Freshwater and marine snails serve as intermediate hosts fornumerous species of larval trematodes. Any particular populationof snails may be infected by several species. It is commonlyobserved that mixed species infections are less frequent thanexpected by change in collections of host snails from naturalpopulations. While several mechanisms might generate such negativeassociations, laboratory studies of freshwater snail-trematodeassociations have demonstrated the presence of strong antagonisticinteractions between intramolluscan larval stages (rediae andsporocysts) of species that infect the same host individual. Both predatory and non-predatory antagonism has been observed, the former taking the form of predation by large, dominant redialforms on the sporocysts and rediae of subordinate species. Theseinteractions are largely hierarchical, although in some systemspriority effects have been observed, and in one case a sporocystspecies replaced a redial species by strong non-predatory antagonism.Several instances of positive association between larval trematodespecies have also been observed. In such cases, interferencewith host defense mechanisms by the first parasite appears toenhance superinfection by the second. My own study of the larvaltrematode guild that infects the salt marsh snail, Cerithideacalifornica, has revealed patterns of association and interactionthat are very similar to those demonstrated by laboratory studiesof freshwater systems. Ultimately, the frequency of interactionsamong larval trematodes depends on the availability, relativeto the numbers of susceptible snails, of infective eggs andmiracidial larvae transmitted from definitive hosts.  相似文献

Aim To use a comparative approach to understand parasite demographic patterns in native versus introduced populations, evaluating the potential roles of host invasion history and parasite life history. Location North American east and west coasts with a focus on San Francisco Bay (SFB). Methods Species richness and prevalence of trematode parasites were examined in the native and introduced ranges of two gastropod host species, Ilyanassa obsoleta and Littorina saxatilis. We divided the native range into the putative source area for introduction and areas to the north and south; we also sampled the overlapping introduced range in SFB. We dissected 14,781 snails from 103 populations and recorded the prevalence and identity of trematode parasites. We compared trematode species richness and prevalence across the hosts’ introduced and native ranges, and evaluated the influence of host availability on observed patterns. Results Relative to the native range, both I. obsoleta and L. saxatilis have escaped (lost) parasites in SFB, and L. saxatilis demonstrated a greater reduction of trematode diversity and infection prevalence than I. obsoleta. This was not due to sampling inequalities between the hosts. Instead, rarefaction curves suggested complete capture of trematode species in native source and SFB subregions, except for L. saxatilis in SFB, where infection was extremely rare. For I. obsoleta, infection prevalence of trematodes using fish definitive hosts was significantly lower in SFB compared to the native range, unlike those using bird hosts. Host availability partly explained the presence of introduced trematodes in SFB. Main conclusions Differential losses of parasite richness and prevalence for the two gastropod host species in their introduced range is probably the result of several mechanistic factors: time since introduction, propagule pressure, vector of introduction, and host availability. Moreover, the recent occurrence of L. saxatilis’ invasion and its active introduction vector suggest that its parasite diversity and distribution will probably increase over time. Our study suggests that host invasion history and parasite life history play key roles in the extent and diversity of trematodes transferred to introduced populations. Our results also provide vital information for understanding community‐level influences of parasite introductions, as well as for disease ecology in general.  相似文献

