex gradient of water types. The lime potential in the peat soil is clearly influenced by the hydrological gradient. In the ombrotrophic (poor fen) part of the gradient (containing species of Caricion curto-nigrae) the lime potentials are low and the groundwater contains low amounts of dissolved ions. The rare and endangered species (Caricion davallianae) are restricted to a small area with high lime potentials which is nourished by regional calcium-rich groundwater. High lime potentials were also measured in eutrophic reedlands influenced by brackish groundwater. Several species which generally occur in wet meadows even show a preference for this brackish environment.In a part of the seepage area succession from rich fen to poor fen and Alnus wood has taken place over a period of 40 years. This development has been caused by the diminishing amount of fresh seepage due to a lowering of the water levels in the surrounding area.The characteristics of poikilotrophic zones (contact zones between water flows) are discussed in relation to their significance for the preservation of endangered marsh species.Abbreviations EC25= Electrical conductivity measured at 25 °C  相似文献

Cyprideis torosa (Jones , 1850) is a very common brackish water ostracod of the German coasts, but, despite empty valves are found occasionally in surface sediments of some modern inland waters, C. torosa could not be found living in modern athalassic waters of Germany so far. During interglacial periods, including the Holocene, however, fossils of this species are quite common in Central Germany, at a distance of more than 300 km away from the coasts of the Baltic and North Seas. All 31 Quaternary localities with C. torosa known so far from Germany are documented. C. torosa is an indicator for brackish waters and widely used as index‐fossil in palaeosalinity reconstructions relying on water chemistry bound morphological changes (nodes, sieve‐pores). The comparisons imply a general underestimation of palaeosalinity in oligo‐ to mesohaline athalassic waters if using nodes and sieve‐pores of C. torosa as proxy. A water chemistry (ionic composition) driven morphological response is assumed instead one by salinity only. Palaeosalinity estimations for athalassic waters, relying on morphological variability alone, should therefore be used with caution. Palaeosalinity trends, however, can be detected. Distinguishing thalassic and athalassic sediments with C. torosa is possible by using the associated ostracod fauna as a discriminator. Regarding the ecology and distribution of C. torosa, permanent, brackish, and shallow water bodies under relatively warm conditions are required for its settlement. The source of the salt are brines originating from Zechsteinian or Triassic underground evaporites. Warm and relatively dry climates could enhance the process for such water bodies of becoming salty, a situation present in Holocene Central Germany. The occurrence of C. torosa can therefore be used for palaeoclimatological studies. The most probable migration path of this ostracod species to athalassic waters is by avian transport. Adult water beetles were collected from 841 localities in the Netherlands. The distribution maps of the three species of the genus Helochares (Coleoptera; Hydrophilidae) in the Netherlands are given. They are based on specimens from museum collections and this investigation. H. lividus occurs all over the Netherlands, except for the north-east. This northern limit of its European distribution area coincides with the 8.5°C isotherm for the mean year temperature. H. obscurus is limited in its distribution to clay and peat-bog, but in the sandy coastal dune area H. obscurus replaces H. punctatus. H. punctatus is limited in its distribution to soils consisting of peat-moor or sand, but it is absent from the coastal dune area.Co-existence of H. lividus with either H. obscurus or H. punctatus occurs regularly. Co-existence of H. obscurus and H. punctatus has been observed only once, these species exclude each other by different ecological requirements. H. lividus and H. obscurus show two optima in abundance during the year which corresponds with a univoltine life-cycle. H. punctatus shows no clear maximum in abundance. However, on the basis of the presence of females carrying egg-cases and the presence of teneral adults a univoltine life-cycle for all three Helochares spp. can be deduced. A small proportion of the beetles hibernates either as larva or as pupa and emerges in spring.The distribution of Helochares spp. has been related to some environmental variables using the Index of Representation. H. lividus has a clear preference for waters with a high pH, high conductivity and high chlorinity with a luxurious vegetation of floating leaved and submerged plants on mineral soils. Occasionally running waters or waters with a low current velocity are preferred. Preferred habitats are regulated lowland streams, clay- and sand-ditches, and clay- and sand-canals. H. obscurus has a clear preference for stagnant waters with a high pH, high conductivity and high chlorinity (but the optimum is lower than for H. lividus) with a luxurious vegetation of floating leaved and submerged plants. Preferred habitats are clay- and sand-ditches. H. punctatus has a very clear preference for waters with a low pH, low conductivity and low chlorinity. With respect to vegetation and type of current the species shows no significant preferences or aversions. Preferred habitats are moorland pools, peat-canals and peat-cuttings.  相似文献