Cryptic species are increasingly recognized as commonplace amongmarine gastropods, especially in taxa such as shell-less opisthobranchsthat lack many discrete taxonomic characters. Most cases ofpoecilogony, the presence of variable larval development withina single species, have historically turned out to representcryptic species, with each possessing a single canalized typeof development. One well-characterized example of poecilogonywas attributed to the sacoglossan opisthobranch Alderia modesta;in southern California, slugs resembling this member of a monotypicgenus produce both long-lived, planktotrophic and short-lived,lecithotrophic larvae. Paradoxically, however, A. modesta isexclusively planktotrophic everywhere else in the northern Pacificand Atlantic Oceans. A recently completed molecular study foundthat slugs from poecilogonous populations south of Bodega Harbor,California, comprise an evolutionarily distinct lineage separatefrom northern, strictly planktotrophic slugs. We now describethe southern species as A. willowi n. sp., based on differencesin morphology of the dorsum and radula, characteristics of theegg mass, larval development mode and nuclear and mitochondrialgenetic markers. A DNA barcode is provided, based on 27 fixeddifferences in the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene thatcan reliably differentiate Pacific specimens of Alderia species.Genetic and morphological data are concordant with developmentalevidence, confirming that A. willowi is a true case of poecilogony. An improved understanding of the ecological differences betweenthese sister taxa may shed light on the selective pressuresthat drove the evolution of lecithotrophy in the southern species. We examined the utility of fluorescent fatty acid analog dyes for labeling larval trematodes to use in experimental infections. Our goals were to identify two dyes that label larval trematodes belonging to the species Maritrema novaezealandensis and Coitocaecum parvum, determine if the dyes influence survival and infectivity of larval trematodes and/or host mortality, and if larval trematodes labeled with alternative dyes could be distinguished post-infection. The two dyes tested, BODIPY FL C12 and BODIPY 558/568 C12, successfully labeled all treated larval trematodes, did not influence cercariae survival or infectivity, and did not influence host mortality in either host-parasite system. All larval parasites were fluorescent and distinguishable after 5 days in amphipod intermediate hosts. In addition, larval Acanthoparyphium sp. were strongly fluorescent with both dyes after 5 weeks within cockle hosts. This method should be extremely useful for experimental studies using trematode-host systems as models for addressing a range of ecological and evolutionary questions.  相似文献

Two aspects of metabolic adaptation to increased terrestrialismare considered: (1) respiratory adaptations as reflected bycomparative cytochrome c oxidase activity in tissues of crabsfrom aquatic and terrestrial habitats, and (2) thermal acclimationpatterns in cytochrome c oxidase activity in tissues from thesecrabs. Enzymatic assays were done spectrophotometrically ongill, muscle, and mid-gut gland tissues from two aquatic species,Libinia emarginata and Callinectes sapidus, and the terrestrialOcypode quadrata. Cytochrome c oxidase was chosen for this studysince it is generally believed that the more aerobic the cellsor tissues become, the more fully developed the cytochrome systemwill be. This enzyme is also thought to have a role in thermalacclimation. In gill tissue the activity of cytochrome c oxidase is enhancedwith the advent of aerial respiration. Enzymatic activity ofgill tissue from Ocypode quadrata was significantly greaterthan it was in tissue from the aquatic species. No correlationwas observed with increased terrestrialism and enzymatic activityof muscle or mid-gut gland tissue. The thermal acclimation patternsof tissues of these three species of crabs indicate a clear-cuttendency for less enzymatic adaptation to temperature at thetissue level as these crabs evolve toward a land habitat.  相似文献

Densities of a deposit-feeding gastropod, Ilyanassa obsoleta(Say) and a suspension-feeding bivalve, Mercenaria mercenaria (L.), were manipulated to test the importance of interactions between adults and settling larvae in affecting abundance patterns of infaunal invertebrates. Abundance of postlarvae and juveniles was significantly lower in the presence of Ilyanassa obsoleta than in snail-free controls. I. obsoleta caused a reduction in abundance of as much as 45%. Surface-dwelling tubiculous polychaetes, gastropods, harpacticoid copepods, and mobile subsurface-dwelling infauna all declined in abundance with increasing I. obsoleta density. Mercenaria mercenaria had little or no effect upon larval settlement. The effect of Ilyanassa obsoleta and Mercenaria mercenaria combined was equivalent to the sum of the effects of each species separately. Disturbance and ingestion of newly settled larvae by Ilyanassa obsoleta, larval settlement selectivity, and disturbance-induced emigration are probable mechanisms causing differences in abundance between I. obsoleta treatments.  相似文献

Leaf beetles in the genus Phratora differ in host plant use and in the chemical composition of their larval defensive secretion. Most species specialize on either poplars or willows (family Salicaceae), but two species feed on birch (family Betulaceae). Phratora vitellinae utilizes salicylates from the host plant to produce its larval secretion, which contains salicylaldehyde, while other Phratora species produce an autogenous secretion. To reconstruct the evolutionary history of host plant use and the larval secretion chemistry in this genus, we sequenced 1383 base pairs of the mt cytochrome oxidase I gene for six European and one North American Phratora species and three outgroup taxa. Bootstrap values of the complete nucleotide sequence were 99-100% for six of eight nodes in the maximum parsimony tree. They were 71% and 77% for the two other nodes. The maximum parsimony tree and the maximum likelihood tree based on nucleotide sequence showed the same relationships as a maximum parsimony tree based on the amino acid sequence. Beetle phylogeny overlapped broadly with host plant taxonomy and chemistry, and it revealed historical constraints influencing host plant use. However, there was one host shift from the willow family (Salicaceae) to the birch family (Betulaceae). The use of host plant phenol glycosides for the larval defensive secretion evolved along the lineage that led to P. vitellinae. Phratora vitellinae feeds on the taxonomically widest range of host plants, which are characterized by moderate to high levels of salicylates. The results support the hypothesis that the use of salicylates for the larval secretion evolved twice independently in chrysomeline leaf beetles.  相似文献

Complexes of cryptic species are rapidly being discovered in many parasite taxa, including trematodes. However, after they are found, cryptic species are rarely distinguished from each other with respect to key ecological or life history traits. In this study, we applied an integrative taxonomic approach to the discovery of cryptic species within Stegodexamene anguillae, a facultatively progenetic trematode common throughout New Zealand. The presence of cryptic species was determined by the genetic divergence found in the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene, the 16S rRNA gene and the nuclear 28S gene, warranting recognition of two distinct species and indicating a possible third species. Speciation was not associated with geographic distribution or microhabitat within the second intermediate host; however frequency of the progenetic reproductive strategy (and the truncated life cycle associated with it) was significantly greater in one of the lineages. Therefore, two lines of evidence, molecular and ecological, support the distinction between these two species and suggest scenarios for their divergence.  相似文献

Cryptic species of the digeneans, Cercaria batillariae (Heterophyidae) and an undescribed philophthalmid, were detected using polymerase chain reaction-based restriction fragment-length polymorphism methodology and sequence analyses. These digeneans were all collected from the same species of gastropod first intermediate host, Batillaria cumingi (=Batillaria attramentaria). The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 gene (approximately 800bp) and nuclear internal transcribed spacer 1 gene (approximately 400bp) were used for species level discrimination. Restriction fragment-length polymorphism analyses of cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 gene showed that C. batillariae included 10 distinguishable fragment patterns, and the philophthalmid included five patterns. On the basis of subsequent sequence analyses, the restriction fragment length polymorphism patterns of C. batillariae were grouped into eight phylogenetically distinct lineages and those of the philophthalmid into three phylogenetically distinct lineages. There was no evidence of gene flow among the different lineages due to the lack of heterozygosity within the observed internal transcribed spacer 1 gene fragment patterns. This suggests that all of these lineages are different species. Most of these species were widespread, but some exhibited restricted geographic distributions. We discuss the implications of these findings for host specificity of these trematodes. These results demonstrate the utility of genetic analysis to distinguish species of morphologically similar trematodes. Hence, trematode species diversity may often be underestimated when species identifications are limited to morphological features.  相似文献

The structure of gastropod communities was examined from January to June 1999 in four sites of the streams of Mont Saint-Michel Bay along a gradient of salinity, and the occurrence of larval trematodes infecting snails was studied. Abundance and species richness of gastropods increased from polyhaline (95 snails, 1 species) to oligohaline waters (6672 snails, 6 species). Whatever the salinity, the most abundant species was Potamopyrgus antipodarum, an invasive non-indigenous species that represented 80% of the gastropods. Only one male was found in P. antipodarum populations suggesting a predominantly parthenogenetic mode of reproduction. Among 7218 gastropods collected, 1.2% were infected by larval trematodes: 5 species in Lymnaea peregra (4.4%), 4 species in Planorbis planorbis (12.0%), one echinostome in Physa acuta (0.2%), and a new species of Sanguinicola in P. antipodarum (0.5%). This is the first record of infected P. antipodarum in Europe. No parasites were found in polyhaline waters. The prevalence per host population varied from 0 to 100% depending on time of collection, salinity and host species. In the lowest-salinity site, abundance of gastropods and prevalence of trematodes were negatively correlated. The dominance of P. antipodarum in the gastropod communities is discussed in relation with euryhalinity, parthenogenesis and weak rate of parasitism.  相似文献

The prevalence of parasitic infection by larval digenetic trematodes in natural populations of the mud snail, Cerithidea californica Haldeman, was found to increase with snail length; all snails ≥ 33 mm were infected. Distributions of infections by the seven most common larval trematodes were heterogeneous due to two species being more common than expected in the smaller size classes of snails, two being more common than expected in the larger size-classes of snails and three species being most prevalent in snails of intermediate length. The relative abundances of trematodes in different size-classes reflected these distributional patterns.A mark-recapture field study of snail growth rates failed to demonstrate that parasitic infection causes gigantism in Cerithidea. Parasitism tended to stunt the growth of juvenile snails and to a lesser degree, that of adult snails. The effects of trematodes on snail growth was shown to be species specific. This finding contrasts with those of earlier studies in which gigantic growth was observed in infected snails. This discrepancy is attributed to differences in the life histories of the host snails. It is predicted that gigantism will occur commonly in short-lived or semelparous species of snails but rarely, if ever, in long-lived iteroparous species which are predominately marine.  相似文献

Results of histochemical tests for cytochrome oxidase activityin four species of Rauwolfia have been reported. The cells beneaththe terminal shoot meristem constitute the pith. Histochemicaltests showed intensified enzymatic activity in those cells ofthe pith which would differentiate as sclereid initials. Similarcytochrome oxidase activity also occurred in the sclereid initialsand the developing sclereids. The cytochrome oxidase activitywas associated with two types of particulate formation, thegranular and rod-shaped. The ground parenchymatous cells ofthe pith and the leaf-base showed very little enzymatic activityof cytochrome oxidase. The characteristic indophenol blue colorationdue to cytochrome oxidase activity did not appear in controlsections. Physiological changes correlated with morphogeneticexpression of some pith cells demonstrate that the physiologicalchanges occur before the initiation of sclereids in the morphologicallyhomogeneous parenchymatous cells of the pith. Intensified cytochromeoxidase activity was also recorded in the meristematic tissuesof shoot apex, procambium, axillary buds and the laticiferouscells of Rauwolfia.  相似文献

Respiratory activities, cytochrome composition and cytochromec oxidase (EC 1.9.3.1 [EC] ) subunit II (COXII) levels of isolatedmitochondria in one euplasmic and four alloplasmic lines ofwheat (Triticum aestivum), having cytoplasms of Aegilops columnaris,Ae.crassa (4x),Ae. mutica and Ae. triuncialis, which show variousgrowth abnormalities, were studied. Cytoplasm-specific variationon the respiratory activities has been revealed among the cytoplasmsof five Triticum and Aegilops species. The cyanide-resistantrespiratory pathway does not seem to contribute to the variationin activity. The low level of state 3 and cytochrome oxidaseactivities were evident in lines having Ae. columnaris and Ae.triuncialis cytoplasms, which also show growth inhibition. Thelow cytochrome oxidase activity in both cytoplasms is consistentwith the low amount of cytochrome aa3 and the severe reductionin COXII levels. The relatively low amount of cytochrome aa3in Ae. mutica is also consistent with the reduced level of theCOXII. On the other hand, relatively low amounts of cytochromeb (b-557) are found in the Ae. crassa cytoplasmic line. Theseresults suggest that the growth abnormalities found in the alloplasmicwheat lines are related to the variation in respiratory activitiesand cytochrome composition. In particular, growth inhibitionfound in the alloplasmic wheats having Ae. columnaris and Ae.triuncialis may be caused by the severe depression of respiratoryactivity due to the impaired cytochrome oxidase activity oftheir mitochondria. 3Present address: Department of Biochemistry, Dalhousie University,Halifax, NS, Canada B3H 4H7  相似文献

Eleven species of larval digeneans are reported for the firsttime in the UK from the freshwater snail Lymnaea (Radix) auricularia. The latter replaced its congener L. peregra in a gravel pitnear Wraysbury, Berkshire in the Lower Thames Valley and hostedan assemblage of larval digeneans similar to that previouslytransmitted by L peregra. The larval digeneans of L. peregrain small bodies of water in the area were also similar to thosefound in L. auriculania in the gravel pit. This replacementin the role of the host is explained on the basis of morphological, physiological and ecological similarities of the two lymnaeidspecies. Purified chromatophore membranes and spheroplast membrane vesicleswere prepared from Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides by the methodof Michels and Konings (1978). The cytochrome c oxidase activityof the spheroplast membrane vesicles was about 15-fold higheron a bacteriochlorophyll basis than that of the chromatophoremembranes. The cytochrome c oxidase activity of the chromatophoremembranes was greatly stimulated (about 10-fold) by an additionof Triton X-100 (0.1%), but there was less stimulated (about1.5-fold) in the case of spheroplasts. The pH optimum of theoxidase activities of the spheroplast membrane vesicles andof chromatophore membranes treated with 0.1% Triton X-100, andthe salt dependencies of the activity of both preparations werethe same. These results show that the membrane-bound b-type cytochromeoxidase of this bacterium accepts electrons from ferrocytochromec on the periplasmic side of the membrane (on the outer surfaceof the spheroplast membrane vesicles). These results also areconsistent with the fact that cytochrome c2 is located in theperiplasmic space in this bacterium. (Received January 24, 1984; Accepted April 24, 1984)  相似文献

Nitric oxide (NO) is an intercellular signaling molecule; among its many and varied roles are the control of blood flow and blood pressure via activation of the heme enzyme, soluble guanylate cyclase. A growing body of evidence suggests that an additional target for NO is the mitochondrial oxygen-consuming heme/copper enzyme, cytochrome c oxidase. This review describes the molecular mechanism of this interaction and the consequences for its likely physiological role. The oxygen reactive site in cytochrome oxidase contains both heme iron (a3) and copper (CuB) centers. NO inhibits cytochrome oxidase in both an oxygen-competitive (at heme a3) and oxygen-independent (at CuB) manner. Before inhibition of oxygen consumption, changes can be observed in enzyme and substrate (cytochrome c) redox state. Physiological consequences can be mediated either by direct "metabolic" effects on oxygen consumption or via indirect "signaling" effects via mitochondrial redox state changes and free radical production. The detailed kinetics suggest, but do not prove, that cytochrome oxidase can be a target for NO even under circumstances when guanylate cyclase, its primary high affinity target, is not fully activated. In vivo organ and whole body measures of NO synthase inhibition suggest a possible role for NO inhibition of cytochrome oxidase. However, a detailed mapping of NO and oxygen levels, combined with direct measures of cytochrome oxidase/NO binding, in physiology is still awaited. mitochondria; cytochrome oxidase  相似文献

The infro- and component community dynamics of digenetic trematodes in a freshwater gastropod community were examined over a 33-month period. The gastropod and trematode communities were composed of 17 and 10 species respectively. A total of 9,831 snails was collected; among them, 192 belonging to 14 species were infected by larval trematodes. The size of infected snails was significantly greater than that of healthy ones, and the increase of prevalence with size/age was interpreted as related to the increased probability of ultimately becoming parasitized. The trematode community was rich in allogenic species, but the most frequent trematode (cercariaeum) was autogenic and generalist (a range of 12 snail host species). There was a significantly positive relationship between the frequency of trematode species in the community and the number of first intermediate host species. A great temporal heterogeneity occurred in the prevalence of the snails, mainly attributed to the great temporal fluctuations of snail host populations and the variability of freshwater ecological conditions. The data on the occurrence of larval trematodes in 14 host species over the 33-month study allowed indicate a significant negative correlation between the abundance of gastropods and the prevalence of trematodes.  相似文献

1 Paropsis atomaria Olivier represents an emergent pest of Eucalyptus plantations in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. Most prior studies on the biology and control of P. atomaria have centred on populations from Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory, but the biological relationship between beetles from Canberra and those from up to 1500 km further north are unknown. 2 DNA markers were used to determine whether P. atomaria from Canberra are the same biological species as those from Eucalyptus forestry plantations in northern New South Wales and Queensland, where the beetle has become an important pest. Using the mitochondrial gene, cytochrome c oxidase I (COI), individuals collected from across the distribution of P. atomaria were investigated for haplotype diversity and levels of mitochondrial divergence. 3 Within P. atomaria, genetic distance averaged 0.5% across 23 unique haplotypes for 93 individuals, with an average of 14% difference between P. atomaria and the outgroup species, Paropsis obsoleta. Significant genetic structure was observed relative to geographical distribution, but not with respect to host plant species of origin. Greatest divergence was between the southern‐most sample site (Canberra) and northern sites in New South Wales and Queensland, indicating reduced gene flow between these regions. 4 Individuals from across eastern Australia belong to the same genetic species with population substructuring evident. Consequently, there is no evidence to suggest cryptic species complexes exist within the currently defined taxon. Continued implementation of control strategies for P. atomaria across its distribution is appropriate.
